Laser Performance Bug: Best Dinghy

The Bug carries on the evolution of the rotomolded dinghy. With the race sail, it moves right along, even with a full-sized adult.

In the pint-sized sailing and racing dinghy department, everything and anything has been tried over the years, sometimes with mixed results. It’s hard to beat the Optimist Dinghy in terms of simplicity. But when sailboat builders started playing with rotomolded plastic years ago, the doors were cast wide open. With rotomolding polyethylene you can try all sorts of things if you’re clever, and with the Bug, designer Jo Richards and the folks at LaserPerformance have proven there’s still plenty of room for creativity at 8 feet. Talk about one versatile dinghy.

The Bug starts as a boat for beginners with a short rig, and allows those beginners to climb the performance ladder with a larger performance rig. It’s stable, thanks to its beam, and two skegs help its upwind ability and allow the boat to be towed tamely behind the family cruiser or a sailing school tender.

But it does more than sail well. It’s equipped to be rowed (oars are optional and stored inside the hull), and there’s an optional motor mount for a small outboard. There’s even an optional integrated hard-plastic wheel, built into the bow, which will make for easy maneuvering around docks and marinas.

Even though our judges were well over the designed weight and size for the 8’5″ Bug (the optimum crew weight is between 66 and 154 pounds), they were able to appreciate its sailing qualities. “Upwind the balance was good,” said Stewart, “and the sail has a sweet spot for sheeting when the mast bends and matches the luff curve. It maneuvered well in light air and was stable.”

When sailing downwind, they simply eased the cunningham and heeled the boat to weather. The flat aft section sections and straight run allowed it to scoot along. “I think about how much little kids are going to want to sail the boat,” says Stewart. “I also think the kids are going to like the fact that it has the cool sail and the cool features and was simple to sail.”

The beginner’s rig is a 41-square-foot Dacron sail that furls around a two-piece aluminum mast. The performance sail, which is a 57-square-foot laminated Mylar sail, is carried on an aluminum mast with a pre-bent topmast. On the performance rig, the boom is linked to the mast so when the sail is eased the mast rotates, keeping the topmast section in plane with the boom. The sail can also be roller reefed for heavy-air sailing.

The judges all agreed the Bug is ideal for sailing clubs, as it gives beginners or more advanced sailors an enjoyable ride. There really isn’t any other dinghy designed to do all that Richards has stuffed into this sweet little boat.

Pros: Simple, fast, and fun to sail with a plethora of features that make the boat great for beginners and experienced junior sailors.

Cons: It’s too small for adults to sail, and we want to.

Designer’s mission accomplished? LaserPerformance wanted a boat that would appeal to yacht club’s junior sailing programs. Jo Richards has hit the sweet spot with this clever and versatile little dinghy.

The new Laser bug

Ingenious, adaptable, attractive and affordable...

The Optimist dinghy may have met its match in the new Laser bug that was unveiled at the London Boat Show.

The Oppie has been the starter boat of choice for 60 years and its simple design and seaworthiness has kept it head and shoulders above other small dinghy upstarts. Until now, perhaps.

The Laser Bug is aimed squarely at the would-be Optimist buyer and makes the Oppie look very old indeed.

Jo Richards, designer of the Bug, was asked to build a modern dinghy that offers a huge range of performance and could suit beginners and experts alike.

He came up with a design that seems to have fulfilled the brief and much more besides.

Looking at the Bug besides an Oppie the differences are obvious.

GRP bouyed up by bulky airbags is replaced by a hollow triple layer polythylene hull. The Bug will float even if the air chamber is flooded.

The spritsail-rig of the Oppie is replaced by a conventional bermduian sail that can be rolled around the mast to reef.

The wide sections of the stern, free of airbags, would allow an adult to sail the Bug without needing a contortionist’s skills and there’s plenty of room for two kids.

The Bug comes in a learner and racing option. The former has a wheel partly recessed into the bow. Pull the two integral aluminium handles from the stern drainage ports and the dinghy can be trundled like a wheel barrow from boat or carpark to the shore. At 46kg it’s easily carried on roof racks.

The Bug Race has a pre-bent mast top and a 5.3m sq Mylar sail, more akin to a windsurf rig.

There are storage compartments for a bottle of water (today’s kids have to hydrate!) and for a pair of oars and rowlocks, plus Dad’s car keys or mobile phone. The box for the dagger board is wide and flat to make a comfortable seat from which to row.

Jo Richards is the man behind many of Laser’s most popular designs and has been working on the Bug for two years.

‘I am ecstatic with where we have ended up. It’s rare to walk away from a project feeling that you have met all the targets.’

The Bug costs GBP 1,350. The Bug Race is GBP 1,450, putting it just below the price of Laser’s Optimist.

Expect to see Bugs popping up in sailing schools around the country. Whether they will be able to shake the Oppie off the top spot as the choice for national and international regettas is doubtful. Though give them a decade or two and who knows.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

R ussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.
