Built by the Dutch Masters at Holland Jachtbouw in 2012, RAINBOW is quite simply, the best of her breed. One of the most recently launched J-Class reproductions, Dykstra Naval Architects developed RAINBOW from the original plans of this 1937 America’s Cup winner and smoothed her lines to modern hydrodynamic standards, optimized to the new J-Class Rule. Her engineering and construction created a modern classic, built with “cutting edge” technology, engineering and materials, from her “hybrid” diesel/electric drive and electrical system, to her high modulus spar, carbon rigging and electro-hydraulic sail and boat handling systems.
RAINBOW is a true “dual purpose” yacht, serving equally successfully as a “silver service” charter yacht for up to eight guests, or as a grand prix racing yacht of the highest caliber. In cruising mode, the yacht has all attributes for easy operation; hydraulic sail handling, winches, thrusters, and a simple sail-plan. Her entertaining cockpit dresses for comfortable entertaining, lounging and dining, and her interior offers all amenities for gracious living aboard. For racing, pulpits & lifelines are removed as all deck areas are stripped and streamlined for the efficiencies required at the absolute pinnacle of yacht racing. RAINBOW’s record speaks for itself on both counts.

6 of the best photos from the 2017 J Class World Championships
Lionheart completes the treble.
The inaugural J Class World Championships drew to a close in Newport over the weekend (August 26), with Lionheart (pictured above, left) coming out on top. The owner-skipped yacht was a worthy winner, finishing in the top three for all seven races of the regatta.
Tactician Bouwe Bekking led the crew to the title with consecutive second-place finishes in the final two races. “It is a special title, one for the owner who gives us so much confidence in ourselves and who gives us carte blanche in how we set the boat up and how we sail,” he said.
Lionheart ’s victory, combined with previous triumphs at the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta and America’s Cup J Class Regatta , means that the 43.4 metre Claasen yacht also took home the Terry Kohler Trophy for the overall season champion.

Photo: Onne van der Wal
The sight of J Class yachts racing in Newport was a truly historic one, as this is the first time these classic yachts have graced the Rhode Island waters together since 1937 America's Cup . The J Class Association assembled a truly impressive fleet for the regatta, with the newest J Class yacht Svea joined by restored original Velsheda and modern replicas Ranger , Lionheart , Topaz and Hanuman . Another new-era J Class yacht, Rainbow , which is currently offered for sale , was also in attendance.
On board Svea
Delivered by Dutch yard Vitters earlier this year, Svea turned heads in Newport with her bright red spinnaker. This dramatic on-board photo was taken on Day Five by Onne van der Wal and gives an idea of the co-ordinated effort required to sail such a monumental yacht to the best of her abilities.
Ranger makes a splash
The first of the modern-era J Class yachts , 41.55 metre Ranger was launched by Danish Yachts in 2003. Her performance in Newport was something of a mixed bag, recovering from a slow start to record four successive podium finishes, including first place in Race Five. Indeed, four of the six yachts competing managed at least one win in Newport — a fact that highlights how evenly matched they are.
Velsheda’s close shave
The week got off to a dramatic start when Ranger shut out Velsheda during Race One of the J Class World Championships, leaving the 38.5 metre yacht with nowhere to go. Despite clipping a signal boat, she was able to continue, but could not catch up with her rivals and finished in sixth place. Velsheda ’s fortunes improved with two second place finishes in Races Two and Three, however two further sixth place finishes meant she finished the week in sixth overall.
Ranger blows a sail
Immense forces are channelled through the sails of J Class yachts during a regatta and as a result, accidents can happen. This spectacular shot of Ranger blowing a sail was captured on Day Two of the J Class World Championships . Despite this dramatic mishap, she finished the day with a respectable return of a third place finish and a fourth place finish.

J Class picture highlights: spectacular images of 7 J Class sailing together at the 35th America’s Cup
- Toby Hodges
- June 21, 2017
The largest collection of J Class yachts yet – seven of the now nine strong J Class fleet – raced during the America’s Cup in Bermuda in June.
It is a sight many sailors have looked forward to as much or even more so than the America’s Cup itself – Seven J Class , the largest fleet to ever assemble in the 87 history of the class, raced in their own regatta either side of the first weekend of the America’s Cup finals.
The J Class also performed a stunning exhibition race on the America’s Cup course on the Great Sound on Saturday, shortly before the first America’s Cup match, for the thousands of fans in the America’s Cup village. (The shallow, reef-strewn depths of the Great Sound make it very tricky to set a proper course for the J Class, hence the actual races were held off the north coast of the island).
A combination of having some of the world’s best photographers here and the J Class racing on translucent turquoise blue seas means the resultant photographs (below) make for a visual treat.
Lionheart scored a first and second on the final day to win the J Class regatta, which concluded in a light breeze off the north coast of the island. It was reduced to a two day, five race event after Friday’s racing was canceled due to light wind.
The fleet was also without its newest member Svea for the final three races, after she suffered rig damage durig the second race (pictured below). But the crews at the prize giving were all delighted with how close the racing was in the light, flat water conditions – a fleet divided and decided literally by seconds.

The newest J Class, a Hoek rework of a Tore Holm design, looked superb in her first regatta and was going well until she suffered rig failure (below) in her second race. Studio Borlenghi
There was a loud bang as Svea approached the top mark – the headstay swivel broke and the stay and genoa collapsed. The crew reacted quickly to release the mainsheet and runners and crank on halyards to the foredeck to keep the mast standing. It is hoped Svea will be fixed in time for the J Class Worlds in Newport in August. Studio Borlenghi

Following a poor start and a tense finish to the last race, Lionheart wins the America’s Cup J Class Regatta. It marked triple success for the JH1 team in Bermuda, after also winning their class and the overall prize in the Superyacht Regatta. Some of her Falmouth based crew hoist the Cornish flag in celebration – Ingrid Abery

The J Class
J Class yachts were originally built to the specifications of the Universal Rule. The J Class really represents the golden age of racing for the America’s Cup in the 1930s when this Universal Rule was used as the determining measurement system.
About the Class
Designers had to produce a J Class yacht which had a rating of between 65 and 76 feet. That was not the length of the boats but a product of the limiting factors of the rule’s equation. Any of the determining factors such as length, displacement or sail area could be changed but such changes required proportionate change in other factors to compensate. This allowed them to be raced on a level basis. Stability was not taken into account. Limits were set on measurements for waterline length, draft, freeboard and so on.
The three original surviving Js - Velsheda, Shamrock and Endeavour - have been refitted for worldwide cruising and racing. Their displacements have increased and the yachts no longer rate as a J under the Universal Rule definition, with the exception of Shamrock V, which was the smallest of the Js.
In total nine J Class yachts are active now with six replicas having been built since 2003; Ranger, Rainbow, Hanuman, Lionheart, Topaz and Svea.
The J Class Association
The J Class Association (JCA) was founded to protect the interests of the Class, present and future. Among its responsibilities it monitors and agrees the veracity of designs to which new replica boats can be built to, the build materials and specifications, which since Hanuman and Lionheart have included aluminium alloy.
It’s objective is to keep the J Class fleet and races alive and to encourage new build yachts (replica builds from original plans) to join the Class. The intent is to race the surviving Js, new existing Js, and potential new replica Js together in such a manner that has a fair handicap, to ensure that.
The Rules are kept as short and simple as possible, in order to meet the objectives. The Rules are written in the proper gentleman’s spirit, not to be bypassed to gain advantage, which is not in the spirit of the Class.
The original late 20th Century refits of the three surviving Js were used to help respect the tradition and guide the structure of these rules.

Where to Buy a Home in Moscow in 2024
The growth in suburban house prices in 2021 can be as high as 15%. This prognosis was voiced by the participants of Moscow’s real estate market. Housing near Moscow has already gone up in value by 7%, and before the end of the year, this number is quite likely to rise by another 2–3%. The pandemic has changed the trends on the suburban real estate market – the current demand for detached houses is noticeably higher than before the global outbreak of Covid-19, and this naturally influences the cost of residential homes, say the experts. They also note that traditionally, the fall-winter period has always been considered a time of low demand for houses for sale in Russia; however, the opposite is now the case.
Here are the Moscow real estate categories to consider when buying a house in Russia:
- By direction and location (Rublyovka, Novaya Riga, Barvikha);
- By classification ( luxury , business class, economy);
- By development format (townhouses, detached private homes).
When purchasing homes in Moscow, Russia, a good rule of thumb is to select houses within an 18.6-mile (30 km) radius from the center of Moscow. This ensures you will get a well-developed infrastructure, and that the chosen location will be replete with hospitals and schools.
We recommend considering the West, South and North directions just out of Moscow. You may notice that country houses are noticeably cheaper on the capital’s Eastern side. However, this is due to poor environmental conditions – the result of the presence of a number of industrial facilities in the entire East area.
Best Cottage Communities in Moscow
Muscovites with high incomes live in closed elite cottage communities that have their own full infrastructure. Such cottage communities are usually designed by Europe’s best architects, especially contracted for the job. These locations have everything: private English schools, restaurants, shops, pools and gyms, beauty salons and equestrian sports clubs.
The most expensive houses up for sale are located in the Barvikha Hills area (Rublevka direction). This elite location near Moscow even has its own famous brand boutiques: Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Bentley, Ferrari and Harley-Davidson. The least expensive house here costs 1.5 million US dollars and has a floor area of 656 sqft (200 m²). This gated community is just 10-20 minutes by car away from Moscow itself.
We encourage you to consider some of the following elite locations as you decide where to purchase your ideal property: Etude Family Club, La-Mansh, Western Residence, Yusupovo Life Park, Odintsovo, Novaya Riga and Pirogovo. There you will find everything one requires for a comfortable life, at the price of 300 to 500 thousand US dollars for a residential home.
As you choose your future home, make sure to take into account the category of the land on which it is built. Each category has its own taxation rate. Our lawyer can explain all the details on property taxes in Russia to you at your request. Contact us to get your consultation!
