New 45m superyacht Aria SF catches fire in Spain

Aria SF: 45m superyacht sinks following fire in Ibiza

The 45 metre ISA motor yacht Aria SF has sunk off the coast of Cap Martinet, Ibiza, following a devastating fire that ripped through the yacht on August 11 in the waters of Formentera.

After several hours of tackling the blaze, the still-smouldering vessel was towed away from the busy waters of Formentera towards Ibiza, but it was deemed too dangerous for it to enter the port.

Aria SF remained in the waters of Cap Martinet until August 14 when she sunk. She is currently lying at a depth of around 12 metres.

In a statement made to a local media outlet, Miguel Chicón, a spokesperson for Salvamento Marítimo (Maritime Salvage) commended the efforts of the salvage vessel which towed Aria SF to its current resting place.

"It has been a very expensive job and the effort of the staff of the Guardamar Concepción Arenal has been impressive," he said, adding that no injuries or contamination has been reported.

The fire broke out while the yacht was on her maiden season in the Mediterranean. According to local news reports, the Spanish Coast Guard received a distress call at 5pm local time and sent two rescue boats to offer assistance to the vessel and its crew.

The yacht's nine guests and seven crewmembers evacuated the vessel safely, but initial attempts to contain the fire were unsuccessful. She remained ablaze for more than 24 hours.

Aria SF was sold in March 2019 as the first hull in a new GT45 series of superyachts by Italian shipyard ISA Yachts. She left the shipyard only last month and was due to make her world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

Prior to the sinking, the salvage vessel which towed Aria SF remained by her side for several hours at Cap Martinet. According to local media, the vessel withdrew from the area on Saturday August 13 and the salvage operation will now be handled by the owner.

The salvage operation is expected to get underway in the coming weeks. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Fire on the Aria SF

New £20m superyacht destroyed by fire weeks after delivery to owner

Crew and passengers escape after Aria SF catches fire while anchored off Spanish island of Formentera

A brand-new £20m superyacht has been destroyed by fire in the Balearics weeks after it was delivered to its multimillionaire owner, the Italian car industry boss Paolo Scudieri.

The 43.7-metre Aria SF caught fire on Thursday afternoon while anchored at Cala Saona, on the west coast of Formentera, according to Salvamento Marítimo , the Spanish sea search and rescue agency.

Seven crew members and nine passengers on the ship were unharmed and evacuated to other boats nearby, but the Aria is thought to be unsalvageable. The cause and origin of the fire are as yet unknown. The yacht will be towed to Ibiza later on Friday.

The 150ft vessel caught fire yesterday afternoon in Cala Saona.

The yacht, which had a gym and a pool and could accommodate up to 10 guests across five staterooms, was delivered to Scudieri late last month .

Scudieri’s suite on the main deck included a private lounge with a skylight, a terrace and direct access to an outdoor lounge via a private staircase.

The yacht, made by the Italian firm ISA, was due to make her debut at the Monaco yacht show in September.

Scudieri, the president of Adler-Hp Pelzer Group, an automotive parts supplier, is estimated to have built up a $500m fortune. He owns a Ferrari that he races in the Ferrari Challenge , a race series for Ferrari owners.

In May a superyacht estimated to be worth £6m sank while it was moored in a marina in Torbay , south-west England, after firefighters battled to extinguish a fire onboard.

Spectacular video captured a yacht belonging to a professional poker player nicknamed “The Lion” going up in flames off a Spanish island in the Mediterranean.

Twelve passengers and five crew members escaped from the 88-foot Irmao before it was consumed by flames late Saturday while anchored in Cavall d’en Borràs, to the north of Formentera in the Balearics, according to the Times of London .

A 39-year-old Spanish crew member was treated at a local hospital for burns, according to reports.

The vessel was reportedly owned by Diego Gómez González, 34, a professional poker player known as “The Lion,” though it was unclear if he was aboard at the time.

The Spanish coast guard posted footage of the yacht being towed while on fire. It could not be saved and sank near a natural landmark called Punta de Sa Pedrera.

Yacht burning off the coast of a Spanish island

“Our center in the Majorcan capital Palma mobilized Acrux, which towed the yacht which was on fire, but it sank,” the coast guard said in a statement.

The blaze apparently began in the stern but spread quickly and unleashed a massive column of black smoke that was seen from the neighboring island of Ibiza 12 miles to the north.

Sources told the local Periodico de Ibiza that the yacht was available for rental from a charter company and that it would be the owner’s responsibility to remove it from the depths, according to the UK Times.

Gonzalez, of Madrid, earned his nickname after donning a lion costume to the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague, where he came in fifth, the Sun reported .

His Ibiza-based boat boasted a jacuzzi and included waterskis, paddleboards and snorkeling equipment for its well-heeled guests.

It costs about $58,000 to charter the Irmao in peak summer season, according to the outlet.

No pollution was reported after crews inspected the area of the mishap, officials said.

This is the dramatic moment a 88-foot luxury yacht goes up in flames off the paradise Mediterranean island of Formentera.

Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the blaze take hold as thick black smoke rose high into the sky above the stricken vessel . Five crew and 12 passengers are said to have been on board the yacht but were able to abandon it in time despite the speed with which the fire engulfed the Italian-designed cruiser.

Terrifying video shows the flames roaring through the vessel, which is burnt back to little more than its frame in several places. The fire is thought to have ripped through the vessel in a matter of moments, sending it up in a massive fireball that could be seen from neighbouring Ibiza.

Only one of the crew members, described as a 39-year-old Spaniard who suffered minor burns, needed hospital treatment according to regional emergency response coordinators. The alarm was sounded around 6pm yesterday while the yacht was anchored off Es Cavall d’en Borras beach in the Ses Salines Natural Park.

Spanish coastguards confirmed this afternoon the yacht that went up in flames was called Irmao and it had sunk off a natural landmark called Punta de Sa Pedrera in Formentera. They shared a statement published alongside footage of coastguard vessel Acrux towing the stricken yacht further out to sea before it disappeared under the water.

It read: “Yesterday a fire occurred on board Irmao off of Formentera. Private vessels rescued the 17 people on board. Our centre in the Majorcan capital Palma mobilised Acrux which towed the yacht which was on fire, but it sank.” It was not immediately clear why the blaze had started.

The fine sand beach, one of the best in Formentera off Ibiza where Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days, is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach. The yacht has been named locally as Irmao, which is based in Ibiza and marketed online as being available for “out-of-this-world charter vacations." It sleeps 12 in a VIP cabin, one double cabin and four twin cabins and charters for nearly £40,000 a week in high season.

One unconfirmed local report said the vessel belonged to Spanish poker shark Diego Gomez Gonzales, who also goes by "The Lion", according to Olive Press. Gonzales, 34, earned his nickname after attending the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague dressed in a fully-body lion costume. It's currently unknown if Gonzales was on board at the time or whether it was being rented.

Gonzales was reportedly born in Madrid in 1988 and while growing up he started playing the card game with school pals and members of his family. As he got older he was drawn into the world of online poker before getting a place on the Spanish poker circuit. At the same tournament where he wore the lion suit, he came fifth and scored a whopping £200,000 prize.

The yacht was anchored off one of Formentera's most-stunning beaches. The island itself is one of the Balearics and is situated next to Ibiza. It is host to a number of world-famous bars, including El Tiburon and Beso Beach.

It is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach.

The nationalities of those on board have not yet been made public. Spanish coastguards responded to the emergency by towing the yacht further out to sea and assisting in putting out the flames. Last summer a £20 million superyacht owned by wealthy Italian businessman Paolo Scudieri went up in flames off the coast of Ibiza.

The 150ft vessel Aria SF caught fire on August 11, just a month after being delivered to its multi-millionaire owner. Spanish coastguards sent two rescue boats to the area as the nine passengers and seven crew on board abandoned ship after a Mayday call following a failed attempt to put out the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries. The black smoke the fire caused could be seen as far away as Majorca.

Yacht on fire in Formentera waters sinks off Ibiza's coast

The remains of the ‘Aria SF’ have sunk between 7-7:30pm on Sunday, Salvamento Marítimo has reported, despite a strenuous efforts to prevent it from sinking.

Now, professionals hired by the owner, who took over the smoldering remains of ‘Aria SF ‘ on Saturday, must take care of its refloating , explained Salvamento. In the meantime, they are working on conditioning work to prepare the operation.

Spillage a concern after the fire

The embers of the fire had not been extinguished precisely to avoid unbalancing the vessel with the loads of extinguishing material, and thus increase the likelihood of sinking. However, the structure was badly damaged. With the new situation, the risk of contamination by spillage is of concern, although the vessel remains under close surveillance and the professionals in charge of the structure must keep Salvamento Martítimo informed at all times of the progress of the work.

Ibiza fire – Huge blaze erupts in San Antonio harbour as Brits’ hotels left ‘blacked out by smoke’

HOLIDAYMAKERS were forced to flee after a huge fire - fuelled by flammable waste and exploding gas canisters  - broke out in Ibiza.

Video footage showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky and across the bay at the popular tourist area of San Antonio.

Water could be seen being released onto the fire in the holiday hotspot, Ibiza

Planes and helicopters could be seen swooping over the area dumping water on the flames as firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out about 3.30pm.

DJ-producer Bobby Harvey, who has been DJ-ing at Ibiza Rocks Bar, tweeted: "Ibiza is on fire! Not good!"

One concerned eyewitness, Melanie Baldwin, tweeted this afternoon that there is a “large fire in San Antonio Bay in Ibiza.

“Planes and helicopters are using water to try and [get it under] control. Hope everyone staying closer than us [to the blaze] are safe.”

Terry Lewis, 45, from Manchester, said power was cut to the Monterrey Hotel in San Antonio bay, where he was staying, for over five hours.

"We were about three miles away and we needed to get back to the hotel to get my son's ventilator because he has asthma,” he told the Mirror Online.

"Police had blocked the road off when we were trying to get back to the hotel but we managed to get here through back roads."

Mr Lewis is on holiday with his two sons aged 13 and 11 and he said they were "massively" scared by the fire.

OVER 3 ACRES SCORCHED

The Institut Balear de la Natura (IBANAT) said that as of 6.45pm the fire was "under control", but more than three acres (1.35ha) have been razed.

The Ibizan reported that firefighters were called to a plot of land which contained flammable materials close to Avenida Sant Agusti – where luxury villas are located – also known as the Upper Bay Road.

The blaze spread “very quickly due to the intense heat from the flammable materials and combustible items kept within the plot”, it added.

According to local media reports, two gas canisters exploded, fuelling the blaze.

Roads were closed in the vicinity and neighbouring properties were evacuated for safety.

Three helicopters, two fire planes, fire engines and 26 firefighters tackled the blaze.

A 75-foot-yacht off the coast of Cape Henry in Virginia Beach caught fire, forcing its occupants to jump into the water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Mayday call for "a recreational vessel on fire" came in around 3:30 a.m. Friday, a spokesperson of the U.S. Coast Guard told USA TODAY over the phone.

Motor Vessel Savage, a 75-foot-yacht, was on fire about two miles off the coast of Cape Henry.

Three adults who were on board the vessel jumped into the water and were later rescued by a pilot boat, said U.S.C.G.

"All three were picked up within approximately 10 minutes by pilot boats and no injuries are recorded," said the U.S.C.G.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department, assisting the Coast Guard, towed the boat to Fort Story, a military base on Virginia Beach, where it is still smoldering.

The fire department is fighting the fire from the shore, said the spokesperson, adding that the vessel is against a rock. The U.S.C.G. is also monitoring the situation, with a boat on scene.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said the U.S.C.G.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Three people were rescued after a sailboat caught fire off the coast of Virginia Beach early Friday, a fire official said.

The U.S. Coast Guard asked the Virginia Beach Fire Department’s fire boat crews to help respond to the fire about 3 miles (4.8 km) off the coast of Cape Henry around 3:40 a.m., department spokesperson Barbara Morrison said in an email.

A pilot boat picked up the three adults after they jumped into the water from the 75-foot (22.9-meter) sailboat and they were taken to the nearby Virginia pilot house, Morrison said. EMS checked out the patients and no injuries were reported, she said.
