Honeywell’s Oleflex unit continues successful operation at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemicals Company

Honeywell today announced that the world’s largest High Performance Oleflex unit at Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical Co., LTD continues to produce 700,000 metric tons per year of polymer-grade propylene at its Lianyungang City plant in China’s Jiangsu Province. Propylene is the primary component in a variety of products including plastics, carpets, and moisture wicking fabric that are rapidly growing in demand.

The Honeywell UOP Oleflex process is used to produce light olefins through the catalytic dehydrogenation of light paraffin and provides users with an on-purpose source of polymer grade propylene and/or isobutylene. Coupled with Honeywell UOP’s DeH-16 high yield, high activity paraffin dehydrogenation catalyst, Sailboat’s low severity High Performance Oleflex unit continues to demonstrate low feed and energy consumption with low coke yield – lending itself to more stable, long-term operation. The Honeywell UOP Oleflex technology is a low-energy consumption, lower-emission technology that utilizes a catalyst with recyclable platinum with lower environmental impacts relative to comparable alternatives.

“Our Sailboat propane dehydration unit is the first low severity High Performance Oleflex unit in China. Additional collaboration with Honeywell on the intelligent and digital aspects of the unit include a first-in-China proprietary carbon emission system which allows for real-time computing and monitoring of carbon dioxide emissions from the PDH daily operation,” said Oleflex Project Leader, Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemicals Co. “Sailboat can achieve the best production cost and the lowest carbon emission while maintaining the leading position in propane dehydrogenation thanks to Honeywell’s High Performance Oleflex design and DeH-16™ catalyst.”

“Through the use of Honeywell’s High Performance Oleflex unit and DeH-16 catalyst, Sailboat’s Oleflex unit can achieve lower feed and energy consumption and reduce direct carbon dioxide emissions based on carbon regeneration,” said Eric Seidel, vice president and general manager, Honeywell UOP Lifecycle Solutions and Technologies. “Our ready-now Oleflex technology and catalysts can allow companies like Sailboat to contribute to the transformation and upgrading of the national manufacturing industry.”

Sailboat successfully commissioned its High Performance Oleflex unit in 2022 and achieved the complementary advantages of its two Honeywell UOP licensed technologies, Methanol to Olefins (MTO) and Oleflex in production of propylene. This combination gives Sailboat the flexibility to adjust the production capacity of MTO and propane dehydration (PDH) units according to the market conditions of methanol and propane to further reduce cost, increase efficiency and profitability. Sailboat owns one of 40 operating Oleflex units and one of seven operating MTO units, globally.

Honeywell recently committed to achieving carbon neutrality in its operations and facilities by 2035. This commitment builds on the company’s track record of sharply reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of its operations and facilities as well as its decades-long history of innovation to help its customers meet their environmental and social goals. About 60% of Honeywell’s new product introduction research and development investment is directed toward products that improve environmental and social outcomes for customers.

Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemicals to build world-scale Methanol-To-Olefin

Ineos-uop to provide mto technology license.

The Chinese Jiangsu Sailboat Petrochemical Company Ltd (JSPCL) selected the Ineos and Honeywell’s UOP technology for its world-scale methanol-to olefin (MTO) project planned at Lianyungang , in the north of the eastern province of Jiangsu in China .

JSPCL  belongs to the large Jiangsu Shenghong Group , listed among the top 500 Chinese companies .

From its  core business focusing  on printing and dyeing  materials  and  technologies,  the  Jiangsu Shenghong Group   diversified its activities in the year 2000s  in the  fibers and chemicals polymers  in order to  integrate a part of its supply chain

Jiangsu-Saiboat_Lianyungang_China_map

Through this  vertical integrated business model Jiangsu Shenghong  intends to  preserve its business against  the  fluctuation of the prices  of  vital material feedstock

With a  capacity of 833,000 t/y  of  ethylene  and  propylene ,  Jiangsu Sailboat  is planning to  build a world scale MTO facility .

To be located in Lianyongang, in the north of the Jiangsu province , this greenfield plant should have the world largest single train of MTO .

Jiangsu Sailboat to build a 4 million t/y complex

For this complex process , Jiangsu Sailboat  selected the MTO technology developed jointly by the chemical company   Ineos and the process and automation firm Honeywell’s UOP .

Having the third largest reserves of coal after the USA and Russia, China is developing all solutions to convert the coal into valuable energy or feedstock through processes such as coal gazification or coal-to-methanol as the building block of the petrochemical industry .

The joined MTO license developed by Ineos  and Honeywell’s UOP , is combing UOP Hydro MTO process with the Total UOP Olefin cracking process .

Jiangsu-Sailboat_UOP_Lupotech_Technology

In addition it gives more flexibility in the balance of production between ethylene  and  propylene , and it provides a wider range of hydrocarbon products from the hydrocracking performed by this process .

Honeywell’s UOP  will also support Jiangsu Sailboat  with engineering, training, technical services, supply for catalysts and adsorbents.

In that respect, Jiangsu Sailboat  expects its methanol-to-olefin greenfield  facility to run into operations in 2015 in order to supply olefins  to its petrochemical  complex in project downstream .

The Jiangsu Sailboat Green Methanol plant will be built in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province on the east coast of China, integrated into the 15 km2 Shenghong Petrochemical Industrial Park, one of Chinas largest petrochemical sites.

Here Jiangsu Sailboat produces ethylene and propylene in the world’s largest methanol-to-olefins (MTO) process plant for downstream processing into 2.4 million tonnes per annum of a wide range of polymers and plastics, including products used for making solar panels and plexiglass.

The green methanol plant will recycle approximately 150 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 20 000 tonnes of hydrogen (H2) annually captured from other onsite processes to produce 100 000 tonnes of methanol annually. Indirect emission savings from avoiding the use of fossil raw materials is estimated to be as high as 550 000 tonnes annually.

This project is perfectly aligned with Shenghong Petrochemical’s strategy to vigorously develop the circular economy. We strive to achieve safe development, low emissions, and efficient resource use through cyclic utilization. This is a major step in our efforts to build a green industrial value chain to make the best use of everything, achieve clean production and become the world’s first-rate ecological, intelligent and safe petrochemical enterprise, said Wei Bai, CEO of Jiangsu Sailboat.

The plant will be owned and operated by Jiangsu Sailboat and is expected to begin its operation in 2023. The cost of the project is estimated at around RMB 225 million (≈ US$35 million).

Second CRI project in China

This project will be the second in China based on CRI’s ETL technology. The first CRI project, the Shunli plant in Anyang , Henan Province, is currently in the final stages of construction and is expected to be in operation early next year.

CRI, with its local JV partner MFE, will facilitate the project execution, providing design, engineering, and technology license for the CO2-to-methanol process along with key proprietary equipment and related services.

This agreement is exemplary of what the chemical industry can do to contribute to the fight against climate change. By utilizing waste and by-product resources in an innovative way we can take the necessary steps to reduce emissions and replace traditional fossil fuels in the production of most of our consumer products, said Ingolfur Gudmundsson, CEO of CRI.

Hi-tech Equipment of Great Power! Jiangsu’ Tallest Propylene-Propane Distillation Column Successfully Lifted and Installed

On March 25, 2021,

a major project of Jiangsu Province

the Phase II Propane Industry Chain Project of Sailboat Petrochemical

was facing a key node in its construction

The core equipment, the propylene-propane distillation column,

was successfully lifted and installed

All three large columns of the PDH equipment were installed

indicating that the project installation work was already in full swing

and signaling the beginning of the interim delivery counting down stage

The propylene propane distillation column is a part of the core equipment of the propane industry chain project and it is used to separate propylene and propane. The column was manufactured, transported, lifted and installed as a whole. The diameter of the column was 10 meters. Its height was 100.8 meters. The weight of the column was 1,845 tons when it was lifted for installation. In Jiangsu Province, it was the tallest among the columns of the same kind. To ensure that the column will be successfully lifted and installed at the first attempt, the largest domestic 4,000 ton crawler crane was used as the main crane. The successful lift and installation laid a solid foundation for the future progress of the project.

To extend and optimize the industrial structure, cultivate and expand the leading industry and build a new chemical material base with global influence, Sailboat Petrochemical has started the propane industry chain project according to the existing industrial layout advantages. The project construction has been divided into two phases. In Phase I, the main production equipment such as one 0.7 MTPA propane dehydrogenation (PDH) unit, one 0.26 MTPA acrylonitrile unit and one 90 KTPA MMA unit, and some supportive facilities are to be built. In Phase II, the main production equipment such as one 0.26 MTPA acrylonitrile unit, one 90 KTPA MMA equipment and one 0.21 MTPA SAR unit, and some supportive facilities are to be built. After completed, the project will have an annual production capacity of 700,000 tons of propylene, 520,000 tons of acrylonitrile and 180,000 tons of MMA. After all the projects are completed and put into operation, the overall acrylonitrile production scale of Sailboat Petrochemical will reach 1.04 million tons per year and the project site will become a world-level acrylonitrile production base.

Acrylonitrile is an important raw material used to develop the new material industry in China. It is mainly used to produce carbon fibers, ABS resin/plastic, nitrile rubber, acrylic fibers, etc. The downstream products are widely used in various fields of the national economy such as aerospace, automobile, machinery, electronic devices, environment protection industry, medicaments and pesticides.

At present, both production and marketing of the acrylonitrile products of Sailboat Petrochemical thrive. The acrylonitrile products have increased the economic benefits of the company. Since the first set of equipment was installed and put into operation in 2016, the acrylonitrile products of Sailboat Petrochemical have been stable and excellent, they have been approved by the market and customers and the products have been sold in Southeast Asia, Europe and America.

After the propane industry chain project is put into operation, the acrylonitrile production process route of Sailboat Petrochemical will be greatly enriched. The new production process route will ensure that sufficient raw materials will be provided for downstream strategic emerging industries “following the chain” such as new energy, new materials, electron chemistry and biotechnology and the new process route will play an important role in accelerating the “double circulation” of the Chinese petrochemical industry and achieving the high-quality development.
