This Luxury Hotel Has Its Own Yacht — Here's What It's Like Sailing On It

The visionary couple behind the beloved Tuscan boutique hotel Borgo San Pietro has introduced "Satori," a 137-foot sailing yacht.

Shattering the glass ceiling with the highly talked about, award-winning 13th-century Tuscany boutique hotel Borgo Santo Pietro, the eponymous company now extends unrivaled charm and timeless design to Satori , the ultimate yacht experience.

A tender whisks me from the port in Athens, and we'll soon be approaching the yacht. From a short distance, I see the majestic Satori — or at least I hope I do. We start to slow for disembarkment, and the nautical blue starboard, vintage schooner shape, and vertical spars, standing majestic with the gods give her away. I do an internal backflip. It’s here, aboard this five-star luxury charter,  where I’ll spend the next few nights.

I’m greeted with flowing wine and hors d'oeuvres, and I don't know it yet, but for the next few days, every bite (and sip) I take will make my taste buds dance with the Mediterranean's brightest and most organically sourced flavors.

As my luggage is taken care of, I'm ushered towards the plush coffee lounge seating area where I meet Claus Thottrup, half of the duo behind the Borgo Santo Pietro Group of lifestyle companies. "C’est Magnifique" by Kay Starr hums in the background, and the rosé feels pleasing on the palate. Claus beams as he tells me passionately about Satori ’s air-conditioned wine cellar.

(Side note: You're invited to indulge in the wine services aboard the yacht, and with an admirable boutique collection of wines selected to complement the impressive meals on board, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a reason not to indulge. In fact, the cellar stocks biodynamic and sustainably produced wines sourced directly from Borgo Santo Pietro’s estate in Tuscany.)

Claus continues to tell me with pride all about the 12 years of dedication and commitment to creating excellent taste profiles. Before I know it, I’ve finished my rosé, and I'm being handed a glass of pinot noir, another Borgo classic that goes down all too well. 

Within an hour of my arrival, I slip into something more comfortable for sailing and began exploring.

At almost 137 feet in length, there’s ample opportunity for you to feel at home, and meandering through the space is easy. The teak flooring is smooth underfoot, and the flat floors make passing through each facet safe. With 376 square feet of indoor living space, encompassing a library, indoor dining area, and writing desk, you can take full advantage of the quiet moments. The best bit about this 'indoor' area is that you don’t feel like you're missing out on the sailing experience — the windows have been designed at sea level to bring expansive 360-degree views to you. In addition, the coffee deck at the stern lets you relax and be social with the wind in your hair. For complete privacy, the bow area offers an additional outdoor lounge. By night, it transforms into the most romantic cinema you’ve ever seen. 

With five luxury guest rooms including a main suite, Satori can accommodate up to 10 guests. On the other hand, with fewer guests, you can convert a cabin into a private spa facility with a steam room and treatments.

We dropped anchor in the most idyllic spots: Dokos, Hydra, Spetses, and Poros. Unlike other charters, this slimline sailing yacht can schmooze close to the turquoise rock pools and crystal-clear shallow depths. Our first stop was Agine, a picture-perfect lagoon for swimming, jet skis, and getting out the toys . Adrenaline lovers will have endless fun with the range of Seabobs, Kayaks, and Ringos.

An afternoon of frivolity can work up a serious appetite, and I soon learned that aboard Satori , feeling hungry is a good idea. No matter what time of the day, a meal is never just a plate of food; it's a labor of love, thought, and execution — and there's plenty to go around. Guests can expect to eat at the mid-deck dining table with open kitchen views and unobstructed destination scenes.  

Chefs are trained at Borgo Santo Pietro Saporium , the flagship Tuscany restaurant where authentic flavors and inventive cooking practices are the hallmarks of tantalizing cuisine. Needless to say, we were spoiled with inspired, flavourful dishes. My favorites were the lahmacun (a Middle Eastern flatbread), lobster risotto, and fresh tuna. For specifics, guests are encouraged to communicate preferences with the chef. 

Co-owners and designers Claus and Jeanette Thottrup made it their mission to capture a truly remarkable dining experience . As part of the Borgo Santo Pietro luxury lifestyle group, the culinary mission is one of great passion for the pair. With two Michelin-starred restaurants, a five-star boutique hotel, and unique guest experiences centered around food and wine, there’s no surprise that gourmet flavors are at the epicenter of a Satori voyage. 

Overamplifying the grace of Satori’s understated elegance and uncompromised comfort would ordinarily feel too much. But I catch a glimpse of myself in the glossy mahogany exterior, and amidst the deep diagonal layers of rich brown tones, I can see that Satori has gotten under my skin. Living up to her namesake meaning "instant enlightenment," I feel relaxed and at peace. Maybe it's the idea of traveling back in time?

This hand-carved wooden schooner gives all the vintage feels, as the inside decor illuminates the refined characteristics and prosperity of the 1920s and 1930s. The emphasis on clean lines, smooth round corners, and nature-inspired neutrals reflect a contemporary interpretation of Streamline Moderne . With orthopedic mattresses, sepia-tinted marble en-suite bathrooms, and technology-forward devices in every room, the old and new design elements merge unprecedentedly for a world-class sailing experience. I’m beginning to think that Satori’s unique narrative is what sailing dreams are made of.

The Genoa sail is out as we glide towards the island of Hydra. Island hopping and exploring untouched remnants of history are foremost on the itinerary. Of course, you can shape it to your liking, but for now, I felt like an Iconic star of the 1930s, taking in my first quintessential Greek experience.

A picturesque landscape that has seduced many with its stone mansions, brightly colored neighborhoods, and fairy-lit harbor is what you can expect from this island.  For us, getting lost in narrow alleys and visiting art museums is first on the agenda. Musing over the pleasant temperature came second. “This is shoulder season? It's perfect!” was the working title. Zero crowds and T-shirt weather make October in Greece a hot commodity — some might say it's the new July.  

Satori offers multiple sailing destinations, and guests can pick from a Mediterranean menu of beautiful places. Itineraries for Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, France (Corsica) can be found here . Satori sails between June through October. Booking in advance is recommended to secure dates for that eagerly awaited romantic getaway or family adventure.

At 41.5 metres, the yacht was built and designed in Bodrum, Turkey by owners Claus and Jeanette Thottrup who have a background in property development and fashion design. Entertainment isn’t just limited to the cabins, with water toys and sports on-board including jet skis, canoes, ringoes, seabobs, wakeboards, an optimist sailor, McClaren GoCycles, snorkels and a jet tender all at the guests disposal. With a crew area carefully designed to provide air-conditioned cabins for up to nine staff, on-board hospitality is comprehensive, ensuring that if a number of the crew are hosting an excursion or assisting with water toys, there will always be full service capacity on deck. Inspired by the 1920's and 1930's, Satori offers timeless elegance to the 10 guests that are lucky enough to embark on her for a crewed yacht charter. Satori has 5 large, luxury cabins and 1 that can be converted into a spa room on request. Each room is spacious and luxurious, resulting in guests feeling they are in a 5 star hotel opposed to a yacht! The saloon and dinning area are large yet have a warm and welcoming feel. They provide the perfect area to relax in out of the sun.

Outside, Satori's front deck has an open air cinema, with a fold-away cinema screen and a large sun-bed for guests to enjoy with family and friends. The top deck, provides more sunbathing opportunities but this time with stunning views out of the yacht.

Main features

WEEKLY CHARTER RATE 2024: High Season: €65,000 + VAT + APA Low Season: €58,000 + VAT + APA

Summer 2024 Operating Areas: Greece - Aegean/Cyclades Sea, Greece - Ionian Sea, Turkey.

APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): APA is an estimate (usually 30% of the charter rate) paid with the balance for covering running costs during the charter (food, drinks, fuel, mooring fees, and anything else that guests might need while on charter). Final accounts will be produced by the Captain at the end of the charter and any unused funds will be refunded in full to the Charterer directly. If the funds are not sufficient, the Captain will advise the Charterer accordingly and bills will be settled upon disembarkation.

Crew Gratuity: Although discretionary, a crew gratuity of 20% of the charter fee is customary.

CYBA/MYBA terms will apply.

Payment conditions: 50% of the charter rate within 7 days of signing the charter agreement, remaining 50% plus VAT plus APA, at least 5 weeks before the beginning of the charter.

Captain Ali Aker Captain Ali has virtually lived all his life in connection with the sea. As a child he helped fishermen and during his teens he would free dive without oxygen bottles reaching up to 35 m in depth to spear fish while working in restaurants at nights. When he turned 15, he worked on charter yachts in Bodrum as a deckhand for the first six years and from the age of 21 he worked as a chef. At 26 he passed the captain’s exam and began working as a captain on 22 to 24m charter yachts. Eight years ago, Captain Ali began working on the Satori project. He was involved during the build of the yacht and has been her Captain since she was put in the water five years ago. Since then, Ali has done 14 weeks’ worth of charters and has sailed through Italy, the south of France, Corsica, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Majorca giving him an in-depth knowledge of the harbors, blue bays for anchorage, small towns and much more. Ali’s mother tongue is Turkish, but he is also fluent in English. Ali is especially known for his desire to please clients and provide his guests with the best possible experiences based on his in-depth knowledge of Satori as well as her possibilities.

Head Chef: Serdar Elci Serdar, our resident Chef, joined Satori four years ago and has become a very valued team member thanks also to his great experience in some of the best restaurants in Turkey such as GQ (Dream) Istanbul, Cipriani Istanbul, Da Silvano Palma Life Hotel Bodrum, Macakizi Bodrum. He also has extensive experience in international cuisine from his time spent in several restaurants in the US, at The Manor at Bickely in London and at the Borgo Santo Pietro in Italy.

Chief Stewardess: Bianca Salov Bianca is on her second season with Satori. Her background spans from working in restaurants to private villas. During the past six years she has been working at sea on private charters, first as chef, then as solo stewardess and finally as Head Stewardess. With her experience and maturity, she is a great asset to the team and ensures guests are comfortable and well catered for. Bianca is a hard worker and very focused on every client’s happiness on board. Bianca has a warm and friendly smile, is soft spoken and speaks good English.

First Mate : Ugur Bacaci Ugur joined the Satori team during the winter maintenance period of 2020. This is his first summer season with Satori. Ugur has a background education in ship engineering from the Verna Technical University and has matured his onboard experience in the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Black seas on board gullets, starting as a deck hand and working his way up to First Mate on 42 and 50m yachts.

Sailing yacht SATORI is a 19,30m (63' 3") sailing yacht built in 2005 by 19.30m (63' 3"). The yacht can accommodate 8 guests and is usually based in the Caribbean.

SATORI has a very light and airy saloon with plenty of natural light and light furnishings and wood. There is a table to starboard with seating for up to 8 around the l shaped comfortable sofa and chairs. The Navigation station is to port there is a retracting 20” TV/DVD player and Stereo with IPod connection that link to cockpit speakers. The system is linked to Bose Acoustimass saloon speakers. The yacht boasts plenty of deck space and there is plenty of space on the 2 cockpit couches opposite each there. There is an expandable table for el fresco dining and a great view of the Captain at the wheel.

He loves introducing his guests to his favorite anchorages and spots off the beaten track as well as taking in the must see attractions. The sailing yacht SATORI can accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 cabins. Her Owner’s cabin is full width of the beam with king size bed and dressing table. There are two large hanging cupboards plus drawers under bed. There is a separate stereo with IPod connection. The cabins En-suite head has a Corian basin and top, Tecma quiet flush toilet and separate shower stall. There is a twin cabin Aft to starboard and a bunk room Port forward with one permanent berth and one pipecot. This cabin is connected to the owner’s cabin and is suitable for children. There is also a double guest cabin, Aft to port with a double bed and access to en-suite heads.

Self-exiled Chinese billionaire found guilty of defrauding followers in $US1 billion scheme

Guo Wengui, a business tycoon and outspoken opponent of China's Communist Party, was found guilty by a New York federal court of defrauding customers in a $US1 billion scheme.

Prosecutors say Guo spent the money on luxury goods including a New Jersey mansion, a red Lamborghini and a yacht.

What's next? 

Guo could face decades of prison after being found guilty of charges including racketeering conspiracy and wire fraud.

Guo Wengui, a self-exiled Chinese business tycoon and outspoken opponent of Beijing's communist government, has been found guilty of defrauding customers in a more than $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) scheme, prosecutors say. 

In a New York federal court, Guo was convicted on nine of the 12 criminal counts he faced, including racketeering conspiracy and wire fraud, in a trial that lasted seven weeks.

He could face decades in prison. 

US District Judge Analisa Torres set his sentencing for November 19.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan said Guo raised more than $US1 billion by guaranteeing followers on social media that they would not lose money if they joined him in a series of investment and cryptocurrency schemes from 2018 to 2023, some of which he said would go toward challenging China's government.

Prosecutors say the one-time real estate mogul spent the money on luxury goods including a New Jersey mansion, a red Lamborghini and a yacht.

"Thousands of Guo's online followers were victimised so that Guo could live a life of excess," Damian Williams, the US Attorney in Manhattan, said in a statement after the verdict.

Earlier in the trial, jurors were allowed to hold keys to the Lamborghini that authorities found in a garage on Guo's Connecticut estate.

In a closing argument at the trial, Assistant US Attorney Ryan Finkel said Guo "spouted devious lies to trick his followers into giving him money".

He said Guo made hundreds of broadcasts and videos in which he promised followers that they would not lose money if they invested with him.

"I'm rich. I'll take care of you," the prosecutor said Guo told them.

He added that Guo also spent millions from investors on a lavish lifestyle for himself and his family that included a $1.6 million tortoise-shell jewellery box and some candlesticks, a $1 million chandelier, $53,000 mattresses, a $60,000 coffee table and a $370,000 antique rug, items kept at a family home in New Jersey.

CCP dissident 

Guo's defence lawyers portrayed him as an ardent dissident who flaunted his wealth as part of his political critique of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and said that jurors should not rush to judgement as prosecutors had.

"Mr Guo didn't care about the money," defence lawyer Sidhardha Kamaraju said in his closing argument last week.

"He cared about the movement."

The lawyer did not deny that his client lived lavishly, but he said prosecutors wanted jurors to take "leaps in logic" to find Guo guilty.

"It's not a crime to be wealthy," Mr Kamaraju said.

"It is not a crime to live in luxury or to spend money on nice things. It's not a crime to have a yacht or a jet or to wear nice suits. It may not be our lifestyle. It may be odd. It may even be off-putting to some, but it's not a crime."

Mr Kamaraju argued that the New Jersey mansion and Lamborghini were not Guo's personal property, but rather amenities available for the use of a luxury membership club for his followers.

Guo, who is also known by the name Miles Kwok, left China in 2014 during an anti-corruption crackdown that ensnared people close to him, including a top intelligence official.

Chinese authorities accused him of rape, kidnapping, bribery and other crimes, but Guo said those allegations were false and designed to punish him for publicly revealing corruption as he criticised leading figures in the Communist Party.

He applied for political asylum in the US, moved to a luxury apartment overlooking Central Park and joined former president Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago golf club in Florida.

While living in New York, Guo developed a close relationship with Trump's one-time political strategist, Steve Bannon.

In 2020, the two announced a joint initiative to overthrow the Chinese government.

Bannon was arrested in August 2020 on Guo's yacht, the Lady May, in an unrelated fraud case and was later pardoned by Trump.

Chinese magnate with a red Lamborghini and superyacht convicted for bilking $1 billion from investors

Exiled Chinese tycoon Guo Wengui, whose crusade against the Communist Party attracted allies including Donald Trump associate Steve Bannon, was convicted for duping investors out of $1 billion to fund his luxury lifestyle.

After a trial in Manhattan that lasted almost two months, Guo was found guilty on Tuesday of fraud and racketeering conspiracy. Convicted on nine of the 12 counts against him, he faces as many as 20 years in prison on the most serious charges when he is sentenced on Nov. 19. 

Guo “brazenly operated several interrelated fraud schemes, all designed to fleece his loyal followers out of their hard-earned money so that Guo could spend his days in his 50,000-square-foot mansion, driving his $1 million Lamborghini, or lounging on his $37 million yacht,” Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement after the verdict.

A lawyer for Guo declined to comment, but Guo is almost certain to appeal the verdict.

Guo smiled at his lawyers as the jury walked out, hugged attorney Sabrina Shroff and shook the hands of other members of the defense team. The outspoken businessman, also known as Ho Wan Kwok or Miles Guo, was tried before jurors whose names were kept secret — an unusual move designed to shield them in a case that has drawn intense interest. 

Appealing to a huge online following, Guo raised money from investors for seemingly legitimate businesses but diverted the funds to spend on himself and his family. The trial involved weeks of testimony from investors drawn to Guo through his public critique of the Chinese Communist Party, as well as from luxury car dealers who sold him rare vehicles and a managing director at Kyle Bass’ hedge fund Hayman Capital Management, which ran a hedge fund that the government said Guo invested $100 million of the stolen funds in. 

Neither Bass, Hayman nor Bannon was accused of wrongdoing in the case.

Videos From His Superyacht

Guo amassed his social media following through videos recorded from his penthouse at the Sherry-Netherland hotel overlooking New York’s Central Park or from the deck of his 152-foot superyacht. Guo claimed his fortune came from his wealthy real estate developer family in China. But a portion of his wealth, federal prosecutors said, also came from stealing $1 billion through bogus investment opportunities he hawked online. 

The jury began its deliberations Thursday but was forced to start over with an alternate juror after a member of the panel admitted to Googling the name of a co-defendant, who is still at large. 

The defense urged the jurors not to let Guo’s expensive tastes cloud their judgment, claiming he flaunted his wealth as a form of protest against the Communist Party. 

The prosecution had its own framing. “Is Miles Guo a real political activist?” Assistant US Attorney Juliana Murray said Thursday during closing arguments. “I don’t know and I don’t care, because that’s not what this trial is about.”

Mysterious Background

The case explored Guo’s mysterious background, including fleeing persecution in China, his ties to Bannon and how he came to pour millions into Hayman Capital’s high-risk wager against the Hong Kong dollar. 

Bannon was on Guo’s yacht off the coast of Connecticut in 2020 when the political adviser was arrested on charges he conspired to siphon hundreds of thousands of dollars from a campaign to finance a wall on the US southern border. Trump pardoned Bannon just before leaving office.

In 2020, Guo transfered $100 million raised through an illicit stock offering in his GTV Media Group to the Hayman Hong Kong Opportunities Fund, which held a position that the country’s currency peg to the US dollar would collapse, according to prosecutors. Bannon introduced Guo and Bass, a longtime China skeptic. Bannon himself was paid $1 million as a consultant to GTV’s parent company Saraca Media Group, evidence presented at the trial showed. 

After Hayman received the investment, Bannon emailed Bass. 

‘Congrats on Miles Deal’

“Congrats on miles deal,” Bannon wrote, according to an email presented as evidence. “He thinks u r biggest superstar in finance.” 

A month later, the US Securities and Exchange Commission contacted Hayman to inquire about the source of the funds. When Bass asked Guo’s financial adviser for an explanation, he got no reply, evidence showed. By that point, close to $30 million had been lost in the unsuccessful currency wager. 

The remaining $70 million was eventually handed over to authorities.

Guo was acquitted on Tuesday of fraud related to the stock offering in GTV and of unlawful monetary transaction in connection with the $100 million transfer to the Hayman hedge fund.

$539 Million SEC Settlement

In 2021, three Guo-linked companies, including GTV, agreed to pay  $539 million  to settle the SEC’s investigation into unregistered stock offerings. 

According to prosecutors, other Guo scams involved an exclusive private members-only club with a minimum $10,000 buy-in, a crypto platform called the Himalaya Exchange and a farm loan program. 

The government alleged Guo also peeled off investor funds to spend on luxuries including a red Lamborghini, a $4 million Ferrari for his son and a $26 million New Jersey mansion.

The case is US v. Guo, 23-cr-00118, US District Court, Southern District of New York (Manhattan).
