Home to the Seychelles capital, Victoria, which also happens to be the smallest capital in the world, Mahé is the largest island in the archipelago. The local cuisine is a fusion of cultures, blending the best of Africa, Asia and European influences, and is a delight to sample in an al fresco dinner underneath a spectacular starlit sky.

The most famous of the islands is the seductive and stylish Praslin, which plays host to a range of gourmet restaurants serving freshly caught fish with views of the tangled velvet jungle and curving hills that drop down into crystalline waters. Peppered with distinctive fluted granite rocks and red-hued boulders, Praslin is also home to the Seychelles’ most celebrated beach Anse Lazio. For more secluded beaches, take an eight minute helicopter flight over to the west coast of La Digue which is said to be the most photographed stretch of coastline in the world. Why sail in the Seychelles?

Seychelles - home to beautiful bays and national parks, both on land and in the sea. The Republic of Seychelles lies east of Africa, roughly 1,000 km north of Madagascar and is divided into two parts. The inner islands, which most visitors head for, and the outer islands, which are inhabited by about only 2% of the population. Mahé is the main island of the Republic of Seychelles. Its capital city, Victoria, is one of the smallest capital cities in the world. 

What is special about the Seychelles? 

• Plenty of beautiful bays where you can swim, snorkel, and discover the beauty of the coral reefs. 
• National parks where you can take day trips and see endangered species of giant tortoise. 
• Predominantly medium winds and small waves make the Seychelles an ideal region for sailing.  
• The constant warm climate makes Seychelles a perfect place to holiday all year round.

Yachting areas in the Seychelles

The most inhabited areas and the most frequented are around the islands of Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. It’s the perfect place for holidaying and sailing. Most tourists plan to holiday in this exotic area for 14 days, so they can discover the most beautiful and interesting places and still return to their starting point. But you can also take advantage of the option of one-way trips in the Seychelles. 

Weather and climate

The Seychelles lie outside the area where tropical storms usually occur. The hurricanes that race through the Pacific and then on through the Indian Ocean pass by without disturbing the islands. So, when planning a holiday in the Seychelles, you don’t have to worry about being caught in the tropical storm season. The only things that change there are the monsoons and air currents.   

From around the end of November to the end of April, a northwesterly monsoon prevails, while for the rest of the year, a southeasterly one blows. On the islands, it is possible to adapt due to the large number of leeward and windward bays. However one downside is the small number of good berths during periods of stronger wind. 

From May to September, stronger, southeasterly trade winds blow at speeds of 9-19 kn (knots) or 3-5 on the Beaufort scale (BFT). Rain is minimal, air temperature is between 27-29°C, and water temperature is 26-27°C. April and October are calm periods, usually without much wind, and ideal for scuba-diving and motorboating. Trade winds blow from November to March with a force of 2-4 BFT (7-12 kn), air temperature is between 28-30°C, and water temperature is between 27-28°C. 

Mahé

The main island of the Seychelles archipelago is home to the newly built Eden Marina and international airport. The marina is within easy reach of the airport, just 5 km away and a few minutes by taxi. Anse Royale, where you can moor on the eastern side of Mahé, is a cliff-lined lagoon with sandy beaches and coconut palms. On the southwestern side is a bay called Baie Lazare (Anse Lazare).

Also worth mentioning is a small national park on the northwest side of Mahé, Port Launay. If the southeast monsoon is blowing during summer, it is possible to anchor in some places on the northern side of Mahé. Unfortunately, during the northwest monsoon it isn’t.

20 NM to the northeast is one of two enchanting islands - Praslin. Dream Yacht Charters' main base is here in Baie Sainte Anne. This means you can takeover or handover your boat there or at the Eden Marina on Mahé. You can have your bed linen changed, replenish your supplies, or fill up your water tank at the marina, or you might opt to take a trip around the island. You can comfortably make excursions all over the island using cheap local transport (you can take an unlimited journey by bus for just 5 rupees) and visit places such as the famous Vallée de Mai National Park. Unfortunately, the entire southern shore is inhospitable to sailors and there are no spots to comfortably and safely anchor. The exception perhaps being Grand Anse Bay, but this is not recommended in the local yachting guide.

One of the most beautiful beaches in the world is on the island of Praslin. This sandy beach with granite stones enchants all who set eyes on it. However, in contrast to other beaches, Anse Lazio is not home to any protected coral reefs. Another attraction of Praslin Island is the Vallée de Mai, a UNESCO listed, mature protected forest with incredible palm trees.

Near Praslin you’ll discover one of the most beautiful national parks in the Seychelles, Curieuse. There you’ll find Aldabra giant tortoises, beautiful primeval forests and sandy beaches - it is simply an ideal place for a walk. The Aldabra giant tortoises are one of the two attractions for which the Seychelles is most famous for. This species of tortoise can only be found only on the Galapagos Islands, and here in the Seychelles, so there aren’t many opportunities to see these creatures in their natural habitat.

The second most famous attraction is the huge and ornate granite stones here, not found in such abstract form anywhere else in the world. Their imposing beauty will leave you in awe of their grandeur. The Curieuse area is suitable for anchoring and is an excellent starting point for excursions to nearby islands such as Aride or Cousin. Curieuse is a quiet and enjoyable location that you’ll want to return to again. The anchor holds well here.

Aride, Cousin, and Sainte Anne

Aride Island is another nature reserve, lying just 6 NM northwest of Praslin, and is suitable for day trips or you can visit the Cousin Island Nature Reserve. There is also Ste Anne Marine National Park, which is rather expensive, but you can stay anchored here on the first day when you leave the harbour. It is located in front of the Eden Marina, not far from the capital city of Victoria.

Perhaps the most beautiful island in the Seychelles is La Digue. The island is located just 2 NM east of Praslin. The anchorage at La Digue is truly breathtaking. On the eastern side of the island there are three beautiful bays that are romantic, uninhabited, and provide a perfect spot to moor. The most beautiful bay is Coco Bay, the northernmost of the three. It is 200-300 m long and only accessible from the sea, so there’s virtually no chance of running into tourist here. This area has not been mapped, nor it is in map plotters or even navigation systems. You can only get here by pilot and when pulling into the bay, you will have to carefully watch the seafloor beneath you.

Seychelles offer excellent opportunities for sea fishing, whether it's sport fishing or deep-sea fishing. You can catch a variety of fish, including tuna, marlin, dorado, and other prized species.

Some areas are off-limits for fishing to preserve the Seychellois marine environment. This is the case, in particular, in the vicinity of Port Launay Bay, Coco Island, and Curieuse Island.

To reach the Amirantes, crews must obtain permission from the I.D.C, pay a landing fee, and must embark a locally accredited skipper.

Often referred to as the original Garden of Eden , with soft, sandy beaches, fantastic coral reefs and soaring mountains, a Yacht charter in Seychelles is the perfect setting for a tropical holiday.

The Seychelles are part of the Indian Ocean . The phrase ‘breathtaking paradise’ is barely sufficient to describe the porcelain white beaches, shimmering aquamarine waters and idyllic way of life associated with the Indian Ocean.

Mahe, Praslin and La Digue constitute the 3 main islands, however, this region offers more than 100 islands, islets and bays to explore. 

The Seychelles are an ideal sailing destination year-round and temperatures are warm between 25C and 30C. We recommend visiting this region during April-May or October-November , as this is when the water has great visibility - perfect for water activities - and you will also find ideal south-easterly winds averaging 10 to 20 knots . 

These time-periods are also dry, and not too warm or humid.

May to September is considered the dry season with south-easterly trade winds. From October and until March, you can expect north-westerly trade winds of 8 to 12 knots.

You can start your sailing yacht or catamaran charter from Mahe or Praslin (although Praslin is the most famous starting point). Sometimes, one-way charters are offered between the two islands.

This sailing region is well served by the Seychelles International Airport (SEZ), located in Mahe. 

If you are starting your holiday from Praslin, you can easily get a connecting flight with Air Seychelles (15 minutes), or take the ferry “ Catcoco ” which arrives about 200m away from the Praslin base (1-hour crossing between Mahe & Praslin). 

The ferry company provides a shuttle service between Mahe airport and the ferry quay in Mahe.

Yacht4Less can organise airport transfers from Praslin airport to Praslin base and from Mahe airport to Mahe base (both ways) upon request.

The official currency in Seychelles is the Roupie Seychelloise (SCR). ATMs are easily found, however, they distribute SCRs. All main Credit Cards (VISA, MASTERCARD etc.) are accepted in most places.

Spearfishing equipment and wearing camouflage are not allowed, and nudism is only permitted in specific beaches.

Ray Dalio diving in the Seychelles in 2024

I’m not an economist. Or a hedge fund manager. Or even good at math. But I am curious enough to have read The Changing World Order by Ray Dalio who, by the way, also happens to be the founder of the world's largest hedge fund firm, Bridgewater Associates that currently has over $120 billion in assets under management. And since being particularly curious about ocean exploration is also a wonderful part of my job writing about yachts, I also know that Mark and Ray Dalio founded a serious ocean exploration initiative— OceanX a few years back. So… I could not imagine a better subject for my latest “Influencer Interview” series than Ray Dalio. As you’ll see, he’s as knowledgeable and passionate about the world’s oceans as he is about other important subjects.

OceanXplorer is the ultimate ocean research vessel.

BS: The mission of OceanX is “to explore the ocean and bring it back to the world.” And OceanX is doing that by “combing science, technology and media to explore and raise awareness for the oceans and create a community engaged with protecting them.” So, the question is: where does your motivation and passion for the OceanX mission come from?

RD: I'm so excited about the ocean and ocean exploration because the ocean is the most important asset the world has—it has the greatest effect on our wellbeing. And it's also the most exciting place to be. The ocean is 72 percent of the world's surface, and the highest point on the surface is equal to the ocean's deepest depth. So, this means that it's more than twice the size of all continents combined.

I grew up near the ocean on Long Island and some of my earliest memories are of the crabs, shells, all of those coastal experiences. And then watching Jacques Cousteau amazed me, and then I learned to dive, and I was lucky enough to have experiences interacting with ocean explorers. It’s been a lifelong journey.

What I'm hoping to do with OceanX is explore it and then bring it back to people to see it the way Jacques Cousteau did for me. OceanX is an endeavor that I've been doing in one form or another for about 11 years. We’ve done museum exhibitions. We have an ocean exploration that we bring scientists on and is the best platform for both discovery and for conveying discovery in media.

OceanX is doing this with marine biologists from all over the world and sharing their discoveries on regular and social media. OceanX has more than 10 million social media followers, who love following the missions and learning about the ocean. Later this year, we’re excited to release OceanXplorers , a groundbreaking new television series on National Geographic/Disney produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit and OceanX in association with Earthship Productions for National Geographic. It follows a team of scientific and storytelling pioneers exploring the deepest and most inaccessible depths of our world’s oceans aboard OceanXplorer."

BS: Can you tell me about the underwater missions you're most proud of or excited by?

RD: We were the first to capture footage of the Giant Squid in its natural setting with The Discovery Channel in 2012, bringing amazing footage of this incredible creature to the world. We have filmed expeditions for BBC’s Blue Planet II and Sir David Attenborough’s award-winning series Great Barrier Reef."

BS: Since some of OceanX’s greatest contributions to the field of marine science include conducting the first-ever submersible dives to the Antarctic seafloor and conducting the most comprehensive survey of North America’s only coral barrier reef system it’s obvious that submarine-operation is integral to OceanX’s mission. Can you also talk about your choice of Triton subs? Apart from any connection to the company you might have, can you tell me why Triton subs are the best choice for the missions you have planned?

OceanXplorer is the ultimate ocean research vessel with serious sub-ops capability.

RD: We use Triton subs for ocean exploration because they are the most reliable and they can be perfectly customized for our scientific and media needs.

And OceanX continues to make a positive difference in the world. Earlier this year, OceanX convened global climate leaders together at COP28 in Dubai to advance ocean health. Experts aboard OceanXplorer this year have also surveyed underwater seamounts and ridges in the Azores to provide data to support the Azorean government’s goal of designating 30% of the region’s waters as Marine Protected Areas. And during a recent mission in the Seychelles (where these photos of Dalio diving were shot) OceanX also created the first-ever comprehensive map of the Aldabra Atoll, the world's second-largest coral atoll.
