Anchor Day Camp offers a diverse range of programs to cater to your child's interests and passions. Among these programs, sailing holds a significant place, and we take pride in our curriculum that instills comprehensive learning in this field.

Our one-week Sail & Steam mini-camp program is designed to provide a more immersive experience that delves deeper into the fundamentals of sailing. This program is tailored to cater to sailors of all proficiency levels, including those who are aspiring, intermediate, or advanced, making it an ideal choice for anyone who wants to develop their skills and passion for sailing.

Our Steam summer program is designed to promote creativity and mental stimulation among children. We achieve this through various fun Steam activities like building fundamentals, coding, imagineering, flight patterns, weight displacement on water, and more. We also incorporate a bit of mad science to engage their creative minds and help them learn and make new friends in their summer home!

Day Trips, Special Events and Theme Days

Something for everyone.

We have added some exciting new activities to our traditional camp program. On top of the regular camp fun, we will be taking day trips to places like Top Golf, bowling alleys, local beaches, and movie theaters. These trips will be paired with special event and theme days such as College Day Olympics, Luau, Halloween, Dancing with the Stars, and Disney Theme Days. These events will surely add energy and color to our summer camp, creating an experience full of fun and excitement!

New! Little Skippers Progam

This program is designed for campers 4 years old and campers entering Kindergarten in the Fall. It offers age-appropriate activities on site, such as swimming, arts and crafts, Imagineering, sports, and play.

Our programs provide comprehensive guidance to help children aged 5-15 master sailing, tennis, and swimming fundamentals. We have top-notch instructors who are dedicated to the task, and they offer their expertise to both beginners and those with prior experience. Our program is designed to enhance the skills of children and build their confidence in each activity. Looking to join a competitive swim team?

Our team meets twice a week for practice sessions and participates in exciting meets throughout the summer season. For a membership fee of $225, you'll receive comprehensive training, access to all meets, a stylish tee shirt, and a swim cap.

Additionally, we offer swim lessons for those who want to improve their skills. For just $35, you can receive 30 minutes of personalized instruction from our experienced coaches.

Sailing and Paddleboarding

Our personalized sailing and paddleboarding lessons are tailored to cater to the specific interests and abilities of each student, providing a safe and enjoyable learning experience.

Our certified instructors will work with you to create a customized plan that addresses your unique needs and goals, allowing you to improve your skills and gain confidence on the water. With our expert guidance, you can learn at your own pace and progress to the level of proficiency that you desire.

Sailing lessons are available at a rate of $135 per hour, providing exceptional value for a top-quality educational experience.

Tennis 

Our tennis facility offers a range of options for players of all ages and skill levels. The official-sized tennis courts are perfect for team play, individual practice, and private lessons. In addition, we offer youth programs designed to help kids develop their skills and foster a love of the game.

Our experienced instructors are available for private lessons ($55 per hour), which are an excellent way to improve your technique and take your game to the next level. Don't miss out on the opportunity to enjoy a fun and challenging sport at our top-notch tennis facility.

Junior Sailing

Welcome to the Manhasset Bay Junior Yacht Club Summer Program. From June 24 to August 16, 2024, the junior sailing program is available for children aged 9-17. It will take place Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm. Juniors can choose between our Sailing Only Program or the Sports Program. The junior sailing 'sailing only' program is an engaging and informative opportunity tailored for children interested in mastering the art of sailing. This program provides a secure and encouraging setting for juniors to enhance their sailing abilities and knowledge. Participants will be taught the fundamentals of sailing, including boat handling, racing strategies, and safety protocols. By combining practical experience and instruction, juniors will establish a strong sailing foundation that can be applied to competitive racing or leisurely sailing. Alongside skill development, the program also emphasizes values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and a passion for the water. Overall, the junior sailing sports program presents an exceptional chance for young sailors to build self-assurance, foster lifelong friendships, and enjoy themselves on the water. The junior sailing 'sports' program is a well-structured and dynamic initiative aimed at introducing children to various sports activities in a fun and supportive environment. This program generally focuses on promoting physical fitness, skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The program offers a range of sports, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, swimming, lacrosse, fitness & dance, or tennis, allowing children to explore and discover their interests and talents. Under the guidance of experienced and qualified coaches, these programs strive to foster the love for sports and create a solid foundation for juniors to advance their skills and potentially pursue competitive sports in the future.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

Established in 1894, Huguenot Yacht Club is one of the founding clubs of the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound.  Our mission is to introduce children to the sport of sailing, a skill and a way of life that can be enjoyed by all ages. ,

Our program accepts children between 8 and 16 years old.  Please browse the Registration section of our website and  contact us  if you have any questions.

Winter Seminars

Winter 2023-2024, Huguenot YC Jr Sailing will continue its series of  Advanced Sailing and Seamanship Seminars throuout the season – either Thursday Evenings or on Saturdays - depending on the topic and instructor. Typically one day a month from December through April.

Spring Sailing 2024

Huguenot will offer six days of Spring Sailing with with instruction every Saturday from May 4 through June  15, excluding May 25 Memorial Day Weekend.  June 22 is reserved as a make-up day if needed. Aldult participation is welcome.

Turnkey Winter Storage

Huguenot Yacht Club Junior Sailing is proud to offer winter storage for JS Optis or Lasers. Available for both members and non-members. 

Fall Sailing 2024

Huguenot will offer six days of Fall Sailing with instruction every Saturday from September 7 through October 12.  October 19 and 26 are reserved as a make-up day if needed.  Aldult participation is welcome.

Scout Merit Badge

Huguenot is pleased to offer the opportunity to guide scouts through the BSA Small-Boat Sailing Merit Badge program.

We believe our instructors are some of the best:  all are US Sailing Association Level 1 or Level 2 Certified.  All have gone through a similar sailing program like the one at Huguenot Yacht Club and know what it's like to be a junior sailor.  As instructors and coaches, they chose to stick around to pass on their love of sailing as a skill and a sport and share what and how they learned in the process.  They know that learning to sail is a great way to become self-reliant, make friends, and form life-long memories – that's what they will offer you. Summer Program

Founded by City Island Yacht Club in 2017, this award-winning summer program teaches children how to sail through safe, supervised instruction both on land and water.

Certified by US Sailing, the program is affiliated with the Scouting BSA/Bronx Council and offers Scouts the opportunity to earn the Sailing Merit Badge. All participants also receive a US Sailing Certificate of Accomplishment upon successful program completion.

Depending on proficiency at the end of the camper’s session, students learn respect for the water, basic sailing concepts, and an understanding of their own capacity as a young sailor.

Two Options for Sailing Lessons

Adventure sailing camp.

Have fun learning to sail! With instructors, students take boats around City Island and other locations including Long Island Sound. No pressure, just fun.

Race Team Camp

Learn more advanced sailing techniques and racing rules. Compete in regattas at other clubs. Perfect for students who want to race, Intermediate Opti and up.

Sailing focuses on steam skills.

When students are not on the water, they engage in an enriching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum which features weather, tides/currents, marine biology and ecology, and the physics of sailing.

Junior Sailing Summer Day Camp

• U.S. Sailing-certified Instructors with First Aid/CPR training
• Open to children ages 8-16 of all levels, beginner to advanced; instruction is given according to child’s skill level
• Lessons include: boat handling skills, safety, weather and water conditions
• Participants learn to sail Optis, C420 and Laser boats
• Swimming proficiency and PFD/life jacket required.

It is never too early to think about where your child might enjoy spending their summer. Whether it’s at a camp learning to ride horses, practicing their sailing or mastering their soccer skills, we’ve cultivated a list of varying summer camps that might just fit what your kid wants to experience during the warmer season.

Farm Hands (at Hallockville)

• Daily activities include animal and garden care, harvest, cooking and now vs. before on the farm.
• The program is for ages three and four for a minimum of one week and a maximum of seven weeks.
• COVID-19 precautions are taken and masks are required indoors.

Hallockville

• Daily activities include circle-time interactions with farm animals, including cows, sheep and chickens, feeding the animals and themed time projects and activities. 
• Six-week summer program for juniors ages five through seven and seniors ages eight through 12.
• COVID-19 policies are implemented and masks are required indoors.

Camp Wonder

• Daily activities include exploring the gardens at PCS East, investigating pond life, climbing trees and wandering the outdoors. 
• A six-week summer program for ages three through six.

Peconic Dunes Camp

• Daily activities range from a variety of sports, to learning circles, to boating and swimming, to hosting a carnival, to hands-on environmental tasks and more.
• Running as both a day camp and sleepaway camp, it’s offered for about three months (June through August) for kids ages eight through 15.

The Child’s Garden

• Activities include interactive and edible science, arts and crafts, wood working, yoga and more.
• The camp runs for around three months (late June to early September) for ages three through nine (children must be toilet trained).

Peconic Ballet Theatre Camps

Summer Ballet: “Encanto”

• Daily classes and rehearsals for eight days that lead to a live performance of “Encanto.” 
• Runs from July 6 to July 15 for ages four through 12 (and up). 

Musical Theatre Camps

• Runs from July 25 to July 29.
• Students take classes in jazz, tap, acting and voice, with an end-of-the-week small, in-studio performance.
• Runs August 1 to August 5.
• Students take classes in jazz, tap, acting and voice with an end-of-the-week small, in-studio performance.
• Runs from August 15 to August 19.
• Students will take classes in jazz, tap, and repertoire from Broadway Shows as well as voice lessons.

Disney Dance Discovery

• Runs from July 18 through July 22 and is designed for the programs’ youngest students.
• Students will take classes in ballet, tap and creative movement, while singing and dancing to their Disney favorites.

Dance Intensives

• For pre-apprentice students it runs from July 18 through July 29, for apprentice students it runs August 1 to August 12 and for the young dancers program it runs from August 10 through August 19. 
• Activities include morning ballet, repertoire classes in the afternoon, and a small, in-studio performance.

North Fork United Soccer Club

Offered in Laurel & Peconic

• The fun and challenging activities offered will help improve your child’s ball mastery, technical ability and fundamental soccer skills.
• For boys and girls ages four to 15 the program is offered in three weeks of development either July 18 to July 22, August 15 to August 19 or August 22 to August 26.

Pony Camp at Hedgewood Farm

• Activities include basic horsemanship and equine caretaking such as bathing, tacking and feeding, as well as practice riding skills while mounting atop one of the safe, experienced school horses.

Pony Camp at Hidden Lake Farms

• Activities include grooming and handling, horse care, horse related crafts and games, painting ponies, horse/pony costume parties and more. Campers will also receive a daily private pony ride. 
• Begins June 4 through the end of August and classes might be limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.
• Ages 5 and up.

Junior Sailing Program

• There are seven programs based on the sailor’s age, but ages five through 18 are accommodated. There are a variety of on-shore and on-boat activities that vary depending on your program.
• Twelve hours a week for eight weeks during July and August.

Mattituck Yacht Club

• For both new and returning sailors ages 5 to 18 there are both morning and afternoon programs available. (Note: There are a limited number of spots open.). 
• You can sign up for three different programs. The first is the “Full Season Pass,” where your child sails five days a week from June 27 to August 19. The second is the two or three-week programs starting June 27, July 11 and August 1. The third is the “Introduction to Sailing” program, which is for children turning five or six by Dec. 31, 2022 and offers two, three, four or eight weeks of classes starting on June 27, July 11 or August 1.

Participants in our programs have gone on to lead high school and college sailing teams and become certified U.S. Sailing instructors, while others are leaving their mark in club racing all over Long Island Sound.

Young sailors start with the basics of safety and fun in Optimists before advancing into the racing and more advanced program. Our 420 dinghy program prepares young teens for high school and college sailing.

Beginner and novice sailors age 6 – 10 learn and practice basic seamanship including rigging, capsize-recovery, basic boat-handling, sail-trim and points of sail while building confidence to skipper an 8-foot Optimist alone.  As students advance through the program, they will build self-reliance and are introduced to racing and intermediate sailing. Sailors are grouped by skill level.  All students must be able to pass a swim test.

420 Dinghy Program

As one of the most widely used dinghies in the world, our 420 program prepares students for higher level racing. Intermediate and advanced sailors build upon the foundation skills learned in the Optimist Program or from prior experience.  For novice, intermediate and advanced sailors, practices are skill-based and dynamic, providing the perfect opportunity to build racing skills and sailing confidence.  Sailors are grouped by skill level.  All students must be able to pass a swim test.

Adult & Family Private Sailing Lessons

This program is open to Adults 16 years of age and older, or families with children from 6 to 17 years of age.  Open to all skill levels, from novice, to seasoned sailors seeking to advance their skills. This program uses group instruction on our J/29 or our American 16 Day Sailer where each session is customized to the needs of the participants. Maximum 4 Participants to 1 Instructor.

SAIL CAMP PROGRAM OVERVIEW Beginner Level / Intermediate Level and Advanced Level - 8-16 years Racers - 9-18 years NERYC's summer ' Learn To Sail' camp and Bay Racer program for kids follows universally accepted methods of teaching sailing and operates within the guidelines prescribed by us sailing . Our training fleet consists of Optimists, Lasers, Topaz Unos, Flying Juniors and Club 420 dinghies. Learning, safety and fun are the cornerstones of our curriculum and our young sailors are taught using a combination of lectures, visual aids, practical drills and extensive on the water practice at our facility, which is a convenient commute for residents of Northern Maryland and surrounding the tri-state areas .

Beginners learn the basics, intermediate sailors build their competence in boat handling and sail trim and are introduced to the fundamentals of racing.  Advanced sailors perfect their skills and build their competence by working on advanced boat handling and sail trim, as well as developing their knowledge of the rules and tactics of racing. At this level sailors become eligible to join our travel team and compete in regional sailing regattas. Our young sailors have a such a great time at camp that many spend their entire summer with us and return year after year ( see reviews ). Sessions fill quickly so early registration is essential.

• To promote the sport and teach children how to sail to the best of their ability and interest
• To make sailing accessible to children
• To provide a safe environment for fun and learning
• To develop life-long values and skills such as sportsmanship, consideration for others, teamwork, self-worth, humility, self confidence, organization, health and fitness and an appreciation for nature and the environment
• To build skills: seamanship, sailing and racing skills
• To develop their skills and competence through both individual and team participation
• To provide opportunities to develop competitive sailing skills in regattas and in races

Lady Lara’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 14 guests overnight in 7 cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 19 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Lady Lara Mega Super Yacht, is a motor yacht built in 2015 by Lürssen in Schacht-Audorf. She is owned by Israeli/Kazakh billionaire Alexander Mashkevitch. With an overall length of 91.00 m (298.56 ft) and a beam of 14.82 m (48.6 ft).

Built under codename Orchid, Lady Lara has a full displacement hull, aluminium superstructure and a 14.35 metre beam. Exterior and interior design comes from the boards of Reymond Langton Design, a decision influenced by the desire to create a harmonious balance between spaces inside and out.

Zero speed stabilizers, elevator, beach club, helicopter landing pad on the bow, spa, swimming platform, tender garage with tender, air conditioning, on deck jacuzzi, gym, BBQ, underwater lights.

Sweeping, sculpted curves give Lady Lara a feminine elegance and the interior reportedly flows just as sinuously. Lady Lara is a private yacht and following her maiden voyage to Norway, she headed to Florida, the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean islands for the winter season.

Lady Lara features a displacement steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register classification society rules.

This luxury yacht is also fitted with ‘zero speed stabilizers’ which work at anchor, increasing on-board comfort when the yacht is stationary, particularly in rough waters.

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

In 2010 he was on the Forbes list of billionaires at #287. In 2017, he was on the list at #1098, with a worth of $1.9 billions. Now his worth is 3 billion dollars.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

There is a pool, a well-equipped gym, and plenty of areas for socializing and al fresco dining opportunities.

There is an abundance of options for sunbathing on the YALLA. The garage has a limousine tender and many water toys that offer fun and action while aboard the yacht.

The interior of the YALLA yacht was a finalist for The ShowBoats Design Awards 2015 for Interior Design in a Motor Yacht over 500GT.

The exterior of the YALLA yacht was a finalist for the Naval Architecture Award on a Displacement Motor Yacht and the Exterior Design & Styling Award on a Motor Yacht over 500GT at The ShowBoats Design Awards 2015.

The external profile of this vessel has been designed by Omega Architects, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department which developed the naval project, while their interiors have been created by Droulers Architecture, which has worked in close collaboration with the shipyard’s Interiors and Design Office.

The new megayacht, the first to be built by CRN on the new naval platform of 12.50 metres in width, is characterized by sleek, slender and sporty lines, which make the profile particularly streamlined. With 5 decks, M/Y CRN 132 73 m can host up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including the Owner Suite and Vip cabins, together with a crew of 22 members.

The construction of this new jewel of the sea, which includes the best design solutions realized by CRN, has required around 430,000 hours of work from the shipyard workers and subcontractors and the daily contribution of over 150 direct and indirect workers.

Off the Hook Yachts Acquires 300-Slip Marina in Georgetown Maryland  

The Acquisition 

Off the Hook Yachts is proud to announce the acquisition of Georgetown Yacht Basin (GYB) now rebranding under Georgetown Yacht Haven – a 300-boat slip full-service marina located on the Sassafras River in Georgetown, MD.  Off the Hook plans to restore the yacht basin to its former glory and reconnect with the local community in order to establish it as a household name in the area. 

As our founder is originally from Maryland, this will complement our current presence in the area, along with our MD sales team, which currently operates out of Bay Bridge Marina. The acquisition of the marina will allow us to expand on sales, service, and custom-built Nor-Tech Performance Boat sales in the region. Georgetown Yacht Haven has 300 slips, two paint sheds that can hold up to a 110-foot yacht, a 110-ton travel lift, a fuel dock, a swimming pool, bathhouses, and a complete ship store, along with many other amenities. GYH controls the largest travel lift in Northern Chesapeake Bay.

An advanced stabilisation system on board reduces the side-to-side roll of the yacht and promises guests exceptional comfort levels at anchor or when underway.

Cocoa Bean knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with a selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. 73m superyacht Yalla launched by CRN

Italian yacht builder CRN has launched its 73m superyacht Yalla .

CRN welcomed more than 1,000 guests to the launching ceremony of CRN 132 Yalla , held late this morning at its shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The launch ceremony included speeches from Alberto Galassi, new CEO of the Ferretti Group , Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN, Xinyu Xu, Vice-chairman of Weichai Group, and the Mayor of Ancona Valeria Mancinelli.

Part of the Ferretti Group,  CRN  specialises in custom yachts up to 90 metres in steel and aluminium. Yalla is the first yacht built by CRN on its new 12.5m beam platform. More than 430,000 hours from CRN and its subcontractors were spent on Yalla 's build, with contributions from 150 employees.

Exterior styling comes from Omega Architects in The Netherlands, in close collaboration with the CRN Engineering Department. The five-deck motor yacht features sleek, sporty lines and a streamlined profile. Superyacht Yalla 's interiors are by Droulers Architecture, working with CRN's Interiors and Design Office. She hosts up to 12 guests in its six cabins, including an owner's suite and VIP cabins, along with 22 crew members.

'Following the launch of CRN 133 61m superyacht a few months ago, we are proud to celebrate the launch of the new Yalla of 73m, which represents a challenge and an objective for the whole CRN shipyard,' says Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of CRN. ' Yalla will mark another important result for the development of CRN in the world. A sincere thanks for the trust of the owner and for the work of all employees and subcontractors who have worked on the project, to the architects Franck Laupman of Omega Architects and to Droulers Architecture. I also thank our shareholder Weichai Group and the new CEO of the Group Alberto Galassi for their participation in this important event for CRN and for the whole Ferretti Group.'

The Ferretti Group currently has five superyachts underway at the Ancona shipyard, including the 74m CRN 131, 55m CRN 134, a Ferretti Custom Line CL 124, the 61m CRN 133 and the Riva 122 Mythos , which are at the delivery stage.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

California Yacht Club is located at: 4469 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292 .

• If driving, please park in the CYC visitor’s lot adjacent to Admiralty Way and accessed from the driveway which is between Café del Rey and the Warehouse Restaurant.
• Once parked, proceed by foot and enter the member’s parking lot by passing by the main entry gate.
• After passing the main entry gate, continue walking, bearing hard left along the chain link fence at the north end of the large parking lot until it ends at a dark green shade cloth covered rowing shed.
• We meet, at the rowing sheds which are opposite the tall bamboo plants separating the Warehouse Restaurant and CYC.

Participants should bring: athletic shoes (running shoes), socks, shorts, shirts, sunscreen, water, a change of clothes,

towel and personal items (hats, sunglasses, orthotics, inhalers, etc).

To keep all the gear organized, a small duffel bag or back pack is recommended.

Clothes should fit reasonably tightly so while rowing, hands won’t get caught in shirts and shorts won’t get caught in the sliding seats.

Dressing in layers and using wicking type fabrics is recommended.

Peter Duncan and Relative Obscurity Return to the Podium as J/70 World Champion at California Yacht Club

Peter Duncan’s Relative Obscurity has prevailed over 60 other teams and challenging wind conditions to capture the 2021 J/70 World Championship title at California Yacht Club, today. In a five-day series that tested the skill and patience of top-notch competitors from 11 nations, Duncan – sailing with Willem van Waay, Morgan Trubovich and Victor Diaz de Leon – secured a top five position in the beginning of the regatta and never let go.

“I’m elated!” said Duncan as he returned to the dock, bustling with activity. “That was a tough day out there. We didn’t start very well but had a bit of a break with a header on the first run of the second race that let us get close to everybody and sail through some folks we need to sail through,” he explained. “We have a lot of fun onboard – joke and laugh and keep it light – and that worked in our favor when we had to grind through. Everybody knows what their job is, and these guys do them exceptionally well.”

The J/70 is 22.75 feet with an 11 foot long cockpit and deck-stepped carbon mast for easy rigging and stepping.

The crew shall consist of 3 or more persons. The number of crew shall not be changed during an event.

The J/70 Class has been created as a strict one-design Class where the true test when racing is between crews and not boats and equipment.

Well, chances are it will not be like Day 1 of the Pre-Worlds. Maybe more like Day 2. But then again, this is MdR—anything can happen.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

‘Nothing left’: After California Yacht Club fire, residents mourn loss of a beloved spot

In an instant, an overnight seaside blaze engulfed decades’ worth of boating trophies, historical artifacts and cherished memorabilia at the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey on Monday.

Fire crews attempted to control the blaze as heavy smoke and flames consumed the two-story building. By the time they had subdued the fire two hours later, only the skeletal remnants of the clubhouse were left standing.

John Myers, senior vice president of the club, said the blaze had been reported by an employee working late in the clubhouse Monday night. The fire spared the remainder of the facilities on the ground, including the docks and the yachts moored there. But the clubhouse, and particularly its second floor, was all but wiped out.

“We are working closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in their investigation of the cause of the incident and will share those findings when they become available to us,” Myers said.

Members are left mourning, comparing the loss to the death of a loved one.

Jennifer Dakoske Koslu awoke in Rancho Mirage at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, before the sun had risen, to find her phone inundated with text messages from club members.

The first message she read simply stated, “The CYC is gone.”

“As soon as I opened my phone, it went to a link on the Citizen app and saw a video of the club burning. I was shocked,” Dakoske Koslu said.

For the last 24 years, Dakoske Koslu and her family have been dedicated members of the CYC, whose clubhouse is a few miles away from their home in Playa del Rey. She said it is where her children have grown up, familiarizing themselves with every inch.

“I remember taking my son there on the Fourth of July when he was just 3 weeks old. It was the first place we went with him as a newborn,” Dakoske Koslu said.

She and her husband biked to the club in the aftermath of the fire, greeted by the charred remains of the building on Wednesday afternoon.

“The destruction is unbelievable. It’s clear that the fire was burning intensely on the second floor,” Dakoske Koslu said. “There’s nothing left.”

The second floor once housed a collection of the club’s prestigious racing trophies, kept on display for members and visitors. The fire melted all but a single salvageable California Cup. Most notably, the priceless King of Spain Trophy, acquired in 1929 from King Alfonso XIII, was lost.

Additionally, the club lost cherished photographs of every past commodore, a significant position within a yacht club. Members said they didn’t know if anyone had digitized the images of the commodores or of the club’s founders.

“We would tell yachting stories at the bar around lots of memorabilia, and the yachting artifacts behind the bar are all gone now,” Tom Materna said. “The yacht club provided us a facility for the off-the-water celebrations after hard-fought competition on the water.”

The CYC dates to the early 1920s, started by boat owners from the Los Angeles Athletic Club and other yacht clubs. The Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the first clubhouse in 1922, designed by famed architect Edwin Bergstrom, co-designer of the Pentagon.

In 1965, the yacht club submitted a proposal for an all-encompassing $1-million, two-story, 10,000-square-foot clubhouse on four acres off Admiralty Way. Members envisioned a state-of-the-art facility with 170 boat slips, a guest dock, a small boat hoist and a dry land storage facility for boats. The clubhouse that resulted was dedicated on June 10, 1967.

Then-Commodore William A. DeGroot Jr. told The Times that the triangular parcel of land on which the clubhouse still sits is a “perfectly logical place for a club facility, and a commanding view down the main channel of the marina.”

Though the building has historical significance to its members, it does not have a historic designation, according to Linda Dishman, president of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and our members,” Myers said. “CYC has been a beacon for the nautical community for the past 101 years.”

Materna, 68, first found out about the fire through Facebook as friends posted videos and photos of the damage Tuesday morning. Then he began receiving calls and text messages from friends.

“Everybody woke up in the morning and realized we’d lost a significant part of the sailing community,” Materna said.

His connection to the club dates back nearly 52 years, to when he was just 16 years old. After spending 30 years sailing professionally with Hobie Cats, mainly racing catamarans — a watercraft with two parallel hulls of equal size — he recently served as a crew member on other club members’ racing yachts.

The CYC is pivotal in the boat racing community, organizing and hosting events such as the Optimist National Championship and Junior Olympic trials, Materna said. He fondly remembers the hundreds of people from across the globe converging on the marina for similar events.

The main topic among members now is what’s next for the club. Dakoske Koslu noted that the club’s ownership changed over the last few years, and many are unsure and concerned about the club’s continuation after the fire.

The club relocated to the marina in 1967, leasing the land it sits on from the county.

“I don’t think the county has really valued the contributions of the California Yacht Club as an important part of the Marina. They value Trader Joe’s because it’s more money for them,” Dakoske Koslu said.

Dakoske Koslu said she’s seen numerous small marine-oriented businesses displaced from the marina, making way for more commercialized developments such as Trader Joe’s and Recreational Equipment Inc.

California Yacht Club was established in 1922 and boated its' first competitive rowing team back in the 1930's. In 1977, after a long hiatus, Stan Mullin, Ken Jacobs and Charles Hathaway reactivated rowing at the Club. CYC rowers now number about 60, and represent all abilities, ages and motivations.

Adult Rowing - California Yacht Club CYC is a great place for adults of all ages and skills to row out of Marina Del Rey. We have more than 60 active adult rowers with a wide range of interests and motivations varying from recreational, fitness, social, open water, and racing.
