B.C. and the Pacific Northwest

Lady Pat – A John Alden design built in 1927 at Vancouver Drydock and Salvage in North Vancouver for Ron Maitland, one of the early stalwarts of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. Lady Pat first contended for the Lipton Cup in 1927, winning the first race, but losing to Sir Tom in the second. During the start sequence of final race, Ron Maitland, in the interest of good sportsmanship, asked for a postponement to allow Sir Tom to fix a broken halyard. Sir Tom went on to win the race and series. Lady Pat competed in many more Lipton Cup, Isherwood Cup and other events through the 1920’s and 1930’s, winning the Lipton Cup in 1931, 1932, and 1933. She was sold to Manson Backus of Seattle in 1937. She is rumoured to still be around somewhere in California.

Patricia – Designed by C.E. Nicholson and built in Hoffar’s Yard in Coal Harbour, Vancouver in 1921 for Miss Patsy Maitland. Patricia was the first marconi-rigged sloop seen in Vancouver. Patricia competed for the Lipton Cup in 1921, 1922 and 1923, losing each time to Sir Tom. Along with Sir Tom, Patricia was transported to Newport Beach, CA to compete for the Isherwood Cup in the fall of 1922. While she beat all of California R class competition, she finished second to Sir Tom . She was sold to Pierpoint Davis of Los Angeles in 1923.

Riowna – A heavy weather boat designed by George Owens of Boston and built on the Great Lakes. She was acquired by a syndicate of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club members and brought west for the 1925 Lipton Cup in expectation of heavy winds in Victoria. She was skippered by Ron Maitland in lighter than hoped conditions and lost to Sir Tom . She was sold to G.F. Gyles whose son Cedric skippered her in many Lipton Cups from 1926 through 1940. She was finally sold to Seattle owners in the 1940’s .

Active – A early design from 1915 by Frank Stone. Rumoured to be part of a planter in Lakeside, Montana

Debra – An Edson Shock design built in 1924. Rumoured to still be around San Diego.

Big Features, Smaller Package: the Benetti B.Yond 37M

Space is usually the reason that owners step up to a larger superyacht—say, a length overall of 197 feet or more. On those yachts, there are easily enough staterooms to accommodate up to 10 family members and friends; there are several lounging areas inside and out, spread across a few decks; and there is enough room for a party or for privacy. Getting all this in a yacht of less than 500 gross tons, which typically caps around 164 feet long, is just not possible.

Paolo Vitelli, president of the Azimut-Benetti Group, was convinced there’s a way. Not only that, but he believed yachtsmen would like a semicustom series with a steel hull, long range, volume rivaling much bigger boats, and four decks. He was thinking in ways yachtsmen hadn’t seen: Steel alone is a radical departure from the norm in this size range. Four decks are unheard of too.

He was right. The 121-foot Benetti B.Yond 37M landed about a dozen contracts before Hull No. 1, Goga , appeared at international yacht shows in 2022. As of January, the next available delivery date is in 2027.

Increasingly, yacht buyers are realizing that volume dictates how roomy a project will look and feel. To that end, the Benetti B.Yond 37M has a volume just shy of 400 gross tons. Strong-selling American- and European-built series yachts, even those that are 10 to 20 feet longer, are unable to rival that volume.

Of course, long-standing physical dimensions remain important. Each of the four decks aboard the new Benetti is a healthy length. This includes the partially sheltered sun deck, which is a full-fledged deck for up to 12 people. With a barbecue, a dining area, a seating area and pedestal observation chairs, Goga’s sun deck even has windows inset into the hardtop’s sides.

Benetti further sidesteps convention with the yacht’s 28-foot beam and an anything-but-cookie-cutter general arrangement. As much as series builders and designers say clients can arrange rooms as they see fit, inevitably, they suggest that the staterooms go belowdecks while the salon and dining area sit on the main deck. Even for yachts with main-deck master staterooms, conventional layouts still dominate. By contrast, the standard configuration for the Benetti B.Yond 37M places four guest staterooms and the master on the main deck. The lower deck is entirely for seven or eight crewmembers and all service areas.

More surprisingly, though, Goga follows an alternate arrangement, which Vitelli personally selected, since he intended to cruise aboard (and did for a month with his family). The master stateroom is on the bridge deck, with sliding-glass doors to an alfresco dining and sunning area. In the forward main-deck space where the master otherwise would have been are two guest staterooms. Just abaft them, there’s a playroom. In the not-too-distant past, a dedicated rumpus room would have been unthinkable, especially aboard a yacht of Goga’s dimensions. Perhaps in a sign of the times, nine of the contracts signed so far include the playroom. Owners can also fashion the space as a media room.

The B.Yond 37M also has an open-air toy “garage” four steps down from the main deck aft. The main deck has neither a traditional aft-deck leisure area nor sliding doors leading into a main salon; instead, the main lounge is one deck up, offering better views and freeing more deck space for toy stowage. If you’re wondering why the toys aren’t stowed below, in a garage, it’s because the yacht has a beach club with a sauna down there—once again providing owners and guests with leisure areas not found on comparable-length yachts. The toys launch to either side via fold-down bulkheads.

Finally, the bigger thinking extends to the propulsion package. Goga has a diesel-electric system with lithium-ion batteries created in collaboration with Siemens Energy, allowing four operational modes. Enhanced Comfort Mode is for low-speed coastal trips or nighttime cruising, with just the gensets and electric motors engaged. Extended Range Mode uses the main MANs powering the electric motors for full-speed, 14-knot trips. Eco Transfer Mode sees one MAN running solo, which Benetti says lets the yacht cruise up to 8,200 nautical miles at 9 knots. Eco Cruise Mode is a zero-emissions operation in which the battery pack’s capacity determines the potential range for short excursions.

Based on an average yearly 1,000 hours of use, with 400 hours spent cruising and the rest at anchor, Benetti says the system reduces carbon-dioxide emissions by up to 24 percent and nitrous-oxide emissions by up to 85 percent.

With the Benetti B.Yond 37M, Vitelli really did prove that it’s possible to get much more in a smaller length overall.

The Legacy of Stefano Righini

The Benetti B.Yond series is among the last projects designed by Stefano Righini, who died in October 2021. Righini’s pen strokes characterize the looks of nearly every Azimut and Benetti yacht currently afloat too. In total, approximately 6,000 of the brands’ yachts bear his signature.

With a reported range of 5,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, the B.Yond 37M encourages owners to cruise farther and stay independent of shore longer. The yacht has the capabilities of a larger, full-displacement build in a size that’s better for small coves and many more marinas. 

Because of the B.Yond 37M’s volume and deck arrangements, the crew gets more space for amenities and operations. They have a mess opposite the belowdecks galley, and a laundry area. They also have their own stairway, independent of the guests’ stairs, and a dumbwaiter connecting all decks.

Meet Judith R: The 57-foot American commuter yacht which could be yours for £1.25m

Have you ever wondered what intimate luxury at sea looks like? Well, if you have, look no further than this beautiful 1935 Art Deco vessel currently lying in Marlow, Buckinghamshire on brokerage with Stanley and Thomas .

Judith R, a yacht designed with pleasure and entertainment in mind, was originally commissioned by Barney Balaban, the president of Paramount Pictures from 1935 to 1974 and named after his daughter Judith Rose Balaban. The 57-foot yacht was built by Robinson Marie on Lake Michigan in 1935 and has sailed through a life of glitz and glamour, likely welcoming stars like Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich aboard its deck for A-list evenings with the Paramount president himself.

Back in the day, this glorious vessel was decked out in the state-of-the-art materials of that era: plywood and linoleum. Having taken great influences from the luxury, glamour and exuberance of the Art Deco styling, whilst also adapting to what is recognised as Streamlined Moderne styling – a slightly more subtle and understated development of Art Deco that followed the post-Depression era – Judith R boasted a sleek hull, a beautifully painted stateroom with mahogany panelling, plywood interior and cabin top, and linoleum underfoot, plus an incredibly powerful pair of V8 Chrysler Crusader petrol engines allowing the yacht to sail along at an impressive 30 knots. Her semi-displaced hull allowed her to achieve these high speeds in water whilst still maintaining excellent stability.

Sadly, after the death of Barney Balaban in 1971, and the sale of the boat in 1974 to a New York city subway engineer, Edward Imbroll, this once beautiful vessel suffered a 30-year period of decay and decline until it was found by Susanne and David Williams in 2004 who took on the epic project of returning this once magnificent boat to its former glory. Taking on the challenge of transporting Judith R from Chesapeake Bay estuary in the United States, all the way to her final morning point at Wootten’s Boatyard in Cookham Dean on the River Thames, was just the first hurdle of what came to be an incredible 12-year restoration process.

Over these 12 years, Judith R underwent an extensive rejuvenation that transported her all the way back to her 1935 glory days. Whilst some modern conveniences have found their way into this born-again yacht – including a pair of Caterpillar C12 engines, state of the art electrics, a navigation system, air conditioning and even a boiling water tap – her aesthetic and decor remains as glorious as ever and will no doubt take you back to the heyday of her original streamlined Art Deco style.

Her exterior boasts a painted iroko hardwood hull on oak frames, beautifully varnished mahogany topsides, teak decks and spruce rubbing strips, and her interior – although it may have strayed from the fine plywood and linoleum materials that were once popular in her time – now feature maple, burr maple, mahogany and most of her original metal work, meaning that each onboard living space looks much like it did in 1935.

Susanne and David did their absolute best to save some of the exceptionally unique and special fittings that belonged to Judith R, such as the teardrop navigation lights and the original compass, which can still be found on the boat today, as well as re-chroming and restoring many other original internal fittings. When certain features had been lost or were too damaged to repair, extensive research and sourcing was carried out by the couple to find the exact make and model to replace the original, with no expense spared.

For the last three years, Judith R has been under the expert management and skippering of Classic Yacht Management who have ensured this vessel has received the finest upkeep and maintenance, and very recently, this magnificent boat has been listed for sale and has been placed under the care of Stanley and Thomas Brokerage who are currently holding viewings.
