GREENLINE YACHTS UK

Solar powered yachts.

Greenline Yachts can collect and store electrical energy from the sun, the shore pick-up and from the main engine driven generator.

The solar array combined with a Hybrid drive electric unit turn these yachts into floating power stations, capable of providing a constant supply of 230VAC onboard at all times.

Using electric propulsion, the typical range across the models is 20 nautical miles and up to 180nm with an optional range extender.

PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT WITHOUT SACRIFICING YOUR COMFORT

Greenline Yachts were born with the idea of environmentally conscious boaters in mind. We started developing the hybrid system and became one of the first boat builders to implement the vacuum infusion technology in production of our yachts which drastically reduces emissions while the yacht is being produced.

Now, we are taking our care for the oceans to the next level. Apart from offering the Hybrid Drive and renewable sources of energy like solar panels across the whole range of Greenlines and even full electric drive available on all models, we are making sure that Greenline owners leave as little carbon footprint as possible while not sacrificing their comfort at the same time.

All Greenline Yachts are equipped with black water tanks as standard according to the regulations and offer as well the grey water tank for dishwashers and washing machines. We are supplying biodegradable boat wash solutions to make sure cleaning your yachts does not come at the environment’s expense.

Greenline Yachts are built in Slovenia, recently declared the world’s first green country by the Netherlands-based Green Destinations and what is interesting, the most nautical country in the world. The amount of knowledge in the leisure marine industry coming from Slovenia is per capita by far the highest in the World.

Greenline 40 Electric

Greenline 40 Electric, the future is now

Minimal Logo

If you think that electric propulsion for boats is still fantasy, you are absolutely wrong. In fact, the new Greenline 40 Electric Drive marks a milestone in the development of this concept, delivering a trawler that is not only capable of being effectively used every day, but also of dramatically reducing the running costs of yachting.

Important statements that deserved to be verified first-hand. Which is why we drove to Portorož, Slovenia, to test the Greenline 40 Electric Drive in one of the three Test Centres that Greeline Yachts has around the world.

Greenline 40 Electric Drive Sea Trial

On our arrival, the Greenline 40 is there waiting for us, side-moored in the Grenline-reserved area of the marina. It is quite large for a 40-footer, and the generous volumes immediately underline the primary feature of this craft which, it is evident, is designed to be a perfect displacement “family cruiser”.

The ample space available in the bow, on the main deck and below deck, undoubtedly emphasize how it is possible to have, in just 12 metres, everything a family of 4/5 people needs for long-range cruising, in total comfort, with near-zero environmental impact and truly minimal costs.

Greenline-40-Electric-drone-view

The two 40 kW/h batteries are charged, the instrumentation reads 97%, we unplug the dock cable from the column, and we are ready to cast off the moorings. The electronic throttles are very precise and it is easy to get out of this corner berth. One blow to the bow thruster and we are off: a piece of cake!

Out of the marina we go in absolute silence, our Greenline 40 Electric proceeding steadily on its course, without rolling, thanks to the stabilizers fitted as standard by the yard. At 5.4 knots we have a range of around 44 miles, which would be much more than we need to travel from one port to another on summer cruises, or simply to go for a swim in our designated anchorage.

Greenline-40-Electric-navigation

The unit we’re testing today is optimized even in terms of weights, which is why it does not have a teak-finished teak. The latter, however, can be installed on demand, choosing from the wide range of customizable options available.

At around 7 knots, a very respectable cruising speed, consumption is around 20 kW and the range drops to 25 miles, which, all things considered, is still a nice range for cost-free cruising.

At 8 knots, i.e. already cruising above its theoretical hull speed, instantaneous consumption is around 35 kW and the range drops to just under 20 miles, while at full throttle the Greenline 40 reaches 11 knots, although, in my humble opinion, this is not the point of this boat, which is resoundingly made to cruise, which it does very well indeed, in displacement mode.

Lateral-view

What’s more, the shipyard offers the possibility of building the best configuration the owner prefers, depending on the intended use.

What would be mine? Well, since I spend a month at sea every year in addition to the weekends, rarely entering ports, I would opt for the installation of a generator, strictly variable speed, of about 15 kW. Modern yachts are extremely compact, the average consumption would be between 2 and 4 litres/h, and the range would therefore be unlimited, even between 6 and 7 knots.

But I’m a bit extreme, I realize that, the vast majority of families who go cruising choose to spend the night in port so, in this case, all you have to do is plug in the quayside socket and the next day you are off again with 100% batteries, without even turning the generator on.

Even when at anchor , this Greenline 40 Electric shows great qualities. In fact, the yard has optimized all on-board consumption so that the panels alone are able to carry all the necessary load. There are two air conditioners, assuming there is a need for them given the large number of windows available, divided between the main and the lower deck, each with a consumption of 700W. The fridge is another great masterpiece, it is a domestic type (therefore huge) and consumes only 200W.

In short, a great way of going to sea, Greenline Yachts has created a system that borders on perfection and brings “green” yachting within everyone’s reach.

The Greenline 40 Electric in detail

Greenline-40-Electric-interior

Safety is also an important factor, which the yard has developed well on board this boat. All the side-decks, walkways and open surfaces, including those in the bow, are wide and protected by generously sized stanchions, raised handrails and checkrails.

The overall design of the Greenline 40, as we said, is devoted to comfortable stays at sea. Climbing on board from the stern we are greeted by a large cockpit which, by tilting the aft hatch, creates a single environment with the interior of the boat spread out over one huge level. Noteworthy is the galley that overlooks the cockpit, creating a wonderful convivial area and, implicitly, taking the cooking fumes out.

interior

Descending into the sleeping area we find a large master cabin with a central bed in the bow, of almost unthinkable dimensions for a 40-footer. In fact, it has private access to the head, large wardrobes, a walking surface and also allows you to sleep on a king-size bed with your head facing forward.

Completing the lower deck is a second twin-bedded cabin, also generously sized, and a very large head with a separate shower stall.

In the bow, a huge sundeck takes advantage of the deckhouse rise to provide space for sunbathing. A worthy finishing touch to a boat that has been thought out in every detail by Greenline Yachts.

New Greenline 40 Hybrid: A Cruiser’s Boat

' src=

The new Greenline 40 Hybrid is a cruiser’s boat. It’s user-friendly, easily handled by two people, but not too big to be overwhelming. And it has a state-of-the-art hybrid power system, delivering 22-knot speeds under twin Volvo diesel power, while also providing silent running at 11 knots under solar-electric power.

The two staterooms and one head make it large enough to hold a family, or another couple, on an extended cruise, and its bridge clearance of just 12’ 2 inches are meant to slide under those structures on the Great Loop or the Intracoastal Waterway in the Southeast.

Greenline started making electric-powered boats back in 2008; it was a pioneer in what is now a rapidly growing field. The Slovenian builder now has a fleet ranging from 33 to 68 feet. The 40 Hybrid is on display at the Miami show.

greenline electric yacht

The 40 has an array of solar panels on the coachroof. You can see how the hybrid system works in the video below. But the solar array and batteries essentially make the 40 a mobile power station, providing a constant supply of AC power on board.

The boat has twin 50kW electric motors producing the 11-knot top speed under electric power alone. The boat is quiet at that speed; the only noise is a slight hum. Under electric power it has a range of 30 nm, enough to explore one anchorage and move on to the next one; an optional extender increases that to 75 nm at 5 knots.

The Greenline 40 Hybrid is an efficient boat, with a light, semi-displacement hull designed to produce less drag and easy boat handling in various sea conditions. It comes with a standard bow thruster to help with docking.

Below, the two beds in the master stateroom in the bow can be pushed together, while there are two separate beds in the guest stateroom a bit aft on the port side.

Greenline Hybrid System - How It Works

Your choice for responsible boating.

The hybrid system was launched in 2009 with Greenline 33 as the first production boat available with the Hybrid drive. With constant technological development, we now have the 5th generation of the Hybrid drive available.

Apart from the convenience of having 230v AC available at all times, the advantage of the hybrid drive is also the silent and emission-less navigation, which the boating community now calls “gentleman’s boating”. Why? Because only the Greenline Hybrid allows you to sail without disturbing your neighbors at the anchorage or in the marina. The Hybrid drive allows for up to 20 nautical miles at approximately 4-6.5 knots on a full charge which is more than enough for a typical leisure day on the water. The range can be increased to 40 nautical miles with an optional second lithium battery pack.

Watch How It Works:

Greenline Yachts is leading the charge in this exciting sphere of modern boating and has been producing solar-equipped hybrid boats since 2008. The Greenline hybrid concept uses four times less fossil fuel than a planing powerboat in similar conditions.

Every single yacht in the range can be specified as either hybrid or full electric, from the Greenline 33 to the opulent OceanClass 65. It doesn’t matter what the budget is or what style of boat is required, Greenline ensures that sustainable propulsion is available to all.

Watch now how it works and if the benefits convince you!

Hybrid-Drive System

Hybrid Drive Greenline Yachts

The protected hybrid system connects the 4 modes of the operation with full integration and simplicity. A control system simplifies the interface to the user via a single (Diesel/Electric) switch.

  • Simple maintenance
  • Ease of use
  • Use of electric energy for propulsion: the running cost of boating is 10 times lower than burning diesel fuel
  • Eliminating smoke, noise and vibration
  • 230 (120) V AC power system at any time, either at the dock or at sea

Electric-Drive System

Electric-Drive-Graphic

No Need for Wind to Cruise in Silence

Electric drive is the next logical step in the evolution and development of the Greenline Yachts range of environmentally friendly yachts.

Solar panels charge the service batteries to run all appliances with constant 230/120V AC power while the main engine battery is charged by shore power with charging time as short as 4 hours for a full charge.

The Electric-drive mode makes your cruising silent and enjoyable while being responsible towards the environment and friendly to your pocket.

  • Silent navigation
  • Longer range
  • Environmentally friendly boating

Diagrams of Electric-Drive Systems

Modes of Operation

The hybrid system offers four modes of operation that make switching between Diesel and Electric modes of navigation as easy as pressing a button.

Shore Power Sailing Mode

At the dock, the boat is plugged into the 230 V (120 V) AC shore power supply. The battery pack is under charge and the inverter provides AC power to run home appliances like the fridge, TVs, etc.

dock-mode

Diesel Drive Charging Mode

In this mode, the diesel engine propels the boat and drives the generator, which recharges the battery pack in as little as two hours. This mode is used for recharging and when higher speeds are desired. Diesel mode is chosen with the simple flip of a selector switch on the dash.

diesel-mode

Anchor Charging Mode

At anchor charging mode – charging with solar panels: the solar roof array charges the batteries, which provides a 230 V AC power supply to the appliances via an inverter. If the level of battery charge drops below a set value, the diesel engine is switched on in order to drive the generator and charge the battery pack via generator(s). The propeller is disengaged (the gearbox is in neutral).

anchor-mode

Electric Drive Mode

In electric drive mode, the boat is powered by the electric motor/generator eM/G, to propel the boat by using electricity stored in the lithium battery pack. This mode is used to navigate in and out of a marina, anchorage, or no-wake zone with no noise or smoke, and, an insignificant wake. The electric mode also reduces diesel maintenance intervals because no hours are clocked on the engine. In Electric mode at 4-6 knots, a fully charged battery pack provides a range of up to 20 miles. The range can be increased to 40 nautical miles with an optional second lithium battery pack.

A weekend with a Greenline 39…

Greenline Yachts offer a unique set of benefits that no other boat on the market can offer today. You will never find yourself opening a warm bottle of wine or having to serve your friends cocktails without ice. Greenline Yachts offer 230V AC power onboard at all times even without being plugged in at the marina or running a generator. 230V AC is available as standard, even without the Hybrid-Drive option!

We calculated how much power we consume spending a typical summer day at anchor. The simple sheet below is applied to a Greenline 39 with standard battery pack as we wanted to make sure the level of comfort is at the highest possible level for you and your family while you spend time on the water without noise, vibrations or diesel exhaust.

This Chinese Luxury Hybrid SUV Combines a Tank, a Bentley, and a Boat

Overhead view of luxury SUV driving over water

What do you get when you cross a Land Rover Defender, a Bentley, and a boat? The answer is the Yangwang U8, an enormous hybrid SUV from the upmarket sub-brand of Chinese electric car giant BYD that can drive on—yes, on , not in—water.

The Land Rover bit is obvious thanks to the U8’s chunky styling, massive scale (at 5.3 meters, it’s as long as the Defender 130), and claimed ability to drive just about anywhere due to four electric motors and clever hydraulic suspension.

The Bentley factor also doesn’t take much explaining, since the U8’s cabin takes a big step up from the plastics and synthetic leathers used in BYD’s lesser cars like the Seal and Atto 3 . Here there are acres of napa leather, plush headrests, massage seats with heating and cooling, and open-grain Sapele wood veneer. There’s even a storage cubby beneath the central armrest that can be cooled to –6 degrees Celsius or heated to 50 degrees Celsius (21 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit).

Less Bentley but more BMW is the amount of tech onboard, including three displays spread across the dashboard and two more to entertain rear-seat occupants. The central 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen is curved vertically and flanked by a pair of 23.6-inch displays facing the driver and passenger. There’s 50-watt wireless phone charging and a 22-speaker sound system with support for Dolby Atmos.

Image may contain Cushion Home Decor Chair Furniture Transportation Vehicle Electronics Mobile Phone and Phone

Works on Water …

Now for the boat bit. Ready? BYD says the U8 can wade through water up to 1 meter deep—100 millimeters more than a Defender—and then after that, should the wet stuff get deeper, it floats.

You could, of course, argue that any car temporarily becomes a boat when unexpectedly introduced to water, but the Chinese company actually means it.

Instead of promptly ingesting a few gallons, flooding the cabin, and expiring, the U8 calmly shuts down the engine, closes its windows, switches the air conditioning to recirculate, opens the sunroof as an emergency exit, and keeps right on going. There’s no rudder or outboard motor, but BYD says the U8 can sail at 1.8 mph by simply spinning its wheels.

The Brane X Speaker Is Small, but It Sounds Like a Home Theater

Ryan Waniata

Watch the U8 being tested sailing through watch in boat mode. Be warned, it can only do this for 30 mins.

Boat mode is only intended for use in an emergency, like flash flooding, and BYD says the U8 is designed to do this for just 30 minutes. It isn’t clear what happens on extended voyages.

Drivers/skippers are also urged to take the U8 to a workshop for an inspection after unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) taking their luxury electrified 3,460-kilogram car/yacht into the water. This might make the U8's bathing abilities sound like an unnecessary feature, but in countries prone to extreme rainfall and flooded roads, building a car capable of floating back to safety isn’t as strange as it sounds.

… and on Mountains

Back on dry land, the U8 promises to be a seriously capable off-roader. Intelligent drive modes send power and torque to whichever corner needs it, and because there’s an electric motor for each wheel, the U8 can perform a tank-turn, spinning on the spot by turning its left and right sides in opposing directions. On asphalt it’ll create enough friction to buy the Michelin Man a new holiday home, but it’s a smart way of negotiating tight spots while off-roading.

We mentioned earlier how this is a hybrid, but its drivetrain doesn’t work in the conventional sense. While there's a turbocharged, 2-liter petrol engine, it isn’t connected to the wheels. Instead it acts as a range-extending generator and sends its power to the U8’s modest 49-kWh battery pack.

BYD says the U8 will manage 112 miles on electricity alone or 620 miles when the engine gets involved. The four electric motors combine to produce a frankly absurd 1,200 horsepower, making the U8 the world’s most powerful SUV. And BYD says the near 4-ton car accelerates to 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds.

Image may contain Car Transportation Vehicle Suv Adventure and Leisure Activities

Tech Specced

The flagship U8 Premium Edition supports fast DC charging up to 110 kW. Now, that doesn’t sound like much in a world of 320-kW Porsches , but the Yangwang’s relatively small battery means charging from 30 to 80 percent takes a claimed 18 minutes. The engine can be used as a vehicle-to-load (VTL) generator, delivering up to 6 kW for charging electricals and powering appliances.

As you’d expect in 2024, the U8 is packed with driver assistance tech, too. Those three taxicab-like bumps on the roof are lidar units for creating real-time 3D scans of the road ahead. There’s also 5-millimeter wave radars, 14 ultrasonic sensors, and 16 cameras. BYD says semiautonomous driving on highways and City Navigation Autopilot will arrive via future over-the-air updates.

The U8 is priced from the equivalent of £120,000 (around $149,000) in China, where it is available right now. Sadly, BYD has not yet committed to selling the car in Europe and the UK, or even to bringing its premium Yangwang brand here. But when you consider European drivers' newfound willingness to try novel car brands, paired with a plush SUV market already offering the BMW iX , Mercedes G-Class, and Range Rover , the thought of U8s tank-turning in tight city streets or wading with confidence through flooded fords either side of the Atlantic doesn’t feel far from reality.

New piers, extra slips part of marina project at Presque Isle. When will it be finished?

greenline electric yacht

An improvement project at the marina at Presque Isle State Park is nearing completion.

Park Operations Manager Matt Greene said general landscaping and electrical work still need to be done. He didn't provide a timeline but said via email that officials are working on a date for getting boats into the water at the marina.

All boats there were out by Sept. 26 for work to start. The official end date was to be the first week in June but Greene had previously said that would depend on how weather affected the work.

What was done

Greene said five new piers were installed and extensions added extra slips to three piers at the marina, located on the bay side of the park. Fingers were added to all piers that didn't already have them. The area under the piers was dredged and the entire electric system is being upgraded.

"All work was related to improving the docks," Greene said in the email. " We will be able to accommodate more boats in the 25-foot to 46-foot range than before."

Work underway: The North Pier at Presque Isle State Park is getting a $3.9 million makeover

When will boats go in

Greene said officials are working on a date to get boats into the marina. He had said last autumn that there could be a delay of a couple weeks to get boats in the water this year.

"Typical years, we start lifting boats in late April," Greene said via the email.

From October: Autumn at Presque Isle brings beach walk, marina work, solar panel installation, more

Why improvements were delayed

The improvements were originally expected to take place in 2022 but the project had to be rebid because the original submissions came in too high. A contract was eventually awarded to Perry Construction and work began in the fall on the $8.5 million project.

Dana Massing can be reached at [email protected] .
