Yacht Club de Monaco

The yacht club is the symbolic centrepiece of Monaco’s remodelled harbour front. Celebrating the principality’s spectacular coastline and its nautical heritage, its series of deck-like terraces that step up along the harbour to offer unrivalled views out to races at sea, or inland over the course of the renowned Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit. The building is located on an area of reclaimed land, which extends the city’s existing marina eastwards and can accommodate a range of craft, from sailing boats to 100-metre super yachts.

The club is entered via a glazed atrium that frames views out over the harbour to the palace. On the first floor are a clubroom, bar and restaurant. Above is a double-height function space, and above that an apartment for the club secretary and a series of ‘cabins’ for visiting guests. The uppermost floors accommodate a range of event spaces. The observation decks are shaded by retractable fabric screens supported by a mast and booms. The harbour elevations are fully glazed and shaded by louvres, and can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views. Photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea-water cooling systems have all been integrated to ensure the building sets new sustainability standards.

The scheme also introduces shops and other amenities at quay level to animate the harbour. The lower floors accommodate a rowing club and sailing school, whose sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats. Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and nautical society. Bounded on one side by the club’s restaurant terrace and leading on the other side to a new exhibition hall, it complements the sequence of green spaces in this densely populated city and forms a new link in the pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

Grand opening of new building for the Yacht Club de Monaco

Design: Foster + Partners

Opening celebrations were held on Friday at the Yacht Club de Monaco , led by HSH Prince Albert II and attended by Lord Foster and the club’s members. The new building forms the centrepiece of the remodelled harbour – its impressive new social and sporting facilities preserve the club’s heritage and traditions, while reinforcing Monaco as the leading international centre for yachting excellence and further developing the Principality’s thriving yacht industry.

Yacht Club De Monaco

Designed in response to the local climate, the new clubhouse sets high standards for sustainable design – the building is powered by renewable energy and incorporates photovoltaic cells, solar thermal panels and sea water cooling systems to take advantage of the sun and waterfront site. The architecture is a celebration of sailing – its large, deck-like terraces step up along the harbour to offer unrivalled views out to races at sea, as well as views inland over the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit.

Yacht Club De Monaco

The club is entered via a glazed courtyard that frames views out over the harbour to the palace. The first floor, called deck two, features a club room, bar restaurant and swimming pool and is exclusive to YCM members. Above this courtyard is a double-height function space, executive offices and a series of ‘cabins’ for visiting guests. The uppermost floors accommodate a range of event spaces, and the quality in its detailing reflects the high levels of service for which the club is renowned. The fully glazed harbour elevations can be opened up to provide uninterrupted views, while the open air observation decks and cascading terraces are shaded by retractable fabric screens, supported by masts and booms to evoke the image of a ship moored in the harbour.

Yacht Club De Monaco

The yacht club is built on reclaimed land and extends the harbour to the east – the new YCM Marina can accommodate a range of craft, including sailing boats, and has 26 berths for 25-60 metre superyachts. Shops and public spaces animate the harbour level, reinforcing the club’s role as a destination for the whole community, as well as accommodating the Principality’s historic rowing club and the YCM’s sailing school – sliding doors encourage activities to spread out on to the quayside. Designed largely for children, the school provides classrooms, workshops and lofts for small boats.

Yacht Club De Monaco

Inland, there is a landscaped park on the roof of the sailing school and rowing club. Bounded on one side by the club’s restaurant terrace and leading on the other side to a new space for cultural activities, it complements the sequence of green spaces in this densely populated city and forms a new link in the pedestrian route between the quayside and Casino Square.

Yacht Club De Monaco

Lord Foster: “The building is a little like a city in microcosm, with schools, parks, offices, restaurants, a network of interior circulation ‘streets’ and a hierarchy of public and private, social and functional spaces. It is a continuation of Monaco’s dense urban fabric, as well as the Yacht Club’s traditions and will be an important part of civic life. Every child in Monaco learns sailing at some stage during their education and those lessons will be in the new building – as a result, the Yacht Club will become even more rooted, in a public sense, in the Principality and part of its cultural and urban fabric.”

Yacht Club De Monaco

Nigel Dancey, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners: “With all of our projects, our approach to sustainability is to maximise the natural advantages of the local climate, while mitigating its extremes. We have also used locally sourced or recycled materials. Our starting point for the Yacht Club was extensive analysis of the climate and the way that the different spaces are used. Photovoltaic cells and solar thermal panels convert Monaco’s sunshine to energy, while the sea water is used for cooling and the facades can open completely to allow natural ventilation. To provide shade in the summer, there are sail-like canopies – a reference to the nautical traditions that Monaco is famous for.”

The building that houses the Yacht Club de Monaco emulates the shape of classic luxury liners. This masterful work by Pritzker-winner architect Sir Norman Foster —one of the world’s leading names in architecture and design—looks so spectacular that it actually outshines all the vessels moored at the emblematic marina.

Yacht Club de Monaco and Marina.

As we all know, Monaco is identified with the high life: luxury, royalty, the sea, casinos and, of course, the most spectacular yachts. It also boasts one of the most exclusive yacht clubs on the planet: the Yacht Club de Monaco, which opened its doors in 2014. The Club is the epicenter of nautical life in the small Principality and one of the most important in all the Mediterranean for its strategic location and the number of vessels that visit the port on a regular basis.

With a total area of 97,000 square feet, the imposing building has 54,000 square feet of interior space; the rest are semi-covered areas and large terraces plus a series of public spaces for the delight of all members and visitors. Its five floors are connected by the twin aft stairs and an imposing central spiral staircase.

The inviting glass structure offers spectacular views of the marina, harbor, and the Mediterranean. Completing its nautical aesthetic, the fourth level has a retractable canvas roof located on a sort of rigid structure that simulates the boom, which continues to reach the two towering 100-foot tall masts located at the front of the building. The space also boasts 26 docks for larger vessels up to 180 feet long, which make it a formidable and safe harbor for the some of the largest megayachts in the world, which usually spend the summers in the area.

The Yacht Club of Monaco resembles a classic ocean liner.

The Yacht Club de Monaco offers all kinds of luxurious and comfort amenities for its members and visitors, such as restaurants, ballrooms, special event space, public areas and a private club on the first floor. It also has an elegant library with more than 1,600 nautical titles, five guest rooms, gyms and a spectacular pool for a very enjoyable day-visit or a larger stay while sailing the fabled coast of the South of France.

In the surrounding area, there is ample parking for 140 cars. The interior of the building was decorated with delicate elegance and refined touches using Fendi Casa furnishings and materials that evoke luxury liners, such as wood in different textures and shades, polished aluminum and pristine white lacquer. Numerous works of art adorn the halls and the splendid Riva Bar, celebrating the traditional Italian yacht and luxury motorboats manufacturer , is the meeting place for those who enjoy navigation and socializing in one of the most elegant settings in Monaco.

The building is not only beautiful but also modern and environmentally-friendly. It has an elaborate system of photovoltaic panels for electricity generation, as well as a novel and sophisticated cooling system that operates using seawater. Combined, these state-of-the-art resources yield energy savings of 60 percent.   ■

The Yacht Club of Monaco: a prestigious club

The Yacht Club of Monaco is a world-renowned institution located on the French Riviera, in the heart of the Principality of Monaco. Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III, it now has more than 2,500 members from more than 81 countries. The club is best known for its commitment to sailing, its fleet of luxury yachts and its large-scale events.

An iconic building designed by Norman Foster

The architecture of the Yacht Club of Monaco is remarkable. Designed by British architect Norman Foster, it was inaugurated in 2014. The building, 22 meters high, 204 meters long, with 5,000 m² of interior space and 4,000 m² of terraces, is reminiscent of the transatlantic liners of the last century. It is located along the Quai Louis-II, at Port Hercule, and offers breathtaking views of the sea and the Rocher of Monaco. The building was built in compliance with HQE (high environmental quality) standards, limiting the environmental impact during construction and throughout the life of the structure. It is home to two of the Principality's most prestigious institutions: the Nautical Society and the Yacht Club of Monaco.

Elegant interior design

The interior of the Yacht Club of Monaco is just as remarkable as its exterior architecture. The interior spaces were decorated by renowned French decorator Jacques Grange. The club's rooms and terraces look like ship's decks, all made of European oak by local carpenters. The warm tones of wood are found in the interior spaces, creating an atmosphere of both tradition and modernity. The most prestigious areas of the club house – lounges, private areas and guest rooms – are furnished by Fendi Casa. The palette is made of soft pastels and shades of nature, from leather to sand to ivory.

A fleet of luxury yachts

A quarter of the world's 100 largest yachts fly the club's banner, which shows its prestige and fame. The club hosts large-scale sailing events, such as the Rolex Cup, the Monaco Classic Week (a unique gathering in the world of classic sailing and motor yachts, motor boats and 12' dinghies) and the Monaco Yacht Show, an annual international show dedicated to yachting that is held every year at the end of September in the enclosure of the Port Hercule of Monaco. The event, established in 1991, features an exhibition of exceptional yachts afloat as well as exhibition stands on the docks. It is now an iconic event popular with visitors who come to discover an incredible concentration of yachts available for purchase or charter.

Dining and relaxation at the Yacht Club of Monaco

The Yacht Club of Monaco offers its members a wide choice of quality activities and services, for an unforgettable experience. In addition to water activities, the Club also has facilities for dining and relaxing.

The Restaurant 1909, located on the terrace of the Club, offers refined and elegant cuisine. Executive Chef Renato Secchi and his team concoct tasty dishes, based on fresh and local products, to offer an unforgettable culinary experience. The terrace offers stunning views of the marina, for a romantic dinner or a sunny lunch.

The Sunrise, with its 180° panoramic terrace overlooking Port Hercule and the bay, is the ideal place to enjoy a buffet of appetizers and desserts, as well as a dish of the day, during summer lunches. The idyllic setting and tasty cuisine make it a popular place for members.

The Yacht Club de Monaco also has a wellness area to relax. Members can also enjoy the pool and gym equipped with modern machinery to keep fit.

Become a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco: the application and sponsorship process

The Yacht Club of Monaco is a very selective club, reserved for a high-end clientele passionate about sailing and the nautical world. To become a member of the club, it is mandatory to follow a rigorous application and sponsorship process. All candidates must be presented by two sponsors, members of the YCM for more than one year. Once the application file has been completed and signed by the candidate and his two sponsors, it is examined by an admission committee chaired by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, president of the club. If the application is accepted, the official induction of the new member is done at a cocktail party in the presence of all members of the club. The sponsor plays a vital role in the admissions process as they are responsible for the new member they introduce. He must integrate him into the life of the club, introduce him to other members, involve him in the various activities, but also ensure that he adheres to the philosophy and values of the YCM. Only one application per sponsor may be proposed per session, and the Admissions Committee reserves the right to refuse it without notification.

In conclusion, the Yacht Club of Monaco is a world-renowned institution, a true emblem of the Principality. The Club offers a wide range of activities for all ages, from sailing lessons for children to high-level regattas for seasoned competitors. It also offers a unique setting for relaxing, entertaining and dining, with top quality facilities and stunning views of the Bay of Monaco. Inauguration of the new YCM building

At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.

“ Allow me to express a very sincere wish that the Yacht Club de Monaco fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests ”

— Prince Rainier III

To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment. The Yacht Club de Monaco’s philosophy is based on the need to perpetuate but also to pass on a heritage, inherited from our ancestors, to ensure that the Yacht Club remains a lively and progressive place.

The Côte d’Azur meets the shores of Miami Beach at Monaco Yacht Club & Residences , the highly anticipated twelve-story enclave of just thirty-nine luxurious waterfront residences and a private marina slated for completion Fall 2021.

We sat down with Bernardo Fort-Brescia , founding principal of the award-winning international architecture firm, Arquitectonica , to learn more about his design inspiration for the nautically-themed, boutique Bayfront condominium.

At just 12 stories, how did the boutique nature of Monaco Yacht Club & Residences inspire your design?

The scale of the building lends itself to a more exclusive and private living experience. It allowed us to offer discreet arrival to the units, fewer residents per floor, and proximity to the water.

Did it present any unique challenges or opportunities?

The challenge is always how to ensure all units face the water. That is the greatest asset south Florida offers. The broad frontage and favorable ratio of width to depth of the site allow the building to be situated parallel to the water's edge that provides an opportunity for increased sightlines of the dramatic widening of the Intracoastal Waterway offering expansive views of a lagoon-like setting.

Monaco Yacht Club & Residences Mar2021 11

From vision and concept, can you describe your design process from the beginning?

We begin always seeking the perfect layouts. We think of the eventual user and the lifestyle expected of an urban resort like Miami Beach. If I had to define the feel it is best described as relaxed luxury. Another aspect is the connection with nature the spaces needed to flow to the terraces. Because of the amazing weather in Florida, exterior living is an important part of the living experience. Outdoor living is key to relaxed luxury.

What was your design aesthetic for Monaco Yacht Club & Residences ?

We thought the architecture had to have a nautical feeling. We wanted the residents to feel that they were on a luxury yacht because due to the proximity to the water one may not see land from an interior vantage point. Therefore, the idea of a yacht club emerged.

monaco yacht club architect

Where did you draw your design inspiration from?

I have always liked the coastal towns of the Italian Riviera and the sleek romantic designs of the yachts cruising the waterways. Yacht design has an aerodynamic aspect combined with warmth and elegance. This led us to combine white sweeping lines and warm tones that are reminiscent of the finest Italian yachts.

How did you adapt your design philosophy to the project?

Every project is unique to its place, purpose and scale. This project is unique and its low-slung proportions, fluid horizontal lines, soft curved geometries resulted in a design fitting to the time and place. It still falls within our brand of waterfront modernity, but with a twist that makes it fitting for the personality of the program and place.

Now let’s talk about the role that Monaco Yacht Club & Residences’ location in Miami Beach’s coveted MiMo District played on the building design.

How will the building’s design reflect Miami and North Beach?

Miami Beach is a 20th-century resort. Its architecture is decidedly modern and referential to the principles of the early modern masters. Many of its buildings are also inspired in naval architecture and this building continues that tradition, but in a more contemporary way, with more glass, larger terraces, and more organic fluidity of its curves rather than more traditional rigid geometries.

monaco yacht club architect

Are there any design features unique to Miami that were incorporated?

The outdoors identifies Miami’s brand. This building takes that branding seriously by using the roof as a pool deck. That ensures exposure to the sun, the ocean breezes, and long-distance views from a very special vantage point. There is nothing more romantic than panoramic sunset views of the intercoastal and downtown Miami beyond.

How does the architecture reflect the building’s natural surroundings and blend of the outdoors with the interior living?

One of the important aspects of the design is the amount of glass between the living areas and terraces. The indoor-outdoor feeling is key to tropical Florida living, more so if that feeling flows beyond the habitable spaces, into the water and the horizon.

How did the building’s Bayfront location on one of the area’s last remaining waterfront parcels inspire the design?

Life on the water is both calming and invigorating. The opportunity to design on the water’s edge is always an inspiration for any project. There is an abundance of water activity with marinas along the seawalls and docks on both sides of the lagoon. The early morning rowers from the nearby rowing club crews add charm and dynamism to the project.

monaco yacht club architect

Explain how you incorporated the private marina into the project design. How did this amenity influence the overall property design?

The marina is integral to the design idea of the project and is part of the overall composition. The nautical design of the building continues into the actual naval architecture of the moored yachts in the marina along the waterfront of the site allowing the building and the yachts to coexist harmoniously.

Let’s discuss your method for working alongside an interior designer, such as Italian master architect Piero Lissoni on this project. How do your design philosophies complement each other? What do you think the end result will reflect?

We have worked with Piero before. We understand each other. We are both modernists, believers in the power of forms, of geometric purity, of the richness of materials within the boundaries of sophistication. Piero is the ultimate artist when it comes to interior design, his designs work well with our architecture. He blurs the boundaries between architecture and interior design so they appear seamless.

What is special or different about working on a project like MYC? What did you learn?

The beauty of this project is its human scale. Seldom in Miami Beach are there sites with this sense of an enclave for few residents who appreciate clean architectural lines and calm elegant interiors in a one-of-a-kind waterfront setting within the ultimate tropical global city that is Miami Beach.

Monaco Yacht Club and Residences Breaks Ground

The recent resurgence of the North Beach neighborhood is highlighted by the groundbreaking of the Monaco Yacht Club and Residences. Facing Biscayne Bay, the 12-story, 39 unit sits on a 1.1-acre site at 6800 Indian Creek Drive, Miami Beach, Fla.

Scheduled for completion in 2021, the luxury residences designed by Arquitectonica is being developed by Optimum Development USA. The boutique condominium features large wraparound terraces offering an outdoor living environment with panoramic views of the intracoastal waterway, Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline.

Amenities include an activated 5,900 SF rooftop terrace with a pool and Jacuzzi, fitness center and a private 12-slip marina. “Given its location a connection to nature was important when designing the project and because of Florida’s weather, waterfront and outdoor living identify with Miami’s brand and lifestyle,” said Bernardo Fort-Brescia, co-founder of Arquitectonica. “The marina is integral to the design idea of the project and is part of the overall composition. The nautical design of the building continues into the actual naval architecture of the moored yachts in the marina along the waterfront of the site allowing the building and the yachts to coexist harmoniously,” Bernardo added.

The scale of the building lends itself to a more exclusive and private living experience by offering discreet arrival to the individual units and only three residents per floor. The penthouses include private terraces with outdoor kitchens.

Bombardier (TSX:BBD.A) on Monday debuted its new Aviator Lounge at the Monaco Yacht Club, with His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco in attendance for the official ribbon cutting.

Visitors can learn about Bombardier’s aircraft, history and innovations, which were seamlessly integrated into the lounge’s design by Paris-based architect Andrea Mosca, based on Bombardier’s core value of authentic, personal, family-like relationships:

  • The welcome desk, shaped like an aircraft wing, evokes the winglet first used on Learjet aircraft before becoming prevalent across the industry, as well as the company’s Smooth Flex Wing, key to the industry-leading performance of its all-weather Global aircraft.
  • On the ceiling, a lighting feature resembling an engine fan blisk recalls that Bombardier was the first business aviation company to use this engine type, which offers superior performance compared with conventionally bladed engines.
  • Bombardier’s EcoJet research program is also prominently on display, charting the company’s progress towards reducing an aircraft’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent.

Visitors can round off their experience by taking in photographs of Bombardier aircraft by French photographer Guillaume Plisson, a world-renown maritime and yacht photographer, and picking up a copy of the new book, “Bombardier,” published by Assouline, detailing the company’s history from its origins in Valcourt, Quebec, in the 1920s after inventing an early snowmobile, until its current focus on the design, manufacturing and servicing of business jets. The book is complemented by archival photography and new photographs by Plisson, and will be available in June.

Bombardier’s new Monaco facility adds to the company’s growing presence across Europe, including sales offices, service facilities and maintenance stations in major hubs such as London, Paris and Berlin.

Leadership insights

“We are immensely proud to reaffirm our presence in the region with the opening of the magnificent new Aviator Lounge by Bombardier, the first tailor-made space of this kind by any jet manufacturer,” Emmanuel Bornand, Bombardier’s vice president of international sales, said in a statement. “We are honoured to be so firmly anchored within the Monaco Yacht Club , a historic and prestigious institution at the heart of the Principality of Monaco. The Aviator Lounge is a unique meeting place. Thanks to its location, it symbolizes the meeting of the land, the sea and the air. Most importantly, it provides a welcoming place for us to meet with anyone who wants to stop by to learn about Bombardier’s groundbreaking research in sustainability, about the eight decades of innovation that resulted in uncompromising, record-breaking performance of our jets, and our pioneering research into more sustainable ways to fly.”

Bombardier proudly opened the new Aviator Lounge by Bombardier, strategically located at the Monaco Yacht Club. H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco officially inaugurated the Lounge in the company of Pierre Beaudoin, Bombardier’s Chairman of the Board and other Bombardier senior leadership members. The new Lounge will provide a visually stunning, welcoming space for visitors to learn about Bombardier’s aircraft, legacy, and innovations. Guests of this exclusive lounge will be hosted by Bombardier’s regional sales team.

“We are immensely proud to reaffirm our presence in the region with the opening of the magnificent new Aviator Lounge by Bombardier, the first tailor-made space of this kind by any jet manufacturer. We are honoured to be so firmly anchored within the Monaco Yacht Club, a historic and prestigious institution at the heart of the Principality of Monaco,” said Emmanuel Bornand, Vice President of International Sales, Bombardier. “The Aviator Lounge is a unique meeting place.

The Aviator Lounge complements Bombardier’s already strong presence across the globe. In Europe, members of Bombardier’s sales team are strategically located across the continent to be available to clients wherever they are. A broad network of service facilities includes two service centres, in London – Biggin Hill and Berlin, and five Line Maintenance Stations. These include stations at the Nice airport, the second busiest in Europe in terms of business aviation, and at Le Bourget airport in Paris.

An innovative and welcoming design

The Aviator Lounge, which already reflects Bombardier’s new brand identity unveiled only weeks ago, is a design masterpiece. It was conceived by the renowned Paris-based architect Andrea Mosca. Working from a blank canvas, he conceptualized an inviting space that is centered on Bombardier’s core value: the importance of authentic, personal, family-like relationships.

Mosca found ingenious ways to integrate Bombardier’s most important innovations and achievements into the design, both as their symbols and as conversation starters. The welcome desk in the shape of an aircraft wing hints at Bombardier’s legacy of innovation in wing design. It evokes the winglet that was first used on Learjet  aircraft before becoming prevalent in aircraft design. It is also a tribute to Bombardier’s Smooth Flĕx Wing , an engineering marvel behind the legendary smooth flight and uncompromising performance of Bombardier Global  aircraft, which can perform in all types of weather and are the largest to land in airports like Gstaad’s Saanen. A stunning lightning feature resembling an engine fan blisk hangs from the ceiling, a reminder that Bombardier was the first in business aviation to use this advanced engine type.

Bombardier’s EcoJet research platform, through which the company is testing aerodynamic, propulsion and other enhancements with the potential to reduce an aircraft’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50%, is prominently displayed as well. It serves as a symbol of Bombardier’s longstanding dedication and commitment to finding tangible ways to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint.

Stunning photographs of Bombardier aircraft by the renowned French photographer Guillaume Plisson grace the walls and further elevate the space. The images were taken as part of his recent extensive collaboration with Bombardier that resulted in a host of evocative images that add to the company’s new visual identity. This was the first foray into the world of aviation for Plisson, one of the world’s most prominent maritime and yacht photographers.

New Assouline Ultimate book celebrates Bombardier’s heritage

During the inauguration of the Aviator Lounge, guests were also able to see for the first time the brand-new book Bombardier , by the acclaimed publishing house Assouline. The book, an Assouline Ultimate edition, charts Bombardier’s history from its beginnings in Valcourt, Québec (Canada), where the legendary innovator Joseph-Armand Bombardier founded the company in the 1920s after inventing a first snowmobile, until its current evolution as a company focused solely on designing, manufacturing and servicing the world’s best business jets. The deeply researched book is complemented with insights from Laurent Beaudoin, Joseph-Armand Bombardier’s son in law, who helmed the company from 1966 to 2008, and his grandson Pierre Beaudoin, Bombardier’s current Chairman of the Board. Thanks to fascinating archival photography and new visuals by Guillaume Plisson, readers will be treated to a window seat to the fascinating history and legacy of the legendary Canadian business jet company. The book will be on sale from June 2024.
