While most RC boats are built for speed and maneuverability, mini RC yachts prioritize realism and authenticity. They are the perfect way to explore the world of RC boating without having to invest in a full-sized vessel. The miniature size and accuracy of these yachts make them a great choice for indoor and outdoor use. Mini RC yachts come in a variety of types, each with their own features and benefits. In this article, we will explore the world of mini RC yachts, discuss their different types, benefits and provide tips on how to choose one that meets your preferences and needs. These brands offer a variety of options for mini RC yachts , from beginner-friendly to advanced models with all the latest features. In addition, there are dedicated websites where users can find information and purchase mini RC yachts , such as Tower Hobbies and Horizon Hobby .

What is a small sailing yacht?

A small sailing yacht is a type of boat that is typically between 20 to 30 feet in length and is designed for recreational sailing. These yachts can be used for day trips or for coastal cruising and are generally easy to operate with a small crew of one or two people. They come in various types such as sloops, catboats and daysailers. Some popular small sailing yacht models include the Catalina 22, Hunter 27, and Beneteau First 22. If you’re interested in purchasing a small sailing yacht, you can check out websites such as SailboatListings.com or SailboatFinder.com for listings of new and used boats for sale.

Benefits of Mini RC Yachts

Mini RC yachts offer various benefits for hobbyists and enthusiasts alike. Here are some of the key benefits of owning a mini RC yacht:

  • Easy to Use: Mini RC yachts are designed with user-friendliness in mind, making them easy to operate for people of all ages and skill levels.
  • Cost-Effective: Compared to full-sized yachts, mini RC yachts are much more affordable, making them accessible to a wider range of customers.
  • Low Maintenance: Mini RC yachts require very little maintenance and upkeep, providing a hassle-free experience for users who want to enjoy sailing without the extra work.
  • Portable: With their small size and compact design, mini RC yachts are easy to transport and store. They can be taken to lakes, rivers, and even swimming pools for endless hours of entertainment.
  • Engaging: Mini RC yachts provide a unique and engaging experience for users. They can be used for solo sailing or group competitions, making them a versatile source of entertainment.
  • Improves Coordination Skills: Sailing mini RC yachts requires hand-eye coordination and balance, making it a great way to improve your cognitive and physical skills.

Interestingly, mini RC yachts have been used for scientific research and environmental monitoring. For example, a research team from University of Buffalo used mini RC sailboats to monitor the Great Lakes’ water quality. The boats were equipped with sensors that measured temperature, humidity, and other parameters to collect data for research purposes.

If you’re interested in trying out mini RC sailing, there are several online resources to explore, such as RC Groups and RC Universe , which offer forums, product reviews, and expert advice. In addition, some of the most popular mini RC yachts are available on Amazon and other online retailers.

Here’s a table summarizing the main benefits of mini RC yachts:

What to look for when buying a remote control boat?

When buying a remote control boat, there are several key factors to consider:

  • Size and type of boat – Choose a size and type of boat that will suit your needs, whether it’s for racing or leisurely cruising.
  • Battery life – Check the expected battery life of the boat and make sure it will last as long as you need it to.
  • Speed and maneuverability – Look for a boat with good speed and maneuverability to get the most enjoyment out of the experience.
  • Range – Consider the range of the boat’s remote control to make sure you can control it from a distance you’re comfortable with.
  • Price – Set a budget and compare prices to find a boat that fits within your price range.

You can find a variety of remote control boats on Amazon and other online retailers. Check out the specifications and reviews of individual products to help you make an informed decision.

Choosing the right mini RC yacht can be overwhelming, especially for beginners. Below are some essential factors to consider when selecting a mini RC yacht:

  • Design: There are various designs of mini RC yachts, with different features, sizes, and shapes. Think about the design that suits your preferences and needs.
  • Construction Material: Mini RC yachts are made of different materials, such as plastic, wood, and metal. Consider materials that provide durability, resistance to wear and tear, and buoyancy.
  • Budget: Mini RC yachts come in different price ranges. Determine how much you’re willing to spend before making a purchase.
  • Product Reviews: Read reviews and ratings of different mini RC yachts online. They offer valuable insights into the product’s quality and customer experience.
  • Brand: Consider buying from reputable brands known for their quality products and excellent customer service.
  • Accessories: Look for mini RC yachts that come with extra accessories, such as sails, batteries, chargers, and remote controllers, to provide value for your money.

It’s worth noting that racing mini RC yachts require different features than regular sailing. Racing yachts are usually designed for speed, agility, and maneuverability. They may not be the best choice for leisure sailing.

Fortunately, there are many online resources to help you choose the right mini RC yacht. Amazon and other online retailers offer a vast selection of mini RC yachts, with detailed product descriptions, reviews, and customer ratings. Additionally, RC sailing community forums such as RC Groups and RC Universe provide insights and expert advice on mini RC yacht selection and maintenance.

Here’s a comparison table of some popular mini RC yachts, including their features and prices:

Remember to choose a mini RC yacht that suits your skill level, sailing preferences, and budget.

What is the most popular RC sailboat class?

The most popular RC sailboat class is the International One Metre (IOM) class. It is the only RC sailboat class that has an official world championship event recognized by the International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA). The IOM boats are typically one meter in length, with a narrow beam and a high aspect ratio keel and sail. There are many resources available online for those interested in the IOM class, including the IRSA website and various manufacturers that produce IOM boats such as Joysway, DF65, and Goth Sails.

Setting Up and Using a Mini RC Yacht

Once you’ve chosen the right mini RC yacht , it’s time to set it up and head to the water. Here’s how you can quickly set it up and use it effectively:

  • Assemble the yacht: Most mini RC yachts come in pieces that require assembly. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer to put the yacht together. It’s crucial to ensure that all parts are correctly assembled to prevent damage to the yacht and improve its performance.
  • Charge the battery: Most mini RC yachts come with a rechargeable battery. Make sure to charge the battery fully before going to the water. Charging time varies depending on the battery model and yacht design.
  • Find a suitable sailing location: Look for a calm and shallow area with minimal wind and waves. You can practice in a pool, a lake, or a pond. Avoid areas with rocks, logs, or debris that can damage your yacht.
  • Attach the sail: Attach the sail to the mast and secure it using the appropriate wind depending on the wind direction and speed. Make sure that the sail is appropriately adjusted to get the most out of the wind.
  • Begin sailing: Turn on your yacht and give it a gentle push onto the water. Practice controlling the yacht’s movements using the remote control gradually. Avoid sudden movements that can cause the yacht to capsize. Have fun and enjoy the sailing experience!

It’s worth noting that accidents happen, and there’s a likelihood of your mini RC yacht getting damaged. To prevent significant yacht damage, make sure to:

  • Keep your yacht away from rocks, debris, logs, and other objects that can cause damage.
  • Avoid sailing in bad weather conditions, such as windy or rainy days.
  • Store your yacht safely in its protective carry case after sailing.
  • Clean your yacht regularly, mainly after sailing in salty water. Salty water can corrode some yacht components if left unattended.

Take advantage of forums and online resources such as YouTube videos to learn more about setting up and using a mini RC yacht . Additionally, browsing the manufacturer’s instructions and YouTube tutorials can offer hands-on guidance on how to set up, sail, and maintain your mini RC yacht .

What do I need for a RC boat?

To get started with RC boating, you will need the following equipment:

  • A remote control
  • Batteries for both the boat and remote
  • A battery charger
  • Some spare parts (in case of crashes)

When choosing an RC boat, consider factors such as speed, size, and durability. Websites such as Amazon or HobbyKing offer a wide range of RC boats and accessories. Make sure to check the item reviews before making a purchase to ensure quality.

Competition and Racing

Mini RC yachts offer exciting racing experiences for enthusiasts. If you’re interested in participating in a racing event, here are some tips to consider:

  • Practice: Arrange for regular practice with other mini RC yacht enthusiasts to prepare for the competition. Frequent practice sessions give you a good foundation on how to improve rapidly.
  • Research: Conduct research to identify the different types of races and regulations that apply to your mini RC yacht class. Some of the popular races include fleet racing, match racing, and team racing. Regulations address areas such as the yacht’s size, weight, and sail area, among others.
  • Get the right equipment: Ensure that you have the appropriate equipment required for the competition, such as a racing timer, buoy, and a whistle. Additionally, ensure that your yacht complies with the regulations and is optimized for the competition.
  • Be familiar with the course: Familiarize yourself with the racing course before the competition starts. Knowing the lay of the racing area helps you make quick and informed decisions during the race.
  • Sail smart: During the competition, try to avoid collisions with other yachts, do not foul, and practice clean sailing. To prevent capsizing, avoid risky maneuvers such as extreme turns.

If you’re interested in buying a mini RC yacht for competition purposes, check out established online and offline stores that stock quality products. You can join online communities or forums where enthusiasts discuss sailing and racing techniques. These communities can provide guidance on where to buy quality mini RC yachts and accessories. Also, consider attending local competitions or races to observe and learn useful racing techniques.

What kind of boat is used for racing?

Sailing boats are primarily used for racing. The type of boat can vary depending on the specific race, but some popular racing boats include:

  • Monohulls: A single-hull boat that is typically smaller and easier to handle than other racing boats. Examples include the Laser and Optimist boats.
  • Keelboats: A larger boat with a weight in the keel that helps keep it balanced. Examples include the J/Boat and Melges 24.
  • Multihulls: Boats with two or more hulls that can vary in size and shape. Examples include catamarans and trimarans.

Each type of racing boat has its own pros and cons, and choosing the right one for a race depends on factors such as weather conditions and the skill level of the sailors.

For more information on sailing and racing boats, websites such as Sailing World and Yachts & Yachting may be helpful.

In conclusion, mini RC yachts are a fun and engaging hobby that provide a unique way to enjoy the outdoors. With a variety of types and designs, anyone can find a mini RC yacht that fits their preferences and skill level. Whether you’re looking to race competitively or just want to sail for fun, owning a mini RC yacht offers many benefits, including relaxation, socialization, and even exercise.

Remember, finding the right mini RC yacht takes research and consideration. It’s important to identify your needs, budget, and the intended use of the yacht before making a purchase. With proper maintenance and care, your mini RC yacht will provide you with many years of entertainment and enjoyment.

What Our Customers Are Saying...

Row vista - beyond amazing.

Alex, I gotta tell you this. Yesterday I was at Lake Natoma, the home to the Sacramento Aquatic Center, with my Kayak and RowVista kit. What I did not know was that there was a whole bunch of rowing teams practicing. (I later googled and found that they have the PAC 12 happening today, which is a University level competition). The look of amazement and bewilderment that I got from the boys and girls on sculls was amazing. It felt that this was the first time they saw someone row forward which btw is the only way I know, as the first time I rowed was 2 weeks ago. I got smiles, cheers and sometimes envy (side eyes) from over a 100 young people. I thought of going again today but I think I couldn't handle any more attention. The RowVista definitely made me the coolest rower, although not the fastest among these professional athletes. While, I have improved to 4.6 mph (7.4 km/h) over 2 km since I got the kit. Thanks for letting me live this moment, eagerly waiting for the XCAT.

Carbon 420 - The Perfect Cat

We bought a Carbon 420 in Nov 2020, and have sailed it almost every week since then, sometimes twice a week! Alex is great to work with, answers every question, and is extremely knowledgeable. He truly loves the sport! One of the first things we did was intentionally capsize it to see how hard it was to right... Almost too easy! It's super easy for 1 person to right. And the carbon mast is super light and easy to step. So glad we got the carbon version! We find that it is highly stable, but very nimble. And it can really fly! We love that combination. It's fun and easy! Some accessories we highly recommend: Flextail pump. Cuts inflation time tremendously. And deflates fast to make storage really easy. Upgraded shackles. Huge difference in knowing they are secure, easy to check, and so easy to turn. Worth it! Front trampoline. Rope ladder. Outboard attachment. Trolley wheels. Because we added weight with an electric motor, we made a telescoping extension that hooks over the trolley axle. Now we launch and retrieve easily even at a ramp. The boat just floats on and off the trolley. Super easy and fast! Overall, we highly recommend the Carbon 420. It's perfect for us. We spend wonderful days on the water, sailing, exploring, snorkeling, and just loving the sound of water against the boat. And we definitely recommend Red Beard Sailing... Alex has the best service and the best prices!

HAPPY CAT EVOLUTION...PERFECT FIT FOR ACTIVE, TRAVELING FAMILY OF 6

Having sailed most of my life I was looking for a cat that did not require a trailer, but was large enough for a family of 6 to go day sailing and over-nighting while providing a level of excitement to keep the kids interested (speed). Other options didn't offer the loading capacity, size, portability, and performance found on the Happy Cat. I purchased our Happy Cat in 2020 and have sailed it with my family at numerous locations around Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, and Lake Ontario. Its portability makes it possible to fit in our RV (I've even had the Happy Cat in our Chrysler minivan along with the whole family-tight, but possible). With two adults on board, flying a hull is easy, non-eventful, and adds exhilaration to a day of sailing. Loaded with my family of 6+gear, the Evolution easily skims across the water at speeds that keep my young kids wanting more! While not the least expensive option, the construction, quality hardware/rigging, ease of sailing, performance, and portability made this a perfect choice for us. Alex assisted in reaching a decision on a boat which was best suited for my needs in a NO pressure manner. After sale support from Alex has been AWESOME! Alex continues to answer questions, provide input, and promptly responds to email, texts, as well as phone calls. Thanks Alex for helping me select the right boat to introduce my four young children to the amazing world of sailing..Oh, by the way, I feel like a kid again when sailing the Happy Cat!!

STILL LOVING MY 420 AFTER FOUR YEARS OF SAILING

So happy with this purchase four seasons in. It’s a serious boat with all the lines and controls exactly where you want them. The light weight makes it easy to go in the lightest wind, and the rugged engineering feels solid even when it’s up on one pontoon in 20 knots. One person can easily get it righted if you manage to flip it (which doesn’t happen often). Alex has provided great service the whole way. I haven’t needed much, but he is responsive and knowledgeable. I have patched a pontoon, gotten some rigging replicated at West Marine, and attached a trolling motor to tool around when there’s no wind. All of that has been easy enough, and I see years of great sailing ahead of me in my Minicat 420. Can’t say enough positive things about the boat and Red Beard.

We purchased our RowVista X-Cat in 2016 and could not be happier with it. Superior engineering and construction. Red beard Sailing and Alex specifically are the best in the business to work with. Five stars in every category.

Awesome Cat!

Got our 420 (LD Edition) from Alex at Redbeard this past summer (2017) and love the boat. I have owned and raced A-Class catamarans and while this is understandably no A-Cat, it is an awesome little boat that is a blast to sail! We live aboard our cruising catamaran, JADE, and wanted a portable sailing dinghy to mess around with while anchored in various places. Alex has been a great source, from the original set up and demo of the boat, through the purchase, delivery, inventory and follow up. The boat is very simple to set up (and actually fun to construct) and is lightweight enough to sling over the side with our big boat's spinnaker halyard, so we can set everything up on the trampoline of JADE and then launch and go. The roller furling jib is a great feature that really makes getting underway and docking very easy. My wife and I can sail it together, comfortably, as there is plenty of room on the tramp and hulls. I sailed the other day, solo, pacing a friend on his roto-molded beach cat and kept up in winds that were just shy of 15kts. It comes apart very easily and stows in two heavy vinyl zippered bags which we stow internally in JADE. Because this is a boat that sails really well AND is collapsable and easy to assemble and disassemble, it was the right choice for us. Can't wait to get out and sail it some more!

An Inflatable Dinghy That You Can Row!

I had a small Mercury inflatable for about 10 years, and when I went looking for a replacement, I needed something a little larger and--I hoped--a boat I could row. We usually row out to our moorings on the midcoast of Maine and rarely use an outboard either on the dinghy or the sailboats. The design of the Takacat 260 Sport offered less wetted surface to push through the water and more space for people and gear. The high-pressure inflatable floor was an added bonus: soft and sure under foot and quick to dry, not to mention the convenience of having any rainwater settle below the floor and drain readily from the stern when the bow is lifted. This is our second season, and the "Left Behind" is working out beautifully. We frequently carry an oarsman, two passengers and an 80-pound Golden Retriever, although the boat certainly handles better with a lighter load. Alex handled the delivery from New Zealand to Maryland to Maine without a hitch.

STILL WONDERFUL AFTER 3 YEARS

This thing is a little rocket. This is my Third year with the X-cat. I still love it. I also have a 30 foot keelboat, but I take the X-cat out a lot. The X-cat is stable & well designed. I just took it out in worsening weather (against my better judgement). Very choppy conditions and accelerating winds with some light rains. I was sure I would pitch-pole but did it just would not happen. I also stayed pretty dry which was a big surprise. The motor is also wonderful for leaving against the tide. We’re still happy with it.

A DREAM TURNED INTO A REALITY

For a long time I have dreamed to own a sailboat, but don't have the space to have a towable one. Storage and transport were major concerns since I live an hour and a half from the nearest sailable lake. I learned about Minicat and was completely amazed about its features. Alex did a good job taking me and my family for a demo sail and the deal was closed the same day. Now we own a 420 emotion and it is our dream turned into reality. For novices like us, it took just a couple of hours on the water to learn by ourselves how to take the boat to where we want to go, it is very stable, fun and easy to sail. The service at Red Beard Sailing is not limited to the sale, we know we can count on them for whatever we need, five stars for sure!

The greatest part about portable boats, the ability to take it anywhere, begs the question... "Where can I take it?" Our portable boats can be launched nearly anywhere a kayak can be launched! Here in Baltimore, Maryland, we prefer to launch from the Gunpowder State Park, Hammerman Area . This park has great facilities, including a snack stand and proper bathrooms. The basin is pretty well protected, but large enough for ample wind on most days. In all but a NE wind, the water is flat and calm with little powerboat traffic, which is perfect for fast sailing and smooth paddling. If you are not near us, we recommend looking for State Parks that offer Small Boat Launches. We also have found some great resources through the sea kayaking communities, they typically well document launches and paddling areas similarly to how we discribed the Hammerman launch above.

Many of our boats are in stock, but others must be ordered from their respective factory. East Coast USA In Stock Items - 2-4 days Special Order - 2-3 weeks   Central USA In Stock Items - 2-4 days Special Order - 2-3 weeks West Coast USA In Stock Items - 4-7 days Special Order - 2-3 weeks If you have an urgent need for something or just want to verify the lead time for your purchase, please give us a call ( 410-705-5026 ) or email us ( [email protected] ) for a personalized ETA.

Portable boats have inexpensive and easy to replace parts, so if you are in a situation where you need to purchase a replacement part (or are looking to keep a few spares on hand), give us a call ( 410-705-5026 ) or drop us an email ( [email protected] )!

Depending on what boat you are purchasing and where you live, registration may or may not be required. In Maryland, we are only required to register our boats if they are intended for use with a motor.

The best way to see one of these boats is to visit our warehouse in Baltimore, MD or schedule a demo day on the water for the boat you are interested in. We host demo days where we have many of our boats on the beach ready to try out as well. There is a lively owner's group for all of our brands, we encourage you to join the community either on social media or other sailing forum to meet with other owners that are local to you! Give us a call ( 410-705-5026 ) or drop us a note ( [email protected] ) and we would be happy to point you in the right direction!

Red Beard Sailing is fully staffed with experienced sailors including yacht delivery captains and certified sailing instructors, but we do not offer sailing lessons. We have many local partners that would love to provide these lessons, with many of these options willing to do so on your personal boat!

We take pride in our brands and our work. We will work to make sure you are 100% satisfied with your purchase or we will work with you to return your boat. Unfortunately, the process of simply taking an order does cost us money that we, as merchants, cannot recover. We assess a 15% restocking fee for all cancelled or returned orders to cover our costs.

14 Great Pocket Cruisers in 2023

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: July 20, 2023

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. They are cruising boats easily handled by a small, or even shorthanded, crew. Pocket cruisers generally have wave-taming hull designs and have the ability to take on sporty seas, offer comfortable accommodations belowdecks with one or two staterooms for extended voyages, “homelike amenities,” and the ability to cruise as slowly or as quickly as an owner desires with inboard- and outboard-power options. These pocket-cruising boats have the range for longer voyages , can pull up in skinny water at the sandbar thanks to shallow drafts, and head over the horizon where cruising adventure awaits. Pocket cruisers are true multitasking yachts. When it comes to family and couples cruising, it’s hard to beat a well-built and well-equipped and pocket cruiser.

Best Cruising Boats Under 50-Feet

The following 14 pocket cruisers and mini yachts are all vessels we’ve seen, been aboard, and tested. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Hood 35 LM: high-tech, family-friendly pocket cruiser

This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Quick Specifications

Galeon yachts 375 gto.

Even the remnants of Hurricane Ian, couldn’t dissuade the Galeon Yacht 375 GTO from its cruising mission. The small yacht’s wave-splitting hull form is paired to torque-filled 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards , giving this fun-in-the-sun boat a 47-knot top hop.

The 375 GTO is a speedster, to be sure, but it’s also so much more. Just about every aspect of the main deck seating is transformable and multifunction, from the aft seating to the alfresco dining abaft the helm, and beyond. It also has a family-size and eminently cruise-worthy belowdecks space for four guests, all while providing a foredeck entertaining lounge too.

The Galeon Yachts 375 GTO ticks all the boxes for an easy-to-handle and sporty cruiser.

Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran

Following the success of its 44-, 54- and 70-foot power catamaran models, Aquila has launched the stable-as-a-table, owner-operator-ready Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran .

The Aquila 42 is the entry point into the builder’s yacht line and is noteworthy for its ability to accommodate anywhere from a two- to four-stateroom layout, depending on the owner’s cruising requirements. There are alfresco spaces to manage the sunset cruise with friends and family, including a foredeck lounge area that can be accessed via centerline steps from the flybridge. The Aquila 42 is available with several Volvo Penta diesel-engine options .

Azimut Verve 42

Want to cruise from Florida to Bimini in about an hour? The Azimut Yachts Verve 42 can do that thanks, in part, to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards and a hull designed to dice-and-slice a seaway. Top hop: 45 knots. The Verve 42 also has style for miles with a fine entry, raked hardtop, and a razorlike sheerline accented by sweeping hull glass from bow to stern. It’s striking.

With accommodation for a family of four, the Verve 42 is also solid under the hull tokeep everyone safe on those passages. The Verve 42’s hull is built of fiberglass and uses vinylester resins for blister protection. The yacht’s deck and hardtop are comprised of carbon fiber for strength without added weight. This all means that the Azimut Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A , making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas to 13 feet.

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Beneteau Gran Turismo is the flagship of the builder’s four-model GT series, which also includes 32-, 36- and 41-foot models.

The Gran Turismo 45 ’s cruise-centric layout includes two staterooms and two heads belowdecks, as well as a galley down. There is also a dinette for meals and a settee for rainy-day lounging. Entertaining guests and enjoying the sun is the primary mission of the main deck.

Solaris Power 48 Open

The Solaris Power 48 Open was the first powerboat from this longtime builder known for its sailing yachts, ranging from 40 to 110 feet length overall. The Solaris Power 48 Open is notable for its wave-slicing plumb-bow design, high freeboard forward and 32-knot-plus speed. Power is twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels.

The high freeboard keeps the deck dry and help creates sizable volume belowdecks with an average 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This enables real estate for either one or two staterooms. With the single-stateroom setup, there is a forepeak master stateroom while an L-shaped settee converts to sleeping accommodations for family or occasional guests. Interior wood options are oak or walnut.

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Outboard-power cruising aficionados will appreciate the triple-engine options for the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS . The 42 GLS we got aboard had the triple 400 hp Mercury Verados , which produced a top hop of 45 knots, but triple 450 hp Verados are available. Triple 350 hp Mercury Verados are the standard engine option. No matter the power arrangement, this express cruiser can easily be used for wakeboarding and tube towing. The 42 GLS is designed to handle the rough stuff too, with a fine entry and 21-degree transom deadrise.

For cruising enthusiasts, the 42 GLS has a master stateroom with an athwartships and a nearly queen-size berth, and the lower salon’s U-shaped dinette converts to a queen-size berth for the kids.

Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. The 34O is equipped with twin 300 hp Yamaha outboards, engines that allow the Newport International Boat Show’s 2018 Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet winner to travel up to 214 nautical miles at 24 knots on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

Belowdecks, the 34O has an island double berth and a split-head arrangement with the toilet to port and a separate shower stall to starboard. On the main deck, a U-shape dinette to port accommodates four or more guests on the Back Cove Yachts vessel. The 34O’s galley is equipped with a Cuisinart microwave, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop and a Vitrifrigo fridge and freezer.

Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Belowdecks, scissor berths provide accommodations for long weekends.

The VG-Mini 6.5 2G

performance sailing yacht

Project Detail

The Mini Transat Class is arguably experiencing the greatest growth in participation than any other performance sailing yacht class in the world today. The sailing fraternity universally recognizes this class as being the proving ground for young sailors with aspirations of racing around the world on Class 40s and IMOCA 60s. Technically speaking, these boats are extremely sophisticated with the protos pushing the envelope of development within the confines of a relatively unrestrictive and progressive open rule.

After a significant period of research and development, Van Gorkom Yacht Design is excited to be releasing their second generation VG-Mini 6.5 proto. This mini design is a phenomenal little boat and has the potential to dominate the competition and establish a whole new level of performance. All that, and it’s available as a kit-plan-package for the boat building enthusiast.

The all carbon fiber hull and deck incorporates the latest proven trends in hydrodynamics for this ilk of offshore racing boat. The canoe body has a full entrance angle in its forward sections (not quite a scow bow), and a gentle rocker fairing into a defined wide-body chine aft. This optimized configuration will give the boat a significant advantage in terms of raw power and its ability to perform well in a broad range of conditions.

The appendages consist of an 80 degree articulating fin and bulb, and port/stbd asymmetric dagger boards, and twin rudders. The versatility of this arrangement, plus the added water ballast, dramatically adds to the sailing stability and performance of the boat. The keel has a carbon fiber fin supporting a lead bulb. The dagger boards and rudders are also all carbon construction. A foiling version of the boat is presently under development.

The spar, rigging and deck hardware packages have been carefully selected with the latest philosophies in mind coming from today’s top Mini skippers. This kit is the perfect boat building project for the sailor who wants to put together a “from the ground up” performance sailing yacht and be highly competitive at the end of the day.

VGYD is selling the VG-Mini 6.5 2G basic kit-plan-package for US$4,250. See Kit Plans for details.

Mini 650 rehab.

By Madison Olson , Apr 1, 2022

plastic mini yacht

Sea-trialing Alisia, Olson is aiming to become one of the few American women to ever compete in this race and one of even fewer to sail on a Mini prototype.

Every two years a solo race across the Atlantic leaves from France and finishes in the Caribbean, with a stop in the Canary Islands along the way. It is known as the Mini Transat . While the course is maxi, with 4,050 nm, the boats are mini, measuring 21 ‘ (6.50m) LOA by 10 ‘ (3.05m) beam, with a draft of 6 ‘ (1.83m). There are two classes of boats: series and prototype. While the former are production boats that abide by stricter rules, the prototype class invites designers to experiment with canting keels, water ballast, and foils that lift the boats out of the water to reduce drag and increase speed.

This race is sailed solo with no outside assistance allowed. As with other singlehanded races, skippers may rely on an autopilot to steer. Preparation takes approximately two years, during which sailors must complete a total of 1,500 nm in class Mini regattas with their own boat, and a 1,000-nm solo sail to prove mental and physical fitness.

plastic mini yacht

The Mini 6.50 Alisia is Madison Olson’s ride in the 2023 Mini Transat.

I was raised off the coast of the Florida Panhandle on a 44 ‘ Islander Sloop and have spent my entire life working on sailing yachts. I took my first skipper’s job in the Caribbean at 21, and then sailed offshore, delivering boats between the U.S. and the Caribbean. I skippered my first race program with the W Class in New England at 24, competing in the Candy Store Cup, the Nantucket Race, and the Corinthian Classics. Later I took a position as bow woman on board a Spirit-of-Tradition yacht, which I raced in the New York Yacht Club’s 175th Nantucket Regatta and the famous Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez in France. I crossed the Atlantic three times, raced in numerous inshore and offshore regattas around the world, and now live in Europe full time. In the 2023 race, my aim is to be one of the few U.S. female skippers to compete in the Mini Transat and to race a demanding Mini prototype.

In May 2021, I arrived in La Rochelle, France, to start my story with the Mini prototype #931 named Alisia , designed and built by Etienne Bertrand in 2017. The boat has a carbon hull, a canting keel, an adjustable mast foot, two daggerboards, and a demi-scow bow. The original carbon rig was replaced in 2019 by Heol Composites with another carbon stick and Dyneema standing rigging. The boat had been left unattended on its trailer for a year or more in the back of a maritime industrial zone. The keel was lying underneath the boat with several pockmarks in the lead bulb. The mast was left on deck wrapped in plastic with both ends sticking out. The stanchions had suffered from electrolysis. There was a 3 “ x 3 “ (7.62cm x 7.62cm) area of delamination poking through the faded bottom paint by the opening insert for the keel, a critical area that has to withstand a lot of stress. The lines on the deck were faded from sun exposure. Already there was going to be a lot of work.

plastic mini yacht

Olson’s refit of the Mini’s keel area was hands-on. She grew up on a 44′ Islander Sloop and has spent her working life on sailboats.

Prepping the Mini 650 Hull

First on my job list was to apply a new carbon patch on the hull and then to reinstall the keel. Everything else could be worked on when the boat was returned to the sea. Prépa Nautic , a small local yard that specializes in work on Minis, came to tow the boat into its warehouse, where I started on the prep work with materials they supplied for this job. I used yellow painter’s tape to separate the bottom paint from the hull and the speedometer. Using 80-grit sandpaper and an orbital sander, I began to expose the carbon around the delaminated carbon sandwich laminate to see how large the damaged section was. Afterward, I sanded approximately 3 “ (76mm) in each direction from the damaged spot to prepare for a patch of Gurit XC411, a ±45° biaxial 408-g/m2 (12.03-oz/sq-yd) carbon fabric, as a reinforcement to protect and strengthen the area. On further inspection we deduced that the area was delaminating because the previous patch had not been installed properly, possibly without vacuum-bagging, and because we found air holes that expanded over time, allowing water intrusion.

plastic mini yacht

With 80-grit sandpaper and an orbital sander, Olson exposed the damage around the keel insert on the outside.

When patching carbon, it is common practice to vacuum-bag it into place, especially during hull repairs, which have to be light and strong. Before installing the patch, I continued to sand the bottom to prep it for painting after the repair. This is where the next problem was discovered. Forward and aft of the keel were cone-shaped reinforcement points that normally would be made of foam-carbon sandwich that is painted afterward. These are extremely important, as they take 70%–90% of the loads when the keel is canted. But the fun did not stop here.

As I sanded away the old paint, it became clear that the old foam had just been painted over. So, as on the other problem spot, I sanded all the outer paint layers until the carbon of the surrounding hull was completely exposed so the patch could bond to the existing hull skin. This part had to be done carefully to avoid sanding into the foam, so I did it by hand after taking down the outer paint layers with the orbital sander. Because I was on a roll, I kept sanding the hull, the keel, and both rudders, which all needed new bottom paint.

There were small holes, or what looked like bubbles, by the hull opening where the keel is inserted. The next step was to fill those holes with West System 105 two-part quick-cure epoxy resin, thickened with silica, using a plastic scraper and removing the excess. Normal drying time would be about 15 minutes, but I gave it an hour due to high humidity that day. Then I lightly sanded with 120-grit to even out the surface and thoroughly wiped it with clean rags and alcohol to remove any dust, grease, oil, etc.

plastic mini yacht

The reinforcement points forward and aft of the keel had delaminated after a previous repair.

Let me give a shout-out to Prépa Nautic, which sent one of its composite specialists to help with the most critical phase of the repair. This shipyard specializes in servicing racing boats and gives sailors access to its tools for repairs at the yard. They were exceptionally helpful and gave me great advice, but it helps to speak French, because most employees do not speak English.

Patching and Bagging the Problem

We first cut a patch of carbon fiber weave to size, applying epoxy to bond it in place. When mixing epoxy, always be aware of the specific ratios, and carefully read the instructions (see Professional BoatBuilder No. 194, “Mixing and Metering Epoxy,” page 54). The many different epoxies all have different mixing ratios, even within one company’s product line. For this repair, we applied an interface layer of West System 105 resin to the hull before adding two layers of carbon patches. The easiest way is to paint the resin onto the fabric that’s on top of a piece of plastic film and then press the wetted fabric into the interface layer of resin on the boat. This removed most bubbles and prevented me from applying too much resin.

The final stage was vacuum-bagging, so we first applied a sticky mastic tape and a vacuum bag connected via a small hose to a pump that provides suction, producing negative pressure in the bag to press the carbon patch down while also removing all the air bubbles, including those you might not see. That is critical, because air bubbles in a carbon repair weaken the entire structure when the resin cures, and potentially leads to failure—not a comforting thought, especially in a keel.

plastic mini yacht

In the last step, the new carbonpatch was vacuum-bagged to the hull.

Depending on the climate, a heater can be an important tool to allow for a better cure, which is what we did. After the repair, a quick sanding and an alcohol wipe-down, it was time to spray-prime the repaired area. For such a small area this job took only about an hour, followed by a day for drying before the International Ultra 300 Hard Antifouling bottom paint could go on. Then it was finally time to mount the canting keel.

plastic mini yacht

Alisia 931 is suspended from straps and raised and lowered manually with chains.

There is a cylindrical metal part, aka canting strut, that slots into two joints that bolt into the bottom of the boat. This gives the keel its canting capability. To prevent corrosion, the insert got a dollop of automotive grease. Winch grease will also work. The boat was suspended on a machine that resembled a Travelift, but instead of hydraulics, we were pulling chain hoists on either side to raise and lower the boat. Once we positioned Alisia 931 exactly above the keel, she was slowly lowered. When her keelbolts protruded far enough through the attachment plate and the nuts were tightened, the boat was ready to be launched.

Solo sailing campaigns are anything but a solo effort. While the skippers might be alone on the boat during the race, they almost always require the help of other people, friends, family, other sailors, and/or contractors with a tricky job or machinery that requires more than one pair of hands to operate safely and efficiently. Prototype boats are notorious for having as much, if not more, work to be done on the hard as in the water.

This was my first taste, and I’ll have more to share as I move forward.

The best small cruising yachts in 2023

  • Theo Stocker
  • September 29, 2023

Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

plastic mini yacht

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

plastic mini yacht

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

plastic mini yacht

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

A New Generation of Mini-Explorer Yachts Is Bringing Style to World Adventures

Ocean Alexander 27E

The original explorer yachts were either barebones trawlers favored by retired sailors or square-hulled, aluminum vessels that resembled commercial fishing boats. Fifteen years ago, a few builders unveiled a new category, the mini-explorer, with smaller boats that were long on function but similarly short on looks. These just-launched versions, however, not only have ocean-running hulls but panache to spare in the form of artistic interiors, open sterns and fashionable profiles. It’s a whole new way to discover the world—this time, in style.

Azimut Magellano 25

plastic mini yacht

With its dual-mode running surface, the new Magellano 25 can cover vast distances at a leisurely cruise or whip along at 25 knots. The 83-foot hull is a prime selling point, but the interior is the real breakthrough. Vincenzo De Cotiis, known for his award-winning residential design, incorporated fiberglass in a novel way, mixing it with a bronze powder and spreading it strategically across the interior to complement Verde Alpi marble, walnut, polished brass and two original pieces of his artwork. This very un-explorer-like interior also has four staterooms, contiguous banks of windows in the salon, an air-sanitizing system developed by NASA and crew quarters for three.

Numarine 32XP

plastic mini yacht

A creative interior by Italian design firm Hot Lab is one of the prime differentiators between Numarine’s 32XP and its last-gen explorer series. The 105-footer has nearly 6,500 square feet of interior space, which Hot Lab used to great effect to create an open salon with oak floors, loose furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows. The master suite on the upper deck, VIP cabin on the main and four suites on the lower deck are also uncharacteristically elegant for an explorer. The aquamarine exterior and zigzag window patterns may be flamboyant, but the vertical bow and 4,000-mile transatlantic range mean the boat is built for serious business.

Ocean Alexander 27E

plastic mini yacht

While only explorers of 150 feet or more have open transoms, at 89 feet the 27E has adopted that stern to hold a Jet Ski,a tender and gear. Though the yacht’s profile is different from the other explorers, its designers had the same familiar goal: maximize interior space while incorporating open layouts and expansive windows. With all four staterooms on the lower deck, the main deck has ample space for socializing, extending to gathering areas on the top deck and foredeck. The 2,100-nautical-mile range means the 27E can get from Miami to Barbados with ease, while the three-foot-nine-inch draft allows it to cruise in shallow waters like the Bahamas.

7 Small, Trailerable Pocket Trawlers for New Cruisers

small pocket trawlers

Pocket trawlers are one of the most affordable options around whether you want to embark on a major adventure like traveling the Great Loop , or you just want comfortable cruising accommodations for overnight or weekend getaways. Although far more compact in nature, they provide all the livability of larger motor yachts and cruisers . But their smaller size means they cost a lot less, and there are even some trailerable pocket cruisers out there on the market.

Which small trawlers will be the best for your needs? That’s up to you, but there’s a good chance that one of these seven small, affordable pocket trawlers will fit the bill.

Explore All Trawler Brands & Models

beneteau swift trawler 35

1. Beneteau Swift Trawler 35

The smallest trawler in Beneteau’s lineup, the Swift Trawler 35 straddles the boundaries between a full-sized trawler and what some will consider a true pocket-yacht. But with a 35’6” long hull, a 13’ beam, and a single 425 HP inboard providing the power, it’s easy for a couple to handle on their own, has minimal maintenance and operational needs, and remains relatively affordable compared to larger trawlers (base price starts at $480,200).

The benefits to going big in the world of small trawlers are obvious: more elbow room throughout the boat, better abilities to handle larger seas, and a higher level of luxury aboard. On the Beneteau Swift Trawler 35 you’ll enjoy a master stateroom with a queen berth, a second private stateroom with over-under berths, a full-sized flybridge with a settee and dinette, and a full galley, saloon, and lower helm station in the cabin.

Visit Beneteau to learn more.

cutwater c-24 couple

2. Cutwater C-24 Coupe

Starting at $136,937 the Cutwater C-24 Coupe is one of the most affordable offerings in this roundup. With a low profile, sporty looks, and zippy performance courtesy of a 250-horsepower outboard, it’s as much a pocket cruiser as a pocket trawler.

Yet it still has all the prerequisites to fit the bill: a private forward cabin, a separate mid-cabin berth under the dinette, a complete galley, and a fixed head with a holding tank. Plus, thanks to a svelte 8’6” beam, this boat is easily trailerable.

Visit Cutwater Boats to learn more.

cutwater c-28 pocket trawler

3. Cutwater C-28

Up the ante by about $50,000 and you can step into the Cutwater C-28 , which offers everything the C-24 has plus a lot more elbow room. Beam remains 8’6” and the mast can be folded down to reduce bridge clearance to 9’1” so this boat is still trailerable, too.

Power comes via a single 270 horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesel inboard, providing a range of over 200 miles at a 25 MPH cruising speed or over 450 miles at a six-mph slow cruise. And along with the additional interior volume, this model also benefits from a large cockpit that’s perfect for casting a line or setting out deck chairs plus a transom swim platform with a boarding ladder.

marlow pilot 31 pocket trawler

4. Marlow Pilot 31

Classic looks and style are prominent on the Marlow Pilot 31 , and one glance at this pocket yacht will bring images of downeast lobster yachts and fishing trawlers to mind. But this boat has a very modern level of luxury, from the forward cabin with V-berth, settee, enclosed head compartment, and galley, to the bridgedeck and open cockpit.

A specific price is difficult to nail down since the Marlow Pilot 31 is quite customizable with options like powerplants ranging from 220 to 320 horsepower and wood-trimmed interior choices, but you can expect it to be in a competitive range with other boats of this size and nature.

Visit Marlow Pilot to learn more.

nordic tug 26 pocket trawler

5. Nordic Tug 26

Many pocket trawlers have good looks, but few can trigger the nostalgic appeal of a Nordic Tug 26 . These boats look like mini-tugs, with trawler accommodations and performance. Powered by a single 110 horsepower inboard diesel and stretching the tape to a 28’9” length overall with a 9’6” beam, the Nordic Tugs 26 features a private forward stateroom, an enclosed head compartment, a compact but complete galley, and a dinette that converts into a second berth.

It also enjoys some unique perks, like hydronic heating via the engine, Sapele-faced cabinetry, and a radar reflector located in the stack. Again, in this case pricing is variable, but you can expect to see numbers starting around the $200,000 range for new models.

Visit Nordic Tugs to learn more.

ranger tugs r-23 pocket trawler

6. Ranger Tugs R-23

While there may not be such a thing as a cheap trawler, the Ranger Tugs R-23 is the most affordable in this roundup at a list of $130,937. But it still has each and every accommodation needed for weekending aboard or even more extended stays. There’s a private forward cabin with a berth and head with shower, plus a second sleeping area incorporated underneath the dinette. The galley sits aft of the helm and has a refrigerator, sink, stove top, and microwave.

Power comes courtesy of a 200-horsepower outboard, which runs the boat up to a 22 MPH cruising speed and a top-end in the upper-30s. Plus, with an 8’6” beam this is another trailerable trawler.

Visit Ranger Tugs to learn more.

ranger tugs r-25 pocket trawler

7. Ranger Tugs R-25

The Ranger Tugs R-25 has everything found on the R-23 but in a bigger version. Pricing starts at $167,937, and the powerplant jumps up to a 250 HP outboard. This model is available in Northwest and Luxury editions; the Northwest version is appropriate for cooler climates and has a diesel forced-air furnace plus downrigger plugs and pads for chasing those salmon, while the Luxury edition features dockside air conditioning with reverse-cycle heat.

Although length is stretched to 28’5” (including the outboard) beam remains 8’6” so again, this model can be hauled down the highway to distant destinations on a trailer.

Is a Pocket Trailer Right for You?

Pocket trawlers and trailerable pocket cruisers are great choices for couples and families looking to add some adventure to their lives, and any of these seven top picks would be a good one. Where will your next cruise take you? On one of these small, affordable trawlers, the answer is just about anywhere you want to go.

Basics on Plastics for small boats

As 'plastic' is also a recognized and quite popular small boat material, I thought it should at least be included in the list, even though it’s the one boatbuilding method listed here that is not available to the homebuilder.

Because of that and also that I’ve no direct experience building boats with these materials, I will just outline some basics.

Although Polypropylene (PP) is also used for a few boats, Polyethylene (PE) is by far the most commonly used plastic but even aside from any pollution it causes, it has three major physical faults.   Its flexible, its heavy & its surface is problematic, as it gets rough with use and does not hold paint well.

plastic mini yacht

*Polyethylene plastic in small beads or powder foam is feed into the mold that will control the eventual hull thickness.  The mold is then heated and rotated (hence the expression 'roto-mold'), to distribute the plastic and then it/s allowed to cool before removing the part.  As one can imagine, making the inner and outer molds perfectly match each other with a precise gap is nigh impossible, so the final hulls extracted will also have a slight variation of hull thickness over the whole surface.  But once the molds are made and fine tuned, this process can produce boat hulls 'fast'. like making muffins in a bake pan ;)

The material is very tough though, so works well for small boats that will see rough treatment.

Small ‘knock-about’ dinghy tenders, kayak rentals and kayaks for running rapids (hitting rocks) are the main ones.   But as the material is relatively heavy, it’s seldom used for competitive use where other options are permitted because boats of ABS, fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon fiber are each progressively fairer, smoother, stiffer and lighter … making each boat material progressively faster with rising cost.

plastic mini yacht

(Side Note:   Hard to not notice the large bow wave from the 'bowl' bow.   You will never see that with fine vertical sides, but its the drag effect from forcing lift via a Vee'd bow)

Typical panels to replace plywood are compressed composite panels with a light, weaker core and hard, strong but thin exterior veneers.   Coosa (a polyurethane panel with a small amount of fiberglass) is one exception but it’s still about twice as flexible as plywood of the same thickness, so needs to either be thicker or have internal framing to support it, and even at the same thickness, its more expensive.  Hard to handle too with fine FG fibers often rather loose on the surface.

Until carbon-fiber came along, the most competitive boats were ALL made of wood .. mostly laminated in some way, or of strip-cedar with a thin fiberglass skin.  Quality marine plywood was also used.

Take a 16ft sailboat such as the Wayfarer that is 6ft wide.   Long made of painted plywood, it was finally copied in fiberglass.  They now race together but even if 30+ years old, the plywood boats are often  still faster, as for the same weight they are stiffer.  For this and many other restricted racing classes, carbon–fiber is not permitted due to cost.

A Wayfarer of a plastic such as polyethylene would be like a wet spaghetti noodle … totally distortable and VERY slow.   Polyethylene surface finish is also matt and not very smooth.   It can be waxed and looks ok when new, but soon gets scratched up, so such boats are for knock-about only.    I own two polyethylene kayaks … but they are not fast and as already mentioned, they are heavy … but the bonus is that they require almost no maintenance and they are just about unbreakable.  A typical single kayak weighs about 60lbs though.    In plywood it could be built for 45 lbs and still be stiffer, and in carbon fiber, more like 35lbs.

So with plastic, the only way PE might match plywood stiffness is either to be ribbed all over or find ways to create a composite panel.

The Laser Pico does that, but it’s not cheap!    The Laser Pico, uses a foam-core, molded in place with an inner layer of thin polyethylene.

Perhaps there is a way to create a foam core from old plastic (something looking like the core of an Aero chocolate bar) and then bonding skins to that under pressure ….perhaps skins of thin bamboo could be in our future too?   Who knows.

Such a sheet might then replace plywood and even be used with the Stitch & Glue or the ABC-system for boat designs that suited such systems.   A sheet with a 3mm cork core and skins of something sustainable or biodegradable, would certainly be better for the environment than using ANY plastic.

BALTIC 85 MINI Y

This fast, easy to handle cruising yacht was successfully launched in July 2018. Designed by Dixon Yacht Design, which has a particular affinity for the requirements of yachts intended for comfortable cruising, the silver-hulled Baltic 85 Custom has shown an impressive turn of speed.

Displacing just 50 tons, light-ship, she’s constructed of an E-Glass outer skin, a carbon inner skin and a foam core with lightweight carbon bulkheads and panels used throughout. A telescopic lifting keel with an 11.39-ton bulb reduces draft to a useful 3m.

Through detailed space planning and a high quality specification, this mini-superyacht has not compromised on comfort. She offers genuinely exciting sailing with ease of handling, which should appeal to the growing number of clients looking for a greater level of simplicity in a superyacht.

The yacht’s accommodation, with clean, modern styling by Mark Whiteley Design, includes a light and airy saloon, a large owner’s suite forward with one twin guest cabin all finished in a beautiful pear wood. Detailed planning has resulted in an unusually large amount of space for the owners and their guests giving the impression below of a much larger yacht.

LYC swim team partnership with Sussex Family YMCA deemed a success

lewes yacht club swim team

In the film “Finding Nemo,” Dory tells Marlin to just keep swimming in the face of adversity, and one local swim club did just that this summer.

During the 2023 Delmarva Swim Association summer season, the Lewes Yacht Club swim team joined forces with Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach to have one of its most successful seasons. While the end was a sweet reward for their efforts, the swimmers on the combined team faced a few uncertainties to achieve their success. To begin, the LYC team discovered that while they could practice at their home pool, construction in the area would not allow them to host any meets in 2023.

“Never really having a home during these competitions, they never really had a home field advantage,” said assistant coach Thomas Weeks at the team’s Aug. 2 banquet.

Weeks said a lot of the LYC athletes swim at the Y during the winter, and in the beginning of the year, the team was able to do time trials at the Rehoboth Beach location. He believes some of the swimmers' familiarity with the Y pool was a huge benefit. Weeks added that second-year coach Mike Vansant has had a positive impact on the program. Assistant coach and LYC swimmer Jenna Reinhold added to Vansant’s praise.

“He’s definitely brought the competitive nature to the summer swimming,” she said. “Beforehand, it was a lot of just getting people across the pool, but getting us to be more competitive in the league has really pushed kids toward making improvements and wanting to pursue swimming as more of a competition.”

Having grown up in the community, Weeks said he knew the family atmosphere and camaraderie would be present, but he also feels Vansant has appropriately added competitiveness into the mix.  Assistant coach Camrynn McTeer agrees with her colleagues.

“We had a winning season this season, and that’s never happened before,” McTeer said. “Mike really pushed the kids to give them that competitive edge, and they finally saw his vision and they benefited from that this season.”

McTeer, Weeks and Vansant all came to LYC last season. Last year, she said, they were getting their bearings as a team, while this season the coaching staff was able to implement proper training regimens and fulfill a vision for the team.

The efforts of the coaching staff and swimmers paid off when championships rolled around. After sending 40 swimmers to last year’s competition, LYC/Sussex Family YMCA was able to get 60 swimmers qualified for the final event of the season. Making the feat all the more impressive, the team was bumped up to the higher division after competing in the middle division in years past.

The team took home second place overall, second place in the boys' division, and for the first time ever, first place in the girls’ division. Notable performers throughout the season and in the championships on the girls’ side were Victoria Evans, Gracie Maughan, Elise DiAntonio, Mia Jaoude and Jenna Reinhold. Jack Bain, Max Bradshaw, Jacques Hillion, Dylan Sherman, Beckham Hassell, Lincoln Fyock, Gabe Blanshine, Grant Sherman and Braxton Handley on the boys' side were very successful during the championship relays.

Makos swim team

The 2023 season marked another championship for coach Strohm Edwards and the Mako Swim Club, making it three in a row for the prestigious team.

“Ninety-nine percent of our swimmers achieved their best times this season,” Edwards said, adding that a few of those swimmers finished in the top 50 nationally.

Leading the way in setting personal and breaking Delmarva Swim Association records was Jaxen Edwards, who finished first in the 11-12 boys’ group for the 50-yard breaststroke, 50-yard free and 100-yard individual medley. He broke the meet record at the championships with a time of 1:00.69 in the 100 IM. He partnered with Ethan Schirmer, Lisandro Vasquez and Levi Corcoran to break the records for the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays. Jenna Chambers, Macyn Hockman, Gabriella Damouni and Anna Mumford also broke the record in the 200 freestyle relay at the championships.

Overall, the Makos won the 9-10 girls’ 100 free relay, 11-12 girls’ 200 free relay, 11-12 boys’ 200 free and medley, 13-14 girls’ 200 free and medley, 13-14 boys’ 200 free and medley, and the 15-18 200 free and medley relays.

Finishing first during the championships, in addition to the record breakers, were Jayleigh Akers, Lee Akers, Jorja Burke, Charlize Damouni, Kensi Hawk, Carson Kirby, Jack Wells, Jacob Madden and Breyden Wright.

Edwards was named head coach of the Middle Atlantic team for the third year in a row, leading the girls’ team to a title for the second year in a row.

The most cost-effective pool options to consider are vinyl liner pools and fiberglass pools. When you need customization, you can also consider a concrete pool.

  • Vinyl liner pools are more affordable than concrete or fiberglass pools, providing a budget-friendly choice for inground pools.
  • Fiberglass pools are also considered affordable compared to other types, with a starting cost of around $46,000.
  • Concrete pools offer greater design flexibility and can be customized to fit various shapes and sizes, although usually more expensive than fiberglass or vinyl pools.

When deciding which pool is best for your needs and budget, it’s essential to hire a professional pool builder in Elektrostal'.

They can help you assess your requirements, consider various factors like pool size, shape, material, and location, and provide expert guidance to make an informed decision.
