Describe your wedding flowers. I got extremely lucky when I found my wedding planner, Teresa Gausman. Not only is she a talented event planner, she is also an amazing florist. My bouquet was an assortment of ivory and blush pink peonies, roses, and hydrangeas. Teresa cleverly hung beautiful pink rose balls from manzanita branches for some of the centerpieces, along with assorted arrangements of hydrangeas, roses, and tulips. She did a fantastic job!
We both love the water and wanted to get married near the beach. Robert spent many summers at the Carolina Yacht Club as a child, and the location was perfect for us. It definitely had the romantic, casual atmosphere that we were looking for.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! For my something borrowed, I borrowed earrings from my dear friend Emily. They were beautiful and she had also worn them on her wedding day. For something blue, I had the wedding date and my new initials, LBM, sewn into the inside of my dress with blue ribbon. I had lace from my mother’s wedding dress wrapped around my bouquet for something old. My wedding dress was my something new.
Our favorite detail was the nautical theme that was carried throughout the wedding. The beachfront yacht club set the tone, and we chose soft, coastal colors for the wedding party attire and ceremony/reception decor. The invitations and ceremony programs had a simple anchor placed at the top of them. We also had cups made with our names and an anchor printed on them in seafoam green.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our reception menu was very Southern. The main course for dinner was fried chicken and waffles, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, deviled eggs, and succotash. These items are always crowd pleasers at Southern weddings, and sure enough, no one left hungry!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? After the reception, guests lined the walkway of the yacht club and wished us farewell with a sea of colorful streamers. I remember the love and excitement that I felt knowing that all of our closest friends and family members were gathered together for us. With a bottle of champagne in hand and a full heart, we left on Robert’s boat. It truly was a happy day!
How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We both went to UNC Wilmington for college and met there through mutual friends. We started dating after college, while I was living in Charleston, SC, and dated long distance until I moved to Wilmington a little over a year later. Tell us all about the proposal! Robert proposed on his grandfather’s pier at Lake Waccamaw, NC. His grandfather plants thousands of flowers on the pier every year and it is absolutely beautiful! Other family members have gotten married and engaged in that very spot. It is such a special place! When did y’all get married? April 12, 2014 How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 275 Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. A string quartet played the prelude, processional, and recessional at the ceremony. We kept the music traditional (Canon in D, Trumpet Voluntary, Ode to Joy). Our first dance was to Van Morrison “Crazy Love” because we both love Van Morrison and we wanted a song that was upbeat and easy to dance to. Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had a four-tiered cake with blush pink and ivory flowers arranged in bunches on top of the cake and between the tiers. There were alternating layers of strawberry and almond pound cake with a cream cheese filling and buttercream icing. It was delicious! What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Our biggest challenge was that our wedding was held on the same weekend as a very popular festival in Wilmington. Hotels fill up quickly for this weekend, so we reserved several blocks of rooms almost immediately after setting the date. We did not want guests to have to travel in heavy traffic from the ceremony to the reception, so we decided to have everything at the yacht club. The ceremony was held on the lower deck and the chairs were quickly removed during the cocktail hour to make space for guests during the reception. The yacht club staff and Teresa’s team worked magic to make it happen. What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We reused flowers from the bridesmaid luncheon and rehearsal dinner at the wedding. This was a huge money saver! What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Working with my wedding planner, Teresa Gausman, was one of my favorite parts of wedding planning. She had ideas galore and was a dream to work with. She is one of the most creative people I have ever met, and because of her, the yacht club looked stunning! What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? For me, wedding planning went by super quickly. My advice would be to enjoy every minute with your significant other and savor being engaged! What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? At some point, we would like to start a family, but for now, we are enjoying this time as newlyweds. We are the best of friends and we grow closer every day.

Kristen & charles | wedding | charleston, sc.
Get ready to view a beautiful wedding and gorgeous couple! They are so sweet and I loved capturing them in my camera! Initially just Kristen’s parents and I met and we really clicked. When I met Kristen, I loved her simple, beautiful character. She was a perfect bride to work with. Charles complements her so well with his quiet demeanor as he takes everything in. Kristen, with her bubbly personality and great, big, beautiful smile, glides through the room, making everyone else around her as happy as she is. Charles looks at his bride in the most gentle and loving way I have ever seen. Kristen and Charles met at the College of Charleston, Kristen now practices law and Charles is in banking.
The wedding day presented a family very warm and gracious in everything they had planned for guests including the details. Kristen dressed and “primped” at a beautiful, traditional home on the battery with a less traditional interior comprising many colors and interesting objects. The fun had just begun on the battery!
Some of the details I loved were: the bagpiper escorting the wedding party down Longitude Lane to the reception from the church, the very special keepsake pins Kristen had on her bouquet (such as her Tri Delt pin & the Camera pin from her photographer grandfather), their signature drink named after their dog “The Colonel” and matching cocktail napkins, and how could I forget Bill Murray crashing the wedding! I loved many personal, touching moments on their wedding day: the first look Kristen had with her stepfather, the first look for Kristen and Charles, and the dance of Charles with his mother.
My most favorite part of the day was when the newly married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, were the stars of some amazing pictures! Congratulations Kristen and Charles! Thank you thank you for letting me be a part of your wedding day!

Take a look at this sneak peek from Kate & Nate’s wedding at First Baptist Church of Charleston, a historic church on Meeting Street. Ushers led the guests down Stoll’s alley, an ivy-covered cobblestone path, to a reception at the Carolina Yacht Club. This was such a fun wedding! Guests tore up the dance floor all night, but the best was the father daughter dance (see evidence below)! Kate’s dad was “no where to be found” until the music came on; Kate and her dad shocked everyone with their choreographed dance! The guests ate delicious Lowcountry food including pork sliders, shrimp and grits, and macaroni and cheese. They ended the night with a sparkler exit and then sailed away from the Charleston harbor by boat.
It was such a pleasure working with you, Kate & Nate! Thank you Caroline for capturing these wonderful moments.

We had our daughter's reception at the Charleston Yacht Club this past weekend. The managers, Saga and Craig, were awesome to work with and extremely helpful. This lovely Carolina Yacht Club fete photographed by Captured by Kate is a wedfabulous little gem that is making me a quite the happy little wedding blogger. Charleston wedding cake designers take confections to an entire new stratosphere. This cake had me at hello. Hello gorgeous work of art that also happens to be a wedding cake . I am super smitten with how the lace on the bride’s gown and the heirloom brooch are perfectly reflected in the intricate details deigned by Jim Smeal .
Kristy shared some insights behind all of the personal touches of the wedding weekend.
“…The intention of the wedding was to recreate an 18 th century esthetic, with modern conveniences, all within historic locations, where everyone could walk to each event or hail a pedicab. The wedding had so many historic and family traditions beginning with the weeding weekend location in historic Charleston, from the wedding at the wonderfully old St Michael’s church to the South Carolina Society Hall and the garden of the Meeting Street home. The friends of the bride’s mother all wanted to have a wonderful bridesmaid’s luncheon celebrating family and tradition by contributing their favorite family pieces; a large a antique English silver punch bowl and ladle, recipes from Richmond Virginia, antique blue and white English porcelain, English sterling flatware, old English lace table linens and an antique Christmas ornament at the bride’s plate for her 1 st Christmas. The bride’s chair was adorned with palmetto fronds, roses, garden greens, baby’s breath and tulle. At the bride’s table a historic English sterling epergne with palmetto trees, an antique Tiffany cake server with little lady bugs perched on the handle for cutting the bride’s cake, hand selected silver charms for each bridesmaid to pull from the cake, Nantucket baskets to carry at the wedding and Nantucket basket charms and bracelets for the flower girls, handmade jewelry from the bride to her maids, old Scottish thistle champagne flutes for toasting and family pieces of Charleston silver made in the 18 th century, for serving the luncheon. The luncheon menu consisted of recipes from Charleston Receipts, and of course cheese tassies. All of the flowers throughout the house were carried into town by the mother of the bride’s friends and arranged beautifully around the house and for the luncheon.
The theme at the Rehearsal Dinner was South Carolina history and coastal references, from table seating arrangements celebrating the barrier islands and points of interest to antique candelabras and crystal vases on each table loaned by friends and family. At the rehearsal dinner the bride’s brother sang a Jack Johnson musical tribute to the bride and groom. Flowers were chosen for their appropriateness to the South.
At the wedding, the bride’s family decided to wear jewelry pieces handed down by grandparents over generations. On the modern side, the Father of bride brought his boat to dock at the Yacht Club to offer evening harbor tours for family, and guests and fishing on the morning of the wedding.
The wedding at St. Michael’s Church was officiated by St Michael’s Rector Al Zadig, and Father Paul Norris from Atlanta. The organist played selections by 18 th century composers throughout the ceremony. The historic church bells of St. Michael’s rang at the exit of the bride and groom. Cocktails at the reception were designed by the mother of the bride to celebrate her new son in law’s love of ice tea, and her daughter’s love of champagne and black raspberries.
Jim Smeal repeated the image of the family cameo on the cake and the bridal lace, the cake had wild raspberry filling .
The bride and groom had Charleston bakery, Baked make dozens of Charleston Whoopie Pies for take home treats.
The bridesmaids came from Atlanta, Richmond, New Orleans, and Jackson Mississippi, each offering their southern traditions throughout the luncheon with advice for a long and happy marriage. All of the calligraphy was done by the mother of the bride’s good friend from Wrightsville Beach,NC. The groomsmen celebrated during the bridal luncheon with a men’s gathering with many toasts, at the men’s bar at the Carolina Yacht Club, hosted by the bride’s stepfather, cigars were enjoyed afterwards down by the boat slips.
The bride celebrated her own 30 th birthday, her Aunt’s 60 th birthday, her sister and brother in law’s 10 th wedding anniversary and her sister’s month old newborn with a Charleston Sip and See the day after the wedding and a baby’s first library shower, and her brother’s acceptance into MUSC Dental School. There was much to be thankful for that weekend.
The bride’s family had friends and family from all points of the states attending. The house was filled with friends and family and new babies throughout bringing much merriment and a few dented car doors resulted from squeezing through the narrow gates leading to the parking areas. The family Labrador, Traveler, was a welcome addition and greeter with his coordinating satin bow, and the nightly arrival of the Charleston night herons roosting in a two hundred year old live oak in the garden chased by hoot owls, made for a wild night after dark.”
