Rather than attending the Muppets' annual Halloween party, Gonzo and Pepe are en route to participate in a fear challenge event in the mansion where Gonzo's favorite magician, The Great MacGuffin , disappeared. Upon being dropped off by their driver ( Yvette Nicole Brown ), Gonzo and Pepe meet the caretaker ( Darren Criss ), along with several ghosts and singing busts outside the mansion who perform " Rest In Peace ."

The duo is then greeted by their "Ghost Host" ( Will Arnett ) who informs them that Gonzo was invited there to see if he can survive one night inside this haunted mansion. And if they cannot, they will be trapped there forever. While Gonzo claims that he is afraid of nothing, Pepe is scared by everything he sees. The two explore the mansion and, after meeting Madam Pigota , Gonzo and Pepe come across a room full of several ghosts resembling their Muppet friends who put on a vaudevillian-esque show entitled The Mansion Show (featuring At the Dance style jokes, the stand up comedy of Gauzey the Hatbox Bear , and a performance of " Life Hereafter "). The host reappears and informs Gonzo that in order to survive his time in the mansion he must face his fears in Room 999.

As Gonzo is led off to the room, Pepe meets and becomes entranced by the mansion's resident bride Constance Hatchaway ( Taraji P. Henson ). It is revealed via song in the " Tie the Knot Tango " that she plans to marry Pepe and then, as explained by the ghosts of her past husbands, kill him.

Gonzo enters Room 999 and faces his biggest fear: that no one will like him if he does not continue to do dangerous stunts. Gonzo starts to turn old as his reflection taunts him, but recalling a conversation with Kermit that he had earlier, Gonzo realizes that he can be great by just being Gonzo and, upon looking out at the party he's missing, he realizes that his bigger fear is losing his friends (and no stunt is worth that). Gonzo rejects the allure of the mansion and its challenge and is ready to leave to reunite with his friends.

The host appears to congratulate Gonzo for facing his fears and tells him that he is free to go. But upon realizing that sunrise is approaching and that Pepe is in trouble, Gonzo refuses to leave the mansion without him. With the help of the host's candelabra, Gonzo is able to find Pepe and stop the wedding. The pair jump out the window and make it out of the mansion just as the sun rises. The host meets them outside, revealing himself to be the ghost of the Great MacGuffin, and is impressed that Gonzo was willing to do what he could not - face his fears. The pair are picked up by their driver and head off to meet the rest of their friends for a post-Halloween breakfast, accompanied by the Hitchhiking Ghosts as " Dancing in the Moonlight " plays on the car's radio and a rainbow appears in the sky.

  • Early in production, a scene was planned involving Dr. Phil van Neuter, Mulch, Bunsen, and Beaker in a lab examining the inside of Gonzo's head. Due to time and budget constraints, the scene was ultimately scrapped and the characters were placed elsewhere in the special. [1] Another abandoned concept involved Pepe looking for " bunnies " in the mansion and encounters cute, Muppet rabbits who then turn into fanged beasts. [2] Gags were also considered for a number of characters who ended up not appearing, including Bean Bunny , Bobby Benson , and Thog . [3]
  • Many of the costumes used for the characters were previously used in earlier films and specials, such as The Muppet Christmas Carol . [4]

Production [ ]

The project initially began in late 2019/early 2020, with full production intended to take place in March 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , it was suspended until much later that year. The special then began shooting over the course of three-and-a-half weeks in April 2021. [5] Prior to the pandemic shutdown, the proposed version of the special was to run 90 minutes instead of the finalized 50-minute special. [6]

The special is notably the first Muppet production to be primarily shot in an LED Volume, using LED screens to create virtual sets rather than green or bluescreens. [7] [8] Green and bluescreens were used as well, particularly for the Muppets as ghosts. A small amount of physical, practical sets were used, such as Constance's attic and the Muppets' Halloween party room. [9]

  • The numbers on the mansion 924 are a reference to Muppets creator Jim Henson 's birthday ( September 24 ).
  • Danny Trejo appears as a prisoner ghost, referencing his role as a Gulag prisoner in Muppets Most Wanted (2014).
  • Among the celebrities Pepe hopes to meet at a big Hollywood Halloween party when asking the Ghost Host about whether there's any "famous peoples" at the Mansion is Ryan Gosling , who was attached to Guillermo del Toro 's cancelled Haunted Mansion reboot.
  • The scene in which the ghosts tell bad jokes while dancing is an homage to the "At the Dance" sketch from The Muppet Show .
  • The Ghost Host's introduction to Gonzo and Pepe's funerals is strikingly similar to Lumiere 's opening lines at the start of the song.
  • After the Host sings about a flying candelabra, Rizzo sings the lines "But he ain't french and he can’t croon", clearly referencing Lumiere. Yolanda and the Host then sing "We did that in a beastly cartoon. She was a beauty".
  • One of the lyrics is "We tell jokes. I do tricks. With my deadly candlesticks", a nod to the line "We tell jokes. I do tricks. With my fellow candlesticks" from "Be Our Guest".
  • The Ghost Host’s line, "You’re all alone, but don’t be scared, we’ve got your wake all pre-prepared." references Lumiere’s line, "You’re alone and you’re scared But the banquet’s all prepared."
  • Another lyric is "corpse by corpse and one by one, til you shout my life is done" a nod to the line "course by course, one by one, til you shout enough I'm done"
  • One of the ending shots from the "Life Hereafter" song references one of the closing shots from The Muppet Show 's opening theme .
  • When Gonzo relates to his mirror some of the stunts he did, footage from previous Muppets productions (such as Muppets Tonight ) can be seen.
  • The organ part of the song " Grim Grinning Ghosts " can be heard through the special.
  • The special's closing shot is an homage to the title credits for The Muppet Movie .

Muppets Haunted Mansion is a Disney+ original special, released on October 8, 2021. The special is notably The Muppets ’ very first Halloween special and a crossover with The Haunted Mansion franchise, marking the second live-action adaptation of the ride following the 2003 film .

On Halloween night, Gonzo and Pepe the King Prawn are challenged to spend the night in a mysterious mansion where a famed magician disappeared centuries ago. During their stay, the duo encounter ghosts, monsters, and their Muppet friends taking on various roles from the attraction (such as Miss Piggy as Madame Pigota and Fozzie as Gauzey, the Hatbox Bear).

Includes examples of

  • Adaptational Attractiveness : The Caretaker is much younger and more handsome than his ride counterpart.
  • And You Were There : The Mansion's residents taking on the forms of all the various Muppet characters is the result of them responding to Gonzo and Pepe's sympathetic vibrations and taking on A Form You Are Comfortable With .
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With : Many ghosts in the Mansion look similar to Muppet characters to Gonzo and Pepe because "the spirits are responding to their sympathetic vibrations". note  This wouldn't be a question in other Muppet adaptions, but the "real" Kermit, Piggy and so on appear elsewhere in the movie, presumably justifying the need for this Hand Wave of why certain ghosts in the Mansion look so similar to them.
  • Armor-Piercing Response : In Room 999, Gonzo comes face to face with his reflection in a mirror, and tries to deny that he has a fear, given all the dangerous stunts he's done over the years. Gonzo: I've been shot out of a cannon, strapped to a rocket, gone skydiving without a parachute, I've done it all! And lived to tell. Gonzo's Reflection: Tell who? Looks to me like you're all alone. (the word "alone" begins echoing)
  • Bedsheet Ghost : A few muppet versions of these appear as extras.
  • Black Widow : Constance Hatchaway, just as she was in the ride. The ghosts of her ex-husbands are trapped in the attic with her, and she intends to do the same to Pepe .
  • Bowdlerise : The stretching room is noticeably missing one corpse hanging from the ceiling.
  • Dr. Honeydew and Beaker lampshade their brief cameo (as busts) being caused by budget issues.
  • Miss Piggy, as Madame Pigota, complains about her small role and being stuck in a crystal ball.
  • After Pepe explains a joke Gonzo made , a ghost appears and promises the audience it won’t happen again.
  • At the end, Statler and Waldorf tell the viewer to go home before realizing they are at home.
  • The Bus Came Back : A number of long-absent Muppet characters, including Johnny Fiama, Sal Minella, Dr. Phil Van Neuter, and Mulch return as ghosts. Doubles for the performers as well, as this is Brian Henson's first performance in a Muppet production since The Muppets' Wizard of Oz in 2005, and he gets a special mention in the closing credits.
  • The screaming goat Gonzo and Pepe encounter throughout the special originally appeared in Muppets Now , as did Joe from Legal, who pops up as a ghost in an 18th century judge's wig.
  • Danny Trejo appears as ghostly prisoner Huet, having previously appeared as a prisoner in Muppets Most Wanted (and a deleted scene from The Muppets (2011) ).
  • In the party scenes, the dancers make jokes between themselves in a manner reminiscent of the At the Dance sketches from The Muppet Show .
  • Kermit's ghost persona in the Mansion hosts "The Mansion Show", a clear take-off on The Muppet Show .
  • The Electric Mayhem and Robin the Frog wear their same costumes from The Muppet Christmas Carol . Muppet projects don't typically have continuity between films, but if there was, some saddening possibilities for Robin's portrayal of Tiny Tim Cratchit emerge.
  • In the denouement, Kermit mutters in sympathy when Pepe says that he was nearly tricked into getting married , referencing events in The Muppets Take Manhattan and the Marisa Berenson episode of The Muppet Show .
  • Cameo Cluster : A majority of the celebrity cameos occur during the "Rest in Peace" song (as ghosts and singing busts).
  • Mary, the mystery writer, is the only one of the graveyard ghosts in the Rest in Peace song number not to correspond to an actual tombstone in the ride's Family Plot. (There is a female writer in the interactive queue of the Walt Disney World Mansion , but she's called Prudence.)

haunted mansion the muppets

  • During the ballroom dance scene, a ghostly turkey is asked about her Thanksgiving plans and replies that her friends are having her for dinner.
  • Censored for Comedy : The penguin's verse in "Tie The Knot Tango" is sung entirely in penguin noises, but at the end of it, the other grooms react in shock, telling him "You can't say things like that, this is a family show!"
  • Chekhov's Skill : Gonzo's daredevil skills prove vital to saving Pepe and escaping the mansion before sunrise.
  • Clothing Switch : Piggy and Kermit dress as each other at the costume party. Judging from Kermit’s reaction, this was all Piggy's idea.
  • Company Cross References : Several lyrics in "Life Hereafter" resemble those from Beauty and the Beast 's "Be Our Guest". It's lampshaded with Yolanda's line about a " beastly cartoon".
  • Cradling Your Kill : During the wedding scene, one of Constance's ghost husbands gets disturbingly teary-eyed over how gently she broke his neck on their wedding night.
  • Crossover : Between The Muppets and The Haunted Mansion , with the Muppets and their usual round of celebrity cameos portraying the mansion's famous spirits.
  • Curse Cut Short : From the trailer: Narrator ( Corey Burton ): All lucky souls will live to tell, and those who don't... will rot in— (cut to Muppets as ghosts) Sal Minella: What's the matter with you?! You can't say that! This is a family show! Johnny Fiama: What are you doing?
  • Dance Party Ending : During the credits, the Muppets and the human cast sing and dance to the Electric Mayhem's cover of King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight".
  • Darker and Edgier : Ranks with The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island as one of the darker works to feature the Muppet characters, being loaded with Black Comedy , a Serial Killer and her victims, and dire consequences for Gonzo and Pepe, should they fail to escape the mansion before sunrise .
  • A Day in the Limelight : The film is largely centered on Gonzo and Pepe, with the other Muppets largely taking a backseat for most of the special.
  • The Dead Can Dance : If "Life Hereafter" proves anything, it's that Muppet ghosts can still cut a rug.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation : 4 of Constance's husbands died in ways other than being beheaded here.
  • Don't Explain the Joke : Early on, a Muppet ghost assures viewers that they're not going to lampshade every joke.
  • Elvis Impersonator : Scooter dresses as Elvis Presley for Halloween.
  • Face Your Fears : Gonzo is told he has to face his fears, which confuses him as he doesn't believe he has any. It turns out to be growing old and forgotten without his friends.
  • Follow the Bouncing Ball : Briefly during "Life Hereafter".
  • Funny Background Event : At Kermit's Halloween party, various Muppets appear in their own Halloween costumes. Fozzie is dressed as a banana, Clean Gene is a bunny, Chip is a robot, Floyd Pepper is a clown, and a pair of cacti wear Santa hats.
  • Freudian Slip : In her clumsy attempts to flirt with Pepe in Spanish, Constance tries to say "gamba" (prawn) and instead says "gumbo"(a stew from Louisiana that includes shellfish… which prawns like Pepe are). Later in the attic, the ghosts of Constance's husbands compare the various ways she killed them and speculate that she plans to literally eat Pepe alive .
  • Gratuitous Spanish : Appears as a running gag with how the human ghosts talk to Pepe. The Host speaks Spanish quite well and claims to have grown up in Málaga, but when asked "¿Hablas español?", he gives a firm, English-language "No." Constance Hatchaway, on the other hand, answers "Sí", but her Spanish is considerably weaker, mainly just using it to pique Pepe's interest in her. She also foreshadows her true nature to the lovesick prawn by calling him "gumbo" (a stew from Louisiana that includes shellfish such as prawns) instead of "gamba", the real word.
  • Halloween Episode : Billed as one for The Muppets , being set on Halloween as Gonzo and Pepe skip out on a costume party with their friends to take on the Mansion's challenge.
  • Here We Go Again! : Uncle Deadly's reaction to officiating Constance's wedding.
  • Hidden Depths : The special reveals Gonzo's three biggest fears: 1, being trapped alone, 2, that no one will care about him if he doesn’t do his crazy stunts, and 3, that he’ll never see his friends again because he blew them off to take the challenge .
  • Insistent Terminology : Pepe is repeatedly offended when other characters fail to recognize him as a king prawn. Not only does Constance seduce him by calling him by his actual species, but he's so snubbed by the Caretaker calling him a "shrimp" in his gravestone's inscription that he doesn't even notice his name is also carved in error (Pepper).
  • Late to the Realization : Early on in the film, Pepe assumes that the challenge at the Mansion is a celebrity party, despite Gonzo repeatedly telling him otherwise. He only truly realizes what he's gotten himself into after John Stamos suddenly transforms into a purple Frackle and roars in his face, promptly resulting in him freaking and wanting a way out.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall : At the end of the movie, Pepe wonders why he agreed to go to a party with Gonzo. This is in reference to the fact that normally Rizzo would go along with those antics.
  • Leave No Witnesses : Implied to be the reason why Sal Minella is among the group of Constance's husbands given how inseparable he is from Johnny Fiama.
  • MacGuffin : Lampshaded. Gonzo's Halloween costume is that of famed magician the Great MacGuffin and the titular mansion is where he was last seen before mysteriously disappearing. In fact, MacGuffin is ultimately revealed to be the Ghost Host himself.
  • Much is made of stage magic throughout the special, and Pepe mistakenly thinks the ghosts he meets are "animatronics". Many of the ghosts in the actual ride are (of course) animatronics, and for other special effects, Imagineer Yale Gracey drew extensively on classic stage magic. The very first tie-in book based on the Haunted Mansion was a handbook of magic illustrated with Mansion character, entitled Magic from the Haunted Mansion , which also already featured the Ghost Host as a magician , albeit under the name of Phineas J. Pock rather than MacGuffin , and with a design closer to the "Hatchet Man" as seen above .
  • Kim Irvine, a Walt Disney Imagineer and daughter of the original Madame Leota (Leota Toombs), appears as the Mansion maid. Fittingly, she's the one tending to Madam Pigota's crystal ball. Her maid costume is patterned after the costumes female Cast Members wear at the attraction in Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
  • The song "Rest in Peace" ends with a verse from "Grim Grinning Ghosts".
  • The exterior of the mansion resembles Ken Anderson and Sam McKim's original sketches for the mansion, before they settled with the antebellum look seen at Disneyland.
  • At the Ballroom, a ghostly octopus and a ghostly Frankenstein's Monster (Mulch from Muppets Tonight ) are used. Both were featured in Ken Anderson concept art but later abandoned.
  • Sweetums's appearance may be an allusion to how the Endless Hallway originally didn't have a candelabra, with his headlamp creating a glowing haze like the mirror at the back of the hallway creating the infinite effect. This candle-free version of the scene used gusts of cold air and increasingly loud sounds to imply something invisible was rushing towards guests, which Sweetums's fast moving cart essentially does when it picks up Gonzo and Pepe.
  • Upon their arrival, the Ghost Host warns that flash photography is prohibited, as "the spirits are sensitive to bright lights". This is a word-for-word quote from the ride's "No Talking or Phones" Warning .
  • The portraits (and their twists) in the stretching room are all accurate to those in the ride, with the exceptions of Muppet characters being their subjects.
  • The Ghost Host instructs Gonzo to go to Room 999 to face his fears - 999 being the number of ghosts residing in the mansion.
  • The scene with old Gonzo in room 999 may be a reference to the Aging Man/ Dorian Gracey changing portrait in Magic Kingdom
  • The Oner revealing the mansion's ballroom displays the Muppet ghosts dancing and making bad puns and jokes, not unlike the "At the Dance" segments from The Muppet Show .
  • A pull-back shot of singing ghost Muppets, framed by a series of arches overlooking the ballroom, recapitulates the wall-of-balconies sequence in The Muppet Show 's opening song.
  • The final verses of "Life Hereafter" use the melody of the The Muppet Show theme.
  • Statler and Waldorf appear as ghostly tourists riding Doom Buggies from the ride itself. At one point, the 'ride' even breaks down with the emergency announcement playing overhead.
  • In the ride, while going through the Attic, you see a photo from each of Constance Hatchaway's weddings; one by one their heads disappear, and Constance adds another strand of pearls to her necklace. When she brings Pepe back to the Attic, she's wearing not only the same wedding dress but a five strand pearl necklace.
  • At the climax, Gonzo saves Pepe from Constance by jumping through her top floor window, much like how the riders leave the mansion and enter the graveyard in the ride .
  • As Gonzo and Pepe flee the mansion, Hatchaway calls out to them to "Hurry Back...", referencing Little Leota's parting words to guests exiting the ride.
  • The Hitchhiking Ghosts cameo at the end, sneaking into the taxi behind Gonzo and Pepe. Noticeably, they are animated using the CG models from the Walt Disney World version's updated scene and not played by any humans or muppets.
  • The Mansion's house number is 924, a reference to Jim Henson 's birthday, September 24.
  • What appears behind the title card before the end credits? A rainbow!
  • One of the "famous peoples" Pepe hopes to meet at the big Hollywood Halloween party he thinks is happening at the Mansion is Ryan Gosling , who was attached to the cancelled Guillermo del Toro Haunted Mansion film.
  • When Gonzo and Pepe get swept up by Sweetums's trolley, Gonzo says he knew the building had a ride.
  • "Sympathetic vibrations" are also referenced by the Ghost Host as ride vehicles enter the Grand Hall.
  • Number of the Beast : Appears once Gonzo enters room 999. The number plate flips upside-down to reveal "666".
  • Painful Rhyme : When Pepe asks for a way out, Madame Pigota replies, "Pumpkin spice lattes and a vampire bat / You must find a door with the glowing 'Exat'." When called out for this, she says they should try rhyming things with "bat". Pepe immediately lists "fat", "rat", and "hat", at which point Bubba the Rat wearing a top hat appears and points them towards a glowing sign that reads "EXAT". Bubba: I prefer husky.
  • Portrait Painting Peephole : The eyes on the portrait of the Great MacGuffin are seen moving once Gonzo and Pepe leave the room.
  • Prematurely Marked Grave : When Gonzo and Pepe succeeded in getting out of the mansion before sunrise, the Groundskeeper is surprised, having just set up their tombstones. Pepe is annoyed that he's referred to as a shrimp .
  • Race Lift : Like Elizabeth Henshaw from the 2003 film, the bride, Constance Hatchaway in this version, is played by African-American actress Taraji P. Henson.
  • Rapid Aging : Gonzo is hit with an extreme case of this in room 999. It is so severe, his hands are reduced to skeletons.
  • Red Herring : The Great MacGuffin is accompanied by his Red Herring, Pee Wee, who is French for some reason. Double subverted with the trope itself in that The words "red herring" on the Great MacGuffin 's poster were referring to Pee Wee rather than either of them possibly not being involved.
  • The Reveal : The Ghost Host, at the end, reveals himself to be Gonzo’s idol, The Great MacGuffin , a magician who had vanished inside the mansion a century prior.
  • Same Character, But Different : Since Rizzo the Rat has yet to be recast following the firing of his performer Steve Whitmire, Pepe takes over the role of Gonzo's second banana. Still, the Rizzo puppet appears in the special for one line in "Life Hereafter", listed in the credits simply as "Ballroom Rat". Rizzo himself appears briefly as a blackjack dealer throwing poker chips.
  • Secret Test of Character : You can only survive the Mansion by doing two things: Face Your Fears and know when to leave. Most people don't know that you have to stay until dawn breaks, and they usually succumb to their fears or temptations well before then. Gonzo is able to not only face his fears but use his death-defying stunts to rescue Pepe from being trapped forever. MacGuffin tells Gonzo that it was brave of him to risk his life for his friend, and that's why he's letting them go a few seconds past dawn .
  • Kermit's ghost persona riffs on the "friends, Romans, and countrymen" lines from Julius Caesar in the lead-up to "Life Hereafter".
  • "We now will invite you to sit back, and relax, as our 999 residents proudly present: Your funeral!"
  • In the climax, Gonzo races by Andy and Randy Pig as creepy twin ghosts inviting him to play a la The Shining .
  • Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Trailer : Uncle Deadly. You would think that his previous reputation as the Phantom of the Muppet Show would be prime fodder to show him in marketing materials. Alas, he only shows up in the Disney Parks Blog's "Halfway to Halloween" video tour. In the special itself he officiates Hatchaway and Pepe's wedding .
  • The Stinger : When the credits end, in a carryover from The Muppet Show , Statler and Waldorf provide their traditional last heckle.
  • Unseen No More : On the rides, the Ghost Host almost always presents himself to the guests as a disembodied voice (with maybe a corpse hanging from the ceiling). Here, he’s fully visible and played by Will Arnett .
  • Vanity License Plate : The car dropping Gonzo and Pepe off at the mansion has one that fittingly reads "2-DIE-4". It changes to "D-END" when it picks them up the following morning.
  • Villain Song : Hatchaway gets one in the form of "The Tie The Knot Tango", with Pepe and her husbands/victims.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious : Normally, Pepe is confused for a shrimp . When they correctly identify him as a prawn, the audience knows something is up (whereas Pepe is just happy people are getting it right). Only once is he mistaken for a shrimp, on the Caretaker's gravestone.

Muppets Haunted Mansion

Few brands are better suited to mine preexisting intellectual property than the Muppets . From A Christmas Carol to Treasure Island to countless parodic sketches and interludes, the synthetic ensemble has demonstrated a unique ability to smartly insert its myriad felt archetypes into almost any story.

Of course, because everybody knows the resilience of the Muppet brand, too often there’s an attempt to shoehorn the beloved characters into properties with a high concept but no actual story. That’s probably why Disney+ ‘s new holiday special Muppets Haunted Mansion doesn’t quite feel like a cash-in violation, but definitely feels like a disappointment.

Airdate: Friday, Oct. 8

Cast: Gonzo, Pepe the King Prawn, Will Arnett, Darren Criss, Taraji P. Henson, Yvette Nicole Brown

Director:  Kirk R. Thatcher

Screenwriters: Kirk R. Thatcher, Kelly Younger, Bill Barretta

The Muppets are actually astonishingly well suited to the flexible outline offered by the popular Disney attraction, yet it’s a waste to make them subservient to a theme park ride rather than weaving the merits of a theme park ride around the Muppets. Muppets Haunted Mansion has almost no story, makes sparing use of its guest cast and, at only 49 minutes, still feels pointlessly padded, like getting stuck in a Doom Buggy with Gonzo and Pepe the King Prawn — surely not the worst fate in the world, but far from living up to ample potential.

Such as it is, the plot of Muppets Haunted Mansion revolves around Gonzo and Pepe attending a spooky evening at a haunted mansion (aka Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion) celebrating the 100th anniversary of the disappearance of Gonzo’s magical hero, the Great MacGuffin. Gonzo hopes to make it through a full night in the house to prove his own greatness, while Pepe hopes that the event will be packed with VIPs. One thing it surely won’t be packed with is fellow Muppets, because in order to attend the frightful gala, Gonzo and Pepe have to miss the Muppets’ annual Halloween costume party.

“Every year, same thing, same Muppets. We see them all the times,” Pepe opines, though it’s doubtful that fans will be quite so sanguine about a special that reduces Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Statler and Waldorf and the rest to negligible cameos. They’re there, but rarely deployed in a smart way.

The celebrity cameos are even more flimsy. You have Yvette Nicole Brown as the hearse driver who takes Gonzo and Pepe to their destination, Will Arnett well cast as the gravel-voiced Ghost Host and John Stamos as himself, kinda. We should all be vaguely relieved that neither Brown nor Stamos mention their new series Big Shot  and that Disney didn’t lobby for a Hooch cameo.

There’s at least some value in getting Darren Criss to sing an overproduced variation on “Grim Grinning Ghosts” as a cemetery caretaker and in Taraji P. Henson’s turn as murderous bride Constance Hatchaway, which cannot be said for the likes of Danny Trejo, Chrissy Metz and Alfonso Ribeiro in one-line roles as blue-tinted ghosts. As another wandering spirit, the late Ed Asner doesn’t have a single line, and it wasn’t until the closing credits that I realized the swiveling busts were played by the likes of Justina Machado, Craig Robinson and Pat Sajak. I assume everybody had fun.

The people who made Muppets Haunted Mansion know the Muppets. Director Kirk R. Thatcher has been writing or directing Muppet-related productions for two decades, and he co-wrote the script with puppeteer-scribe Bill “Pepe” Barretta and Kelly Younger, who was part of the story team on Muppets Now . Yet most of the writing is taken directly from the theme park attraction, came tangentially from incidents featured in the attraction, or is meant to emulate the tone of the attraction’s script. Even if the Muppet sensibility of meta-commentary and aggressive punnery is completely compatible with that humor, this is the flimsiest version of it.

Anybody who knows me knows my love of puns and dad jokes, but there are punchlines here that aren’t even puns, like when Pepe says he’s looking forward to a swag bag or parting gifts and Gonzo replies, “You mean departing gifts.” That’s not a joke. I’m more partial to autopilot wordplay: Fozzie making cracks about playing to a dead crowd or Rowlf jokes about how he enjoys entertaining for skeletons because it means all the bones he can eat.

The special just meanders along, with the Ghost Host occasionally directing people to new rooms, without any endgame purpose for the story. Does Gonzo really need to learn a lesson about loving himself and facing fear? The guy has always seemed pretty confident. And Pepe’s there just because the new generation of Muppet creatives loves Pepe.

Muppets completists will enjoy Muppets Haunted Mansion on a very basic level, and I’m pretty sure younger viewers will find chuckles here and there. But there’s nothing to shake the suspicion that has built up in the past five or so years, going back to the short-lived ABC series and continuing with the most recent Disney+ series, that the caretakers of the brand don’t have any good ideas for what to do with the Muppets.

This one at least doesn’t make me sad, but I’ve never understood why a straightforward reboot of The Muppet Show was so complicated to develop. Meanwhile, anybody who has ever read an interview with Ted Lasso Emmy winner Brett Goldstein knows that he’s a Muppet fanatic. Why not give him a crack at the Muppets instead of just letting them meander through another piece of corporate cross-promotion?

Muppets Haunted Mansion Review

Gonzo the great gets to star in the muppets' first halloween special..

Muppets Haunted Mansion Review - IGN Image

Muppet Haunted Mansion premieres Oct. 8 on Disney+.

Shocking as it may be, The Muppets, as a performing troupe, have never had their own Halloween special. Yes, it’s an entertainment tragedy, but one that is thankfully finally remedied with the Disney+ original, Muppets Haunted Mansion.

The one-hour special includes all the familiar faces, from Kermit to Miss Piggy and everyone in between, but the narrative belongs to Gonzo the Great (Dave Goelz), with Pepe the King Prawn (Bill Barretta) handling side-crustacean duties. That dynamic is truly the perfect alignment of weirdo to holiday, giving the fearless daredevil a tailor-made opportunity to show off his nerves of steel and reinforce some core Muppet tenets about the importance of family, be it found or biological.

What's your favorite Muppet holiday special?

Set on Halloween night, Gonzo and Pepe skip out on Kermit (Matt Vogel) and Miss Piggy’s (Eric Jacobson) big party to accept the challenge of staying overnight in the creepy mansion of famed magician The Great MacGuffin on the 100th anniversary of his disappearance. Since Gonzo has proven over and over again that he has no fear, he figures the night will be a lark. Pepe, not so much.

The mansion itself is modeled on the much-loved theme park ride, The Haunted Mansion, with The Muppets slipping into the iconic characters found inside and outside of the ride. The swaps are pretty inspired, from Fozzie as the Hatbox bear (including teeth!) to Piggy as the disembodied crystal ball head of Madame Pigota. Writers Kirk Thatcher, Kelly Younger, and long-time Muppet performer Bill Barretta have crafted a framing device, and sequences within, that make the mash-up feel delightfully natural and never forced. The Muppet wit is particularly funny and ranges from the extremely clever to the familiar, like Waldorf and Statler as heckling ghosts inside the ride carts, down to the incredibly silly; wait for the goat.

Fall TV 2021 Streaming Preview: Biggest New and Returning Shows

Click through to find a quick look at the notable new and returning series headed your way through December 2021, and for the shows airing on network or cable channels, you'll find secondary streaming options for all the cord-cutters out there.

There are also three new original songs that lend themselves nicely to the Mansion theme, with some gifted pun usage. They may not be instant classics on par with recent efforts for the last two Muppet films, but they are a lot of fun and utilize the depth and breadth of the Muppet bench to bring them to life, which is always a plus. A great Muppet special is one that honors all eras of the felt performers, and this special does that by including some deep cut appearances like the ghosts in the mansion (going back to The Muppet Show days) to newbies like Walter and Joe the Weasel.

As for the humans, Will Arnett is so perfectly attuned to performing with the Muppets, I’m kinda mad that he hasn’t been a fixture in these projects for years. Taraji P. Henson is also having a great time as resident black widow ghost, Constance Hatchaway. Her side story goes on a little too long in parts but her storyline will appeal to the hardcore Haunted Mansion fans. The rogue’s gallery of other human talent are basically relegated to very small cameos but that means the focus can remain on Gonzo and the other Muppets, as it should.

The Muppets have had some bumpy years under their Disney ownership with the company trying to reinvent them, or modernize them for contemporary audiences. What they keep forgetting is that The Muppets at their best are timeless, and this special captures much of that spirit because of the performance and writing mix of Goelz and Baretta. The old-timers of the current Muppet crew, they convey the right blend of Henson heart and silliness that makes this offering one worthy of a yearly watch.

Muppets Haunted Mansion could have been a corporate synergy nightmare merging The Muppets with the classic Disney theme parks ride. Instead, it’s a seasonal winner because of the ingenious mix of Halloween with two much-loved properties that all blend together perfectly. From the production design to the cameos, all down the way to Gonzo’s impactful and wee bit scary lesson about the importance of your family, this whole special lands the trick of being a huge treat.

Glee star Darren Criss also makes his way to the Muppets Haunted Mansion. Joining are Alfonso Riberio and Chrissy Metz, while other names include Yvette Nicole Brown, Geoff Keighley, Jeannie Mai, Danny Trejo, Sasheer Zamata, Skai Jackson, Justina Machado and others.

Do I need to watch anything to prepare for Muppets Haunted Mansion?

Though you can watch the Disney film  The Haunted Mansion , starring Eddie Murphy, on Disney Plus, perhaps the best way to learn about the story of the mansion is to watch the Haunted Mansion episode of Disney's Behind the Attraction , also on the same streaming service. And of course you can enjoy The Muppet Show on Disney Plus. The series, which originally ran from 1976 to 1981 and became a huge worldwide hit, evolved into the Muppets movie and TV franchise.

'The Muppet Show' original series currently on Disney Plus

Before watching Muppets Haunted Mansion , you can currently enjoy all episodes of The Muppet Show on Disney Plus. This original series ran from 1976 to 1981 and was filmed at Britain’s Elstree Studios just outside London. It became a huge hit around the world and set the Muppets on course for further success with their movie and TV franchise.

Devised by master puppeteer Jim Henson, roving reporter Kermit the frog had already appeared in preschool series Sesame Street , but The Muppet Show introduced us to new faces such as Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the Swedish Chef plus musicians such as Dr Teeth and Animal. They all seen in a theatre putting on a variety show and introduced a guest star every episode. The guests got ever more illustrious through the run of The Muppet Show , with the likes of Sir Elton John, Ethel Merman, John Denver, Liza Minnelli, Bruce Forsyth, Rudolf Nureyev and more (tune in to see!). Among the regular sketches were Veterinarians Hospital, Pigs In Space and the cantankerous old gentlemen Statler and Warldorf who’d heckle performers from their theatre box.

Movie review.

The Great Gonzo has never been afraid of a challenge.

He’s been shot out of cannons, ridden roughshod on rockets, even gone skydiving without a parachute. So when he learned that he had the chance to participate in a “once-in-a-lifetime fear challenge”—to spend the night in the world’s most haunted mansion—he couldn’t pass that up. Not even if it means skipping the Muppets’ annual Halloween party.

So Gonzo and his good pal, Pepe the Prawn, hop into a waiting limosuine and speed off to this macabre mansion to see what all the fearsome fuss is about. Gonzo frames the night as the biggest challenge of his career. Pepe sees the outing as a chance to impress the ladies and snag a sweet swag bag of excellent parting gifts.

“You mean de -parting gifts,” Gonzo tells him.

But perhaps there’s more to this challenge than meets the floating eye.

The house is indeed haunted, you see. More than 999 spectres stalk its halls and fill its rooms. But even ghosts can use a little new blood now and then. And while you’d think the mansion would be filled to the rafters with them already, seems there’s always room for one more.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA !

Oh, yeah, forgot about Pepe. Two . There’s always room for two more. BWAHAH —oh, never mind. Just read the review.

Positive Elements

Muppets Haunted Mansion doesn’t seem like it’s aiming to communicate a lot of deathless truths or spirited morals. But Gonzo does learn something about his own fears here, and he finds that he must face them.

Could it be that Gonzo might be a little scared of his own self-worth? Many a psychologist might point out that most well-adjusted puppets do not affix the word “Great” to their names, after all. Kermit tries to tell him so at the show’s very outset: “You don’t have to be The Great Gonzo to be great, Gonzo,” the wise amphibian tells him.

Gonzo discovers as much (though he’s likely to forget by the next Disney+ special). And he performs an act of great courage eventually.

Spiritual Elements

Spiritual content, you say? Never was a content subheading so apt. The contents of the mansion are filled with spirits.

We see oodles of the 999 spectral squatters and hear passing references to the afterlife. Gauzey the Housebox Bear (an undead version of Fozzy the Bear, of course) performs at the mansion, telling his audience, “Usually I’m worried about dying up here, but it looks like you beat me to it!” This is, naturally, to be expected. But the show does offer a few slightly darker and more cautionary turns.

Anyone who’s been through Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride is well aware of Madame Leota, the disembodied medium who chants various creepy phrases from the inside of a crystal ball. There’s a version of Leota here who repeats those phrases (“Awaken the spirits with your tambourine!” she says), and someone mentions that the medium is obviously leading a “séance.” We hear that the spirits respond to visitors’ “sympathetic vibrations,” another pull straight from the Disney ride.

An especially fearsome room is labeled with “666,” and a quick scene depicts some fire-and-brimstone effects (along with some horned, slightly devilish-looking Muppets). Gauzey makes a joke about exorcism. A chauffer proclaims, “My Lord of Friday!” There’s also a near-wedding that takes place in front of an altar …

Sexual Content

… with the wedding officiated by Uncle Deadly, who in recent Muppet incarnations has been gay. (His role here though, obviously, doesn’t include a lot of romance.)

At the Muppet Halloween party, Miss Piggy and Kermit dress up as each other (thus comically switching both gender and species, if that’s an issue for anyone). A portrait depicts someone in comical boxers. Pepe mentions that Gonzo is dating a chicken, and he sees himself as something of a ladies’ man. But when he enters the mansion, he falls in love and nearly marries.

Violent Content

The bride? It’s “The Bride,” of course, from the Haunted Mansion ride—a ghost wearing a wedding dress that apparently makes a habit of cutting the heads off her (many) grooms. We see the axe, and the bride (Constance Hatchaway, if you must know) mentions that one of her favorite pastimes is sharpening cutlery. The Muppet ghosts of her many late husbands appear, and some describe their fates (one says he was chopped up). The bride tells Pepe that she wants to “ kill you with kindness, drown you with kisses.” “I could just eat you alive!” she says at another juncture.

We also hear plenty of references to dying and mutilation and whatnot, which sounds worse than it is. An example: When Gonzo tells his ghost host that someone could unscrew his head and take a look inside, the host says, “That could be arranged.” Another: Gauzey’s head vanishes from the rest of his body and reappears in a hatbox. We see plenty of ghosts and skeletons and skulls, along with a mummy or two. It’s suggested that no one has ever survived the challenge that Gonzo’s embarking on. “I always drop folks off here, but I never seem to pick them up,” the chauffer says.

But the only real physical violence we see is when a cart full of food smacks into Gonzo and Pepe (which they then ride through the halls), and when someone falls into a gaping mouth from a pretty significant height. (The faller survives, and in fact is burped straight up.) And if you’re sensitive to the fate of spiders, beware: Several are eaten.

Oh, and the Swedish Chef chases a sentient pumpkin with a chainsaw.

Crude or Profane Language

One of The Bride’s former mates—a penguin—quacks up a storm after his fellows describe their sad passing. We can’t hear anything besides those quacks, but his fellow grooms are appalled. “You can’t say that!” One says. “This is a family show!”

But outside that and one use of the work “heck,” this show is clean as a newly scoured tombstone.

Drug and Alcohol Content

Several people seem to carry wine glasses about, including one ghost hanging from a chandelier. Pepe proclaims, “If I don’t see some champagne cocktails and horsey derves, ASPCA, I’m outa here!”

Other Negative Elements

A couple of Muppets burp.

“Welcome, foolish Muppets!”

So says our Ghost Host (played by Will Arnett) near the top of Muppets Haunted Mansion . Those three words neatly sum up exactly what viewers should expect.

Visitors the Haunted Mansion at either California’s Disneyland or Florida’s Disneyworld (and perhaps those Disney parks in France, Japan and China, too) are welcomed with the words “Welcome, foolish mortals!” And in many respects, this show feels like a straight-up tour through that very familiar ride—only with Muppets.

The stretching portraits are there, only depicting famous (or at least semi-famous) Muppets characters. The busts that seem to stare at you are there, too, but they’re Professor Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker. (“I had so hoped we would have a bigger cameo, Beaky,” Honeydew sighs.) The Doom Buggies are represented. The singing graveyard statues sing. The show feels like the ride, right down to the wallpaper, only with a bit of a Muppet twist. And if you haven’t been to Disney’s Haunted Mansion, the show still holds up just fine (even if it might just serve as an hour-long encouragement to go).

Still, some things have gone missing—specifically any elements that might seriously frighten someone. In the early part of the Disney ride , for instance, a lightning bolt illuminates someone hanging from the rafters—an apparent suicide—accompanied by a chilling scream. In Muppets Haunted Mansion , the lights still go off and you still hear a scream… but when the lights come back on, we see that it’s a screaming goat . (Muppetified, of course.) No body in sight.

It’s all quite silly and, often, pretty funny. Despite all the Muppetized skeletal remains we see, the only bone it really cares about is the funny bone.

The show’s biggest caution, naturally (or unnaturally?) is its body of teeming ghosts and all the spiritual questions that invariably lurk behind the mansion’s many doors. Sure, they’re all familiar Muppets characters wearing the equivalent of trick-or-treat sheets, and many a joke offers a wink that the whole thing is just a Disney+ special. Still, some of the darker spiritual elements might feel a little out of place for some Muppet fans.

Muppets Haunted Mansion does indeed feature a mansion. It has plenty of Muppets. But this isn’t the sort of show that’ll haunt you. Indeed, the only things that might follow you home are the eye-rolling, groan-worthy but still somehow-funny puns and gags. If the narrator for this Disney+ ride should offer a warning, it might be, “Beware of hitchhiking jokes!”

Muppets Haunted Mansion on Disney+ Review: A New Halloween Classic!

haunted mansion the muppets

Muppets Haunted Mansion is a new Halloween special on Disney+ that’s based on the theme park ride at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and beyond. This review covers the good and bad of the new show, if it does justice to the iconic attraction and Muppet humor, and whether if it’s worth your time.

Muppets Haunted Mansion has big shoes to fill. For starters, it’s Muppets and Haunted Mansion, two heavyweights in their respective arenas. On top of that, it’s a holiday special following up on the Muppet Christmas Carol. Finally, it treads in the creative footsteps of Eddie Murphy’s modern movie masterpiece.

On second thought, perhaps those last shoes are doll-sized and maybe the bar is considerably lower. Since that 2003 film, there have been unrealized visions for another Haunted Mansion movie, while the Muppets have largely languished under Disney’s control. For some, the idea of combining Muppets and Haunted Mansion is a dream–it feels like this special was made specifically for me –but also had the potential to be a nightmare if we remove the rose-colored glasses.

To begin, Muppets Haunted Mansion finds Gonzo the Great and Pepe the Prawn skipping the annual Muppets Halloween party to embark upon a challenge: staying overnight in the creepy mansion where legendary magician the Great MacGuffin disappeared exactly 100 years ago. Gonzo the Great is fearless, finding the purported challenge to be a walk in the park, whereas Pepe has some reservations.

This is the set-up, a framework of sorts for a variety of vignettes and sequences. In a way, the special is structured a lot like the Haunted Mansion itself. There’s some semblance of a story, but you’re largely just going along for the ride.

haunted mansion the muppets

One of the hallmarks of Muppets humor has always been parody, with the gang deftly inserting themselves into literary masterpieces, history, and more. The Muppet Christmas Carol is an exemplar of this, as that holiday classic is at once rife with Muppet wit and catchy songs, while also being one of the most faithful adaptations of the Dickens novella. It’s both remarkable and inexplicable, really.

The same is true with Muppets Haunted Mansion, although the writers have wisely foregone any attempts at an exacting adaptation of the iconic Walt Disney World and Disneyland attraction. Eschewing a ride-through remake, Muppets Haunted Mansion instead introduces the Great MacGuffin as a clever reference , wink and a nod to the audience about the special’s storytelling intentions, and a smart example of Muppet humor.

haunted mansion the muppets

Even throwing the ride format out the window, Muppets Haunted Mansion remains dutifully committed to faithfully adapting its source material. This instead occurs with a nonstop barrage of visuals, lines pulled directly from the attraction script, character cameos, and more.

The references are wide-ranging and diverse, with something for those who have ridden Haunted Mansion once or over one-hundred times. Many of these are “Muppetized,” with a good example being the special’s twist on the stretching room portraits. One of the most zany and hilarious moments feels targeted directly at me, too. (I don’t want to spoil it, but it reads as a reference to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad or Big Thunder Ranch. You’ll know it when you see it.)

At no point does any of this feel contrived, overly referential, or meta. There’s nothing that can be simply dismissed as fan service or pandering. Rather, the Muppets leverage most of these references to humorous effect, blending something borrowed with something new for a unique end result. Sure, some of it might be lost on those who aren’t fans of the Haunted Mansion, but rewarding more knowledgeable viewers has always been the Muppets’ style.

haunted mansion the muppets

This is the Muppets humor at its best. In Disney’s years of stewardship over the Muppets, their humor has been misunderstood or misapplied more often than not. Some of the resulting shows have felt overly cynical, less timeless and too topical, or tonally wrong.

To be fair, this is a delicate needle to thread. I’m not even sure you’d find consensus among Muppet fans as to which shows hit or miss the mark. The Muppets humor is a mix of showbiz satire, sarcasm, self-awareness, and sentimentality–all effused with a sense of irreverence, but also heart and wholesomeness, while never coming across as mean-spirited. Balancing those sometimes competing elements and suppressing the cynicism is tricky, but it’s an “I know it when I see it” type of thing. Muppets Haunted Mansion is it .

haunted mansion the muppets

That’s what makes Muppets Haunted Mansion such a compelling creation. It shows an earnest respect for the legacies of both Haunted Mansion and the Muppets, balancing the disparate styles of each in a truly impressive manner. The special does complete justice to both.

This was our hope going in, but we didn’t want to get carried away with hype given the Muppets’ recent unevenness. However, they are now under the purview of Walt Disney Imagineering, which presented promise in terms of how the special would pay its respects to Haunted Mansion and the Muppets.

haunted mansion the muppets

Then there’s the team behind this special. Director Kirk Thatcher has been writing for the Muppets for the better part of two decades. He co-wrote the script with Kelly Younger and Bill “Pepe” Barretta, both of whom were on the story team for Muppets Now.

Whether it’s the marriage with Imagineering, the writers finally finding their groove, or a lack of corporate meddling from Disney in trying to force the Muppets into being more relevant and more modern ( that’s my bet! ), Muppets Haunted Mansion finds the sweet spot of Muppet humor.

haunted mansion the muppets

Likewise, Muppets Haunted Mansion does a good job handling celebrity appearances. Will Arnett’s humor melds perfectly with the Muppets, and it almost feels criminal that he hasn’t appeared alongside them before. As a huge Arrested Development fan, I can even hear Lucille derisively referring to G.O.B. as a muppet, and it’s just * chef’s kiss* that Arnett plays a magician in Muppets Haunted Mansion.

There are plenty of other celebrity appearances, but only Darren Criss, Taraji P. Henson, and John Stamos are noteworthy. If anything, the laundry list of other cameos you see in the images here are too brief and fleeting–I had no idea that half of these stars appeared in the special until the credits. It is nice to see Danny Trejo (a personal favorite), Craig Robinson, Pat Sajak, and the late Ed Asner–I just wish each had larger roles.

haunted mansion the muppets

Honestly, the same could be said for the core Muppets crew. There’s relatively little Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Rowlf, Scooter, Animal, or Statler and Waldorf in Muppets Haunted Mansion. Additionally, Pepe the Prawn once again takes on an outsized role–one that I happily would’ve rather seen filled by Rizzo the Rat. However, Pepe is perfectly fine here–much better than many of his other appearances.

With a runtime under an hour, there’s already a lot stuffed into this special, and there’s no good solution for my (very minor) complaint about screen time. That is, other than extending Muppets Haunted Mansion to feature length to give both the characters and story a bit of breathing room.

haunted mansion the muppets

Then there are the three new original songs that lend themselves nicely to the Haunted Mansion framework, and feature sly nods to the attraction’s Grim Grinning Ghosts, Beauty and the Beast, and past Muppet numbers. The tunes of these are catchy, but they’re not instant classics a la anything from the Muppet Christmas Carol. (Whether they’re memorable will require repeat viewings–an inevitability–to confirm.)

The nods to Beauty and the Beast (in particular, “Be Our Guest”) is about the closest the Disney+ special gets to synergy–well, if you exclude the core premise of the special, in the first place. And I’d argue that a more direct parody of “Be Our Guest” would’ve actually strengthened that musical number. Regardless, it’s nice to see some restraint here, and this not being a vehicle for gratuitously plugging other Disney+ content.

haunted mansion the muppets

Ultimately, Muppets Haunted Mansion delivers in every meaningful way, and sees the Muppets in their peak form. It’s arguably the strongest Muppets production since the mid-1990s (dethroning another theme park collaboration, “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History” at Magic Kingdom), nailing the style of both its core components.

While not perfect, Muppets Haunted Mansion exceeded our high expectations. There were dozens of ways a Disney+ special bringing together the Muppets and Haunted Mansion could’ve failed, and this fell into none of those pitfalls. It does complete justice to both, with sharp wit, charming characters, and engaging scenes. It’s a new classic that we’ll be revisiting each Halloween, just like we do during the holidays with the Muppet Christmas Carol. At the end of the day, my biggest complaint is that I was left wanting more of Muppets Haunted Mansion–that’s hardly a bad problem to have, and not a way I’ve felt about other recently Muppets endeavors. Muppets Haunted Mansion is an E-Ticket Disney+ special–a fun ride that you won’t want to miss!

We absolutely loved it, and will watch a few more times before Halloween (and probably in years to come). Loved Kim Irvine’s cameo dusting Madame Pigota.

' src=

Being a Muppets and Haunted Mansion fan, I enjoyed it. Rewatching it to catch more of the references has helped. I slso would gave liked to see Rizzo and find Pepe a little meh in general, but he worked for this storyline. The mansion itself looks like Disneyland Paris to me.

' src=

Sorry, Tom, I cannot agree with your review. This show is nowhere near in the same category as Muppets Christmas Carol. As with any musical, the show is only as good as the music, and in this case, the songs were completely forgettable and nowhere near as good as Paul Williams even at his worst. This was a major disappointment for me and one that I will not be revisiting.

' src=

MHM was…cute. Not quite the same as good, but…yeah, cute. I was a big fan of the original series, but this honestly didn’t do a thing for me. It was a lot scarier for little ones than I would have anticipated too. And what is up with Kermit’s voice? I’m finding it hard to believe there is no one anywhere in the universe who could mimic Henson.

' src=

@Corene — you are not the only one! I was totally distracted by Kermit’s voice as well. Not sure if they changed the voice actor all of a sudden or something. Unfortunately this one largely fell flat for me, and I am a big Muppets fan with the aforementioned rose-coloured glasses firmly in place. I didn’t like Will Arnett at all, and found the songs just meh. The celebrity cameos will be dated before long anyway (Tiny Toons, anyone?), so I don’t do a lot of “hey look, it’s HER!” but focus on the Muppets themselves. There were definitely some terrific laugh-out-loud moments, but for over half of it, I was just…underwhelmed.

' src=

Loved the show and all the ride references! I thought the prawn was pretty funny too!

Summary [ ]

Rather than attending the Muppets' annual Halloween party, Gonzo and Pepe are en route to participate in a fear challenge event in the mansion of Gonzo's favorite magician , The Great MacGuffin . Upon being dropped off by their driver (Yvette Nicole Brown), Gonzo and Pepe meet the caretaker (Darren Criss), along with several ghosts and singing busts outside the mansion who perform " Rest In Peace ."

The duo is then greeted by their " Ghost Host " (Will Arnett) who informs them that Gonzo was invited there to see if he can survive one night inside this haunted mansion. And if they cannot, they will be trapped there forever. While Gonzo claims that he is afraid of nothing, Pepe is scared by everything he sees. The two explore the mansion and, after meeting Madame Pigota , Gonzo and Pepe come across a room full of several ghosts resembling their Muppet friends who put on a vaudevillian-esque show entitled The Mansion Show (featuring At the Dance style jokes, the stand up comedy of Gauzey the Hatbox Bear , and a performance of " Life Hereafter "). The host reappears and informs Gonzo that in order to survive his time in the mansion he must face his fears in Room 999 .

As Gonzo is led off to the room, Pepe meets and becomes entranced by the mansion's resident bride Constance Hatchaway (Taraji P. Henson).

With the help of the host's candelabra , Gonzo is able to find Pepe and stop the wedding. The pair jump out the window and make it out of the mansion just as the sun rises. The host meets them outside, revealing himself to be the ghost of the Great MacGuffin, and is impressed that Gonzo was willing to do what he could not - face his fears. The pair are picked up by their driver and head off to meet the rest of their friends for a post-Halloween breakfast, joined by the Hitchhiking Ghosts as "Dancing in the Moonlight" plays on the car's radio and a rainbow appears in the sky.

All the Celebrity Cameos in Disney+ Special ‘Muppets Haunted Mansion’

Fans will recognize more than a few faces in the Halloween spooktacular

Muppets haunted mansion

Halloween is creeping up once again, and that means it’s time for a new round of spooky TV specials. This year, that includes “Muppets Haunted Mansion.” And, like any Muppets movie, it brings in some heavy hitters for the human roles.

Unlike other Muppets projects though, “Muppets Haunted Mansion” isn’t an adaptation of a preexisting book or movie. It’s an adaptation of the classic ride in Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Still, every Muppets movie has some recognizable celebs to bridge the gap. In “The Muppet Christmas Carol” it was Michael Caine, and in “Muppet Treasure Island” it was Tim Curry.

So, here’s all the human faces you’ll recognize in “Muppets Haunted Mansion.”

Will Arnett – The Host

With any haunted mansion, we need a ghost host — and Will Arnett gets to handle that job in this special. Best known for his role in “Arrested Development,” he even gets to introduce himself with the classic line from the Haunted Mansion ride in Disney Parks. But Arnett is more than just our host.

He’s also the Magic Maguffin, Gonzo’s hero in the story. Apparently, Maguffin got trapped in the mansion, but he’s made peace with his fate, and now all the mansion’s residents are his friends.

Yvette Nicole Brown – The Driver

If you’re going to a fancy party, you need to arrive in style. So naturally, Gonzo and Pepe take a limo to the Haunted Mansion. And yes, that limo is driven by Yvette Nicole Brown. She’s arguably best known for her characters on “Community” and “Drake and Josh,” but most recently starred in Disney+’s new series “Big Shot.”

As always, Brown lends humor to the moment, but ominously warns the two muppets that she’s only ever dropped people off at the mansion — never picked them up.

Darren Criss – The Caretaker

There is one non-ghost resident of the Haunted Mansion, though technically, it doesn’t appear he lives inside. He’s the caretaker, and he carves the many tombstones that the Haunted Mansion needs. He’s played by “Glee” alum Darren Criss and yes, he does have an incredible musical number.

Taraji P. Henson – The Bride

Next to the hitchiking ghosts — who do make an appearance in “Muppets Haunted Mansion” — the most recognizable character of the ride is Constance Hatchaway, better known as the Black Widow Bride. Here, she’s played by “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson.

As her name implies, Constance has a murderous history, having killed all of her ex-husbands. In “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” she’s up to her old ways, trying to first marry Pepe, and then kill him.

Ed Asner – Ghost of Claude

The “Muppets Haunted Mansion” special marks one of Ed Asner’s final roles, filmed before he died in August. Asner is of course best known for his time on the Mary Tyler Moore show, but he’s a Disney legend in his own right. He played Carl Fredricksen in Disney and Pixar’s “UP.”

Ed Asner

Asner doesn’t have any lines in “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” but the glass in his hand does fall victim to one of the other ghosts.

Kim Irvine – Haunted Mansion Maid

Fans may not recognize Kim Irvine right away, but she’s actually one of the most important cameos in “Muppet Haunted Mansion.” Irvine is an imagineer who worked closely on the Disney Parks ride of “The Haunted Mansion.”

She also happens to be the daughter of Disney imagineer Leota Toombs — yes, THE Madame Leota. Toombs provided the face of Madame Leota and Little Leota (who she also voiced). Following in her mother’s legacy, Kim Irvine provides the face of the Leota characters for additions like the seasonal Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay.

It’s a meta cameo, and it’s amazing.

Skai Jackson – Singing Bust

What would the Haunted Mansion be without it’s lovable singing busts? Hopefully, we’ll never have to know. The busts do make an appearance in “Muppets Haunted Mansion,” and they do get to sing their earworm “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”

Among the busts is former Disney Channel star Skai Jackson, best known for her role on “Jessie.” Jackson was most recently seen on “Dancing With The Stars” last year.

Geoff Keighley – Singing Bust

Gaming fans should pick out Geoff Keighley pretty easily. He’s perhaps best known as a host on GameTrailers TV, and previously G4tv.com. Keighley is also a freelance writer. He appears as the broken bust during the graveyard’s big song.

Justina Machado – Singing Bust

“One Day At A Time” star Justina Machado also pops on screen ever so briefly as one of the singing busts. It takes some work to recognize the busts on first glance, given the heavy make up their in, but once the credits roll, it becomes a bit clearer.

haunted mansion the muppets

Craig Robinson – Singing Bust

Also among the heads of stone — though ironically, they don’t seem to have actual headstones — is Craig Robinson. The star of “The Office” and “Threat Level Midnight: The Movie” appears toward the end of the row of busts, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo.

Pat Sajak – Singing Bust

“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak rounds out our singing bust crew, appearing smack dab in the middle of the busts gallery. He’s arguably the most recognizable, but like the rest of the busts, he’s only on screen for a few seconds before he disappears.

Jeannie Mai – Ghost of Maude

As Darren Criss’s caretaker runs through the residents of the graveyard, we meet the ghost of Maude, played by “The Real” host Jeannie Mai. Presumably, she died in her sleep after a fire broke out. Criss simply sings that she “never awoke the night her dreams went up in smoke.”

Chrissy Metz – Ghost of Harriet

“This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz is also part of the graveyard crew, playing the operatic ghost, Harriet. According to Criss, she “searched for a tune but never could carry it.” True to form, Metz’s ghost is decked out in full viking opera garb, and even uses her voice to shatter a glass.

Alfonso Ribeiro – Ghost of Fred

Yes, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” star Alfonso Ribeiro is in “Muppets Haunted Mansion” but sadly, no, he doesn’t dance. His character Fred had a particularly rocky death — no literally, a great big rock fell on his head. So he probably won’t be doing “The Carlton” in the afterlife.

haunted mansion the muppets

Danny Trejo – Ghost of Huet

One of the more surprising cameos of “Muppets Haunted Mansion” is the one and only Danny Trejo. Younger fans will recognize him from movies like the “Spy Kids” franchise, but we can’t forget his hits like “Heat” and “Desperado.”

He plays the ghost of Huet, a criminal appears to have died in jail. Criss’s caretaker believes Huet didn’t do it (whatever “it” is) but the ghost leaves us with a wink that might indicate otherwise.

Sasheer Zamata – Ghost of Mary

“SNL” alum Sasheer Zamata also pops in briefly, as the Ghost of Mary. Poor Mary was a scholar, but apparently didn’t realize that licking her pen every time she started writing could be hazardous. She was inevitably poisoned by ink.

John Stamos – Famous Person/Monster

And finally, there’s “Full House” and “Big Shot” star John Stamos.

As Pepe wanders around the mansion looking for all the famous people, he finally finds a room literally labeled “famous people.” In it, he only finds John Stamos — except that he’s not really John Stamos. After a few minutes, he morphs into a monster, meant to terrify Pepe.

“Muppets Haunted Mansion” is now streaming on Disney+.

Who doesn’t love a Halloween special? The Muppets are already holiday staples in a lot of households over the winter holiday season (who didn't grow up on  The Muppets Christmas Carol ?). The colorful crew has a long history of being part of televised holiday celebrations like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Now, the Muppets are branching out to Halloween with a spooky Halloween special titled Muppets Haunted Mansion .

You can watch the special, as well as plenty of other Muppets films and series, on Disney+ .

How can you stream Muppets Haunted Mansion?

You can stream Muppets Haunted Mansion and more on Disney+ . The streaming service is available via an internet connection if you live in Australia, Austria, Canada, the Channel Islands, France, Germany, India, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the U.S. Disney’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform can be accessed from desktop browsers, mobile devices, game consoles, and more.

The platform is constantly releasing new content, such as The Mandalorian, Soul, upcoming series like Star Wars: The Bad Batch , and more.

What will the Muppets Halloween special be about?

The announcement video for Muppets Haunted Mansion (helmed by Gonzo and Pepe the King Prawn) revealed that Muppets Haunted Mansion will be a spooky Halloween surprise for Muppets fans. Only Gonzo and Pepe were in the video, but hopefully all the favorites like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and more will appear. The font in the announcement is similar to the title card of the 2003 film The Haunted Mansion , so it’s likely that the special will follow along with the plot of The Haunted Mansion or take place in a world based on the original Disney ride.

Muppets Haunted Mansion will land on Disney+ this fall, but you can catch Muppets content like The Muppets (2011), Muppets Now (2020), and Muppet Treasure Island (1996), as well as the original The Haunted Mansion film starring Eddie Murphy right now on the platform.
