X-Yachting

  • X-Yachts Xp44

A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Our carbon masted Xp44 combines impressive performance with simplicity of handling, appealing to all the family. The comfort and luxury level beats any mainstream charter boat and it is on the same boat that sailors around the world excel in top racing events. Stability is the key principal and by using the most advanced build technology with vacuum infusion, carbon keel frame, hull and rudder design optimization and a unique carbon mast, the result is dynamic and easy going sailing under all weather conditions.

This model was the first of the Xperformance line to be launched, and was named Sailing World’s ‘Yacht of the Year’ in 2014.

A highly optimised hull shape offers exemplary performance in a range of wind conditions, on all angles of sail, under both ORC and IRC handicap systems. Key elements of the hull design include reduced upright beam and wetted surface area, while the transom shape ensures that as windspeed builds and the boat powers up, the overall waterline length increases for additional speed.

Uncompromised Comfort

Space is luxury, five star outdoor living, safe by design.

Who said that true sailing performance comes only with plain unfriendly interiors. The X-Yachts design superiority hides behind the vacuum infusion technology on the hull construction, the carbon frame over the keel and the right weight distribution of all the fittings which let room -weight wise- to include all the necessary premium materials to create the feeling of a five star hotel, but this time on a boat.

The 3 cabin layout,  with two generously sized WCs/showers on a 44ft yacht is delivering lots of space everywhere, making living on board a truly relaxing experience. Ideally this yacht will comfortably accommodate 6 adults but if wished can sleep another two persons in saloon area and another two children or agile adults at the aft removable sea berths (check Layout & Accommodation details below ).

The well-proportioned saloon gives the yacht a spacious feel, but well positioned hand rails and good furniture placement ensure it is always safe and easy to move around no matter the heel angle.

Everything in the interior is a beautifully crafted in the known all time classic X-yachts way

The standard full teak bathing platform creates a perfect area for relaxing as well as easy access from the water or dinghy. In this way you can take full advantage of the swim stops or the overnight stays on one of the endless safe anchorages of the Greek archipelago.

The  cockpit space on board the Xp44 is not only designed to be functional and safe while at sea but also creates a luxurious outdoor living space. The twin wheels and recessed mainsheet track ensuring that the cockpit area is spacious and uncluttered.

A deck shower is fitted as standard. The high back rests not only offer protection while at sea but also create a comfortable seating area on the fitted cockpit cushions

The Xp44 incorporates 40yrs design experience of the Danish boat yard. A boat you feel sure to spend time on with your friends and family, even when the weather conditions are not ideal.

The vacuum infused epoxy, full sandwich hull saves important weight and it maximises strength and stiffness. All saved weight is used to increase the yachts’ stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel more safe and comfortable.

The carbon frame is glued to the inside of the hull and takes all the loads from the keel and mast. This keeps the yacht stiff, strong and safe. In the same aspect the lead bulb are encapsulated in a reinforced epoxy e-glass shell.

Sailing Performance, on Every Angle

Any boat can go well downwind with a decent sailplan and hull shape. The challenge for the Danish X-Yachts designers was how to achieve a big smile on the face of the skipper any time all directions of sailing are included in the route. And they did a pretty good job as you will realise from the first moments behind helm.

The Xp44 converts the Greek archipelago into a sailing arena waiting for you to explore and the Greek islands as your buoys. Easy you will consistently see two digit numbers in speed over ground when in broad reach with asymmetrical spinnaker and will be pointing incredibly high, with velocity-made-good unimaginable, compared to any other conventional yacht out there.

Flexible Sailplan, Easy to Handle

Taking full advantage of the carbon mast, we have engineered the sailplan of our Xp44 to be a perfect match to the sailing characteristics of the hull, to the different uses for holidays or racing and to the local Greek conditions. So all boats are fitted with:

  • Main sail with two reefs, 1 full & 4 mid. battens, cruising laminate taffeta CDX
  • Jib nr3.5, cruising laminate taffeta CDX, sheeted to tracks, adjustable from cockpit, with roller battens.
  • Optionally asymmetrical spinnaker A2
  • Optionally asymmetrical spinnaker A5
  • Optionally a Code Zero, to get you going when close reaching in light wind conditions

Ultimate Sail Design

All X-Yachting tri-radial sails have been thoroughly engineered up to every small detail, in order to perfectly match the X-Yachts sailing philosophy and honour the true sailing performance of each boat separately. Countless hours of work have been dedicated locally in Greece, from our globally  recognised partners Quantum Sails and their talented sail designer and race winning sailor Pat Tahtatzis to design, test and execute this important challenge and the result is in one word: “Perfect!”

Accommodation

3 cabins / 2 wcs / sleeps 6 adults + 2 adults + 2 children.

The layout includes the master bow cabin with a double bed and an ensuite WC with shower, the aft starboard cabin with one more double bed and the aft port side cabin with split bed which can be converted (upon request during booking) to full size double bed. The aft head has an independent entry door from the saloon area so that it can be shared from both aft cabins.  So 6 adults can comfortably sleep without any compromise.

If the team is up for it, another two adults can sleep in the saloon area in the two sofas. Also in both aft cabins there are sea berths which we can install (as an option), on the sides over the main bed, where another two children or agile adults can sleep (one per sea berth). This feature is often used by couples with one child/teenager or so or young friends.

So in total there can sleep max 10 passengers on board which is also the max nominal capacity of the boat.

  • Updated: June 5, 2014

When the breeze is on, just about any sailboat will get up and go, but it’s the light-air days that make you appreciate a well-designed and balanced hull, an efficient sail plan and a responsive rudder. It was the latter conditions that we were dealt the morning after the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, when we went for a test sail aboard the new Xp 44 from X-Yachts .

“Sailed beautifully, steered beautifully, everything was executed very, very well,” concluded Boat of the Year judge Mark Schrader afterward. The Xp 44 was the first boat we’d sailed after the show and it set the bar quite high for the remainder of the fleet throughout a week of sea trials.

Indeed, the entire three-judge panel left the Xp 44 that day extolling its looks, construction, gear and, most of all, the time each got to spend on the helm. To add my own two cents, I know I had a noticeable grin as I sat to leeward, leaning against the lifelines and steering with just my fingertips. In 10 knots of wind, the boat heeled slightly when close-hauled, with GPS speeds in the mid 7s. Twenty-four hours at that rate, and you could boast a fairly respectable day’s run.

X-Yachts has been building sailboats in Denmark for nearly four decades. Racing has long been in the company’s design DNA, and principal designer Niels Jeppesen has a long list of winners on his resume. But along the way, X-Yachts has also attracted the attention of a wider community of sailors, both for its Xc line of family cruisers and its Xp performance-oriented racer cruisers.

xp 44 yacht

| | The Xp 44’s companionway hatch can be lowered all the way down, locked in place halfway up to prevent down flooding or be raised all the way to close the boat up. |

The Xp 44 comes standard with an aluminum mast and boom, though the boat we sailed had the optional carbon-fiber rig, sporting a full-batten main and 106 percent jib set on a below-deck Profurl furler. Unlike on some of the boats we saw that week, access to the furler, in case of a jam, was excellent. For sailing off the wind, an asymmetrical sail can be set on the optional carbon bowsprit and anchor roller, which this boat had. While the sprit gives the bow a sporty look, we did have to give the hook a little nudge when launching it.

Under way, I found it was easy to move about the cockpit, both between the twin wheels and forward to the open seating area and companionway. A large table with leaves is stored in a compartment beneath the cockpit sole so it’s out of the way when sailing but easily deployed in port. I appreciated the fact that seated at either of the twin wheels, I could reach out and grab an end of the split German-style mainsheet and the control lines for the traveler, which is embedded in the sole from coaming to coaming. On a blustery day, a short-handed helmsman could depower things quickly.

On deck, the optional teak provided excellent nonskid (teak comes standard in the cockpit) and there was no clutter of lines, since the mainsheet is led below deck and the jib sheets are kept tight to the cabin house. My one (minor) gripe would be that the ports in the cabin sides open outward and could snag lines or ankles. Belowdecks, though, they provide lots of ventilation when open.

xp 44 yacht

| |_Belowdecks, the saloon is simple but elegantly finished. The fiddled desktop to starboard can be used as a cocktail table with seats to each side, or can slide aft for use as the nav station. _|

X-Yachts builds 100 to 110 boats a year and its construction methods are top notch. The hull and deck of the 44 are epoxy-infused foam-and-glass sandwiches, reinforced with carbon fiber in high-load areas. A carbon-fiber keel grid is bonded to the hull, as are the hull liner and furniture for added stiffness. The 44 is the first X-Yacht to use the carbon keel grid, which replaces a galvanized steel ring found in other models. The change was made to add strength and reduce weight. Weight savings are also achieved by using foam-cored composites in fabricating some of the furniture. The result is a sailboat that is light, strong and easily driven, but capable of standing to its canvas when conditions kick up. The Xp 44 is a sailor’s boat and the interior reflects this; it’s elegant, but at the same time, simple and functional. White fiberglass panels and light-color upholstery are set off by just enough teak trim to make the cabin seem rich and inviting. There are vented hanging lockers in the twin double aft cabins. A compact but well-outfitted galley sits to port of the companionway stairs, a head and shower (a perfect wet hanging locker) to starboard. Forward of the galley, an L-shaped dinette is big enough to seat a crew but the settee can double as a sea berth. To starboard a long settee can be broken up by a cocktail table or the table can move aft to become the nav station, rendering a second midship sea berth. A generously sized owners’ cabin with head and shower and a hanging locker is forward of the mast.

The boat we sailed was equipped with a 40-horsepower Yanmar engine, saildrive and two-blade Gori prop. Under power the boat backed well and motored smoothly.

The Xp 44 is probably not an entry-level boat. Construction of this caliber and first-rate gear all come at a price. The boat, as we sailed it, delivered to the U.S. East Coast, was north of $500,000. But as Schrader noted, this is likely to be a boat that someone is trading up to, and it would be a buyer who knows what he wants — quality construction and outstanding sailing performance — and who is willing to pay for it.

Turning to his notes, Schrader ticked off his entries in the Xp’s plus column: “Traditional boat using really, really good materials, well executed, fit and finish terrific.”

From a sailor’s perspective, what’s not to love?

Flying overnight from the East Coast of the U.S. to Europe always gives me a through-the-looking-glass sense of being dislocated from time and reality. And so it was when I landed at the Billund airport in central Denmark last September after a hop across the pond from Boston and a layover at Amsterdam’s Shiphol airport. The airport, I was told, was built by and for Lego, whose corporate headquarters are nearby. A Lego airport makes perfect sense. I hadn’t slept a wink and was now, by mid-morning, on my fourth cup of coffee.

I was met by my buddy and host Lars Ostergaard who is with Gori Propellers and immediately swept into his car and driven two hours to a small marina somewhere in west central Denmark. I am sure we talked the whole way, but of what I can’t recall. We found X-Yachts’ CEO Hans Viggaard aboard his XP-44 with his crew Flemming and they were more or less ready to go. They had been in a regatta the day before and had spent a long, amusing evening at the regatta party. They too were on their fourth cups of coffee.

It was a lovely fall afternoon with the promise of a good breeze. We unmoored the 44 from the marina and motored slowly down a narrow channel boarded on both sides by cow pastures and into the arm of a fjord that in turn empties out into the open waters of central Denmark. At one point we passed a herd of cows that was marooned on a small island next to the channel, but they seemed unperturbed when we used them as a turning mark.

Under power the 44 handled easily. The sail drive unit is far enough ahead of the high aspect spade rudder to provide a steady flow of water without any cavitation. In reverse you can maneuver very precisely, while in forward the boat steers like a sports car. The gearshift and throttle lever is mounted below the instrument panel and near your right foot so you can literally operate it with your toes. Once clear of the narrow channel, we gave the engine full throttle and were pleased to see that the 44 has a top speed under power of just over eight knots and a cruising speed of 6.5 knots at 2400 rpms. The feel on the twin wheels is active but not at all hard to control.

We anchored in the island’s lee for lunch in the cockpit. The cockpit table is easily mountable and demountable and stows away neatly under the cockpit floor while sailing or racing so it is not in the way of sheet trimmers and the afterguard. The cockpit has been designed for performance sailing with the twin wheels aft and the primary and secondary winches positioned for active crew work with both working and downwind sails. On both sides, there are good seats for the helmsman and tactician aft of the helm and the main sheet trimmer can sit right in front of the helmsman to play the sheet and traveler. For a cruising couple, you can have the autopilot steer so you can trim sheets from this same seat. The main sheet is double ended and leads beneath the side decks to the mainsheet winches.

After lunch we hoisted sails again and set off for some windward sailing. The XP 44 lives up to its performance bias by sailing very close to the wind and at good speed. With about 28 knots of apparent wind and one reef tied in, we were able to tack through about 85 degrees and could keep her moving at seven knots or better if I avoided slamming into the rolling waves.

The X-44 handled the gusting breeze and steep chop very well. Playing the traveler we were able to keep the boat fairly flat and that in turn helped to build speed. She felt like a thoroughbred leaping fences as she sailed through the waves.

Once we put the 44 through her paces up wind, we cracked off and ran for home. Again, the 44 showed her pedigree as she pegged 10 knots on a broad reach. This boat would be a lot of fun to race and will be a fine performance cruiser for a couple or family that enjoys sailing higher and faster than the rest of the cruising fleet.

SIMPLE ELEGANCE X-Yachts has been building modern, fin keel performance boats since brothers Niels and Lars Jeppesen and their partner Birger Hansen founded the company in 1979. Among their successes on the race course include the world ¾-Ton Cup, the One-Ton Cup and the Two-Ton World Cup. Today, the company builds the XC or cruiser line and the XP performance line to serve both sides of the sailing market.

As noted above, the cockpit is set up for a full racing crew yet it is not stripped out or spare. Teak decks are standard in the cockpit and are offered as an option on the decks. The squared off stern is open to the sea but can be fitted with an optional folding swim platform. Two large lockers are built into the aft end of the cockpit.

The side decks are wide and uncluttered with the chain plates mounted outboard and the genoa tracks running along the cabin sides. The cabin top has a low profile so you can see over it easily from the cockpit and this gives the whole boat a sleek and elegant look.

DESIGN RULES I have always admired the Danish design ethic whether it is in modern furniture, architecture or dinnerware since it emphasizes simplicity, natural ingredients and modern trends.

The interior of the X-44, like all of the X-Yachts, has a natural, woody feel yet is thoroughly modern and functional. The boat has a three cabin layout with two quarter cabins aft and the larger master stateroom forward. The forward cabin has a large double V-berth and its own head. The after cabins are set up to be good double berths but the bunks can be split with lee cloths for offshore work and pipe berths can be added above the bunks so the off watch crew can always sleep to windward.

The interior styling uses white surfaces combined with traditional wood trim to achieve a modern “Bristol Fashion” look that provides the warmth you want in a floating home with the simple elegance you expect from a high end, Scandinavian yacht. Certainly, a family of four or five will fit comfortably aboard the 44 for extended cruising and a racing crew will find it serves their needs better than most boats in the fleet.

In the XP-44, form follows function, as it should, but that form is endowed with a distinct X-Yachts flare that beautifully combines the finest boat building techniques and the latest thinking on performance hull and rig design with a comfortable and modern cruising interior. It’s called the X-Factor.

Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show.

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north.

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

xp 44 yacht

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

xp 44 yacht

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests.

xp 44 yacht

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

xp 44 yacht

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

xp 44 yacht

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

xp 44 yacht

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

xp 44 yacht

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million.

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

xp 44 yacht

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

xp 44 yacht

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

xp 44 yacht

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.
