MIY Yacht Co-Ownership

What is a Yacht Share Network?

2P7A6710RT (1).jpg

There was a time when travel, in any form, was only available to the extremely wealthy. Cars, now commonplace in many of the countries of the world, were reserved for the affluent, air travel only for the elite. Travel by luxury yacht is the one form that has largely stayed in this bracket - and it is no wonder, as it comes with a large amount of hidden costs to be addressed, and is one of the most lavish ways to see the world.

There are ways, however, that this way of travel - or even lifestyle - could be attainable. This article will focus on the most beneficial of these - shared yacht ownership.

What is a Shared Yacht Ownership?

Shared yacht ownership is the new alternative to buying a yacht outright and consists of an agreement among a group of individuals to co-own and share the purchase and maintenance costs of the yacht. Shared yacht ownership - also referred to as yacht co-ownership, fractional yacht ownership and boat or yacht syndication - could be in the form of informal agreement, in which the maintenance burden would generally be split between the owners, or through a professional and dedicated yacht co-ownership company like MIY Yacht.

Fractional yacht ownership is not to be confused with charter or boat timeshare - these models offer their users a limited time aboard the vessel but do not come with the ownership element, and offer no financial return. Infact, while charter may appear more financially attainable in the short term, yacht co-ownership is much more cost effective than long term charter usage.

How Does Fractional Yacht Ownership Work?

The MIY Yacht Co-Ownership model is very simple:

Choose the yacht that best suits your needs from our fleet

Purchase your desired number of shares

Book in your 6 weeks of usage - you can do so up to a year in advance to ensure your dates of choice

At any time you can upgrade your share to include more weeks usage on your yacht, or even purchase shares in other yachts in various destinations

For more information on the MIY Yacht co-ownership model click here .

How Much Does It Cost to Run a Yacht Per Day?

There are various costs associated with running your yacht and daily costs will include:

Crew Salaries

Docking fees

Insurance

General maintenance and repairs

Contingencies

According to Business Insider magazine, the annual costs of running your yacht will equate to about 10% of the initial purchase price. If your yacht is worth £1M, therefore, you can expect your daily running costs to be about £2.7K.

While this may seem like a high figure, in a fractional yacht ownership scheme this cost is significantly reduced and much more financially attainable.

Can a yacht travel around the world?

Absolutely. This is the wonder of the motor yacht lifestyle - you benefit from all the advantages of luxury hotels, with the ability to travel from destination to destination. How far you travel is up to you, and depends only on the amount of time you have booked onboard at any one time  ( but always make sure you have everything you need before you set off, the MIY team can help with this). The brilliance of this model is that you have 6 weeks of onboard usage every single year - not only on your own yacht, but through our ‘yacht swap’ option, our other clients’ vessels can also be at your disposal. Over time therefore, it is possibly the best way to travel the world - with an array of destinations right there on your doorstep.

Is Owning A Yacht Worth It?

Yes, this is such a beautiful and enriching lifestyle, but the type of ownership depends on what you are looking for - if you have the financial means, copious amounts of time to spend aboard your yacht, are open to the challenge of maintaining and repairing your yacht, and are happy to be tied to one particular vessel then sole yacht ownership may be for you. Be sure to do your research into all the hidden costs.

If you want to test the waters in this wonderful lifestyle, then charter may be a suitable option.

For everyone else, there is yacht co-ownership - an investment that provides all the wondrous benefits of yacht ownership at only a fraction of the cost. Unlike charter you can tell your friends it’s your very own yacht, and can enjoy the lifestyle at a lower cost  in the long term. It’s a much more personal experience. And unlike sole yacht ownership, you are not necessarily tied to one vessel in one location, and do not have to bear the full purchase and maintenance costs, as well as taking on the responsibility of organising upkeep.

It is essentially the stress free alternative to owning a yacht which also conveniently comes at a smaller price. All the benefits of yacht ownership continue to apply to this model, and yet the associated hassle that yacht owners face simply do not.

It is clear, therefore, that entering into a yacht share network could be a life changing decision that could provide a wealth of experiences and adventure for you, your family and even your friends. If you would like to find out more about MIY Yacht Co-ownership, the wonders of entering a yacht share network, our fleet and our services then head over to our website here .

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawsuit that names Sean “Diddy” Combs as a co-defendant alleges that his son Christian “King” Combs sexually assaulted a woman working on a yacht chartered by his father.

The suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court says Sean Combs created the circumstances that led to the assault and paid to cover it up afterward. It’s the latest in a series of lawsuits accusing the producer and music mogul of sexual misconduct, and it comes amid a federal sex trafficking investigation that led Homeland Security agents to raid his homes in Los Angeles and Miami last week.

Grace O'Marcaigh, who worked as a crew member and a bartender on the boat, says that in late December 2022, Christian Combs pressured her to drink tequila that she believes was spiked with other drugs. He groped her breasts and genitals and attempted to force her to perform oral sex, the suit alleges.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly, as O’Marcaigh has done. She also consented to being named through her attorneys.

Aaron Dyer, an attorney for Sean and Christian Combs, called the lawsuit “lewd and meritless.”

"We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim," Dyer said in a statement.

Dyer called the investigation that brought last week's raids "nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”

Sean Combs, who chartered the yacht throughout the holidays in 2022, “had full control of the staff and premises” and created circumstances where her assault was not only tolerated but encouraged.

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 at the time, said when Christian Combs, then 24, came aboard late one night, he appeared heavily intoxicated and began giving her inappropriate attention.

She said the two were in a music studio on board the ship, where producer Rodney Jones, who filed his own lawsuit in February, was told to be available around the clock for Sean Combs to work on his next album.

O’Marcaigh said in the suit that Christian Combs was insistent that she take shots of tequila, and she drank out of obligation.

The suit alleges he became increasingly aggressive with her, violently grabbing her arm as she tried to get out of the situation then groping her. The drinks made everything blurry, unusually quickly, the suit says.

Microphones in the studio, where Jones was told to capture everything, recorded their exchange, and the lawsuit includes a transcript where O’Marcaigh demands that Christian Combs stop touching her.

The suit alleges that he later continued the assault in the ship's movie theater, which was used as a spare sleeping area and where she was attempting to find a place to spend the night because the rooms were all taken, before another crew member appeared and he stopped.

O’Marcaigh told the yacht's captain about the assault the following morning, but she alleges that after Combs gave him a large amount of cash the same day, the captain failed to meaningfully investigate or take any action.

The suit says O'Marcaigh was eventually fired in retaliation and has since been unable to find work in the music industry where she had planned to build a career. It says since 2022, she has suffered severe emotional trauma.

The lawsuit seeks damages to be determined at trial.

Christian Combs is also a musical artist whose song “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” with Kodak Black topped Billboard’s Mainstream R&B Hip-Hop charts in 2022. He was at his father's Los Angeles home during last week's searches, during which he and his brother were handcuffed but not arrested.

The producer Jones’ federal lawsuit, filed in February by Tyrone Blackburn, the same attorney as O’Marcaigh's suit, includes allegations that Sean Combs coerced him to solicit prostitutes and pressured him to have sex with them.

Dyer's statement said the newest lawsuit is “filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect from Blackburn.”

He pointed out that U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote criticized Blackburn in a separate lawsuit on Wednesday and referred him to a disciplinary committee for a “pattern of behavior" where he “improperly files cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly.”

Blackburn responded in an email that “a referral is not a sanction” and the statement from Combs' lawyer was an attempt to “deflect and distract.”

“Christian Combs sexually assaulted Ms. O’Marcaigh, and we have it on tape," Blackburn said.

Several lawsuits have brought public scrutiny to the music and business mogul, beginning with a November suit from his former protege and girlfriend, the R&B singer Cassie , which alleged years of sexual abuse, including rape. It was settled the following day .

Combs and his attorneys have denied all of the lawsuits' allegations.

Combs, a three-time Grammy winner and the founder of Bad Boy Records, is among the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades. He turned his hip-hop empire into a broader business empire that includes private-label spirits , fashion, and a TV network .

Markey and Warren rip Steward’s bosses for ‘rot of their greed’ at State House hearing

Senate hearing in boston spotlights abuses in for-profit health care.

Testimony was given by, from left, Dr. Ellana Stinson, Eileen O’Grady, nurse Hannah Drummond and Dr. Donald Berwick.

Steward Health Care chief executive Ralph de la Torre left Massachusetts more than five years ago when he moved the headquarters of his for-profit hospital system from Boston to Dallas.

But his absence was never more noted than on Wednesday, when Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren slammed the embattled Steward chief for not testifying at a Senate panel’s “field hearing” in Boston. The meeting was focused on the precarious state of cash-strapped Steward hospitals and the rise of private equity in health care.

While de la Torre has become a wealthy man, and buyout firm Cerberus Capital Management reaped an $800 million profit from its investment in Steward, the company has missed payments to vendors and is scrambling to sell its eight Massachusetts hospitals, including St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton and Carney Hospital in Dorchester.

“Dr. de la Torre’s chair is as empty as the promises he made,” Markey told a crowded hearing of his subcommittee of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, which convened in the State House on Beacon Hill.

“Cerberus made more than $800 million in profit ,” he said. “Dr. de la Torre is still sailing on his yacht .”

Markey cited de la Torre’s pledge to state regulators and health care leaders in 2010 to upgrade the community hospitals, create a low-cost system, and improve care with a cash infusion from Cerberus.

Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren held a subcommittee hearing on the rise of for-profit health care in the State House Gardner Auditorium.

He said de la Torre and Cerberus “sold themselves as saviors” when they struck a partnership to buy the Massachusetts hospitals in 2010 from their nonprofit operator, Caritas Christi Health Care, promising to strengthen the hospitals and provide quality health care.

“Instead, Dr. de la Torre and Cerberus, like the mythological dog that it is named after that guards the gates of the underworld, trapped their hospitals in financial instability as the rot of their greed spread,” Markey said.

Warren was similarly unsparing, repeatedly calling de la Torre a coward for declining an invitation to testify before the subcommittee in Boston.

“While we hold this hearing,” Warren said, “Dr. de la Torre is hiding out. Shame on Dr. de la Torre. He owes the residents of Massachusetts an explanation for his part in looting Steward hospitals. This refusal to appear at today’s hearing is cowardly.”

A spokesperson for Steward declined to respond to the senators’ criticisms or explain why de la Torre declined the senators’ invitation to take part in the hearing.

The company has previously said it is doing its best to operate within a challenging market for community hospitals, citing factors including relatively low insurance reimbursement rates at such facilities.

Inside the Gardner Auditorium, a panel of health care experts and professionals agreed it was time to place restrictions on private equity firms, like Cerberus, that deploy financial tactics such as heavy borrowing, real estate sale-leasebacks, debt-funded dividends, and the rollup of assets to extract windfall profits from hospitals and other health providers.

“We have allowed American health care to become too much the servant of the profit motive,” said Dr. Donald Berwick, president emeritus of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and former administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services under President Obama.

Markey and Warren are introducing Senate bills seeking to bring tougher oversight, and more transparency and accountability to private equity transactions involving health care providers. But it’s not yet clear how much support the measures can gain in a divided Congress.

Markey’s bill, called the “Health Over Wealth Act,” would provide safeguards for workers and patients and empower regulators to block some private equity and real estate deals. Warren’s bill, the “Stop Wall Street Looting Act,” would eliminate some tax breaks for buyout firms and make them liable for debt run up by their portfolio companies. His staff said he recently field a discussion draft for the bill.

Like the senators, panelists blamed corporate greed and mismanagement for the financial woes that have called into the question the future of Steward and left other hospitals, doctors groups, and fertility and hospice clinics across the country struggling under the weight of debt.

Dr. Ellana Stinson, president of the New England Medical Association, said she worked from 2013 to 2020 as an emergency medicine physician at Steward-run Carney, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, and the former Quincy Hospital, which Steward ultimately closed.

“I began to realize how resources were being dwindled down and pulled from each facility ...” Stinson said. “Not having blood products, respiratory therapy at times, or certain specialty services, [it] no longer felt like I was able to provide safe or quality care. What is happening here in the Commonwealth is happening around the country.”

Private equity ownership of health care providers has increased dramatically over the past two decades. Buyout firms manage about $13.1 trillion in assets now compared to less than $1 trillion in 2004, said Eileen O’Grady, health care research and campaigns director for the Private Equity Stakeholders Project, a nonprofit group.

“Hospitals owned by Steward Health Care are facing an existential threat,” O’Grady told the subcommittee, citing the backing of Cerberus, which cashed out of its investment in 2021. “The experience of Steward is unfortunately not unique. There have been many stories of private equity firms looting health care companies at the cost of patient care.”

Steward’s financial crisis has prompted lawsuits from suppliers and the loss of leased medical equipment. Last October, a woman died after giving birth at St. Elizabeth’s , where a vital device called an embolism coil had been repossessed by creditors.

A subcommittee hearing on the rise of for-profit health care at the State House was filled with spectators.

The public, Warren said, needs accountability for what went wrong at Steward.

“And law enforcement authorities should carefully review every aspect of this fiasco,” she said. “We also need to change the law. Private equity should not be allowed to loot one business after another.”

In February, Steward obtained new loans from its landlord, Medical Properties Trust, and other creditors as part of a plan that depended on selling assets such as its physician network. Other hospital operators in Massachusetts are also in the running to take over Steward facilities .

Governor Maura Healey and other politicians have called for Steward to leave the state.

Steward last week struck a deal to sell its nationwide physician network to insurance giant UnitedHealth’s Optum unit. The companies haven’t disclosed a purchase price.

Warren sounded a note of skepticism while discussing the proposed deal during Wednesday’s hearing.

“Optum may be willing to pay Steward hundreds of millions of dollars, but the deal provides no guarantee that the hospitals would stay open,” Warren said. “None.”

The sale will be reviewed closely in Massachusetts, where policy makers have called on Steward to plow the proceeds into its struggling hospitals and to prevent closures.

Lawsuit naming Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs as co-defendant alleges his son sexually assaulted woman on yacht
