Sanlorenzo Yachts: The Italian Odyssey of Craftsmanship and Elegance

Sanlorenzo yachts , throughout their illustrious journey, have become the epitome of luxury, precision, and forward-thinking. Born in the picturesque landscapes of Italy, this brand has progressively made an indelible imprint on the global yacht-making panorama, fashioning vessels that perfectly amalgamate elegance with power. Dive in as we unravel the rich tapestry of Sanlorenzo’s history and its awe-inspiring models.

The Origins

Sanlorenzo’s inception can be traced back to the serene town of Ameglia, located in La Spezia, Italy, in the year 1958. The visionary behind this monumental endeavor was none other than Giovanni Jannetti . A yachtsman with immense passion and a vision for the future, Jannetti laid down the cornerstone of what would later become an empire of luxury yachting. Right from the embryonic stages, Sanlorenzo was unwavering in its mission: to sculpt high-end, bespoke motoryachts that would set the gold standard in the industry.

Philosophy and Craftsmanship

At the heart of Sanlorenzo’s ethos lies an unyielding dedication to impeccable quality, pioneering innovation, and unparalleled luxury. This is not just a business for them; it’s an art, a craft that has been honed over decades. Every yacht birthed from their shipyards is not merely a vessel; it’s a narrative, a tangible manifestation of its owner’s dreams, aspirations, and personality.

This commitment to personalization is deeply rooted in their belief that yachting is an intimate experience. It’s about the sun kissing your skin as you stand on the deck, the gentle lull of the waves, the quiet conversations in the luxurious lounges, and the thrill of navigating the vast expanse of the sea. And to ensure that every moment onboard is an embodiment of the owner’s vision, Sanlorenzo has amassed a formidable team. Comprising expert craftsmen, visionary designers, and ingenious engineers, this team is the lifeblood that gives shape to dreams.

Every facet of the yacht, from the sleek contours of the hull to the intricate details of the interiors, is meticulously crafted. The choice of materials, the layout, the technological innovations, and even the ambient lighting – everything is tailored to resonate with the owner’s unique essence.

Embracing Innovations: The Fiberglass Revolution

In the annals of yachting history, there have been many materials of choice for constructing vessels, ranging from wood to metals. However, Sanlorenzo’s decision to incorporate fiberglass as a primary material was nothing short of revolutionary. During a time when the industry was still deeply rooted in traditional boat-building methods, Sanlorenzo’s move towards fiberglass showcased their forward-thinking ethos.

Fiberglass, known for its durability, strength, and flexibility, ushered in a new era for yacht construction. Not only did it offer superior longevity compared to traditional materials, but it also allowed for more innovative designs, streamlined production processes, and reduced maintenance requirements. By being at the forefront of this shift, Sanlorenzo positioned itself not just as a follower of trends, but as a harbinger of change, cementing its reputation as an industry pioneer.

Broadening Horizons: The Global Expansion

From its humble beginnings in Italy, Sanlorenzo embarked on a journey to take its signature craftsmanship and innovation to the world. Recognizing the global allure of luxury yachting, the brand strategically expanded its footprint to major yachting hubs. From the azure waters of the Mediterranean to the bustling coasts of the Americas and the exotic shores of Asia, Sanlorenzo’s emblem became synonymous with luxury and innovation.

But expansion wasn’t merely about sales and brand presence. Sanlorenzo understood the paramount importance of post-sales service in the luxury yachting sphere. As a result, they established an impressive network of service centers across the globe. These centers, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and helmed by experts, ensure that Sanlorenzo yacht owners receive unparalleled service and assistance. Whether it’s routine maintenance, bespoke modifications, or emergency services, owners are guaranteed top-tier support, irrespective of where they choose to sail.

Sanlorenzo Yachts: A Spotlight on Their Masterpieces

Though each Sanlorenzo creation is a testament to impeccable craftsmanship, a few have truly captured the world’s attention. Here’s a quick dive into some of these iconic models.

SL78: Elegance Meets Functionality

sanlorenzo yacht wiki

The SL78 is more than just a yacht; it’s a statement. As an integral member of the renowned SL line, the SL78 is the epitome of refined elegance and unmatched versatility. At first glance, its sleek silhouette and polished exteriors promise luxury, and the interiors do not disappoint.

What truly sets the SL78 apart, however, is its prodigious outdoor spaces. Whether you’re an ardent sun-seeker or someone who revels in alfresco entertainment, the yacht’s expansive flybridge is a dream come true. Imagine lounging under the sun, a cocktail in hand, as the yacht slices through azure waters. Or hosting a lavish dinner party under the stars, the gentle sea breeze adding to the ambiance. The SL78 doesn’t just offer a yachting experience; it promises a lifestyle.

Sanlorenzo 52Steel: The Majestic Marvel

sanlorenzo yacht wiki

There’s something undeniably regal about the Sanlorenzo 52Steel . This steel-hulled superyacht, as its name suggests, stands tall in Sanlorenzo’s fleet, boasting features that are as innovative as they are luxurious.

The 52Steel promises unparalleled comfort with its seven opulent cabins. Whether you’re the owner or a privileged guest, the yacht guarantees a stay that rivals the finest five-star resorts. But the true magic lies in its under-lower deck, a feature not commonly found in many yachts. Add to this an innovative beach club at the stern, and you have a yacht that redefines luxury at sea.

SX88: The Best of Both Worlds

sanlorenzo yacht wiki

The SX88 is Sanlorenzo’s answer to those torn between the allure of flying bridge yachts and the rugged charm of explorer yachts. A remarkable member of the SX line, the SX88 is a masterful crossover, blending the best of both worlds.

Its design is a celebration of open spaces. The yacht’s interiors flow seamlessly into its exteriors, erasing the boundaries between indoor comfort and outdoor extravagance. Whether you’re enjoying a movie in the plush living area or soaking in the panoramic sea views from the deck, the SX88 ensures that you’re always one with the ocean.

Embracing Eco-friendly Technologies

Sanlorenzo’s dedication to the environment is evident in the technological strides they’ve made. Recognizing the implications of traditional propulsion systems on the environment, the company has been at the forefront of adopting hybrid propulsion systems. These advanced systems, which combine conventional engines with electric drive modes, play a pivotal role in reducing harmful emissions. This not only limits the carbon footprint of their yachts but also ensures a quieter, smoother sailing experience, redefining luxury cruising for the better.

Mindful Material Sourcing

Beyond technological innovations, Sanlorenzo’s commitment to the environment shines through in their choice of materials. The company places a strong emphasis on sourcing materials that are not only durable and luxurious but also sustainable. This means favoring materials that have a minimal environmental impact, are recyclable, or come from sustainable sources. By doing so, Sanlorenzo ensures that the opulence they offer doesn’t come at the planet’s expense.

Sanlorenzo yachts are not merely vessels cruising the ocean; they are emblematic of a legacy – a legacy of Italian finesse, path-breaking design, and unparalleled luxury. Yet, what truly sets them apart is their vision for the future. As Sanlorenzo sails ahead, charting its course in the vast seas of the yachting industry, it does so with an unwavering commitment to its heritage and an eye on sustainability. Whether you’re a connoisseur of luxury yachts or someone passionate about sustainable innovations, Sanlorenzo stands as a beacon, proving that luxury and responsibility can, indeed, sail together.

Sanlorenzo’s Asymmetric SL106A Reviewed

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • July 1, 2022

Sanlorenzo SL106A

Any time a company deviates from “the norm,” eyebrows raise. This is especially true in yachting, which remains a fairly conservative industry in terms of design. Traditional looks still sell, so many builders play it pretty safe, as is evident at any boat show where attendees are incredulous upon seeing a radically different yacht.

Massimo Perotti, the chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo , knows the feeling. When the shipyard announced the addition of Asymmetric models to its SL series, the news was met with “a bit of skepticism,” he says. These Asymmetric models push usable interior space out to the full beam on one side—and only one side, where there’s no traditional side deck.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

Captains and crew accustomed to having two side decks to handle lines and get around the yacht were worried. Customers could have been too, but funny enough, the customers liked it. Then, the captains and crew came around.

“The market has been receiving the Asymmetric idea very well,” Perotti says, adding that acceptance came partly because the side deck isn’t actually removed; it’s just moved. When owners see and feel the difference in the interior, and how much it enhances their connection to the cruising environment, they’re sold.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

The idea behind the Asymmetric line dates back several years. Sanlorenzo was wrestling with how to provide owners with more usable interior space. An initial idea was a widebody design, in which the main-deck interior spans the yacht’s full beam. Sanlorenzo quickly decided that wasn’t practical for smaller to midsize superyachts. So, Perotti sought the input of designer Chris Bangle, with whom Sanlorenzo has been working since 2015. Bangle is known for shaking up the designs of Fiat and BMW. He came up with the notion of a widebody to one side to benefit owners along with a full side deck opposite, as well as an over-the-widebody passage from the flybridge to the bow to benefit the crew.

Sanlorenzo then tapped Zuccon International Project and its own design department to make the concept float. The first Asymmetric model, the SL102A, debuted in May 2018, with about a dozen contracts coming in less than a year. After that, customers began asking for a slightly longer aft deck and swim platform, which resulted in the creation of the SL106A.

If you’re still trying to wrap your brain around the asymmetry, rest assured that the SL106A doesn’t look lopsided. In fact, unless you know to look for the difference, you may not even notice it at first.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

There is still a side deck to starboard, and the twin stairways leading from the swim platform to the main deck aft are what you’re used to seeing. The same is true when you view the vessel bow-on or in aerial photos. Handrail-lined side decks—truly dedicated passageways outboard of the leisure areas—on the flybridge lend aesthetic balance.

For the remaining skeptics, consider that most flybridge yachts don’t provide a way for the crew to reach the foredeck from up top. The SL106A has a few stairs on the widebody side. Crew also can access the flybridge via an alfresco floating stairway aft and to port on the main deck, or by way of steps from the raised pilothouse (a configuration that’s hidden until you step aboard).

As for the extra interior space, the one-sided widebody adds nearly 108 square feet to the main deck. Much of it is used in the open-plan salon and dining area, where most owners and guests spend their time when they’re not swimming or otherwise enjoying the great outdoors. Additionally, a nearly sole-to-ceiling window is on the widebody side. Guests can practically stand right up against it, lending the sensation of hovering directly above the water. Sliding glass doors and a deploying balcony opposite, along with the 23-foot beam, add to the roomy feel.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

The main-deck master stateroom also feels airy because of a rectangular port forward, directly over the bed. (Where so many builders position the en suite head; Sanlorenzo situates it along the portside entry.) This stateroom has a door to the starboard-side deck. Push a button, and there’s access to the foredeck settee with a table for a private breakfast or snack. A few steps up on the port side are a sun pad and the stairs to the flybridge.

In challenging conventional notions of how a yacht has to look and function, Sanlorenzo actually includes new ways to get around. And the SL106A is still a 10-guest, 28-knot yacht. That is about as traditional as they come.

Sanlorenzo SL106A

Fueling the Future

Sanlorenzo is exploring alternatives to traditional diesel fuel. In partnership with Siemens Energy, it’s developing a superyacht with methanol fuel-cell systems to generate electricity—a proven technology that has never been used in yachting. Delivery of the 164-footer is expected in 2024.

Sanlorenzo Arts

Recognizing that its customers regularly attend major art fairs, Sanlorenzo has a global partnership agreement for the Art Basel events in Hong Kong, Switzerland and Miami through 2023. The shipyard created Sanlorenzo Arts to better connect its brand to the art world, collaborating with artists for special exhibitions.

Sanlorenzo created its High-End Services division in 2020 to enhance customer relationships. Services include leasing and financing, crew training at the Sanlorenzo Academy, as well as maintenance and refit through Sanlorenzo Timeless. The builder is augmenting the division this year to increase client loyalty and attract new buyers.

Sanlorenzo’s extra-cool SX superyacht

  • February 29, 2024

With a hull destined for Southeast Asia, the new SX100 is the fourth model in Sanlorenzo’s explorer-styled ‘crossover’ flybridge series, with fold-down terraces expanding the waterside experience in the beach zone. Words: Clare Mahon; Photos: Sanlorenzo & Guillaume Plisson

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

The SX100 reaches 23 knots with four 800hp Volvo Penta IPS pod drives

Sanlorenzo says its SX series of yachts blurs the boundaries between flybridge and explorer-type yachts, with the X representing the ‘cross’ in crossover. The new SX100, the range’s latest model, has exterior lines by Zuccon International Project like those on the SX112, SX88 and SX76 that came before her, with reverse-angle windscreens giving a robust, explorer-yacht look.

Hull one showcases interiors by Piero Lissoni, who is also Sanlorenzo’s Artistic Director, although future SX100 owners can create or commission their own bespoke layouts and designs.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

SX signatures include an enormous aft lower deck

Furthermore, the crossover doesn’t end with yacht types. A strong accent on ease of outdoor living and quick access to the water means the boundaries that divide indoors from out are blended so much that the only logical way to begin a tour of the yacht is from an outdoor space.

WATERSIDE LIVING

The main saloon is usually a yacht’s largest area and the centrepiece that sets the tone for an onboard experience. Not so aboard the SX100, where the stern deck is a huge expanse of free and open space that’s much more than a swim platform.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Distinguished by reverse-angled windscreens, the SX series features exterior lines by Zuccon

When the space is not being used to store the 5.65m tender and water toys, it becomes an area without barriers between guests and the sea. The pieds dans l’eau effect is multiplied exponentially when, at the touch of a button, two spacious side terraces open out over the water.

An up/down platform fully aft is for getting in and out of the water and deploying toys, while a crane for launching the tender is integrated into one of the arches over the side terraces.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Drop-down sides increase space and views, including from the beach lounge

Teak benches fold down over the mooring equipment, both concealing it and offering a very handy spot for putting on swimming fins. It’s a real shot of luxury lifestyle for those who enjoy the outdoors, whether swimming, sailing or soaking up the sun.

Lowering the terraces also opens the side views in the lower-deck lounge, which is accessed through a sliding glass door in the centre of a full-width screen of windows that are slanted at a similar angle to the SX’s iconic windscreens.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Port view of the lower-deck ‘beach lounge’, which has fixed aft windows either side of the sliding door

Set slightly lower than the aft deck, the lounge has a red-lacquer bar to port along with chairs, coffee tables, a sofa to starboard and mirror-lined walls, so you see the water no matter which way you’re facing. And when the terraces are down, the aft deck and beach lounge become one integrated zone that can be enjoyed from dawn to dusk.

OPEN INTERIORS

The slender, ‘floating’ external staircase up to the main deck’s aft cockpit is enclosed in glass, while the same beautiful, curved glass used to encase the lower-deck lounge is used in the cockpit’s glass railings.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

The saloon includes a starboard staircase down to the lower deck and, forward, a concealed wooden staircase to the flybridge

Rather than just a gateway to the saloon, the cockpit is more of a continuation of the stern deck, with the two spaces connecting both philosophically and ergonomically. The cockpit is large enough for sun loungers and side tables due to the absence of an external staircase leading to the flybridge.

Lissoni explains the lack of a traditional feature: “It used to be that a yacht and everything aboard it had to be made by a yacht designer, but I’m not a nautical designer and I don’t want to become one. I’m an architect, and when I design a yacht, I approach it just as I would any other project, aiming to create something functional, comfortable and beautiful. Outsiders like me have changed the rules in yachting.”

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Port view of the saloon

Only a tour of the SX100’s interiors in the ‘Lissoni version’ reveals just how true that is. In his edition of the interior, the saloon is a display space for iconic design pieces arranged in a large, open space where glass, both in the form of windows and mirrored surfaces, seems to be the main building material.

Built-in pieces are limited in number and blend into the yacht’s structure while natural woods offer a subtle backdrop to an area where nothing glistens or sparkles but everything shines. Signature Lissoni elements include a steely, sculptural, spiral staircase to starboard that leads to the lower deck, while forward is a slender wooden staircase that leads to the flybridge and can be concealed behind a decorative screen.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Stairs linking the lower and main decks

Lissoni’s approach to yacht interiors revolves around spaces that are as open and as contemporary as possible.

“I’ve never understood the ‘Lord Nelson’ approach to nautical design. Yachts are ultra-technological pieces of machinery, so why all the tradition? We’re modern people living today, so why not design an interior that reflects that. In my opinion, everything used aboard a yacht should be commercial because industrial designers are better attuned than nautical designers to how we live today.”

FORWARD MASTER

The SX100 has Lissoni’s preferred layout for yachts in this series, with the owner’s cabin fore on the main deck in a spot normally used for the helm in traditional 100ft motor yachts. Featuring an aft facing bed, the cabin has excellent visibility and textured glass is used for the closet and bathroom walls to keep things light and airy.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

The forward room on the main deck can be a master suite with an aft-facing bed or a dining room

Other options for this space on the SX100 include a formal dining room. In either layout, a port side door offers quick access to the foredeck, which has a large sofa, table and lots of sun pads that can be spread out over the mooring gear when the yacht is stationary.

The lower deck is home to three en-suite guest cabins: a double, a twin and a VIP set just opposite the galley. All cabins have interior walls set slightly off the yacht’s centreline and exterior walls that follow the curve of its hull shape. The bottom deck also has crew cabins for five and a crew mess near the galley.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Forward of the main-deck master suite, the bow lounge has a large C-shaped sofa that can be covered by a bimini, plus a huge sunbathing area

Like previous SX yachts, the SX100 only has one helm and it’s on a table fore on the flybridge, featuring four Raymarine screens and Volvo Penta IPS joystick commands. The covered area, which includes a dining area and bar, can be left open in nice weather or sealed off by electrically operated windows and sliding doors.

The aft section of the fly is another outdoor area for sun and fun, with a glass balustrade so guests can enjoy the views from on high.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

While Lissoni always says he approaches the interiors of the SX series as if he were designing a residential building, the SX100 was born to run and has a fast displacement hull. Access to the engine room under the stern deck is from a deck hatch or a small door on the starboard side of the beach club.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Forward view of the flybridge, which the protected helm forward

Propulsion comes from four Volvo Penta D13-IPS pods with twin counter-rotating propellers designed to improve performance, manoeuvrability and range while reducing fuel consumption, noise and vibrations. The propulsion system delivers a top speed of 23 knots and a range of 1,600nm at 10 knots, while the engine, transmission and drive have integrated helm-to-prop Electronic Vessel Control (EVC).

Lissoni’s approach has given the SX100 an unusual setup and a chic, home-like look that crosses the boundaries between residential architecture and nautical design. The continuous connection, both visual and physical, between the yacht and the environment around it crosses the divide between indoors and out.

Sanlorenzo, SX100, SX112, SX88, SX76, Piero Lissoni, Artistic Director

Asia’s first SX100 is set to arrive this summer

Add explorer looks combined with flybridge performance and you have the SX100, a crossover yacht that crosses over a lot more than just genres of yachts.

The Sanlorenzo shipyard has been building high quality motor yachts since 1958. It is a boutique firm in the yachting industry, building only a limited number of made to measure units per year. Each yacht is designed and produced according to the specific requests, style, and desires of the individual owner.

The shipyard's headquarters are located in Ameglia. The yachts divisions are also based in Viareggio and in Massa, while the production of superyachts is located in the La Spezia shipyard.

Building a Sanlorenzo takes time and passion; that's why the shipyard can satisfy only 50 customers a year. In more than half century the shipyard has built about 1,000 yachts.

Over a period of eight years, Sanlorenzo has climbed the global order book ranking. Today, Sanlorenzo ranks at the first positions among the top 20 builders of yachts over 24m.

Sanlorenzo Unveils Two Innovative New Yachts at the Venice Boat Show

During this week's salone nautico venezia, sanlorenzo unveiled a "smart performance" 110-footer and the sd90s—with the "s" for sustainability., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.

Sanlorenzo's SP110 Yacht profile

During this week’s Salone Nautico Venezia, or Venice Boat Show, Sanlorenzo Yachts announced two new yachts that would appear in the fall. This nautical preview includes the SD90/s, the entry-level model in its SD line, and the SP110, which is part of the Italian builder’s new “smart performance” segment.

The company announced the two models at the Palazzo Franchetti, part of Venice’s Biennale Arte 2022.  Sanlorenzo is a sponsor of the Italian Pavilion. Italian architect and Sanlorenzo’s director of art Piero Lissoni created an installation/gathering point at the Biennale called the Arena.

Lissoni was also instrumental in designing the interior of the SP110. The initial drawings, the 110-footer carries off a minimalist design, both inside and out, that the builder says combines sustainability with innovation. Sanlorenzo assembled a design dream team that included Bernardo Zuccon for the exteriors, Tilli Antonelli, founder of Wider Yachts and now with Sanlorenzo, to create the concept, Marco Arnaboldi for the hull and, as noted, Lissoni for the interior.

The smart-performance concept is a clever one, using three smaller engines with hydrojet propulsion to provide the best weight-to-power ratio, mated with a hull design that, depending on speed and sea conditions, allows the boat run on different engines. The hydrojets, which are less sensitive than propellers to the boat’s weight, add to the boat’s fuel efficiency. The design team also made the 110-footer extremely wide, with a beam that maxes out at 26 feet, to add stability in rough seas as well as provide generous interior and exterior space.

Zuccon’s exterior is an eclectic combination of proportions, aerodynamic lines, high forward bulwarks and an open stern. The team gave it a brighter set of colors more reminiscent of a sport yacht than the traditional look of Sanlorenzo’s larger motoryachts. The boat also has a group of solar panels connected to lithium batteries that allow it to run the “house” systems (lights, electricity and air conditioning) for several hours without turning on the generators.

Lissoni’s interior matches the minimalist look of the exterior with large open spaces and nonstop floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s a nice layering effect across the decks—including the galley between the main and pilothouse decks—that accentuates the openness and accessibility of the interior. It promises to be one of the most innovative designs in the 100-foot class at the fall shows.

The bow, which is typically the working end of many of these yachts, was transitioned into dining and sunbathing areas. That’s a novel concept since most al-fresco dining areas are either on the stern or on a flybridge.

But the cockpit is arguably the most important outdoor area of the boat. Measuring 540 square feet, the space is wide open, connected to the interior hallway through full-width glass door that allows visibility from all three levels inside. A garage below hides the tender when not in use.

The SD90s, the entry-level model joining the line’s existing SD96 and SD118, actually put sustainability in its title with the small “s.” The 90-footer incorporates a hybrid propulsion system that Sanlorenzo has developed with Siemens—the two are also working on a methanol fuel-cell system—to limit carbon emissions. The shape of the running surface lets the boat perform well in “zero-emissions” electric-motor mode, between 6 and 10 knots, as well as with its diesel engines up to 17 knots.

Beyond the hybrid setup, Sanlorenzo also incorporated sustainable materials throughout the interior and exterior, including recycled glass in the bow wall, wood paneling with a sustainable finish and recycled terrazzo tiles in the heads.

The small “s” in the SD90s stands for sustainability. That includes a hybrid propulsion system, recycled materials across the interior and special eco-finishes to make the yacht greener.  Courtesy Sanlorenzo Yachts

Patricia Urquiola’s interior has what she calls a “transformable” design. That includes loose furniture and adaptable configurations throughout the boat. In the main salon the convertible layout lets the owner add or take out a dining area at will. The lower deck also has a nifty space near the stairway: It’s a lounge that can be closed off with sliding doors and turned into a stateroom with its sofa bed.

Sanlorenzo has been a leader with interesting designs over the past three years, pushing yachting in its own direction. The real-life versions of the SP110 and SD90/s, part of that trend, should generate plenty of brand buzz at the Cannes and Genoa shows in September.
