Underwater superyachts? A CEO is pitching fantastical ships that can go 800 feet down and stay submerged for weeks

  • Austria's Migaloo is offering to build luxury submersible yachts for the ultrarich.
  • It says the M5 would be able to travel 820 feet underwater and stay submerged for a month.
  • Despite the high up-front cost, CEO Christian Gumpold says the firm is in talks with buyers.

Insider Today

Forget megayachts. Forget billionaire basements. If you're unfathomably rich and want a new toy, there's an Austrian company that says it will build you a fully submersible yacht.

And this is no rickety Titan submersible .

The Migaloo M5 concept, the company says, involves a 540-foot base-model superyacht that would travel about 820 feet underwater and stay down there for up to a month.

"The needs of superyacht owners for their vessels are more complex than ever," Migaloo CEO Christian Gumpold told Business Insider, adding: "These wishes do not just include performance, length, or design."

Gumpold said that yacht owners were "looking for privacy, security, and protection for themselves, their guests and their valuables, or for the fulfillment of unique experiences up to scientific desires, as well as for the greatest possible exclusivity."

According to its marketing materials, Migaloo says the vessel's layout and features could be designed around any customer priority, whether that's security, thrill seeking, research, or simply vacation.

The company offers prospective buyers a checklist of options, including LED exterior lighting with a laser show, a helipad, a hot-air balloon, and — for the aspiring Bond villain — an underwater shark-feeding station.

The vessel could feasibly host a wealth of supplemental vehicles, including mini submarines, exploration vehicles, and working boats, it said.

It's envisioned as being able to house up to 20 guests and about 40 staffers.

The Migaloo concept aims to satisfy an increasing desire for privacy and security among the world's richest people.

Related stories

The most expensive megayachts ever sold now run into the half-billion-dollar range or more, with at least three $600 million yachts afloat, owned by various oligarchs and oil-state royalty.

Bobbing about underwater in a Migaloo M5, Elon Musk wouldn't have to worry about a jet-tracking student any longer.

Gumpold told BI he had specialized in yacht design since 2008, and he promised that all the complex arrangements of the Migaloo project — working with shipyards, flag states, and classification societies — would be taken care of by his company.

Much of the marketing material for Migaloo runs to possibilities that sound like science fiction, addressing problems that would either apply only to the ultrarich or which the rest of us would be too dead to care about.

Saying it works with the security company Safe, Migaloo claims it could create a "private submersible fortress," offering protection from electromagnetic pulses, cybercrime, piracy, solar flares, asteroids, and polar shifts.

That's on top of a gamut of features that any megayacht owner might expect, including spas, gyms, a gaming room, a wine cellar, an art gallery, and a panic room.

The cost, however, is the ultimate "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" test.

Gumpold told Fast Company that the price depended on the scope of the client's requests, comparing it to the price tag on large superyachts.

According to Fast Company's estimation, there are only 50 people in the world who could afford to purchase a luxury submergible megayacht.

It remains to be seen if and when any prospective buyers will bite.

Gumpold told BI his company was "still in close contact with several potential owners worldwide" and "very close" to executing the first project steps.

But he didn't elaborate on any concrete steps and wouldn't name any of his prospective clients.

With a turnaround time of about four to seven years, it's also going to be awhile before any of them would take to the seas.

NRA found liable in corruption case as jury says longtime leader Wayne LaPierre should repay $4.3 million

A jury in a lawsuit brought by the New York Attorney General’s Office against the National Rifle Association found Friday that the gun rights group mismanaged charitable funds when it failed to stop top executives — including longtime leader Wayne LaPierre — from diverting millions of dollars for lavish personal trips, no-show contracts and other questionable expenditures.

In its verdict, the jury found LaPierre should pay the powerful gun rights group $4.3 million in damages for mismanagement and misspending charitable funds. The panel also found the group’s former CFO Wilson Phillips should pay back $2 million for breaching his fiduciary duties as an executive.

Shortly after the verdict was read, New York Attorney General Letitia James called the jury’s decision against the powerful National Rifle Association and its top executives, a “major victory” in a post on X .

“In a major victory, my office won our case against the NRA and its senior leadership for years of corruption and greed,” James said. “Wayne LaPierre and a senior executive at the NRA must pay $6.35 million for abusing the system and breaking our laws.”

The verdict is the latest blow against the once impenetrable lobbying juggernaut, which has been weakened in recent years by infighting, allegations of corruption and mismanagement, and plummeting membership.

“A jury verdict in a high-profile New York trial confirms what the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) contended all along – that it was victimized by certain former vendors and ‘insiders’ who abused the trust placed in them,” the NRA said in a statement.

As the verdict was announced, LaPierre sat in the same spot he sat throughout the trial, looking on stoically, with a blank stare and no visible reaction on his face. He did not comment as he was escorted out of the courthouse to an awaiting vehicle.

“We’re two months into 2024 and the NRA has already managed to lose this trial, their longtime leader, and whatever political relevance it had left,” said Nick Suplina, senior vice president of law and policy at Everytown for Gun Safety. “This verdict confirms what we’ve seen in recent elections, in state legislatures, and in the halls of Congress: the gun lobby has never been weaker and the gun safety movement has never been stronger.”

The state attorney general  filed a lawsuit  in 2020 to dissolve the NRA amid allegations the organization violated laws for non-profit groups, committed tax fraud and took millions for personal use.

The jury found LaPierre violated his fiduciary duties from 2014 to 2022 while at the helm of the non-profit. The panel said he caused $5.4 million in damages to the NRA by violating his statutory duties, but he proved he already repaid a little over $1 million to the charity.

The panel also found cause to remove him as executive vice president of the gun rights group. Although he resigned last month, the judge will decide whether to permanently bar him from leading the NRA in an upcoming bench trial.

But the jury did not find him liable for breaking laws against self-dealing when he secured a post-employment contract with the NRA in a package the New York Attorney General’s Office valued at over $17 million, finding it was properly approved in advance by the NRA board.

In the lengthy verdict, jurors determined the NRA improperly entered into some deals that benefited its insiders, including its top executives and board members, without proper board approval or ratification. The improper self-dealing included a post-employment consulting contract with the NRA’s former CFO Wilson Phillips, and hair and makeup expenses for LaPierre’s wife.

Jurors also found the NRA filed false and misleading statements in its annual reports.

In addition, the jury decided the NRA violated whistleblower protection laws by failing to have an appropriate whistleblower policy in place and by failing to investigate whistleblower complaints or retaliating against eight whistleblowers who came forward with concerns.

Jurors found jury the NRA was not liable for only one claim, which asked whether LaPierre’s post-employment contract was an improper transaction. The jury found the New York Attorney General’s Office did not prove the transaction had not received proper approval from the NRA board.

“A parade of NRA witnesses and independent experts established that the NRA was the victim of actions that were pursued in secrecy and not in the interests of the Association – by former vendors and fiduciaries,” the NRA’s counsel William A. Brewer III said in a statement after the verdict.

The jury began deliberations February 16 in a case that spotlights one of the  most powerful lobbying groups  in a nation with  more civilian guns  than people.

Caught ‘with their hands in the cookie jar’

During closing arguments, the attorney general’s office argued the NRA and its top executives engaged in mass corruption and should pay back to the organization millions of dollars spent on personal expenses.

The defendants – the NRA, LaPierre, Philips and general counsel John Frazer – were caught “with their hands in the cookie jar,” Assistant Attorney General Monica Connell said in closing arguments last week.

They denied, deflected and blamed each other for failing to properly administer charitable money and violating non-profit laws in a breach of their fiduciary duties, she said.

“What happens when someone is caught in the act?” Connell asked. “What are they going to do? What does our common sense and life experience tell us they’re going to do?”

“Stopping illegal conduct after you’ve been caught does not make your misconduct disappear,” Connell added.

LaPierre, who last month  stepped down  from his NRA role, citing his health, testified he wasn’t in it for the money. Instead, the expenses were part of an effort to bolster the organization’s reach and importance, he said.

Connell said LaPierre engaged in a long history of corruption by spending money on private planes, cars, five-star hotels, hundreds of thousands of dollars of clothing, million-dollar deals to insiders, and payments to loyal board members.

The NRA paid $600,000 alone on private flights to the Bahamas for LaPierre, and hair and makeup expenses totaled approximately $41,000, according to Connell.

The NRA’s contract with its former advertising firm MMP increased every time LaPierre or his wife spent time on the yacht of the owners of Ackerman McQueen, an MMP entity, she said.

From 2015 through 2022, the NRA paid MMP entities $109 million, and Connell told the jury this amount should be paid in damages split among LaPierre, Philips and Frazer.

“We’re talking about trust of NRA donors” and members who gave hard-earned money to charity, Connell said.

NRA CEO kept group of loyalists, AG says

The hiring and removal of Oliver North, a former NRA president who earlier  testified  for the state, is a clear example of LaPierre’s corruption, Connell said.

LaPierre placed him in the presidential role without approval and offered North a million-dollar contract, later suppressing and ousting him  once North  raised concerns, she told jurors. North first gained national attention as a central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal in the 1980s.

Connell also argued LaPierre kept a group of loyalists in the NRA board who protected, “Wayne’s world.”

In an unusual twist, members of the NRA could benefit from a verdict against former leaders. Connell said no money would be paid to the state.

“This is not a witch hunt,” Connell said. “The attorney general is trying to get money wrongfully taken from the NRA back to the NRA.”

LaPierre’s attorney Kent Correll argued during closing arguments the former CEO “wasn’t interested in building a big pile of money for himself; he wasn’t interested in getting money through a back door at the organization.”

The state had suggested every private flight LaPierre took “was somehow a personal flight,” Correll said. “It wasn’t. It was in the interest of the NRA.”

“The AG doesn’t want you to look at the heroism. They don’t want you to look at the freedom he has fought for. They don’t want you to look at the 4 million members,” he said.

Correll said the New York attorney general set out to destroy the organization and she knew the best way to do that was to get to LaPierre.

“She (Letitia James) wanted to decapitate the organization, and that was for political reasons,” he said.

NRA attorney Sarah Rodgers said the misconduct against the non-profit was concealed from the organization, and the mere fact that damages are payable to the group and not the state “tells you what we need to know” about the case.

“If anything was found where I received an advantage, where I received benefits, I wanted to pay it back in interest, which is what I did,” LaPierre testified.

The NRA’s  recent woes  – the civil case, the organization  filed for bankruptcy  in 2021 following a  protracted leadership fight  that saw the departure of  its longtime chief lobbyist  – have coincided with a decline in its political spending and plummeting membership in recent years.

Mostly nonpartisan for its first 100 years and during that time supportive of some gun control measures, the NRA began to lobby against federal firearm restrictions in the 1970s. It found allies among political conservatives, primarily within the Republican Party.

Still, the NRA’s strength endures within the GOP, whose leaders remain almost wholly aligned with the group’s positions. Observers have said a finding of liability does not mean a corporate death penalty for the NRA.

DOJ Filing: Steve Bannon Is a “Co-Conspirator” in a $1 Billion Fraud Case

Prosecutors identified the former trump adviser as part of a massive criminal conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by chinese tycoon guo wengui..

In a little-noticed court filing earlier this month, federal prosecutors described Steve Bannon as a “co-conspirator” in a massive criminal fraud and racketeering case against a flamboyant, far-right Chinese fugitive, compounding the legal headaches of the former Donald Trump adviser.

FBI agents in March 2023 arrested Guo Wengui, a self-styled anti-Chinese government activist Bannon once advised, charging him and two associates with using a series of fraudulent investment opportunities to defraud thousands of Guo’s supporters in the Chinese diaspora of more than $1 billion.

Guo used the proceeds to fund a lavish lifestyle for himself and his family, including a $3.5 million Ferrari, a $26 million mansion, a $140,000 piano, and two $36,000 mattresses, the Justice Department alleges . Guo, who also goes by the names Miles Guo and Ho Wan Kwok, has pleaded not guilty. He has claimed his prosecution was the result of Chinese government pressure on the Justice Department. Deemed a flight risk, Guo has been denied bail and jailed since his arrest.

Bannon worked as an adviser for Guo from 2017 until at least 2020, helping Guo launch a series of media companies, nonprofits, and other ventures. In June 2020, Guo and Bannon founded a group dubbed the New Federal State of China, which they claimed was a government in waiting preparing to replace the Chinese Communist Party.

Guo paid Bannon at least $1 million and also gave Bannon use of a private plane , a Connecticut home , and a $30 million yacht , where Bannon was living when he was arrested on unrelated federal fraud charges in 2020.

This January, federal prosecutors issued a new indictment of Guo and his co-defendants, which added racketeering conspiracy, or RICO, to the list of charges. That charging document named numerous Guo businesses and organizations, including the New Federal State of China and other entities associated with Bannon, as part of the alleged scheme.

Bannon was not mentioned in the indictments of Guo and his associates and has not been charged in the case. But in an April 9 filing submitted ahead of Guo’s trial, which is scheduled to start next month, prosecutors for the first time said Bannon was part of the alleged criminal conspiracy.

In that document, federal prosecutors argued that during the trial they should be allowed to cite records from a bank in Abu Dhabi, where they allege Guo stashed more than $130 million that he “misappropriated” from investors. Prosecutors contend that in 2020 and early 2021 money in the account was steered to Guo’s family and associates. The motion said the records also include evidence of a “$1 million transfer to a company associated with Steve Bannon, a co-conspirator.”

Attorneys for Guo did not respond to inquiries this week. Nor did Bannon. An attorney representing him, Harlan Protass, declined to comment. A spokesperson for the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, which is prosecuting Guo, also declined to comment.

The federal filing does not elaborate on Bannon’s alleged role in the conspiracy. Former federal prosecutors said that the government’s reference to Bannon as a co-conspirator is likely aimed at ensuring evidence related to the former Trump adviser can be admitted during trial. Out of court statements that would otherwise be barred as hearsay can be used as evidence if they come from an alleged co-conspirator, even if that person is not charged, these lawyers explained.

The Justice Department probably identified Bannon as part of the alleged criminal scheme to ensure prosecutors can use evidence linked to him against Guo, said Joshua Naftalis, a former assistant United States attorney in the Southern District. “Being labeled a co-conspirator is not something anyone is looking for obviously, but it’s tough to say if Southern District will bring charges” against Bannon, Naftalis, said. “It is unlikely they will do it before the main trial.”

Still, the co-conspirator tag is the latest legal problem for Bannon, the onetime Trump 2016 campaign chief who now hosts a popular far-right podcast, War Room . Bannon was convicted in 2022 of contempt of Congress for ignoring a subpoena from the House January 6 committee. His four-month sentence is on hold pending an appeal. Bannon also faces criminal charges in New York for allegedly defrauding donors to a campaign to use private funds to build a wall on along the Mexican border. He has pleaded not guilty in that case and has argued he is a victim of political persecution.

Guo fled China in late 2015, just before he was charged there with a slew of financial crimes, and settled in a spacious apartment in Manhattan. In 2017, he began issuing allegations of corruption and other malfeasance against Chinese Communist Party leaders, winning a wide following among Chinese emigres and the embrace of China hawks like Bannon, who Trump ousted from a White House job in 2017. Bannon helped Guo launch nonprofits supposedly aimed at combating corruption in China, along with for-profit media companies that the men claimed were also part of their anti-CCP crusade.

The fraud case against Guo is based on his efforts to sell shares in some of those companies. This includes a 2020 “private placement” in which Guo offered his fans the chance to buy shares in GTV, a Chinese-language streaming site he launched with Bannon’s help. Prosecutors later charged that Guo defrauded many would-be GTV investors. And the offering was eventually blocked by the SEC, which said it was illegal .

According to prosecutors Guo then “continued to trick followers into sending money” through other supposed investment opportunities. Those included G|Clubs, which marketing materials described as offering “concierge services,” but which Guo also said would allow its members to invest in his other financial ventures at discounted rates. Prosecutors have said club members who paid tens of thousands of dollars to join received “few to no discernable membership benefits.” Instead, Guo and his codefendants “used G|Clubs as a mechanism to continue fraudulent private placement stock offerings” and pocketed the proceeds, prosecutors alleged.

Bannon regularly touted the Guo offerings cited in the prosecution’s case as sound investments, lending his prominence and voice to Guo’s efforts to draw money from his fans. “All these things you see popping off has been such successes really in such a short period of time,” Bannon said in a November 2021 video, referring to various ventures, including GTV, for which Guo was seeking investments.

In addition to public promotion, Bannon also privately advised Guo on the launch of GTV and G|Clubs, audio recordings obtained by Mother Jones show. Prosecutors have alleged that both ventures were central to Guo’s fraud scheme.

While working as a paid consultant for Guo, Bannon in 2020 took part in meetings with Guo and others where the former Breitbart executive and Goldman Sachs banker offered advice on how to sell stock in GTV. On August 2, 2020, Bannon also counseled Guo on how to raise money for GlClubs. Bannon argued that the company could avoid having to comply with “the strictures of securities laws” by pitching itself as selling varied member services, even though, as meeting participants acknowledged, the club would give Guo fans a way to buy shares of his companies.

“All I’m trying to do is get around securities law,” Bannon said during the meeting. By offering memberships “you don’t maybe have to sell securities,” Bannon said later. “You’re selling a service.”

Bannon did not advocate violating the law in this meeting. Rather he urged ways to sidestep SEC regulations on selling stock. He also suggested that Guo advisers should consult securities lawyers before proceeding. And the recording of this meeting does not show that Bannon knew that that G|Clubs would, as prosecutors charge, offer no actual services.

Still, Bannon’s advice for G|Clubs does appear linked to the fraud scheme in which Guo is charged. According to people contacted by investigators, prosecutors, who possess the same recordings of Bannon’s meetings, questioned witnesses about his role in Guo’s financial ventures. Bannon, as prosecutors’ April 9 motion notes, was later paid at least $1 million in funds that were allegedly the product of the prosecuted fraud. The Guo trial is expected to reveal more details on Guo’s financial schemes, and likely will also shed new light on Bannon’s possible role in them.

Britney Spears Calls Sister Jamie Lynn 'Bitch' in Rambling Car Video

Britney Spears Calls Sister Jamie Lynn 'Bitch' in Rambling Car Video

Britney spears is 'completely dysfunctional' and in danger of going broke, britney spears 'completely dysfunctional' in danger of going broke.

Britney Spears is in "serious danger" on both the mental and financial front and is doing way worse than she was under the conservatorship ... sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ.

As for her mental health, our sources say Britney is "completely dysfunctional." Since the conservatorship ended, she has no supervision and, according to sources, has radical mood swings that we're told are "shocking."

We're told she's almost totally isolated and, as it was put to us, dangerously unstable.

We're told the few people who remain in Britney's life say she was doing much better when she was under a conservatorship. As one source said, "She had lots of freedom in the conservatorship and the restrictions were there to protect her. She's not protected anymore."

Our Britney sources are angry at what's happened since the conservatorship ended , saying she's gotten absolutely "no justice" ... and that involves her finances.

We're told Britney has been spending a fortune and is in real danger of going broke. Our sources say she's been going to French Polynesia, staying at The Brando , and spending close to a million dollars each trip between private jets, hotels, staff, etc. She goes every month or 2. We're told she also goes to Hawaii almost monthly by herself, taking a private jet, staying in the Presidential Suite at the Four Seasons, and dropping $350k a trip.

"She cannot afford this. She had $60 million when the conservatorship ended, and she's now where the conservatorship started -- in danger of going broke" ... one source said.

As we reported she's paid north of $4 million to her attorney, Mathew Rosengart .

TMZ broke the story ... Britney has settled with her dad, Jamie Spears , after Rosengart vowed to pursue him for alleged financial misdeeds . We're told Britney did not get a penny from Jamie, in part because everything Jamie did was court-approved.

In fact, Britney ended up agreeing to pay Jamie's legal bills, which total around $2 million. Short story ... she's running out of cash.
