‍ Called the Boating Capital of New England for the array of craft on its waters, Boothbay Harbor is a beacon for local and visiting yachtsmen who come to experience the fabled Down East cruising grounds and picturesque bay. Incorporated by the Maine Legislature in 1895, the club outgrew its original inner harbor location decades ago with its clubhouse, sailing center, tennis courts and docks now in West Boothbay Harbor. The signature fleet of locally designed 21-foot Boothbay Harbor One Designs launched in 1938 still sail. Portland Yacht Club

‍ Falmouth, ME

‍ Founded in 1869 after several Portland area yachtsmen cruised to Boothbay Harbor and back, the club is one of the oldest continually operated in America and has counted U.S. presidents as members, including George and Barbara Bush. A key attraction is its location on the shores of Casco Bay, where the 365-some calendar islands make for excellent cruising and natural marks for racing. The club started its first one-design fleet with a Starling Burgess sloop in 1903. The tradition continues with J/24s and Etchells. Boston Yacht Club

Marblehead, MA

‍ Located 17 miles north of Boston, this 1866-founded club counts famous naval architect Nathanael G. Herreshoff, then still a teenager, as one of its original members. The club operated in six different venues through the years, but all operations are now in Marblehead. The membership is keenly sailing oriented, so much so that the start line of many races was reconfigured to be spectator-friendly, having the fleet sail toward shore before heading seaward. Corinthian Yacht Club

‍ The who's who founders and members of this 1885-founded club on Marblehead Neck include past and present boat builders and sailmakers such as John Rhodes, John Alden, George O'day, Ted Hood and Robbie Doyle. Today, the club is a hot spot all summer long, from junior sailing programs to major regattas hosted almost weekly from June to August. The signature event is the century-plus-old Marblehead Race Week, where 200+ boats compete in classes such as International One Designs, J/70s, Rhodes 19s and Viper 640s. ‍ Located on Martha's Vineyard, what was once the main whaling wharf in Edgartown is now home to this club's facilities over the water. The first members in 1905 raced catboats, knockabouts and sloops followed by clambakes and ice cream socials. Nowadays, while dock space is limited, the town-run mooring field in the harbor is the best vantage point. The prevailing southwest breeze in the summer is extremely reliable, making for superb racing until winds lie back down in the evening. The club's major races, like its nearly century-old annual regatta, often maintain a crew board or listing of yachts looking for race crew. Ida Lewis Yacht Club

Newport, RI

‍ Namesake of the famous 19th century keeper of the Lime Rock Light in Newport Harbor, the 1928-incorporated club is now rooted on this rock. The club's burgee gives a nod to Lewis, with the 18 white stars circling the blue lighthouse representing the number of lives she saved. Today, a small light on top of the clubhouse remains with a few artifacts on display, although the bulk of Ida Lewis memorabilia is displayed at the Newport Historical Society Museum. Essex Yacht Club, on the Connecticut River, was founded in 1933 on the principles of friendship and a deep love of yachting. Then as now, our hope is to foster a community of enthusiastic individuals and families brought together through their enjoyment of the boating experience.

The mission of the Essex Yacht Club is to promote excellence in yachting activities among its members, including racing, cruising and off-water Club activities. To accomplish this mission, the Club has developed year-round member activities and programs to promote the Corinthian spirit, the fine traditions of yachting excellence, and the camaraderie of friendship.

Pattaconk Yacht Club ​

Pattaconk Yacht Club is predominantly a power boat owners’ club. Our Club provides an economical location for slipping a boat, with easy access to the mouth of the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound.  Boating safety and boating community are stressed.

Located on the west bank of the Connecticut River, the club offers 125 boat slips in two basins and along Chester Creek. Slips are accessed via Chester Creek and are protected from the traffic on the river and offer electric, water, cable and Wi-Fi. A new clubhouse, constructed in 2015, offers a meeting/dining room and full commercial kitchen on the second floor, a casual members lounge, showers and restrooms on the first floor. 

The first level of the clubhouse is open to the members year round. The upper floor of the clubhouse is available for rent by both the membership and the general public. Please see the Club Rental page for more details The grounds feature a private, sandy beach, grilling area and pavilion with picnic tables.  A fuel dock and pumpout station are located on the River in front of the Clubhouse.

Welcome to the Greenwich Boat & Yacht Club

) was organized in 1938, making it one of the oldest boat clubs in this Connecticut town. The club was founded to encourage the sports of Yachting, Sailing, Boating, Fishing and related activities, to support the art of seamanship and navigation, and to make facilities available for its members in the pursuit of such sport.  5 with club funds, our clubhouse overlooks Greenwich Harbor and the island archipelago of Captain Harbor with seating for over seventy on the patio and 150 in the clubhouse. Other amenities include a complete commercial kitchen, gas grills, and shower. Completed in 1970 with funds raised by the club, the marina berths 67 boats and yachts from 15 to 42 feet, and three moorings.  The club assumes all maintenance and renovation responsibilities for the property, clubhouse, and marina.

Founded in 1954,  t he Guilford Yacht Club, nestled among vast, virgin salt marshes on the bank of the West River in Guilford Connecticut, is Long Island Sound’s premiere yachting facility.   To appreciate it fully you must experience it all – spacious floating docks, luxurious swimming pool, showers, Har-Tru tennis courts and a superb club house complete with an exquisite banquet facility for catered events.  As far as the eye can see, one is surrounded by undisturbed natural beauty, including spectacular views of Long Island Sound and Faulkner’s Island. The Guilford Yacht Club is easily accessible from Long Island Sound and is a short distance from the town of Guilford, CT.

Golf Tournament 2024

Our annual BYC Invitational Golf Tournament raises funds to benefit Camp Rising Sun. This years event took place at Orange Hills Country Club on May 10th after the round players returned to BYC for all post golf activities.

Saint Patricks Day Dinner

The Saint Patrick's Day Dinner was held on Saturday, March 16th. Traditional corned beef and cabbage along with corned beef hash and Dave Dziura's Irish soda bread were served family style to 80 attendees. A great time was had by all!

Golf Tournament 2023

Our annual BYC Invitational Golf Tournament raises funds to benefit Camp Rising Sun. This years event took place at Alling Memorial Golf course on May 12th after the round players returned to BYC for all post golf activities.

Bridgeport in Connecticut is a historic seaport city positioned in the heart of the Long Island Sound.

The Long Island Sound is a wonderful location for those who enjoy boating and fishing activities. The Sound is an inland tidal estuary, covering an area of 1,320 square miles, and has a coastline that stretches more than 600 miles.

The boating conditions here make Bridgeport and the Long Island Sound a top-rated water-sport destination, so there are many boating clubs in the area. If you are new to boating in Bridgeport or considering joining a yacht club here, there are several clubs to choose from.

1. Black Rock Yacht Club

The Black Rock Yacht Club was started in 1926.

The club’s mission is “to preserve and enhance our Club’s reputation and prestige by encouraging and supporting yachting and yacht racing; to offer athletic programs that build community, sportsmanship and team skills among members of all ages; and to foster a collegial dining and social environment.”

The BRYC facilities include a clubhouse that offers delicious food in the dining room, a bar, and various decks for members and their guests to enjoy the views. Other facilities include tennis courts and a swimming pool, both of which have active programs for members.

BRYC boasts a dynamic racing and cruising community and includes powerboaters and other members just learning to sail.

Club members own a diverse collection of boats, from keelboats to racing dinghies, sailboats of all different types and sizes, recreational powerboats, and fishing boats.

However, the club has a fleet of boats that are actively used in sail training programs for the young and old:

• Ideal 18’s  – are small sailboats that can be used for recreational or racing purposes. They are designed for sailors of all ages, weight, skill levels, and competitive backgrounds.
• Club 420’s – also known as C420’s, are used as youth development sailing dinghies in many countries worldwide.
• RS Feva – is a 2-person sailing dinghy that is recognized as an international sailing class and is popular worldwide.
• Optimists  – are popular small, single-handed sailing dinghies. They are used to teach sailing to children up to the age of 15 years.
• Lasers  – are the most popular design of dinghy in the world. They are small one-design dinghies that can be sailed single-handed, although, in some classes, they are permitted to be sailed by 2.
• Black Rock Sailing Club has a very active sailing program for all ages.
• The club also offers tennis facilities, with clinics for adult members and youth programs.
• There is a four-lane 25-yard pool, where members can take a refreshing dip or relax and take in the sun on the decks. There are also swimming lessons available.
• The clubhouse is open to members for private parties on request.
• New membership is on a member referral basis only.
• The club is only open to members and their guests who must be signed in.
• The club is an old-fashioned yacht club with many rules that must be adhered to.

2.Carefree Boat Club at Bridgeport Harbor Marina

The Carefree Boat Club is a company that offers boating experiences in various locations across the USA and Canada.

The club claims to have “revolutionized the way people enjoy boating” by offering an alternative to owning your own boat. Members have unlimited access to a variety of different motorized boats in their fleet.

In addition, the Carefree Boat Club offers hassle-free boating. The club’s staff take care of everything for you, from cleaning the boats to all maintenance plus everything in between.

They even refuel the boats after every use. All you have to do is make an online booking, book via a phone call to the club, and then show up on the day and enjoy the water.

There are instructors at each location who provide boat safety training and handling skills.

The club aims to ensure all of the club members can follow the rules and safely enjoy their time on the water.

The Bridgeport fleet contains a range of boats which include the following:

• Robalo R242 (Twin Engine) – a center console fishing boat with 2 engines to get you where you want to go fast.
• Robalo R242EX – a versatile boat that can be used as a comfortable family explorer or for some serious fishing.

• All members are offered free boat safety and boat handling training.

• You only pay for your membership and the fuel you use when you take out a boat.
• Membership fees are expensive. However, if you are an avid boater, it may work out cheaper than owning your own boat.
• Boats are limited to fishing or recreational motorized boats only.
• Weekends and school holidays can get busy, so you will need to book in advance.

The Fayerweather Yacht Club (FYC) is a traditional sailing club first established by a group of sea-loving friends in June 1919.

Today the club is known in Bridgeport and the surrounding areas as a good example of what a yacht club should be; social, hospitable and actively involved in sailing, fishing, and other water activities.

The FYC offers a full calendar of sailing activities, including the Wednesday night sailing series, the Frostbiting or winter racing program, and a more general sailing program. In addition to the sailing calendar, there are fishing competitions, plus the club organizes a range of social events that are suitable for the whole family.

FYC’s facilities include a restaurant, a fully serviced bar, a spacious picnic area, and a full-service dock open to all sailors around Bridgeport.

The full-service dock offers docking and haul-out services, fuel (petrol only), water and electricity, and a pump-out station which members can use for free.

The FYC has two J22’s which members can use.

The 2 boats are equipped with a mainsail, a roller furling Jib, plus a Torqeedo electric engine, 2 batteries, VHF radio, and enough life jackets. The J22 was designed and first built in 1983 as a one-class sailboat which is fun to sail and is still very popular as a racing class today.

In addition to the two J22’s, the club members have a very diverse fleet of sailboats.

Members and non-members are encouraged to join the Wednesday night sailing series, where you can meet other members, improve your sailing skills and join in the fun.

• Club members can join many events, including sailing in both summer and winter and fishing competitions.
• There are plenty of opportunities for members to get actively involved socially and with the club.
• Both members and non-members are encouraged to join the Wednesday night sailing series of races.
• Free launch service is available for members to access their boats kept on moorings within the harbor.
• An informal galley offers lunch and dinner 5 days a week and brunch on Sundays (closed on Mondays).
• A full-service bar is open from 11 am 7 days a week.
• Membership applications require sponsorship from 2 current members of the club.
• You will need a CT safety certificate and an FYC certificate obtained from the club to sail the two club boats.
• FYC is a more ‘formal’ yacht club which is not for everyone.

At the time of writing, the application fee for FYC was $297.50.

After approval, the club joining fee and monthly fees will be determined by what type of membership you opt for.

The committee determines club fees in November of every year.

East End Yacht Club

The East End Yacht Club was established in 1912 “to further encourage boating in all its forms and promote social recreation and interaction between its members.”

It’s a smaller club that doesn’t offer its own fleet for members to use.

However, one positive is that the club is offering a Social Membership for $200 per year.

The club has a full social calendar, including pasta nights, karaoke, trivia nights, and live music.

Miamogue Yacht Club

The Miamogue Yacht Club offers a full-service bar with pool tables.

They also have a banquet hall and a gasoline dock which is open to members and non-members.

Final Thoughts

So, if you are thinking about joining a boat or yacht club in Bridgeport, there are different options to consider.

Here are some of the questions you need to ask yourself before deciding which boat club to join:

• What type of boating or yachting do you want to take part in?
• Are you solo, a couple, or are you looking for a family-friendly environment?
• Do you want access to sailing training, boat safety, or boat handling to improve your skills?
• How important is socializing with other members to you?
• Affordability – what is your budget?

Boating any kind takes up a lot of your time, so it’s important to find the right club.

Some clubs have open days to try and encourage new memberships, or you can even book a tour.

The Hartford Yacht Club was  incorporated on June 26, 1895. The original club location was on the East Hartford side of the Connecticut River in the area of the Founders and Buckley bridges. We are now located on Tryon Street at the Glastonbury/Portland border.

We are a "working club" where all of our members take part in supporting the club by joining work parties to maintain the docks, building and the grounds.  We also ask all members to join one of our committees that are in charge of operating various aspects of the club. Finally, we ask that our members attend and enjoy the amazing food, friends and fun at the club's regular social events including our famous clam slam event, spaghetti dinner, Halloween party, Christmas party, and Kentucky Derby party.

HYC AMENITIES

Club house & fire pit.

The club provides all members with access to a beautiful waterfront clubhouse and grounds on the banks of the Connecticut river.  The clubhouse has a full kitchen, bathrooms, large screen TV, WiFi, pool table, foosball and shuffleboard tables, as well as a lounge with TV and fireplace.  The club also provides outdoor deck and waterside seating where you will find picnic tables and a wonderful fire pit that serves as a regular gathering place on most warm summer nights.  The clubhouse is also available for private member parties for an additional fee.

For those that can trailer their boat, the club maintains an excellent paved launch ramp that can accommodate launching boats as large as 42 feet.  There are temporary docks available for tie up while loading and unloading as well as parking for cars and trailers.  

The club also has 26 freshwater slips with both power and water available.  The slips can accommodate boats as large as 36 feet with a 12 foot beam.  Slips are available to members on a first come, first serve basis and are typically in high demand by existing members.  On average, new members will typically get the option to rent a slip after 1-3 seasons of membership.  Slip costs and membership fees for the season can be found in the HYC Fees PDF Document  listed below.

Finding a place to spend the day the whole family enjoys is more complex than it sounds. You need somewhere with a range of activities to keep everyone interested. Easy access to food, bathrooms, changing areas, showers, and lounges are a plus too. Even better if there’s a thriving community to welcome you and show you the ropes. It also has to be close to your home.  Scenic Connecticut drives  might be enjoyable from time to time, but spending the extra time and gas would get old after a while.  

A family club, such as a country or yacht club, is everything you need for the whole family. The kids can go swimming while adults relax or get active. In fact, according to an  online golf course ranking and rating platform , it’s the number one best golf course in the whole state! The club was founded over 100 years ago, in 1914. A protege of Charles Blair Macdonald, dubbed the father of golf in America, designed the course. It opened in 1921 with a links-style layout. Today, the club offers beach and pool access, tennis courts, activity-related shops, a clubhouse, etc. 

2. The Patterson Club

The Patterson Club started as a small 20-member social and dining room in 1929. Almost one hundred years later, they've expanded into a club that's suited for the whole family. The club hosts family-friendly events and activities year-round with amenities that include a large clubhouse, 18-hole golf course, swimming facilities, tennis, and paddle courts. Members and guests can socialize at the clubhouse's dining room, grill, or multiple outdoor seating areas. 

3. Birchwood Country Club

The Birchwood Country Club is a peaceful oasis in the bustling city center of Westport . Enjoy Atlantic waters at the Pequot Yacht Club on Long Island Sound. The club boasts modern features in the historical setting of Southport. Founded to promote and sustain sailing in Fairfield, the club hosts sailors from all over the county for annual races in the spring and fall. Members cultivate a robust sailoring culture throughout the year. The clubhouse has a galley and dining area where you and your family can relax after returning from a day together on the water.

4. Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club 

At the mouth of the Saugatuck River, the Saugatuck Harbor Yacht Club is a beautiful location for getting out on the water. The club is home to about 200 families whose favorite activities include cruising, fishing, and racing on sailboats and powerboats alike. A pool, barbecue area, and clubhouse provide recreational spaces for members to mingle.

5. Cedar Point Yacht Club

Speaking of racing tradition, that’s what the Cedar Point Yacht Club is all about. The club hosts over 100 race days each year, honoring 130 years of racing. The sailing, cruising, and racing culture builds camaraderie among club members and provides a competitive outlet. But with many large yacht charters, surcharges — for fuel, food, drinks, marina fees, onshore activities and special requests — are usually an additional 35% of the base price. 

Cruising in Europe also attracts a value-added tax of around 20% of the base fee, but this can vary by country. Crew gratuities are also between 10% to 20% of the charter fee.

All in, a week cruising the French Riviera on Malia costs a whopping $1,441,500.

For the price, Malia takes guests on stunning tours of the Mediterranean, from Monaco to the Italian Riviera, island-hopping from Sardinia and the Maddalena islands with stops in iconic French hubs like Saint-Tropez.

Up to 12 guests can sleep in the yacht's eight state rooms, including a master VIP suite, all with luxury ensuite bathrooms.

"The bedrooms are comparable to hotel rooms. You don't feel like you're on a yacht," said Sacha Williams, global charter marketing director at Northrop & Johnson, Malia's broker. "It's like you're in a floating hotel."

The main deck has a saloon with a bar and dining area illuminated by full-length windows, as well as an upper deck lounge featuring a striking glass chandelier and an extensive audio-visual system.

The decks are connected by an elevator.  

Like a hotel, the yacht has a gym and spa, the latter with a massage room, sauna and Turkish hammam bath.

"On a yacht this size, it's increasingly popular to have a hammam, steam room or sauna," Williams said. "Wellness is definitely a strong trend on all yachts now. The onboard spa therapist does all manner of treatments, not just massage and facials, but all things beauty-related. You could spend an entire day in that space."

There's also a glass-edged infinity pool on the main deck and a glass-bottomed Jacuzzi on the sundeck, plus an outdoor theater.

Tenders and toys.

Travelers may pay seven figures for a week on this yacht, but few stay on it the whole time.

Malia comes with additional leisure vessels, including several tenders that guests can take to shore.

They can also take a deep-sea fishing trip on Malia's 46-foot-extreme sportfishing tender. Additionally, crew can take guests up to six feet underwater in a shark-shaped submersible made by Seabreacher, which seats one pilot and one passenger. 

"The fishing tender is quite unique, especially in the Mediterranean, as you tend to see these a lot more in the Caribbean and Bahamas, where sportfishing is no big deal. But imagine how cool that would be to just take the children out for the afternoon and go and catch some fish," said Williams. 

Crew members can also teach guests to use Fliteboard motorized surfboards and to explore underwater with Seabobs. Those who want to relax can sit back for towable joy rides in the sun.

Malia's "toy" inventory also includes jet and water skis, plus paddleboards, pedalboards , wakeboards, kayaks, and an inflatable climbing frame with a walkway.

"This particular owner is all about fun. He wanted to make sure that he had every possible guest request catered for" said Williams. "You don't see a Fliteboard on every yacht ... they are in high demand."

Captain and crew

A portion of the charter price goes to paying for the 21-member crew, which includes a captain, engineering and hospitality teams, and several chefs. Some crew members double as personal trainers and have musical skills to entertain in the evenings.

"Guests may never even see some of the crew members, like the engineering team," said Williams. "There are people working through the night to ensure the guests' safety. Some will be more involved with the navigation and planning, and arranging berths in ports. The more senior interior crew will also do the bookkeeping, as there's a lot of money being spent to ensure that everyone's having a great time."

"The best way I can describe them is like swans," said Williams. "They just glide around."

Malia's itineraries are "hyper detailed," Williams said. The yacht's broker and the captain agree on an itinerary that considers guest preferences, sea conditions and weather forecasts.

But the captain can also consider requests to modify the schedule mid-charter — for example, if guests are enjoying a particular location and want to stay longer, Williams said:

"That's the beauty of chartering a yacht."

Who books vacations like this

Malia's guests tend to be North American, European and Middle Eastern, Williams said. 

Typically, they have built their wealth in highly niche areas of business, she said. "I've always been surprised by some of the North American clients as to how they've generated this amount of wealth from selling items that can appear quite banal. But I guess the size of the country means that you can become very successful selling something as simple as eggs or screws," she said.

"Sometimes you'll see the principal — the person footing the bill — charter Malia for a few weeks, and invite different groups during that time. One week, they'll be with their friends, and then the friends will move on and then their family will join, then their parents."

But many guests book the yacht for family vacations and celebrations, she said.

"They may be celebrating a birthday or wedding anniversary, or just a family get-together. On a yacht the size of Malia, you can have the grandparents, the parents and the children."

Patient Pain Free and Swinging a Golf Club After Cervical Disc Replacements

Tysen Kendig admits the idea of spinal surgery was undoubtedly scary, but he knew going in that he had one of the very best surgeons in the business to fix his cervical stenosis leading to extreme confidence going into surgery but after the fact is even more impressed with the quality of care.

It was 2013, when Tysen Kendig was moving from Iowa to Connecticut for a job at the University of Connecticut that he first noticed he had a problem. He didn’t think much of it at the time, but thought he might have strained something while moving boxes into his office.  That evening he started to have a pain in his arm that radiated down his arm and into his chest.

Concerned it might have been a heart attack, he remembered driving past UConn Health while heading east on I-84. He drove himself to the Emergency Department where he was assured it was not a heart attack and was eventually introduced to Dr. Isaac Moss , chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UConn Health and co-director, Comprehensive Spine Center at the Brain and Spine Institute at UConn Health .

Over the next ten years his symptoms waxed and waned, but they remained manageable. Unfortunately, over a period of a week in April of 2023 he developed a constant numbness and tingling in the tip of his right index finger. It seemed odd, but not super concerning. However, as time passed, he started to develop a deep ache and pain inside the middle of his right arm around his elbow going up to his shoulder. Occasionally, his arm would get very cold, and he would get pins and needles in his hand that went from an intermittent nuisance to a constant problem.

He was initially evaluated by Dr. Cory Edgar , sports medicine specialist and associate professor of orthopedic surgery at UConn Health. Dr. Edgar determined that Tysen’s symptoms were more likely stemming from a neurologic issue as opposed to a problem in the muscles or joints.  Kendig then saw neurologist, Dr. Anthony Alessi , associate clinical professor of neurology and orthopedics, UConn Musculoskeletal Institute who completed a nerve test and concluded that the symptoms were likely stemming from nerve irritation in the cervical spine (neck).

It was then Kendig reunited with Dr. Moss who determined he had significant cervical stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal which can compress the spinal cord and nerves. When significant, this narrowing and nerve compression can affect a person’s ability to move, sense of touch, and more.

“Every step of the way, everything was a team approach with the doctors at UConn Health, they all worked together to find what the issue was and then treat it appropriately,” says Kendig, noting at one point that he had three physicians in the room at once evaluating his symptoms.

He started a stepped-up course of treatment that included physical therapy and X-ray guided epidural corticosteroid injections. The injections were helpful in relieving Kendig’s arm symptoms; however, the relief did not last, and his symptoms eventually returned. Normal activities such as driving and even sleeping became increasingly difficult as the positioning worsened the pain, numbness and tingling.

After a long course of non-operative treatment over the course of year, Kendig and Moss decided that proceeding to surgery was the was the best option.

“When coming to UConn Health you have access to the brightest minds, and that provided me with a sense of great calm. After the fact, I’m even more impressed with the quality of care.” – Tysen Kendig.

“The idea of spinal surgery was undoubtedly scary, but I knew going in that I had one of the very best surgeons in the business for this type of surgery, so I had extreme confidence,” says Kendig. “When coming to UConn Health you have access to the brightest minds, and that provided me with a sense of great calm. After the fact, I’m even more impressed with the quality of care.”

The surgery to perform cervical disc replacements is performed at the UConn Comprehensive Spine Center at the Brain and Spine Institute at UConn Health.  The expertise in advanced spine care treatment options means faster recovery, greater precision, and improved safety for the treatment.

A small incision was made in the front of the neck to expose the upper spine. Once the spine was safely accessed, the damaged disks and bone spurs were removed. The disks were replaced with artificial mechanical replacements and a spacer to increase the space for Kendig’s compressed nerves and spinal cord while maintaining motion of the neck.

“What amazed me was I came out of surgery, and I was walking around in four to five hours with no pain,” says Kendig. “I felt great, so much so that the nursing staff had to constantly remind me that I just had major surgery and had to be careful doing things like don’t bend down quickly and tie my shoes. But I was shocked that so quickly after surgery I was able to move around without pain. I remember thinking by the evening of surgery day ‘okay, this worked exactly as planned.'”

Since the surgery Kendig has not had pain or tingling in the arm.  Typically, with just two discs, the surgery can be done in outpatient surgery, but because he had three, he spent a night in the hospital.

The recovery from surgery was speedy with some expected pain at the incision site, irritation in speaking and mild difficulty swallowing the first few weeks, as is expected after this common procedure. Six months later, Kendig feels the clock has been turned back more than 10 years, with full functionality and motion in his neck and no residual pain or numbness at all – and a new appreciation for those who helped him get back to this point.

“Everyone I met at UConn Health from the volunteer at the front desk of the hospital, the transport staff, nurses and doctors were all amazing and incredibly responsive and upbeat,” says Kendig, who has even started swinging a golf club again and resuming a full array of physical activities he did before the surgery. “UConn Health Sports Medicine has always provided top-level care for my family, especially my athlete sons. But I was blown away and remember feeling like everyone went the extra mile to make me feel comfortable during my procedure, including sharing plenty of laughter. I feel great, and I couldn’t have hoped for a better inpatient experience anywhere.”
