The sound of waves lapping at the hull is simulated, so you can imagine you are on a cruise.

The location is on a cliff at Jeongdongjin beach, renowned for having the best sunrise in Korea. The revolving bar and lounge on the top floor allow you the best sunrise and sunset view.

From the urban side of Jeongdongjin, the ship looks like it was run ashore. But in reality, it's perched off a high cliff.

The boat is 541 feet (165 meters) long, 148 feet (45 meters) high, and weighs an incredible 30,000 tons.

God knows how they got it up on the cliff in the first place… perhaps it was stranded up there like Noah’s Ark after the flood.

Jeongdongjin is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beautiful beaches and stunning sunrise/sunset views.

The hotel's grand entrance is along two pools, split like the Red Sea by Moses and decorated by statues on both sides.

The circular lounge's focus-point is a piano standing right in the center of the space.

You will be spoiled for a choice of things to do as there is a lounge, nightclub, karaoke bar, seawater pool, and two restaurants.

A peculiar and insta-worthy seaside resort in Gangneung.

If I were to pick the most peculiar hotel experience in South Korea, Sun Cruise Resort & Yacht located at Jeongdongjin Beach (정동진 해수욕장) in Gangwon-do would be on the list. It is the world’s first on-land cruise ship — Yes, you read that right. It is a cruise ship built atop a cliff that is overlooking the magnificent East Sea of South Korea.

This beachside hotel & resort takes all the joy of a cruise ship and combines it with the convenience of an on-land seaside resort, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. We don’t know how exactly the engineers and architect managed to get the 30,000 tons ship up the cliff, some joke that it may be cast ashore like Noah’s Ark after the flood, but it is certainly an interesting sight especially when you’re at the Jeongdongjin Beach.

The resort is located on a cliff along the pristine Jeongdongjin beach & Jeondongjin Train Station (전동진역), the train station closest to the ocean in the world. The beach is known as one of South Korea’s best sunrise spots, attracting thousands of sunrise spectators each year, especially on new year’s day.

I took an overnight Mugunghwa Train from Seoul’s Cheongnyangni station (청량리역) to Gangneung’s Jeongdongjin Station. What welcomes me at Jeongdongjin Train Station in the wee hours of the morning was this spectacular view below —

The resort was basking in the beautiful golden sunlight in the early morning. While the overnight train was tiring, the sight when we arrived at the beach was truly memorable.

The resort is located near Jeongdongjin beach which stretches over 250 meters with 3 swimming spots, it is also very near to the Jeongdongjin Railbike Station. Next to the hotel is Sandglass Park (모래시계공원) and Sculpture Park (정동진 조각공원) so you can wander through bushes of blossoming flowers in spring and autumn.

The Property

The resort has two ships that are specially built by the shipyards before moving to the seaside – the older “Sun Cruise” is 165 metres long, and 45 metres high. It has a bakery, a restaurant, a sky lounge, karaoke, banquet halls, a convenience store and an infinity pool.

The new “Beach Cruise” is a ship with exclusive pool villas where guests can enjoy private pools that links to their room. There is also an observation deck with a glass floor suspended above the crashing waves below.

The resort offers a wide variety of room types. The Sun Cruise is made up of Hotel & Apartment styled rooms. All room types in the old wing are either Ocean or Sunrise Half-Ocean facing rooms. There are Standard, Deluxe, Luxury, Junior Suites, Corner Suites and Suncruise Suites to choose from. The Apartment styled room comes with a small pantry where guests can prepare simple dishes in the room.

At the newly built Beach Cruise, guests enjoy the luxury of a private pool right in their pool villas. Various room types come with a pool: The Royal Suite, Superior Suite, Infinity Pool Suite; and the Duplex Suite & Terrace Suite includes a sea-facing jacuzzi within the room.

Breakfast takes place at the Sun Cruise, where guests can enjoy the scenic view of the East Sea and Sculpture Park. During our stay, it was the Typhoon season so we did not get to enjoy the typical blue sky and emerald sea views. However, the strong waves and misty waters of the East Sea during the wet season did leave a strong impression.

From a glace of their recent tags on Instagram, their breakfast variety has greatly improved too!

The hotel has undergone an uplifting refurbishment and has added a few Instagrammable spots you wouldn’t want to miss. These aesthetic spots with clear blue sky, turquoise waters, white sand beaches and bird’s eye views are perfect to satisfy your dreamy vacation needs. You’ll find this “stairway to heaven” right within the hotel premise, where you can climb up the stairs that are leading up to a view of the East Sea. With the perfect weather and some magic hour, your photos would turn out great.

Located on the top of the seashore cliff is the resort’s picturesque outdoor infinity pool. You can breathe in the expansive view of the East Sea and enjoy leisure time lounging at the poolside.

At the resort’s 360 degrees rotating Sky Lounge, you can enjoy the endlessly stretched view of the East Sea while sipping your coffee. For cocktail and wine aficionados, you’ll be spoilt for choice here.

Don’t miss the photo opportunity at your room’s balcony once you checked into the room! The emerald sea makes the best background for the perfect holiday shoot! If you are staying in the Infinity Pool Suite, make full use of the magic hours for that dreamy shot in the pool, by the sea!

Writer’s Note: Sun Cruise Resort is a cool resort to stay in while in Gangneung. It is very near to the beach, which makes it the perfect summer holiday resort to wind down and chill. If you have a few more days to spare in Gangneung, it will make perfect sense to spend a leisure 2D1N here at this property and enjoy the resort facilities! After all, you shouldn’t be rushing in & out to complete your tour schedule while leaving the nice pool villa empty throughout your stay.

One thing you might need to take note of is to avoid the summer Monsoon season or occasion Typhoon season as the rain can be rather merciless and worst of all, it can last a few days.

Best stay ever in South Korea”

Amazing hotel, clean room, clean bathroom, clean balcony, clean kitchen. Looks and feels better than the pictures shown on the internet. Our stay was really comfortable. Whenever I called them they managed to speak in English with me. The hotel restaurant is great. I'm a vegetarian, so I made a request for vegetarian pasta and they accommodated my request and served only tomato pasta. Pizza was great too. Everyone was polite and helpful. Room cleaning was done every single day of our stay. There's also a play area for the kids to spend time. The views are breathtaking and the beach is not too far from the hotel. A convenience store is also available at the hotel with pretty much everything required for a stay. And the bakery on the first floor was amazing with plenty of options to choose from. I wish to visit here again and would definitely recommend it to others.

I've always wanted to visit a hotel that looks like a cruise ship on a cliff while passing through Jeongdongjin. This time, I made a reservation for a 2-night, 3-day family trip. For Sun Cruise Resort Hotel, you have to endure the inconvenience of not being able to drive up to the lobby and carrying your luggage from the parking lot. You can have an experience similar to staying in a cruise ship cabin, and the bedding was very comfortable and clean. The ocean view from the room was the best experience. However, even though it was the off-season, I felt that the restaurants around the hotel were unfriendly and overpriced. The staff were friendly, and it was nice to have a CU convenience store and a bakery in the hotel. The sculpture park and the sunrise observation garden have the best views. It was a hotel that I definitely want to visit again for a family trip.

The room was clean and the staff were friendly. The chicken wings I had through room service were excellent. The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of options, and the fresh fruit was a nice touch. It was romantic to have breakfast while looking out at the sea, and it gave me energy for the day. The staff were attentive and cleared plates quickly, making for a comfortable dining experience. There is also a sculpture park outside the hotel, providing plenty of photo opportunities. There are also great spots for taking pictures near the entrance, with a view of the sunrise. The smell of freshly baked bread from the bakery on the first floor made me crave a cup of coffee in the morning. I came with my high school daughter and husband, and we were all very satisfied. My husband wants to come back in the summer. Even though we only spent one night at the hotel, there was plenty to see and do.

Traveling with Mom”

Stayed in a luxury hotel-style ocean view twin room. The beds were big and there were two, so my mom and I could sleep comfortably. The ocean view was also great. I changed from a condo-style room on the 3rd floor to a hotel-style room on the 6th floor, which was excellent. Breakfast is a must. I plan to post it on my blog, but it was the best to have breakfast while watching the sunrise. Except for the shuttle bus reservation mistake made by the staff, they were kind. The only downside is that the phone connection is not good, but when I went there in person, only one or two staff members were handling the guests, so there was no one to answer the phone. I had to bring my own slippers because there were none, but there was toothbrush and toothpaste. There were plenty of towels, which was nice. I also liked the capsule coffee.

A Place with Beautiful Ocean View and Stunning Night View”

Very satisfied with the 2-night-3-day trip. The night view of the Sun Cruise Hotel itself is a bonus! The beautiful sunrise, ocean view, and leisurely walk in the sculpture park are very healing for both body and mind. The facilities are convenient to use, and the staff are very friendly. The nearby Hourglass Park is well-maintained, and the rail bike that can travel along the seaside road beyond Jeongdongjin Station is highly recommended. You can also enjoy coffee at Anmok Port.

Sun Cruise Hotel is one of a kind "cruise ship hotel" in South Korea. The "aground ship" hotel is part of the "Sun Cruise Resort and Yacht" complex in Jeongdongjin, on South Korea's eastern coast. The resort is popular for its "run aground cruise ship" shaped hotel offering an amazing view from atop of a cliff. Hotel's ship dimensions are: length 541 ft (165 m), height / keel to funnel 148 ft (45 m), weight 30,000 tons.

Korea's "Sun Cruise" ship hotel

Sun Cruise resort in Jeongdongjin is located on Korean shores of Sea of Japan (South Korea promotes the name "East Sea"). Resort's location is perfect as the Sea of Japan, like the Mediterranean Sea, is calm (almost without tides) as it's almost entirely enclosed from the Pacific Ocean by mainland Japan, Russia, and Korea.

Kore'as Sun Cruise hotel was specifically designed to overlook the sunny beach of this beautiful resort area, looking like a cruise ship and offering facilities and amenities just like real liners. The cruise ship hotel attracts a huge number of international tourists. Its shape actually resembles a Royal Caribbean ship of the company's older Sovereign-Class. There are 3 such vessels, currently operated by RCCL's subsidiary Pullmantur Cruises .

Looking out over the sea and witnessing the magnificent Jeongdongjin sunrise and sunset, the "ship hotel" is itself a travel destination. The unusual design ranked it among the most popular South Korean tourist attractions.

Built in 2002, this colossal hotel structure actually was invented for tourists who don't have the budget or time to go on a real ship cruise vacation. The bizarre location is not the only thing setting Sun Cruise Hotel apart from real liners - hotel rooms are all with heated floors, and the surrounding area has walking gardens with sculptures.

South Korea's cruise ship hotel was designed to emulate the cruising experience. It was even constructed at the Korean shipyard. A hotel stay truly approximates cruise voyage. Constructed high on the mountain edge, a stroll on the "open deck" provides guests with the feeling of being at sea. To further allusion, the "cruise ship hotel" even plays on speakers' bird calls and sounds of wave crashing - throughout the whole hotel area.

• The hotel offers a total of 211 rooms, including bedrooms and apartments. All staterooms have heated floors.
• Six restaurants that serve European and Korean food, along with a rotating bar on the top floor, give visitors panoramic views of the famed sunrises.
• A night club and karaoke, beautiful sky lounge, and seawater swimming pool were also made to pamper.
• Six function rooms, state-of-the-art, were specially designed for workshops and seminars.
• Sporting facilities - for the more dynamic guests, include a fitness club, volleyball court, netted golf range.
• Visitors can stop by adjacent to the Sun Cruise Hotel theme park and further the experience.
• The Sun Cruise Hotel and Resort is also famous for the "Hands of Promise" located within landscaped gardens and rising from the ground, together with other sculptures' variety.
• An observation area, which is made of glass floor suspending above the sea, is among the amenities, along with the exhibition hall and the lake.
• Prices for a room at Jeongdongjin's Sun Cruise Hotel start at 80,000 South Korean Won, which is ~US$70 per night.

The resort complex also has a yacht marina with 5 boat slots, helipad (helicopter landing platform) and its own bar lounge.

In 2003, a construction with a similar theme ("Titanic Hotel") started in Turkey (Titanic Beach Lara). The Turkish resort has 550 hotel rooms, 3 swimming pools, premium Flower Shop, Toy Shop. At the cost of USD 165 million, in China was built an RMS Titanic replica hotel .

The South Korean Sun Cruise Resort & Yacht complex in Jeongdongjin is the first in the world on-land themed cruise resort. The "cruise ship hotel" provides everything a real ship can offer, except the seasickness risk. Thankfully, this boat doesn't rock - at least the owners assure so. But better be careful around the bow because the only thing which separates guests from the below cliffs is a short railing - beware if you suffer from vertigo.

Sun cruise Resort and Yacht is one of its kind in the World. It is a resort in Jeongdongjin South Korea ( east coast). The unique design of the hotel resort makes it one of the major tourist attractions of the Country. It gives you an experience of living on a yacht. ( Perfect for people who have Thalassophobia or fear of sea)

The property is well managed and thoughtfully designed. The lovely exteriors are complimented by stunning interiors. Beautiful fish pond at both the sides of the entrance way is an interesting addition. The property has a park with many unique sculpture. There is plenty of space for you to unwind.

What to expect at Sun Cruise resort & yacht?

It is one of the most unique hotels hands down. The first word that came out of my mouth when I stepped on the property was WOW . We were there to celebrate my birthday . I thought It was the perfect location to bring in my special day. In fact, it could be a perfect venue for any celebration, birthday party, small wedding or get together.

The sprawling property boasts of a huge pool, European and Korean restaurants, Karaoke room, health club & convenience store. The room's interior is a bit dated but in a good shape.

Booking tip : Although all the rooms have sea view but the rooms of the north are better. It gets better at high floors. The room with sculpture park view has the actual sun rise view.

Wow Factors of Sun cruise resort & yacht

There is no denying that the location of the place is a winner. The view is spectacular from every angle. Unlike many other prime hotel properties which are either amidst the commotion or sandwiched between other buildings, Sun cruise resort & yacht will wow you with its setting. The serenity of the place is unmatchable.

2. The Interior

I checked the pictures of the resort online. I was rather skeptical if it was as good as it looked . It was indeed beautiful, actually better than I expected in terms of the appearance. The granite flooring, rich wooden interior complimented by equally gorgeous artifacts, a breathtaking center piece and delightful flower arrangement make a wonderful first impression.

3. Perfect romantic getaway

If I could have my way I would have planned my honeymoon at this place. It is simply romantic. Every room has spectacular view. Imagine getting up in the morning with an insane sunrise view.

Swimming in the pool or taking a walk in the lush garden with your partner, a candle lit dinner with a 360° view of the place, romantic gazebo to spend a cozy evening, it's perfect for a romantic getaway.

Sightseeing at Sun Cruise Resort & Yacht: Not planning to stay at the resort? You can still check out the property by paying an entrance fee of W 5000 per person. You will be allowed to check the sculpture garden and beach area.

No So happening facts about Sun cruise resort & Yacht

The rooms are spacious and well kept yet first thing you will notice is that they do not have the usual toiletries in place. Apart from Shampoo, conditioner & body wash in Jumbo bottles there are no other product in the room. With the price tag, it is expected to provide at least the usual welcome pack to the guests. I have stayed at several hotels in South Korea. They all provide good quality personal products like hair gel, body cream, eye mask, room slippers, dental hygiene kit etc. It was a big disappointment considering the price they are charging.

2. Cleanliness

It came rather as a rude surprise that the room was not properly cleaned. I could see the traces of previous guest in my room. Beside the sheet and comforter too has a strange smell. The room was not cleaned until we asked for it at the front desk.

3. Water is chargeable

You heard it right. You have to purchase water bottle as long as you stay here. There is no provision of complimentary water bottles or drinks in the room. I found it odd.

4. The restaurant & cafe are expensive

The first impression of the place was pretty good. Hence we decided to check all its in house facilities. We tried the restaurant and cafe. The menu was decent but not comprehensive. They had a nice selection of wines. Somehow at the price you would expect a fine dinning experience but it was a let down. There was just two tables occupied yet the food took a good 30 minutes to arrive. The waiter didn't speak English therefore was not of much help. If you are on a budget, I would recommend to try any eatery outside than the in-house restaurant.

Sun cruise Resort & Yacht is a place to spend a relaxed weekend. The place speaks luxury and class. It is unlike any hotel or resort in South Korea. I was totally smitten by the beauty& elegance of the place. Overall it was a memorable trip for me with minor glitches. If you like to unwind at a luxurious and one of a kind place in the world , this is the your bet. Totally Recommend!

The inaugural Mediterranean voyages will begin in March 2026. The adventures will showcase several sun-plenty destinations, such as Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey. The itinerary will also spotlight the Greek gems of Athens, Santorini, and Milos. More details will be released in the coming months, but Four Seasons says seafarers can expect a variety of experiences that go above and beyond that of the regular cruise or tour.

Four Seasons says all itineraries are crafted with flexibility in mind, meaning guests can tailor their own adventures. In addition, the team offers customizable pre-and-post hotel and overland programs at Four Seasons hotels and resorts so you can make it a long and memorable vacation.

The vessel itself is designed to evoke all the elegance of your favorite Four Seasons. The luxurious interior can accommodate 195 guests across 95 suites and about 210 crew, meaning that the guest-to-crew ratio is definitely in your favor. Four Seasons says the yacht also offers 50 percent more living space per guest than comparable vessels on the seas.

Beyond the suites, seafarers can enjoy 11 dining options, spa and wellness offerings, a transverse marina, and a 65-foot stern pool that will be one of the largest in the industry.

“Our teams are dedicated to innovating and delivering genuine service, ensuring each journey is defined by comfort, elegance, and personalization, setting a new standard for luxury hospitality experiences at sea.” Four Seasons president and CEO Alejandro Reynal said in a statement.
