Seeing the fireworks from a yacht will ensure you get up close and personal and have the best view in the city.

When it comes to weather, Sydney is quite predictable. The warmer months are commonly from November to February which is when the Harbour is most alive and buzzing with activity.

The cooler months are March to August. Even if you are visiting in the cooler months, make sure to pack swimwear, as it is common to enjoy warm, sunny days during winter.

YACHT HISTORY

Built with Huon Pine planks and spotted gum ribs, Southwinds holds a significant role in English design pedigree as well as Australia’s yachting history.

Designed by Sir Robert Clarke and launched in 1950, she would have been one of the fastest and largest yachts in Sydney Harbour at that time. She has competed in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race and had many notable owners.

Her large windows, expansive decks and rich timbers create a spacious and elegant atmosphere for onboard guests.

For smaller yacht hire on Sydney Harbour, you can expect to pay between $650-$1,200/hr, depending on the type of vessel and the season. For larger yachts, you can expect an hourly rate of $900-$1,700/hr and super yachts hire starts at $1,800/hr. On top of this, most yacht charge a wharf pick up and drop off fee (generally $100-$150) and amenities feee (generally $100-$150 or a $15/pp fee). Luxury yachts often also charge a wait staff fee. We will outlay all costs for you upon enquiry, so there are no surprises on the day.

During high season (September – April) or on Saturdays throughout the year, the standard hire time is usually 4 hours or more. However, a select few vessels offer 3-hour hires year-round. In low season (May – August) and on weekdays throughout the year, most vessels offer 3-hour hires as standard. It’s worth noting that overnight hire can also be arranged upon request. Just let us know your requirements, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Luxury boats are generally available for hire during the afternoon or evening. Typically, afternoon hires commence at 12pm or 1pm, while evening hires begin at 5pm or 6pm. If you let us know your preference, we will inform you of the available times.

When you hire a luxury yacht in Sydney, the package typically includes the use of the vessel, along with an experienced skipper and crew to handle navigation and management. In addition, certain yachts may offer extra amenities and services, such as onboard entertainment systems and water sports equipment like kayaks or paddleboards. We’ll thoroughly review any boat hire package with you, so you can have a clear understanding of what’s included, as well as any additional costs that may apply.

Yacht hire has become a highly sought-after option for boat rentals on Sydney Harbour, particularly during peak season and especially on Saturdays, which tend to book up rapidly. To secure your desired time and date, we recommend making your reservation at least 3 months in advance. This will ensure that you have ample options to choose from and secure your booking without any hassle. Although we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment, we are more than happy to accommodate last-minute bookings whenever possible. We will do our very best to assist you in securing a yacht hire for your desired date and time, even if it’s on short notice.

Luxury yachts are an excellent choice for spending a day on Sydney Harbour, thanks to their upscale amenities. If your vessel offers easy water access (with either a swimming ladder or plaform), the captain can take you to the finest secluded spots for swimming. Please mention your interest in swimming when you make your enquiry, and our team will inform you of your options!

Most luxury boats offer a BYO drinks option, where you can bring your own drinks onboard for a small amenity fee. This typically includes glassware, cool storage, and in some cases, ice. When you make your booking, we will inform you of the BYO option and any associated fees, so you can plan accordingly and avoid any unexpected expenses. To comply with RSA guidelines, it’s mandatory to have enough food on board for all cruises. With yachts, you are generally allowed to bring your own food, and some vessels even come equipped with onboard BBQs where the crew can cook your food for you. If you make an enquiry, we will inform you whether your chosen boat has a BBQ available, so you can plan your food arrangements accordingly and avoid any surprises. While it’s often possible to bring your own food on board, we highly recommend considering the catering options offered by the boat. Our partners offer a wide variety of delicious food and beverage options, making it easy for you to organise your onboard dining experience. Not to mention, it can often be a more convenient and hassle-free option, allowing you to sit back and enjoy your day on the water.

You can view all available pick up and drop off wharf options here . While it’s subject to availability and potential surcharges, we do offer the option of selecting separate locations for both pick-up and drop-off. Our team will be happy to suggest appropriate locations for your group and recommend vessels that can pick you up from your preferred wharf location.

Yachts are equipped to cruise in any weather conditions that are deemed safe by the captain. However, in the event that the weather is deemed unsafe and the captain has to cancel the charter, we will issue you with a voucher for the full value of your booking. You can use this voucher to reschedule your booking within 12 months. Additionally, even when it’s raining, our guests still have an incredible time out on the Harbour. With plenty of space to stay dry and cozy, it can even add to the fun and create a unique and memorable experience.

If you wish to explore further, most of these boats listed can cruise offshore to the sheltered waters of Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River. often the only extra cost incurred is extra fuel costs. This varies from each vessel - We do have some vessels where the skipper stays onboard the vessel and others where the skipper gets off the vessel once moored.

Where does the vessel anchor?

This is dependent on the weather and winds on the night of your charter - the skipper will choose a nice secluded bay on the night

Can I bring my own music?

Definitely! On board all of our vessels is an AUX cord which is compatible with any music compatible device e.g. iPhone, iPod.

How do I make a boat booking?

To secure a vessel for your charter, we take a 50% deposit of the total amount or cost of the vessel hire, unless specified otherwise. The rest of the payment will be due 14 days prior to the charter along with final numbers and food and beverage requirements. Just select your start date and end date to check the availability for your selected date.

How can I make payment?

Payment can be made by EFT, Visa, MasterCard or in cash.

Yacht Mark Twain being refurbished in bid to compete in Sydney to Hobart race once more

For the better part of five decades, one yacht returned to the starting line of the Sydney to Hobart race more than any other.

The timber and fibreglass hulled Mark Twain was built in 1971 and has competed in the race a record-breaking 26 times.

But since its last effort in 2018, it has languished at port.

The yacht's new owner, Rob Payne, who refers to himself as the boat's custodian, has grand plans to refurbish the vessel, a Sparkman and Stephens 39, and return the Mark Twain to its former glory.

Although he hopes to return the boat to the starting line of the Sydney to Hobart, he also believes the yacht can be used for a greater good.

Along with Beaconsfield mine disaster survivor Brant Webb , Mr Payne has plans to establish a group called Old Saltys, which will aim to use sailing as a vessel to empower youth through sharing knowledge.

"Sailing is a metaphor for life. You've got to trim your sails and set your course and you're gonna get buffeted around," he said.

The Old Salty's motto will be 'well-weathered wisdom', and the men believe they have a lot of life experience they can share with young people anywhere Mark Twain can sail.

Mine collapse survivor finds solace on the sea

Brant Webb, who was one of two miners rescued after spending 14 days trapped almost a kilometre underground when a Tasmanian mine collapsed in 2006, says sailing helped him after the ordeal.

"After Beaconsfield, if I was having a bad day I'd call up the GP and he'd say 'get the boat ready, we're going sailing'.

"I've been sailing since I was eight years old. All my life. That's the great thing about it, you can turn your phone off out there and no-one can find you."

Mr Webb said the Old Saltys group was intended for "sailors who are too old to race and too young to cruise".

"It gives us old folk a new lease on life. The whole thing is to connect people, to put the unity in community, which we lost during COVID."

Mr Payne, a recent transplant from New Zealand, said he was heartbroken by the condition of the Mark Twain when he first found it in 2020.

"When I saw it, it broke my heart," he said, adding that he had the opportunity to "do something about" refurbishing the "old girl".

"We're only ever the custodians of these extraordinary vessels."

Once a fine racing yacht, the Mark Twain had fallen into disrepair in port at George Town in recent years.

From its first entry in the Sydney to Hobart in 1971, the boat long held the steadily increasing record for the greatest number of entries in the iconic race, even managing to clinch podium finishes for its class on several occasions.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, it competed in more than 20 Sydney to Hobart races, and in 2002 became the first-ever boat to have sailed in 25.

"Thousands of men and women have sailed on this beautiful vessel," Mr Payne said.

It was bought and refurbished for its 26th entry by veteran Sydney to Hobart skipper Michael Spies in 2018, but that was the last time it took part.

Mr Payne spent several months last year refurbishing the boat's hull himself and on Wednesday, March 27, the mast and boom were removed to be restored by a Beauty Point shipwright.

Along with Mr Webb, he hopes to take the Mark Twain around Tasmania, Australia and New Zealand and share their knowledge of the seas.

"My encouragement to youth is to get into sailing and you know, become part of the community within those sailing clubs," Mr Payne said.

"You don't necessarily have to own a huge boat … you can be in a little sabot [dinghy] and have that experience on the water. It's life changing and transformational."

He is keen to share the refurbishment project with anyone who wants to be involved and hopes the Mark Twain will sail again in the next two to three years.
