The 9 Best Marine Speakers

Installing car audio speakers into your boat or yacht may seem like an easy way to cut costs, but regular speakers won’t last very long in maritime conditions. Instead, you should be willing to invest in true marine speakers, which offer sufficient protection from the high saline content of the ocean. To make it easy for you, we’ve put together our list of the best marine speakers available this year.

If this is your first venture into purchasing marine speakers, we’ve included a buyer’s guide at the end of the list to help you better understand what is important when buying a good marine speaker. We also have a comprehensive guide to installing marine speakers on your boat, including a list of the tools you’ll need.

Polk Audio DB651

The Polk Audio DB651 speakers feature woofers made from a polymer/mica composite and durable rubber surrounds which won’t fall apart under stress from moisture and heat, or time.

Quick Pick – Our Awards!

Best overall (our pick).

The Polk Audio DB651 marine speakers offer excellent sound quality and impressive durability thanks to the polymer/mica composite. These features, combined with their ease of installation and relatively affordable price, make this our top choice.

The Best Budget Choice

If cost is your deciding factor, then the Pyle PLMR60 Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers will be the way to go. For around $25, the PLMR60 is really affordable, with surprisingly good sound and durability. They are also a breeze to install.

Best Marine Speakers for Bass & Parties

If you’re looking to turn your vessel into a party boat, you want some bass and volume. If you’re looking for a marine speaker with a lot of bass then you’ll want to go for the Polk Audio DB691 6” x 9” 3-Way Marine Speakers . Not only do the DB691 have a good bass response, but they’re pretty loud too. Keep in mind, if you’re serious about your parties, you might want to include a subwoofer to accentuate the low-end.

Best Dual Cone Marine Speaker

Dual cone speakers are more affordable than coaxial, which is why many people install them. The speakers are often slightly more compact and weigh less than coaxial speakers. While the latter isn’t a major factor, this might be something to consider if you have limited space. The Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual Cone Marine Speakers sound really good.

1. Polk Audio DXi651 6.5” 2-Way Marine Speakers (Pair)

Mount depth.

8.7 x 14.5 x 4.3″

Technical Specifications

The DXi range includes several speaker sizes from 4” to 6” and the ever-popular 6” x 9”. For this article, we chose one of the most popular DXi speakers, the Polk Audio DXi651.

Drivers & Sound

The DXi651 is a circular speaker with a 6½” low-frequency driver and a ¾” tweeter. The DXi651 is sold as a pair, with each speaker producing 60W RMS and a 180W Peak. This is more than enough power for the back deck of most leisure boats. Even for a bit of a party while out on the water. The DXi651 does lack a little bass. However, this is only if you’re looking for a loud party marine speaker. For general background music and the odd party, the DXi651 will work just fine.

Amplification & Power

To power the Polk Audio DXi651, you want an amplifier with a minimum of 60W and a max of around 100W to 125W. We recommend pairing these marine speakers with the Soundstream Stealth Series SM4.1000D 1000W 4 Channel Marine Grade Class D Amplifier. At 4 ohms, you’ll get 90W RMS per channel which is more than enough to drive the DXi651. If you decide to go higher, be careful not to drive the speakers to distortion, or you risk blowing the speakers.

Installation

The DXi651 is really easy to install. If you follow the user manual, you shouldn’t have any issues. Make sure to use 16-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installation. All the necessary brackets are included with the speakers, so you have everything ready to go.

What’s in the box?

  • 2 x Polk Audio DXi651
  • 2 x Speaker grilles
  • 1″ Self-tapping screws
  • ⅜” Self-tapping screws
  • Speed clips
  • 2 x Spacer/Adapter brackets
  • 2 x Foam rubber gaskets

Polk Audio DXi651 6.5” 2-Way Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re looking for an affordable pair of marine speakers, then the Polk Audio DXi651 is a great option to consider. While the DXi651 does lack a little bass, the speakers produce crystal clear audio and are surprisingly loud. The DXi651 is quick and easy to install with everything you need (excluding speaker wire) included in the box.

2. BOSS Audio MR690 Weatherproof Marine Speakers

6” x 9” + 1”

10.6 x 8.9 x 4.0”

BOSS Audio design and manufactures an extensive range of budget car and marine audio products. The major benefit of choosing BOSS Audio is you can get everything you need from a single manufacturer at an affordable price.

The BOSS Audio MR690 is a pair of weatherproof marine speakers which can be combined with other BOSS Audio products to build a full marine sound system for your boat.

Each MR690 features a 6” x 9” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter capable of producing 175W peak per speaker. Even though these are “cheap” marine speakers, the MR690 sound really good. I wouldn’t recommend the MR690 if you’re looking for loud “party speakers” for the boat. The MR690 has a nice bottom-end sound, but I certainly wouldn’t call these bass speakers. Mid-range and high frequencies are clear with no issues there. For general use and background music, the MR690 will perform just fine.

To power your MR690 you will need an amplifier with a max of 175W per channel at 8 ohms. We recommend pairing the MR690 with the BOSS Audio MR800 Marine Grade Amplifier. The MR800 will push a little more power than needed, so don’t turn your gain full the amplifier.

You might want to also consider adding the BOSS Audio MGR350B Marine Gauge Receiver too. The MGR350B can be mounted on your dash and features Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, and a USB port.

The MR690 is really easy to install and comes with step-by-step instructions for you to follow. It is recommended you use 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire when installing these speakers.

  • 2 x BOSS Audio MR690
  • Speaker grilles
  • Magnet covers

BOSS Audio MR690 Weatherproof Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re looking for an affordable marine speaker, then the BOSS Audio MR690 is one to consider. With BOSS Audio manufacturing everything from speakers to amps and accessories, you can get all the audio you need from one supplier. The MR range comes in several different sizes, so if you need speakers for different parts of the boat, you’ll be sure to find the right size within the BOSS Audio MR series.

3. Pyle PLMR60 Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers

7.6 x 7.4 x 7.1″

If you’re on a tight budget and need a pair of cheap marine speakers, then you know you can always count on Pyle to deliver. The Pyle PLMR60 is a pair of waterproof marine speakers for a little over $20! That’s an incredible price, but are they incredible speakers?

The PLMR60 features two 6½” speakers with a 1” tweeter capable of producing up to 150W each. Installed as a pair, and you have 300W of power on the back deck of your boat. As is always the case with Pyle, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how good these cheap marine speakers sound. I wouldn’t put the PLMR60 in a bass speaker category, but the low-end response is decent for the price. The mid-range and high-frequencies deliver a decent clarity which most consumers will be more than happy with.

The PLMR60 has a power handling of 75W RMS to 150W Peak per speaker. You shouldn’t have an issue driving these speakers off a standard marine receiver. We found the Pyle PLMRB29 In-Dash AM/FM Receiver with MP3 playback and USB/SD/AUX Inputs is perfectly suited to drive the PLMR60. Alternatively, if you prefer to use an amplifier, the Pyle Hydra Marine 800W Amplifier is a great option to pair with your PLMR60 marine speakers and will work with any controller or receiver.

Pyle has made the PLMR60 easy to install with plug-and-play wiring from each speaker, ready to connect to an existing or new installation. The speakers come with grilles, mounting hardware, and full instructions to get you up and running in no time. If you have an existing system with holes and wiring already in place, you can install your new PLMR60 marine speakers in a matter of minutes. Use a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire when installing the PLMR60.

Pyle PLMR60 Dual 6.5” Waterproof Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re on a tight budget, then you won’t find any better in the $20 price range than the Pyle PLMR60. Even though these speakers are cheap, they sound decent and are surprisingly loud too. The PLMR60 can be run off most receivers or even one of Pyle’s micro-amplifiers. Pyle is another brand with a wide range of marine audio products, which means you can build your whole marine sound system using one affordable brand.

4. Kenwood KFC-1653MRW 6.5″ 2-Way Marine Speakers Pair

13.4 x 2.8 x 5.5″

Kenwood is always a good option for a more premium sound. I consider Kenwood a good middle-of-the-range marine speaker in terms of both price and quality. The Kenwood KFC-1653MRW is a great pair of marine speakers with good sound and quality parts.

The KFC-1653MRW is sold as a pair with a single 6½” low-frequency driver and a 1” tweeter in each speaker. These speakers produce a surprising amount of bass and volume. Mids and highs are crisp and clean, with good clarity for music and listening to talk radio or podcasts. With a decent amount of bass and volume, you can use the KFC-1653MRW as background music or even as a party speaker.

Each KFC-1653MRW speaker has a power handling of 50W to 150W at 4 ohms. You can use most dash-mount receivers to drive the KFC-1653MRW marine speakers. The Kenwood KMR-M325BT is the perfect match for the KFC-1653MRW, complete with Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, USB, and CD. If you want to turn these bad boys up a little, you might want to consider going through an amplifier.

The Kenwood KAC-M3004 Compact 4-Channel Digital Amplifier is an excellent choice to pair with your KFC-1653MRW speakers. With two channels bridged at 4 ohms, you’ll get 150W per channel, driving your KFC-1653MRW at their peak rating.

The KFC-1653MRW marine speakers are easy to install. The speakers come ready to plug and play, so if you are replacing an existing installation, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to hook up the KFC-1653MRW. Go with a 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installing with a receiver or 12-gauge if installing with an amplifier.

  • 2 x Kenwood KFC-1653MRW

Kenwood KFC-1653MRW 6.5″ 2-Way Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you’re looking for a good-sounding marine speaker, middle of the range, not a cheap brand but not too expensive, then the Kenwood KFC-1653MRW is the way to go. These speakers are really popular, with hundreds of positive reviews online. The KFC-1653MRW is a step up in quality from the cheaper brands at only slightly more money.

If you’re after some real power, you might consider going with the KFC-2053MRW, the 8” version of the KFC-1653MRW. The KFC-2053MRW has a much better bass response and, if paired with the right amplifier, is significantly louder.

5. NOAM NUTV4 Marine Bluetooth Speakers Stereo System

100W – 200W

2.1 x 1.3 x 3.8″

If you’re looking for wake tower mountable speakers, you might consider this complete system from NOAM. The NOAM NUTV4 is an all-in-one system with everything you need to get your wake tower rigged up with some serious sound. This package includes 2 x wake-tower speakers, an amplifier, and a remote with Bluetooth.

The speakers included in this package are 2 x NOAM N4 Marin speakers, each featuring a 4” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter. Each speaker produces 100W RMS with a 200W Peak. Some serious power and a good amount of throw, so you can hear these speakers clearly even from a distance. Obviously, with 4” drivers, the N4 Marin doesn’t produce a big bass sound, but they do have a nice punch to the low end. Mid-range is clean and clear with a nice crisp treble sound.

A NOAM NBTA4-A 4-channel marine amplifier is supplied with the system to power your marine speakers. Each channel pushes 100W at 4 ohms which is a perfect match for the N4 Marin speakers. The NBTA4-A can drive another two 100W speakers on the other channels, so you have enough power to add another two marine speakers if you would like.

Also included is the NBTA4-R Bluetooth remote control. The NBTA4-R control includes buttons for play/pause, track skip next, track skip previous, volume up, volume down, and a power/Bluetooth pairing button. Having the controller mounted on the dash lets you put your mobile or Bluetooth device away so it won’t get wet while still playing audio.

Installing the NOAM NUTV4 marine sound system is easy. Each part is designed to work in harmony with the other, so if you follow the installation instructions, you won’t have any issues installing the NOAM NUTV4 on your boat. NOAM supplies you with multiple rubber pads to fit a variety of mounting bar diameters. Also included are two 11.5-foot lengths of wire for the speakers.

  • 2 x NOAM N4 Marin speakers
  • NOAM NBTA4-A 4-channel marine amplifier
  • NBTA4-R Bluetooth remote control
  • 11.5’ Speaker wires
  • Speaker mounting kits

NOAM NUTV4 Marine Bluetooth Speakers Stereo System Conclusion

If you’re looking for an all-in-one wake tower marine stereo system, then the NOAM NUTV4 is an excellent choice to consider. The speakers are really loud with great sound quality. At under $200, the NOAM NUTV4 marine sound system package offers great value with all the necessary parts to get your wake tower blasting your favorite music.

You can use the NOAM NUTV4 Quad Marine Speaker package for bigger installs. The system is essentially the same but includes two extra NOAM N4 Marin speakers. Only two channels on the NOAM NBTA4-A 4-channel marine amplifier are being used, so you still have two spare channels to drive all four speakers from the same amplifier.

6.   Polk Audio DB691 6” x 9” 3-Way Marine Speakers

125W – 300W

6″ x 9″ + 1”

8.0 x 14.5 x 4.8″

Another speaker from the Polk Audio DB series is a little bigger and more powerful this time. The Polk Audio DB691 is a marine-certified 3-way speaker sold as a pair. The DB691 is for those who might be looking for more power over the DXi651, which is also featured in this article.

The DB691 is a 3-way marine speaker with a 6” x 9” low-frequency driver, a 1” tweeter, and a ¾” super tweeter (as named by Polk in the  DB series catalog ). The bass response is pretty standard and on par with most 6” x 9” drivers. Sufficient for most applications, but bass lovers will always find it necessary to add a subwoofer. Having said that, the bass response is fine for a boat install. The two tweeters ensure the mid-range and high-frequency response is clean and clear. The crisp highs offer good intelligibility for music and spoken voice.

While you can power the DB691 using a standard dash receiver, it’s not recommended. I will install an amplifier if you want to get the most out of these speakers. This will ensure the speakers are driven efficiently and prevent long-term damage from an underpowered amp source. We recommend using the Rockville RXM-F3 4-channel Marine Amplifier to drive the DB691. The RXM-F3 delivers four channels of 125W at 4 ohms which is perfect for the DB691. You have two additional channels to drive a subwoofer or two more marine speakers.

The DB691 comes with everything you need to install the speakers on your boat. If you choose to go with the Rockville RXM-F3 amplifier, this comes with all the cabling and accessories. So there is no need to purchase those extras. For the DB691, I would go with a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire.

  • 2 x Polk Audio DB691
  • Mounting kits

Polk Audio DB691 6” x 9” 3-Way Marine Speakers Conclusion

If you like the Polk Audio price point, but the DXi651 is a little underpowered for your needs, the DB691 is a better option. The DB691 has a standard bass response for a 6” x 9” speaker, which is more than enough for a boat. If you want to crack the DB691 for a bit of a party on the back deck, then it’s recommended you pair the speakers with an amplifier. A standard receiver won’t give you the power you need to get the most out of the DB691. At under $100 for a pair of 6” x 9” speakers, the DB691 delivers good sound and value.

7. JBL MS6520 6″ 2-Way Marine Loudspeaker

9.0 x 5.0 x 8.0″

If you’re looking for a more reliable, premium brand, then JBL is always an excellent choice. The JBL MS6520 is a 2-way marine loudspeaker sold as a pair. As you would expect from JBL, the MS6520 is made from quality parts with patented Plus One™ Woofer Cones, which increases overall sensitivity and low-frequency output.

The MS6520 features a 6” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter capable of producing up to 180W Peak. The sound of the MS6520 can only be described as clean and smooth. The low-frequency response is tight and full with a nice punchy bass sound. The mid-range is clear with a nice clean, crisp treble response. Great for music and spoken voice from radio or podcasts. You can hear the difference in audio quality between the JBL and other cheaper brands.

The MS6520 can be powered by most standard dash-mount marine receivers, so you shouldn’t have an issue adding these to an existing installation. If you are in the market for a receiver, then the Fusion Entertainment MS-RA70 Marine Entertainment System is a good fit for the JBL MS6520 marine speakers. The MS-RA70 does cost slightly more than most receivers, but then you want a premium dash unit to go with your premium JBL speakers.

Even if you have a receiver, I recommend you power the MS6520 using a JBL amplifier to get the most out of your speakers. The JBL MA6002 2-Channel Full-Range Marine Amplifier is a great match for the MS6520, with two channels delivering 60W RMS at 4 ohms. You can also include the Prospec Electronics JBL-PRV175 dash-mount controller with Bluetooth for a full JBL marine sound system.

JBL includes all the screws and accessories necessary to install the MS6520 speakers. Be sure to use a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire when installing the MS6520.

  • 2 x JBL MS6520
  • Speaker wire connections

JBL MS6520 6″ 2-Way Marine Loudspeaker Conclusion

If you’re familiar with the JBL sound, you’ll know their products are always top-notch. You pay a little more for JBL marine speakers, but you get so much more than cheaper brands in terms of both build and audio quality. The MS6520 is a great-sounding speaker delivering a smooth, clean sound across the frequency spectrum. At just under $80, the MS6520 is really well priced in relation to the cheaper marine speakers on the market. Even if you’re on a really tight budget, consider saving for a couple more months to invest in these awesome marine speakers.

If you’re looking for a little more power, then the JBL MS9520 6” x 9” marine speakers are part of the same range as the MS6520. The MS9520 delivers almost double the power as the MS6520 with improved bass response.

8. Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers

6.9 x 6.5 x 2.1”

If you’re a fan of Sony products, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers. A previous version of the speaker had many issues with the cones blowing after being exposed to salt air. This issue seems to be fixed now, and the latest version of the XSMP1611 hasn’t had any complaints.

The XSMP1611 features a 6½” low-frequency driver with a 1” tweeter in each speaker. The speakers sound really good. Great bass response, clean mid-range, and crisp highs. For both music and radio (or podcasts), the XSMP1611 performs well. The speakers are surprisingly loud, too, so you can crank these marine speakers up for the occasional boat party.

Most standard receivers will drive the XSMP1611 marine speakers, but you should consider one of the Sony marine receivers. We recommend pairing the XSMP1611 with the Sony MEX-M100BT Marine CD Receiver with Bluetooth and Sirius XM tuner. The MEX-M100BT delivers 100W of power at 4 ohms which are perfect for the XSMP1611 marine speakers. If you prefer to use an amplifier, the Rockville RXM-F3 4-channel Marine Amplifier is a good match for the XSMP1611 speakers.

The XSMP1611 is really easy to install, and Sony includes everything you’ll need to get these marine speakers installed on your boat. Be sure to use a 16-gauge or 14-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installation. The front grille is paintable, which is great if you prefer your speakers to blend for a better aesthetic.

The XSMP1611 is also available in a coaxial version, the XSMP1621, which is slightly more powerful with improved power handling.

  • 2 x Sony XSMP1611

Sony XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers Conclusion

Fans of Sony will not be disappointed with the XSMP1611 6.5-Inch Dual-Cone Marine Speakers. The XSMP1611 performs well across the frequency spectrum with a nice and solid bass response, clean mids, and crisp treble. While the original version of the XSMP1611 did have some issues, Sony seems to have fixed this with no complaints since. The XSMP1611 comes in at under $50, which is a really good price for a premium 6½” marine speaker.

9. Polk Audio DB521 5.25 Marine Speakers

8.0 x 14.5 x 4.8”

Another speaker from the popular Polk Audio DB series is the DB521 coaxial marine speaker. The DB521 are sold as a pair and are hugely popular online for their affordable price and good sound.

The DB521 features a 5¼” low-frequency driver with a single ¾” tweeter. The sound quality is good for a 5¼” marine speaker. However, the bass response isn’t as good as the bigger 6½” options we reviewed for this article. The mid-range is present with vocals and instruments sounding great. The treble is good but not as present as you get from a 1” tweeter. One thing the DB521 doesn’t lack is power. The DB521 is surprisingly loud for its size, and a pair should be more than adequate for the back deck of most boats.

As the DB521 doesn’t require a lot of power, it can easily be driven by most standard marine receivers. We recommend pairing the DB521 with a Kenwood KMR-M325BT marine receiver. The KMR-M325BT is a Bluetooth receiver with four channels delivering 50W of power.

If, however, you are looking for a little more power, then the Soundstream SM4.1000D 4-Channel Stealth Series Marine Amplifier is a good option to pair with the DB521.

Installing the DB521 is easy, and Polk Audio supplies you with everything you’ll need to mount these marine speakers on your boat. The grilles are chrome colored but can be painted to match your boat. Like the DXi651, you want to go with a 16-gauge marine-grade speaker wire for installation.

  • 2 x Polk Audio DB521

Polk Audio DB521 5.25 Marine Speakers Conclusion

Although smaller than most of the speakers in this article, the Polk Audio DB521 packs a punch. Maybe not as bass-heavy as the 6” or 6½” marine speakers, but the DB521 sound just as good and are surprisingly loud too. You can pick the DB521 for a little over $60 on Amazon, which I initially thought was a little expensive for Polk Audio, but they are worth the money for the sound and build quality.

Buyer’s Guide – What To Know Before Buying Marine Speakers

While we’ve presented which products we believe are currently the best marine speakers on the market, the reality is that each person has their individual requirements for what a product should do. We’ve written this buyer’s guide to help you make informed decisions about the selected products.

Potential Uses

While marine speakers are primarily geared towards boating enthusiasts, they aren’t limited to that purpose. You will even see some marine speakers used sometimes in open-topped cars like dune buggies or even on the patios of seaside houses. The benefit to marine speakers is the protection from salty ocean water, which can prove a problem for beachside residents.

If you plan on using marine speakers in a car, the process is pretty much the same as traditional car speakers (depending on the marine speaker model), while home audio installation may require a DIY approach or the use of a waketower marine speaker option.

Consider the volume of the speakers you’re looking at. While you could theoretically get away with lower volumes inside of the cabin, especially sealed cabins with low ambient noise.

If your prop causes excessive noise, you’ll need loud marine speakers to cut through that sound. We’ve included speakers that will, for most intents and purposes, provide enough volume. Waketower speakers sometimes offer a bit more volume than traditional cabin speakers.

We’ve included the advertised wattage for the products listed, which will help you refine your selection.

Sound Quality

While marine speakers aren’t exactly aimed toward critical listening, nobody likes owning bad-sounding speakers. This is one of the most common problems when buying speakers in a store. You will rarely get accurate feedback around the sound quality, and everything will be sold as a good-sounding marine speaker.

Our list only contains speakers that we think match our standards for sound quality. This means no metalic-sounding tweeters or muffled mid-range.

While price will always factor into the quality of a product, marine speakers are one of the few areas of audio where you can find extremely high-quality speakers at affordable prices.

You can typically get a complete setup with several speakers, amplifiers, and installation without selling a kidney. Our list features speakers of all price ranges but is mostly catered to the average budget.

Coaxial vs. Dual-Cone Marine Speakers

If you’ve researched car or marine speakers you would have come across coaxial and dual-cone speaker types.

Coaxial Marine Speakers

Coaxial speakers are the most common form of loudspeaker used in car and marine installations, available in both 2-way and 3-way setups. The design is such that the tweeter is mounted in the center of the woofer, partially obscuring it. Both the woofer and tweeter are separate drivers with either an internal or external crossover sending a separate audio signal to each.

By mounting the tweeter in the center of the woofer, the speaker’s footprint is greatly reduced, hence the popularity of car and marine installations where space is often limited.

Dual Cone Marine Speakers

A dual cone marine speaker is essentially a full-range loudspeaker with both the woofer and tweeter attached as a single driver. The biggest advantage of a dual cone speaker is the cost, as there are fewer parts. The disadvantage, however, is that without the audio separation, the dual cone speaker doesn’t perform as well as a coaxial marine speaker.

Marine Speaker FAQ

In the FAQ section, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about marine speakers.

What is Power Handling?

Power handling is the lowest and highest power a speaker operates at. Usually, two numbers are indicated, RMS wattage and Peak wattage, followed by the impedance – 2, 4, 6, 8, or 16 ohms. Marine speakers typically operate on 2 or 4 ohms. When matching a speaker to an amplifier , it’s recommended to pair the speaker with an amplifier that’s between 1.6 to 4 times more than the RMS of the speaker . This will allow the amplifier to handle any peaks. However, if your amplifier does not have a limiter, then you want to match the RMS of the speaker with an equal RMS output from an amplifier. Not only must you match the wattage, but you also need to match the impedance. If an amplifier puts out 100W, you also need to make sure you match the impedance, this will be indicated as 100W @ 8 ohms, for example. You need to make sure you have 100W 8-ohm speakers to match this. If you mismatch impedance, you could damage the speaker, amplifier, or both. Often this won’t happen straight away, so people think everything is working fine. But as soon as you get a clip or peak, the speaker will usually blow.

RMS vs. Peak Power Output?

When choosing your marine speakers, you’ll come across two power ratings measured in watts. The lower of these is RMS, also known as continuous power. RMS stands for root means squared and indicates the speaker can operate at this power level for long periods. Peak power indicates the maximum power a speaker or amplifier can handle for short periods. If your speakers are constantly distorting, you have mismatched your power handling, and the amplifier cannot keep up with the speaker. If your amplifier is too powerful, it will blow the speaker as soon as it clips. That’s why it’s important to read the manual and match your speaker RMS and Peak power accordingly.

How Do I Know What Cable Gauge to Use?

Knowing which speaker wire gauge to use can seem confusing at first, but it’s actually pretty simple. There are two main factors, length of cable run and the speaker’s impedance . The first thing you can control is the length. Firstly, for stereo systems, you must ensure your left and right cable runs are identical and as short as possible. So, while it’s fine to have a little slack at either end, avoid having an excessive amount of excess, especially a coil, as this generates heat. The longer your cable run, the more resistance the cable puts on the audio signal. Thus, you need to go up in cable gauge for longer cable runs. Secondly, you need also to consider the impedance of the speaker when choosing a gauge to match the length. Use the chart below as a reference for choosing your speaker wire gauge. For this article, we’ll only go to 8 ohms. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. Looking at the chart below , you can see why manufacturers recommend using a 16-gauge or 14-gauge speaker wire for most marine speaker installs.

Flush Mount vs. Enclosed Speaker vs. Waketower – Which to Choose?

When choosing speakers for your boat, you have three options, flush mount, enclosed speaker, or wake-tower speaker. Choosing the right type depends on where you plan to install your marine speakers.

What is A Flush Mount Marine Speaker?

The most common marine speaker is the flush mount. The same type of speaker is found in motor vehicles. These speakers do not have an enclosure and are mounted on the cockpit, under the seats, or somewhere inside the boat. Flush mount speakers make the most sense on a small boat because they’re out of the way and take up no room.

What is An Enclosed Marine Speaker?

As the name suggests, an enclosed speaker is a speaker enclosed in a box. These can be your bookshelf speakers, PA speakers, home entertainment speakers, and even soundbars. Enclosed speakers are not common on boats because of the amount of room they take up. There is more space for bigger boats like yachts and sports fishers, so you can mount the speakers on a wall or ceiling. The benefit of mounting enclosed speakers is they often sound better than regular flush mount marine speakers. Enclosed speakers can also be mounted higher up and angled towards a specific area for improved sound quality.

What Are Waketower Speakers?

Waketower speakers are useful if you have a bar or tower to mount the speakers on. These speakers are typically somewhat directional with a narrow dispersion. This means they can throw sound for some distance. Waketower speakers are not known for their bass response, but they can be very loud.

Can I Use Marine Speakers for My Home Near the Ocean?

If you’re installing in-wall or in-ceiling speakers outside your home and you live near the ocean, then it’s a good idea to use marine speakers. For example, the Kicker KB6000 marine speakers will be great for an outdoor patio or other sea-facing areas outside your home. Make sure you correctly match the power handling and impedance, as most home receivers are 8 ohms, whereas marine speakers for a boat are typically 4 ohms.

Hi there; Hoping you can help, I have 4 Sony marine speakers in my boat. I have always replaced them with no problem, the boat is a 2006 Cobalt. I found the model number to the last 8 I had replaced. The model # is XS-MP1620W/XS-MP1620B & SX-MP1610W/XS-MP1610. The circumference of the speaker hole is 5 7/32″, I do not want to carve a bigger hole in the hull to install, I simply pulled the cover off disconnected the wires and reinserted the new ones. They are white and I need 4. Is Sony no longer making that size? Here are the dimensions- Face-is 1 3/18, sticks out a little, not flush, length- inside the hole 3 1/2″ -my diagram shows total of 6 7/8″ needed to install. Will the Sony speakers listed on your site work. I am completely in the dark where speakers are concerned. thank you for your help. Respectfully, Theresa Manfredi-Smith Lake Havasu City, AZ

Hey there Theresa,

While I’m not too versed in that particular model, the cutout size and previous model suggests a 6 1/2″ driver size, which can often be mounted in similar cutout diameters. Have you looked at the Sony XSMP1621? These are very similar to the XSMP1620W you mentioned above. You can find this model available here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0066130KO/?tag=audiostance-amceda-20

I do suspect that these will fit into your existing cutout, with a little room – as the cutouts for these sizes tend to be recommended at just shy of 5″. I’d recommend taking a look at those and then the XS-MP1611.

The Best Marine Audio Gear: Waterproof Boat Speakers and Stereos 2024

Our picks for this year’s best-of-the-best marine speakers and audio equipment.

Rule #1 about buying audio equipment for your boat: if it’s not specifically made for life on the water, do not take it to sea. True marine audio gear is water-resistant, fog-proof, salt-proof and UV ray resistant. Marine receivers or head units come with coated circuit boards that don’t rust, rubber caps to cover all open inputs, and gasket sealed covers for all controls, knobs, and end caps. Marine speakers and subwoofers are built with plastic cones and rubber surrounds and come with weather-resistant mounting hardware. Anything less than true, marine-grade audio gear, and you’ll be tossing it before the season’s over. Rule #2: unless you own your own cruise ship, smart and efficient use of cabin space is critical, so look for an audio system you know will fit… while giving you the best possible bang for the buck.

Below are our picks for the best of the best by category, as chosen by experts - one of whom is both a life-long sailor and a recent inductee into the Consumer Technology Hall of Fame: our own founder, Bob Cole. So… you ready? Let’s shove off…

Questions along the way? Don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and talk to one of our audio technicians at 1.866.961.7781 or email us here . We love this stuff and want to help.

Kicker 45KM654 6-1/2" 4-Ohm Marine Coaxial Speakers - Pair

  • Nominal Power Handling:  65 watts
  • Maximum Power Handling:  95 watts
  • Sensitivity:  90dB
  • Frequency Response:  35Hz - 21kHz

There’s nothing like enjoying music on the open waters – especially if you are listening to great speakers like the marine-grade Kicker 45KM654 2-way coaxial speakers.

The 45KM654’s woofer cones are made of UV-treated polypropylene and then attached to the speaker’s frame with a durable rubber surround. The 3/4” titanium dome tweeters do a fine job of delivering stellar high-frequency response to each listener – even through the fair amount of noise when the engine is running and wind is whipping past.

Capable of handling up to 65 watts continuously (and up to 195 watts of peak power), these speakers will run well off a marine-grade amplifier. Adding an amplifier (assuming you don’t already have one) will increase both sound quality as well as volume potential.

Two pairs of stylish protective grilles are included to finish the speakers off quite nicely – one pair is white and the other is charcoal in color. These Kicker speakers are designed to withstand the punishing environment found on boats, so you can rest assured that you’ll be enjoying them for years.

The Best Marine Subwoofer Amplifier

Kicker KMA800.1 800 Watts Marine Mono-Channel Amplifier

  • Power Output @ 4 ohms:  300 watts x 1
  • Power Output @ 2 ohms:  600 watts x 1
  • Power Output @ 1 ohm:  800 watts x 1
  • Frequency Response:  25Hz – 200Hz
  • Wired bass control knob: Included

In need of a heavy-duty marine-grade amplifier to drive your new subwoofer(s)? Look no further than Kicker’s 48KMA800.1 monoblock amplifier. Measuring in at only 7-1/8” x 2-5/16” x 8-1/16” (WxHxD), this amplifier is compact, but powerful.

This KMA-series amplifier boasts pretty incredible power output: 300 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms, 600 watts x 1 @ 2 ohms, and 800 watts x 1 @ 1 ohm. To ensure that this amplifier keeps chugging along in the marine environment, Kicker applied a conformal-coating to the amplifier’s internal printed circuit board. The amplifier’s hardware is also resistant to corrosion and rust. This thing was designed to last.

The included remote bass knob allows you to dial in the perfect amount of bass response from the subwoofer(s) connected to this Kicker amplifier. Speaking of tuning, the 48KMA800.1 has an on-board bass boost to help emphasize the bass output of the subwoofer(s) as well as a subsonic filter to protect the subwoofer(s) from harmful ultra-low bass response. With these controls properly set, those subwoofers will be able to achieve fantastic volume with low potential of distortion.

Long story short: get this amplifier to get the most from your boat’s subwoofers. You won’t be disappointed.

The Best RGB-Lit Marine 10" Subwoofer Under $500

JBL 10" Stadium Marine Subwoofer - Each (Lightning Gray)

  • Woofer Size (in inches):  10"
  • Power Handling:  300 watts RMS, 900 watts peak
  • Sensitivity:  89dB at 2.83 volts
  • Frequency Response:  20 – 2kHz
  • Impedance:  2 and 4 ohms

So perhaps you have outfitted your vessel with some killer speakers, but what about that important bass response? We got the solution for you: JBL’s Stadium-series Marine 102 subwoofer! This marine-grade subwoofer features an IPX5 rating, so you know it’s ready for whatever life throws its way.

The Stadium Marine 102 employs JBL’s patented PlusOne woofer cone for deep and powerful bass response, and their Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI™) to allow you to flick a switch to select between a final 2- or 4-ohm impedance. Having this option permits you to get versatile in selecting the proper amplifier (or using one of your existing ones) to power this subwoofer properly.

Speaking of power, this subwoofer will handle up to 300 watts of power continuously and then up to 900 watts of peak power. And as far as placement of the subwoofer goes, the choice is yours because this is a free-air subwoofer, which means that you can mount it just about anywhere in the boat. Use an existing wall, cabinet, under a seat panel, etc.

The durable gray grille is a nice addition to protect the subwoofer from damage and it’s also UV, salt, and water resistant just like the subwoofer it guards.

The Best Value 10” Marine Subwoofer for Boats

Kicker 45KMF102 10" 2-Ohm Free-Air Marine Subwoofer

  • Power Handling:  250 watts RMS, 500 watts peak
  • Sensitivity:  86.27dB
  • Frequency Response:  30Hz – 500kHz
  • Impedance:  2 ohms

Adding bass to a boat can be a very challenging prospect. Don’t worry: Kicker’s got you covered with their 45KMF102 10” marine-grade free-air subwoofer. You can get the bass you crave without sacrificing much space at all.

Free-air? What’s that mean? It means that this Kicker subwoofer doesn’t need an enclosure to perform well, which is a good thing for a boat where space can be at a premium. Instead, this rugged subwoofer can be installed into places such as a cabinet, compartment, or in a bulkhead.

Due to the high potential of the subwoofer coming in direct contact with wind, water, salt, and UV, Kicker built the 45KMF102 to withstand all of these elements and come out on the other side grinning. The built-in water drainage system will keep the subwoofer running well and the included stainless steel hardware will resist corrosion quite well. A Santoprene rubber surround will keep the subwoofer in-check for a good long time, too.

Kicker’s 2-ohm 45KMF102 will handle up to 175 watts of continuous power and up to 350 watts of peak power, so you don’t need a massive amplifier to get the job done.

If protection of the subwoofer is required, Kicker does offer a sturdy ABS plastic grille with built-in LED lighting (Kicker 45KMG10C (charcoal) and 45KMG10W (white) grilles available).

The Best Value 12” Marine Subwoofer for Boats

Kicker 45KMF124 12" 4-Ohm Free-Air Marine Subwoofer

  • Woofer Size (in inches):  12"

  • Frequency Response:  30Hz – 500Hz
  • Impedance:  4 ohms

Bass is an integral part of every genre of music and adds so much in immersing you into the music. Out on the open water, this should be just as important as if you were sitting in your home. Kicker’s 12” 45KM124 is a wonderful solution and absolutely something worth considering for your watercraft.

This marine-grade subwoofer has a sealed box requirement of 1.25 cubic feet, so it doesn’t take up too much while delivering solid performance. The subwoofer’s durable polypropylene cone repels water with ease and the built-in water drainage system gets rid of excess moisture so the subwoofer can play as long as you need it to. The hardy Santoprene rubber surround on the 45KM124 will keep the woofer cone in-check, ensuring accurate bass response in addition to a long lifespan.

The 45KM124 has a 4-ohm voice coil and handles up to 175 watts of continuous power (and up to 350 watts peak). It’s mounting depth is only 5.5”, so finding a suitable enclosure for the subwoofer should be relatively easy. If you prefer a ported enclosure for this subwoofer, the box requirement only jumps to 1.75 cubic feet.

If protection of the subwoofer is required, Kicker does offer a sturdy ABS plastic grille (Kicker 45KMG12C (charcoal) and 45KMG12W (white) grilles available) with built-in LED lighting.

best marine speakers

This is a review of the best marine speakers in 2024

As a big fan of boating, music, and cool tech, I’ve spent years testing gadgets, and I’ve developed a keen ear for what makes a speaker truly great.

That said, let’s be real: picking the best marine speaker isn’t easy. Why? Because most speakers these days have very similar specs. Sound quality can be pretty subjective. Plus, the type of music you enjoy and where you’re listening can really shape your audio experience.

So, what’s the trick? It’s about finding a marine speaker that hits the sweet spot between quality sound, robust durability, and a fair price.

So it’s important you consider a balanced blend of sound quality, durability, and price when selecting your next marine speaker.

After checking out loads of speakers, I found that the Wet Sounds REVO 6 Marine Speakers are a standout for their superior sound quality, durability, and stylish backlighting. Making them a top-notch choice for boat owners who value high-quality and powerful audio in harsh marine environments.

Of course, not all boats or boaters are alike. That’s why I’ve included reviews for a variety of categories that might fit your needs even better.

Wet Sounds REVO 6 Marine Speakers

wet sounds | REVO 6-XSB-SS | High Output Component Style 6.5" Marine Coaxial Speaker with RGB Backlighting and Black Stainless Steel Grille

Sensitivity: 85.8dB

Dimensions: 6.5″ diameter

Power (RMS/Peak): 100/200 Watts

Frequency Response: 40 – 20,000 Hz

Best for: High-volume, crystal-clear audio and LED lighting for harsh marine environments

Say hello to Wet Sounds, a Texas-based brand that’s made a splash in the audio industry since 2005. Known for its innovative tech and robust performance, it’s a trusted name for us boat owners right here in the US.

Now, about the REVO V3 Series marine speakers. These bad boys are made for the open water. Crafted with a 6.5″ mid driver and a 1″ Titanium high-output dome tweeter, they pump out sound you wouldn’t believe. The result? Your favorite tunes sound better than ever, even over the roar of your boat’s engine.

They didn’t skimp on materials, either. With a rubber surround and a heavy-duty, injection-molded composite frame, these speakers can take what the sea dishes out. For us boaters, that means we can focus on the good times, without worrying about our audio gear.

Want to know what sets these speakers apart (besides their power and sound quality)? It’s the absence of exposed terminals in the back. You might not think it’s a big deal, but in a marine environment, it’s a game-changer. It means less chance of failure due to corrosion or moisture – that’s fewer worries for you and me.

The REVO V3 Series also features integrated RGB LED backlighting. It’s not just about the sound, it’s about style too. So, you can match your speaker’s glow to your boat, your mood, or the sunset – the choice is yours.

And remember the power. These speakers handle up to 100 watts RMS and can peak up to 200 watts. What does that mean in layman’s terms? Your music is loud and clear, just the way we like it when we’re out on the water.

Finally, with Wet Sounds, you’re backed by a 2-year limited warranty. If anything goes wrong (within the terms, of course), they’ve got your back. This way, you can invest in a sound system with peace of mind.

So there you have it. If you’re after top-notch sound on the water, Wet Sounds REVO V3 Series speakers, considered one of the best marine speakers out there, should be on your radar. Trust me, once you’ve heard them, you’ll wonder how you ever sailed without them.

A rich and robust sound that not only cuts through the ambient noise of the water but stands tall against the competition. These units don’t just play music – they bring it to life.

The 6.5-inch frame is designed as a direct replacement for most standard marine speakers. This means upgrading your boat’s audio system is virtually hassle-free, an important consideration for us boat lovers who would rather spend our time enjoying the water than tinkering with equipment.

The speakers come equipped with 0.75-inch tweeters, which are crafted from lightweight silk. This material has been specially treated to withstand the often harsh marine environment, including exposure to UV rays and salt spray. All JL Audio marine speakers, including this model, are saltwater-rated and built with corrosion and UV-resistant materials. This is not just an exercise in robust design, but a statement of durability and endurance. These speakers are not just built to sound great, but also to last in the harsh marine environment, giving you more value for your investment over the long term.

The M3-650X speakers boast a wide frequency response to 25KHz. This expansive range ensures that you’ll be able to hear all the lows, mids, and highs in your music with exceptional clarity. Select models of the M3-650X speaker series feature RGB (multi-color) illumination. This adds a visual spectacle to your audio experience, creating an engaging ambiance on your boat.

Sensitivity: 90 dB

Best for: LED Speakers

KICKER is a name that resonates with quality and innovation in the audio world. Known for its concert-like audio and rugged designs, it’s a brand that stands out.

The wave that’s been cresting for the past few years, captivating seafarers and audio enthusiasts, is the rise of marine speakers with LED lights, and it’s still going strong. Adding lights to speakers takes the music listening experience to a whole new level.

You see, the lights can create a stunning visual display that makes your favorite tracks even more immersive. Their presence adds a distinct charm and ambiance to your marine adventures. It’s like having your private light show, enhancing not just the aural but the visual pleasure of listening to your music.

Now, this brings us to the KICKER KM 6.5″ Marine Speakers. These speakers are equipped with a seven-color LED system. Imagine playing your music while enjoying the soothing glow of these lights – it’s a whole new sensory experience.

Here’s where it gets even more exciting. These speakers can be paired with the KICKER KMLC LED controller, allowing you to expand the light show to 20 colors and 19 different lighting modes! The atmosphere this creates is simply phenomenal, adding a vibrant touch to your evening cruises or deck parties.

However, if you’re expecting these LEDs marine speakers to pulse in sync with the beat of your music, you might want to adjust your expectations. While the KMLC controller offers an impressive array of light modes, it doesn’t seem to have the required electronics to support beat-synced pulsing.

Despite this, the KICKER KM 6.5″ Marine Speakers still offer a captivating light show that will add a whole new layer of enjoyment to your marine experiences

Let’s not forget about the sound – after all, that’s what KICKER is known for. These speakers deliver a robust and clear sound, working best with 65 watts of recommended power. This means you get to enjoy your music loud and clear even when the boat’s engine is roaring, or the wind is whistling.

So, for an immersive, audio-visual feast, the KICKER KM 6.5″ Marine Speakers with their vibrant LED capabilities are a fantastic choice. They’re about bringing the party to the seas, enhancing your music listening experience with a visual spectacle that matches the audio quality.

Plus, these speakers come with a solid three-year warranty when purchased from an authorized KICKER dealer, giving you peace of mind. Now that’s a deal that sounds as good as it looks!

If you want to be part of this trend, this is the way to do it. Enjoy the music, enjoy the lights, and most importantly, enjoy your time on the water.

Finally, these speakers come with Kenwood’s one-year warranty. So, if you’re aiming to take your boating experience up a notch, and perhaps replace some old stock speakers with functional ones without spending a fortune, these Kenwood marine speakers are a solid choice.

BOSS Audio Systems MR60W

BOSS Audio Systems MR60W 6.5 inch Marine Boat Stereo Speakers - 200 Watts (pair), 2 Way, Full Range, Tweeters, Coaxial, Weatherproof, Sold in Pairs

Frequency Response: 80Hz – 20,000Hz

Best for: Good value for money

BOSS Audio Systems is a well-known name in the world of audio equipment. They’re renowned for providing reliable sound equipment with solid performance.

The MR60W Marine Speakers are a pair of 6.5″, 2-way full-range speakers with a power handling of 100 Watts RMS and 200 Watts peak. This means you’ll enjoy good volume and clarity from these speakers. They can pump out your favorite tunes loud enough to be heard over the roar of the boat engine and the slap of the waves.

One of the best things about these speakers is they’re weatherproof. Whether you’re dealing with rain, fog, or the occasional splash of water, these speakers can take it all. This is ideal for boat owners because you know, as much as I do, how unpredictable the weather can be at sea.

Built with a polypropylene cone, these speakers deliver great sound quality. Polypropylene is a durable material that allows for maximum flexibility, which means it can produce deep bass and clear mid-range sounds. So whether you’re a rock’n’roll fan or more into classical symphonies, these speakers got you covered.

The treated cloth surround is another feature worth mentioning. It’s durable and works perfectly with the cone, providing excellent support for great excursions and even better sounds. No need to worry about your speakers getting worn out too soon – these babies are built to last.

Another notable feature is the composite basket. This is basically the frame that holds the speaker together. By using composite materials, BOSS Audio Systems made the structure stiffer and stronger than typical ones, resulting in better sound quality.

And let’s not forget about the warranty. These speakers have a 3-year manufacturer warranty if bought through an authorized dealer. You have the peace of mind of knowing that if something goes wrong, you’re covered.

The BOSS Audio Systems MR60W Marine Speakers deliver solid performance and great value for the money. While they may not last forever if you like to blast your music at full volume, they’re a solid choice for the average boater who wants a balance between price and performance. The 3-year manufacturer warranty adds some good peace of mind to the idea.

With 100 Watts RMS and 200 Watts peak power, these speakers pack a punch for their size. So, when you’re cruising out on the water and want your music to be heard over the engine’s roar or the crashing waves, these speakers have you covered.

The heavy-duty ABS plastic basket and grill help protect against the harsh sun rays that can often cause damage to boat equipment. So, they’ll stay looking good and performing well for longer.

With its low-profile design, these speakers won’t be an eyesore on your boat. They’re stylish and unobtrusive, and with their sensitivity of 90 dB and frequency response to 20Khz, they’ll provide a clear, sharp sound without taking up too much space.

They’re the standard 6.5-inch size, which means they’ll fit in most boats with ease. As a boater, that means less time fiddling with installations and more time enjoying your music on the water.

For the boat owner on a budget who doesn’t want to compromise too much on sound quality, the Pyle 6.5″ Dual Marine Speakers are a solid choice.

These Speakers are a hit on Amazon, racking up over a thousand positive reviews from boating enthusiasts like us. Reviewers often highlight the impressive sound quality for the price point. But there is a caveat highlighted by some reviewers – the speakers are really good as long as you’re not pumping out too much bass. Also, some users have reported a durability issue, with the speakers only lasting 6-12 months.

So if you’re thinking about this as a long-term investment, you might want to weigh that into your decision. But if you’re in for a good sound experience on a budget for the short term, these speakers continue to be a popular choice.

Buying Guide: 12 Factors To Consider When Choosing the Best Marine Speakers for Your Boat

Before diving into the specifics of each marine speaker, it’s important to understand the key factors that should influence your purchasing decision. Here are 12 essential considerations to help you find the perfect marine speakers for your needs and preferences.

Before diving into your search for the best marine speakers, it’s essential to determine their primary purpose. Your intended use will help guide your choice of speaker type, size, and power. Here are a few examples of different possible uses and the corresponding speaker requirements:

Casual Listening: If you’re a laid-back boater who enjoys smooth sailing or wants some tunes to set the mood while fishing, you might not need the loudest marine speakers on the market. A reliable set of waterproof speakers with decent audio quality should suffice.

Party on the Water: Suppose you’re known for hosting epic boat parties with pumping music. In that case, you’ll want to invest in top-rated marine speakers with higher power output and volume, like the best 6.5 marine speakers or even the best wakeboard tower speakers, to ensure your music can be heard across the water.

Watersports Enthusiast: For those who love waterskiing, wakeboarding, or any other adrenaline-pumping water activity, the best marine audio system might include the loudest marine speakers, such as wakeboard tower speakers, designed to project sound toward the person being towed behind the boat.

Home Theater on the Water: If you stay on your boat overnight and enjoy watching movies or sports events, a surround-sound marine audio setup could be your go-to choice. In this case, you’ll want to look for the best marine stereo systems that can provide immersive sound to enhance your entertainment experience.

By identifying the primary purpose of your marine speakers, you’ll be better equipped to choose a system that aligns with your needs, whether it’s casual listening, full-on party mode, watersports, or a cozy movie night on your boat.

When searching for the best marine speakers, it’s crucial to establish a budget that reflects your needs and wants. Take a moment to weigh the importance of each factor based on your specific requirements, which will help you make an informed decision when purchasing marine speakers.

Remember that investing in higher-quality speakers may save you money in the long run, as they typically offer better performance and durability.

Consider how much time you spend on your boat and what kind of experience you want while out on the water. Setting a realistic budget based on these factors will ensure you find the right balance between quality and affordability.

At the end of the day, it’s a personal decision, but remember that the primary goal is to enjoy your boating experience.

Whether you opt for top marine speakers or a more budget-friendly option, make sure your choice enhances your time on the water and brings a smile to your face during every boating adventure.

3. Waterproofing and weather protection

When choosing the best marine speakers, it’s vital to consider their ability to withstand harsh marine environments.

Look for speakers with high ingress protection (IP) ratings, which indicate resistance to water, dust, and corrosion. Additionally, opt for UV-resistant materials to protect your speakers from sun exposure.

Most marine speakers are water-resistant, typically rated IP65, meaning they can handle moisture, rain, and splashes. However, it’s always a good idea to double-check these ratings to ensure you’re getting the right level of protection.

If you’re looking for even more robust waterproofing, consider speakers with an IP67 rating, which are fully water protected and can handle the largest splashes or even temporary submersion. Keep in mind that the added benefit of complete water protection often comes at a higher cost.

If your speakers are likely to get splashed or exposed to significant amounts of water, it’s worth investing in fully waterproof speakers to ensure they stand the test of time and keep the tunes playing during your boating adventures.

4. Durability

When it comes to selecting the best marine speakers, durability should be a top priority. To ensure long-lasting performance in harsh marine environments, opt for speakers made of marine-grade materials.

Look for UV-resistant plastics that can withstand prolonged sun exposure and corrosion-resistant metals like stainless steel or aluminum that resist rust and damage from saltwater.

By choosing speakers with these durable materials, you’ll not only get better performance but also increase the lifespan of your marine audio system, providing you with more enjoyable and worry-free boating experiences in the long run.

In your quest for the best marine speakers, size is an important factor to consider. Before making a decision, take into account the available space on your boat or yacht for installing the speakers, considering both the mounting depth and diameter.

Smaller speakers may be suitable for tight spaces, while larger speakers can provide better audio output.

It’s important to note that there is no standard size for speakers. Marine speakers typically come in a 6.5″ diameter, but keep in mind that this size may have larger grilles.

For example, a 6.5″ speaker might have a 7.5″ grill.  Be sure to factor in these measurements when selecting the right speaker for your boat, so you can achieve the best fit and performance.

6. Mounting

When searching for the best 6.5” marine speakers, it’s crucial to consider the mounting options and ensure compatibility with your boat’s design. Different speakers offer various mounting options, such as a flush or surface mounting.

If replacing existing speakers: Carefully examine the diameters, depth, screw locations, and depths of your current speakers to ensure the new ones will be a suitable replacement.

For new installations: Consider the location, direction, and speaker type, whether it’s a large bass unit or small tweeters, to achieve optimal sound quality.

Magnetic shielding: Magnets and compasses don’t work well together, so avoid installing speakers too close to the compass. If you need to place them nearby, ensure the speakers or the compass have some level of magnetic shielding.

Taking these factors into account during the mounting process will help you achieve the best performance and enjoy your marine audio system to its fullest potential.

7. Compatibility

As you search for the best boat speakers, it’s essential to ensure they are compatible with your existing marine audio system or stereo receiver. Consider whether your system uses a wired or wireless connection, such as Bluetooth.

For wired connections, make sure to check the specifications of your amp or head unit to confirm that it supports the impedance (measured in ohms) of the speakers you plan to purchase.

Most marine speakers have an impedance of 4 ohms, but there are options with different impedance levels, such as 2, 6, or 8 ohms. Connecting speakers with mismatched impedance can result in reduced sound quality, distortion, or even damage to the speakers or amplifier.

Additionally, consider the type of connectors or cabling required for the speakers, such as RCA, speaker wire, or proprietary connections. This will help you avoid any compatibility issues and ensure seamless integration of the new marine speakers with your existing audio setup.

8. Audio Output Power & Volume

To get the most out of your marine speakers, it’s important to understand their power handling and sensitivity ratings, which will give you an idea of their loudness potential.

Higher power handling and sensitivity mean the speaker can produce louder sounds without distortion. Volume is measured in decibels (dB), while power is measured in wattage.

To produce more volume, a speaker needs to be able to support and draw more power. Power drawn by speakers is measured as peak wattage and RMS (continuous wattage). Manufacturers often list peak wattage, as these numbers appear higher.

However, RMS wattage is equally important. For example, if your amplifier provides 100 Watts RMS per channel and your speakers can only handle 85 Watts RMS, you might risk damaging or blowing out your new speakers. Always consider both the RMS and peak wattage of the speakers.

In some cases, amplification may be necessary to boost the volume. Speakers rated for 100 or 200 watts might not achieve their maximum output when connected directly to a typical stereo system. In this case, a marine-grade amplifier will be key in augmenting the audio signal to produce more volume.

Just remember that you’re not alone on the water, and having super loud music can quickly upset your fellow boaters. Always be mindful of your surroundings and enjoy your marine audio experience responsibly.

9. Audio Quality

When selecting the top marine speakers, you’ll want to ensure the best audio quality possible. Keep in mind that personal preferences and the genres of music you enjoy will influence your definition of audio quality.

Some rhythms may require more bass, making subwoofers a better choice, while other genres might benefit from higher tones and a speaker with a wider frequency range. Always remember that you’re constrained by the available space on your boat.

To ensure the best listening experience, look for speakers with a wide frequency range, balanced sound, and minimal distortion.

This will allow you to enjoy your favorite music genres with crisp, clear audio, providing an enjoyable and immersive experience while out on the water.

10. Design and Aesthetics

While the technical aspects of marine speakers are crucial, it’s also important to consider their design and aesthetics. After all, you’ll want your speakers to blend seamlessly with your boat’s overall appearance and style.

When choosing the best marine speakers, consider the color, shape, and overall design of the speaker grilles. Look for options that complement your boat’s interior or exterior and enhance its visual appeal. Some speakers even offer customizable or interchangeable grilles, allowing you to easily switch up the look to match your boat’s aesthetic or personal preferences.

By selecting speakers that not only perform well but also look great, you’ll create a cohesive and visually pleasing boating environment, making your time on the water even more enjoyable.

11. Ease of Installation

Another important factor to consider when selecting the best marine speakers is the ease of installation. You’ll want to find speakers that can be installed quickly and efficiently, without causing unnecessary headaches or requiring professional assistance.

When evaluating speakers, look for user-friendly features, such as pre-drilled mounting holes, clear instructions, and any included mounting hardware or templates. This will help streamline the installation process and ensure that your speakers are properly and securely mounted.

By selecting marine speakers that are easy to install, you’ll save time and effort, allowing you to enjoy your upgraded audio system sooner rather than later.

12. Brand Reputation and Warranty

When choosing your marine speakers, it’s essential to consider the reputation of the brand and the warranty provided. A well-established and reputable brand is more likely to deliver high-quality, reliable products that meet or exceed your expectations.

Research different brands and read customer reviews to get a better understanding of their reputation within the marine audio industry.

Warranties are another crucial aspect to consider, as they offer protection and peace of mind in the event of manufacturing defects or issues. Look for speakers with a robust warranty that covers an extended period, as this indicates the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s quality and durability.

By considering both brand reputation and warranty, you’ll be more likely to find the best that delivers exceptional performance and long-lasting enjoyment.

10 Best Marine Speakers in 2023

' src=

In this article we are diving headfirst, (no pun intended) for a look at the 10 best marine speakers in 2023. The audio-electronics market is literally awash with competing products, which can sometimes make it much tougher to distinguish the good from the bad.

As silly as it sounds, some marine speakers are more waterproof than others. Moisture resistance is measured in varying degrees, so some marine speakers we'll review today may be fine mounted inside a sheltered boat cabin, but won't fare too well against mother nature mounted on a mast in a monsoon.

Table of Contents

At a glance: Our top 3 picks

1. rockville rwb80b, 2. kenwood kfc-1653mrw, 3. kicker white oem, 4. sony 4 xs-mp1611, 5. kicker 11 kb6000w, 6. jbl ms6520 180w, 7. polk audio atrium, 8. kenwood kfc-2053mrw, 9. kicker 41km654cw, 10. magnadyne wr40w, what to look for in marine speakers, why do i need marine speakers, are marine speakers waterproof.

View The Best Marine Speakers Below

Rockville RWB80B

We review stacks of speaker options in our articles, so we're no strangers to a rocking set of Rockville's. Rockville manufactures some of the greatest models in terms of bass response on the market, so it's unsurprising that their meaty 2-way marine option offers some high power handling lows.

These marine speakers are designed as wake-board tower models. They easily mount to bars and roll cages. They're ideal for a range of vehicles, but the lengthy measures which Rockville have gone to protect these bad boys from the battering salty sea air make them a superb option for a marine mount.

These marine speakers are fully protected against salt and freshwater conditions. All terminals have been sealed with rubber gaskets. They are waterproof to a high degree and completely rust-resistant.

The woofers measure 8 inches and feature a high-grade polypropylene cone that has been mica-injected. It handles unbelievably well and is centered in a Santoprene surround to help dampen unwanted resonance which can cause bass distortion.

It's coupled with a hard-working, 1-inch dedicated mid-range tweeter, formed with a rigid polymide composite dome. It harbors a high-density, neodymium magnet and effortlessly copes with the delegated upper frequencies, thanks to the outstanding onboard crossover circuitry.

These marine speakers have a high peak power handling of 300 watts (200 RMS), sound pressure levels of around 98 decibels, a great frequency response, and low impedance.

Pros: + Waterproofed to handle outdoor marine conditions. + High output. + Easy to install.

Why We Liked It -These guys have had a few bad reviews, we’re not sure why. In general, Rockville speakers are pretty darn robust, and they handle impeccably under pressure with a high output. This pair is a testament to their top-notch engineering. If you're looking for some great sounding marine speakers, we highly recommend them.

Water Resistance - Though this might seem to be an over-obvious concern for marine speakers, it is worth double and triple checking whether the components of marine speakers are as water resistant as it might appear. It could be the case that the enclosure for the speakers is water resistant but the components, if exposed, are not, which could lead to trouble in the case of damage to the enclosure.

Kenwood KFC-1653MRW

Industry granddaddies Kenwood are a company with plenty of experience under their belts, producing some of the best marine speakers in the business .

Like the Rockville option reviewed above, these have a 2-way classification. While the bass on a Kenwood speaker tends to be more understated than a Rockville, these marine speakers produce very rich and well-balanced audio.

In direct comparison, these two-way speakers are a more compact and somewhat less powerful pair but actually ring up at around half the price, offering great value for money. These, too, are sold in pairs, and their 2-way array consists of a woofer and tweeter combination to efficiently sort the workload of the highs and lows to the appropriate driver for optimal sound performance.

The woofer is 6.5" and formed from a waterproof polypropylene composite. The balanced dome tweeter is just under an inch and is again constructed from materials that can withstand the weathering that marine life subjects a poor speaker to.

The drivers enable a fairly wide frequency response and share their duties harmoniously, thanks to Advanced crossover circuitry enhancements Kenwood has implemented. So if you're looking for a high-quality pair of speakers for your boat, we suggest you give these ones a try!

Pros : + Dedicated woofer and tweeter. + Waterproof components. + Affordably priced.

Why We Liked It - These are genuinely some of the best marine speakers for full-range natural-sounding audio quality . The crossover is seamless and we love that they are priced accessibly. Definitely a better choice for your boat than a boombox,  which can be super risky.

B015DA6VCC

Let's look at what marine-grade speakers Kicker has on offer. If you have read any of our other speaker reviews, you'll know we have a soft spot for Kicker's coaxial contenders.

Now first things first, these babies sell as a set of 4, and if you're truly serious about pimping out your deck, a bulk buy is worth its weight in gold.

They benefit from the same blood, sweat, and tears put into researching optimal driver performance and setup as Kicker's other best selling model.

Additionally and most importantly, many of the components have been refined and redesigned where necessary to cope with life at sea. They have been expertly crafted using only waterproof, rust-resistant, and UV-treated parts. These marine speakers feature sealed motors, stainless steel mounts, and locking terminal covers. M ost marine speakers are made with durability in mind, but these actually exceed some of the industry standards for a water-resistant boat speaker.

The weatherproof woofer is 6.5 inches and injection molded out of Santoprene, like the Rockville's. They powerfully handle the lower frequencies while the tiny 13mm dome tweeter is porcelain/enamel treated (PEI rated) and defines the crisp and crystal highs. They have a good frequency response for a 2-way class set, ensuring superior sound quality no matter what you're listening to.

Pros : + Full-range audio drivers. + UV-treated with water/rust-resistant parts. + 4-pack.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers serve up the same notorious killer full-range Kicker sound. Get depth and definition in a waterproof package, and experience high-end measures which surpass other speakers specifically designed by maritime manufacturers.

Add to this the fact that you get four marine speakers for a reasonable price, and you have yourself a difficult deal to beat.

Mounting Placement - If there is an indoor area on your boat to install your speakers, they will be better off in the long run, with fewer opportunities for damage stemming from unexpected contact with water, inclement weather, or exposure to the elements outdoors otherwise. Even indoors, the speakers must be fully water resistant.

yacht speakers

This stylish Sony set of four marine speakers makes for an awesome upgrade for your boat. They feature dual cones and measure 6.5 inches. The dual drivers have surprising performance and cope with a fair amount of input. They have 65 watts of RMS power, 130 per 4-pack, and a peak power rating of 140 watts (280 watts per 4-pack).

They are lightweight but very durably built with premium components housed in an IPX5-certified enclosure rendering them waterproof enough for marine use (UV-ray and salt-waterproof).

These marine speakers produce great-sounding audio. The crossover capably deals with the frequency response and workload balance. They have rustproof, low-impedance circuitry that has been refined by their years of expertise in their field. They are simple to mount (they can be front or rear-mounted) - they only require a cutout of 4-15/16 inches and a few standard spade wires. They come in classic black or white aesthetics and have removable grilles.

Pros: + Low impedance. + 4-pack. + Dual cone. + IPX5 waterproofing.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers make for another great sounding bulk buy option. They come from a trusted brand, so you know the sound quality is going to be excellent. W e're a little dismayed with the plastic waterproof grille, but the low price tag has to come with some sacrifices. Luckily, as we mentioned, the sound quality isn't something Sony wanted to comprise.

Kicker 11 KB6000W

Kicker's aquatic combating audio solution comes in the form of a mini-box speaker option. They are a rugged pair for rigging, suited to mounting in the sea breeze and stowing away below deck.

These boat speakers are another affordably priced 2-way classified system with dual drivers and great crossover circuits to deliver an accurate frequency response. They perform really well, effortlessly delegating the workload between the dedicated woofer and tweeter combination. They have great power at a high output, with a peak power of 150 watts (75 watts RMS each).

These marine speakers are easy to mount and come with all the necessary parts. Every part has been designed with longevity in mind. Kicker has coated circuitry to prevent rusting, and it is UV treated. All of the carefully sourced components have been enclosed in a waterproof cabinet, making it adequately equipped for any outdoor application .

Pros : + 2-way class array. + Block/box design. + 150 watts. + Affordable price.

Why We Liked It - These are a well-designed pair of boat speakers. T he enclosure has been IPX 5 certified, so they are ideal for mounting wherever you choose. And with the good sound quality Kicker always provides, you can't go wrong.

JBL MS6520 180W

JBL provides a nice low-profile option for your boat's interior with this reasonably priced pair of marine-grade speakers . They feature JBL's patented Plus One woofers, which are the key ingredient to some of their other best-selling speakers. The ingenious Plus One technology helps maximize the surface area of the woofer cones, a design concept that enhances the high-quality sound response and performance.

The woofer is coupled with a dome tweeter to cover a broad range of frequencies. The tweeter deals with high energy exceptionally well, with cooling in place. Together, they provide audio with real depth and clarity.

These marine speakers have individually voiced drivers and are designed to battle the elements. They feature waterproof motor structures and a one-piece cast polymer basket, sealed magnets, and rubber surrounds as a dampening measure.

Pros : + Plus one tech. + High-quality components, including a rubber surround . + Great value for money.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers are a surprisingly powerful pair with unparalleled dispersion. The Plus One tech is a great addition to the woofers on any JBL speaker system, providing high-quality audio with the best bass response .

Polk Audio Atrium

If you like the mini-box design style of the Kicker KB6000s, then these stylish marine speakers from Polk's Outdoor Atrium series are well worth a look.

They are an exceptional pair that raised the industry standard when they first appeared on the market in 2002. Their recipe for broader open-space coverage and tough environmental endurance meant they exceeded the performance abilities of military specification models.

Their power handling and frequency response is optimized for high-tolerance and durability against the elements. The tweeter domes are made from anodized aluminum and feature rubber surround for deadening unwanted vibrations. The baffles are designed to disperse the sound more effectively in a large area without compromising definition and clarity.

Installing speakers doesn't have to cause a headache. These marine speakers mount effortlessly. The speed-lock system provides easy and safe installation under extreme weather conditions, which only requires the use of one hand.

Pros : + Rugged build. + Treated military-grade components. + Broad outdoor dispersion. + Easy speed lock, one-handed mounting.

Why We Liked It - These are a heavy-duty set of marine-grade speakers that genuinely mean business. The design protocols in place protect against extreme weather, making them suitable for marine environments .

Kenwood KFC-2053MRW

This Kenwood pair is another superb marine speaker selection. In direct comparison to the first Kenwood pair we reviewed, this set offers a slightly larger woofer (at 8 inches) and a lower price tag. For a bargain 2-way class speaker, the sound quality is actually astounding.

The volume levels can be raised without distortion or break up, filling even the largest of cabins. So feel free to listen at a loud volume without worrying about the audio quality of these marine-grade speakers.

They also have a meatier max wattage than the KFC-1653MRW model, totaling about 300 watts, so these little guys are deceptively powerful.

They are also well-balanced. The dual drivers work hand in hand with one another. The lows are pleasantly surprising, providing deep bass, and the highs are crisp and high-def, thanks to the 1” dome tweeter - it performs exceptionally well.

They are arduously engineered, taking Kenwood's specialist audio skills to waterproof depths. All components are treated to be moisture-resistant. The motors are faultlessly sealed for ultimate protection against any marine environment .

Pros : + Superbly made. + Low-priced. + High output and excellent sound quality.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers are a thoroughly thought-out, well-designed pair. They have practically flawless circuitry and are very user-friendly for a quick and easy install. Not to mention, the sound quality is fantastic.

Kicker 41KM654CW

We've reviewed a few Kicker speakers on this list, and it's no surprise why. Providing high-quality sound time and time again, Kicker's audio systems are second to none. These 2-way marine-grade coaxial speakers are no exception. This set of four has a peak RMS power handling of 65 watts per speaker, totaling 360 watts.

They have a heavy-duty, waterproof design constructed from quality materials. Each component has been treated to withstand exposure to moisture. They feature a waterproofed 3/4" titanium dome tweeter. The surrounds are marine-grade rubber composites, and the motor is completely encased.

These marine speakers are fairly simple to install and provide an impressively loud, well-balanced cabin-filling sound, which has wide dynamics, nuances, and crisp details.

Pros : + 4–pack. + Waterproof. + High power output. + Dynamic, balanced sound with great sound clarity. + Excellent value for money.

Why We Liked It - If you have a decent amplifier and aren't too concerned with power consumption, these coaxial speakers make for an impressive upgrade to your stock speakers. They have a very high sound quality, given their low price. If you're looking for new speakers on a budget, these ones offer the most bang for your buck.

Magnadyne WR40W

Amid an armada of pretty poorly performing cheap options, this marvelous Magnadyne marine set certainly makes some waves. They are very well-designed and extremely low-priced, outperforming most marine speakers in the lower-price regions. At around 25 bucks for a pair, their surprising performance is pretty unbeatable.

They are marketed as OEM hot-tub speakers, but they work tremendously well for outdoor and marine applications.

These speakers feature a dual cone design, effectively making the most of compact space and achieving the widest frequency response possible at the same time.

They have a low wattage, so they won't demand too much of your vessel's power. The max power handling for each speaker is 25 watts, but they still manage to pack a pretty impressive punch.

They are moisture, heat, cold, and shockproof. All electrical components are encased, and they come with permanently attached integrated grills. They are simple to mount and work as exact replacements for all OE tubs.

Pros : + Dual cones setup. + Low output option. + Very resistant. + Cheapest product of today's reviews.

Why We Liked It - These marine speakers are a very cheap option that still performs well. They're ideal for those on a budget without a lot of options. They aren't the loudest speakers going but for the price, they're pretty unbelievable value for money.

Size - When it comes to marine speakers, bigger hardware doesn't necessarily translate to greater efficacy or efficiency in sound transmission. It is more worthwhile thinking about amplifiers and subwoofers to boost the quality and volume of your sound than shopping around for units that boast size as a proxy for volume and quality.

Marine Speakers Buying Guide

It might seem completely redundant to mention, but water resistance is paramount. There are models masquerading as marine speakers , so you need to know what to expect as standard in a marine-suitable set. All electronics need to be housed in an airtight/water-tight sealed unit. Any metallic components need to be made of metals that do not rust, or they need to be treated to prevent/eliminate rust (rust-proofing).

The surround of a cone is important in keeping your audio noise-free. They need to dampen vibrations that aren't audio wave responses. Typically companies use rubbers and other flexible composites, but the sun can damage these materials quickly - so surrounds should be duly protected either by clever grille designs or UV protective treatments.

In general, if your marine speakers are for your interior mounting, they don't need to be quite as hardy as their exterior counterparts. But seeing as the humidity level, rising damp, and mold can all be indoor cabin issues, the more water they can handle, the better the outcome is in terms of life expectancy.

If you want reasonable audio quality, then a 2-way class system is sufficient to handle a wide enough frequency response. For outside mounting, you will probably want something with a widened dispersion so that the audio doesn't get lost in the open air.

Of course, and importantly, you have to consider your power consumption. Usually, it's better to have something with lower output unless you have the increased power capabilities for meatier audio systems .

Although waterproofing and durability are most likely top of your mind, make sure you pick a marine speaker with great sound. M any marine speakers will have a range of features (such as silk dome tweeters or horn tweeters) to ensure crystal-clear sound quality. Remember, the best boat speakers won't just weather the elements - they'll make for an easy, distortion-free listening experience.

Some audio systems even come with a range of other features, such as LED lighting, and more.

If you don't have a vessel, you probably don't require a marine set of speakers. That being said, their waterproof nature makes them ideal for many other vehicles where using ordinary speakers just isn't possible , such as caravans, camper-vans, and off-road vehicles, including quads which kick up a lot of dust. This is because waterproofing methods are also weatherproof. They're also typically dust-tight as well as water-tight.

They are also ideal for pool surround speakers or installation in spas and saunas, and other locations where there is a possibility that they may get wet.

Yes, they are. The majority we have looked at today are rated fairly highly. However, some of them are water-resistant as well. If you have enough cash to part with, there are many models on the market that are waterproofed so well they can withstand full submersion in liquid and live to tell the tale. To be considered the best marine speakers, they have to tick many important factors off the list. They must be deemed suitable to survive in all weathers.

All circuitry mounting and other metals on your marine speakers should be made from rust-resistant material. Typically this will be stainless steel, as it is relatively cheap and strong.

When we talk about waterproofing, we usually IP rate the enclosure of the item, designating it a number that relates to how 'dust-tight' and waterproof the housing of the product is. If it is suitably dust and airtight, then we deem it protected from water and other particles getting inside to damage internal parts.

The numbers go from 1-7, with 1 being the lowest possible protection. Speakers then go from condensation-proof to water-droplet-proof. Then, you'll be able to find models protected against water spray or low-pressure jets and onto strong waves and temporary immersion. Finally, 7 is the highest rating and indicates the item is protected sufficiently against the damaging effects of prolonged immersion.

Finding a quality set of marine speakers is a far easier task than it once was. You are no longer required to find a specialist store; the world wide web has made it far easier to discover a fab upgrade.

When pimping out your pontoon, you'll ideally want to find replacements that are the same size as the existing speakers for the smoothest installation. As mentioned in our guide, you'll need to consider your power consumption and the capabilities of your amplifier unless you're going for a complete system overhaul with more freedom.

Waterproofing is a technological advancement in which we are far more knowledgeable nowadays, so thankfully, the products available are much better than they once were. With the sheer amount of talent on display from top manufacturers, finding an excellent set of speakers for your boat should be a breeze. That is, as long as you know what to look for. Hopefully, our reviews and buyer's guide will have served their purpose in helping you make an informed purchase.

Expert Tip:

If you are a novice renovating an old vessel, it might be worth looking at some complete systems. If you are completely new to the world of wiring up a sound system, many of the speakers we've reviewed today are designed with a flagship amplifier in mind.

The right set of marine speakers can really enhance your boating experience. A good sound system will make your day out on the water even more enjoyable. Whether you’re driving a car, or piloting a boat, everything is better with music. And while most modern boats come equipped with a marine sound system as standard, they need much better speakers if you want to actually hear what you’re listening to.

Most standard marine audio systems don’t have enough power to be heard over the hum of the engine or the crashing of waves. That’s why you need to invest in some serious marine speakers. While it might seem like a good idea to transplant your car’s old audio setup over to your boat, think again. Marine speakers are made of tougher stuff, and for good reason.

Marine speakers have to be able to resist a wide range of conditions, from salt water splashes and punishing rain, to harsh winds and powerful UV rays. All of these can cause serious damage to regular speakers, and that’s why you want marine-grade products aboard your ship.

To make sure you get the best marine speakers you can buy we’ve compiled a list of the top products currently available, with a short buying guide to help you find the right setup for your boat and audio system.

Polk Audio is a big name in the audio industry, and the brand has a number of excellent marine speakers on the market. However, we like the brand’s 2-way, marine certified DB521 coaxial speakers best.

They’re marine rated speakers, but they can also be used in your car or truck too. The most impressive feature about these speakers has to be the price tag though. They’re very cheap, but in a good way.

The speakers are manufactured from a wide range of top-level materials. For example, the dome tweeter is made from 0.75” silk-polymer, and the speaker cone is formed out of a polymer and mica mineral composite blend. The result is clear sound, big bass, and very crisp audio.

The clever use of materials helps protect these speakers from harsh marine environments. For example, these speakers are fitted with waterproof butyl rubber surrounds; these keep the water out of your speakers, helping them last longer, whilst simultaneously boosting your bass.

Each speaker is also IP55 rated, which means that they’re waterproof enough. They also resist dirt, salt, humidity, and UV rays too.

These speakers come equipped with a Dynamic Balance speaker. This means that the speaker will adjust itself for the best sound equalization, setting the correct bass, middle, and treble levels for the audio that you’re listening to.

With a peak power output of 300W and frequency ranges between 55Hz and Hz, you can enjoy a full range of sound with big volume. In short, these are big volume speakers for a small and affordable price tag.

They are water resistant though. The difference is that it can handle a bit of water spray, but it can’t be submerged or exposed to a real splash. While they’re not waterproof, they are protected against UV ray damage, fog, and light rain. All in all, it’s not bad for such a cheap set of speakers.

In terms of sound quality and power, these speakers have a frequency response of 80Hz to 20,000Hz, and an impressive sensitivity of 89dB. The system is rates at 150 watts, which isn’t as high as it could be, but it does have an impressive volume that doesn’t distort the sound quality.

Power: 180W Dimensions: 6.5” diameter Weight: 3.09 lbs Top Features: The Plus One woofer technology is a great addition

The speaker’s voice coils have been constructed from aluminum, offering strength and flexibility to provide the best audio quality that they can. A molded ABS plastic basket holds everything in place, with no rattles or distortions of any kind.

These well-made speakers are also waterproof. However, we recommend against getting them wet. They can handle light spray and light splashes, but anything heavy will probably hurt them. Even if they do get wet, these speakers feature rustproof mesh covers, rubber components, and other weatherproof protectives.

In terms of sound, these 150 watt speakers have more than enough power to make your music heard, without any distortion or sound deterioration. They can operate on frequencies between 45 Hz and 16,000 Hz, with a large 20 ounce magnet keeping your sound in good order.

Buying The Best Boat Speakers: A Guide

Buying new speakers isn’t as easy as selecting a set online and plugging them in. There are quite a lot of factors to take into account before you hit the buy button. They need to have the right volume and good sound quality, and they need to be the right size and shape, and able to withstand everything that a life on the water can throw at them.

With so many products on the market it’s hard to know what’s good and what’s not. If you want to make sure that you get the best music playback experience that you can, here’s some buying advice!

The first thing to consider when upgrading your factory speakers to aftermarket units is their purpose. Naturally, since we’re talking about marine speakers, we can assume that they’re going to be fitted to a boat. But what will you be doing on the boat? What kind of speaker you need will depend on what activities you undertake onboard.

For example, if you’re a casual fisherman and you just want a bit of background noise or gentle music while you’re fishing from a stationary boat, then you probably won’t need to invest in powerful speakers. However, if you’re into water sports and want to blast music while you’re towing wakeboarders and skiers, then you’re going to need some serious volume output.

Louder speakers require a higher wattage. Working out what you need them for, and what power they require, is a good place to start your search.

Output & Volume

Power is measured in wattage, but volume is measured in decibels. Speakers that can draw more power can make louder noise. And that’s great when you’re out on the ocean with no one else around you. But what about when you’re moored at the marina, or dropping anchor in the middle of a lake ? Loud speakers can get you in trouble with your neighbors really quickly.

That’s why it’s important to find a set of speakers that can play music loud, but can also play music well at a lower volume too. Good speakers from reputable brands will produce sound without distortion at both high and low volumes, and a good volume range is what you need.

It’s also worth remembering that sounds of over 85 decibels can lead to hearing damage, and 100 dB or more has been known to cause permanent hearing loss if you’re exposed to it for 15 minutes or more. Keep that in mind too!

Elemental Protection

If you’re buying boat speakers, they need to be waterproof—or at least water resistant. They need to be built from components that can successfully resist water, and stop water from creeping in. Moisture contamination can ruin circuitry, corrode components, and destroy your speakers from the inside out.

That’s just rain water. Salt water can be even more aggressive. Sun and UV ray damage can make even the sturdiest looking products wither and fall apart if they’re not built with UV resistant materials.

Since boats are exposed to a wide range of weather conditions, and at the most extreme ends of the spectrum, investing in hardy, weatherproof speakers is a much better idea than buying a pair of cheapies and hoping for the best.

How and where you plan to mount your new speakers will no doubt influence your buying process. If you’re planning on an entirely new audio experience, there’s lots of research and planning that you’ll need to do first, but we’ll get to that a little further down. Most boaters will want to use their existing factory speakers, but even that can be a trickier task than you’d think.

Replacing Existing Speakers

Replacing your existing speakers is the easiest way to improve your sound system. Naturally, you’ll want to find replacement speakers that have the same dimensions as your old ones, allowing for easy installation. Diameter’s are one thing, but don’t forget to look at depths, screw depths, and mounting locations before investing. Once you know what you’re looking for and what will fit your existing holes, you’ll be able to find a suitable set of replacement speakers.

Even though this is an easy task, it can be further complicated with dodgy wiring. While you’re replacing your speakers, take a moment to check the wiring and make sure everything is ship shape before calling the job done.

If you’re feeling more adventurous and want to go for a whole new system, with new speakers and locations, you’re going to need a little more planning. Here are a few key factors to take into account while you’re planning your audio renovation.

Installing speakers in a new location can be difficult. First, you’ll need to follow your speaker’s mounting template to see what hole dimensions need to be cut, and to what depth. Before investing in new speakers, check that they will fit where you want to mount them.

Sound waves travel in certain directions, and when you mount a speaker you need to keep the direction of sound in mind. Once mounted, speaker sound direction can’t be adjusted. Some speakers can be tweaked, but most cannot. That’s why you need to place them correctly from the beginning.

They should face towards the area of your boat where you want your music to be heard the most. And that’s not all. You also have to consider the balance of sound too. Sound needs to be heard by both the left ear and the right ear, and that’s why most speakers are mounted to the left and right sides of a boat or car.

Speaker Types

Finally, you should be aware of what kind of speakers that you want. Do you need large bass units that can really thump out low sounds, or do you need a couple of extra tweeters to enhance your treble?

You are at the mercy of your boat’s size, really. We recommend finding speakers that deliver the best sound but take up as little space as possible. After all, you’re on a boat, where space is always at a premium.

Magnetic Shielding

Magnets and compasses don’t mix. Speakers require magnets, and navigation requires a compass. Or rather, it used to. Nowadays, most people don’t rely on manual compasses, but there are still devices out there that can be affected by magnets, and the last thing you need when you’re out on the water is  distorted readings.

If you want to install speakers near any of your navigational equipment, ensure that they have magnetic shielding. If they don’t, mount them as far away from your navigation gear as possible.

Amplification

An amp is an essential piece of audio equipment if you really want to get the most out of your speakers. A set of speakers can be rated at any power, be it 100 watts or 300 watts, but they’ll never reach that kind of output on their own. They’re at the mercy of the stereo’s maximum power output. An amplifier can boost an audio signal from a stereo and amplify it to a louder volume without distorting the sound.

If you want to install an amplifier, make sure you get yourself a marine amplifier that has been built to withstand marine environments and all the salt and spray that goes along with it.

Lastly, there’s the matter of your budget. Audio equipment can cost as little as a few dollars to tens of thousands. We recommend that you set yourself a realistic budget and stick to it. This budget should reflect how much you’re willing to pay and how much you actually use your boat. If you use your boat for an hour, one day of the year, then don’t spend much on a new speaker system.  However, if you spend all of your time on board, then treat yourself to something decent.

Also factor in the cost of a good marine stereo , an amplifier, and all of the other accoutrements that go with marine speakers.

What’s the best speaker option for your boat? There’s no single product that’s the best. What works for one boater might not suit another. Still, if we had to choose a top three, for different criteria, these would be our favorite options:

If you’re looking to spend less, then the Pyle Dual 6.5-inch speakers offer great value for money. These budget units are well-made, weatherproof, and offer high quality audio playback with a broad frequency response. Installation is easy and painless, and each unit ships with a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer.

At the other end of spectrum—but still not at all overpriced or reserved for the mega wealthy—we would recommend the Rockville RWB80B 8” Speakers. They’re more expensive than others on the list, but they’re designed to deliver big sound in a tough environment. They’re made for wakeboarding towers, so you can get an idea of just how robust (and loud) these speakers have to be.

Lastly, we’d say that the overall best marine speakers, that aren’t too cheap and aren’t too expensive, would be the Polk Audio DB521 speaker system. These offer the best value for money, with great sound quality, in a durable package that won’t let you down, for a price that won’t leave you bankrupt.

Best marine speakers: Bring music to your boat with these top choices

The best marine speakers can bring an extra level of musical or audio book joy to life afloat, whether you’re on a day out with friends on a fast open boat, or mid Atlantic on the adventure of a lifetime.

When planning to fit marine speakers they need to be located at a safe distance from compasses and from any sensitive on board electronics.

A distance of at least 1.1m (3ft 8in) is usually required. I’ve come across more than one boat whose speakers had to be moved after the cut outs had been made in the cockpit. You know the old adage: measure twice, cut once.

Well, check your compass while you’re at it.  The best marine speakers can pack a punch,  but they can also knock your compass off by a fair bit too. Be mindful of where you site them!

You’ll be needing a decent stereo to power these little beauties, so have a look at my buyers guide to marine grade boat stereos : 7-of-the-best-boat-stereo-and-marine-media-systems

2. Osculati 2 Way Waterproof Speakers

Specifications : Separate tweeter, waterproof, 80 Watts

Reasons to buy: Great budget option, decent fitting size

Reasons to avoid: Sound quality not great at lower frequencies

These 60W waterproof stereo speakers are very much at the budget end of the market. However, they will get your boat fitted out with decent sound without breaking the bank.

On the downside, despite the separate tweeter and woofer cones (hence 2-way in the product name), frequency response is quoted at 80-20,000Hz. This means lower tones will not reproduce accurately.

Some of the more expensive options will therefore be a better buy if good sound quality at lower frequencies is a priority.

Overall diameter is 160mm, a cut out of 125mm diameter is required and total depth is 57mm. Minimum compass safe distance is 1.1m.

In addition to the main speaker there’s a 1-inch balanced dome tweeter and frequency response is specified at 55Hz-20,000Hz, with an impedance of 4 ohms.

They are hefty items at 8.8lb (4kg), with the ferrite woofer magnet alone weighing almost one pound.

These are ideal if you’re looking for good all-round performance from a sensibly priced marine speaker, but make sure your boat’s batteries are up to the task.

While you’re buying speakers why not upgrade your boat’s stereo unit as well? Fusion’s latest model is a no-brainer for many boat owners is it offers as many features of a high-end marine stereo system as possible at an affordable price.

It benefits from modern aesthetics and an anti-fogging display, plus water resistance to IPX6 and IPX7 standards.

In addition to conventional FM and AM reception there’s also a built-in DAB tuner.

1. Sony XG500

Specifications: 30 hours of battery life, water resistant and dustproof

Reasons to buy: Good waterproofing, great battery life (30 hours)

Reasons to avoid: Heavy, requires charging

Waterproof portable speakers are sometimes a better option than fixed units.

Sony’s XG series is rated to IP66 and has 30 hours of battery life. Even a quick 10 minute charge will provide up to a further three hours of use.

Despite the need for compactness, a mix of speaker types, including passive radiators for a punchy base, plus high efficiency tweeters, helps to produce impressive clarity across the frequency range.

The unit weighs 5.6kg and includes two USB charging ports, as well as an ambient lighting mode.

2. Bose Frames Tempo

Specifications: 17.53 x 10.41 x 7.62 cm, 1 Lithium Ion batteries required (included)

Reasons to buy: Scratch and shatter resistant, Premium feel from quality manafacturer

Reasons to avoid: Only IPX4 water-resistant, only 8 hour battery-life

You might wonder what a pair of sports sunglasses is doing in this listing. This is not a mistake – these IPX4 water resistant sunglasses have a speaker in each temple.

The idea is to enable you to listen to favourite tracks or podcasts without using earbuds that cut off ambient noise. This enables you to stay more in tune with your surroundings and therefore helps to maintain situational awareness when on the water.

The polycarbonate polarized lenses are scratch and shatter resistant. They can also be changed to suit different sports and lighting conditions. Battery life is up to eight hours.

3. Fusion StereoActive

Specifications: B uilt-in Li-ion batteries provide up to 20 hours of play, 40 watts

Reasons to buy: Robust, Waterproof, Dual speakers

Reasons to avoid: Only 40W, premium price

The Fusion StereoActive more than justifies its premium price tag – with our esteemed sister publication Yachting World describing this unit in its recent review as “seriously robust” and “a comparatively large, yet user-friendly speaker that packs a proper audible punch”.

Key features include dual 2.5in 40W directional speakers, IPx7 waterproofing and an AM/FM tuner.

4. Ultimate Ears Megaboom 2

Specifications: Rechargeable via USB, Battery life (max) 15 h, 90Db sound output

Reasons to buy: Robust, Waterproof, fills the room/cabin or air space easily.

Reasons to avoid: premium price, superceded by a newer model (which isn’t as good in my opinion)

This Ultimate Ears Megaboom weighs in at a hench 878grams, or 1.9lbs in retro old School weights.

At 23cm high and 8.5cm diameter it’s not a small thing to slip in your bag. But as a result of this weight and size, you do get some punchy sounds.

It has 360 sound so it doesn’t matter where you stand, you’re getting bathed in lovely tunes.

Pontoon Parties are so much more fun with a little bit of music, especially if the speaker is floating in the luggage cart that’s filled with cold water and beers. This speaker is waterproof and it floats.

The grippy feeling fabric cover dries out quickly after a dunking. I’d recommend giving a rinse with fresh water if it’s been covered in salt water spray though.

What to look for in the best marine speakers

  • IPX3 Protected from spray when tilted up to 60° from vertical.

  • IPX6 Protected against spray from strong water jets.
  • IPX7 Protected against immersion at a depth between 15cm to 1 metre for 30 minutes.

What are the best marine speakers?

But for a full breakdown, check out our best marine speakers article .

How Do I know what size marine speakers I currently have?

How do i know if i can fit bigger marine speakers, if you install bigger speakers, do you still need a subwoofer, how do the leds work in marine speakers, how do you wire the leds in marine speakers.

If the speakers have single color LEDs, they just need a power wire and a ground wire. You can use speaker wire as the wire to do this, or you can use regular, 20 AWG primary wire. You can use the REM wire on the amplifier as the 12v power source from your head unit to power the LEDs if you want the LEDs to light up when you turn your stereo on. However, this means that the LEDs will always be on when the stere is on. If you want the ability to turn the LEDs on and off regardless of whether the stereo is on or not, you then need to wire them to a switch.

If you have RGB LEDs, you can wire your speakers to the color of your choosing by grounding certain color wires. For example, if you have 12V power to the LEDs and you ground the red wire, the speakers will light up red. If you ground the blue wire, they will light up blue. If you ground the green wire, they will light up green. If you ground red, blue, and green, they will light up white. You can also mix and match wires to light up other colors, like red and blue to make purple, but you get the point. If you want the ability to easily and quickly change the color of your speakers or if you want your speakers to constantly change colors by fading or flashing, you can add an RGB LED controller. With an RGB LED controller, you can set the LEDs to virtually any color you want and you can select between a bunch of different modes for a full on disco party if you want. Many RGB LED controllers have Bluetooth built in and can be controlled via an app on your phone. The easiest way to wire RGB LEDs is with RGB speaker wire. Instead of standard, positive and negative speaker wire, this speaker wire is jacketed cable with 2 larger conductors for your speaker wire and 4 smaller wires for the RGB LEDs, a black wire for power, and then red, blue, and green wires to connect and ground.

Do You Need an Amplifier for Your Marine Speakers?

6.5" marine speakers, 8" marine speakers, wake tower speakers, 6x9 marine speakers, 4" marine speakers, 5" marine speakers, 6" marine speakers, 9"+ marine speakers, speaker brand breakdown, what are marine tower speakers, how much power can my marine speakers handle, if your speakers can handle 100 watts rms, do i need a 100 watt rms per channel amplifier.

Think of it like a car or truck. If my car has 450 horspower and your car has 600 horsepower. If we are both going to the store to get groceries, neither of us are likely using even close to the amount of horsepower that either vehicle has. We are going down city streets at 45-50 mph. We aren't racing. Having 450 horsepower or 600 horspower doesn't matter.

Now, the difference between a head unit power and an amplifier is the difference between a 1100cc stock engine (radio) in a VW Beetle and a 450 hp V8 (amplifier).

The Brains Behind the Operation

DPS Core Technology was created by legendary record producer and engineer, Tony Bongiovi, to ensure studio quality audio, no matter the surrounding circumstances. Bongiovi’s patented algorithm automatically adjusts and remasters music in real time, without having to manually change any audio levels. Even with the engines running, the wind blowing, and the waves crashing, you’ll still be able to hear your music with absolute clarity.

Our ears pay more attention to sounds we’re sensitive to. DPS Core Technology optimizes the audio signal so that the most important sounds stay at a consistent volume without losing impact or letting in unwanted outside noise. This means there isn’t any audible hiss or interference from your system when the volume is low and no distortion or harsh artifacts when you crank it up.

The Marine Stereo and Boat Audio Experts

Why should you use marine stereo gear.

Some boating enthusiasts use car audio equipment in their boats to get the sound they want when they are on the water. It seems to make sense because car stereos are cheap, easy to find and most boats have a 12-volt electrical system, just like an automobile. However, car audio gear is designed to be installed in an enclosed vehicle where it will be safe from rain, splashing, humidity and salt air. There are some important drawbacks to using it on your boat that you should know about.

Typical life expectancy for a car stereo that is is exposed to a marine environment on a boat is about 1 year. You might get more life than that, but you might also get less. Corrosion is the main problem since the copper in the circuit boards is very vulnerable. Even if the stereo doesn’t get wet, there is the moisture and sometimes salt in the air to contend with.

Better Than Car Audio

By contrast, a marine stereo will have circuit boards that are dipped in a liquid plastic or resin. The liquid plastic dries to form a thin, transparent, protective covering over the entire board, sealing all of the copper from exposure to the air. After this process, manufacturers will examine the boards under an ultraviolet light. The plastic is UV reactive so it will glow under the ultraviolet light which makes it easy to see any flaws in the coating which can be corrected. This manufacturing process adds years of life to a boat stereo that a car stereo will never survive.

Some marine stereo head units are completely sealed and waterproof. They can be splashed and rained on with no ill effects. These units use rubber gaskets to seal the access doors and the chassis is made of stainless steel, or heavy-duty ABS plastic rather than galvanized steel.

Longer Life For Speakers

Many people don’t realize that car speakers, and most any other speakers that are not designed for the outdoors, are made with paper cones. Paper sounds cheap and flimsey, but the paper used in speaker cones is actually more like a thin cardboard material. Manufacturers don’t use paper because they are cutting corners to save money. Some of the most expensive speakers you can buy are made with paper because it is an excellent material for sound reproduction. A lot of time and effort goes into engineering the paper to the perfect specifications for optimal sound quality.

That having been said, it doesn’t take much of an imagination to picture in your mind what happens to a paper speaker cone when it is exposed to water. Typical car stereo speakers may not last an afternoon on a boat let alone a year or more. Marine speakers use waterproof materials like mylar or polypropylene instead of paper. These materials closely approximate the resonance properties of paper with the added benefit of being waterproof. So, you get excellent sound quality and durability too. As you might expect, boat speakers are usually a little more expensive than car speakers, but the benefits greatly outweigh the cost.

Marine speakers are waterproof speakers which means they are impervious to rain, splashing and even hosing down according to standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials . However, they are not typically designed to be submerged. Submersion requires resistance to water pressure that isn’t a factor in the manufacturing process. While most boat speakers can withstand a quick dip in the water, it would be very difficult to find a manufacturer that says it’s not a problem to submerge their speakers. Besides that, they sound terrible underwater!

Loudhailer from Standard Horizon

I love my loudhailer. The booming PA function lends my voice an air of authority. At the very least, it lets me communicate with nearby boaters while standing off. But marine loudhailers are more than bullhorns. They enhance communication and boating safety in a number of ways.

Stand-Alone Hailers

Before we discuss functionality, let’s talk about the 12-volt DC-powered systems themselves. Marine loudhailers come in two versions. One is the stand-alone unit such as the Furuno LH5000 ($995; hodgesmarine.com ) or the Standard Horizon VLH-3000A ($349.99; westmarine.com ). Both hailers offer 30 watts of power and provide a variety of functions.

Integrated Hailers

In years past, stand-alone loudhailers were the most popular choice, but in recent times, marine loudhailers built into fixed-mounted VHF radios have taken over in the popularity contest. VHF models with integrated hailers include models such as the Icom IC-M605 ($849.95; defender.com ) and the Standard Horizon GX2400 ($374.95; thegpsstore.com ). The built-in hailers in each of these models also offer 30 watts of power, and like the stand-alone hailer, they perform a number of functions.

Loud Speakers

A loudhailer is useless without a loud speaker. This hornlike device is a separate purchase that must be installed and connected to the loudhailer unit. I have mounted the 30-watt Standard Horizon 5-inch-round loudhailer/foghorn speaker ($39.99; westmarine.com ), facing forward on the hardtop. On a larger boat, you might opt for the 7-inch-wide, 40-watt Shakespeare loudhailer horn ($139.99; westmarine.com ).

Both of these loud speakers feature UV-resistant, high-impact white plastic construction, as well as adjustable brackets for various mounting angles. A built-in extension wire usually provides sufficient length to reach the loudhailer units at the helm and connects via a wire splice, RCA plug, or other connector.

Switching the loudhailer to the public-address function allows you to speak with other boaters or hands at the fuel dock at ranges where it’s too far to shout and be heard over the noise of wind and waves. Just push the mic button to talk. You can even use it to communicate from an enclosed helm with a crewmember manning the anchor at the bow. The volume is adjustable to suit the distance. A listen-back feature amplifies the voices of crew and others responding to you, allowing you to better hear them through the speaker on the loudhailer unit at the helm, facilitating two-way communication.

Automated Foghorns

Whenever fog rolls in, I immediately switch the loudhailer to automated foghorn mode, which sounds a warning to any approaching vessels, relieving the skipper of the task of performing this safety function manually. There is often more than one mode of the foghorn. With my Standard Horizon VHF hailer, for example, you can select from:

  • Underway — a 5-second blast every 2 minutes
  • Stop — two 5-second blasts every 2 minutes
  • Sail — a 5-second blast and two short blasts every 2 minutes
  • Tow —a 5-second blast and three short blasts every 2 minutes
  • Aground — an 11-second ring every minute
  • Anchor — a 5-second ring every minute

The listen-back function can prove helpful in foggy conditions, allowing you to better hear the sounds of a nearby vessel, such as the rumble of the engine or water splashing off a boat underway.

Horn and Sirens

Loudhailers can also serve as sound-producing devices to satisfy Coast Guard requirements. In horn mode, for instance, my hailer will blast a horn sound from the loud speaker at the press of the mic button. Loudness can be adjusted by the volume control on the hailer. I can also set my hailer to produce a siren sound, which invariably grabs the attention of all nearby boaters.

National Security Advisor Announced as United States Merchant Marine Academy Commencement Speaker

KINGS POINT, NY —   Today, the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) announced that National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will deliver the 88 th  commencement address on Saturday, June 22.

“The United States Merchant Marine Academy is pleased to welcome National Security Advisor Sullivan as our commencement speaker,” said USMMA Superintendent Vice Admiral Joanna Nunan. “Mr. Sullivan’s address to the graduating class comes at a time when the U.S. Merchant Marine plays an exceptionally critical role in our national security, making his presence particularly meaningful.”

Jake Sullivan is the 28th Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. In the Obama-Biden Administration, he served as Deputy Assistant to the President and National Security Advisor to then-Vice President Biden, Director of the Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State, and Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. During his time in government, Sullivan was a lead negotiator in the initial talks that paved the way for the Iran nuclear deal and played a key role in the U.S.-brokered negotiations that led to a ceasefire in Gaza in 2012. He also helped shape the Asia-Pacific rebalance strategy at both the State Department and the White House.

In the years following his service in the Obama-Biden administration, Sullivan was a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, where he helped conceive and design a bipartisan task force project on a foreign policy for the middle class. He also held teaching posts at Yale Law School, Dartmouth College, and the University of New Hampshire. He co-founded and co-chaired the advisory board for National Security Action, a nonprofit national security advocacy organization, and served on the advisory boards of a number of organizations involved in foreign policy and national security. Sullivan was a senior policy advisor on Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.

He holds a BA in political science and international studies from Yale College; a Masters of Philosophy in International Relations from Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar; and a JD from Yale Law School. He clerked for Judge Stephen Breyer of the Supreme Court of the United States and Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He grew up as the second of five children in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is a proud product of the Minneapolis public schools. He and his wife Maggie Goodlander have a permanent home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, N.Y, educates and graduates licensed merchant mariners and leaders of exemplary character who will serve America’s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war. The U.S. Merchant Marine is administered by the Maritime Administration under the auspices of the Department of Transportation.

Howard university cancels graduation mid-ceremony after furious family members pound on doors, smash window.

A graduation ceremony for nursing students at Howard University ended abruptly and in chaos after angry family members chanted “Let us in!” and pounded on the doors and smashed a window after being locked out when the auditorium hit capacity.

Loved ones of students in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences packed into the Cramton Auditorium in Washington, DC, on Thursday, but not all relatives made it inside the building before the ceremony was abruptly canceled during the keynote address.

Chaotic video footage shows dozens of people standing outside the auditorium chanting, “Let us in! Let us in!” as the ceremony began.

Pictures showed a glass door had been shattered during the commotion as people banged on the doors and tried to push past security to go inside.

video

“While they were doing the keynote speaker, there was, like, loud banging, even before that, for like 10 minutes straight,” graduate Bria Flowers told NBC Washington. “Just like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.”

School officials told students and their families mid-ceremony that the fire department had come to shut things down.

“Because of the size of the room and because our relatives sometimes do not know how to act, the fire department is now here to shut us down,” Dr. Gina S. Brown, dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, said to a roaring response of boos.

However, DC Fire and EMS denied shutting down the graduation.

“D.C. Fire and EMS did not shut down tonight’s event,” the department said. “At 6:42 p.m., we responded to the Cramton Auditorium for a medical local at the request of campus police. The patient was evaluated and refused transport, and D.C. Fire and EMS departed.”

Students and their families were left shocked and upset by how quickly things got out of hand.

“I’m confused why it got so crazy, how it got so quick, so bad so fast,” graduate Kiana Hamilton said.

ceremony

Fellow graduate Halle Ragoonanan said the incident was especially heartbreaking for her and her family because she didn’t get to walk during her high school graduation in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I didn’t even get to walk,” she said. “I didn’t get to walk. I graduated magna cum laude and I didn’t even get to walk. I’m the Class of 2020. I didn’t get to walk for my high school graduation and I didn’t get to walk for my college graduation.”

Other graduates lamented over how much money their families had spent to be there for their special day just for it to be canceled.

This mother's day weekend Howard University shutdown graduation and blamed the families instead of taking accountability for poor planning. What did you expect when you have the largest graduating class and no headcount limit per graduate. Let them walk at commencement! pic.twitter.com/PipTkmr7D1 — Dee (@darling_daphney) May 10, 2024

“All the money we spent,” an unnamed student told the station. “My father and grandmother came down from North Carolina.”

Howard said security removed someone from the building before the ceremony who returned and smashed the glass door outside the auditorium.

One student was found with cuts on their hands from the broken glass.

“This incident led to a disturbance among guests outside of the facility, resulting in a disruption of the program,” Howard’s statement said. “Guests in attendance were immediately dispersed following this incident.”

Some of the affected students were able to walk in the university’s main commencement ceremony on Saturday, while individual awards were given out to students on Friday.

Failure to oust Speaker 'MAGA Mike' Johnson shows strength and weakness of his alliance with Trump

yacht speakers

Election 2024 Trump Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., speaks as Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump listens during a news conference, Friday, April 12, 2024, at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla. (AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee) (Wilfredo Lee/AP)

WASHINGTON — (AP) — It was Donald Trump who bestowed the "MAGA Mike Johnson" nickname on the House speaker the day he won the gavel.

It is the Republican speaker himself who is proving whether it sticks .

Johnson survived an ouster vote this week by one of Trump's biggest supporters in Congress, far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene , his job secured only after House Democrats turned out in force to put an end to the GOP chaos, for now.

But the oversized role Trump played in propping up Johnson cannot be understated — or relied upon to save the speaker again.

In fact, the indicted former president who has been known to flip his friends into foes warned that while Republicans shouldn’t be voting to remove Johnson, “At some point, we may very well be, but this is not the time.”

The outcome puts on display the fragility of the unexpected but strategically beneficial alliance that Trump and Johnson have formed ahead of the November election when both hope to be returned to power — the Republican president in the White House and the loyal foot soldier in Congress.

“Seems like they’re on the same page, and I think that’s great,” said lawyer Cleta Mitchell, who was a key figure in Trump's efforts to challenge the 2020 election.

Johnson has worked diligently to align himself with the former president, the conservative Christian setting aside his once critical views of the presidential contender to present himself as a chief implementer of the Trump Republican Party’s Make America Great Again agenda on Capitol Hill.

Barely six months on the job, since Johnson replaced the ousted then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy , the new leader has dashed multiple times to Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, securing crucial support, including at a glitzy Republican National Committee gala this past weekend.

When Trump invited Johnson to the stage to say a few words, the speaker praised the former president as the "strongman" the country needs in the White House. Trump and Johnson are cordial, according to a person with knowledge of their relationship, and granted anonymity to discuss it.

"He's doing a great job," Trump said alongside Johnson after another visit last month, ahead of the House vote to approve a national security package with Ukraine funding that Greene warned would lead to a vote on Johnson's ouster.

In return for his seal of approval, Trump is increasingly able to rely on the speaker’s high-profile standing to legitimize his relentless attacks on the U.S. election process, the judicial system and the multiple criminal cases against him, including the federal indictment for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

“All these cases need to be dropped,” says Johnson, a constitutional lawyer, who as the House speaker is second in the line of presidential succession. “President Trump has done nothing wrong. ... It has to stop.”

Trump is already pre-emptively contesting the 2024 election as potentially rigged before the first ballots are cast, and Johnson, who helped lead legal challenges to Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, is in a powerful position to again question the legitimacy of the outcome.

Asked this week if he believed the 2020 election was legitimate and if he would stand by the new state-certified results this fall, Johnson shook his head in frustration, and demurred. “What we're talking about today is the 2024 election, nobody can go back and relitigate what happened in 2020,” he said.

The joint venture between Trump and Johnson was in clear focus Wednesday ahead of the House action when the speaker, flanked on the Capitol steps by a who’s who of the former president’s advisers, announced new legislation that would require proof of citizenship before Americans are eligible to vote.

Johnson had promised Trump a voting-citizenship bill during one of the Mar-a-Lago visits , and the unveiling of it alongside Mitchell, Stephen Miller, the architect of Trump's hardline immigration policies, and others showed just how embedded the former president's Make America Great Again movement has become in the House speaker's agenda.

Election experts said there is scant evidence that non-citizens vote in U.S. elections, and past reviews including one pursued by the Trump administration have not produced significant cases of wrongdoing.

Nevertheless, Johnson and the others argued without proof that immigrants are being brought into the U.S. to illegally vote. The legislation can be seen as groundwork for the challenges Trump may pose in the aftermath of the November election.

“If this bill does not become law, then Joe Biden and Democrats will have engineered one of the greatest interferences in any democratic nation in the history of the world,” Miller said outside the Capitol.

Still, the legislative push did not placate Greene, who hours later tried and failed to remove the speaker from office.

Colleagues booed in protest. An overwhelming majority, 359-43, kept Johnson in his job, for now.

“I’m proud of what I did today,” Greene said afterward on the Capitol steps.

It’s the second time in a matter of months that Republicans have worked to oust their own speaker, an unheard of level of party upheaval with a move rarely seen in U.S. history.

Without Democratic help, Johnson would have certainly faced a more dismal outcome. All told, 196 and 163 Democrats voted to table Greene's motion. But 11 Republicans voted to proceed with the effort, more than it took to remove McCarthy last fall, a first in U.S. history.

Democrats have also made clear their help was for this moment alone, and not a promise of an enduring partnership for Johnson’s survival.

"Our decision to stop Marjorie Taylor Greene from plunging the country into further chaos is rooted in our commitment to solve problems," said Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries , D-N.Y., after the vote.

“The only thing we ask of our House Republican colleagues is for traditional Republicans to further isolate the extreme MAGA Republican wing of the GOP,” said Jeffries, who is in line to become speaker if Democrats win control of the House in the fall. “We need more common sense and less chaos.”

Asked about a future motion to vacate the speaker, Jeffries said, “Haven’t given it a thought.”

By relying on Democratic backing, Johnson risks inciting more criticism that he is insufficiently loyal to the party.

And the threat still lingers — any single lawmaker can call up the motion to vacate the speaker.
