While National Sandwich Day is officially recognized Nov. 3, in our JLB world , we celebrate it nearly every day.

From classics like pastrami on rye and tuna melts to (depending on where you’re from) grinders, heroes, hoagies, subs or po’boys, we love them in all shapes and sizes. 

But we do have our favorites.

To compile the list of our top 13 in Southwest Florida, we focused on independently owned mom-and-pop sandwich shops where the love and passion for wonderful bread — and what’s between it — is tasted in every bite. 

Next, we eat (#BestAssignmentEver). 

And eat some more.

You should too.

Artisan Eatery

I’m late jumping on this quaint, cozy, wondrous south Fort Myers restaurant’s bandwagon. Everything is chef-created, scratch-made and oh-so-tempting. The house-made pastrami, for example, is smoked for eight hours overnight. It’s on the breakfast menu in the hash and in two of the sandwiches — the Reuben and New Yorker. One bite into the latter and I was hooked. That pastrami was lovingly layered under sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, with beer mustard aioli (oh my) on marble rye. That delightfully crunchy, gooey, lean goodness will have me coming back again and again. There’s plenty of room on the bandwagon for you to join in too. Big Nick’s BBQ

Although this south Fort Myers drive-thru barbecue joint has been open for less than two years, I feel like we’ve been lifelong friends. I can always count on it for mouthwatering ribs, Carolina pork, brined and smoked turkey and one of my favorite smash-burgers around. But it’s the brisket sandwich that I order most often. The meat is smoked tender for 15 to 16 hours over black oak wood, melting the marbled fat and marinating from the inside out before being hand cut to order. If that’s not enough, you’ll find more of that brisket in the mac & cheese too. Order online and schedule a pickup time. Blue Dog Bar & Grill

Mullet, which can be bony and strong tasting, is a tricky fish to work with. But you need not worry at this Matlacha gem . Co-owner Jesse Tincher gets his Pine Island mullet fresh daily and goes through “600 pounds in a week.” He came up with more than a hundred different ways to serve it when the restaurant had Mullet Madness Mondays. Now you can find it in his smoked fish dip, added to salads, in bowls, in tacos and of course, in sandwiches. We got our half-pound of fresh, light, flaky perfection blackened on a buttered and toasted brioche bun. The lettuce, tomato and tartar sauce it comes with on the side stayed on the plate so we could go all in on the fish alone. It’s that good here. Trust me and the folks at Blue Dog. Larry's Lunchbox

Can you really call yourself a Naples resident without visiting this kosher-style sandwich joint that’s been open for 37 years? Like that goofy hit song from the 70s, I am torn between two lovers — hot pastrami on rye and “Marci’s Main Mover,” a Reuben-esque turkey sandwich named for co-owner and front-of-house self-proclaimed “sandwich nazi” Marci Redding. Husband Larry is in the back cheffing sandwiches, soups and other goodies at their original across-the-courthouse eatery. Their daughter runs the uptown store. If you fall in love with the hearty rye bread, take home a humungous loaf for $14. Lelulo’s Pizzeria

The French fry lover in me gasped when my order came. It was the first time I didn’t order a pie from this popular Cape Coral pizza joint. Transported to Steel City and surrounded by black and gold, I opted for the Pittsburgh-style sandwich. A generous-outrageous-spectacular amount of fries is piled along with coleslaw, tomato and cheese on top of your choice of meat — ham, salami, turkey, corned beef (our choice on this day), chicken, capicola and more — and placed-packed-crammed together on a homemade roll. When Kayla Pfeiffer, one of the top chefs in Naples who's busy prepping her new Bicyclette Cookshop for a planned November opening, says her favorite sandwich is an Italian hero from new owner Kimberley Pace-Arquilla's shop ‒ 1,000 per month are sold during season — attention must be paid. “The sandwich is stacked with some of my favorite cured meats, including mortadella, the most underrated of cured meats." We split half of this fantastic hero and still had a quarter to take home. My pick: if the daily special is the sublime house-made sausage with plump roasted peppers and onion, get it. Ori's Bakery & Cafe

Italian beef with all the trimmings from a Portillo’s alum? Yes, and every bite melts in your mouth. Though there’s ample gravy, many customers order an extra side cup; it’s that good. Peppery (and optional) giardiniera sauce made my head sweat. Pro tip: ask the kitchen to slice this seven-incher in half for easier eating and ask for extra napkins because you’ll need them. Pizzata Pizzeria + Aperitivo

I’ve always said my last meal on earth will be eggplant Parmesan. If this happens in Naples, I hope my caretakers will head to this year-old spot co-owned by dough wonk Vinny Gallegher and Davide Lubrano Lavadera. 10 Twenty Five

The motha clucka is one of the most popular items at this always cool, always trendy Cape Coral (and downtown Fort Myers) neighborhood gastropub. And that’s saying a lot on this creatively eclectic menu. Maybe it’s the sneakily hot (but not too hot) crunchy coating on the Nashville hot buttermilk fried chicken. Or maybe it’s the moist and flavorful chicken itself. Or it could be the combination of the green onion slaw and house-pickled onions. The brioche bun is nothing to sneeze at either. Whatever it is, we’re glad this hand-held wonder is getting the attention it deserves. When Wally Crane tells you his favorite sandwich is the Sgt. Pepper’s, you nod. After all, the owner of this quirky, cool south Fort Myers sub shop should know what’s best. And even if you’re not in the mood for a breakfast item that comes in a flour tortilla, knowing it technically may or may not be a sandwich (you can order it on a roll), you order it anyway. And as you inhale/devour the scrambled eggs, steak, hash brown, jalapeno, pepper jack and chipotle ranch concoction, you nod some more. After all, Wally knows best. River Des Peres Yacht Club Deli Sandwich Shop Opens in Carondelet

In a quiet moment, Cindy Delgado and Michael Sullivan came out from behind the counter to talk to customers.

The Italian salad, a special one afternoon.

The simply delicious reuben comes this way: "one size, $6.75."

Michael’s Special Tomato Salad features tomatoes hand-selected by Chef Sullivan, fresh mozzarella, sliced cucumbers and a chiffonade of fresh basil with house dressing and a drizzle of reduced balsamic vinegar.

Just north of the scenic River Des Peres you’ll find Michael Sullivan and Cindy Delgado making stacked-high sandwiches and small talk six days a week in their newly-opened Yacht Club Deli Sandwich Shop, eponymously named for said waterway, at the corner of Ivory and Primm Avenues.

Sullivan wears a captain’s hat instead of a chef’s toque as he slices, dices and stuffs bread delivered fresh daily with meats, cheese and more. Delgado dons a raffish black and white head wrap of skulls and crossbones to takes orders, wrap sandwiches and chat with the customers. They both wear River Des Peres Yacht Club tee shirts and snowy white aprons.

The small menu is all about the sandwiches, hot and cold classics, with a few ringers such as the New Orleans-style muffaletta and the fried bologna sandwich on Wonder Bread. The latter is an off the menu item for children, but Sullivan will make it for kids of any age on request.

The day we stopped in, we tried the muffaletta and the Italiano sub (close up at right), two of the shop’s best sellers. Sullivan suggested we add his Michael’s Special Salad of tomato, sliced cucumber and fresh mozzarella drizzled with house dressing and reduced balsamic vinegar.

Tomato salads out of season don’t hold much appeal for me, but Sullivan said he hand-selects each tomato from local grocers in the winter months. We tried the salad, which was a tasty addition to the toothsome sandwiches. That attention to detail sets Sullivan’s artistry apart.

“Mike’s sandwiches are down to earth, made with the freshest ingredients, including breads baked the day they’re served. His food is full of flavor. They’re old-fashioned good,” Delgado says.

“We’ve got sunny space out back to grow tomatoes and herbs here next summer,” Delgado said. The day we visited Delgado’s mom, Janet Crowley, drove in to the shop from Mulberry Grove, Illinois. “My mom is an amazing gardener. She’s going to help us with our garden.”

Owning a sandwich shop is new for Delgado and Sullivan, but the two aren’t strangers to the food industry. Sullivan spent fourteen years in other people’s kitchens crafting stellar sandwiches, salads and more at Zia’s, Amici’s and Gianino’s. Delgado worked in food production at Kerry Sweets, the company that makes multi-colored hard-shell chocolate candies for the cookies from the Keebler elves, brownie bites for DQ blizzards and frosting for Pop Tarts, among other things.

When the historic building on Ivory Avenue came on the market, the two life partners soon realized they had found a home for the deli sandwich shop they dreamed of opening. The renovation of the 116-year-old Bugle newspaper building began in January of 2014 when family and friends scraped the ceiling off the floor to begin the to-the-studs gut rehab.

In March, they joined Facebook and named their sandwich shop after the River Des Peres Yacht Club. The club, which has no members, no facility, no events and no existence beyond the name, began at the now-defunct Bugle. In an enterprising marketing move, the pair printed up t-shirts with their logo and posted them on their Facebook page.

“We’ve nearly sold out of the t-shirts, but we’ll have more,” Delgado says. “We put out flyers in the neighborhood and people are coming in to try our sandwiches. We’ve even had repeat customers. We were surprised that people sit down in here to eat their sandwiches. We both thought this would be mostly a take-out and delivery business. We were wrong about that.”

Sullivan and Delgado strive to bring the best food forward. The fledgling business team already knows they’ll add some things to the menu. Soup’s on for the winter so people can pair a cup with a half or a whole sandwich. We loved the half-sandwich option, by the way. Sweets and desserts will soon be on the menu. A special party sub menu is in the works as well, just in time for holiday parties.

There’s no indication as of today that the live stuffed Elmo currently stashed in the brig (below) at the nautically themed yacht club will be released. He’s fallen victim to the couple’s quirky sense of humor. You can visit him when you stop by for sandwiches and more.

This compact ultra-wide (130 degree) field of view instrument has a range of 100 meters acting as a second set of eyes when navigating the subsea terrain.

External equipment comprising a selection of subsea robotic arms together with work platforms and collection baskets can be installed on most of the U-Boat Worx models.

The red buoy is characteristic for U-Boat Worx submersibles. When released it marks the position of the submarine on the surface. The Dyneema Rope attached measures 1.5 x the operating depth of the submersible, and is strong enough to lift it to the surface.

The MANTA Controller allows for pinpoint precision manoeuvring. The intuitive controls allow for supervised passenger steering, offering passengers an even more exciting experience. The controller allows quick access to intelligent pilot assistance functions such as  Auto-heading  and  Auto-depth.

Developed to make  Launch & Recovery  effortless and efficient, the MARLIN Controller is a wireless remote to navigate the submarine on the surface. Once the submarine is in the water the controller can be used to navigate it away from the support vessel without a pilot inside. It can also be used to bring the submarine into position above a dive site or for easy passenger transfer.

With Auto-depth engaged, the submersible will hold steady at its current depth. When applying vertical thrust, the function will automatically disengage and seamlessly respond to the pilot’s commands. This function is part of the  Intelligent Pilot Assistance   Features.

When Auto-heading is activated, the submersible will automatically hold its current heading, whether following a course or facing an object of interest. This function is part of the  Intelligent Pilot Assistance   Features.

The U-Boat Worx Information System (UIS) gives the pilot direct access to all relevant information on a clear touch-screen display. This PLC-based sensory network ensures the right information is provided at the right time. The UIS makes diving effortless.

Apart from the basic forward, reverse, up and down movements, the submersible can also move laterally. Lateral movement greatly optimises object approach, view, and dive efficiency.

This submersible is designed to fit in a shipping container. Perfect for when the submersible needs to be transported to and deployed in different locations.

The single lifting point makes launch and recovery quick and easy. By only having to attach at one point – to the crane – you create a safer environment. With the rapid-release and efficient-connect lifting gear, you can be quickly in and out of the water.

Maximum depth protection

Deadman's switch, drop weight, safety buoy, dnv certification.

The MDP feature prevents the pilot from diving deeper than the submarine’s maximum operating depth. In case the submersible should ever find itself too deep, this safety feature will automatically raise the sub until it is once again within its ideal depth limits.

This DMS safety system will automatically resurface the submersible in the unlikely event that the pilot becomes incapable of controlling the submarine. The pilot needs to acknowledge the DMS every 10 minutes, otherwise it will initiate the ascent procedure.

This weight can be manually released from within the submersible to increase the buoyancy of the submarine and return to the surface.

A very advanced USBL system is available that relays GPS data to the submersible’s on-board computer via integrated underwater modems. Piloting with real time positioning and supporting text data provides for accurate and efficient navigation. The DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) delivers real-time ground speed and position data linking to the on-board computer system.

Certified by leading classification society, DNV, requires each individual submersible to meet stringent and extensive rules and regulations, as well as pass a range of rigorous test and trials from design to final delivery. Overseen by independent surveyors, this is an independent verification of the safety of every U-Boat Worx submersible.
