Sommertörn 2023 - die AVALON auf Kalvø

In diesem Sommer war unsere AVALON mit Skipperin Birgit öfter auf der idyllischen dänischen Insel Kalvø zu Gast. Kalvø ist ein Naturjuwel abseits der touristischen Routen.

Die Insel ist nur 18 Hektar groß und hat 8 Einwohner.

Aufgrund von Funden wurde festgestellt, dass Kalvø bereits in der Steinzeit besiedelt war.

Sehenswert ist das Herrenhaus in dem der dänische Reeder Jörgen Bruhn lebte, nachdem er 1847 die Insel gekauft hatte. Ab 1848 wurde hier eine Werft gebaut, die damals zu einer der größten Dänemarks gehörte und auf der ein Teil Europas größter und schnellster Handelsflotte entstand. 

Sollte Ihnen während des Törns dort ein Wikingerschiff begegnen: Auf Kalvø betreibt eine Wikingerzunft einen Nachbau des berühmten 'Ladby' Schiffes.

Für den Inselrundweg „Kalvøstien“ sollte man sich Zeit nehmen:

Der Spaziergang führt durch herrliche Natur mit schönen Aussichtspunkten auf Landschaft und Meer. Der Weg führt durch bewaldete Hänge im Norden und Süden, im Osten öffnet sich der Blick auf den kleinen Belt.

AVALON Yacht for Charter

Created for adventure with a technologically advanced composite hull and GRP superstructure, she has an impressive volume of 472 gross tons.

Twin Caterpillar 3508B engines, each providing 1,000hp, deliver a top speed of 15.5 knots and cruising speed of 12 knots, plus a trans-Atlantic range of 5,000 nautical miles thanks to her 71,536 litre fuel tanks. Equipped with an ultra-modern stabilisation system and zero speed stabilisers at anchor, roll motion is reduced, resulting in a smoother experience for guests.

The Captain

Falling in love with boating at a young age, Captain Jesse Clinton spent his childhood sailing the east coast with his family. It was at the tender age of just 18 that Jesse earned his captain’s license, before spending time crewing aboard sailing yachts and busy charter motor yachts. As the captain on board Avalon, his calm demeanour, enthusiastic personality and natural affinity with the ocean make him a respected leader by his professional crew. A keen watersports enthusiast, he particularly enjoys wakeboarding, surfing and paddleboarding.

The Cuisine

Chef Mark Cervo joined Avalon from an extensive career in the culinary world. Originally from San Jose, California, he spent over 15 years working in the Caribbean, specifically the Virgin Islands. It was here, after working as the Executive Chef in the Ritz Carlton, that he opened three restaurants and a catering business.

Looking for a new challenge, Mark sold all of his ventures and discovered the world of superyachting. Classically French trained at the Four Season's Hotel, he has since had over three decades of experience and is well versed in all cuisines. He brings a wealth of culinary knowledge to Avalon and is excited to share his creativity with guests.

From hors d’oeuvres, to formal dining, to a midnight snack, his gastronomic delights will tantalise even the most discerning taste buds. He takes pleasure in discussing menus well in advance to ensure a snag-free charter that pleases the tastebuds of each and every guest on board.

Hi Trina, We had such a terrific time. They are amazing hosts. Carla is a fantastic cook and really went out of her way to make certain she was cooking food we all would enjoy. Alex is a great host and certainly knew when to hit each spot when the crowds were about to disperse. He really knows his stuff! Alex's daughter Molly was the third crew member and so fantastic...especially for our kids. We can't say enough about the quality of the trip and the attention to detail. We have so many wonderful memories and photos too. I think Alex is going to use some of the shots for their facebook page. Our kids caught two big fish one day and we managed to capture the haul on camera!! That shot alone is enough to entice any family with young children. We'd love to do another trip with them on the Avalon. Failing that we are definitely going to use Charterworld for our next trip. Delta Marine Motor Yacht Avalon For Sale

Sold in July 2017, the 46 metre motor yacht Katya is back on the market. It has been renamed Avalon and listed for sale by Thom Conboy and Chris Collins at Ocean Independence.

Built in GRP by US yard Delta Marine to Lloyds class and MCA compliant, Avalon was launched in 2009 and went on to become a finalist at the 2010 World Superyacht Awards.

Her interior resonates with richness and warmth. The woods chosen - dark khaya veneers and cinamora burls accented by maple, amboyna burls and mahogany - provide an elegant contrast to her light furnishings in marble, leather and rich fabrics.

Avalon can comfortably accommodate 12 guests in five cabins. The full-beam master suite is located forward on the main deck and there are a further four double cabins below. All cabins on this yacht for sale have flatscreen television sets and full en suite bathroom facilities.

The main saloon offers panoramic views through large windows and curved glass entry doors flanked with a mirrored set of bar cabinets. Further forward is the formal dining area with a custom mahogany dining table and matching buffet units port and starboard.

A British security source told the Guardian on Monday that the nerve agent attack on the former double agent Sergei Skripal was also ordered by the intelligence agency. The British government is poised to submit an extradition request to Moscow for two Russians suspected of carrying out the Salisbury attack that left one person dead and three injured, including Skripal and his daughter.

One of the three main Russian intelligence agencies, less has been written about the GRU (now officially called the GU, or Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces) than its sister agencies, particularly the Soviet-era KGB or its modern successor the FSB, the spy agency once headed by Vladimir Putin .

Known for operating under a wartime mentality and a willingness to take risks, experts say the culture of the GRU has been influenced by its inclusion of Spetsnaz special forces and experience in war zones, including Syria and Ukraine .

Open source researchers have claimed that a GRU officer supervised the transport of anti-aircraft weapons to eastern Ukraine when the Malaysian jetliner flight MH17 was shot down there, killing 298 people.

“The GRU regards itself as a war-fighting instrument. Yes, it gathers conventional intelligence … but its culture is much more military,” said Mark Galeotti, an expert on Russian security issues and the country’s intelligence agencies . “Although only a minority of GRU officers are Spetsnaz, it has an impact when part of your service are commandos.”

Besides special forces, the spy agency manages more traditional intelligence-gathering operations around the world, as well as signals intelligence.

Vladimir Rezun, a GRU officer who defected to the UK in the 1970s, wrote in his history of the agency (written under the pen name Viktor Suvorov) that it was largely tasked with preventing the collapse of the Soviet Union from without, as opposed to the KGB, which had a prominent role in thwarting internal threats.

While the KGB became notorious, the GRU largely operated in obscurity. “In the people’s consciousness, everything that is dark, underground and secret is connected with the KGB but not at all with the GRU,” he wrote.

Traditionally, Galeotti noted, the GRU answered for “uncontrolled spaces”. While in the past that has meant areas like civil wars, it may also apply to zones like cyberspace now.

Several Russian intelligence agencies were involved in hacking operations before the 2016 US presidential elections, but only the GRU was identified in an 11-count indictment released last month by the United States special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. The hack was perpetrated by staff employees of several Moscow-based units traditionally tied to signal intelligence.

The interests of Russia’s intelligence agencies regularly overlap, as have their methods. As Christopher Andrew wrote in The Mitrokhin Archive: The KGB in Europe and the West, his study of notes on KGB files smuggled out of Russia, the agency “offered its allies lethal nerve toxins and poisons which were fatal on contact with the skin for use during ‘special actions’”.

While the GRU has largely been shrouded in secrecy, there have been occasional contacts with the west.

Peter Zwack, a retired US army brigadier general, wrote about a series of meetings before the Sochi Olympics with the head of the GRU, Igor Sergun, who died unexpectedly of a heart attack in January 2016. “I found him soft-spoken, unassuming, complex, erudite and nuanced,” he said of their meetings, which largely focused on counter-terrorism efforts.

“I learned that even as Sergun relentlessly directed global intelligence operations against our interests, he — paradoxically — also viewed constant confrontation with the US and west as not in Russia’s best long-term interest,” Zwack wrote.

Those meetings ended after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
