Boat of the Week: Inside ‘Secret,’ the Lavish 271-Foot Superyacht Owned by Walmart Heiress Nancy Walton Laurie

It would take the sale of approximately 5.75 million HP ink cartridges to fund the $92 million purchase of superyacht Secret , currently listed for sale with Burgess. The ink cartridges were one of Walmart’s top-selling products in 2021, and might well have contributed to a successful year of yachting for Secret ’s owner, Walmart heiress and philanthropist Nancy Walton Laurie.

As the largest yacht on display at last month’s MYBA Charter Show in Barcelona, and one of three yachts reportedly owned by Laurie, the 271-foot beauty built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2013 provides some insight into the family’s tastes and preferences.

The main salon’s bold color scheme by interior designer Jim Harris mixes pillar-box red sofas and carpets with ornate gold wall art. It’s a brave step change from the neutral beige and gray tones often selected by owners, typically with resale value in mind.

The designers also moved the formal dining room to the upper deck, leaving a large entertaining space to watch sports and socialize. A monochrome marble bar with a glass backdrop, views to the main deck aft and an onboard mixologist all help to set the tone. When it comes onboard socializing, Secret pulls no punches.

Guests arrive via the lower deck beach club or the main deck side entrance, where luggage can be ushered into the color-coded lower deck guest cabins. There are some unusual perks to being a guest aboard Secret . Heated bathroom floors feature across all guest suites, while guest mattresses are singles that zip together into doubles for greater flexibility.

The upper-deck, full-beam master suite, named Chanel to reflect the black-and-champagne silk color scheme, is highly personalized. Separate his and her en suites have their own amenities: Hers has a full-sized bath, and his has higher countertops to accommodate former basketball player and owner Bill Laurie’s 6’ 4” height. Both have steam showers. The private office is considerably smaller than the VIP office to accommodate the owner’s request for an oversized walk-in wardrobe.

Secret is a boat owned by the Walton family of Walmart

The most surprising area on board is the “Valentina” main deck VIP guest suite, named after the Valentina-inspired white spiked headboard. The master has sea views and a private terrace, but the full-beam VIP, decorated and claimed by Laurie’s adult daughter when her family is on board, is arguably the superior option. It shares the same footprint as the master but enjoys a greater attention to detail. The ensuite, decorated in black-and-white stripes, has two day heads—one with bidet—and a central wet room fitted with a shower and full-sized bathtub.

The monochrome décor is echoed throughout the yacht, from the upper-deck sky lounge to the guest hallways. In the 12-person cinema, red Porsche leather armchairs are mirrored in the leather ceiling panels. The dedicated treatment room enjoys an onboard beautician and masseuse who specializes in hot Swedish massage.

A glass elevator connects the lower deck to the bridge deck, where an indoor glass-fronted gym and outdoor pool are located. For sundown soaks, the sun deck Jacuzzi ticks the box.

Last refitted in 2018, the yacht started out life at 256 feet, with an additional 16 feet added to accommodate the owner’s choice of an aft deck dining table. It’s the preferred space to enjoy buffet-style breakfasts, protected from view by high bulwarks. Further al fresco dining for 14 people is available on the lower deck beach club, where a “dining under the stars” themed evening sees guests enjoy meals at the water’s edge beneath a blanket of twinkling LEDs and real constellations above.

For families and guests with a competitive spirit, the beach club, equipped with changing rooms and rain showers, is the center of watersports action. A serious collection of toys, including kneeboards, flyboards, trampolines and towables are matched by an inflatable assault course erected by the crew for “Sports Olympics.” The addition of a female water-sports instructor has proven popular with charter guests.  When the weather’s bad, the karaoke system comes to the rescue.

It’s no secret that smaller yachts in the 190-foot size range are proving more popular on the global charter market at present, preferred for their ability to access smaller ports and anchor close to shore. But Secret pulls out all the stops for guests looking to enjoy time aboard a yacht maxed out with amenities and personality, provided in a covert setting. All in all, definitely worth the printer cartridges.

Amels reveals first details of LE242 yacht New Secret

Dutch yard  Amels  has opened up about its latest 74 metre superyacht New Secret , which has lived up to her name until now.

Sold in September 2015 by Fraser Yachts , she was delivered in May as the second Amels Limited Editions 242 yacht with all details kept under wraps, but less than a month before her Monaco Yacht Show debut, the veil of secrecy has been partially lifted.

As with hull number one Plvs Vltra , the exterior lines come from the drawing board of renowned British designer  Tim Heywood , but New Secret differs from her sistership in having a completely white superstructure.

Moving inside and her interior styling was created by Winch Design on the owner's request. The yard describes her décor as having “a sophisticated and modern style”.

Rose Damen, commercial director at Amels, said: "The interior’s contrast with the first Amels 242 couldn’t be greater. It really shows the extent of customisation possible through the involvement of the owners. The exterior has a warm and tastefully discreet colour scheme, but there are also some significant customisations such as the extended eight-metre swimming pool on the main deck and the larger helipad on bridge deck.”

Unlike many of the yachts at the Monaco show, New Secret is not offered for sale or charter and on-board visits will be limited to VIPs only.

Built from a steel hull and aluminium superstructure to Lloyd's Class standards,  New Secret  is expected to be used for world cruising and features large exterior aft decks.

The layout of the master suite was of particular importance to the owner, along with the  superyacht spa  area. Five more guest cabins will provide total accommodation for up to 12 guests.

With a total fuel capacity of 155,000 litres, this four-deck yacht will boast a maximum cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12.5 knots.

Other superyacht projects currently under development at the Dutch yard include two further Limited Editions 242 yachts and  the first Amels 188 Limited Editions yacht , which is due for completion next year.

Ex-mcdonald’s chef reveals secret menu ‘monstrosity’ — and it’s a mc-ménage à trois.

Oh, it’s bangin’ ?

Forcing two rival sets of protein — beef and poultry — to come together in palate-pleasing peace and mouth-watering harmony is a Mickey D’s “monstrosity” that only true fast-foodies know about.

Until now, that is.

A screenshot of TikTok user and former McDonald's executive chef Mike Haracz.

“The McGangBang,” began ex-McDonald’s chef Mike Haracz, raving over the secret menu sandwich offered by the renown burger hut.

“If you’ve never heard of it,” he continued in a trending TikTok description with over 24,000 views, “it’s a double cheeseburger with a McChicken — it’s actually better with a spicy McChicken — in the middle of it.”

Haracz, virally known for unveiling some of Mcdonald’s’ most hush-hush formulas — like how to recreate the restaurant’s flawless French fry recipe at home or whether “shrinkflation” has caused a size reduction of its Fillet-o-Fish dish — went on to publicize the little known facts about the meaty mega-bite.

“It is part of a secret menu that McDonald’s had, and it was much more popular when the double cheeseburger, or the McDouble, and the McChickens were on the Dollar Menu,” he explained. “So you could get this massive burger and assemble it yourself for like two bucks.”

Haracz then challenged on-the-go grubbers to order the fatty patty-pile up during their next trip to the drive-thru.

“Everybody who is part of McDonald’s knows what it is, whether they want to admit it or not — or call it that,” he said. “I’m wondering, if you got to a McDonald’s and order a McGangBang, will they know what it is? Will they know how to make it? How will the give it to you?”

A "McGangBang."

“The other thing I’d like to know,” the bearded burger guru added, “if you do order a McGangBang from your local McDonald’s, how much does it cost now?.”

“Back in the day, you could order this monstrosity for $2.”

However, unfortunately for grease-loving gourmands, the price of the double-decked delectable has more than doubled.

“The [McGangBang] is still my regular order. used to be $4 for two of them. Costs me around $9 for both now,” chimed a less-than-cheery chowhound.

A McDonald's double cheeseburger.

“I got two I had to assemble myself and a large fry for $15,” another whined.

“We always called it the Mcénage à Trois,” joked a goofy eater.

But others warned that asking for the cheekily nicknamed snack could land some folks in a pickle.

“Depending on the McDonald’s,” penned a cautious commentator, “you may find yourself in a situation you were not prepared for.”

The Pentagon Has Broken Its Silence on UFOs and Secret Alien Relations

Here are the facts in the long-awaited, comprehensive new report.

ufo, unidentified flying object and the dome of the capitol usa 3d render, 3d rendering

  • The Department of Defense has found no evidence of any connection between UFOs and the national security state—or evidence of UFOs, for that matter.
  • The All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office conducted interviews, tested alleged alien materials, and investigated sightings.
  • The report attempts to debunk several narratives about the government and UFOs, including cooperation between the government and aliens, defense contractors reverse engineering UFO technology, and more.

The report was compiled by the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, an office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense that, in 2022, was tasked to investigate reports of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (what people in the U.S. government call UFOs). The 63 page report details the office’s investigation into claims that the U.S. government has some kind of secret UFO program going on—claims ranging from secret government knowledge of UFOs to actual relations between the government and extraterrestrial civilizations.

The report—which came out Friday, March 8th—apparently has a classified version, but it is unlikely to have anything new or different. AARO was led to believe that the difference in classification is likely due to discussion of sensitive or secret programs, as well as individuals, that are part of the secret UFO-government enterprise.

The Narratives

ufo secret

The report attempts to address two major narratives that AARO believes emerged about the U.S. government and UFOs. The first is the conspiracy theory that “the USG and industry partners are in possession of and are testing off-world technology that has been concealed from congressional oversight and the world since approximately 1964, and possibly since 1947, if the Roswell events are included.”

AARO states that it investigated a number of claims in this vein. One was that named corporations, likely well known U.S. defense contractors, were experimenting on alien technology. Another was that the U.S. government was in possession of exotic, otherworldly materials made by aliens. Others included a claim that a former U.S. military officer had touched a UFO, and a former U.S. service member had observed “U.S. Special Forces” loading materials into a UFO. Individuals interviewed by AARO claimed that “between 2004 and 2007 the White House requested a research institute in Virginia study the theoretical societal impacts of disclosing that UAP are extraterrestrial in origin”

The second narrative was that UFOs were somehow interfering with the U.S. nuclear arsenal, and that “a cluster of UAP sightings that occurred in close proximity to U.S. nuclear facilities have resulted in the malfunctioning and destruction of nuclear missiles .” If true, this would represent a substantial risk to the U.S. nuclear deterrent, leaving U.S. nuclear weapons vulnerable to an outside force that was at best unknown, and at worst, hostile.

The Debunking

f 117 nighthawk stealth fighter flies in death valley, california

The AARO report was unable to substantiate any of the various claims it investigated. None of the claims regarding UFO technology , U.S. government secret programs, or individuals with important information panned out. Many of the allegations appear to be based on hearsay or misunderstandings, or involved second or third hand information that ultimately went nowhere.

The report knocks down one allegation after another. The named companies denied being involved with reverse engineering UFO technology, and material allegedly recovered from aliens was actually a metal alloy made on Earth by humans . The military official who reportedly touched a UFO denied the event took place, suggesting whoever made the allegation was referring to an incident in which he actually touched a F-117A Nighthawk stealth fighter. The report on alien contact—allegedly commissioned by the White House—was real, but the U.S. government had nothing to do with it.

us army special forces soldiers provide security during a night joint training exercise in louisiana, march 8, 2014 special forces work in groups, organized in teams of 12 men, each specially trained and cross trained in different disciplines us army photo by spc travis jonesnot reviewed

The AARO report does not describe what the office found when it looked into the report of “special forces” loading materials into a UFO, but that is assumed to have not panned out, either.

The report results are not surprising. If there was clear and verifiable proof of U.S. government involvement with aliens , it probably would have surfaced a long time ago. It is also possible that such involvement is already heavily insulated from investigation, and that those who are or were involved are still sticking to sworn secrecy oaths—which, in government circles, come with serious consequences for those that violate them. Did the AARO report fully investigate the vastness of the military industrial complex? Maybe, and maybe not.

Eight Friends Built a Secret Apartment in a Mall and Hid There Undetected for Years; A New SXSW Documentary Explains How and Why

Secret Mall Apartment

When the Providence Place Mall was constructed in the late ’90s, it was touted by Rhode Island leaders as a sign of urban renewal for its struggling capital city. For eight artists, it became something else — home.

“The story is kind of a Trojan horse, where you go in expecting one thing and it’s constantly subverting your preconceptions as you watch it,” Workman says. “You hear the premise, and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is gonna be like one of those crazy prank movies.’ But it’s using that to explore these deeper ideas about art and what it means, as well as gentrification and how we’re living in the shadows of these corporations.”

Workman enlisted Jesse Eisenberg , the Oscar-nominated star of “The Social Network” and “Zombieland,” as a producer, a role he previously served on Workman’s “The World Before Your Feet,” a documentary about a man who walks every street in New York City. Eisenberg felt a personal connection to the story of the Providence Place infiltrators.

“As somebody in the arts, I just kept thinking that what they’re doing is so pure, and so perfect,” Eisenberg says. “It’s art for art’s sake. I kind of viewed it from that perspective. My favorite thing to do in my life is — I write plays, I finish my play, and we do a little reading, and it’s my favorite day of the year. And then unfortunately, it gets commodified. And we have to sell tickets, and it becomes this product. And so when I’m watching this movie, I’m just taken away as an artist, the purity of their art and that kind of imagination.”

Workman also had access to hours of footage that the friends took capturing life in their secret mall apartment, as well as the planning and building that went into pulling together their unlikely hideaway. Because mall personnel dismantled the structure after they discovered it, the filmmakers and the original artists built a replica of the apartment.

“It seemed only logical to redo that within this movie,” says Workman. “I needed to come up with a clever way to revisit a space that doesn’t exist anymore.”

Although the artists behind the mall apartment aren’t wealthy (some live on the economic margins), they were aware of certain benefits they enjoyed. The film points out, for example, that Townsend, who is white, didn’t have the same fears of law enforcement that a Black man might have carried.

“What’s so interesting about this film is the way that it becomes this larger discussion about housing, gentrification, urban development and even about class and race as these artists contemplate their own kind of privilege,” says Eisenberg. “They were allowed to do something on a lark without the threat of heavy policing.”

Now, the filmmakers will take “Secret Mall Apartment” to Austin, Texas, a city that’s undergone a turbo-charged version of gentrification in recent years even as it tries to remain true to its “keep Austin weird” credo.

“I feel like this is going to be really appreciated and understood there,” says Workman.

As for the Providence Place Mall, it’s seen better days. Amazon has upended the retail space, leading to a series of store closures and fewer shoppers. “They’re really struggling,” Workman says.

And Townsend — he’s still banned from setting foot in the mall he once called home.

Here’s an exclusive look at the teaser trailer for “Secret Mall Apartment”:

From Russia, Elaborate Tales of Fake Journalists

As the Ukraine war grinds on, the Kremlin has created increasingly complex fabrications online to discredit Ukraine’s leader and undercut aid. Some have a Hollywood-style plot twist.

superyacht new secret

By Steven Lee Myers

A young man calling himself Mohamed al-Alawi appeared in a YouTube video in August. He described himself as an investigative journalist in Egypt with a big scoop: The mother-in-law of Ukraine’s president had purchased a villa near Angelina Jolie’s in El Gouna, a resort town on the Red Sea.

The story, it turned out, was not true. Ukraine denied it, and the owner of the villa refuted it. Also disconnected from reality: Alawi’s claim to being a journalist.

Still, his story caromed through social media and news outlets from Egypt to Nigeria and ultimately to Russia — which, according to researchers, is where the story all began.

The story seemed to fade, but not for long. Four months later, two new videos appeared on YouTube. They said Mohamed al-Alawi had been beaten to death in Hurghada, a town about 20 miles south of El Gouna. The suspected killers, according to the videos: Ukraine’s secret service agents.

These claims were no more factual than the first, but they gave new life to the old lie. Another round of posts and news reports ultimately reached millions of internet users around the world, elevating the narrative so much that it was even echoed by members of the U.S. Congress while debating continued military assistance to Ukraine.

Ever since its forces invaded two years ago , Russia has unleashed a torrent of disinformation to try to discredit Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, and undermine the country’s support in the West.

This saga, though, introduced a new gambit: a protracted and elaborately constructed narrative built online around a fictitious character and embellished with seemingly realistic detail and a plot twist worthy of Netflix.

“They never brought back a character before,” said Darren Linvill, a professor and director of the Media Forensics Hub at Clemson University, who has extensively studied Russian disinformation.

The campaign shows how deftly Russia’s information warriors have shifted to new tactics and targets as the war in Ukraine has dragged on, just as Russian forces on the ground in Ukraine have adjusted tactics after devastating battlefield losses.

Groups with ties to the Kremlin continue to float new narratives when old ones fail to stick or grow stale, using fake or altered videos or recordings and finding or creating new outlets to spread disinformation, including ones purporting to be American news sites .

A video appeared on TikTok last month claiming to show a Ukrainian doctor working for Pfizer accusing the company of conducting unlawful tests on children. On the social network X, a man claiming to be an associate producer for Paramount Pictures spun a tale about a Hollywood biopic on Mr. Zelensky’s life.

The tale attributed to Mohamed al-Alawi is not even the only baseless allegation that Mr. Zelensky had secretly purchased properties abroad using Western financial assistance. Other versions — each seemingly tailored for a specific geographic audience — have detailed a mansion in Vero Beach, Fla., and a retreat in Germany once used by Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda.

The Russians have “demonstrated adaptability through the war on Ukraine,” Microsoft wrote in a recent report that disclosed Russia’s fraudulent use of recorded messages by famous actors and celebrities on the Cameo app to try to smear Mr. Zelensky as a drug addict.

Even when debunked, fabrications like these have proved exceedingly difficult to extinguish entirely.

YouTube took down the initial video of the character Mohamed al-Alawi, linking it to two other accounts that had previously violated the company’s policies. The accusation still circulates, however, especially on platforms, like X and Telegram, that experts say do little to block accounts generating inauthentic or automated activity. Some of the posts about the video appear to have used text or audio created with artificial intelligence tools; many are amplified by networks of bots intended to create the impression that the content is popular.

What links the narratives to Russia is not only the content disparaging Ukraine but also the networks that circulate them. They include news outlets and social media accounts that private and government researchers have linked to previous Kremlin campaigns.

“They’re trolling for a susceptible (and seemingly abundant) slice of citizens who amplify their garbage enough to muddy the waters of our discourse, and from there our policies,” said Rita Katz, the director of the SITE Intelligence Group, an American company that tracks extremist activity online and investigated the false claims about the villa.

The Making of a Fake Journalist

The video first appeared on Aug. 20 on a newly created YouTube account that had no previous activity and almost no followers, according to the Institute of Strategic Dialogue, a global nonprofit research organization in London, which traced the video’s spread.

The man appeared in a poorly lit room reading from his computer screen, which was reflected in his thick glasses. He appeared to be a real person, but it has not been possible to verify his actual identity. No one by the name of Mohamed al-Alawi appears to have produced any previous articles or videos, as would be expected of a journalist. According to Active Fence, an internet security company, the character has no educational or work history, and no network of friends or social connections online.

The video, though, showed what purported to be photographs of a purchase contract and of the villa itself, creating a veneer of authenticity for credulous viewers. The property is, in fact, part of a resort owned by Orascom Development, whose website highlights El Gouna’s “year-round sunshine, shimmering lagoons, sandy beaches and azure waters.”

An article about the video’s claim appeared two days later as a paid advertisement, or branded content, on Punch, a news outlet in Nigeria, as well as three other Nigerian websites that aggregate news and entertainment content.

The article had the byline of Arthur Nkono, who according to internet searches does not appear to have written any other articles. The article quoted a political scientist, Abdrulrahman Alabassy, who likewise appears not to exist except in accounts linking the villa to the corrupt use of Western financial aid to Ukraine. (Punch, which later removed the post, did not respond to requests for comment.)

A day later, the claim made its first appearance on X in a post by Sonja van den Ende, an activist in the Netherlands, whose articles have previously appeared on propaganda outlets linked to the Russian government, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. (She also served as an election observer in an occupied territory of Ukraine during Russian parliamentary elections in September.)

Within days, reports about the villa appeared on X in French and Romanian, and in English on three different Reddit forums.

According to Roberta Duffield, director of intelligence for Blackbird.AI, an internet security company, nearly 29 percent of the accounts amplifying the reports appeared to be inauthentic bots, an unusually high number that would normally indicate a coordinated campaign.

Eight days after the video appeared, Russia state television networks like Channel One, Rossiya 24 and RT (in Arabic and German) reported it as a major revelation uncovered by a renowned Egyptian investigative journalist.

The story seemed to stall there. Naguib Sawiris, the scion of the Egyptian family that owned the development, curtly denied the sale in a reply on X.

And no more was heard from or about the character called Mohamed al-Alawi — until late December.

That was when two new videos emerged on a YouTube channel called “Egypt News,” claiming that he was dead.

The channel had been created the day before. One video showed a man identified as Alawi’s brother, Ahmed, answering questions from another man.

The police, he said, told him that they suspected his brother had been beaten to death by “Ukrainian special forces who acted on behalf of President Zelensky or another high-ranking official.”

He spoke with his hand cupped over his face to obscure his identity. The other video showed what was said to be the site of an attack, though the images were indistinct. “I can’t tell you anything else,” he said in the video, which YouTube later removed. “I’m afraid for my family.”

The video also tried to explain away some of the obvious holes in the initial story, including why there was no evidence online of Alawi’s previous work. “It was his first big assignment,” the man said.

The new episode spread as the first video had. A day later, an article about the death appeared on an obscure website created last year called El Mostaqbal, a name similar to but unrelated to the actual news organization in Lebanon.

“A reporter who announced that Zelensky’s mother-in-law brought a luxury village has died under mysterious circumstances,” the headline read. Other reports that followed dropped any uncertainty and began referring to his “murder.”

In fact, Egypt’s Ministry of the Interior said there were no reports or evidence that anyone resembling the man in the video had been “subjected to harm.” The statement went on to note that the property itself had not been sold.

Still, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, posts about the supposed killing were viewed a million times on X on Dec. 25.

It also appeared on the website of the Middle East Monitor, or MEMO, operated by a well-known nonprofit organization in London and financed by the government of Qatar. A journalist who once reported from Moscow for The Telegraph of London, Ben Aris, cited it at length on the platform, though, when challenged, he said he had just made note of the rumor. “I don’t have time to check all this stuff myself,” he wrote.

It appeared in English on a site, Clear Story News, that Mr. Linvill of Clemson’s Digital Media Hub had previously linked to Russia’s disinformation efforts. (The site lists no contact information)

Mr. Linvill described the process as a form of “narrative laundering” — moving false claims from unknown or not credible sources to ones that, to the unwitting at least, seem more legitimate.

More Elaborate Narratives

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue studied three other complex narratives about Ukraine, as well.

One featured a French journalist who claimed that the son of George Soros — a regular target of Russian and far-right political attacks — had secretly acquired land for a toxic waste dump in Ukraine. An unnamed doctor in Africa said in another that an American medical charity, the Global Surgical and Medical Support Group, was harvesting the organs of wounded Ukrainian soldiers for transplants for NATO officers.

Then there was the case of a man calling himself Shahzad Nasir, whose profile on X identifies him as a journalist with Emirates 24/7, an English-language news outlet in Dubai, though he has no apparent bylines on the site.

In November, he claimed that cronies of Mr. Zelensky bought two yachts — Lucky Me and My Legacy — for $75 million. His evidence, like Mohamed al-Alawi’s, includes photographs of the vessels and purported purchase agreements.

In fact, as the BBC documented in December, the yachts had not been purchased and remained for sale. Despite numerous efforts by fact checkers to dispel it as rumor, the claim circulated extensively.

Last month, the character Nasir reappeared in another video. This time he had a new version of the tale, claiming that the purchases had been scuttled after he exposed the secret deal.

The ramifications of these campaigns is difficult to measure precisely. There are signs, though, that they resonate even when proved false.

Senator J.D. Vance, a Republican of Ohio and an outspoken critic of Ukraine aid, seemed to embrace the claim in December during an interview on “War Room,” the podcast hosted by Stephen K. Bannon, the onetime adviser to former President Donald J. Trump.

“There are people who would cut Social Security — throw our grandparents into poverty — why?” Mr. Vance said. “So that one of Zelensky’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?”

That prompted a public rebuke this month from a Republican colleague, Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who ridiculed those who repeat unproven allegations.

“They’ve heard somebody say that if we pass this bill, that we’re all going to go ride to Kyiv with buckets full of money and let oligarchs buy yachts!” he said of critics of the assistance to Ukraine, in what he later called a reference to Mr. Vance’s comments. “I wonder how the spouses of the estimated 25,000 soldiers in Ukraine who have died feel about that? I mean, really, guys?”

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Ukraine fired a volley of exploding drones  at Moscow and other targets on the final day of Russia’s presidential vote, the local authorities said, continuing a flurry of attacks timed for the rubber-stamp election .

The United States and six other major world powers warned Iran not to provide ballistic missiles to Russia  to aid Moscow’s war against Ukraine and threatened to retaliate if it did by cutting off Iranian air travel to Europe, among other measures.

A U.N. commission said it had uncovered new evidence of widespread torture of Ukrainian prisoners  held by Russian security forces, detailing a range of what it described as Russian war crimes, including summary executions and sexual violence.

Targeting Russia’s Oil Industry: With its army short of ammunition and troops to break the deadlock on the battlefield, Kyiv has increasingly taken the fight beyond the Ukrainian border, attacking oil infrastructure deep in Russian territory .

Electronic Warfare: Drones have become a critical weapon for both Russia and Ukraine. But Moscow’s capability to overpower Ukrainian signals  by broadcasting on the same frequencies at higher power is putting Kyiv at a disadvantage.

Helping the War Effort: Since the early days of the war, thousands of Ukrainian volunteers have led crowdfunding efforts that have been crucial in supplying the military with equipment. But as the conflict drags on, it is becoming harder to raise money .
