I am looking at 26-28'sailboats and saw a "salmon"colored boat that caught my eye.The only information that I could get from the ad or the" contact"person[owners father]was that the owner was a policeman with no time to sell the boat, and that it was a Islander "klickitat"... Have any of you any info on this boat design?I could not find anything at the islander site, nor google, and the price is close to what I can afford...but I may have to ship it from Everett down to the Columbia so it may be a wash... how 'bout it? ring any bells:?:

Pictures????
try this link[ http://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/14577]This is the listing snuffy
I looked at the listing. There was a company called the Klickitat Canoe Co. in the Portland area that built a boat of that model. That looks like their standard deck mold for the model. So maybe it is a Klickitat Islander instead of an Islander Klickitat?????? One of these was in the Cathlamet Marina until a few months ago when her owner donated it to the Portland Sea Scouts. Maybe you could find out more from the Sea Scouts.
might do that...except pat kelly will probably try and sell me that s-2 hes been trying to sell for the last year[grin]I know pat from my days in the "City of Roses"many many years ago...

I can tell you a little more about these boats but not much about the company. As for the company, the Hull ID number starts with KCK and I saw one with the number 15 at the end so I assume they made more than a couple; at least 15 I would guess. The hull itself is not particularly deep in the water but has what could be said to be a full keel with a keel hung rudder, along the likes of a Buzzrds Bay 14 if you know what that is. The stern overhangs the keel and rudder. The hull shape is very nice. The deck/cabin profile is low and so there can't be standing head room.

Best Sailboats Under 25 Feet

Best Sailboats Under 25 Feet

Love fishing, going out on open water, and love the gentle rocking of waves? Then, now is the time to think of investing in a sailboat. Sailboats are silent, eco-friendly, and a great mode of transportation for water lovers. In addition, you can choose smaller boats for family sailing excursions.

Why Get a Sailboat Under 25 Feet?

Owning a sailboat can be amazing for those who like an adventure. Having a small sailboat for some weekend fun can be a big achievement for people who like boats, water, and adventurous outings. These sailboats are a great way to have fun on the water, but they can also often accommodate a couple or a small family for a weekend. Here are some reasons why owning a sailboat is not a bad idea:

  • Eco-friendly : Sailboats use wind energy to sail on water. This makes these boats eco-friendly because it is safer for the environment. This keeps the water clean and the marine life safe from any pollutants. The sailboats are also less noisy.
  • Power : Modern sailboats are quite different from the older versions. These days, boats have engineer power included. Yes, most of the navigation is done manually using the sails. Still, the engine gives a certain boost to the performance. This makes sailing an easier task and also provides more enjoyment for people on board.
  • Right-of-Way : When it comes to sailboats, they do not stop easily. That means they are required to have the right-of-way while on the water. You can easily pass through the water because nobody expects the sailboat to stop.
  • Affordable:  Most sailboats in the 25-and-under feet category are affordable and much cheaper to have fun with than pretty much any other weekend vehicle. You do not have to worry about fuel expenses or anything like that and
  • Travel : A small sailboat under 25 feet can be a great way to go through the water for those who like to travel. Those who love sailing the water’s calmness and want to drift through less traffic should invest in a beautiful sailboat. Also, you can take your family with you without having to pay for separate tickets.
  • Variety : Lastly, you can choose from a large variety of boats. There are hundreds of types to pick from based on their size, features, and ability to sail in various water bodies. This gives you a choice based on your budget, making it a convenient mode of transportation without spending too much.

Small Sailboat Buying Guide

Finding the right sailboat is not child’s play. These are not some simple appliances for the kitchen. Sailboats are large vehicles with many components and specifications. That is why you should pay attention to the overall features and details regarding the sailboat before. Choosing the right sailboat is about the size and the power, navigation controls, space, deck, and durability. Here are a few things that should be paid attention to when picking a sailboat for traveling:

  • Used or new : The first question you need to ask is whether to choose a new boat or a used one. New sailboats are expensive and are going to cost more than buying a used one. Also, the new ones will depreciate quickly as compared to the older boats. With new boats, you can take them to the water almost immediately. But with old ones, you will probably have to hire someone to make repairs and maybe upgrades. This will cost you some extra money too. It is always wiser to check the engine; the hull and deck should be dry and intact. Also, you should hire an experienced electrician to get the electric system upgraded. I am always a big believer in used sailboats, but you need to shop around for a good deal.
  • Small or big : Another big question that needs to be answered is whether the boat should be small or big. You can easily find smaller-sized boats under 25 feet, but also lavish 40-foot sailboats. Yes, the bigger ones do look great and enticing. But the larger the boat, the larger the expenses on it. If you are new to sailboats, then buying a smaller one is the best option. It will be easier to learn. Another thing to keep in mind is that larger boats are not that safe and beginner-friendly. It requires a lot of practice to navigate a bigger boat.
  • Ocean or lake : You should also consider where you will sail. Sailing on a calm lake is much different than sailing on an open ocean. Therefore, the boat choice should be decided based on that. You should ask whether you will sail inland or offshore. If you will sail on the ocean, then choose one sturdy and built for ocean sailing. Smaller sailboats work just fine if you plan to sail on a lake because they don’t need to be too bulky or fancy.
  • Leisure or adventure : Some people are serious sailors who like to reach the bigger waves and have an adventure on rough ocean waters. Others like to go fishing with their family on a lake. Now, the choice of sailboat should be made, considering the purpose of the sailboat. You should also consider how many people will be on board before buying a boat. Users should pick a boat that will be comfortable for everyone, especially for longer vacations.
  • Cheap or expensive : Lastly, consider the cost of owning a sailboat. The sailboat cost is not just the buying price you need to pay. The cost of owning a sailboat will include all the upkeep, maintenance, and upgrading costs that the sailboat will incur over time. Always keep in mind the time you are planning to keep the sailboat. If the sailboat is for a shorter time, then investing too much is not smart. Also, you should be careful of the repair costs for older sailboats that need to be paid.

Best Sailboats Under 25 Ft – Final Thoughts

Sailboats are a great way to have memorable vacations even when they are under 25 feet long. You can enjoy open waters, comfortable sailing, and some fun and quality family time on them. The best thing is that there are so many of them to choose from. Smaller sailboats are best for inland water sailing, weekend trips, and during holidays for a great fishing experience. Get ready to become a sailboat owner!

I'm a wife trying to sell my husband's klickitat 30' - need help

  • Add to quote

My first post so it might have all the details needed to answer a few questions. I know nothing about sailboats. We live in Austin tx. My husband has had this sailboat from when he lived in Oregon and it's got no use to us here. He's asked me to list it for sale but I can't find any real information on it. I'll copy the details of his notes to me and perhaps someone can tell me what this is and where to post as looking for klickitat boats reveals very little. Um not trying to sell it with this posting but rather find any more information about and the best places to advertise it for sale. Hubby's text pasted below. Thanks y'all :clobber will be happy when it's sold so I can get a motorcycle 30' custom Klikitat Washington Marina deck and below deck hand made by a retired coastie. 1600 pounds of lead in the keel safe boat, sister ships have been sailed from pacnorthwest to HI. 10hp honda OB *in motorwell. good sails complete

Should have noted Boat is currently in oregon and we have no desire to mess around with it's transport from the current moorage If that makes a diff

klickitat 25 sailboat

craigslist.com Its where I bought mine. P.s.- Include pics.

Hillbetty I would suggest that you call a local boat broker in the area where the boat is now. They should be able to get details and write up the listing for you. most will charge a commission but it is worth the headaches that you will not have trying to sell it your self especially since you don't live near the boat.

Yea, if the boat is worth more than 10K I would put it on a site like boats.com, yachtworld.com or go through a marine broker like justified recommends. If you want to sell the boat QUICK then craigslist is your way to go. Got to weed through the crap "buyers" though.

Your husband should get off his duff and do this research himself. He's the expert in the family. I'm just sayin'.

Somebody will have to be there to show the boat, so you have no option except using a broker. And "homebuilt" or home finished boats are notoriously hard to sell, so you may have a problem motivating a broker. You might want to contact the marina staff and see if they have any referrals for you.

working with a broker I sell cars for friends through craigslist periodically and ask them what they expect for the car - anything over that I take as my commission for selling the vehicle. How does it work with boat brokers? Do they get a percentage or a set amount? Can you suggest anyone to deal with in Oregon?

1979 Islander Klickitat sailboat for sale in Washington This is a listing for a 'Klickitat 26" in WA state.. by the sounds of this discussion: 26'islander "klickitat" - Boat Design Forums They were an offshoot of a canoe building company. They seem to use the 'bahama' and 'Islander' name as well, but from the pictures there's no relationship to the real Islander line. If they made a 30 and sold them as hull/deck kits then it's anyone's guess what it's worth ... what someone will pay, most likely.... FWIW the 26 linked to looks like a decent little boat with minimal headroom. If it's in good shape and a decent buy it will go eventually. Note in the second link there's mention of another owner donating the boat to a deserving charity... perhaps that's another avenue to explore.

photos Thank you for the links - here is a link to the boat itself which might offer more detail forsale_oregon we're not looking to make money off of the boat - just get a fair price and give someone a good value for a nice way to sail.

klickitat 25 sailboat

Never heard of a klickitat 30 I understand thay were fullkeel ?, but Pictuers would be great !

Is there a fair way to even do an appraisal? I take it this kickitat is not a large company or even in existence any longer? I havent really seen an evaluation website similar to nada or KBB for boats that even list this klickitat or island brand - How would it be described? I think of it as like a chevy silverado ls 4x4 you know what I mean? Yea. he needs to get off his duff but it's hard when he's working 60 hours a week. Ugh. Thanks for the help ya'll

Rawson 26 foot sailboat: One of only 22 ever built. Hand laid fiberglass. The design is similar to the T-birds of the same era. This boat is in excellent condition for its age and has been a great boat for the family, which has now grown too large for us to comfortably sail this boat; we will be looking for something bigger. We've had it across the San Juans numerous times. It's a very stable boat and sails well; I've had it out in 25 knot winds with 4-6 foot seas across the straight more than once. The hull and exterior are in great shape and with a little TLC on the inside this boat has a lot of potential. That said, this was purchased as a restoration project and though most of the work is completed there's still a little left to do. Added a two-burner alcohol stove New Electrical system, wiring, and cabin lights New battery charger New fresh-water tank, plumbing, pump sink, and external freshwater fill New portable head Replaced berth cushion foam (need new upholstery New laminate floor (water proof) New paint on the deck and in the cockpit. Old deck fittings patched/filled before painting Pop-top need some love, but is functional. Needs new paint on the inside, but the surface has been sanded / prepped where necessary for the most part. It wouldn't take much to restore this. Needs new bottom paint, but the hull is clean. http: sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=5765 Equipment: 4 sails, all in great shape: Original main sail and spinnaker; 160 genoa; working jib. 2 jib halyards 1 main halyards 1 spinnaker down/up haul 2 3-sheet rope clutch cleats for halyards (1 port, 1 starboard) 2 3-sheet guides (1 port, 1 starboard) 2 lewmar 18 winches on deck for halyards Everything has been rigged back to the cockpit for single-handed sailing 2 recently serviced and rechromed Lewmar 26 winches with standard cleats Spinnaker mast eye traveler on track at front of mast Mainsheet traveler and track Boom traveler and track 2 adjustable cockpit cup holders :-) New 2014 mercury 9.9 outboard motor and tank (still under manufacturer's 3-year warranty) not included - listed at $1500 OBO Asking $2,625 without the motor; additional $1,500 for the motor; will consider all offers.

1985 CATALINA CAPRI 22 foot SAILBOAT/ 7 SAILS / OUTBOARD ENGINE

Titusville, Florida

Model Capri 22

Length 22.0

This beautiful CATALINA CAPRI 22 foot sailboat is located at a marina in Titusville, Florida. It is sail ready and comes with a 2005 Mercury 4 Hp, 4 Stroke Outboard engine with only 9 hours on the motor. The motor was last started 2 months ago. This vessel sleeps 6 people and has racing rigging. It comes with a mast, boom, spinnaker pole with a brand new "hank on" jib and storm jib. Further sails include Capri 22 Genoa and Capri 22 Main sail along with a spinnaker sail with pole, all in excellent condition. However, the roller furler at the bow is not operating properly at this time and appears to be jammed or stuck, but is presently installed on the boat. There is a small crack on one of the side cabin windows but no leakage. The rudder has some wear on the bottom but is fully functional. Railing and stanchions are all solid. The boat comes with a fixed keel with a 4 ft. draft. The forward hatch has never been opened by me for water tight, containment purposes, so I am not sure how functional it is. There are no soft spots or leaks on the boat and the hull is in excellent shape with no bottom painting needed at this time. There is also an EZ Mast Erection System to raise the mast, numerous lines, brand new porta - potti, anchor, life jackets, 50 amp Minn Kota Electric Trolling Motor(not working-needs repair). A flush mounted outside compass was removed by the previous owner. The boat also comes with an outboard support raising platform for the 4 HP engine, which works when the engine is in the water, but has trouble in raising the engine out of the water and has some wear on it. However a smaller, lighter engine(2 to 3 HP) seems to work just fine and raises and lowers this lighter engine into the water with ease. A swimming ladder is also attached to the stern of the boat. Overall the boat is in good to excellent condition and is presently in the water with no trailer available. One forward cleat is loose but is still functional. Please keep in mind that my sailing experience is limited and although I have sailed the boat with the jib, I have not raised or sailed the vessel with either the Genoa, Main or Spinnaker sails because of time constraints, but with my limited knowledge all sails appear to be in "excellent condition". The boat presently needs a good cleaning on the interior of the cabin. The entire boat is being sold in "as is" and "where is condition" to include the outboard motor with no guarantee or warranty to be implied. Also included are manuals for the boat and engine. This is a SUPER BARGAIN for the sailing enthusiast! The deposit must be paid thru Paypal with the balance of the purchase price to be paid by cash within one week of purchase and the boat to be picked up within one week of the purchase date. As a SUPER BONUS, the Seller will also add two good to excellent, high quality DOYLE Sails that "appear to be" main sails for an estimated 25 foot sailboat; the value is estimated at $1,000.00 for these 2 used sails. The marina here has boat slips available and allows live-aboards at a reasonable price, along with power, water and free computer connection etc. Seller has good, clear title for this great boat and SUPER PURCHASE!

Model Montego 25

Here's the TLDR;6 HP 2 stroke outboard Yamaha, runs well, no issues.Roller furling but missing jibMain sail, good conditionBrand new marine battery20 gallon fresh water tankOrigo alcohol stovePorta-potty As a boater, I understand the need to know everything about a boat - so below is a thorough walkthrough. I bought this boat hoping to sail it south this winter - I tried, but discovered the hard way that I need a 30-odd foot vessel to make that trip safely. The original owner had it for a long time and took very good care of it. At 25', it has about 6 feet of headroom and is both comfortable to stay in but also just small enough to put on a trailer. Hull: This boat is solid as a rock. The hull and deck are in excellent condition - no transom spidering, little deck spidering, no signs of soft spots in the cored deck, the through-hulls and seacocks have been maintained and are in good condition. The through deck fittings are all in good order and there is no leakage through the deck in a rain. Sails: -Mainsail in good condition. I have sailed with this sail; it works well and points high. It has a little cosmetic imperfection but has no tears or structural issues. Mast track slides, battens, and grommets in good order. -The boat needs a jib. There is a Furlex roller furling unit (Furlex Type A MKII) installed and in good order that is ready to accept a roller furling jib with #5 luff tape. Or a hank-on jib could be bent on. Engine: 2-stroke 6hp Yamaha outboard - long shaft, on an adjustable transom mount. Runs very smoothly and quietly. 100:1 fuel:oil ratio. Drop down engine mount, throttle extension for easy use from cockpit.I think the manufacturing date is late 1980s or early 1990s. I am presently looking into the exact date. Interior: From bow to stern: V-berth with plenty of stowage below, Head with port-a-potty, sink, and medicine cabinet, Main salon with 2 berths/benches, fold-down table, storage under berths, shelving on each side,Galley with large ice box, slide-out double Origo alcohol stove, sink, dish storage, and counter space,Rear bilge accessible from cockpit- lots of stowage space. The previous owner did extensive work varnishing the teak and upholstering the walls and ceiling with carpetry. The cushions are in good condition with a few minor tears. Systems: -Brand new Sportsman marine battery - I bought this new in October as the one that came with the boat was flat. I have only used it very lightly (only for VHF and running lights) and it is sitting at full capacity.-Solar panel to recharge battery-Electrical system in good condition throughout boat - masthead VHF radio, speedometer, engine startup, interior lighting, electric heater, masthead and running lights (stbd. bulb needs replacement), connection to solar panel for battery charging-Refrigerator for shore power-Yamaha Fuel tank and extra gas can, gas line with bulb in good flexible condition with spare line also in good condition. Both filled with new gas/oil mix in October-Large water tank with connections to head and galley sinks (galley pump faucet needs replacement)-Deluxe port-a-potty - odorless system and easy removal. Through-hull and deck pumpout fittings are in place to install a proper head if desired (just need head, holding bladder, and septic lines) Gear: -Danforth anchor with lots of chain and long, good condition, strong line. I have slept overnight on this anchor.-Lots of spare 3 strand and double braided polyester line-Boat hooks, fenders, life sling-Shore power cable-Small library of classic sailing books-Multiple sets of nautical charts for Long Island Sound-Multiple sets of traditional course-plotting gear-Dry box, tools and lots of spare sailing parts-Boat cleaning, engine maintenance, and interior upholstery products-Fish Finder-Extra bilge pumps-Big set of Coast Guard passable PFDs-2 fire extinguishers Other items: -Aluminum mast, boom, gooseneck, and spreaders all in solid condition. There is some scuffing on the anodized layer. Standing rigging and chainplates mounted into the deck in good condition and vertically braced inside the boat.-The bottom has been dived on and cleaned regularly - thick paint job from a year ago is holding up excellently. No signs of blistering.-Rudder is a tiller control and has a tiller extension and a simple homemade autopilot system.-All deck fittings and running rigging present and accounted for - 2 jib winches and 1 halyard winch in good working order (port jib winch should get new bearings), traveller bar/car solid and working though needs new bearings. Jib tracks and cars in good condition, roller furling unit and extrusion in working order. The line and the blocks of the main halyard, jib halyard, spinnaker halyard, main sheet, vang, backstay, outhaul, downhaul, and reefing line are all in good condition. Please feel free to ask me any questions; I will check this listing daily.-Brian

1983 Macgregor 25S Swingkeel Sailboat

1983 Macgregor 25S Swingkeel Sailboat

Knoxville, Tennessee

Make Macgregor

I'm selling my 1982 Macgregor 25S sailboat as I just don't have enough time to sail it. It's a swing keel boat that drafts about 1.5 feet of water with the keel up but is nice and stable with the keel down. It has a 2008 Yamaha 4hp motor that starts easily and runs great. The main, jib, and genoa are in good shape. The halyards probably need replaced soon though. There is a v-berth in the front, a quarter berth on the port side and the dining table converts to a bunk as well. There is also a porta potty though I've never used it. It has a pop-top which allows a 6foot tall person to stand while inside the boat. All life jackets, anchor, lines, etc are included. The trailer is included in the boat although it is not a great fit. It's ok to move the boat a few times a year but I would modify the trailer to fit better if I was going to tow very far or very often. Local pickup only although I could deliver within a couple hour radius. .

Islander 26

Islander 26 is a 25 ′ 9 ″ / 7.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Robert Perry and built by Islander / Tradewind Yachts between 1976 and 1977.

Drawing of Islander 26

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Klickitat River, Washington

Klickitat River

The Klickitat River, located in south-central Washington, flows generally south from its origin on Mt. Adams in the high country of the Yakama Indian Reservation to its confluence with the Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge. The designated segment is the lowermost 10.8 miles of the river. At the upper end of this segment, the river flows through a broad canyon. As it drops toward the Columbia at a steady gradient of 26 feet per mile, the canyon tightens, and small rapids spike the channel. At about river mile 2.5, the Klickitat drops into a tight, rock-walled gorge. The water cascades and crashes through the rocky channel where the tribes and bands of the Yakama Nation have used dip-net fishing continuously for generations to catch salmon and steelhead. Of the mid-Columbia tributaries, the Klickitat is one of their favored fishing sites, due to both the number of fish and the narrow canyon with its high water volume.

The lower Klickitat offers a variety of recreation opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, camping, and sightseeing. Boat fishing is popular when the salmon and steelhead are running. There is an undeveloped boat put-in/take-out on in Klickitat County Park just below the Pitt Bridge and river access at several places along Highway 142, including a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife fee camp site Turkey Hole. The take-out is before the fish screw trap at about river mile 5, just above the Klickitat Gorge. The fishway and research facility at the top of Lyle Falls requires boaters to take out at this point. The first drop, Lyle Falls, is Class 5+ and, combined with the narrow canyon beyond, is deadly to almost all who miss the takeout. The falls also mark the beginning of the tribal in-lieu fishing sites, and no boating is allowed through this area.

The Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railroad built a railway linking Lyle and Goldendale in 1903. This branch line was abandoned in 1992 and is now the Klickitat Rails-to-Trail. The trail parallels the river’s east bank from the Columbia River to Fisher Hill Bridge, where it crosses to the west bank and continues to the town of Pitt. It crosses Highway 142 and continues along the west bank leaving the wild and scenic river portion traversing many more miles upriver.

Designated Reach

November 17, 1986. From the confluence with Wheeler Creek, near the town of Pitt, to the confluence with the Columbia River.

Outstandingly Remarkable Values

The dip-net fishery of the Klickitat Gorge is regionally and quite possibly nationally significant. Native Americans have utilized dip-nets as a principal means of catching salmon and steelhead in the Columbia Basin since before recorded history. The method was particularly well suited to areas with falls and rapids where fish struggling to climb upriver would be forced to follow a defined route and expose themselves to the waiting fisherman. This fishing method was used historically at numerous falls along the Columbia and principal tributaries.

Only on the Deschutes, at Sherar’s Falls, and on the Klickitat, at the gorge near the river’s mouth, has the traditional dip-net system of fishing continued in a manner similar to that before the coming of the dams. The readily viewable fishing platforms scattered along the gorge section are each registered with a family or group by a tribal administrative office; in some instances, these claims go back generations.

The Klickitat River supports the most significant anadromous fishery on the Washington side of the Columbia in the stretch from the Bonneville Dam to the Snake River. The Klickitat was judged to be the second most important anadromous fish habitat of all rivers in both Washington and Oregon draining to this reach of the Columbia. Features which distinguish the anadromous fishery on the Klickitat include the presence of a traditional Native American dip-net fishery, the quality of the river’s habitat, the number of anadromous species present, the number and size of runs, and recreational as well as historical significance.

Klickitat spring chinook salmon play a critical role in meeting the subsistence fishing needs of the Yakama Nation and fulfilling the treaty share of tributary harvest for the entire Columbia Basin. The significance of the fishery is borne out by large tribal catches and sustained sport catches in recent years. The river provides one of the few opportunities for spring chinook harvest in the area because basin stocks are generally at low levels.

The section from the head of the gorge upstream to Pitt was also rated as outstanding for resident fish. Many of the same characteristics providing anadromous fish habitat also support abundant, good-sized rainbow trout and whitefish.

The lower Klickitat River Gorge is only a mile long and only 20 to 40 feet deep but narrows to less than eight feet at one location. No other river in the region discharges this amount of water through such a narrow gorge, making it a regionally significant resource. In addition, the lower Klickitat Gorge is easily viewed from many locations and has been utilized extensively as a native subsistence fishing site for generations.

The Klickitat River is the second longest free-flowing river in the state of Washington. The majority of rivers of this size in the Northwest have at least one dam along their course. At 96 miles long, the Klickitat is second only to the John Day River as the longest free-flowing river in the Lower Columbia River subregion.

The Klickitat’s free-flowing character provides scientific, educational, recreational, and fish and wildlife benefits. Rivers whose flow is not impounded at any point provide opportunities to observe the natural cycle of flood and scouring along with unaltered streamside vegetation. Such free-flowing waterways offer opportunities to study and compare riverine and riparian ecosystems.

The two soda springs that flow into the river add to hydrologic value. Carbon dioxide charged springs are very rare in Washington State, occurring only in a few locations. The first, referred to as the “Soda Springs” is located on the Klickitat River near river mile 24.5, several miles above the mouth of the Little Klickitat River. The dissolved solids content of these springs are much higher than any others found in the Columbia Plateau. The second spring is the Klickitat Mineral Springs and historic commercial icehouse on the river near Wahkiacus.

Steelhead and salmon

Pound-for-pound steelhead are the hardest-fighting fish in the world. These fish commonly jump three to five feet out of the water repeatedly while screaming 40 to 50 yards of line off your reel. Along with the steelhead, you'll catch fat, acrobatic silvers in the fall. The Klickitat fall-run king salmon are fresh from the ocean. These hard-fighting fish sometimes take an hour or more to land. Klickitat kings average 18 to 20-pounds. Each year they take in a number of fish weighing over 40-pounds. Plus, there's always a chance for a 60-pounder.
