Lake Nillahcootie
Lake Nillahcootie is a beautiful man-made lake situated in the heart of Victoria’s picturesque high country. The lake was created in the 1960s by the construction of a dam on the Broken River, and is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and camping.
The lake is surrounded by stunning scenery, including rolling hills, lush forests, and a variety of native wildlife. Visitors to the lake can enjoy a range of activities, including swimming, water skiing, kayaking, and sailing, or simply relax on the lake’s tranquil shores and take in the natural beauty of the area.
For those looking to spend more time at the lake, there are a number of camping and picnic areas available, as well as a range of amenities, including BBQ facilities, playgrounds, and boat ramps. There are also several nearby towns and attractions, making Lake Nillahcootie the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area.
Overall, Lake Nillahcootie is a beautiful and scenic destination that offers visitors a range of outdoor activities, stunning natural beauty, and a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you are a nature lover, an adventure seeker, or simply looking for a tranquil escape, Lake Nillahcootie is well worth a visit.
Lake Nillahcootie is located 235km northeast of Melbourne CBD and 36km south of the Victorian township of Benalla. The lake was formed after building a dam across the Broken River near the township of Mansfield. The lake is popular for swimming, boating and fishing and the foreshore has picnic facilities. The picnic and boating areas are open to public from 8am to sunset daily. Mount Samaria State Park is located south of Lake Nillahcootie.
The Goulburn Murray Water website states that the name Nillahcootie has come from an Indian language which means ‘Blue house’. Goulburn Murray Water is responsible for the maintenance of Nillahcootie dam and boating and recreational activities around the water. It is also the largest inland boating authority in Victoria. The water at the lake is used for irrigation, domestic, stock, and urban water supply requirements. Lake has a storing capacity of 40,400 megalitres.
Lake Nillahcootie is stocked regularly with fish for anglers and Golden Perch, Murray Cod and Redfin are popular catches here. This remains a popular location for water skiing, canoeing, sailing, kayaking or jet skiing. Boats can be launched from the main boat ramp near the dam wall. This is the only storage at Broken River and has a catchment area of approximately 422 square kilometres. The Nillahcootie dam which is an earth and rockfill embarkment is 34metres high and has two spillways. One is an Ogee Crested concrete spillway and the other an uncontrolled fuse plug spillway.
The Broken River rises in the Wellington-Tolmie highlands and flows in a westerly direction to Lake Nillahcootie. From Nillahcootie it flows north to Benalla and then west again, and finally joins Goulburn River near Shepparton. The Nillahcootie dam across Broken River was built in 1967.
Since 1901, many public representations were made to the Government requesting to build a weir across Broken River at Nillahcootie for irrigation purposes. The Government of Victoria showed interest in building one and many studies were undertaken but nothing happened until the 1960s.
The public desperation is evident from the newspaper reports of those years for the project not kicking off. On 18 th July 1919, ‘Benalla Standard’ published a poem with the authors initial of C.E.K
NILLAHC00TIE
GREATEST OF THESE IS WATER.
Can you wait a little moment?
Have you got the time to spare?
To listen to my story –
Of the Nillahcootie weir?
The mighty drought lay on us,
Sun shining red and blood,
When Peacock and his party
At Nillahcootie stood.
And one and all said, ‘That’s the place,
No better I declare,
Was ever made by nature
For fixing up a weir.
The need is overwhelming,
The drought is far and near,
There’s ample room you may assume
For water storage here.’
Then spoke our worthy doctor,
‘You see, Sir Alec great,
It’s just for want of water
Benalla’s in this state.
So just you put the concrete in
And make a doughty weir,
Then you will be the finest bird
That ever struct’d here.’
‘Oh, not so first,’ Sir Alec said,
‘ It can’t be done like that.
‘Tis you, yourselves, the rate most pay,
So there you have it pat.’
Then off to bed we went quite late
And in the heat did stew,
While Peacock and his party
Went back to draw their screw.
And drawing it they still are at,
Without a blooming care,
If not, a single tap is done
To Nillahcootie Weir
In 1950 Victorian Minister for Water Supply H.E.Bolt, maintained that his Government’s priority was for big projects and Nillahcootie project is 15 to 20 years off. In 1963, State Parliamentary Public Works Committee has recommended a storage reservoir to be built at the Nillahcootie B site. The committee also recommended the Winton Swamp be developed as a storage. In 1967, after nearly 70 years of agitation, the dam was finally built creating Lake Nillahcootie.

We leave our readers with another poem appeared in ‘’Tungamah and Lake Rowan Express and St. James Gazette’’ on 19 th November 1914 titled, ‘’The Nillahcootie Weir’’ by the same author C.E.K
I had a dream, a dream lust night,
A dream beyond compare.
I dreamed the Government had built
The Nillahcootie weir.
I saw the channels running full
In driest time of year,
And yet abundance was their still
In Nillahcootie weir.
Orchards stood out in verdant green,
And lucerne far and near,
And cattle sleek as eels in mud
Through Nillahcootie weir.
Cases of fruit were piled up high
On railway sidings near,
And engines puffed the steam of strength
From Nillahcootie weir.
People were flocking to the place,
And land was very dear.
All this and morE were brought about
By Nillahcootie weir.
And then I woke! Oh, what a Bell!
It made me feel quite queer.
For not a blessed tap was done
To Nillahcootie weir.
Oh, what a crime! a shameful sin!
To pass year after year,
In wasting what might wealth become,
With Nillahcootie weir.
We spend our money, shed our blood,
To keep our Empire clear.
But works of peace are left to drift
Like Nillahcootie weir.
Unfortunately, they waited another 50 years to see their dreams come true.

Nearby townships of Mansfield and Benalla have petrol stations, accommodation and restaurants.
Fishing Lake Nillahcootie
At Lake Nillahcootie you can target
- Golden perch ( Yellow Belly )
This is a brilliant location for catching golden perch ( yellow belly ), redfin and cod. Well back in the 1990s, there was an effort to stock the system with Murray Cod, those plans were somewhat unsuccessful and again in the early 2000s VFA started stocking the lake with Golden Perch. Once the water level was stable the stocking programs slowly started to succeed. Over the past 20 years, lake nillahcootie has received almost 250,000 stocked fish mainly natives. With a tremendous volume of Golden Perch and Murray Cod. You can see below the recent stocking here in 2021 and 2022 alone.
Today access to the lake is excellent for boats as it’s a prime location to fish with a kayak or small boat and has plenty of productive areas for land-based anglers. There isn’t much structure in the lake so keep an active eye on your sounder as you move around schooling fish, especially yellowbelly and redfin which can be caught here in good numbers primarily in Spring and Summer, especially on evenings. Redfin and carp can be caught in big numbers when the water conditions are right. In general, the fishing is excellent although the vast majority of redfin caught are quite small.
One of the most effective ways to catch perch in Lake Nillahcootie is trolling lures such as lipless cranks, mid-diving hard body lures and vibes at the back of your boat or kayak. Electric motors work great for this and the reduced noise will help increase catch rates. Generally, we are trolling with 2 rods out the back motoring along between 2.5 and 3.5 kilometres. You can also catch plenty in the right conditions drifting and tee bagging the same lures up and down slowly. Once you get some catches you can choose to anchor and fish that isolated areas as golden perch and redfin tend to school up in good numbers.
Fishing for land-based anglers is also very good with many spots around the lake where you can pull up a chair and rod holders. Using simple baits such as yabbies and scrub worms will account for many redfin, golden perch and carp especially during the warmer months. You will be kept busy with the large volume of carp that stay around the shallows.

Targeting Yellowbelly at Lake Nillahcootie
Yellow belly AKA Golden Perch is a beautiful freshwater fish found in this system. With a rich food source available the yellowbelly here grow too thick and plump sizes. Good lure choices include curl tail soft plastics with the zman 2.5-inch grubz and Gulp 3-inch grub minnow both in black are standout choices. Soft vibes such as the Zerek fish trap, Jackall transams and Samaki vibelicious are great options. lip-less crank-baits such as Jackall TN50 and TN60 continue to be very popular so do blades such as the eco gear ZX40 with stinger hooks. Other favourites are the reliable stump jumpers, spinnerbaits, bassman spinners, large grub style soft plastics in dark colours.
Soft plastics are worked best on a 1/8 or 1/4 jig head slow-rolled along with any structure. This works particularly well when tying your boat or kayak up against trees and working the soft plastic slowly up against the tree and adding some noise to the action by tapping the butt of your rod or by hitting the jig head into the timber. This brings out the predatory nature of the yellowbelly. Take advantage of down scan and side scan technologies on your sounder and spend some time moving between the structure to find the fish. Other lures to can be worked amongst the timber but in general work really well in open water being slow-rolled or trolled. When it comes to rod selection we generally use a light spin rod around 7 foot in length in 1-4, 2-4 or 3-5 kilo class paired with a 1000, 2000 or 2500 size reel. Spooled with 8-12 pound braid and an equivalent fluorocarbon leader.
Baitcaster rods and reels are a very popular choice when targeting yellowbelly. Good options include a 3-5 or 4-6 bait caster with a 2000 bait caster reel. When bait fishing a 7 foot light rod paired with a 3000 size reel. Good bait rigs would include a paternoster rig with a small sinker at the bottom or a running sinker rig with scrub worms or yabbies.
Targeting Murray Cod at Lake Nillahcootie
Murray Cod is Australia’s largest freshwater fish that grows to impressive sizes. Cod are ambush predators that love the cover of structure so make sure you concentrate your efforts on any visible structure including logs and submerged trees. They will also seek shelter in deeper holes and rock ledges. Cod are most active in low light conditions such as sunrise and sundown. A medium to heavy bait caster rod is ideal when targeting cod. This might be a stiff 6-foot rods in 6-10 kilo class matched with a suitable size bait caster reel spooled with 20lb to 30lb braid and 30lb to 40lb leader. Good lure options for Murray Cod include hard body lures, surface lures, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, shads, lipless crankbaits, paddle tail and curtail soft plastics. These should be worked slowly or tolled from your boat or kayak if access is permitted. There are some amazing surface lures on the market these days including imitation mice, frogs, ducks, and snakes with realistic action that are fun to target cod with. Bait anglers can target Murray cod with live yabbies and worms.
Targeting Redfin at Lake Nillahcootie
We recommend targeting redfin with a light spin outfit. This will make the experience more enjoyable and improve your catch rates. A 1-3 or 2-4 kilo fishing rod coupled with a 2000, 2500 or 3000 reel spooled with 4-8-pound braid and equivalent fluorocarbon leader should be perfect. Redfin respond really well to lures and soft plastics so do check our guide on the best lures for catching Redfin When using soft plastics, we highly recommend curl tails, minnow imitations, and paddle tails in both natural and bright colours. Rigged with a jig head that’s 1/8 through to 1/20 in weight. The most effective way to use these is to cast towards visible structure and slow roll the soft plastic with lifts and pauses for the retrieve.
Shallow diving hard body lures, blades and vibes are also very effective in this system. So are traditional spinners and Tassie devils in bright colours. Metal spoons also play a role allowing you to cast great distances and targeting the bigger size reddies. Just remember they are quite heavy and very prone to snags in small inland systems like this one.
Lake Eppalock Lake Nillahcootie
There is a large volume of carp here. Carp are however fun to catch and you can learn more about catching carp have a read our detailed guide to carp fishing around Victoria . When targeting carp standard baits such as corn, bread, and maggots work great for carp here. Using a simple running sinker rig with a pea-size sinker works great in this area. So, do suspend baits using a float. We have also fished well using unweighted baits. You can also target carp with hard body lures and soft plastics. This is a difficult technique that generally requires sight casting. This means spotting a nearby carp and casting right in there and working the lure of plastic slowly hoping they will strike. It’s tough but very rewarding when you catch a carp using this method. Most however will stick to targeting them with bait.
For rod selection, a 3-5 kilo rod coupled with a 4000 size reel is very suitable. You could even fish a little heavier with rods designed for snapper that are generally 4-7 kilo 7 foot in length. For fun, I have caught some monster-size carp using 2-4 kilo rod and 6-pound braid. But I am prepared to lose some good fish in the process. We like to target carp on sundown, particularly in the warmer months. This is often when you see carp swimming along the edges or jumping out of the water around September-November which is their spawning season. European carp must not be returned to the water. Always carry your Victorian fishing license.
A simple yet effective fishing rig here is to thread a small running sinker through the mainline shown in blue, which is usually around 8 pounds. Then tie a medium swivel to the end allowing the sinker to run up the mainline freely. Then tie on the other end of the swivel 50cm of 8-pound fluorocarbon leader (the leader is shown in grey ). Finished with a hook. I generally use a size 6 bait keeper hook or size 10 long shank which is perfect for corn kernels or scrub worms, however, you can also use small treble style hooks which is a better setup if you use bread.
If you getting snagged up then you can also use a float rig. Attach a quill or bubble float to your mainline. Thread the line through and adjust the length using a size 6 bait keeper hook or size 10 long shank to keep your bait suspended at a good depth. Ideally cast down breeze which will stop the float from coming back to you. If you’re not getting bites then adjust the line depth and If necessary add a splint shot to add weight.
Always carry your Victorian fishing license, FishingMad encourages ‘catch & release of all native species to help maintain the water quality within the lake however European Carp must not be returned. Access to the Lake foreshore is restricted as most of the land is privately leased. Camping is not permitted around the foreshore of the lake. Picnic and boating areas are open to the public from 8:00 am to sunset daily.

About Lake Nillahcootie
Lake Nillahcootie was constructed to harness the flows of the Broken River to meet irrigation, domestic and stock, and urban water supply requirements.
Lake Nillahcootie is situated on the Broken River in north-eastern Victoria, 36km south of Benalla. The name Nillahcootie is of Indian origin and reputedly means ‘Blue House'.
The storage was built in 1967 by the Rural Water Commission as part of a program to assure water supply in northern Victoria.
Operations
In previous years when Lake Nillahcootie was assured of filling to capacity, water could be released in accordance with a target volume determined for filling Lake Mokoan. This operation optimised water harvesting between the two storages and would normally occur during winter and spring months. With the decommissioning of Lake Mokoan, this is no longer required.
The main spillway at Lake Nillahcootie features a unique Gothic arch-shaped crest that allows the discharge of 117,000 ML/d - equivalent to the volume of an Olympic-size swimming pool passing the spillway every two seconds.
The storage also features a secondary spillway that is operated only during severe floods. It uses the ‘fuse plug' principle, in which a section of earthen embankment within the secondary spillway (the fuse plug) has been designed so that at a predetermined flood level it will be eroded away and increase the discharge through the spillway.

Great atmosphere, my work crowd usually loves a good bar night there. Food is good, typical bar stuff, lighting is perfect and there's a sweet outdoor area.
If you want some of the most delicious food served by some the most beautiful wait staff in Livonia you will not be disappointed between the pretzel bites, quesadillas, and pizza. Trust me when I say the atmosphere here is pretty chill and relaxed. But most importantly ask for Tyler. Out of all the staff she is number.
I was told by my employees to come here for lunch. To say I was surprised is an understatement. It's a hole in the wall bar with pretty good food I must add. Which I was surprised the food was good to be honest. I had a Southwest Philly that was really good and fries I wouldn't say that this place is family friendly though. The staff runs around in very small bikinis and most of them are tattooed up. There were a totally of two female patrons in the establishment while I was there. The staff is very friendly and the place is full of locals. If I was out with the guys this might be a place we would go. Definitely not a place for a first date, unless she's into that kind of thing.
Fun place on the water. I would say better than average pub fare. Burgers are good. Beware if you're gonna bring your family, the girls wear very small bikinis and every not and then lingerie. But if you're just going to go grab a drink, then what better place to be!!
Best place for pizza hands down!!! Was disappointed to hear they had a fire and the wood burning pizza was affected. Being waiting quite awhile to have pizza and so glad it is up and running!!! Plus girls are very friendly and customer service is always top notch. Definitely be back for pizza and future visits!!!
Dingy, dirty, food average at best. But if you go here you already know what you are getting into. I like it. :)
Literally everyone on yelp in an asshole. This place is sweet. It's your average bar and grill with good looking girls in bikinis. If that's not your vibe then don't fucking go. 10/10 place if you know what your setting is. Don't walk in with your food critic attitude and khakis on expecting it to be for you. Know your people.
A Livonia staple...albeit dated. The first sentiment they came to my head is the old adage "just Because it comes in your size, doesn't mean you should wear it" (pertaining to the wait staff), but then again this place is frequented by many, that would also frequent "Bogarts" on Michigan Ave. Nevertheless, you can expect mediocre service, and run of the mill, artery clogging bar food. The scenery is ok, until you remember your looking at a tributary of the Rouge River!! . Other than the occassional parking lot fist fight, the crowd is mostly desperate guys looking to score a date with the wait staff that likely comes from one of the many local Westland apartment complexes. Lastly, the pizza is worthwhile.
Friends took me to this place to end our night. When they mentioned it, I thought it was a completely different place. What I was thinking of was this nice little bar with a full drink menu and wine and food. This was a completely different experience. HaHaHa! First of all, this is a bikini bar. I honestly didn't know this was a thing until a couple of years ago when one of my buddies took me to a different one on Livonia. Oddly enough, doing a quick Yelp! search showed that Livonia has three of them. Weird. Anyway, our waitress was nice and didn't seem to bothered by five loud guys telling ridiculous tales of our youth fighting dragons. This is absolutely a dive bar. Don't expect anything more, buuuuuut they had a surprisingly lengthy draft beer list. While the selections probably wouldn't make mustachioed snob thrilled, it is extensive enough that people who actually just like beer will enjoy. My one friend and I split the nachos and it was actually really good. The chips were light but balanced and the toppings were generously covering the chips. I went in with minimal expectations and left having a great impression. I love when I'm surprised like this.
Very casual and chill atmosphere, good spot if you just wanna have a few beers with friends. In the summer you can sit on the outdoor deck by the water. Service varies every time. Usually the waitresses are really nice. If you don't already know the girls are all half-dressed. It's a bikini bar. I recommend getting the Appetizer Tray. It has 2 jumbo jalapeño & cheese stuffed soft pretzels, 1 lb of chicken wings, battered & fried shrimp, mini beef & cheese tacos, & onion rings. Talk about cheat day!

Lake Nillahcootie is a lovely spot. There is a boat ramp and ample parking. There are plenty of picnic tables scattered around the reserve. The toilet are reasonable clean. The name Nillahcootie is of Indian origin and reputedly means 'Blue House'. The dead trees out of the lake gives the lake a sculptural look.
The mountains on all sides of the lake provide a stunning back drop. There is a small inlet filled with dead trees and rocks under the highway bridge, a few hundred meters from the boat ramp. It provides more interest and looks like a gallery of wooden sculptures. After the side trip, I made for the far end of the lake, some 5 or 6 kilometers away.
