Tornado Catamaran Building Instructions From 1979

Introduction: Tornado Catamaran Building Instructions From 1979

TimAnderson

The Tornado is the catamaran raced in the olympics. It was originally designed so that it could be home-built by individuals. Each hull is made from two pieces of plywood glued together in a vee shape position, then forced into a jig that bends them into a gracefully curved hull. The technique is called "tortured plywood". These are the detailed building instructions from Houlton Boat Company 1979 If you are Jerry Houlton I'd love to hear from you

Step 1: Tornado Catamaran Olympic Trials 1967 AYRS Report

Here's the 1967 AYRS (Amateur Yacht Research Society) report on how the Tornado, a "tortured plywood" boat, became the Olympic catamaran. It was a major leap forward in performance, outsailing the other contenders by a wide margin. After 40 years, many believe that the design is perfect for a two-man cat to be sailed in somewhat rough water. The boats built today have a rig that's larger and lighter, and the hulls are usually made from carbon and honeycomb, but the shape of the hulls hasn't changed at all. It's the standard by which 20 foot catamarans must be judged, and you can build your own from plywood.

Hull & tubes, superior hull design.

The modern Tornado hull design is the evolution of more than 40 years of testing, upgrading and modification, which has resulted in a Tornado range of boats consisting of 4 different models to suit every need, from the small lake runabout RIB to the 12m Commercial Tornado RIBs currently operating in some of the harshest environments. This wide range of use is especially due to the strength of the hull, which is in the fiber reinforcements and not directly in the resin (but the resin must be strong of course, as this is what binds it all together), and at Tornado Boats we use a combination of polyester and vinyl ester to get the strongest and lightest boats. But what gives the Tornado RIB an advantage over all other RIBs on the market, is the classic V-design of the hull. This design has demonstrated its durability and strength for over 4 decades, mainly because it maximizes the speed of the RIB while economizing fuel consumption, as well as providing supreme safety, maneuverability and versatility.

Extremely durable tubes

Choosing the correct material for the tube construction is one the most important decisions when building a RIB, which is why all Tornado tubes are made of the best PU fabric available. PU or Polyurethane material has far superior qualities of abrasion resistance and the ability to cope with extreme temperatures, and this PU material (in 2 different weights) has the unique advantage, that it also allows any general fittings, strake, cladding, handles or lifelines to be glued to the tubes. To add to the quality of the production, all our seams on these high class RIB Tubes are welded, a production method that makes the seams almost as strong as the fabric itself and far stronger than glued seams.

Best materials available

As with all Tornado production, we have chosen the best production methods and materials, not the easiest and cheapest. Every custom-built Tornado is hand crafted using the highest grade marine materials on the market, and as one of the few RIB manufacturers in the world we manufacture our own pontoons from 100% Polyurethane fabric. A material that is far superior in every way to common fabrics like Hypalon and PVC, which is also why Polyurethane is especially recommended by military experts for professional RIBs. In 1993 the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center did a study on polyurethane and the advantages of using it for Rigid Inflatable Boats. The Technical Memorandum concludes: “The data shows that the Urethane coated fabric is considerably stronger than the Hypalon® coated fabric.”

The Memorandum also states that: “(. . .) Polyurethane is more correctly defined as an elastomer, meaning, it can be repeatedly stretched and still recover to show its original properties – a significant benefit for RIB tubes that are often subjected to major stresses during wave impact.”

And it recommends: “Urethane coated fabrics should be adopted as a replacement for Hypalon® coated fabrics in tube construction on U.S. Navy RIBs.”

Another study, also by the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center, confirmed those results in 2001 and further stated that: “Tubes constructed of polyurethane coated fabric exhibit better key physical properties than tubes constructed of Hypalon coated fabric (…), better tensile strength, tearing strength, puncture resistance, coating adhesion, and abrasion resistance.”

Click here for more information on the subject.

Polyurethane facts:

– Polyurethane has a very long service life. – Very high mechanical strength against wear and tear as well as point loads. – High resistance to UV. – Exceptional air-tightness. – Rarely punctures. – Easier/less time-consuming to repair compared to other materials. – Resistant to most solvents like oil and petrol.

A variety of functions

The console has many functions to perform during the use of your Tornado RIB. It is designed to carry steering and engine controls, mount a vast array of electronics equipment, house one of our aluminum fuel tanks or simply to provide protection for the crew, while still maintaining a comfortable and user-friendly design.

Your indispensable workspace

All Tornado consoles are molded on to the deck – never bolted or screwed. This is one of the many reasons why the Tornado consoles lasts longer, still looking great. If your RIB is your daily workspace or you simply want your console to have great longevity, a molded console is what you would want, and it comes in every possible color you may desire and with the kind of crab handle, windshield or locker you need.

Click on the gallery to see our large selection of consoles ranging from single and double consoles to our custom-built models.

STAINLESS STEEL PARTS

First class quality.

We strive to deliver the highest quality possible and a pure design that pleases the eye and withstands the elements. That’s the essence of the Tornado build, and our stainless steel parts are no exceptions, as they are built with the highest grade marine stainless steel known as A4/316. In our selection are also a wide range of aluminum fittings. They are sea water proof, and we have a huge selection of standard fittings from Handles to A-Frames, Bottle Racks and Windscreens.

Custom made steel and aluminum parts

Should you need anything beyond our standard range then we can also design and build any bespoken stainless or aluminum pieces you may dream of – in polished or powder coated finish and in any color you would like; almost anything is possible.

The right storage for a tidier boat

All features in our Tornado RIBs are custom made – including the lockers. We have a large range of lockers, from low bow lockers for anchors and ropes – to high wide lockers with multiples hatches for storing lifesaving equipment and the like. We make benches with lockers underneath, lockers incorporated in the console, or lockers in the seating, and they are all handmade for a perfect fit around the tubes and in corners.

Please see our wide range of lockers and let us know if you are unable to find what you are looking for, so we can find a solution together.

Rope Stoppers Balls

Let customers speak for us

It is a good buoyancy-aid it has a nice size pocket and is really comfortable to wear. They also have fast delivery and great customer support thanks Jason.

I bought these hoping they be ok as prizes for our Topper Traveller, but was concerned they wouldn’t be robust given the price (in which case the 3 sailors in the family would get them). I was happy when they arrived. They are more robust than I thought, and super lightweight, but with a grippy palm part. They’ll be great for use in the summer on their own (lighter than neoprene) but robust enough to protect hands, but also good enough to be used as a base layer in the winter. Happy that we were able to use as prizes.,

It’s stretchy and can tie in knots.

Does the job

It’s blue, has an open bit at the top and holds stuff. Yet to try the dry feature.

Great service, quick turn around for the job. nice neat job when it arrived. Would not hesitate to recommend to further members at our club. Well done 10 out of 10

I mistakenly ordered the wrong quick release pin for my Laser vang. Sailing Chandlery very kindly agreed to replace for the one I needed. Swapped out very quickly with no fuss.

Just brilliant, exactly what I needed and good quality. Fits perfectly. Fast delivery and usual great service. Thank you, highly recommended

I use this tape to repair waterproof jackets and it is as strong and waterproof as many other alternatives and much cheaper :)

This cover fits easily over the boat with masts and boom placed on a set of spar holders. There is a neat velco opening to bring out a bowline to secure to the trolley.

A new innovation surprise is having clips on both sides of the cover. You can unclip from whichever side you are on.

Sailing Chandlery have listened to feedback from a previous purchase of the older design. Remains to be seen how it weathers, how breathable and water-proof it all is, but looking v smart from new.

Probably the most comfortable visor I’ve worn. I put it to the test in Dubai last week, it never budged, and wasn’t too tight or hot. The little clip gives added reassurance that you won’t loose it. I’m very pleased with the purchase.

There’s a reason I keep on buying these. My last pair lasted 4 years of use, sailing almost every weekend. They last and when you consider the cost and use, it probably works out to be the equivalent of buying a really cheap pair once every 6-12 months. Why buy twice? Very comfortable and supportive.

What more can be said, easy to fit and do the job

Very happy with the Kingfisher braid on braid, very easy to splice.

Great top, fits perfectly. I’m purchased a size 10 and is true to size.

The Tornado was one of our first catamaran classes we built sails for.

At that time it was still a classic pin-top sail made out of Dacron. The Tornado has been developed over the years, the mainsail got a square-top, the jib became a self-tacking jib and the Tornado was equipped with a spi.

When the carbon mast was introduced to the Tornado, we were the first sailmakers who got a prototype mast for the sail development to make first comparisons between the aluminum and the carbon rig.

Meanwhile we build almost exclusively sails for the Carbon Rig. But we also still build sails for the Alu Rig and for the "Oldimer-Fans" even a pin-top sail from current materials.

The CB5 mainsail is our radial classic, which was first developed for the carbon mast in 2004.

Currently in its 5th generation, the sail has been further developed over the years and still represents the benchmark in the Tornado.

World’s coolest yachts: Tornado catamaran

Yachting World

  • April 20, 2021

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. This month, Carolijn Brouwer nominates the Tornado catamaran

tornado catamaran parts

“The Tornado catamaran is a really cool boat. It was my introduction to high performance sailing and it had a big influence on me in many ways.

“Once you get a taste for it, there is no way back. Sailing the Tornado opened up different doors for me in my sailing career,” says Carolijn Brouwer .

The Tornado catamaran was for many years the fastest Olympic sailing class and was the first catamaran to be introduced to the Olympic Games. It was first sailed in the 1976 Olympic Games and saw its last Olympic appearance in 2008.

tornado catamaran parts

There was not multihull option for sailing at the Olympic Games in 2012, but the Tornado undoubtedly led the way for the current catamaran class, the Nacra 17, which must be sailed with a female and a male member of the crew.

“Sailing the Tornado is where I got the feel for apparent wind sailing. It’s a pretty big cat in the small boat sailing world with its 20ft length and 10ft width creating decent loads and righting moment.

“Also, the Tornado was the only Open discipline at the Olympic Games but it was extremely male dominated.”

Brouwer helmed for Belgium at the 2008 Games, sailing a Tornado catamaran with crew Sébastien Godefroid. “I hope this showed that being a woman you can compete at a high level and be very competitive against men in a mixed gender configuration – just like the great Paul Elvstrøm did sailing with his daughter.”

Tornado catamaran stats rating:

Top speed: 20 knots LOA: 20ft/6.1m Launched: 1967 Berths: 0 Price: £23,000 Adrenalin factor: 70%

Carolijn Brouwer

A three-time Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race crew, Carolijn Brouwer is also a three-time Olympian. She was born in the Netherlands and represented the country at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics in first the 470, and then the Europe. She then switched to the Tornado, representing Belgium in 2008, when she finished 12th.
