Is it a beautiful and worthwhile endeavor—this ocean sailing? The excitement of slicing through the waves while beating to windward through a late season gale and the exhilaration of downwind sailing unexpectedly barreling down the wave faces at hull speed while offshore makes us realize that these are the exciting moments for us to grow. It’s definitely a challenge.

Sail and explore the world. From a different perspective, from sea level. We like to find new and unexplored places. And share this with anyone interested. We need you to show us the way. To be honest there is NO plan! At least, we have no fixed plans. We do have a long bucket list and we do have a route in mind. But if the wind brings us somewhere else than we thought we would go we don’t mind. If the plan does not work we will change the plan not the goal!

The world has changed significantly since the beginning of March 2020. We were stuck in St. Martin from March 10, 2020. We had a total lockdown of 2 weeks, curfews, #stayathome situations but we survived! And finally half May 2020 Aruba was the first to “open” with a 14-day quarantine, so we decided to go there. EIGHT was on the hard for hurricane season and we came back October 5.2020. We gave EIGHT some TLC and sailed to Curacao. Now we are in Bonaire! And no idea where we go next! Keep following via Insta and FB!

We left Holland on August 4, 2018. Crossed the Bay of Biscay. Along the Spanish and Portuguese coast into the MED. Wintering in Licata, Sicily. Summer 2019 sailing the Med and November 2019 we crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean. We will spend some more time in the Caribbean. We have not seen anything jet due to Covid. After that, we like to go down to San Blas, Panama, crossing the Pacific Ocean. But we have only one chance. Going there means no way back. We will see what life will bring us on this incredible adventure. Encounter the world from a different perspective. From sea level!

This fixed crossbeam allows for a little bit of movement thereby helping in absorbing enormous twisting forces of the bows. As such, you have to keep in mind that there may be resultant stress crack particularly in the bow area of the vessel.

All in all, the Manta 42 is a superb offshore cruising catamaran that offers a good sail-area-to-displacement ratio as well as plenty of space and accommodation. It's also designed with fixed stub keels and slightly aft-raked bows, which are all essential in enhancing windward performance; something that most catamarans struggle with.

To improve on safety, the keels of this amazing catamaran sailboat are glued into a particularly designed recess in the hulls. This is to ensure that there are no keel bolts that can rip out and put the boat in danger if the boat gets grounded or in the event of a collision. The rig is also ICW friendly and is a true representation of a standard catamaran setup.

Designed in South Africa by Simonis-Voogd, is probably the best design in the Leopard family of catamarans. Designed by Philipe Pouvreau in northern Brazil, the Dolphin Ocema 42 is a truly unique catamaran sailboat that goes against the conventional norm of catamarans. It is equipped with daggerboards, which are essential in enabling it to point higher on the wind while reducing the wetted surface when running or anchoring in shallow surfaces. This, however, requires a higher level of expertise in sailing. This is because lifting the daggerboards higher up will expose the rudders while the daggerboards can also interfere with the hulls in the event that the vessel runs aground.

But even with that, the Dolphin 42 balances incredible performance and cruising comfort in a very compact package; something that is not very easy in bluewater cruising. That's why it's designed using a foam core to make it lightweight by reducing weight wherever possible. This vessel will most likely never let you down if you want to circumnavigate the bluewater on a high-performance boat that is safe and comfortable.

So if you've been looking for a real sailing catamaran that doubles up as a very comfortable liveaboard sailboat , look no further than the Dolphin 42.

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

This boat is designed with a rig that gives you the option of using either a screecher or a self-tending jib. This may seem complex since the sheets are led to winches near each wheel while all other controls lead to a centerline winch that's located in the cockpit. But even with that, this sailboat can be easily tacked once on the course.

This is a real performance-oriented catamaran with efficient hulls and rigs allowing for top speed. This vessel is also designed with a long waterline and a subtle underwater shape at the bow to help in increasing volume while minimizing wave drag. Atlantic 42

Designed in 1993, the A42 has cultivated a legion of fiercely loyal fans thanks to its efficiency and aesthetic. This is the smallest of the Atlantic cruising catamaran line and is hugely popular with sailors thanks to its ease of handling, ocean-going capabilities, and superb use of space. From the forward cockpit, pilothouse to the sleeping cabins, and brilliant galleys everything about this cat is a true classic.

Unlike most catamarans, the Atlantic 42 is designed with a waist-high cockpit that's located forward of the pilothouse just behind the mast. It brings forth a solid construction thanks to the large metal girder-like bearers that run across the bulkheads. This helps the vessel in having the utmost strength, better air circulation under the engine, and a high level of flexibility as far as the size of the engine and its positioning is concerned.

Initially, the boat's style and its outlook were considered conservative but it soon became clear that it is built of high-quality materials and to last. The internal construction of the boat is impressive, to say the least. The exterior looks very beautiful and perhaps much more beautiful than most boats today. Its large aft cabin accommodation is a top drawer while the space separating en suite heads and shower compartments are considered a bonus.

If you were to board the French-built Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46, you'll agree that the high-quality of workmanship, layout, and efficient use of space is quite exciting, to say the least. This cat remains very popular among sailors thanks to its easy handling features and incredible performance under the sails. Well, this may not come as a surprise to many of us given that the Fountain Pajot is known for building some of the most remarkable cruising catamarans out there that it can be quite overwhelming to narrow down to a single vessel, but the Bahia 46 simply stands out.

This vessel is designed with hulls that are broader than those of many other catamarans. It's also designed with centerboards and daggerboards that are meant to enhance its performance. These are essential in minimizing draft while ensuring reliability, generous bilge, and in helping to protect the rudders and propellers.

This boat is big enough to manage any type of serious offshore sailing. This is one of the best cruising catamarans for anyone looking for the right vessel for long-distance sailing. This vessel has a very more generous rig than most cruising catamarans, which is essential in enhancing its performance. The six-post Bimini is very strong and clean and can perfectly hold dinghies.

In terms of its look, the Bahia 36 is designed with gorgeous lines with the deck and hulls sculpted with lines that add a touch of elegance to the overall look of an already excellent catamaran sailboat.

Gemini 105MC

Whether you're looking for a comfortable catamaran vessel to take you for a weekend sailing trip or a long sabbatical vacation on the oceans, the Gemini 105MC is a very satisfactory liveaboard catamaran vessel that offers spacious accommodation, thoughtful design, and a stable cruising platform for anyone who wants to have some good time on the water.

Designed by the legendary Tony Smith, this is somewhat a sailing cottage. Like a land cottage, it is cozy, comfortable, and very safe. This is essentially a 35 feet catamaran that offers great value for any sailing looking for a reasonably-priced catamaran sailboat for the weekend or holiday cruising.

This boat is designed with incredibly slim hulls, which are teardrop-shaped with flat bottoms and smaller wetted surface area. Everyone is talking about multihulls these days, but how should canny buyers approach the idea of a cat? Nigel Irens has some thoughts

You’ve probably picked up on the fact that you can’t expect miracles from these boats in terms of exciting sailing. There are a couple of good reasons for this: firstly any catamaran that has performance potential will be more expensive to buy and maintain than the boats used in the cost-sensitive charter market.

Secondly, and more important, the more exciting the catamaran is to sail the more skill is needed to keep both boat and crew safe, and certainly in the charter market the constraint of offering chartering only to those who are already experienced multihull sailors would be seriously to limit the viability of the fleet. Presumably for similar reasons all but a few specialised car-hire companies send you off in a Ford Focus rather than a Ferrari F12.

The charter market accounts for a big proportion of annual catamaran sales, and future developments are likely to reflect the ever-growing demand for inexpensive boats with maximum living space.

This simple truth explains why quite a high proportion of charter fleets is now composed of power catamarans. In a way this is an honest response to market demands. If (as is likely) the demand for something ‘roomy and cheap’ among charterers continues, it is clear that there comes a point where so little sailing performance remains that there is not much motivation left for bothering with sails at all.

Travelling on a well-designed power catamaran, on the other hand, can be quite a pleasurable experience and can obviously get the charter party to where they want to go in a rapid and seamanlike way.

More performance please

The private owner market is quite different and, although the ‘roomy and cheap’ boats will attract some private buyers, there will be many more whose priorities are different and whose enthusiasm for sailing puts performance quite high up on their wishlist.

To this end buyers will be studying the long-established (and absolute) rule about how the cost/space/performance equation works. This can best be illustrated by drawing an equilateral triangle and placing the words ‘Fast’, ‘Spacious’ and ‘Inexpensive’ at each apex of the triangle. If a cursor (your pencil?) is placed in the triangle you’ll soon see that as you move closer to any one apex you move further away from the other two.

The degree to which cost increases if both ‘Spacious and ‘Fast’ are dialled up cannot be overstated. The straight line on the triangle between these two qualities assumes that as Living Space increases so Performance drops.

But recent years have seen the beginning of a new breed of catamaran that manages to deliver both these qualities to an impressive degree. The only trouble is that the ‘Inexpensive’ apex is likely to be a very long way away – not least because these kinds of boats are usually only available as custom builds which, by definition, means you need to double the already high amount you first thought of…

Semi-custom route

Back on Planet Earth there are one or two builders in Europe (such as Multimarine in the UK) who are producing semi-custom catamarans in the 32-50ft range that are both liveaboard-friendly and yet satisfying to cruise or race – at a price that is not as high as you might think.

Most people are aware that a catamaran naturally offers a useful selection of cruising attributes – plenty of room, low heel angle, good visibility from inside, shallow draught, ability to take the ground and unsinkability. To have all that in a boat that can also realistically compete in races such as the Round Britain and Ireland Race – or even a transatlantic race – is quite special, and something that only a catamaran can offer.

A performance catamaran is easy to spot – most obviously because it is less bulky than a basic space-orientated one, but a closer inspection will reveal various ‘go-fast’ devices that define the breed.

You’ll easily spot the fact that the mast is taller than that of a pure cruising boat – and if it’s a wingmast you’re probably looking at a carbon fibre structure. These devices are great for getting the best out of an already fast boat, but putting one on an already slow one would be a complete waste of time and money – comparable to putting an elaborate airfoil on the back of an otherwise bog-standard Mondeo.

You’ll have heard a lot about foils in recent years. Actually rudders and centreboards have always been called foils, but since the 2012 America’s Cup the term has been almost exclusively used to identify the underwater wings that lift those amazing boats out of the water as they accelerate.

This was an intriguing expression of what can be achieved with ingenuity (and very deep pockets), but it is not something that will have even the tiniest bit of trickle-down effect on the lives of the rest of us in our lifetimes.

If you plan to get hold of a catamaran that has at least some claim to performance then it should have deployable centreboards rather than the stub-keels fitted to basic cruising cats. If it’s performance you’re after then these devices are a good cost-effective starting point.

Performance-enhancing gadgets

Beyond that the sky is the limit, so it’s important to consider each performance-enhancing gadget in terms of its cost compared with its potential for improving performance. A rotating wingmast, for example, is an iconic way of saying ‘we’re serious about performance’, but maybe the money would have been better deployed in reducing weight in the structure. You can’t see that weightsaving, but it’s possible that it is more effective in cost-benefit terms.

You would think that modern materials and build techniques would always result in lighter, more agile boats, but it is easy to prove that as far as cruising boats (of all sorts – both sail and power) are concerned this is not usually the case. The added weight of a vast range of comfort-enhancing equipment produced to meet a modern buyer’s expectations often results in a net increase in performance-sapping weight.

The best way to ensure that everyone gets what they want out of their boat is through a process of education. There are no miracles out there and a manufacturer that encourages buyers to believe in the impossible does so at its peril. The glossy brochure needs to be backed up by the solid truths that emerge from half an hour spent studying that equilateral triangle – customarily drawn on the back of a serviette over lunch.

His career began when he studied Boatyard Management at what is now Solent University before opening a sailing school in Bristol and later moving to a multihull yard. He and a friend, Mark Pridie, won their class in the 1978 Round Britain race in a salvaged Dick Newick-designed 31-footer. Later, in 1985, he won the Round Britain Race with Tony Bullimore with whom he was jointly awarded Yachtsman of the Year.

His first major design success came in 1984 when his 80ft LOA catamaran Formule Tag set a new 24-hour run, clocking 518 miles. During the 1990s it was his designs that were dominant on the racecourse: Mike Birch’s Fujicolour , Philippe Poupon’s Fleury Michon VIII , Tony Bullimore’s Apricot . Most famous of all was Ellen MacArthur’s 75ft trimaran B&Q, which beat the solo round the world record in 2005.

His designs have included cruising and racing boats, powerboats and monohulls, but it is multis he is best known for.

Applications Open for the 2024 Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup

The Rose Cup is an invitational event open to sailors who have reached their 16th birthday but not their 21st birthday during the calendar year in which the event is held (i.e., must be born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008). The Championship features world-class coaching and serves as an outstanding training ground for young sailors who are passionate about match racing and focused on competing at the next level.

“We are very pleased to see the competitive group of applicants we have received to date and welcome additional applications for everyone interested,” said Ryan Davidson, USYMRC Committee Chair. “This years event at Corinthian Yacht Club is not one you will want to miss!”

Applications submitted by April 1 will receive preference. Request an invitation here: https://form.jotform.com/240095124431143 . Competitors are asked to provide their top three match and fleet racing accomplishments over the past three years, and to write briefly about their experience racing on a 3-4 person keelboat.

Teams consist of crews of four, with at least one male and one female and a maximum crew weight of 660 pounds. Teams may be composed of members from different yacht clubs or sailing associations.

The Rose Cup started as an invitational youth match racing event in 2010. It was founded by members of Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California, and the Newport-Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association. Its mission is to assist in the promotion of youth match racing in the United States and improve the quality of US competitors in national and international competition.

Thanks primarily to the efforts of US Sailing Match Racing Committee Vice-Chair and five-time US Match Racing Champion, Dave Perry, US Sailing made the event one of its three match racing championships, and it officially became the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship in 2015.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Three escaped inmates from the eastern Caribbean island of Grenada were charged in the killing of a U.S. couple whose catamaran they hijacked, police said Thursday.

Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; Atiba Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Trevon Robertson, a 23-year-old unemployed man, were charged with capital murder, escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus also was charged with one count of rape, according to a statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force.

The men appeared in court on Thursday and were ordered held in prison until their hearing in late March.

They were accused of escaping from a police holding cell on Feb. 18 and hijacking a catamaran owned by Ralph Henry and Kathy Brandel while they were aboard. Authorities said they believe the couple was thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to nearby St. Vincent, where they were arrested on Feb. 21.

The three men were ordered deported from St. Vincent on Monday.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association described Hendry and Brandel as “veteran cruisers” who participated in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and had planned to spend the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

Their bodies have not been found.

Drone flying toward Moscow downed in Elektrostal

MOSCOW, November 19. A drone flying to Moscow has been downed by air defense systems in Elektrostal in the Moscow Region, no one was hurt, Moscow’s Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on Sunday.

"In the Elektrostal municipal district, air defense forces repelled an attack by a drone, which was flying toward Moscow. According to preliminary data, its fragments fell down incurring no damage. No one was hurt," he wrote on his Telegram channel .

According to the Moscow mayor, emergencies services are working on the site.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
