How To Get Qualified With Sailing Courses – RYA, ASA, IYT

Getting out on the water for the first time can be a daunting task, and navigating through the range of sailing courses and qualifications can be overwhelming. In this blog, we are going to explain the different yachting schemes available around the world (ASA, RYA etc), the qualifications they can offer, and discover the best path for you.

This applies to anyone wanting to sail or motor any yacht under 500 tonnes, most yachts are only around 10 tonnes!

Do I Need Sailing Qualifications/Licences?

If you keep your boat in the UK, only sail in the UK, and your boat is under 24m long, then no, technically you don’t.  However, if you want to charter a boat, sail anywhere else in the world, or want to keep your insurance renewals low then a qualification or two is essential!

Finally, it’s not just about the licence, do you really want to take out your pride and joy, that probably cost 10’s if not 100’s of thousands, and try your luck? There is a lot of training and knowledge involved in becoming a skipper and working towards a qualification is the best approach to gaining the skills and knowledge.

An image showing a yacht heading into bad weather. The title is 'this skipper should have gone to Ardent Training'.

How To Get Qualified

We have decided it is a good idea to get some qualifications, now how do we achieve them?  Before picking a school or instructor, you first have to look at which association they belong to. There are many to choose from as most wealthy countries have their own associations with their own qualification schemes. Once an association has been picked we can start looking at the appropriate qualifications, and finally, the schools that teach those qualifications.

RYA vs IYT vs ASA

Every qualification has to have an authorising body or association.  You would be forgiven for thinking that just picking the most local yachting or sailing association is the way to go, but sailing is an international sport and hobby. Yachts can take us all around the world and we wouldn’t want to limit our future selves by obtaining the wrong certificate. The three biggest associations are Royal Yachting Association (RYA), International Yacht Training (IYT) and American Sailing Association (ASA) so let’s start by looking at those.

Royal Yachting Association

The RYA is the oldest and most internationally recognised governing body of dinghy, yacht, and motor cruising in the world. They were the first association to standardise training in the yachting industry and they have been going strong for nearly 150 years.

The RYA is equally focused on recreational boating as it is on professional boating which makes their qualifications particularly versatile.

Once you gain the RYA Day Skipper certificate you can easily convert it into either an ICC (international certificate of competence) which is free to do for RYA members or even get it commercially endorsed as a professional qualification without having to repeat any exams.  The same can be said for the subsequent RYA Yachtmaster qualifications. This versatility and global reputation make the RYA qualifications a difficult route to beat.

We provide RYA Theory courses online at Ardent Training.

International Yacht Training

IYT is a relative newcomer and was founded in 1998. Despite being a relatively new organisation, it has made quite an impact and shaken up the yachting industry for the better. International Yacht Training forced the RYA to take a more international approach to their training and the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) was actually created by International Yacht Training. However, the RYA rapidly got on board with this and now offers the ICC to holders of its own qualifications without any further or retesting required. Put simply, you can easily convert RYA qualifications to IYT qualifications, but cannot convert IYT to RYA.

You would expect there to be a strong rivalry between these two organisations but instead, they appear to work well together and have both worked to make the ICC the internationally recognised qualification it is today.

The IYT also have a good offering of professional qualifications, allowing their holders to work in the industry and arguably offer the best set of qualifications for those wishing to go on to working on superyachts. IYT are without a doubt a well-regarded association worldwide, but despite this, these newcomers are much less well known than the RYA and have far fewer training centres around the world, making their qualifications harder to obtain.

IYT offer alternatives to the RYA scheme. However, an RYA Day Skipper certificate automatically qualifies you for an IYT certificate as as well.

The ASA is the most prominent sailing association in America.  They are solely targeting recreational sailors and have a well thought out approach to this market.  Whilst they are less well known internationally, and they don’t offer the same options to progress into professional sailing, they do offer a good alternative to the ICC called the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC).  Officially, the IPC is the only recognised yachting ticket in the USA when it comes to chartering boats, however, in reality, the ICC will usually be accepted.

The ASA provide a decent training scheme, but can it compare to RYA sailing courses?

If you only want to sail in the USA, the ASA will probably do. However, for the most versatile qualifications, internationally recognised, for recreation and professional use, as well as the easiest to find training centres for, is, without doubt, the RYA.  I chose the RYA when I learnt to sail and it has never once held me back from all my adventures. On the other hand, I have met many sailors who gained other qualifications elsewhere (ASA, IYT, SA Sailing, Australian Sailing, etc…) who have had to retest at some point to get their RYA tickets.

The RYA wins hands down.

RYA Cruising Scheme – Day Skipper to Yachtmaster

Okay, so RYA it is, but which RYA course should you start with?

The RYA offers many courses from complete beginner courses to celestial navigation courses.  Where you start really depends on your prior experience and what you want to achieve. This diagram outlines the progression and entry points into the RYA Cruising Scheme:

A diagram displaying the steps involving RYA Start Motor Cruising, RYA Start Yachting, RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship, RYA Helmsman's Course, RYA Competent Crew, RYA Day Skipper Theory, RYA Day Skipper Motor, RYA Day Skipper Sail, RYA Yachtmaster Theory, RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Motor, RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Sail, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Motor, RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail, and RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory.

Up until Day Skipper, you can really jump in at any point depending on your ambition.  However, once you reach Day Skipper Practical, each course assumes you have a certain amount of prior experience and knowledge, usually exactly equivalent to the course that came before it. Watch out when trying to jump or skip courses from Day Skipper Theory and onwards as you will often get caught out by your fragmented knowledge and either downgraded or simply fail the course.

There are lots of courses to suit your needs and lots of different entry points depending on our experience. If it seems a bit overwhelming we can make this simpler if we ask the question: Why do you want to take a course?

If you just want to try out being on the water for the first time, go for Start Yachting, or Start Motor Cruising.

If you want to learn to be a useful crew, start at Essential Navigation and Seamanship.

If you want to learn to be a skipper, start with Day Skipper Theory.

If you are already an experienced yachtsman and want qualifications to back it up, start with the Fast Track to Yachtmaster.

Choosing An RYA Sailing School

Finally, we know what course we want to take, now we just need to find somewhere to take it! The RYA has over 2,500 recognised training centres around the world. That’s a lot to choose from! Luckily, we are here to help make the right choice for you.

RYA Theory – Online Vs Classroom

There has been a recent shift from classroom learning to online learning. We did a lot of research into this and found the benefits of online learning to be so great that we have fully switched over to this medium and embraced e-learning. We believe we can provide a much better quality theory course with the aid of technology and are proud to be producing some of the best-prepared students for their practical training. By removing the need for travel and the cost of premises and accommodation, we have found we can offer a tailored experience for each of our students at a far more reasonable cost.

We actually wrote a whole blog on Online Vs Classroom courses so if you want to find out more, I urge you to check it out: Can You Really Learn to Sail Online ? Or, if you are already sold on the idea of an online course, head on over to our website and give our Free Trial a go .

Ardent Training are the premium providers of RYA Day Skipper Theory courses online.

RYA Practical Centres

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a practical centre, first and foremost, where do you want to sail? Some people just want somewhere local, some want adventure, and some want sun. Think carefully about where you want to sail and make a holiday out of your practical course in the right location.

Once you have a location in mind, time to start searching. There will no doubt still be multiple options but remember, cheaper is not better! There isn’t a large profit margin on RYA courses, so if a training centre is cheap, they are probably cutting corners. The first corners to cut are instructor wages and vessel maintenance so getting a cheap course may just result in your hard-earned money getting wasted on inexperienced instructors and poorly maintained vessels. This is not worth the savings as it will severely impact your enjoyment and how much you can get out of the course.

Armed with that advice, we recommend using the RYA’s Find a Training Centre tool to help you find the best training centre for you: https://www.rya.org.uk/wheres-my-nearest

Once you have completed your RYA Theory courses, you will want to head out and take your RYA practical courses on a boat like this.

So, what have we learned?

  • You need qualifications to charter a boat.
  • Qualifications will lower your insurance premium.
  • Qualifications will help you learn, stay safe, and enjoy your time on the water.
  • Go with RYA qualifications for maximum versatility and recognition.
  • If you want to be a Skipper, you need the RYA Day Skipper certificate.
  • Take your theory courses online with Ardent Training.
  • Choose where you want to learn to sail (in the sun or somewhere close to home?)
  • Go quality over price to get more out of your training.

International skipper's licences: which one is the best?

International skipper's licences: which one is the best?

  • Comparison: international skipper's licences. Which one is the best?

International  skipper's licences  attract prestige and the prospect of a hassle-free charter. But which will you get the most out of? What are their downsides? And are they worth it? We will be comparing the 4 most recognized ones — RYA, ISSA, IYT and ASA, as well as taking a look at ICC and IPC certificates.

The good news and the bad news. The bad news is that there is no international certification recognized everywhere. The word international may give the impression that it applies to all countries, but in practice it only means more than one. The good news is that in many holiday destinations, charter companies will somehow rent you the boat on both international and national papers. Sometimes, though, it isn’t easy.

That's why it's important to check the validity of a country's certificate beforehand. When travelling on your own, you’ll have no choice but to Google it. But if you rent a boat through yachting.com, it will be completely hassle-free. We can help you with the certificate, or arrange it for you with the charter company.

Is an international certification worth it?

Now you're probably wondering what the advantage of international certification is. First of all, the quality and depth of the training. The programs are demanding (we won't lie), but when you complete them, it means you’ll actually know something. The courses also open doors to further your sailing education and to the global community. All four associations offer skipper's licences from inshore to ocean sailing. Today, we'll compare the basic ones that are the perfect starting point for new skippers.

Regatta racer team.

Royal Yachting Association (RYA)

The criteria of the British Royal Yachting Association ( RYA ) are so stringent that they hold the reputation of being the most prestigious certification. Even the most basic RYA Day Skipper qualifies a captain for recreational and commercial sailing. It is fair to add here, however, that the conditions of employment as a skipper are governed by the laws of each individual country. The course is only available from certified partners, such as yachting.com . Strict requirements from the RYA and a sophisticated system of online study materials ensure the same quality of teaching globally.

RYA Day Skipper

As a captain you will gain a basic understanding of navigation, meteorology and the rules of the sea. You can then skipper a sailing vessel up to 15 m in coastal waters up to 20 miles on a day passage . The higher level RYA Coastal Skipper certification is required for night sailing.

Recommended experience: At least 5 days and 4 night hours on a boat and 100 nm underway, which is roughly equivalent to the RYA Competent Crew beginners course.

Validity: Unlimited

Minimum age: 16 years

Where to go: UK, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, the Czech Republic and other locations

Course time: 6-day practical course + 4 days of theoretical instruction .

YACHTING.COM TIP: An interesting option for those who don’t wish to be a captain is the RYA Competent Crew course, which trains complete beginners and develops them into full-fledged crew members. It is common practice for them to mix with future Day Skippers on practical courses which benefits everyone. Skippers get to try captaining straight away and the crew get to experience different captains with different outlooks.

Racers yachtsmen at the regatta.

International Sailing School Association (ISSA)

The   ISSA is an association that brings together sailing schools all over the planet. Thanks to this, and the fact that, along with the RYA, it is one of the oldest maritime certifications, it has managed to negotiate acceptance of its certificates almost everywhere you can think of. Its teaching system is not as sophisticated as the RYA's, but its quality and depth is on a similar standing. As well as English, tuition is available in the language of the sailing school's home country.

Inshore Skipper

As a skipper you can operate a  boat up to 24 m in coastal waters up to 20 miles, both day and night. The course includes instruction and a radio exam (VHF/SRC), which is always a plus.

Recommended experience: Experience at least at ISSA Yacht Crew level, i.e. 3 days at sea

Where to go: UK, Ibiza, Cyprus, Montenegro, Poland, Russia and other locations

Course time: Approximately 10–14 days depending on the school. Practice and theory can be taught separately or on a practical course

Man working on a ship, main mast.

International Yacht Training (IYT)

The US-Canadian IYT was created as an alternative to the RYA and offers similar courses and credentials. However, it distinguishes between certificates for recreational sailing and for pro skippers and crew ( recreational and superyacht ). Teaching standards are high and courses meet ISO standards. However, again, it should be added that they may not be in accordance with the laws of the country you are sailing through.

International Bareboat Skipper

The certificate is comparable to the RYA Day Skipper and allows you to sail a sailboat up to 24 m up to 20 miles offshore , but again only in the daytime . To obtain the certificate you need a radio course (VHF/SRC).

Recommended experience: Knowledge to at least IYT International Crew Certificate level and a full 10 days and 200 nm.

Validity: 5 years, then renewal required.

Where to go: UK, France, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia and other locations

Course time: 10-day practical course (6 days with Crew Certificate) + self-study of theory online (access to material for 2 months includes radio).

Crew on stormy sea, ship tilted.

American Sailing Association (ASA)

The  US Coast Guard also vouches for the quality of ASA instructors and instruction. However, the length of the practical courses is almost half that of the others and the ASA lags behind in the number of online theory courses. ASA is most suitable for sailing in North America. For Europe you’ll need to upgrade to the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) . This is where ASA comes back into play. In fact, it is commonly accepted in popular European sailing destinations.

Bareboat Cruising

As a skipper, you can captain a  boat up to 15 m in coastal waters up to 20 miles in good weather. The course teaches night sailing and the use of the radio (VHF).

Recommended experience: Knowledge of at least ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing and ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising and at least 6 days at sea.

Where to go: Greece, Croatia, Canary Islands and other locations

Course time: Approximately 6 days depending on the school. Practice and theory can be taught separately or on a practical course.

A team of yachtsmen working together during a regatta.

How much do international licences cost

There is no easy answer to this question. The fact that the courses are held all over the world means that location is reflected in the price. The associations themselves do not publish prices and the schools certified by them only sometimes include in the price the additional costs of issuing the certificate, the presence of a foreign examiner or the fees associated with hiring a teaching boat, etc. Expect a price of approximately €1,500 to €2,500. However, even an approximate price is not a reliable means of comparison, if only because certificates have different levels, value and applicability in practice. Rather, it makes sense to decide on a specific certification according to your own expectations, then choose a location and only compare the prices of providers within that location.

Domestic vs. international certificates

National skipper's certificates are issued by local authorities, it is an official document just like a driver's licence, so there are no issues for charter boats. However, international certificates from the RYA, ISSA, IYT and ASA are not official documents . Rather, they are confirmation of your sailing competence. The advantage is that you don't have to wait a month for them to be issued: just complete the course and pass the exam. You'll get your certificate practically straight away and you'll be ready to set sail within a few days. However, charter companies, insurance companies and marinas may refuse them because of local legislation that simply can't deal with the certificates (however well-known and prestigious).

According to maritime custom, the law of territorial waters , i.e. the laws of the country in which you are sailing, takes precedence. For us sailors, this is nothing new. In Croatia , for example, you can't rent a boat without a radiotelephonist's licence. The captain or one of the crew must have it. In Italy , the law requires the skipper to have a licence issued by the country of their citizenship. In the Mediterranean, Greek charters are the strictest. These can sometimes require two captain's licences on board and they have the most trouble with international certificates. On the other hand, they do tend to be most willing to make exceptions based on the skipper's logbook and experience.

YACHTING.COM TIP: The fact that they are designed as practical and theoretical preparation for an accredited exam makes their offer clear.

A young captain in a cap and a navy shirt.

International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

The ICC certificate was an attempt by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to establish a single certificate and uniform maritime rules for all. It is a separate course with practical and theoretical parts. It ends with an examination and is valid for 5 years , after which you must renew it. You can get it from the associations mentioned above except for the ASA, which has its own version of the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) . However, even here you can't avoid a bit of detective work. For example, the RYA cannot grant the ICC to citizens of some countries.

Comparison of certificates by location obtained

What to take away from the article .

  • Unfortunately, there is no international certification that is accepted everywhere.
  • International certificates from the RYA , ISSA, IYT, ASA or ICC are not official documents issued by government bodies. They are certificates of completion of practical and theoretical instruction from a yachting association.
  • Whether a charter company will accept the certificates depends on its goodwill and local laws.
  • You do not need to have previous levels of association certificates to take the courses, just comparable knowledge and experience.

Choosing the right certification may not be such a big deal after all. The key is to be clear about where you want to sail and how serious you are about sailing.

Faq what to know about international skipper licences.

Yachting association education systems are of the highest possible standard. When you take a course, you really acquire the know-how. You also don't have to wait a month to get your licence and you’ll receive it practically as soon as you finish the course.

Best Sailing Organization: IYT vs RYA vs More

Best sailing organizations

Have you wanted to get an international sailing certification so you can sail around the world? Do you want to learn from the best and get the most hands-on sailing education possible?

Whether you’re just starting to learn how to sail or you’re a seasoned sailing veteran that wants to become officially certified, you’ll have to choose between one of several organizations to consider for getting your sailing certificate.

The most prominent sailing organizations worldwide that provide similar certifications proving your sailing competence include:

  • International Yacht Training (IYT)
  • Royal Yachting Association (RYA)
  • American Sailing Association (ASA)
  • United States Sailing Association (US Sailing)

Before you choose one sailing association over the other, you need to ask yourself what your goals are.

Do you want to sail in the Mediterranean as well as off the coast of Southern France or the UK? Or do you have a strong desire to explore the coasts of North America?

Between the sailing certifications offered by IYT, RYA, ASA, and US Sailing, you’ll be able to explore the world on your terms and you’ll certainly have the know-how to do it.

Whether you have your own sailboat or are chartering one, these certifications will keep you covered.

International Yacht Training

international yacht training

International Yacht Training ( IYT ) is one of the most prominent, well-known independent sailing and boating training organizations in the world.

They are one of the few organizations that provide not only marine education on the recreational level but also on the professional level. IYT was originally founded in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA but is now headquartered in British Colombia, Canada.

I received my formal training in sailing through IYT, which is how I acquired the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

As a standard for sailing, the ICC is often required before chartering a boat in European waters; both coastal and internal. I personally learned off the coasts of Spain as well as around the many islands around Croatia.

As I mentioned, IYT is a well-known marine education organization that’s reputation proceeds itself all over the globe.

Before they started providing recreational sailing courses (like the ICC), they worked solely with maritime professionals to ensure they could safely operate vessels of all sizes. They have schools over 250 schools in over 56 countries and are growing by the day.

The main advantage of getting your sailing training through IYT is that they’ve become the global standard in sailing, powerboat, and maine safety education.

Since most of those who charter vessels are aware of the strong standard IYT sets for its students, they’re more likely to provide you with a sailboat.

When it comes to the renewal time of your ICC, you’ll need to renew it every 5 years. Along with that, there are 24 countries that officially recognize it as an official certificate of sailing competence.

Countries Officially Recognizing the ICC: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, South Africa, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.

While there are many countries around the world that aren’t on this list (including the US), the fact of the matter is that presenting an ICC to someone you wish to charter a boat from will increase the likeliness of you taking a sailboat out on the water.

There may be a request to review your logbook and other documents confirming your competence, but there’s no doubt an ICC adds a lot of weight in your favor.

Anyway, there are numerous schools located in specific countries where the ICC is technically not officially recognized, like the US, Thailand, and countries in the Caribbean, which have been known to informally recognize the ICC.

It’s also important to remember that there are many different types of courses you can take through IYT, including weather, navigation, VHF, superyacht, powerboat, dive boat, dinghy sailing, Yachtmaster, and commercial/professional courses.

The possibilities are endless if you consider IYT, especially when you consider they have schools all over the world.

Royal Yachting Association

international yacht training

The Royal Yachting Association ( RYA ) is the oldest and most well-known governing body of dinghy, yacht, and motor cruising in the world.

Before there was any other association providing standardized education in the maritime industry, RYA was the only contributor to the expansion of maritime-based education.

Originally founded in 1875 as Yacht Racing Association in the United Kingdom, its main objective from the outset was to lay out the standards of measurement for different yachts competing in sailing races.

The reason this is important is that some sailboats may have either an advantage or disadvantage over other sailboats in a race, so they must be assigned a positive or negative handicap before the race can commence.

Since then the RYA has become a symbol of competence when it comes to sailing education and therefore has a strong reputation worldwide.

While they don’t focus as heavily on professional training as much as IYT, they have the advantage of developing a strong curriculum for recreational sailors all around the world.

Before I earned my ICC through IYT, I did my research on whether I should get my ICC through IYT or RYA.

From what I remember it wasn’t then possible to earn an ICC through RYA but instead use the evidence that you learned from RYA the necessary skillsets through their UK-based certifications.

However, they now provide a pathway for those interested in earning their ICC through RYA, which is fantastic for those wishing to sail throughout Europe and beyond.

Just like the ICC by IYT, the ICC by RYA provides the same luxuries and permissions when it comes to sailing around the world.

While not every country in the world has accepted the ICC as an official certificate for sailing competency, more and more schools are offering it as a standard for officially licensing sailing skills, including the RYA.

American Sailing Association

international yacht training

The American Sailing Association ( ASA ) is one of the most prominent sailing associations in the United States as well as the Americas in general. Their sole focus is on teaching recreational sailing to beginners and experts alike.

Established in 1983, the ASA is the youngest of the best places to get a sailing certification. Since their main focus is on recreational sailing, they pride themselves on providing the best quality educational content on the market.

This definitely shows when perusing their website and reading about all the fun activities they sponsor throughout the year.

If you’re looking to attain a certain level of certification from the ASA, then you’ll definitely be interested in the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). Similar to the ICC, the IPC is also an internationally recognized certificate of sailing competence that has a strong reputation.

Unlike the ICC, the IPC allows sailors to explore the many regions of the Americas as well as the beautiful waters of Europe.

This is in stark contrast to the ICC since it doesn’t officially allow for chartering sailboats in the US and the Americas in general. The IPC is a fantastic certification that, if I were living in the US at the time of getting my sailing certification, I would have worked toward.

When it comes to the renewal time of your IPC, you’ll need to renew it every 5 years. Also, there are 27 countries that officially recognize it as an official certificate of sailing competence (as opposed to the 24 for the ICC).

Countries Officially Recognizing the IPC: Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Countries Where It’s a “Maybe”: Moldova, Russian Federation, Serbia, Sweden, and Ukraine.

That’s definitely more countries than the ICC and even includes several “maybe” countries.

These “maybe” countries are known to generally accept the IPC when it’s presented while sometimes requiring some extra convincing through other documents, be them local certificates or log book evidence.

If you include the “maybe” countries, that brings the total number of countries from 27 to 32.

Again, similar to the ICC, the IPC is an internationally recognized certificate of sailing competence with certified sailing schools all over the world.

In all likeliness, presenting your IPC as evidence of sailing competence will be sufficient enough to be able to charter a sailboat in the most popular destinations around the world.

United States Sailing Association

international yacht training

The United States Sailing Association ( US Sailing ) is the oldest and primary governing body of sailing in the United States.

US Sailing performs a number of functions for the US sailing community, including recreational sailing and powerboat education, racing education, US Olympic team training, instructor and racing official training, and much more. Clearly, US Sailing plays a very important role in the US sailing community.

The North American Yacht Racing Union (NAYRU) was officially established back in 1897 in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA, and became US Sailing in 1991 as a non-profit aimed at building and supporting a strong and vibrant US sailing community.

They even are responsible for selecting and training the US sailing teams racing in various events during the Olympics.

Just like the ASA, US Sailing provides a means for sailors to earn their IPC so they can have the freedom to charter sailboats all across the globe. The certification provides the same exact luxuries and permissions as if it was earned from the ASA.

One of the main differences between the ASA and US Sailing in terms of the schools is that they are solely located in the United States.

This should remind you of how RYA is solely located in the UK, which is also a primary governing body of sailing.

With that in mind, US Sailing has schools all up and down the coasts as well as the interior states. On top of that, they’re even located in Mexico and the Caribbean (even Bermuda!).

Another great perk about going with US Sailing is that they offer a large variety of different courses for recreational purposes.

While you’ll undoubtedly want to investigate their IPC course, there are plenty of other interesting courses that any water-loving crew member would love to dive into.

The Best Sailing Certificate for You

As the saying goes, “knowing is half the battle”. After going through the most well-known, established sailing organizations in the world, you should have a good idea of what your options are at this point.

However, there are certain advantages and disadvantages when picking one sailing organization over the other as well as which certificate you’re more interested in earning.

Let’s walk through the most important factors you should consider before choosing one organization over the other.

Professional Training

Many people get into sailing as a recreational activity so they can simply enjoy themselves be it by cruising or racing. However, there is most definitely a percentage of people who are marine professionals seeking education.

If you’re searching for a sailing organization that provides the highest quality education at a global level, you’ll most likely want to go with IYT. They have the most established international reputation for training maritime professionals all around the world.

School Location

Arguably the most important factor in choosing a place to learn how to sail is where the closest sailing school is located.

While the sailing organizations we covered have schools all over the world, others are solely present in certain countries and regions.

The two sailing organizations that have sailing schools all over the world are IYT and ASA, with IYT covering far more countries.

Either way, one of these organizations will likely have some schools relatively close to where you are compared to RYA and US Sailing.

If you’re located in the UK, consider RYA. If you’re in the US or North America, consider US Sailing. Both organizations have a very strong network in their respective countries and provide a lot of value to their local communities.

Primary Sailing Region

Depending on where you might end up sailing the majority of the time, you’ll want to consider whether it makes sense to get one certificate over the other.

The differences between the geographical regions that recognize the ICC and the IPC aren’t huge but they certainly exist.

If you know that you won’t be leaving waters European for the gorgeous waters of the US and Caribbean, then the ICC should be sufficient for your sailing adventures.

However, if you do ever plan on crossing the pond, consider the IPC as you’ll be able to sail in both US and European waters.

I mentioned this before, but the ICC is the most well-known sailing certification in the world so it’s likely that most countries, even if they don’t officially recognize it, will recognize it informally.

If there’s any further evidence required beyond your ICC, a copy of your logbook should be more than sufficient to prove your mettle.

Beyond Sailing

Shocking as it may be, some people are more interested in other activities apart from sailing.

While these sailing organizations obviously specialize in providing top-quality sailing education, they do bring other educational opportunities to the table.

Most of the sailing organizations we took a look at provide further education in other water-based activities, but the ones that really stand out are IYT, RYA, and US Sailing.

If you’re interested in learning the ins and outs of sailing as well as one day becoming a Yachtmaster (which is my goal), consider these sailing organizations.

Placeholder

The International Certificate of Competency, commonly referred to as “ICC” is a certificate of competency, not necessarily a “course”.   The ICC is a certificate confirming that an individual is competent to the level required to meet the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Inland Water Committee (UNECE IWC) Resolution 40 .  In 2013, IYT released “courses” to train to the level of competence for 10 Meter and 24 Meter named ICC <10m and ICC <24m.  Now it is 2020 and in hindsight we recognise this was not an ideal decision because charter agencies have begun to ask for a base level certificate and not the ICC.  We are encouraging candidates to take the base level course/s and gain that certificate instead of or in addition to the ICC.  Please read all of the information below for information regarding the base level certificates.

Please note that each school must be approved by IYT Worldwide to offer the ICC to their students .  Only IYT schools that have been audited or inspected and are in good standing with IYT can offer the ICC certification.  We are happy to consider new school applications to offer this certificate.  Please note that we do not accept ISSA VHF qualifications.  (I f you are unsure if your radio license will be accepted, please send a scanned copy of the front and back of your license to [email protected] .  We will verify that your license is sufficient to receive the IYT International Certificate of Competency (ICC) license).

Are you thinking of chartering in Europe? MAKE SURE YOU ARE QUALIFIED

IT IS WISE TO HOLD BOTH FLOTILLA SKIPPER (OR HIGHER) & THE ICC

In the past, if you were chartering in Europe, an International Certificate of Competency (ICC) may have been sufficient proof of your ability to safely operate a boat.

However, it has recently been brought to our attention that a number of  European charter companies and insurance companies will not accept an ICC as sufficient proof to command a yacht for a one week bareboat charter (power or sail). These companies are insisting that the charterer should hold an IYT International Flotilla Skipper or IYT International Bareboat Skipper, power or sail  (or equivalent qualification that is on their “approved” list).

The charter companies and insurance companies do not have a comfort level handing over an expensive yacht to someone who they feel is not sufficiently qualified to command it for a weeks duration.

Some customers have had their charters cancelled because they have only held an ICC. IYT has removed the restriction of “daylight hours” on the Flotilla and Bareboat Skipper Certificates.  This restriction was applied previously  because charter companies do not allow their boats to be operated after sundown.  We are leaving this decision up to the charter companies.  IYT highly recommends holding both Flotilla Skipper or higher as well as the ICC to avoid any issues when chartering or operating in European waters and harbours.

It is imperative that you check with your charter company in advance of your charter to make sure that you hold the required qualifications.

The ICC is required for operators of most vessels on both inland and coastal waters in a large part of the European Union.

  • Candidates who successfully complete the International Flotilla or Bareboat Skipper course also qualify to hold the 24M ICC provided the course was taken with a partner school approved to offer the 24M ICC. The school may order this extra ICC certificate for you or you may order directly from IYT by contacting [email protected] .
  • Candidates who successfully complete the Small Powerboat & RIB Master – MCA Recognised course also qualify to hold the 10M ICC.  Schools that offer the Small Powerboat & RIB Master – MCA Recognised course will also be approved for the 10M ICC Certification so there will be no issue regarding the partner school chosen for the “RIB” course. The school may order this extra ICC certificate for you or you may order directly from IYT by contacting [email protected] .

IYT's ICC Government Recognitions

The 24M ICC is recignised by the British  Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

The 24M ICC is also recognised by Transport Canada so that holders of the 24M ICC (Canadian Edition) will not require a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) to operate a pleasure boat in Canada, provided the section on “Canadian Boating Requirements” has been completed. Holders of a current IYT 24M ICC can “upgrade” to the Canadian Edition by completing a short course and examination. This Transport Canada ICC remains MCA recognized.

The 10M ICC is recognised by the British Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

ICC Preparation Course Available On Line (E-learning)

We are proud to announce that we now have an E-learning course available for students to study and execute theory examinations before proceeding to an authorised IYT Training Provider to undertake the written and practical examinations. To access these courses, register and receive your IYT account ID# and log in. ICC E-learning courses are available here once logged in.

What is an ICC (and CEVNI) & where is it required?

As you may be aware, it is now mandatory to hold a recognised International Certificate of Competency (ICC) if you wish to charter a boat in certain European countries. It is generally required for the inland and coastal waters of Mediterranean countries. In Northern Europe and Scandinavia the ICC is generally not required, but it is strongly advised to check with any European country that you wish to charter in before you leave.

The ICC is a product of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Resolution 40. The ICC provides documentary assurance from one government to another that the holder meets the levels of competence laid down in Resolution 40 .

Who May Receive An IYT ICC Based On Resolution 40?

In accordance with UNECE Resolution 40 (Revision 4), citizens and residents of countries (listed below), that are signatories to Resolution 40, will be obliged to obtain an ICC from their own national issuing authority and not from IYT (with the exception of the United Kingdom, see below). The only exception for IYT to issue ICCs to citizens of these countries, is if the applicant can provide proof of residency* in a country not on this list. For example: an Austrian National living in Spain or Greece that can provide “proof of residency” in Spain or Greece would be allowed to receive an ICC from IYT.

*Proof of residency (examples) Utility bill (electric or gas), Property tax bill, Telephone bill, Insurance bill, IYT can issue ICCs to any other country’s citizens that are not listed below.

As of July 2023 the following countries have adopted resolution 40.

  • Czech Republic
  • Netherlands
  • South Africa
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom***

**Latvia accepts the IYT MCA Recognised ICCs issued to their residents or citizens.

***IYT has been authorised to issue ICC’s to United Kingdom Nationals and Residents for the past 18 years which are issued on behalf of the British Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Reference: UNECE Resolution 40 document Guidelines_to_Resolution_No. 40.pdf

Note: The list of UNECE member states that have accepted Resolution 40 is subject to change without notice therefore a person’s eligibility can change during the period the ICC is valid for. Should this be the case, the certificate holder must notify IYT and surrender the certificate. If the certificate holder cannot satisfactorily demonstrate his or her continued eligibility when the certificate expires it will not be renewed by IYT.

ICC Endorsements & Vessel Sizes

The Endorsements may be:

  • (Power -24m) for any power driven vessel up to 24 metres.
  • (Power -10m) for any power driven vessel up to 10 metres.
  • (Sail – 24m & Power 10m ) Sail vessel up to 24 metres. (Must include Power 10m for operating tender to and from shore).
  • (PWC) for personal water craft.
  • (Coastal waters) for coastal passages only.
  • (Coastal and inland) for use in the inland waterways of Europe as well as coastal. A CEVNI exam must be successfully completed. See below for more details.

What vessel sizes are covered?

For Sailing Vessels

The ICC Sail <24m, Power <10m covers sailing vessels <24 meters and power <10 meters . The power <10m is included as most sailboats have small dinghies for going to and from shore.

To gain this certificate the candidate must do the IYT International Crew & Flotilla/Bareboat Skipper Sail course (modules 1 – 11 and 13 – 25 in the IYT Recreational Programme contained in the “International Boating & Sailing Passport”). The candidate must either hold a recognised VHF Marine Communications Qualification or must do IYT’s module 12 which is the IYT VHF/SRC Marine Communications Course.

Note that the online ICC course includes all of the above mentioned modules, 1 – 25 which includes VHF/SRC.

For Power Vessels

the ICC certificate is based on which course you undertake as outlined below.

If you wish to operate a power vessel <24m, please do as stated above for sailing vessels (except of course take the power course).

If you wish to operate a power vessel <10m, please take the IYT/MCA Small Powerboat & RIB Master course. After successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to receive the ICC <10m Power.

How do I obtain an ICC?

Most IYT Partner Schools are approved to offer the ICC certification to their students. However, you should verify this with the school where you choose to train or on our website. The schools who are approved to offer this certification are determined by IYT. Please remember that candidates must meet the requirements outlined above regarding Resolution 40.

There are two ways to obtain an ICC. By holding an acceptable IYT Worldwide qualification as mentioned in the next section “Which IYT Certificates of Competency are recognised for obtaining an ICC without the need for an examination?” , OR, by attending one of these qualifying courses listed below with an IYT partner school approved to issue ICCs to their students.

If you hold an acceptable qualifying IYT Worldwide certificate please follow these instructions to obtain an ICC: (Note – See Resolution 40 requirements above to determine if you are eligible to receive an IYT ICC or if you must obtain from your own national issuing authority and not from IYT).

  • If you have not registered on our site and have a user I.D.# please do so.
  • Do this by going to “login” on the top menu bar, then register and follow the prompts.
  • IMPORTANT:  A digital signature is now required (as of Feb 28, 2024) in order for IYT to issue the ICC Certificate.  Please see these instructions on how to upload a digital signature to your IYT Account ID. https://iytnet.com/media/docs/How_to_add_signature_to_profile_for_ICC.pdf
  • Make sure to upload a current photo government issued I.D. such as a passport or identity card. We must have this to process your certificate.
  • Make sure to upload a good quality headshot photograph as this photo will be used on your certificate.
  • Make sure to enter the shipping address with phone number as this will be used when we mail or courier the certificate.

Send email to [email protected] with the following:

  • A scan of the valid (not expired) certificate you hold entitling you to receive the ICC certificate.
  • For 24M ICC – A scan of your valid (not expired) VHF certificate
  • For 10M ICC – A scan of your valid (not expired) VHF certificate, or if you’ve done the online Small Powerboat & RIB Master eLearning course, provide a scan of the downloadable PDF “Basic VHF-SRC Course Completion Certificate”.
  • Inland Waters Endorsement: If you wish to add the inland waters endorsement (such as French canals) to your certificate you will need to complete the CEVNI examination and the school will choose the certificate type “coastal and inland waters”.  You may do the online CEVNI course and exam   or  you may take the CEVNI exam at the school..
  • State where (which school) you took the course for your qualifying certificate.
  • State your IYT I.D. number (received at end of registration process).
  • Advise courier (fee depends on location) or airmail (free of charge). Note that we cannot trace airmail if lost.
  • An order/invoice will be created in our system and emailed to email address on profile for payment.
  • Once payment is made the order will be reviewed, processed and shipped.

If you attend a qualifying course with an IYT partner school approved to issue ICCs, the school will place an order for your qualifying certificate (ie. Bareboat Skipper, Small Powerboat & RIB Master) plus the ICC.  Please follow these instructions:

  • After successful completion of the course the school will order your qualifying certificate and the ICC for you. By doing so the school is attesting to your competence.
  • Inland Waters Endorsement: If you wish to add the inland waters endorsement (such as French canals) to your certificate you will need to complete the CEVNI examination and the school will choose the certificate type “coastal and inland waters”.  You may do the online CEVNI course and exam or you may take the CEVNI exam at the school.

If you wish to have an existing IYT ICC endorsed for navigating inland waters you must take the CEVNI exam.  To do this you may:

  • complete the online course “CEVNI EU Inland Waterways Endorsement eLearning” found here
  • go to an IYT school approved to offer the ICC and undertake the exam. In this case, the school must place the order for certification thus verifying successful completion.

Which IYT Certificates of Competency are recognised for obtaining an ICC without the need for an examination?

Please note there are pre-requisite courses required for Flotilla Skipper and Bareboat Skipper.  They are IYT International Crew (or exhibit knowledge to this level) and IYT Marine Communications VHF-SRC (or recognised equivalent certificate).

* A 24M ICC can be awarded based on a Flotilla Skipper certificate; however, it is recommended candidates gain a Bareboat Skipper certificate.

** Please note that for Catamaran certificates, the equivalent ICC Certificate will not state “catamaran”.

Please note that training and examinations for the qualifications listed above must have been undertaken at an ICC approved facility and you must meet eligibility requirements outlined above regarding Resolution 40.

Who may obtain an ICC

IYT Worldwide has had approval from the M.C.A. (Maritime and Coastguard Agency of Great Britain) for many years to issue ICCs to United Kingdom passport holders and persons of other nationalities provided they are eligible under Resolution 40. See above. The school must be approved by IYT Worldwide to instruct the ICC course. The applicant must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older.
  • Be physically and mentally fit to operate a pleasure craft, and in particular, must have sufficient powers of vision and hearing.
  • Have successfully passed a written and practical examination or prove the necessary competence for pleasure craft operation by holding an acceptable IYT Worldwide certificate.

Is there a period of validity for an ICC?

The ICC is valid for a period of five years. See instructions for revalidation

Cancellation or Withdrawal of an ICC

IYT Worldwide may suspend or withdraw an ICC where the holder has by some action demonstrated that he or she has not complied with the conduct demanded of a holder of an ICC. The matter will be presented before the IYT Worldwide Training Board for adjudication.

Important Notice: Charter Brokers are asking for qualifications higher than ICC – Please be aware

Over the past few years, it has come to our attention that a large number of charter brokers are asking to see/verify a higher nautical qualification other than the ICC (International Certificate of Competency). The charter companies are asking for proof that a client is capable of handling a $400,000 charter boat for a weeks vacation, as the ICC does not prove this capability. As you can imagine, a broker would want to be sure that a skipper is fully capable of handling their vessels before renting.

The ICC is a certificate that based on one’s level of competency. It is not a “course”. In hindsight, IYT and IYT candidates would have been better served had we not allowed the ICC to be ordered as a qualification without proof of, at minimum, an IYT Flotilla or Bareboat Skipper Certificate, but ordered directly by candidates who hold these qualifications or higher.

Therefore, we highly recommend that schools purchase the IYT qualification as well as the ICC qualification for their candidates who want an ICC. This will eliminate any concerns of their ICC not being accepted by charter brokers.

In some instances, a candidate may hold their national qualification plus an ICC, which may be accepted by charter brokers. IYT obviously has no control over what brokers will or will not accept. We believe it is better to be on the safe side and ask the schools to make this recommendation to their candidates.

As you advance and become more proficient as crew or skipper you take on bigger challenges that require proper training to ensure the safety of your family and friends. The bigger the boat or length of adventure the more training you require.

Most of us prefer to spend our time on the water and not in a classroom. To facilitate this, IYT has a series of E-learning courses available for the theoretical part of sail and powerboat training.

  • Take one of our online (Elearning) courses for your next level of training.
  • Plan your practical training at one of our many schools worldwide to earn your final qualification.
  • Book in advance with your school as class sizes and availability may be limited.
  • Review the IYT course progression details to learn about professional level courses.
  • Spend time on the water and properly log your seatime.

The Boating Lifestyle is one of the most rewarding pursuits available. There is something physically and emotionally invigorating when you are offshore. To enjoy the experience fully you need the proper training & skills to be safe, prepared and command a vessel.
