Top five II hero image underway shot

Top Five II: On board the new 61m superyacht from Royal Hakvoort Shipyard

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The latest launch from the newly minted Royal Hakvoort Shipyard, the 61 metre Top Five II is the real deal, says Cecile Gauert

The new Top Five II looks regal and commanding at the end of a long dock at Palm Harbor Marina in West Palm Beach, Florida. I take a minute to admire her profile. Geometric bands of glass with a bluish tinge define the decks within a gleaming white superstructure that rises high above me.

A pleasant symmetry accompanies her substantial heft. Her exterior design is by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design , as is her interior, both tailored to meet the owners’ request for what they describe as “a traditional boat with modern lines”. The main driver for the first yacht Hakvoort has delivered since receiving a Royal warrant marking its 100 years of history, however, was function.

“The focus for the owners was on the interior and on the usability of the boat,” says Paul Costerus, senior yacht designer and project manager for Sinot. In terms of the space, “The most important thing was how many people can you sit on each deck,” he says, as hospitality was foremost on the owners’ minds. “It’s a very big boat for its length, but I think we found a good balance between elegance and usability,” he says.

The owners’ previous yacht, prized on the charter market, was a 48-metre Christensen built in 2005 as Liquidity . They enjoyed it for many years before they started looking for a yard to construct the next Top Five with help from their long-time captain, Johannes Buys, and their broker, Tom Fleming of Moran Yacht & Ship . The Fort Lauderdale-based brokerage firm has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with the Hakvoort shipyard (having worked on the sale and project management of nine Hakvoort yachts to date). The family-owned Dutch company earned the business during an extended vetting process.

Captain Buys says he liked the quality and personal attention the owners’ team received at a yard that only handles one large project at a time. They also had a chance to see one of Hakvoort’s previous builds and were satisfied that the family-owned shipyard produced the type of quality they wanted to achieve and that they would be attentive to their wishes.

Top Five II is a custom yacht from the bottom up. Her lines draw some inspiration from a previous Sinot design for Hakvoort. Still, she is beamier, taller and fundamentally of an entirely new design, starting with the hull by Dutch naval architects Diana Yacht Design .

“It’s a huge boat,” says Albert Hakvoort Jr with a tinge of awe. “I saw an Amels a couple of weeks ago, also 61 metres, and it was, I believe, around 800GT – and we are almost 1,300GT, also on a 61 metre.” Top Five II is only a couple of hundred tonnes more petite than the Dutch shipyard’s 64-metre explorer Scout , delivered in 2019.

Hakvoort subcontracts the hull and superstructure construction and then brings them to its shipyard in Monnickendam to construct the yacht to the highest standards. In this typical Dutch village, visitors can see herrings drying on racks among the ornate gable roofs of centuries-old buildings when it is the season. The shipyard’s owners successfully negotiated rights to raise and extend their sheds – right across the street from their office. However, when Top Five II arrived, they had to do some creative work to fit her under their roof.

All that volume comes with some nice advantages. The side decks are wide and comfortable to walk, but the first wow comes with the lounge on the aft deck. It’s vast and hospitable, with multiple seats well protected from the sun.

A tall and wide cabinet that stretches across the back of a large custom sofa is the perfect spot to set down trays of hors d’oeuvres or glasses. The second wow is the deck height, which carries into the interior. This height and a mostly covered bridge deck topped with an observation lounge largely account for the gross tonnage. “The height on the main and upper deck is 2.3 and 2.4 metres,” Costerus says. The main saloon begins with a lovely foyer set with a bar on the port side. The height allows for terrific view windows, elegantly framed with columns dressed in textured metal, oak, leather and wall lights.

A central bar/television console divides the space visually into an elegant saloon with generously sized sofas and armchairs from a formal dining area with a custom-made 4.3-metre-long table that seats 14 guests. Costerus describes the design as contemporary but also American classic. “The idea was not to focus on trends but to emphasize timeless elegance,” he says.

Shimmering fabrics, sparkling bevelled chandeliers and a few panels with a high-gloss finish add a spark to the muted colours – bronze, silvery greys, natural woods as well as tinted ones – that form the primary palette.

The owners have a wide range of business interests. And it was the lady of the yacht, who is well versed in handling interiors, who worked closely with the interior designer and selected all furnishings. Her husband’s primary input was the large main deck bar, which complements one on the owner’s deck inside the upper deck saloon and an exterior one of the bridge/pool deck.

Again, on the interior, comfort was the guiding principle. Most guest cabins (five of them) are on the main deck, forward of an attractive guest lobby and the glass lift that rises at the heart of a feature staircase. The suite closest to the lift is accessible by wheelchair – something still frustratingly rare enough on yachts to warrant a special mention. “The elegant design of the guest cabins has subtle luxury accessories by Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, and Brunello Cucinelli,” Costerus says. All it takes is opening the door to get a sense of how comfortable each cabin is – the colours are soothing and the lighting inviting.

While the owners intend to use the boat privately, Top Five II will also be available for charter with Worth Avenue Yachts . All cabins have extra-long beds, and several have bathtubs. “It’s great for kids,” observes the captain, and so the yacht caters to all ages.

A sizeable galley – with large windows, neatly organised workspaces and a guest-friendly centre island for casual meals – takes up the balance of the main deck.

The pace is easy-going, the tones relaxing and the details numerous but discreet. I ask the designer about his favourite feature. “I find it a difficult question,” says Costerus. “Architecture-wise, I really like the high windows. I think the layout works very well and I like the private owner’s deck. And as for the interior design, I like the staircase with the full-height handrail, leather panelling and wooden cleaving. It’s difficult to pinpoint one thing,” he says. “It’s the sum of everything that happens on board that makes the design.”

One of Top Five II ’s most pleasant aspects is its consistency, from the attractive wheelhouse to the elegant guest cabins and the owner’s area. The owner’s deck offers privacy and ample space in which to entertain. The panoramic suite with his-and-hers bathrooms – both spectacular but with a bonus for her in the shape of a free-standing tub and feature marble wall – yields to a light-filled saloon with a large bar, television, games table and lounging space. Outside of the sliding glass doors is a private outdoor dining area with room left over for lounge chairs. In addition, the owners have access to a spa pool and a big sunpad on the forward end.

As the aft section of the bridge is designated, the pool deck will likely prove a favourite space. A large bar complements a worktop attached to the glass-sided blue mosaic spa pool. The deck is semi-enclosed but bright, thanks to three large skylights in the ceiling covering a section of the deck, which is also protected from wind and rain by side structures. A classic sauna, redolent of fresh wood, and space for a massage table are in an area off to the side. Best of all, stairs connect the pool deck to a cosy observation lounge, making this area a fabulous outdoor duplex. The owner came up with a neat idea for this observation deck – a table that converts into a gas-fed firepit. The captain has to point it out for me to notice that this is more than just a coffee table. “At first, we were wondering how we could do this regulation-wise, but it’s not a problem,” Costerus says.

Extra entertainment space is on the lower deck, where a comfortable lounge, ideal for movie nights, could be converted to a seventh cabin with a king-size bed and en suite. Also on this deck are the top level of the impeccable engine room, an oversized garage with room for two 7.5-metre tenders, a beach club with fitness equipment, two side platforms for boarding water toys and most of the crew quarters. These were not an afterthought. The owners gave this area a lot of attention, just as they did the guest accommodations. “We looked at material selections to see if it matched the [guest] interior. But I know the [owner’s team] spent a lot of time on and paid a lot of attention to the crew area,” Costerus says. The chief engineer and first officer each have their cabin, and the crew mess was designed for all 19 crew to sit and share a meal.

As is usual on a yacht of this size, the captain’s quarters are on the bridge deck, stretching across the beam and comparable in size to a guest cabin. The adjacent wheelhouse reveals a remarkable confluence of design and technology.

A displacement yacht with a bulbous bow, Top Five II has an ice belt and was optimised to use as little fuel as possible at cruising speed, says Hans-Maarten Bais, co-owner of Diana Yacht Design. Captain Buys says the primary mandates in terms of the yacht’s cruising ability were “global cruising” and “limitless”.

Top Five II , which complies with IMO’s Tier III regulations, can cruise far and wide with a long range of 5,000 nautical miles. She also has a Class 2 Dynamic Positioning System, Total Ride Control by Naiad Dynamics, and the ice belt makes cruising in the northern latitudes – and potential encounters with ice – safer. Also, her bulbous bow contains a FarSounder sonar with a 1,000-metre range and 3D imaging, giving a captain ample notice of potential obstacles ahead.

Diana Yacht Design, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021 and has worked with Hakvoort for 35 years, did many calculations for this hull (up to 40, Bais estimates). This new design is specific to the yacht’s particular attributes, her volume and the large fins of the Total Ride Control system.

The fins work independently or together to mitigate rolling and pitching. Unfortunately for the team, Bais says in jest, the sea trials happened in calm weather. However, as they tested the equipment, he noticed the hull trim and fuel consumption change with various settings. So optimised, they improve guests’ comfort and enhance the yacht’s overall performance. “When you stand next to them, the fins are immense, and the dramatic effect that they have is pretty impressive,” he says.

Covid-19 ensured in-person visits to the yard during construction were limited. However, in addition to detailed and realistic 3D renderings that helped the owners visualise the finished product, the shipyard built full-scale room mock-ups at its top-notch carpentry shop in a nearby town. The owners saw the mock-ups and had real-time visuals of the interior spaces as the construction progressed.

As a result, there were few, if any, surprises when the yacht emerged nearly finished from the shed in April last year. When the boat made it to the US, a few months later, Albert Hakvoort Jr was delighted to hear the owners say she was just like the renderings they’d approved. But one (pleasant) surprise for the experienced builder was how quiet the vessel was. “We didn’t do anything different than we do on other boats. We had no problem, no vibration. During sea trials, we could not tell the engines were on,” he says. Of course, a lot of science goes into calculating things like exhaust pressure and how sound travels, but no matter what, Bais says, there is always a bit of magic that happens.

Comfort, technology, handsomeness, a little magic – Top Five II is the complete package.

The 5 Most Expensive Superyachts in the World

By Brett Berk

Eclipse the private luxury yacht of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich anchors in Fethiye district of Mugla

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available for purchase, the prices of the most expensive superyachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and as such, the global superyacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s über-wealthy think of their superyachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive superyachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to protect privacy or to shield the assets from taxation or seizure. Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive superyachts in the world.

Super yacht Dubai is moored at the Doha Sailin

5. Dubai ($400 million)

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

The 147 meter mega luxury yacht of Manchester City soccer club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan from UAE

4. Topaz ($527 million)

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch, Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built Lürssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

The longest luxury yacht in the world the 180m long 'Azzam' is visible at the Luerssen shipyard

3. Azzam ($600 million)

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by Lürssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

2024 Solar Eclipse: The 13 Best Places to See the Event

One of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Earliest Commissions Lists for $779,000

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real, and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Top 5 superyacht and big boat regattas

Yachting Pages

Yacht racing encompasses everything from the starting point of many an aspiring captain in childhood dinghies right the way through to the Formula One of sailing: The Americas Cup. There really are few sights more exciting than the sheer scale of a fleet of superyachts racing at a regatta.

Big Classics, Spirit of Tradition, J-Classes, Wallys and even sailing superyachts built more for comfort than speed come together at a few key fixtures each year. These regattas demonstrate highly orchestrated crew work, new technologies and star sailors in some of the world’s most beautiful and luxurious superyacht destinations.

Competitive owners excitedly lock horns racing their pride and joy whilst being surrounded by some of the most spectacular backdrops the world has to offer.

To provide them with the best chance of being successful in these prestigious events, they often recruit Olympians and professionals to bolster their regular crew. Designers, riggers and sailmakers are never far away from the action, but ultimately these regattas are special in that they bring together passionate and likeminded yachtsmen/women from all over the world.

Yachting Pages lists the top five superyacht and big boat regattas from across the world in a celebration of competitive sailing.

1. St Barths Bucket Regatta – 17th to 20th March 2022

St Barths Bucket regatta aerial view

It goes without saying that this exclusive regatta has typified the unique spirit of the Buckets since its first edition in 1995, enjoying the stunning backdrop and safe island of St Barthelemy. In recent years up to 40 superyachts have graced the start line.

The regatta itself has an informal charm where owners and professional sailors can race with the spirit of the bucket, and a Corinthian class that provides yacht owners with the chance to compete with their permanent crew as opposed to flying in professionals exemplifies this.

The island and its white sand beaches have attracted many of the international jet set over the years, from Hollywood stars to the Rothschilds and Rockefellers.

With industry support, the Bucket is a unique regatta and a portion of the entry fees are donated to local charities.

2. Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta (Sardinia) – 2022 date TBC (usually early June)

A name widely associated with fashion meets superyachts at the delightful Costa Smeralda – at a yacht club founded in 1967 by H. H. Aga Khan. This probably says it all. The Loro Piana is without doubt one of the most stylish events on the calendar.

Pier Luigi Loro Piana is a highly respected yachtsman, known for his series of My Song sailing superyachts. Great conditions, lavish social events and the most elegant setting makes this a well-supported regatta.

2021 saw the addition of a Multihull Class for the first time.

3. Les Voiles de St-Tropez (South of France) – 24th September to 1st October 2022

Founded by a group of local sailing enthusiast over drinks at Le Club 55 some 40 years ago, La Nioulargue (as it’s often called) is a wonderfully diverse event.

It’s not exclusively for superyachts; here you will see everything from small dayboats through to three-masted schooners, as well all sorts of exotica from Wally and Baltic. J-Classes feature, while the 15-metre class boast some of the most impressive classics.

In 2021 Les Voiles took on a new format: Big boats one week and the classics the other week, to allow for a bit more space. Saint-Tropez also hosted the French leg of the Sail GP during the same month, making it an absolute haven for yacht racing during the month of September.

With breakfast in Senequier, drinks in Le Irish and parties in Le Sube, it’s a truly spectacular week. With many of the more race-optimised boats using large motor yachts as a dormitory vessel, Les Voiles De St Tropez is a real celebration that sums up the best of yachting.

4. Superyacht Cup Palma – 29th June to 2nd July 2022

Nowhere else boasts the density of sailing superyachts, big boat riggers and sail lofts than Palma, so where better to host a superyacht regatta?

The 2022 programme looks to be better than ever as the J-Class association has chosen Palma as one of its key regatta partners for the year due to its great conditions, unique atmosphere and track record of great organisation.

Palma consistently proves a valuable base for many leading sailing and rigging companies so mid-regatta breakages can be easily dealt with. Yachts that race here will often take advantage on the expertise available to have routine works carried out before taking to the water.

5. The Americas Cup

Luna Rossa leading at The America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, 2021

It’s not every year and it’s not for superyachts, but the format of Stadium Racing makes for fantastic viewing, so it’s no surprise that the AC in Bermuda (2017) attracted so many spectating superyachts (it also had a preliminary J-Class regatta, celebrating the racing pedigree of these stunning yachts).

Sadly, COVID made it harder to for the same number of big boats to watch the most recent renewal in the Bay of Islands, Auckland (2021) but there was still a good fleet lining the boundaries.

Who knows where we might see the next Americas Cup contested? As ever it has become political, but Cork, Ireland looks to be a contender.

Whether you’re taking part, a keen spectator or simply in the area at the right time, these events are fantastic spectacles to be a part of. If you haven’t experienced any of them previously, 2022 may be the year to consider it.

Wayfinder charter superyacht

The aptly named Wayfinder —referring to a navigational tool—is a 224-foot aluminum multihull and only the second purpose-built catamaran support vessel in the world. (The first is its sistership Hodor .) Built in 2021 by Astilleros Armon, the vessel is the Spanish yard’s largest delivery to date.

The word on the street, or at least in the yachting community, is that the hardy-looking vessel was commissioned by Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates. Oliver Design, the Spanish studio that penned and outfitted the yacht’s interior, confirmed the unconfirmed owner is “one of the world’s wealthiest individuals.” The 10,800-square-foot interior includes crew and guest cabins, offices, a galley, a mess area, lounges and, like many support vessels these days, an infirmary.

With industrial exterior design and naval architecture by the Australian-based big-cat specialist Incat Crowther, Wayfinder pivots between a transatlantic charter yacht to a dedicated support vessel. Available for charter through Edmiston, its 2024 itinerary includes the Mediterranean, Baltic, Red Sea and Arabian Gulf for summer before heading to the Caribbean for winter.

Power is provided by a pair of MTU 16V engines that drive two Servogear controllable-pitch propellers to deliver a maximum speed of 21 knots. An impressive range of 5,500 nautical miles at 14 knots gives it the ability to do very long, oceangoing voyages.

Here are eight fascinating facts about one of the world’s most capable catamarans.

Upstairs, Downstairs

The upper deck accommodation is designed for charter guests when the boat is a superyacht and staff in support-vessel mode. Eleven en suite cabins, including nine single and two twins, sleep up to 12 guests. Twenty-two staff can be accommodated in the main-deck crew quarters. The yacht’s dedicated crew bring a range of experiences, from Master Mariners and dive instructors to royal yacht chefs and ex-navy engineers—plus a medic.

The yacht’s main deck is dedicated to a crazy selection of six tenders and myriad toys, including four Sea-Doos, a 39-foot Compass limousine that accommodates 16 guests and a 37-foot Munson Beach Lander that seats 17. There’s also an array of personal watercraft, paddleboards, Seabobs, and even an Explorer Icebreaker E-Jetboard. The bonus for serious scuba divers is the abundance of dive gear and even a decompression chamber. But unlike its sistership Hodor , the toy list doesn’t extend to a submersible.

Party Platform

big five superyacht

Wayfinder ’s capacity to welcome up to 200 guests explains its frequent attendance at high society events, such as the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival. It’s another example of how the yacht’s large helipad comes into its own, capable of hosting a formally dressed crowd for drinks and canapes. According to Incat Crowther’s technical manager Dan Mace, that comes courtesy of the vessel’s catamaran hull, which provides 60 percent more deck space and 40 percent more volume capacity than other vessels its size.

Luxury Lounging

big five superyacht

Wayfinder ’s large open aft deck has a commercially registered helipad (meaning it’s also available for charter use) and is used to bring guests on and off the yacht in style. There’s even a dedicated “heli-lounge” where guests can wait for the helicopter transfer. Located forward on the same deck as the helipad, and within easy reach of the yacht’s elevator, the lounge has a modern design.

Technically Gifted

big five superyacht

While the vessel is all about having fun at sea, the helm is packed with a range of technical capabilities, from the integrated bridge to the yacht’s MARSS NiDAR long-range perimeter security and drone-detection system for guest privacy and protection. The catamaran hull is further enhanced by a Praxis dynamic positioning system for keeping the yacht in place at sea. On the inside, the layout is dedicated to service areas, including waste management, laundry, workshops and storage.

Pickleball, Anyone?

big five superyacht

When not being used for guest transfers, the sky-blue helipad conveniently doubles as a full-size pickleball court, with side lounges for guests to watch from the side lines. To prevent balls from flying into the water, a temporary three-sided net wall is erected around the edge of the court. At night, the big heli ‘H’ lights up in neon green.

Seaview Gym

big five superyacht

The beauty of a support vessel is the large amount of space available to carry equipment, toys, and tenders, but it also frees up space for wellness and fitness. On Wayfinder ’s lower deck, the foldout beach club doubles as a well-equipped oceanfront gym for workouts that come with million-dollar views. The gym gear includes an elliptical machine, Nordic spinning bike, weight benches, treadmill, rowing machine, and punching bags. Unlike other yachts with the beach club at the stern, the aft area remains free for swimmers or just relaxing.

Environmentally Active

big five superyacht

Built to the IMO’s latest Tier III emission guidelines, Wayfinder was designed to enhance sustainability. Its onboard treatment plant cleans all wastewater discharged to drinkable quality before being discharged. The yacht’s dry waste is also fully treated to allow the vessel to operate with a zero-discharge policy.

What yachting industry insiders have to say about Jeff Bezos' superyacht

  • Jeff Bezos' yacht , which reportedly cost $500 million to build, completed its first year at sea.
  • The superyacht, Koru, was a frequent topic of conversation at the Palm Beach boat show.
  • Here's what industry insiders think about the vessel.

Insider Today

It's been just about a year since Koru, Jeff Bezos ' $500 million megayacht, set sail from the Oceanco shipyard in the Netherlands, capturing the attention of yachting insiders and land dwellers alike.

Even after her first season at sea, the 127-meter ship is still one of the most talked about vessels among those in the know — and not just for the busty figurehead on its prow, which many have wrongly speculated is based on Bezos's fiancée . Koru was a hot topic at the annual Palm Beach International Boat Show, where the yachts of other billionaires were on display for sale or charter.

The overwhelming response from those Business Insider spoke to was awe, with many praising her unique design, commenting on her immense size, or remarking that they'd been lucky enough to see her up close.

"It's absolutely beautiful," said Federico Rossi, the COO of luxury yachtbuilder Rossinavi.

Still, due to the small size of the industry — and the fact that privacy is paramount in the yachting community — even those who complimented Koru mostly did not want to go on record in order to protect professional relationships.

"That thing's amazing," one such superyacht expert told BI. "It's very well done in terms of craftsmanship."

Unlike many other megayachts, Koru, which media billionaire Barry Diller's Eos inspired, is designed as a sailing yacht. That bucks the current trend of more severe-looking explorer boats — though Koru's 75-meter support vessel Abeona is of a more typical style,

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," the superyacht expert also told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Like most other megayachts, Koru is powered by her engines, which are reportedly innovative in their use of a kinetic energy recovery system. Industry experts, therefore, pointed out that her sails are more for looks than anything else — but that still works in her favor, with many praising her overall aesthetic appeal.

Related stories

"It's stunning," added a captain who has worked on several megayachts. He said he'd seen Koru in St. Barts, a favorite spot of Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez , over the holidays.

"There are definitely uglier boats out there," one yacht architect said. "It's not like it's shaped like his rocket," he jokily added, referring to the phallic design of Blue Origin's New Shephard .

Some, though, think the yacht is a bit excessive — which is saying something in a world where bigger is better and $250 million is a normal amount to spend.

"That's over the top. That's an insanely ridiculous boat," a longtime broker who favors discretion said. It's a "whole big show."

And the expert who praised the yacht's craftsmanship balanced his admiring comments by saying Koru's liberal use of teak — a wood traditionally used for yacht decks — was "bizarre."

The material has gained a bad reputation in the industry in recent years, as it typically comes from Myanmar, a country with a checkered human rights record. Plus, it takes a long time to grow, leading to deforestation.

Many shipyards have now turned to alternatives, like bamboo or plantation-grown teak, in their pushes toward sustainability. Bezos' team did not respond to BI's question about the origin of the deck's wood.

Teak or not, the yachting industry isn't generally known for being all that environmentally friendly — or indeed lowkey, so many who BI talked to didn't buy into the idea that Koru is "too much."

"If this is genuinely Jeff's dream come true, then great," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage Fraser Yachts, said. "I'm genuinely happy for him, and I'm happy for the people who got the opportunity to have employment to work on that."

And Bezos, of course, isn't the only billionaire with a stunning yacht . Billionaires like Jerry Jones and Bernard Arnault have also, at times, turned heads with their boats.

Most recently, insiders have tied Mark Zuckerberg to a 118-meter ship named Launchpad . It's the latest superyacht to capture the yachting world's attention.

So, as she sets sail for her debut summer season, Launchpad may take Koru's place as the main yacht on everyone's radar this year.

David and Victoria Beckham cuddle up before boarding lavish $20 million yacht in Miami

David and Victoria Beckham like big boats and they cannot lie.

The soccer player, 48, and the Spice Girls member, 49, traded in their $6.5 million yacht for another one — a ship valued at $20 million.

The lovebirds and their kids, Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 21, Cruz, 19, and Harper, 12,  were spotted riding on a charter boat to get on their new yacht in Miami on Wednesday.

David Victoria

The fam sported casual looks, with the Beckham patriarch and matriarch both rocking hats and T-shirts.

Their latest yacht is named “Seven” — a reference to Harper’s middle name — and is a  Riva 130 Bellissima boat .

The structure measures 40 meters and 130 feet, and was built in Italy.

The vessel holds five rooms and 10 guests can comfortably fit, with a beach club, Wi-Fi and air conditioning also put on board. According to the Mirror , the lavish yacht boasts a $20 million price tag.

The new luxurious boat was bought by the British footballer in 2022 after staying with longtime friends Elton John and his husband, David Furnish.

An insider told  the Sun  at the time: “David had a look around some yachts in the summer, and decided to treat himself. He helped design the boat himself, and has been incredibly hands-on with everything.”

“It’s not an oligarch-style super-yacht, but it’s still pretty plush by anyone’s standards. He was inspired after holidaying with Elton and David on their boat — and loves life on the water,” the source added.

“There will be an area for the kids to snorkel, and the boat will be a brilliant base for the whole Beckham clan to have magical holidays abroad.”

On Thursday, Victoria posted an Instagram snap of herself tanning aboard the yacht.

She donned a white swimsuit, a black cap from her namesake label and a large diamond rock on her finger.

“Sun protection is everything!! Which is why I can’t get enough of my exclusive VB logo caps. Available now! Kisses xx,” she captioned that photo.

The Beckhams have somewhat called Miami their home for quite some time, as they bought a $24 million apartment several years ago in the area. David is also a co-owner of the Magic City’s MLS team, Inter Miami.

Additionally, the pair own a $40 million townhouse in London — that includes six bedrooms, an indoor pool, a wine cellar, a gym and a nail salon — which they purchased in 2013. The residence is located in the Holland Park area of Kensington, otherwise known as “Millionaire’s Row.”

David and the fashion designer wed in 1999 after meeting at a charity football match two years prior.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

<p>It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.</p>

<p>Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10. A pair of 1,300 hp MAN V8 diesels delivers a six-knot top speed. It is priced from about $15.3 million.

Moscow concert attack: More than 60 reported dead; ISIS claims responsibility

This live blog has ended. For the most recent updates, please click here .

What we know about the Moscow concert attack

  • Men in camouflage broke into a Moscow concert hall and opened fire, shooting an unknown number of people, Russia’s prosecutor general said.
  • The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility but did not provide proof of the claim, which was made on ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.
  • Russia's Investigative Committee said that more than 60 people are dead after the attack at Crocus City Hall. Officials have said more than 100 others were injured.
  • A fire also started inside Crocus City Hall, a large concert venue northwest of central Moscow. Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building and efforts are underway to rescue people from the roof, Russian emergency officials said.
  • Russia officials said they were investigating the attack as a terrorist act.
  • A popular rock band was scheduled to play what appeared to be a sold-out show at the venue, which has a maximum capacity of more than 9,000 people.

Three children among those killed, state media reports

Three children were among the more than 60 people killed in yesterday's attack at Crocus City Hall, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Health.

Officials have warned that the death toll connected to the deadly incident may increase as the investigation continues.

Xi sends condolences to Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday after a deadly shooting at a concert hall near Moscow, saying China opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns terrorist attacks.

China firmly supports the Russian government’s efforts to maintain national security and stability, Xi said, according to CCTV state television.

Moscow bloodshed comes two decades after some of worst attacks in Russia

Phil Helsel

The shooting attacks in Moscow are the latest in a series of deadly terror attacks in the country since the 2000s.

In 2004, militants from Chechnya and elsewhere took hostages at a school in Beslan in southern Russia.

The militants demanded a withdrawal from Chechnya. Hostages were kept in a gymnasium, and 334 died — half of them children — when gunfire and explosions erupted when it was stormed. Hostages’ families were critical of the rescue operation. Russian prosecutors later cleared authorities .

Two years prior, in 2002, Chechen separatists attacked the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and took more than 700 people hostage. Russian forces used gas, and 129 hostages died. The attackers were killed.

More recently, in 2017 a suicide bomber from Kyrgyzstan killed 15 people as well as himself in an attack on a St. Petersburg subway. In 2013, two bombers killed a combined 34 people in attacks on a railway station and a trolleybus in Volgograd.

The group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday at the Crocus City Hall venue.

Putin wishes victims well, deputy prime minister says

President Vladimir Putin is thinking of those injured in today’s attack and thanked doctors, a Russian government official said according to state media.

State media TASS reported that “Putin wished all those injured in the emergency at Crocus City Hall to recover and conveyed his gratitude to the doctors, Golikova said,” referring to Tatiana Golikova deputy prime minister for social policy, labor, health and pension provision.

More than 60 dead, and death toll could grow, Russian agency says

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Saturday that more than 60 people have died in the attack, and warned the number may increase.

smoke fire terror attack

“The bodies of the dead are being examined. It has been previously established that more than 60 people died as a result of the terrorist attack. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase,” according to the Investigative Committee, which is a federal state agency.

Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the security agency FSB are continuing to investigate, the committee said in a statement, and weapons and ammunition have been found.

U.S. warned Russia about planned terrorist attack in Moscow, NSC says

big five superyacht

Monica Alba

The United States shared information about a potential terrorist attack in Moscow with Russia’s government earlier this month, a spokesperson for the National Security Council said.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and said it was monitoring reports that extremists might attack large gatherings in Moscow.

“Earlier this month, the U.S. Government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts — which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia,” NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

Putin recently dismissed ‘provocative’ warning about potential attacks

In remarks that aired three days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of “provocative statements” about potential terror attacks in Russia, and dismissed them.

Putin Russian Election Moscow

“I’ll remind you of recent, let’s say directly, provocative statements of certain official Western structures about potential terror attacks in Russia,” Putin said.

“All of this looks like obvious blackmail and an attempt to intimidate, destabilize our country,” he said before the state security agency FSB.

Putin in those remarks did not specify a country or warning. The U.S. embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds .

“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours,” the U.S. embassy warned.

Guards at concert hall didn't have guns, state news says

The Associated Press

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported.

Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

U.S. had been gathering intelligence that ISIS could attack Russia

big five superyacht

Ken Dilanian

The U.S. had been gathering intelligence for months that ISIS could mount a mass casualty attack in Russia, two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News.

That information led to a March 7 warning issued by the U.S. embassy in Russia about possible extremist attacks, including at concerts, urging people to stay away from large gatherings, one of the officials said.

That official said the claim of responsibility today by ISIS appears to be genuine, though no final assessment had been made about who was responsible.

Some Moscow concertgoers filmed events as they unfolded Friday night, when gunmen opened fire inside a theater and people ran to take cover in fear for their lives.

Witness says gunfire was first thought to be construction noise

A witness to today’s armed attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall told a state news agency that they first mistook the gunfire for sounds of an installation being dismantled.

“First, we started hearing typical loud pops, but it was impossible to understand that they were gunshots. We thought that something was falling, as exhibitions were being dismantled at that moment, and someone seemed to be dropping something large,” Mikhail Semyonov told TASS .

“Then, the bangs were getting more and more frequent. Suddenly, there was a scream, and the bangs started to be heard as bursts. Then it became clear that it was shooting,” he said.

ISIS claims responsibility for attack but does not provide proof

The terror group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack in Moscow.

The group, also known as ISIS, did not provide any proof of its claim, which came from ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.

The group’s members have carried out a number of terror attacks, including the 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Children among the victims, Russia's children commissioner says

Yuliya Talmazan

Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, said children were among the victims of tonight's attack.

"Information about their condition is regularly updated," Lvova-Belova said on Telegram. "Any additional assistance will be provided immediately."

She later told Russia 24 TV channel that at least two children had been injured, including one boy with a gunshot wound.

Earlier, Russian officials released a preliminary casualty toll of at least 40 people dead and more than 100 injured.

France, U.K., Germany condemn attack

Officials from France, the U.K. and Germany were among those who expressed their condolences to the victims of the attack at the Crocus concert hall.

"The images of the terrible attack on innocent people in Crocus City Hall near #Moscow are horrific," Germany's Foreign Office said on X . "The background must be investigated quickly. Our deepest condolences with the families of the victims."

"We condemn the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow," the U.K.'s embassy in Russia said . "This is a terrible tragedy."

Meanwhile, France's foreign ministry called for "full light" to be shed on "these heinous acts."

Public events across Russia called off after attack

Several regional leaders across Russia, including in the annexed Kherson region of Ukraine, have canceled public events this weekend over security considerations after the deadly concert attack in Moscow.

Shortly after the attack, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all sports, cultural and other public events in Moscow this weekend. State news agency TASS also quoted Russia's cultural ministry as saying that mass and entertainment events in federal cultural institutions have been canceled in the coming days.

Zelenskyy adviser speaks out about attack

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser denied that Ukraine was involved in the deadly Crocus concert hall attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall (Moscow Region, Russia),” Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on X. “It makes no sense whatsoever.”

No evidence has emerged to suggest Ukraine may have been involved, but Ukrainian officials may be trying to pre-empt accusations, as some Kremlin hawks have already started pointing at Kyiv.

Asked whether the shooting was at all tied to the war in Ukraine, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said: “There is no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians, were involved in the shooting, but again, this just broke. We’re taking a look at it, but I would disabuse you at this early hour have any connection to Ukraine.”

Videos posted to social media appear to show chaos inside Moscow's Crocus City Hall during and after a terrorist attack.

Some videos include what sound like gunshots and show men with rifles, as concertgoers frantically try to exit the venue.

Jason Abbruzzese

The State Department said that the U.S. Embassy in Moscow is aware of the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall and that U.S. citizens should avoid the area and follow the instructions of local authorities.

"The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for U.S. embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates in Russia," the State Department said in a message posted to its website .

Russian journalist was inside concert venue when gunmen entered

Russian news agency RIA Novosti said on Telegram that one of its reporters was inside the venue when gunmen entered and began shooting concertgoers.

The journalist said that at least three unmasked gunmen in camouflage entered the hall a few minutes before 8 p.m. Moscow time. They shot people point-blank and threw incendiary bombs, according to the journalist.

"Now, as the Russian authorities have stated, all efforts are being devoted to saving people," Zakharova said. "The entire world community is obliged to condemn this monstrous crime!"
