A screengrab from a large brawl that broke out in Alabama

Large brawl in Alabama as people defend Black riverboat worker against white assailants

Fight appeared to start when a worker objected to a pontoon boat preventing a larger river boat from docking, and was attacked by a group of white men

A dramatic brawl on the Montgomery, Alabama , riverfront pitted people standing up for a Black riverboat worker against a group of white people who began beating him for telling them to move their illegally parked pontoon.

The Saturday night fight, which was captured in multiple videos posted to social media, appeared to unfold largely along racial lines. And many social media users celebrated footage of the riverfront dust-up, which showed the white assailants get the tables turned on them by Black people who rushed to the riverboat worker’s aid.

“This is not … 1963 anymore,” read one comment, alluding to the year before the signing of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of race.

Montgomery police confirmed they responded to reports of a disturbance on the 200 block of Coosa Street in the area of the Montgomery riverfront park. They said officers had “located a large group of subjects engaged in a physical altercation”.

“Several subjects have been detained, and any charges are pending,” a police statement added, without elaborating.

The brawl appeared to start when a pontoon boat prevented a larger river boat from docking. When a Black riverboat worker objected, he was attacked by a group of white men .

The conflict escalated when a group of about six Black men from the riverboat confronted the white party. Cheered on by bystanders, they beat three white men and two women, at least one of whom could be seen first striking others by running up and throwing her body into them from behind.

At least two of the women jumped or were pushed into the river. A third was beaten over the head with a folding chair, video showed.

After the arrival of police officers, the brawl subsided – and then briefly reignited before police began cuffing the participants, Black and white.

NBC station WSFA of Montgomery reported that four arrest warrants have been issued in connection with the altercation and “there’s a possibility more will follow after the review of additional video”.

Police also appealed to the public for help in determining what had happened.

after newsletter promotion

Montgomery’s mayor, Steven Reed, said in a statement on Sunday that several people involved in the fighting on Saturday evening have been detained.

“Justice will be served,” he said. “This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred.”

As authorities try to untangle the incident, a man who was seen swimming across the river to the aid of the riverboat worker was partly identified as “Aaren”.

“In the face of adversity, Aaren selflessly came to the rescue of a fellow colleague, showcasing courage beyond his years,” a statement from his publicist, Makina Lashea, read.

An update on the investigation is expected on Monday afternoon.

Absolutely perfect in all ways!

My Friend and I went on the Riverboat Twilight and it was the most perfect/awesome adventure! From reserving our trip to our final walk to our car after the two day cruise, all was perfect! Staff are amazing, from the Captain to the servers, to the musical entertainers. The food is suburb and generous! Everything is very well organized, from our luggage/hotel in Dubuque/seating for meals, free shuttles in Dubuque, etc! The scenery and info along the way from the captain was wonderful! This was an absolutely perfect two day cruise, and we are going again in Mid October as we loved it so much!!.

The service by all involved was first class all the way!

We were very impressed by the personal service we received by the staff and everyone involved. The trip was very nice from a sightseeing perspective, interesting from a historical perspective and very relaxing overall. Plus the food was plentiful and excellent. We highly recommend this cruise to everyone!

Wonderful relaxing two days....

Extremely enjoyable trip. The cruise itself was delightful as you slowly moved up and down the river enjoying the wildlife and listening to the Captain explain the view and history. Unless you are a very big eater you have to be selective as they feed you FIVE times a day. Not only is the food plentiful but it is also very good. The Grand Resort in Dubuque was a nice stay as we had a view of the river. There was adequate time to explore some of the sights In Dubuque. I think we will do this trip again in the future…….

3 F's; Food, Food, and Fun

Excellent team from the captain to the crew provide a relaxing time..The chefs do an excellent job and there is more great food than you can imagine. This is the most organized and professional staff that we have ever experienced. No detail is overlooked.

If you are not vaccinated, we strongly encourage you to do so, however, at this time the Riverboat Twilight does not ask for proof of vaccination. Mask wearing is the choice of the individual. The Twilight offers ample indoor and outdoor seating on all three decks and plenty of fresh air.

We will continue to maintain our increased sanitization efforts of the TWILIGHT and our boarding facilities, and we continue to provide hand sanitizer aboard the boat and employ a strong air purifier that uses UVC lighting that has been proven to destroy viruses and other bacteria.

For the safety of our passengers and crew and to maintain proper cleanliness, we have implemented the following guidelines for parents of children under the age of 14. While onboard the vessel and when making use of our food and beverages services, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. With your cooperation and understanding, we will be able to continue to offer a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

As an owner, of the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Le Claire, IA and the President of Great Lakes Management Group which manages the hotel’s day to day operations, I wanted to say thank you. The business relationship with the Riverboat Twilight and her passengers is valued and much appreciated. We all know businesses from every industry has been operating in a different environment the last 8 weeks and will encounter new changes in the future.

We continue to monitor the franchise, local, state and federal safety guidelines to insure our guest and staff safety. For example, we anticipate a few changes in the near future which will include the following: a plastic shield / barrier at the front desk check,  revised breakfast offerings without a buffet setting, hand sanitizer located in the lobby and all floors at the elevator landings, continued use of hospital grade products to clean and sanitize the guest rooms, individual sanitizer wipes as an in-room amenity, removal of all products in the rooms that are reusable for example, pens, pads, laundry bags, and throw pillows, these items will be available upon request. What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition, and two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The remaining four are presumed dead. The workers are believed to be the only victims in the disaster.

Here’s what we know so far.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

Riley Strain's body found in Nashville river, police say

University of Missouri student Riley Strain 's body was found in the Cumberland River on Friday morning, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department announced.

"The body of Riley Strain was recovered from the Cumberland River in West Nashville this morning, approximately 8 miles from downtown," the department wrote on X . "No foul play-related trauma was observed. An autopsy is pending."

Police received a call around 7:28 a.m. from a worker at a nearby business who discovered Strain's body after removing an object from the river, Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake said during a press conference shortly after the discovery.

The city fire department then removed the body from the water and the medical examiner's office later confirmed the identity. Strain still had his shirt and other identifiable objects on his body, according to Drake.

His family has been notified.

"I want to say to the family, my heart and prayers go out to you all for this very unfortunate and tragic incident," Drake said. "I also want to say thank you to the Nashville community and the outpouring of support from the community in trying to help us locate Mr. Strain."

Given Strain's height and weight, police were expecting his body to surface between 14 and 20 days after his disappearance if it were in the Cumberland River.

"This is the 14th day, so we were really expecting anytime soon to find him," Drake said.

"Today, we mourn one of our Tigers," the University of Missouri wrote on X . "As the Mizzou community mourns Riley, we are keeping his family in our thoughts and offering support," university President Mun Choi added in a statement .

"Our hearts go out to Riley’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time as we work to provide support and resources to all those affected by this tragedy," the Delta Chi Fraternity said in a press release Friday.

Riley Strain

Strain went missing on March 8 after being asked to leave Luke's 32 Bridge Food + Drink in downtown Nashville while on a trip with Delta Chi for a spring formal.

The 22-year-old told his friends he would return to his hotel, stepfather Chris Whiteid told NBC News affiliate WSMV . Whiteid said in an interview on " Top Story with Tom Llamas " that Strain never made it back to the hotel.

Luke's 32 Bridge + Drink said in a statement on March 15 that Strain was served one alcoholic drink and two waters before being escorted out by security around 9:35 p.m. "based on our conduct standards," but did not elaborate further.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has been using boats with sonar capabilities and drones to search for Strain in the city's Cumberland River. His bank card was found between Gay Street and the river on March 17.

In security video released by police on March 12, Strain appears to sway and do a full 360-degree turn before continuing to walk while crossing 1st Avenue North to Gay Street at 9:47 p.m.

Other security cameras captured Strain stumbling at times and falling in one instance after leaving the bar.

Strain was last seen on video around 9:52 p.m., briefly interacting with an officer who was responding to a vehicle burglary on a sidewalk adjacent to the Cumberland River on Gay Street.

In the video released on March 19, Strain appears to be walking normally as the officer asks how he is doing, to which Strain replies, "I'm good, how are you?"

No evidence of foul play has surfaced during the investigation, according to the Nashville police.

Pasco scales back Anclote River Park revamp, schedules public meeting

  • Barbara Behrendt Times staff

Pasco County officials may be promising to scale back plans to revamp Anclote River Park.

But after months of public discussion, studies by Pasco County and scrutiny by Florida’s indigenous people, there are lingering fears among outdoor enthusiasts that the county’s plan to expand the park is still too much.

This week Linda Martell, who created the Change.org petition that has 5,300 signatures urging the county to be cautious, again asked the Pasco County Commission to do the right thing for those who enjoy its peace and green spaces.

Several months ago county officials notified Keith Overton, the business owner who has a lease to build a restaurant and add new commercial features at the park, including a possible event venue, that he had to downsize the original plan. He has not formally responded.

The county granted the lease for an ambitious project by Overton on the site, which is adjacent to a Native American mound, in August of 2022. His proposal had been for a themed 22,000-square-foot restaurant dubbed Whiskey Fish on the Anclote but the county said it wanted something more in the range of 3,000 square foot.

Martell told county commissioners that was still too much.

“Not only would this disrupt sacred lands but also nature,” she said, pointing out that dolphins and manatees frequent the river and adding more people and more boats would put them at risk. Previous reports also note there is an active bald eagle’s nest within the park boundaries.

Martell said park goers are fine frequenting a food truck or nearby restaurant when they go to the park to help small business owners, but not a larger, permanent building on site.

“Do what’s best for Anclote Park,” she urged commissioners. “We like our peace.”

In addition to the new features the county sought an outside business to provide, Pasco Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources also has its own plan to expand recreational options across the property. Weekends during peak boating season can be hectic and crowded. More parking and better circulation of traffic, as well as expanded boat launch facilities and an expanded beach, were planned.

Martell said that the county wasn’t thinking that through either.

“If there are fights happening at the boat ramp now,” she said, “what do you think is going to happen when you have a restaurant that serves alcohol?”

Commissioner Kathryn Starkey told Martell that the county is aware of the public concerns and that a scaled down plan for the park has been created. She encouraged Martell to pick up a copy and explained that the new approach is to build far fewer new parking spaces, to provide more green space and plant more trees.

She said that she was “very pleased” with the new emphasis and that no one in the county wants to see a huge commercial business on site.

Starkey also said the county has scheduled a long-promised town hall meeting to explain the plans. That has now been set for April 15 from 6-7 p.m. in the Pasco County Government Center in New Port Richey in the County Commission Chambers.

County parks staff were not available to respond to specific questions from the Tampa Bay Times about details of the scaled-back plan. They also have not explained how the county will respond to and incorporate information from the recent archaeological study and ground penetrating radar report about the indigenous mound there.

While the study didn’t find buried remains, it could not rule out the possibility that they exist. It offered recommendations including potentially creating interpretive displays on the grounds to tell visitors about the indigenous populations that once lived on or visited the site.

Providing educational information could help the county “strike the appropriate balance” between protecting the cultural resource and allowing public use and access to the park, the consultant said.

The consultant also urged Pasco officials to keep the representatives of indigenous groups involved in the county’s future plans for the park.

The body of a woman who was swept under the ice on Eagle River in December while trying to save her dog was recovered on Sunday, Anchorage police said.

Amanda Richmond Rogers, 45, had been walking with her husband along the North Fork Eagle River trail on Dec. 23 when one of their two dogs fell through the ice on the river, her family has said. Richmond Rogers jumped into the water to rescue her dog, they said.

The Alaska Dive Search, Rescue and Recovery Team looked for Rogers’ body in the days following her disappearance and continued some search efforts in January. The recovery of her body over the weekend was first reported by Alaska News Source.

A “citizen passerby” discovered Richmond Rogers’ body Sunday afternoon off the North Fork trail, police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said in an email Wednesday. Her body was recovered and the Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed her identity, Oistad said.

Richmond Rogers’ family has described her as a devoted mother to her four sons and an animal lover who considered her pets to be family.

Jacksonville Lacrosse Classic: Watch Live as JU battles the University of Utah

A river flood warning in effect for brantley county, arlington family dollar included in 1,000 stores closing nationwide.

Khalil Maycock , Reporter , Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An Arlington Family Dollar is one of Jacksonvlle’s 48 stores closing its doors as the store’s parent company, Dollar Tree, prepares to shut down 1,000 stores nationwide.

The store in the Dames Pointe Plaza on Merrill Road has been selling merchandise at 50% off to make way for the permanent closure.

Carts were filled to the top with merchandise as shoppers took advantage of the sales, leaving the shelves bare.

Jasmine said she stocked up on pet food, baby items and snacks.

Dollar Tree plans to close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year and 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores over the next several years.

As of right now, this is the only store closing under the slash of stores.

News4JAX news partner The Daily Record reached out to other local Family Dollars to see if they were closing and confirmed that they were not. We also contacted corporate to learn if any other stores in Jacksonville or surrounding areas are in danger of closing. We did not immediately hear back.

Some customers aren’t happy that a store they said fit into their budget is closing in their neighborhood.

Some shoppers said they would have to turn to other stores for their needs, which could be more expensive.

“With the economy the way it is, it helps me buy stuff I’m not able to get anywhere else,” John said. “It does stretch out my money but now that they’re gone it’s going to cost me more. Now, I gotta spend more money on gas to find another Family Dollar.”

John will have to drive about four minutes to another location to shop -- that’s a 22-minute walk for someone without a car.
