PRELIMINARY REGATTAS

The journey to the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona begins with the Preliminary Regattas that will serve as warm-up races ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series). The first preliminary regatta was held in Vilanova i La Geltrú from 14th to 17th September 2023. The teams then headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the America's Cup Preliminary Regatta Jeddah, presented by NEOM between 29th November to 2nd December 2023. The third and last preliminary regatta will be held in August 2024 in Barcelona. The first two regattas were raced in the strict one-design AC40s – the world’s newest and most exciting foiling class with top speeds touching 50 knots and perhaps beyond. Looking forward to 2024, we will see the final preliminary regatta in Barcelona where all the America’s Cup teams will race in their new AC75s for the very first time. The race for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona is well and truly on.

VILANOVA i LA GELTRÚ: 14–17 SEPTEMBER 2023

Vilanova i La Geltrú is set to welcome the America’s Cup world with the announcement of the first preliminary regatta to be held in the beautiful seaside city some 45 kilometres to the west of Barcelona.

In the 19th century, Vilanova i La Geltrú was fondly known as ‘Havana Xica’ or ‘Little Havana’, and today it is one of the country's leading capitals of popular and traditional culture. Els Tres Tombs and the town's carnival, declared a Heritage Festival of National Interest, are just some of the events that have made the capital of El Garraf a must-see destination on the Spanish coastline. The splendid seafront promenade, where colonial-style buildings live in harmony with fishermen's houses, its Rambla, the city's social and retail hub, its wide range of fish and seafood culinary offerings and the famous xató dish mark Vilanova i La Geltrú as one of the jewels of not only the region of Catalonia but all of Spain.

JEDDAH: 29 NOVEMBER – 2 DECEMBER 2023

Jeddah, set on the Red Sea and with a bustling port and busy city centre is regarded as one of the most lavish ports in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The city has a rich heritage fusing the old and the new with its UNESCO-listed historic centre Al Balad, often referred to as the gateway to Mecca, combining with soaring modern architecture and five star luxury around the Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina. The picturesque Jeddah Waterfront offers the perfect vista onto the Red Sea where visitors can relax, enjoy the breath-taking views and discover the famous Al Rahma mosque, otherwise known as the ‘Floating Mosque.’

Often referred to as the ‘Mermaid of the Red Sea,’ the city’s motto is: ‘Jeddah is Different’ reflecting the truly diverse and cosmopolitan nature of the city, which features spectacular international events like the Red Sea International Film Festival and sporting events encompassing Formula 1™, football, golf, athletics, cricket, basketball, boxing and equestrian. Visiting Jeddah, you get to truly appreciate the distinct vibe of the city. It is a lively, progressive and interesting destination that offers much with a rich history and historical significance.

BARCELONA: 22–25 AUGUST 2024

The final preliminary regatta will be held in Barcelona in August 2024. The America’s Cup teams will race on their new AC75s for the first time, and the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, will line up against the Challenger syndicates offering the first indication of who to watch in the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series).

All of the teams entered in the Louis Vuitton 37 th America’s Cup in Barcelona 2024 are fielding teams with representation from the Defenders, Emirates Team New Zealand, the Challenger of Record INEOS Britannia and the Challengers: Alinghi Red Bull Racing, NYYC American Magic, Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli and Orient Express Racing Team.

If the first Preliminary Regatta in Vilanova i La Geltrú is anything to go by, then NYYC American Magic and Emirates Team New Zealand, the Defender of the America’s Cup, will be the teams that everyone will be benchmarking themselves against. 

The America's Cup Preliminary Regatta Jeddah, presented by NEOM in Saudi Arabia, saw the top sailors from the America’s Cup teams compete against each other in equally matched AC40 monohull foilers again. The impressive sailing conditions on the Red Sea provided a world-class sailing event with Emirates Team New Zealand leading the scoreboard and taking away the win at the final match race against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

WHAT BOATS: AC40 & AC75

For the first two Preliminary Regattas in 2023, racing will be conducted in the team’s AC40 in a very strict one-design set-up. The boat, its controls, sails, foils and mechanisms will all be standardised, so the emphasis is firmly on race-craft, positioning and foiling technique.

Each team will consist of four sailors with two helms steering from the forward ‘pod’ and two crew members responsible for sail and foil trim sitting in the aft pods. All control systems are battery-operated. The racing itself will start with fleet racing flights to determine the top two teams who will then proceed on to a final match race (one-on-one) to decide the spoils of victory.

The third and last preliminary regattas in 2024 will be raced on the new AC75s a step on from what we saw during the 36th America's Cup in Auckland in 2021. The foils will be larger, the boats will be lighter and, onboard, the electronics and software systems will be vastly upgraded. The number of crew has been reduced to 8 sailors, which means that the cyclors, introduced by Emirates Team New Zealand in 2017, may return to the game.

HOW TO WATCH

Racing will be held to ensure the maximum opportunity for spectators to see the AC40s in action from the shoreside at both Vilanova i La Geltrú and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2023. For the Preliminary Regatta in Barcelona scheduled for August 2024, the racecourse for the AC75 event will be the America’s Cup race course as defined in the Protocol and situated just metres off the La Barcelonetta beachfront and all along towards Port Olímpic.

HOW TO FOLLOW

The eyes of the world were on the beautiful town of Vilanova i la Geltrú as the first regatta on the journey to the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup in Barcelona was held in September 2023, and we followed the fleet to their second stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in November 2023. 

All racing will be broadcast free-to-air through a dedicated America’s Cup television production. The regattas will offer the world a first glimpse of what can be expected when the UniCredit Youth & Puig Women’s America’s Cup begin in earnest in September and October 2024 in Barcelona as well as the start to the Louis Vuitton Cup (Challenger Selection Series). The Preliminary Regattas will be the first time the AC40 fleet will race each other over fleet and match racing courses, and the AC75s will have their first official racing in the Preliminary Regatta Barcelona.

J Class World Championship returns to America's Cup 2024

The   J Class are set to reunite for the 37th America’s Cup as organisers invite the fleet to race in a J Class World Championship in Barcelona between 7-11 October, 2024.

Comprised of three refitted original yachts and six new yachts built to original hull lines from the 1930s, there are currently nine J Class yachts active worldwide. The fleet includes Endeavour , Topaz , Ranger , Svea , Velsheda , Shamrock V , Rainbow , Hanuman and Lionheart , some of which raced in the original America's Cup in the 1930s.

Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events said: "The J-Class are integral to the history, legend and fascination of the America’s Cup. Seeing those boats being raced just off the Barcelona waterfront will be a spectacle for everyone on the water or watching from the shoreline – we cannot wait to see them in action".

Stuart Childerley, Class Secretary of the J Class, added: "We are extremely grateful to Grant and his team for smoothing the passage to be included in the America’s Cup regatta where the DNA of our fleet essentially lies, and we look forward to playing a central part in the programme both on and off the water. The boats will arrive to Port Vell and be situated right in the heart of the superyacht basin giving spectators a fantastic opportunity to see these historic yachts up close.”

The Class Association said it is seeking a commitment from as many J Class owners as possible for the 2024 event, with five confirmed to date.

America’s Cup 2024 dates confirmed

Racing in the 2024 America's Cup match will take place in Barcelona, Spain in mid-October, with a calendar for racing now released

Despite confirmation that the 37th America’s Cup would be raced in Barcelona back in March 2022, the specific dates in which the event would take place have only been revealed today, Wednesday 30th November 2022, with racing due to start on Saturday 12th October 2024.

We knew the event would need to take place at the tail end of the year in order to avoid clashing with the Olympic Games, which will take place in the summer of 2024 in France and the America’s Cup Event Authority had stated an intention to race in the September-October window, which offers a decent range of weather, with wind speeds usually around the 9-15 knot mark.

Racing in the 37th America’s Cup Match itself, which is a best of 13 (first to seven) format will start on Saturday 12th October with two races scheduled, followed by a further two races on Sunday 13th October 2024.

Racing will then pause for two days – at the discretion of the Regatta Director and after consultation with both the Defender and the Challenger – and depending on conditions, both of these days could be used to complete two races a day. The schedule as it stands, without the use of the Monday or Tuesday, would recommence on Wednesday 16th October 2024 for one race (race 5) in the Match followed by the final of the Women’s America’s Cup, which has now also been confirmed.

The Women’s America’s Cup Regatta Final will take place straight after Race 5 on October 16th 2024, with a stated aim to provide the women’s event significant coverage and profile.

Thursday 17th October is officially not scheduled for America’s Cup racing but again, subject to the Regatta Director’s discretion and agreement with the competitors, could be allocated for two further races depending on conditions, whilst Friday 18th October 2024 is officially marked as a ‘Spare Day’ for up to two more races. Two races per day are also scheduled for Saturday 19th October and Sunday 20th October 2024, if required.

As with the last America’s Cup in New Zealand in 2021, the Event Authority hopes to have racing concluded over a weekend (19th/20th October 2024), however the schedule does allow for racing to continue into the following week from the 21st October 2024 through to the 27th October 2024, on reserve days if required.

Speaking about the format announcement, Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events Limited commented: “We are excited to confirm the dates determining the Match racing period and our huge thanks go to the Capitán Marítimo and the Port of Barcelona authority who have been so pro-active and accommodative throughout the process. This is a significant event to plan for, with safety concerns at the top of the list for both spectators and competitors.

“I think the result is going to be something pretty spectacular with racing taking place in front of the beach, along the coast from the main port entrance right along the coast, past the Port Olímpic and out further east, offering a fantastic viewing opportunity for the public to see these remarkable boats at full pace.”

The announcement of these event dates has been on the cards for some time, with the America’s Cup protocol stating that: The precise dates determining the Match Racing Period and the race schedule shall be announced by ACE on or before 30 November 2022 .

Dates for the Women’s and Youth America’s Cup series (which will take place in AC40s) have yet to be finalised.

It is, however, somewhat disappointing to see only the dates for the America’s Cup match itself and the final of the Women’s America’s Cup final announced, with the Challenger Selection Series (the competition which decides which team will face Cup Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup match) still without firm dates. And it is still unclear when the rest of the Women’s America’s Cup will take place or, indeed, the Youth America’s Cup .

In order to come up with the racing area and dates for Cup racing, an agreement needed to be reached with Barcelona’s Capitán Marítimo to create a spectator area to the south of the City along Barcelona’s beachfront.

Additionally, a permanent exclusion zone for the duration of the racing has been agreed to ensure safety for both the competitors and the expected spectator boats that will take the opportunity to see the AC75s and AC40s at close range.

Although this latest announcement from the America’s Cup Event Authority states that the racing area for the Challenger Selection Series and the America’s Cup have both been confirmed in the same location, that there are not yet dates for the Selection Series implies there may still be some further conversations to be had about the exclusion zones for that, the Women’s America’s Cup series and the Youth America’s Cup too.

The America's Cup

The Americas Cup is considered the oldest active trophy in international sport, having been first contested in 1851. It is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious sailing events in the world, attracting the best sailors and teams from around the globe. The race has a rich history of innovation, with competing teams constantly pushing the boundaries of sailing technology. Participating in our team building regattas, which are developed with the same rules and course as the Americas Cup, gives sailors a chance to experience the thrill and challenge of this iconic event and learn more about its storied history and significance in the world of sailing

Brief History

The Americas Cup has a long and storied history dating back to 1851, when the schooner America won a race around the Isle of Wight in England. The victory earned America the right to challenge other countries to races for the cup, which was then renamed the "Americas Cup". Since then, the cup has been contested by sailing teams from around the world, with the winner earning the right to defend the trophy in the next race.

Over the years, the Americas Cup has seen many changes and innovations, from the introduction of new rules to the development of cutting-edge sailboats. In recent years, the competition has been dominated by teams from the United States and New Zealand, with Emirates Team New Zealand winning the most recent edition of the cup in 2021.

The 37th edition - The AC75 boat

The AC75 is the latest class of boat designed specifically for the America's Cup, and it will be used in the upcoming edition of the event in Barcelona. The AC75 is a foiling monohull, which means that it has a single hull and is capable of lifting out of the water at high speeds using hydrofoils. The boat is approximately 75 feet long and has a crew of 11 sailors. The AC75 features advanced design and construction techniques, including high-tech materials like carbon fiber, which make the boat lightweight, yet incredibly strong and durable. The design of the AC75 boats is highly competitive, with each team designing and building its own boat within a set of class rules. This means that the boats will vary in their specific design features, such as the shape of the hull, the size and shape of the foils, and the configuration of the sails. The AC75 boats are some of the most advanced and sophisticated sailing vessels in the world, and they are sure to provide an exciting and thrilling spectacle for sailors and sailing enthusiasts alike during the next America's Cup in Barcelona.

The foil technology

The AC75 sailboat used in the next America's Cup in Barcelona features innovative foil technology that enables the boat to achieve higher speeds and better performance. The boat uses a "T-foil" design, which means the foils on the boat extend from the bottom of the hull and are shaped like a T. These T-foils are designed to generate lift and reduce drag by reducing the surface area of the boat that is in contact with the water. The foils are made from a carbon fiber composite material, which is both lightweight and incredibly strong.

The AC75's foil technology is also unique in that it is controlled by a complex hydraulic system that allows the sailors to adjust the angle and position of the foils on the fly. This system allows the boat to adapt to changing conditions and optimize the lift and drag of the foils for maximum speed and maneuverability. Additionally, the boat features a unique "flap" system on the trailing edge of the foils that further enhances performance by providing additional lift and control. Overall, the AC75's foil technology and system represent a significant leap forward in sailboat design and promise to make the next America's Cup in Barcelona an exciting and highly competitive event.

Defender and Challenger

In the America's Cup, the defender is the team that won the previous edition of the regatta, and their role is to defend their title against the challenger teams. The challenger teams are selected through a series of races called the Challenger Selection Series, which is held before the America's Cup Match. The Challenger Selection Series involves several rounds of elimination matches between the challenger teams until only one challenger remains. The remaining challenger team then advances to the America's Cup Match to compete against the defender for the title. The America's Cup Match is a best-of series of races, typically held over several days, and the first team to reach a predetermined number of wins is declared the winner and becomes the new defender for the next edition of the regatta.

Course and basic rules

The America's Cup regatta races are contested on a course that is set up as a windward-leeward racecourse. The course consists of a series of marks or buoys that the boats must round in a specific order. The starting line is set up between two boats that are anchored at either end of the line, and the boats must stay behind the line until the start signal is given. Once the race begins, the boats sail upwind towards the first mark, and then round it and sail back downwind towards the next mark. This process is repeated until the boats have completed the required number of laps and crossed the finish line.

The basic rules applied in the America's Cup regatta races are governed by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Racing Rules of Sailing. These rules govern things like right of way, penalties, and other aspects of the race. One important rule is the "right-of-way" rule, which states that the boat with the wind coming from its starboard side has right of way over the boat with the wind coming from its port side. This means that boats must avoid colliding with each other and must give way to other boats when necessary.

Another important rule is the "penalty" rule, which states that boats must perform a penalty turn if they break a rule. A penalty turn involves sailing around a mark or buoy in the opposite direction from the other boats, which can be costly in terms of time and distance. These rules, along with others, help to ensure fair and competitive racing in the America's Cup regattas, and make for exciting and dynamic races that test the skills and abilities of the sailors and their boats.

Kraken win 2nd regatta, stay perfect

Kraken continued its perfect start to the 2024 National Championship Series when the TT Powerboat Association’s second regatta was held at the TT Yacht Club, Glencoe on Sunday.

Kraken, competing in the Spec class, made it two wins from as many races this season. Kraken ended the second regatta with 860 points, following up the regatta one win on February 25.

S-Kapade ended second in the Spec class with 610 points, and Pandemic finished third with 605 points. There were a limited number of participants in the other classes as a few boats pulled out of the event mainly due to mechanical issues. Devil’s Advocate and John Wick could not compete in the 60 mph class, and Ketch This and Jesus is Coming also had to watch from the sidelines.

Legendary TT Great Race boat Mr Solo won the 130-mile-per-hour (mph) class with 620 points. The 95 mph class title went to Tyrant, Extreme Measures copped the 70 mph category, and Raw Knots won the 60 mph class.

All the boats use the regatta races as preparation for the Great Race, held every August. This year it will be held on August 17.

The races in the lead-up to the Great Race help the racers of the boats determine what adjustments need to be made to their vessels before Great Race.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

CAPTAIN - Harry Fotopoulos Captain Harry is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy and holds a Captain Class A’ Diploma. He also holds a Canadian Commercial Pilot license class B, sailing and speedboat license. He has over 15 years of experience onboard many types of Charter Yachts. He holds Certificates in GMDSS, Fire Fighting & First Aid, Personal Safety, Life Saving, and Ship Security. He has a great knowledge of the Greek islands and will navigate guests to remarkable destinations. During his one season on board he showed great leadership skills and received positive feedback from all guests. He is calm yet very outgoing and speaks very good English. DECKHAND - Konstantinos Santas CHIEF STEWARDESS - Mirella Davint Mirella has 8+ years of experience as a stewardess onboard charter and private yachts. She has a very pleasant personality and she aims to accommodate her guests to the fullest. Comments received from previous guests are memorable. This will be Mirella’s eighth season onboard. Mirella speaks English and she is 38 years old. ENGINEER - Stelios Mandos Stelios holds an Engineer Class B’ Diploma from the Greek Merchant Marine Academy as well as a Sailor’s License. He has over 15 years of experience onboard Ocean-Going Vessels and Charter Yachts. His hobbies include spearfishing and sailing. He speaks good English. Stelios is 45 years old, married with two children. CHEF - Thanasis Kiritsis Thanasis is 39 years old and has worked as a chef for more than 20 years in numerous hotels restaurants, yachts and resorts including owning his own pastry shop / bakery for 5 years. Thanasis looks forward to welcoming his guests on board and introducing them to his culinary world. He speaks good English and Greek. He is a young chef full of energy, skills and passion towards his job. We are confident that he will serve his guests unforgettable flavors. ASSISTANT STEWARDESS - Anastasia Yurash Anastasia is 31 years old and has been in the yachting industry since 2021. Her working experience includes 7 years as a housekeeper and assistant stewardess. Anastasia speaks very good English. One of Anastasia’s strongest attributes is her appetite for work. She is also very sociable, welcoming and looks forward to having guests on board S/Y Amadeus. Her hobbies include Latin dancing, snowboard and yoga.

A General Description of Sailing Yacht AMADEUS

AMADEUS was previously registered as project/yacht name Amadeus 1er. This 33 metre (109 ft) luxury yacht was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1991. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS is a well proportioned superyacht. The yacht is a modern sloop with a cutter rig. The naval architecture office whom authored the design work on this ship was Philippe Briand. Luxury yacht AMADEUS is a quality yacht that is able to accommodate as many as 12 guests on board and has a total of 5 crew members.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS was built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard .The yacht features superb sailing characteristics which are complimented by her spacious interior and abundant deck space. Sailing sloop AMADEUS can accommodate 10 passengers in five cabins. With one large master stateroom and four additional cabins which are all air conditioned and have en suite bathrooms. She also has two separate salons and a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered with seating. The fore deck has an unique pool on deck and swimming in the sea is made accessible by a large swim aft platform.

The Construction & Naval Architecture relating to Luxury Yacht AMADEUS

Philippe Briand was the naval architect firm involved in the formal nautical design work for AMADEUS. Also the company Philippe Briand skillfully collaborated on this undertaking. In 1991 she was actually launched to triumph in Marans and following sea trials and final completion was afterwards passed on to the yacht owner. Dynamique Yachts completed their new build sailing yacht in France. A reasonable proportion is brought about with a maximum beam (width) of 7.5 metres / 24.6 feet. With a 3.6m (11.8ft) draught (maximum depth) she is reasonably deep. The material composite was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure above deck is built with the use of composite. Over the deck of AMADEUS she is 32.7 (107.3 ft) in length. In 2004 extra refitting and modernisation was also finished.

Engines & Speed For S/Y AMADEUS:

She is driven by twin screw propellers. The main engine of the ship gives 375 horse power (or 276 kilowatts). She is equiped with 2 engines. The combined thrust for the boat is therefore 750 HP / 552 KW.

Bestowing bedding for a maximum of 12 yacht guests sleeping aboard, the AMADEUS accommodates them in style. Normally the vessel requires approximately 5 professional crewmembers to run.

Her master cabin features a walk around king bed, desk/vanity, and en-suite bathroom. Additionally, there are two guest cabins each with a queen bed convertible to two twins, and two guest cabins each with a queen bed and twin bed. Each guest cabin has an en-suite.

Her main salon has a spacious, contoured conversational area, along with a large, flatscreen T.V. The aft deck features al fresco dining with Bimini top. Up on deck there are sun pads and a splash pool for you and your guests to enjoy.

Watersports offered include a 15 foot tender with 75hp engine, water skis for adults and children, tube, wakeboard, kayak, fishing gear, snorkeling gear, and rendezvous diving.

Sailing yacht AMADEUS is a stunning 110 ft yacht available for charter in Greece. With a clean, spacious teak deck and a unique outdoor saloon that can seat up to 12 guests across two tables, it’s the perfect place for outdoor dining and entertainment. The deck saloon can also be enclosed with a special canopy and roll-up windows, making it suitable for use in all weather conditions. At the front of the boat, there’s a splash pool and sunbathing area with a removable awning for shade.

Inside the boat, a staircase from the cockpit leads to a well-lit and roomy saloon area with plenty of seating, including a formal dining area, bar, LCD TV, entertainment center, iPod dock station, and Playstation. Sailing Yacht AMADEUS can accommodate 10-12 guests in five large cabins, including a full-width master stateroom and two double cabins, each with an extra single bed. The two twin cabins can also be converted to doubles upon request, making her the only sailboat on the Greek market with five double beds.

To add to the fun, sailing yacht AMADEUS also comes with a range of water toys, including adult and children’s water skis, tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod, and snorkeling gear. She was built by Dynamique Yachts in 1996 and underwent a refit in 2014/2018.

Accomodation is offered for 10 -12 guests in 5 spacious cabins: Master cabin forward features a double bed, vanity unit and generous storage facilities, as well as audio/visual entertainment. The en-suite includess a large bath tub, shower and separate WC. Two identical double cabins with additional single bunks situated forward. Two identical double cabins situated aft which can be convertible to twins. (Total 5 double beds) All cabins with en suite facilities and audio/visual entertainment.

A professional crew of 5-6 members are accommodated in separate quarters.

Charter the AMADEUS

AMADEUS is a 110-foot sailing yacht that can accommodate ten to twelve passengers in five staterooms as follows: a spacious Owner’s stateroom with a double bed, a vanity and an entertainment unit including TV, DVD and music system; two cabins with a double bed and an additional single bed; two cabins with two twin beds each. All staterooms have en suite bathrooms, a TV, DVD and CD player. There are two separate salons onboard as well as a full dining room. The aft deck is fully covered and has seating for all guests to dine in the open air. Forward of the cockpit is a lovely cushioned area for sunning and an unusual pool is found in the fore of the yacht. Swimming in the sea is made accessible by the large swim aft platform.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

The countdown is on for the The America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta, presented by NEOM with the Red Sea city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia getting ready to host the world’s finest foiling sailors all eager to sail in the pristine waters from the 29th of November through to the 2nd of December 2023.

Setting Sail in Jeddah: Countdown to The America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta Presented by NEOM

Hosted by the fabulous Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina, truly one of the finest yacht clubs in the world, racing will once again be in the pure one-design AC40 class – the most exciting new foiling fleet on the planet. The format will see the competing teams contest eight fleet races, starting on Thursday 30 th  November before the top two teams will contest a winner-takes-all one-on-one Match Race to be crowned as champions and give the winning team an incredible boost going into 2024 when Barcelona will host the 37 th  America’s Cup for real. Let’s look at the possible and probable line-ups team by team:

Emirates Team New Zealand

Winning is a habit that the Kiwis are accustomed to and sewn into their DNA, so the disappointment around the team’s one point loss at the first Preliminary Regatta back in September in Vilanova, is hard to disguise. The team’s summer training in Barcelona was angled predominantly towards the AC75 and the various testing of full-scale componentry but several recorded sessions were conducted on their pure one-design AC40 to keep their eye in. We are unlikely to see any crew changes with Peter Burling, Nathan Outteridge, Blair Tuke and Andy Maloney being a very tight and consistent unit, but they will have the ever-present option of Josh Junior to call on if required. The team that everyone is watching on the start-line and around the racecourse, there’s a sense of unfinished business for the Kiwis who will want to round off a great year in style.

INEOS Britannia

The British have worked hard since Vilanova to improve their outright reliability in the AC40 and definitely feel that they have made steps forward. A solid block of AC40 training and a first-class session on the team’s repaired LEQ12 has brought some confidence back into the team and they will be looking to post a much-improved result in Jeddah. Concentration on boat-handling, sail trim and manoeuvre technique sees the team quietly confident ahead of the regatta and Sir Ben Ainslie, the most decorated Olympic sailor of all time, can never be counted out. Ainslie and Giles Scott are almost certain to helm but Dylan Fletcher-Scott is ready to step in if required and has been fast in training. The British have a wealth of talent to select on the trimming front with Leigh McMillan and Bleddyn Mon, the crew in Vilanova, possible ahead of Luke Parkinson and Iain Jensen. Getting the balance and the weight limit right is key here but the British will have the hammer down in Jeddah and could surprise.

NYYC American Magic

The winners at Vilanova, American Magic have talent to burn in all departments and have found speed in their AC40 having spent all summer two-boat foil and aero testing in their two LEQ12 moded AC40s ‘America’ and ‘Magic.’ A recent re-commission of their AC75 ‘Patriot’ in Barcelona has switched focus for the team as they test systems controls at full scale but with Tom Slingsby and Paul Goodison likely to be the helming duo, depending on Tom’s family commitments as his wife is due to give birth soon, they are a talented partnership with no less than five International Moth world championships between them. The team has depth in the helming department and either Lucas Calabrese or young superstar Harry Melges IV could easily step in if required. Trim is very likely to be Riley Gibbs and Michael Menninger who have clicked well with the helms and regularly find beautiful trim around the course. The team to watch.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing

The first team to sail AC40s in Jeddah, the Swiss had a thrilling training block at the beginning of November where they encountered the whole gambit of conditions that the Red Sea can offer. In two-boat training they looked imperious and put in long afternoons, regularly sailing through to dusk with quick-fire races at a very high intensity. Arnaud Psarofaghis and Maxime Bachelin are the likely starting helms although the fast-driving Nico Charbonnier is waiting in the wings if needed. Bryan Mettraux and Yves Detrey are the probable trim team and sailed in Vilanova, but Nicolas Rolaz is available should he be required. Expect Alinghi Red Bull Racing to light up the racecourse with great boat-handling and technique. This is a team that will win races, for sure, and will be eyeing the podium.

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

Perhaps the most fascinating of the AC40 fleet, the Italians have a helming conundrum to solve with four ultra-talented helms vying for the wheels. The senior duo of Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni are the probable helms, but Marco Gradoni and Ruggero Tita were doing starting practice and race-training shadow-boxing at a very high intensity at the end of the summer training block in Barcelona and could well be given the opportunity. If so, it would throw a whole new dimension into the regatta as Gradoni and Tita are un-tested at this level but have sailing CVs to die for. Trim will be a three-way choice between Umberto Molineris, Vittorio Bissaro and Andrea Tesei with any combination well-suited to the one-design requirements of the AC40. Super talented team all round, they will be eyeing race wins and a podium finish.

Orient Express Racing Team

After winning the first ever official race in the AC40 class in Vilanova, Orient Express Racing Team from France are the dark horses in Jeddah. In Quentin Delapierre and Kevin Peponnet on helming duties, they have serious sailing skill coursing through their veins and in Vilanova they worked out early that a port tack start could minimise the number of tacks upwind and give them an edge. Time after time they headed out to the starboard boundary and more often than not, it paid. Time training in Barcelona in the AC40 in strict one-design and extensive simulator training, means that have flown under the radar in the lead up to this regatta but recon snippets taken by other teams has shown them to be nailing their boat-handling and pushing on. Hard to bet against them again performing well in flashes but do they have enough to take the fight to the big teams? Time will tell. 

For fans and spectators in Jeddah, The America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta, presented by NEOM, will be the most accessible sporting contest with Jeddah’s famous ‘Corniche’ playing host to the Race Village and Fan Zone to catch all the action on jumbo screens in real-time whilst enjoying the various activations and restaurant pop-up facilities. The Race Village is open to the public at no cost, with all the racing streamed on the big screens and entertainment on the main stage.

Furthermore, spectators will be able to watch the thrilling action right up along the Corniche, as the AC40’s pass by the shore at speeds of up to 100 kph, flying above the surface of the water on foils. The racing is tactical and close with all the boats equalised to ensure that the most consistent and skilful team wins and with the America’s Cup event now under a year away, every team wants to put in a top performance. Nobody wants to be last and in the America’s Cup where, famously, “There is no second,” this is a chance for the sailors to stamp their mark on the event and set the tone for the year ahead.

With the America’s Cup coming to Jeddah and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, it is an important activation for the Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina facility which is one of the most active clubs in the world with a youth programme that encourages some 40 children a day to come and try sailing. To date over 2000 children have passed through the Jeddah Yacht Club Academy system and with near-perfect weather for sailing on a daily basis, it is a programme that is getting widespread attention in the Kingdom.

We have built a world class training centre in Jeddah that will inspire people new to the sport to come and try it and will provide elite sailors with the best opportunity to develop their competitive skills. We want as many people as possible to enjoy water sports – young and old, newcomers and elite alike – and we have built a centre that is inspirational.”

Grant Dalton, CEO of America’s Cup Events, visited the yacht club in October and was impressed with what he saw, saying: “The Jeddah Yacht Club and Marina facility is undeniably one of the finest clubs in the world and we are really excited to be bringing the America’s Cup Preliminary Regatta, presented by NEOM, to the Kingdom. Our motivation is to inspire and assist the Jeddah Yacht Club and the Saudi Sailing Federation, in their mission to make the sport of sailing accessible to all and their academy is a lesson in how to do it right. We are very grateful to the yacht club for their support, and we look forward to sailing on the Red Sea in the perfect conditions that the region offers and inspiring generations of young Saudi sailors to participate in the sport.”

All the racing will be shown free-to-air globally on YouTube whilst locally the Saudi Sports Channel will also be streaming the races live on MBC’s Shahid platform. Entry to the Fan Zone and Race Village is also free and tickets can be obtained through the America’s Cup website.

Nato supports Bosnia’s territorial integrity and is concerned by “malign foreign interference,” including by Russia , in the volatile Balkans region that went through a devastating war in the 1990s, Nato’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg , has said.

Sarajevo is the first stop on Stoltenberg’s tour of western Balkan countries that will also include Kosovo, Serbia and North Macedonia, the Associated Press reports.

“The Allies strongly support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina,” Stoltenberg told reporters. “We are concerned by the secessionist and divisive rhetoric as well as malign foreign interference, including Russia.”

There are widespread fears that Russia is trying to destabilise Bosnia and the rest of the region and shift at least some world attention from its war in Ukraine .

The Ukrainian army said it had pushed back Russian forces “three to eight kilometres” from the banks of the Dnipro River, which if confirmed would be the first meaningful advance by Kyiv’s forces months into a disappointing counteroffensive . Ukrainian and Russian forces have been entrenched on opposite sides of the vast waterway in the southern Kherson region for more than a year, after Russia withdrew its troops from the western bank last November.

A Ukrainian teenager who was taken to Russia from the occupied city of Mariupol during the war and prevented from leaving earlier this year has returned to Ukraine . Bohdan Yermokhin, who turned 18 on Sunday, appealed to Zelenskiy this month to help bring him back to Ukraine. “I believed I would be in Ukraine, but not on this day,” Yermokhin told Reuters while eating at a petrol station after crossing the border.

About 3,000 mostly Ukrainian trucks, including those carrying fuel and humanitarian aid, were stuck on the Polish side of the border on Sunday due to a more than 10-day blockade by Polish truckers, Ukrainian authorities said . Polish truckers earlier this month blocked roads to three border crossings with Ukraine to protest against what they see as government inaction over a loss of business to foreign competitors since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Air defence units in Moscow intercepted a drone targeting the city late Sunday, mayor Sergei Sobyanin said . Sobyanin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said units in the Elektrostal district in the capital’s east had intercepted the drone. No casualties or damage were initially reported. Air defences had also thwarted a drone attack on the Russian capital overnight to Sunday, authorities said earlier.

Russia launched 20 Iranian-made Shahed drones targeting Kyiv and the Cherkasy and Poltava regions overnight into Sunday, the Ukrainian military said, of which 15 were shot down . The overnight strikes on Kyiv were the second attack on the Ukrainian capital in 48 hours, said the city’s military administration spokesperson, Serhii Popko.

Five people including a three-year-old girl were injured in Russian artillery shelling of Kherson on Sunday morning, the Ukrainian interior minister, Ihor Klymenko , said . “All of them sustained shrapnel wounds. The child and the grandmother were walking in the yard. Enemy artillery hit them near the entrance,” Klymenko said on the Telegram messaging app.

The pro-war Russian nationalist Igor Girkin , who is in custody awaiting trial for inciting extremism, said he wanted to run for president even though he understood the March election would be a “sham” with the winner already clear . Girkin, who is also known by the alias Igor Strelkov, has repeatedly said Russia faces revolution and even civil war unless President Vladimir Putin’s military top brass fight the war in Ukraine more effectively. A former Federal Security Service (FSB) officer who helped Russia to annex Crimea in 2014 and then to organise pro-Russian militias in eastern Ukraine, Girkin said before his arrest that he and his supporters were entering politics.

The Kremlin, facing the prospect of a European Union ban on imports of Russian diamonds, said on Monday that EU sanctions tended to have a “boomerang effect” on those who applied them, Reuters reports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov was commenting on a proposed EU ban on diamond imports from Russia as part of a new sanctions package against Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine .

Russia is the world’s biggest producer of rough diamonds by volume. Peskov told reporters such a move had been anticipated for a long time, but was likely to backfire.

“As a rule, it turns out that a boomerang effect is partially triggered: the interests of the Europeans themselves suffer. So far, we have been able to find ways to minimise the negative consequences of sanctions,” he said.

EU diplomatic sources said last week the proposal under discussion was to ban direct diamond imports from Russia from 1 January and from March to implement a traceability mechanism that would prevent imports of Russian gems processed in third countries.

The Kremlin said on Monday that president Vladimir Putin will set out Russia’s view of what it sees as the “deeply unstable world situation” when he addresses an upcoming virtual G20 summit.

Russian state TV presenter Pavel Zarubin said on his Telegram channel on Sunday that it would be the “first event in a long time” including both Putin and western leaders.

According to the state RIA news agency, the G20 virtual summit will be held on Wednesday.

The Kremlin said on Monday it regretted Finland’s decision to shut crossings on its border with Russia , saying it reflected Helsinki’s adoption of an anti-Russian stance, Reuters reports.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov , speaking at a regular news briefing, also rejected Finland’s accusation that Russia is deliberately pushing illegal migrants towards the border and said that Russian border guards were following all instructions.

Finland, a member of the European Union and – from this year – also of the Nato military alliance, closed four crossings on its border with Russia on Saturday as Helsinki seeks to halt a flow of asylum seekers it says was instigated by Moscow.

Two killed by Russian shelling in Kherson, Ukrainian authorities say

Reuters reports that two people were killed early on Monday after Russian forces shelled a parking lot in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, authorities said.

Regional prosecutors opened a war crimes investigation into the artillery strike, which occurred at about 9am (7am GMT) and injured one other person, the regional prosecutor’s office reported.

The Kherson governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said the two dead were drivers for a private transport business.

Images posted on Telegram showed firefighters dousing cars that had been blasted apart, one day after a separate strike on the city wounded five people, including a three-year-old girl.

Russian forces have regularly shelled Kherson from across the Dnipro River since the regional capital was reoccupied by Ukrainian troops last November.

Ukraine said last week it had secured a foothold on the eastern bank of the Dnipro and that its troops were trying to push Russian forces further back.

US defence secretary visits Kyiv

The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, arrived in Kyiv on Monday for a visit, he said on the X social media platform, Reuters reports.

“I’m here today to deliver an important message: the United States will continue to stand with Ukraine in their fight for freedom against Russia’s aggression, both now and into the future.”

The visit comes amid increasing division over Ukraine aid in the US legislature. A joint Ukraine-US military industry conference in Washington is due to take place next month.

That event, due to be held on 6-7 December, is intended to boost Ukraine’s domestic arms production as its fight against a full-scale Russian invasion nears the two-year mark.

Reuters reports that a Japanese delegation led by senior industry and foreign ministry officials and including business representatives is visiting Ukraine on Monday for talks ahead of a reconstruction conference that Japan will host, the industry ministry said.

Japan, which has been supporting Ukraine with funds and by accepting refugees since Russia invaded in February 2022, has also been promoting support for Ukraine at the level of the G7, which Japan chairs this year.

Kazuchika Iwata , the state minister of economy, trade and industry (METI), and the state minister for foreign affairs Kiyoto Tsuji , are visiting together with representatives of Japan companies, METI said in a statement.

In Kyiv, the delegation, which includes members of Keidanren, Japan’s biggest business lobby, in charge of a committee on Ukraine’s reconstruction, plans talks with the prime minister, Denys Shmyhal , government officials and companies.

Shmyhal said this month Ukraine would need budget support of about $42bn this year and next year to plug a massive deficit and aid reconstruction from the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion.

METI said the visit was an opportunity to hear about Ukraine’s needs and to discuss specific projects and accelerate public and private efforts to help.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy – who visited Japan in May during a G7 summit – and the Japanese prime minister, Fumio Kishida, agreed this month to hold a Japan-Ukraine Conference for promotion of Economic Reconstruction in Tokyo on 19 February.
