The 74-metre Lürssen superyacht Global for sale

74m Lürssen superyacht Global joins market

The 74-metre Lürssen superyacht Global has joined the market with Rob Newton of IYC.

Designed by Monaco-based Espen Øino with interior by UK-based Reymond Langton Design , the steel and aluminium yacht was delivered in Germany in 2007 by Lürssen, who was also responsible for the naval architecture. The pedigree vessel was "meticulously refitted in 2024".

Global's exterior is described by the broker as "sophisticated and refined, featuring clean lines, graceful curves, and a striking profile that commands admiration".

The six-deck superyacht has a generous 12.6-metre beam and spacious accommodation for a party of 12, including an on-deck full-beam master suite with Jacuzzi bath and his-and-hers private balconies. The VIP double suite also boasts a Jacuzzi bath. Three double guest cabins can easily convert to twins as and when required, while the sixth cabin is a dedicated children's twin. Crew quarters allow for a staff of 22.

An enticing beach club with sauna and massage room, a nightclub, cinema plus a helicopter deck are standout features of the substantial vessel. Her 18-seater dining table – with a "wine lounge" containing ten wine coolers adjacent – allows for formal entertaining. A large office, a gym and a second saloon are located above.

The 1,906GT yacht for sale is powered by twin Caterpillar engines giving her a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots and cruising speed of 14 knots.

Global is asking €79,000,000.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

global yachts

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

global yachts

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

global yachts

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

global yachts

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

global yachts

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

global yachts

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The World Meteorological Organization's State of the Global Climate report confirms 2023 broke every single climate indicator

There's an ominous new significance to the phrase 'off the charts', according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), with 2023 breaking every single climate indicator.

An animation depicting average annual temperatures from 1850 to 2023, blue lines move to red to show increase in temperature.

The UN agency's annual State of the Global Climate report confirmed it wasn't just the hottest year on record, ocean heat reached its highest level since records began, global mean sea level also reached a record high and Antarctic sea ice reached a record low.

The impacts of extreme weather and climate events up-ended life for millions of people across the world and inflicted billions of dollars in economic losses, according to the WMO.

"Extreme climate conditions exacerbated humanitarian crises, with millions experiencing acute food insecurity and hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes," WMO Secretary General Professor Celeste Saulo said.

"Heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and intense tropical cyclones wreaked havoc on every continent and caused huge socio-economic losses."

An image from above looking down at a boy carrying a blue bucket, walking across cracked dry land.

Ocean heat reached its highest level in the 65 years it's been recorded, with the WMO's analysis showing a strong increase in the past two decades.

The report found on an average day in 2023, nearly one third of the global ocean was gripped by a marine heatwave, harming vital ecosystems and food systems.

Towards the end of 2023, over 90 per cent of the ocean had experienced heatwave conditions at some point during the year.

A colour coded map of the world's oceans, showing vast swathes of ocean experienced marine heatwaves in 2023.

That heating is expected to continue, with the report stating it could be 'irreversible on scales of hundreds to thousands of years'.

Oceans rising

Increased temperatures are not just impacting the warmth of the ocean, there are other flow on effects, including sea level rise.

"The ocean, which covers around 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface, absorbs heat and CO2, which can act to slow the rate of warming in the atmosphere," the report explained.

"However, the heat absorbed by the ocean leads to ocean warming which, together with the melting of ice on land, raises sea levels.

"The ocean also absorbs CO2 leading to ocean acidification."

The report found, global mean sea level reached a record high, with the rate of sea level rise in the past 10 years more than doubling since the first decade of the satellite record (1993–2002).

A graph showing sea level rise over the last 65 years, accelerating rapidly.

Ice retreats

Glaciers in North America and the European Alps suffered massive losses after experiencing an extreme melt season, according to the WMO.

In Switzerland, glaciers lost around 10 per cent of their remaining volume in the last two years.

It also found the global set of reference glaciers for the hydrological year 2022-2023 experienced the largest loss of ice on record from 1950-2023.

Blue ice from a nearby glacier floats in a bay, a tall snowy mountain peak can be seen in the distance.

Sea ice saw similar retreats, with Arctic sea ice extent well below normal and Antarctic sea ice at an absolute record low.

"(Antarctic) Ice extent was at a record low for the time of year from June till early November, and the annual maximum in September was around 1 million km2 below the previous record low maximum," the report said.

Greenhouse gases

Concentrations of the three main greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide all reached record high observed levels.

"The long-term increase in global temperature is due to increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere," the report stated.

A graph showing global mean temperatures have increased rapidly since 1850, accelerating last year.

The shift from La Niña to El Niño explains some of the rise of temperatures in 2023, but other factors, which are still being investigated, may also have contributed to the exceptional warming.

Glimmers of hope

Despite the dire state of the climate, the WMO said there was a glimmer of hope, with the rapid expansion of renewable energy generation leading efforts to decarbonise.

It found added renewable capacity increased by 50 per cent compared to 2022, the highest rate observed in the past two decades.

WMO Secretary General Professor Celeste Saulo said she hoped the report will help to scale up the urgency and ambition of climate action and called for more resources for climate data and monitoring.

A woman wearing dark clothing, blonde hair and red lipstick sits at a wooden desk in front of a computer, UN blue flag behind.

"Climate action is currently being hampered by a lack of capacity to deliver and use climate services to inform national mitigation and adaptation plans, especially in developing countries," she said.

"We need to increase support for National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to be able to provide information services to ensure the next generation of Nationally Determined Contributions are based on science."

Scientists detail research to assess the viability and risks of marine cloud brightening

As the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere continue to increase and climate change impacts become more costly, the scientific community is redoubling efforts to investigate the potential risks and benefits of artificially shading Earth's surface to slow global warming.

Marine cloud brightening (MCB) is one of two primary solar radiation modification methods being proposed to offset the worst effects of global warming while decarbonization advances. MCB proposals involve the injection of salt spray into shallow marine clouds to brighten them, increasing their reflection of sunlight and reducing the amount of heat absorbed by the water below.

A group of 31 leading atmospheric scientists are now offering a consensus physical science research roadmap to build the knowledge base needed to evaluate the viability of MCB approaches. Their roadmap is described in a new paper published in the journal Science Advances .

"Interest in MCB is growing, but policymakers currently don't have the information they need to reach decisions about if and when MCB should be deployed," said lead author Graham Feingold, a researcher with NOAA's Chemical Sciences Laboratory.

"The question is whether we can design a MCB research program using our current modeling and observational tools to establish the feasibility of this approach on a global scale, and if not, what needs to be done to position ourselves to do so."

Artificially shading the planet would do nothing to reduce the driver of climate change, human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, said co-author Lynn Russell, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.

"The recent acceleration of impacts from global warming means that we need to consider non-ideal backup plans just to buy us enough time to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and existing burdens," Russell said. "A research plan is essential before we can consider adopting MCB, and we need to simultaneously address the physical science questions and the human dimensions."

Current MCB proposals rely on saltwater spray, which would mimic plumes of sulfur-rich emissions from ship stacks or volcanoes, to increase the aerosol concentration in the lower marine atmosphere. Ideally, droplets in the saltwater spray evaporate to produce fine particles that are carried up to the cloud layer by turbulent and convective air motions.

If MCB techniques could consistently influence clouds to reflect more sunlight back to space than similar clouds with a lower droplet concentration, then it has the potential to be an effective solar radiation modification technique, at least at the local scale, scientists say. This in turn could produce some cooling at a local scale.

Scientists detail research to assess the viability and risks of marine cloud brightening

The study proposes a substantial and targeted program of MCB research that includes laboratory studies, field experiments, and cloud modeling. As a result, new laboratory facilities are needed to address gaps in understanding aerosol and cloud microphysical processes, as few existing labs are capable of addressing these processes.

Long-running field experiments using a point source at an ocean-based location where the conditions are favorable, along with new observations and new modeling are needed to test salt-particle spraying technology. This would allow scientists to determine the degree to which sea spray emitted near the surface would reach the cloud base in a variety of conditions.

Researchers can take advantage of existing analogs to cloud-seeding experiments, such as natural volcanic emissions, biomass burning, exhaust plumes from individual ships or designated shipping lanes, urban point sources, and urban plumes.

In practical terms, researchers need to develop sufficient confidence that appropriately sized particles can be generated and delivered to the clouds, and once there, act to form cloud droplets that efficiently scatter sunlight. They would need to show that clouds could be brightened consistently and over a large enough area to meaningfully cool the ocean below—and that trying to manipulate clouds would not cause clouds to thin, or droplets to rain out, which might allow for increased heating.

Scientists would further need to show that the brightening of the clouds would be measurable to demonstrate it would work as intended at globally relevant scales, or in sensitive regional ecosystems, such as coral reefs.

Clouds are not all created equally—some are more susceptible to aerosol injections than others. A cloud that is already bright, with a high drop concentration, is much more difficult to brighten than a wispy cloud with a low drop concentration. How a cloud responds to attempted manipulation is subtly dependent on the weather and background aerosol conditions.

Complicating matters, the optimal particle size and amount is likely dependent on cloud properties that can change as they drift through the air. This explains the high variability in ship-track occurrence, Feingold said.

"We would have to get the right-sized particles into receptive clouds at the right times of day and seasons, and over large enough areas to shade large areas of ocean," said Feingold. "It's a major challenge."

"To the extent that we can identify optimal brightening conditions, a targeted approach to MCB, rather than routine spraying under all conditions, might have a higher probability of success," Feingold said. "It might also reduce the risk of regional circulation responses that change temperature and rainfall in ways that benefit some and leave others vulnerable."

More generally, Feingold re-emphasizes that MCB would not replace decarbonization and would not alleviate ocean acidification. "To reduce global temperatures, our highest priority should be to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. MCB might help to alleviate the worst impacts of climate change ."

Global ocean heat has hit a new record every single day for the last year

T he world’s oceans have now experienced an entire year of  unprecedented heat , with a new temperature record broken every day, new data shows.

Global ocean surface temperatures started breaking daily records in mid-March last year, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, fueling concerns for marine life and extreme weather across the planet.

“The amplitude by which previous sea surface temperature records were beaten in 2023, and now again in 2024, is remarkable,” said Joel Hirschi, associate head of marine systems modeling at the National Oceanography Centre in the UK.

Global average ocean temperatures in 2023 were 0.25 degrees Celsius warmer than the previous year, said Gregory C. Johnson, a NOAA oceanographer. That rise is “is equivalent to about two decades’ worth of warming in a single year,” he told CNN. “So it is quite large, quite significant, and a bit surprising.”

Scientists have said ocean heat is being supercharged by  human-caused global warming , boosted by El Niño , a natural climate pattern marked by higher-than-average ocean temperatures.

The main consequences are on marine life and global weather. Global ocean warmth can add more power to hurricanes and other extreme weather events, including scorching heat waves and intense rainfall.

High ocean temperatures are already proving catastrophic for coral. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its seventh mass bleaching event, authorities announced in March following aerial surveys.

Bleaching occurs when heat-stressed corals release the algae that live in their tissue and provide their food source. If ocean temperatures remain too high for too long, the coral can starve and die.

Data from NOAA’s Coral Reef Watch tool shows that the problem goes well beyond Australia, and that the world could face a fourth global mass coral bleaching event in the next few months.

Ocean heat sets the stage for more ferocious hurricanes. “The warmer the ocean, the more energy to fuel storms is available,” said Karina von Schuckmann, an oceanographer at Mercator Ocean International in France.

Temperatures have been unprecedented in the North Atlantic , an area of ocean key to hurricane formation, surprising some scientists, who are still trying to unpick the exact causes .

“At times, the records (in the North Atlantic) have been broken by margins that are virtually statistically impossible,” Brian McNoldy, a senior research associate at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School told CNN.

If very high ocean temperatures continue into the second half of 2024 and a La Niña event develops — El Niño’s counterpart that tends to amplify Atlantic hurricane season — “this would increase the risk of a very active hurricane season,” Hirschi said.

About 90% of the world’s excess heat produced by burning planet-heating fossil fuels is stored in the oceans. “Measuring ocean warming allows us to track the status and evolution of planetary warming,” Schuckmann told CNN. “The ocean is the sentinel for global warming.”

El Niño is weakening and predicted to dissipate over the next few months, which could level off the record ocean temperatures, especially if the cooling effects of La Niña replace it.

“In the past, surface temperature values have decreased after the passage of El Niño,” Schuckmann said. But, she added, it’s currently impossible to predict when ocean heat will drop below record levels.

While natural climate variability will cause ocean temperatures to fluctuate, over the long term, NOAA’s Johnson said, we should expect them to “continue to break records as long as greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere continue to rise.”

CNN’s Derek Van Dam contributed to this report.
