I have a marauder, its a great boat. Its the 4th boat I have owned and so far its proved to be perfect. We won't need to upgrade for a long time even with kid nuber 3 on the way. They have so much room for their size and great performance.

The only thing I would change is an open transom

We've got a Whiting 29' It was a hull only build with custom fit out and is a vast improvement on the production hull & deck layout in terms of utilisation of space. Strong boat with good performance. Ours is the non cruising configuration with fractional rig and deeper keel. Have done a few thousand miles bluewater plus a few more coastal and haven't managed to break it. Want to buy it? We're upgrading and the boat is already sitting in Vanuatu ready to cruise paradise again.

I guess whiting 29 has a good seaworthy charateristics as his other designs. I.e. reactor 25.

Thanks booboo for the reply. I heard about Marauder's good layout. 7/8 rig is also quite attractive. How did you find it on a rough day with a big swell? How does it manage them?

What is bouyant movement characteristic to Marauder? Is it similar to the movement with alan wright's Varient Design. It was quite interesting experience when i was on Varient once. Quite fun sensation!

Does anyone know about Lidgard 29 design? I like Lidgards quality craftmanship. Are they mostly factory finish by Llidgard? I would like to dig in more if anyone can share link or something.

We looked at Whitings and Lidgards before eventually buying a Carpenter 29. I lfound the Whitings to have a bit more interior space than the Lidgards and looked at heaps of both designs but once we saw a Carpenter we were sold. your welcome to have a look over mine if you want.

Atom Ant

Hi Hey Elmo, the real answer is that you can't go wrong with any of those boats. If you are considering a boat that size then also consider the Davidson 28. Roomy and safe and sails well. Yes Carpenter 29s are good but also dearer than the others.

If you are after a Whiting 29 then I know a Weiti club member has one for sale. Let me know if you want to contact them.

All good boats, but my choice would be the Lidgard 29 stiff quick and great 2 handed.

The Carpenter 29 has more volume and is all of the above but yes the prices do tend to be a bit higher. You might get more bang for your buck with the Lidgard.

End of the day we all have our own criteria so try and get a sail on each and buy the one that feels right to you.

Young Entertainer 59

I owned a lidgard for the last couple of year and it was a great cruising boat, much lighter then that others at only 2000kg this helps with the overall performance (will plane down wind in a good blow) but does mean they are not so good upwind into large waves, with an 18hp will still motor at 7kn into a 30kn headwind (mine did this all the way to BOI on year). If you want to know more about the Lidgard or the Whiting PM me and I can give you more details, My choice would be the Lidgard over a Whiting for the performance and open transom

Hmmm, I wouldn't describe the Lidgard as a stiff boat at all, more so the most tender of all these boats being discussed. I've sailed on all of these boats, and you won't go wrong with any of them. It's going to come down to your budget and personal preferences. The Marauder has loads of room for a boat of it's length, the Whiting 29 possibly a fraction smaller internally but not much in it. The D28 also has plenty of room, similar to the Carpenter 29. The Lidgard is the smallest internally.

Lidgard definately smalled inside then the others, on paper would be the stiffest as one if its big claims during the marketing was the 50% ballast ratio with 1000kg in keel and 1000kg in the rest of the boat, but in reality seemed more "lively" then the others

I purchased a Marauder about 15 months ago, Im impressed with its performance and room, below and in the cockpit, they are easy to sail singlehanded and perform well in all conditions. We did the PYBC 2 handed the other weekend and were surfing at 10knts in 1 metre plus seas, in about 20-25knots with full main and no 2 kite, we narrowly missed beating a Lidgard29 home on Sunday, we full main and genoa , tehy we carrying full main and rolled up genoa to a no2, we were beside them most of the way from KAwau to the Barbers pole, nothing in it boat wise. However as BooBoo says an open transom would be nice however I have a large boarding platform which is great.

post-2807-141887198953.jpg

Question - do any of them have a decent double scratcher , that doesn't involve dropping the table and rebuilding it every night??? Just curious.

post-2807-141887198956.jpg

I have seen a marauder with a walk though - similar to a 1020. Not an open transom perse but definitely a walk through without having to "get your leg over" so to speak. I think it may have been the last one built and to the best of my knowledge it lives up at Gulf Harbour. The current owner had a Marauder already and when this one came up for sale he bought it and then sold his - simply for the walk thru. It has a nice cockpit floor rudder aka Y88 style. Can't remember its name but it has turned a great boat into an awesome boat.

sow1ld

Hi there when I was looking at 30footers I liked the Farr 9.2 Most of them are grp have 18hp yanmar saildrives in them. They dont have a open transom but they do have a seperate head & double bed up the front which the girl wanted. Theres a few in Wellie so they must be able to take a bit of a hiding & they where well priced. Whatever you do dont take the missus for a "quick" look at a 36footer on the way home or you too will end up on a first name basis with your bank manager....like me!

with an 18hp will still motor at 7kn into a 30kn headwind (mine did this all the way to BOI on year).

50% ballast ratio would give it good righting moment, but stiffness would come from the hull shape. More specifically, the beam and the turn of the bilge, a sharp turn of the bilge will give comparatively more initial stiffness than the same beam with perfect halfcircle sections (which would roll like a drunk hippo).

I've always intuitively thought of it as the chine being the fulcrum against which the rig forces and the ballast forces act.

I do like townson32 but the extra maintenace work for the wooden boat puts me off. Thinking about maintaining wooden boat, what and how much effort do I need in comparison to grp boats?

Repairing rot vs repairing pox? How hard is it to strip the rot and put a new wood back?? And cost? Is it easy to get a treated Kauri?

Wooden boat is quite attractive and the warmth it projects that i cant resist. My heart say yes but my head says NO!!

Chico 30 looks good.

Any more info about Shoalcraft? It looks pretty interesting!

Shoalcraft trace their roots to mulleties hence the shallow draft which is well worth considering for cruising the Gulf. Well built wooden boats from the 70's are very good value and if in good nick need only small regular maintenance, get a survey! Glass is definitely lower maintenance though

shoalcraft are balsa core and getting on a bit now and when that stuff needs attention it gets very high maintenance

From memory the Chico 30s are all wooden deck/cabin on glass hulls - so you get a bit of both

Final Approach 60ft Cr uis e r/Racer

Custom-built to be both racer and bluewater cruiser, Final Approach is "a rocket, but a comfy one".

Suitable for live-aboard, but she rewards attention to trim. The cold-molded hull retains its value so with a bit of love, she'll give access to performance for decades.

Auction ended; reserve not met. Offers welcome.

THE LIDGARD LEGEND

" Proudest project "

of legendary boat designer,  John Lidgard  of New Zealand

Why 'Lidgard Legend'?

Three reasons Final Approach deserves her nickname

Legendary Build Quality

This beautiful boat was designed by John Lidgard using the rare & highly desirable hybrid construction type using the exceptional Kauri cold-molding construction protocol: 1&1/2" with double reinforcing 45 degree cross lamination of 1/4" layers for a total thickness of 1.5+ inches then glassed over on the outside. This rare wood, not subject to dry rot & fully epoxy saturated & encapsulated in this construction type. "A rocket, but a comfy one", remarked Robert H. Perry.

Legendary History

ww-trophy.jpg

Built by John Lidgard of the legendary New Zealand Lidgards, Final Approach is of auspicious beginnings. Designed custom for World Champion Sailor, DJ Johnson, she was so well-known after his time sailing her in races around Hawaii that the 3-day race which still takes place in DJ's honour has as its trophy, a beautiful half model of Final Approach herself!

"I had no idea quite what a racing pedigree sits behind the Lidgard name, I mainly associated them with cruising."

Legendary One-off Value

Comfortable for cruising and fast enough to race, but so sturdy that she has plenty of life for another generation of sailors, Final Approach is a unique boat providing a unique offer for a new Captain and their family. We wish we could keep her longer, but we're having to give her up with haste. So if you're interested, you're in for a great deal!

Last valued at $400,000...

Most recently listed for $179,000...

Auction currently at $20,000 and runs to November 19th...

lidgard 29 yacht

Final Approach was going to be our family's forever-boat , originally bought in the brothers' names so it would live on to make memories for our next generation. Sadly, after returning to Europe for medical treatment, her newest captain won't be returning to her, so we're having to wave goodbye .

FAMILY OWNED & LOVED

A generation of wonderful memories, handed over gratefully

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

lidgard 29 yacht

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

  1. Lidgard 29

In NZ they had some stiff competition around the same time, the Whiting 29, Carpenter 29 and Farr 9.2 were all generally in the same vein and all had a number of boats built. Then the Young 88 and Noelex 30 were the next step up in performance. A mix of factory finished vs owner fit out, and a few with ply/glassed cabins and decks.
