About Moonrise

A new star has been born into the Feadship firmament with the launch of the 99.95 metre Moonrise , the largest superyacht by waterline length built in the Netherlands to date. Unveiled by the Feadship yard in Makkum, she successfully marries sleek sensual lines with a modern masculine profile. A wide range of elegant details, long hull windows, a glorious grey hull and striking vertical bow add to the elegance of the design by Studio De Voogt.

In addition to her imposing length, Moonrise has a very impressive volume thanks to a 15.50-metre beam. This has generated some fabulous interior space for sixteen people in eight staterooms. There are also exceptionally high-end crew accommodations for up to 32 crew, which are bathed in natural light and designed to ensure a premium standard for those living and working on the yacht. Guests and staff alike will benefit from the huge effort expended on keeping Moonrise exceptionally quiet, eclipsing even Feadship’s legendary standards of noise and vibration attenuation.

Feadship Moonrise

Feadship has taken one giant leap with the launch of its latest megayacht , Moonrise . Unveiled on February 7 , the epic 328-foot vessel is now the biggest to be built by the Dutch shipyard and boasts a ton of star power.

Designed by Studio De Voogt , Moonrise marries sleek lines with a modern masculine profile. She features a striking vertical bow, an elegant grey hull with a glass-clad superstructure and expansive hull windows that reinforce the modern feel of the vessel.

The naval architecture has been optimized to provide maximum levels of comfort and efficiency: Her propeller and appendages have been designed to ensure minimum noise levels, while a streamlined hull and Quantum stabilizers allow her to cut through the seas with ease. Powered by twin MTU engines, Moonrise has a top speed of 19.5 knots and her cruising speed is 16 knots.

Feadship Moonrise

Thanks to her impressive length and 50-foot beam, Moonrise boasts a generous interior. Penned by Rémi Tessier Design , the “sophisticated yet minimalistic” space features high ceilings, flush decks and eight oversized staterooms to accommodate up to 16 people. The luxurious crew quarters can fit up to 32 staff and promise a premium standard of living for those working on the yacht. Of course, she’s also fitted with all the luxury amenities one would expect, including a helipad on the foredeck, a large beach club aft and top-notch gym and wellness areas.

Like every new Feadship vessel, Moonrise champions sustainability: Exhaust gas treatment has been fitted to the main engines, while a heat recovery system installed on the generators allows the jacuzzi water to be warmed up using far less electrical power.

Over the past 70 years, Feadship has been credited with dozens of launches and has grown into an undeniable superyacht powerhouse. Last year, the shipyard launched the 253-foot Syzygy 818 , the 190-foot Najiba and the 305-foot Lady S . And the latest star, Moonrise , with its incredible 328 feet, will clearly carry on that legacy.

San francisco giants | catherine, princess of wales, announces she has cancer, san francisco giants, san francisco giants | larry baer reveals sf giants’ short-term plan to handle brooks-moon’s pa duties, earlier this week the giants ended their 24-year relationship with renel brooks-moon, the team’s pa announcer since it moved downtown from candlestick park.

The Giants took their time filling several key on-field roles heading into this season, and finding a successor for popular longtime public-address announcer Renel Brooks-Moon won’t happen overnight, either.

Larry Baer, the team’s president and chief executive officer, said Thursday the Giants will use a rotation of announcers to start the season and that a search for the second full-time PA announcer in the history of the team’s waterfront ballpark will begin “soon.”

“The process will take time because she is a legend, and is going to be very, very tough shoes to fill,” Baer said when asked about Brooks-Moon during the team’s media open house at Oracle Park. “So in the meantime, we’ll have rotating voices into the immediate future in the PA booth.”

The Giants issued a release Monday that said the team and Brooks-Moon were unable to reach a contract agreement for this season and that “after extensive discussions they mutually and amicably agreed to part ways.” It would have been Brooks-Moon’s 25th season behind the mic.

Baer didn’t reveal any potential interim announcers on Thursday, but Giants fans won’t have to wait very long to see — and hear — who will be first to try to fill Brooks-Moon’s spot.

The Giants conclude the Arizona portion of spring training on Saturday and play host to the A’s on Tuesday night in the exhibition finale for both teams. The Giants open the regular season next Thursday in San Diego and won’t play their home opener until April 5 against the Padres.

Baer noted that the Giants will name the PA booth after Brooks-Moon and plan to honor her during a game sometime this season.

“She’s an icon, she’s been an inspirational voice for generations of players, fans, an ambassador for the Giants,” Baer said.  “Renel is truly a forever Giant and she is a San Francisco Giants icon.”

Baer’s comments at the open house came a day after Brooks-Moon, who has been the Giants’ PA voice since the team moved from Candlestick Park in 2000, thanked her fans and friends and offered words of encouragement to her successor and new Giants manager Bob Melvin in an Instagram post, her first extended public comments since the controversial breakup .

“It was, and always will be, the greatest honor of my life and career to serve as your PAA and community ambassador,” Brooks-Moon wrote, in part.

What time is the solar eclipse? Search your ZIP code for a viewing guide

Get ready for a spectacular show: A total solar eclipse will occur above the U.S. on the afternoon of April 8. Most Americans will be able to see it in some form, but the distance between your location and the path of totality will determine how much of the sun will be covered by the moon. Many places in the U.S. − Rochester, N.Y., Cleveland, and Austin, Texas, to name a few − will see a total eclipse, in which the sun is completely obscured. Other locations will see a partial eclipse. Search for your ZIP code below or select a major city to reveal the time, duration, peak and percentage of the eclipse in your area.

What time is the eclipse? How long will it last? What will it look like?

Can't see our graphics? Click here to reload the page.

When is the eclipse?

On April 8 the moon will travel along the path of totality in North America starting in northern Mexico. The shadow of the moon will pass into Texas a little before 1:30 p.m. local time. It will then cover portions of the Midwest and East Coast and touch southeast Canada before it moves out to sea, according to NASA .

Are free eclipse glasses safe? How can I view the eclipse safely without glasses?

If you buy or are given eclipse glasses, be sure they are made by companies the  American Astronomical Society  and NASA have certified as safe. Eclipse glasses should all have the "ISO" (International Organization for Standardization) icon. The glasses also must have the  ISO reference number 12312-2 .

If you cannot find certified glasses, there are other ways to view the eclipse, including with a shadow box you can make yourself. Whatever you do, don't look at the sun without proper protection.

How does an eclipse work? How often do eclipses occur? Where can I learn more about the science?

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," when observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, confuses animals – nocturnal creatures stir, and bird and insects fall silent.

See what the solar eclipse will look like in your city

April 8 may be your best chance to see a total solar eclipse for two decades.

Scroll to continue

If you could look down on Earth from space during April’s total solar eclipse, you would see the moon cast its shadow on the planet, creating a dark blob that will dart across the land from Mexico into Texas and up toward Maine and Canada.

And if you are lucky enough to be looking up from Earth in the moon’s shadow, you’ll see the sky fall dark, it will get colder and quieter, and for a special three to four minutes, you’ll be able to view the sun’s glowing white corona.

For many people in North America, April 8 is likely to be the best opportunity in their lifetime to experience a total solar eclipse. Most in the contiguous United States, however, will only experience a partial eclipse.

Whether you see a total or partial eclipse all depends on where you are to view the phenomenon.

An estimated 31.5 million people live within the roughly 115-mile wide path of totality that stretches from Mazatlán, Mexico, to Newfoundland, Canada. Inside the path, as the sun, moon and Earth become perfectly aligned, the moon blocks the sun and casts its shadow on Earth. The farther away you are from the center of this path, the less the moon will obscure the sun. People within the contiguous United States who are outside the path will see a partial eclipse.

“During a total eclipse, you’re plunged into the moon’s shadow. You’re in this eerie twilight. You can see bright stars and planets in the sky. And of course, the biggest attraction is you see the sun’s solar corona. You don’t see any of those things in the partial eclipse, even at 99 percent,” said Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist who has experienced 30 total solar eclipses. “It’s the difference between night and day.”

The difference is so enormous, even veteran eclipse viewers often don’t have words that do justice to totality.

“You think you know what you’re going to experience, but you have no idea,” said Kate Russo, an author, psychologist and eclipse chaser who will be seeing her 14th total solar eclipse in April. “I always say it’s like the ineffable,” she added. “Sometimes things happen to us that we just have no words to describe.”

View of a total eclipse

Eagle Pass, TX • Sun will be 100% obscured

View of a partial eclipse

Washington, D.C. • Sun will be 87% obscured

Inside the path, as the moon creeps closer to fully blocking the sun, the temperature drops and the light and wind change. Insects and animals may fall silent. Some birds might return to home to roost. And even though you’re expecting it, Russo said, it’s still so surprising.

“You notice the darkening that’s coming toward you, and that’s really eerie and it puts the hair on the back of your neck,” she said. “It really is quite exciting and thrilling, and you just can’t believe that it’s going to happen.”

The fleeting moments of totality will last anywhere from a few seconds to over four minutes, depending where you are inside the path. Mexico and 12 U.S. states have cities that will get duration times longer than four minutes. The longest totality will be in Torreón, Mexico, and will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds . Compared with other eclipses that typically only last a couple of minutes, that’s quite a long time. In 2017, the longest duration was near Carbondale, Ill., where the eclipse lasted for 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

For one of her books , Russo interviewed first-time eclipse viewers asking how totality made them feel. Their responses aligned with her own experiences: Within totality, the awe, connection and euphoria that people experience leaves them feeling both insignificant and a part of something greater than themselves, Russo said.

“We’re only on this Earth for just a split second of time. And I think these moments actually highlight that for you,” she said. “It puts all our other concerns or problems just into perspective.”

Within totality, there’s a lot to see when you remove your safety glasses. April’s eclipse will coincide with heightened solar activity. As the moon blocks the bright face of the sun, it reveals the sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, and can show plumes of gas, referred to as streamers, escaping into space. These look like bright streaks or feathery rays flowing around the edge of the sun. Prominences, or magnetic loops that glow bright pink or red around the inner atmosphere, will also probably be more visible. Venus and Jupiter can also be seen on either side of the sun.

Outside of totality, the partial eclipse — even a view with 99 percent of the sun obscured — must be viewed safely with a simple viewer or safety glasses . According to Espenak, once you’re out of the path of totality, there’s not a big difference in what you’ll see. “It’s just a thinner slice of the sun that’s visible. It’s only when you make that transformation from the partial eclipse to a total eclipse that you get this dramatic change.”

Patrick Poitevin, an eclipse chaser and astronomer from Derbyshire, England, has experienced 24 total eclipses. Poitevin, who said he’s always looking for a “different” or “extreme” view, will travel to Mazatlán in April. He added that there’s lots to see along the edge or just inside or outside the path of totality using a telescope with a hydrogen-alpha filter. “What a show!” he wrote of an eclipse last year in Kosrae, Micronesia, in which he saw from a mile outside of the path a nearly 360-degree view of the chromosphere, a colored layer of the sun’s atmosphere, just above the solar surface. “Mesmerising,” he added.

While total solar eclipses happen about every 18 months , they are often in remote parts of the world, including the middle of the ocean. By contrast, this eclipse will pass through several densely populated cities. “It’s not that common that you get a total eclipse going through your home country,” Espenak said. “We had the 2017 eclipse, and before that it was 1979. So that was a 38-year gap.”

The next total solar eclipse visible across the contiguous United States won’t be until 2045 and will travel from California through Florida. After that, a 2078 eclipse will pass through nine Southern states.

“If you can’t travel [to totality], still go out and enjoy the partial eclipse,” Russo advises. To view the eclipse in April, she will be heading to Uvalde County, Tex., where she has held workshops and helped local officials with planning. “This is your chance,” she said, “an easy chance to get into the path.”

Espenak, whose work at NASA included eclipse predictions, met his wife, Patricia, during a 1995 eclipse in India. For 25 years, Patricia had struck out on seeing totality — her view was either partial or cloudy. It was only in India where she finally saw totality. The two will be traveling from Arizona to Mazatlán to view April’s eclipse, and Fred will be speaking.

“ I’m excited at every single one. Over a lifetime of seeing these things, I get goose bumps, and there’s that thrill of seeing it every single time,” Espenak said. “No matter how many photographs or videos you look at, it’s nothing like the real McCoy.”

About this story

We created the eclipse animations by interpolating the moon’s path, calculating its trajectory based on the initial, midpoint and final positions during the eclipse.

Eclipse animation data was sourced from the Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses Database by Xavier M. Jubier, which is based on NASA’s eclipse predictions by Fred Espenak. The algorithms used were drawn from “Elements of Solar Eclipses 1951-2200” and “Astronomical Algorithms.” Eclipse track data was obtained from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio.

Eclipse city view animation speeds are not reflective of actual eclipse durations. Half of the city of San Antonio, Texas falls within totality and half falls outside of totality. So depending on where you are inside the city, the sun may not be 100% obscured as it is depicted in the animation.

‘A Day of Exploration’ at the Yacht Club de Monaco

MONACO, March 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — ‘A Day of Exploration’. It is the title of the Environmental Symposium organised by the Yacht Club de Monaco in collaboration with The Explorers Club   of New York. Thisconference took place under the aegis of its ‘Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach and as part of Monaco Ocean Week, organised by the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Monaco Government, in partnership with the Monaco Oceanographic Institute & Scientific Centre of Monaco. Contributions from many famous scientists and explorers such as Nina Lanza, Kathryn Sullivan, Victor Vescovo, Mike Horn, Bertrand Piccard and many more were the highlight of the day. The event was attended by the Prince of Monaco Albert II who said: “The tradition of exploration is so deeply entrenched in the history of our Principality and inherited from my great-grandfather, Prince Albert the 1st, reminds us of the urgent need to safeguard our marine envinronment and give it all the respect and devotion it warrants”.

“Today is a very special day because for the first time we have gathered an exceptional fleet of seven explorer yachts in the YCM Marina and at the same time we received the New York Explorer Club. A large delegation of around 150 people came to visit us here at the Club and to us it’s important to have them here because we need to know more about the Planet, the ocean and their beauty. If you want to protect something, it is fundamental to have a deep knowledge of it”, said the Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

A multidisciplinary, professional society dedicated to the advancement of field research, scientific exploration and resource conservation, the Explorers Club has its the headquarter in New York City with a community of chapters around the world. It has been supporting scientific expeditions of all disciplines, uniting the members in the bonds of good fellowship for more than a century. “The Explorers Club is the leading exploration society in the world. It was founded in 1904. Women joined the club in the 1980s and it’s a really place where people come together”, underlined Richard Wiese, president of the Explorers Club. Notable members include Jane Goodall, Kathryn Sullivan, Jeff Bezos, Walter Cronkite, James Cameron, Sylvia Earle, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, The Apollo 11 crew of Neil Armstrong, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin and Michael Collins, The Mount Everest summit team of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, the first team to descend to the Mariana Trench Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard, the crews of the first expeditions to the North and South Poles.

Discovering as a way to build a better world it’s the common trait of the different experiences shared during the panels held through the day. Nina Lanza, planetary scientist, fulfilled her childhood dream of working on a spaceship. She’s the lead for the ChemCam instrument onboard the NASA Curiosity rover, she’s on the science team for the NASA Perseverance rover and working with a spacecraft which is going to the Moon as well. “I really think that exploration is a leap of imagination. We’re looking for the unknown so we really can’t plan. We do our best to hypothesize what we might discover and we always find new things which I think it’s the most exciting part of my job”, said Lanza.

The symposium was also the occasion to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Bertrand Piccard historic Breitling Orbiter 3 expedition, the first non-stop global circum navigation in a balloon. Piccard has also circumnavigated the world on a solar powered plane,   a 43,000 kilometer flight . “Today I’m not only celebrating an anniversary but also announcing a new project which is a hydrogen powered aeroplane to fly nonstop around the world”, said Piccard. He will be joined in the 2028 project, Climate Impulse, by French engineer and fellow adventurer Raphaël Dinelli, who is supervising design and construction of the aircraft and will navigate the nine-day, non-stop journey around the equator.   Piccard has a message for new generations: “I would tell to young people: stop to rely on habits, certitudes, old beliefs. You have to know that you can achieve what other people think it’s impossible and the main job for an explorer right now is to find new solutions. Solutions exist, they need to be discovered”. The Yacht Club de Monaco continues its programme hosting the 2ndMonaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous to promote sustainable and adaptable solutions for large yachts (over 24 meters). This event organized in collaboration with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, will bring together innovation experts, architects and yachting enthusiast from around the world. The Rendezvous is a unique platform for collaboration and discovery of the smart, sustainable sustainable technologies shaping the future of yachting.
