Both ferry routes 602 and 9602 are state lines , meaning that the state partly finances them, reason for this is to ensure that the people living on Island Vis have an affordable option to get to the mainland year around.

Basically neither Split port nor Vis port has a car queuing system, so normally cars, trucks, buses, would be loaded according to when they arrived at the port , but there is an exception, on Sat and Sunday during July and August cars are loaded first on the first two car ferry departures to and from Vis.

Yes but only on the car ferry departures, for the bike you need to buy a ticket which costs the same as a foot passenger ticket.

If you are e.g. 3 adults and a regular car going on the ferry, the price calculations for one-way tickets are the following, car (Less than 5 meters in length, and two meters in height) = 47,25 € + 3 adults (3 * 8,23 €) = 24,69 €, so in total, your price will be 71,94 €. The three ferry companies, Jadrolinija, TP-Line, and Kapetan Luka, operate high-speed catamarans from Split to Hvar. Jadrolinija is Croatia’s largest national ferry company and the only one offering Split Hvar car ferry service. TP-Line provides a catamaran service from Split to Hvar, but only during the months of June through September. Kapetan Luka , also known as Krilo, operates high-speed catamarans between Split and Hvar and other ports in Croatia. It provides fast catamaran service from Split to Hvar throughout the year.

These catamaran companies sail up to 18 times daily between Split and Hvar Town, making them more frequent than ferries. Jadrolinija also has catamarans sailing between Split, Jelsa, and Stari Grad on Hvar Island.

Additionally, some catamarans connect the town of Hvar and Split with other islands and towns, like Korcula, Vis, Lastovo, and Makarska. Catamarans are more expensive than ferries, but if you are on a budget, Jadrolinja’s catamarans that sail on the longer routes to Korcula, Vis, or Brac have almost four times lower prices per person than Jadrolinija’s Split-Hvar-Split catamaran or those of other companies such as TP-Line and Kapetan Luka.

The HSC Kalelarga catamaran sails between Split and Hvar via Milna on the island of Brac. The journey on TP Line’s catamarans takes 55 minutes on a direct line, 2 hours and 25 minutes via Vis, and 1 hour and 15 minutes via Milna on Brac.

Kapetan Luka offers a variety of ferry options for travelers who want to go from Split to Hvar or from Hvar to Split. How to Reach Hvar from Split by Speedboat

If you want a quick and luxurious option to reach Hvar, then speedboats are the best way to travel from Split to Hvar. They are perfect for groups, couples seeking a romantic experience, or anyone who wants to enjoy a luxurious mode of transportation. Speedboats are fast and take you from Split to Hvar in as little as one hour.

Several private speedboat companies operate in Split, so it’s important to research and compare prices to find the best deal. We recommend using providers like Bookaway or GetYourGuide to compare different speedboat offers and find the best deal.

A one-way speedboat transfer price usually starts at 500€ for a 4-person boat, and the price goes up with the size of the boat.

As you can see, the speedboat costs are considerably higher than other options, and availability may be limited. Speedboats aren’t the most suitable option for budget travelers.

Speedboat transfers offer the most convenient way of traveling from Split Airport to Hvar. The transfer from the airport to the nearby embarkation dock is already included in the price. Opting for a speedboat transfer saves you the hassle of traveling from Split Airport to Split Port and waiting for a ferry to Hvar. Not only is it a more comfortable mode of transport, but the slightly higher price may be justified given the added convenience.

Traveling by Car to Hvar

To get from Split to Hvar by car, you will need to take car ferry operated by Jadrolinija. The car ferry sails between Split and Hvar four times a day in winter and seven times a day in high season, taking approximately 2 hours. Upon arrival at Stari Grad, it will take around 30 minutes to reach Hvar Town by car.

The ticket price is 5.71€ per person during the low season and 8.10€ per person during the high season. A car costs 34.24€ in the low season and 45.77€ in the high season.

How to Get from Split Airport to Hvar

If you are traveling from Split Airport to Hvar, the fastest way is by speedboat transfer. As we have already explained, the speedboat transfer costs 500€ for a 4-person speedboat, and the prices go up with the size of the speedboat.

The embarkation dock is less than 1 km from the Airport, and the transfer to the dock is included in the price of a speedboat transfer.

The speedboat, having more flexibility than a ferry or catamaran, has the luxury of dropping you off as close to your Hvar accommodation. We use the Bookaway website to search for speedboat transfers between Split Airport and Hvar.

However, this option may not be suitable for budget travelers due to its high cost. Thankfully, other options offer more affordable prices and still get you to your destination in a reasonable amount of time.

If you have rented a car at Split Airport, driving to Hvar from the airport is possible. The journey involves driving to the port of Split and then taking the 2-hour ferry ride to Stari Grad. From there, take the 30-minute drive to Hvar Town. Check the best car rental deals here!

Shuttle bus transfers from Split Airport to Split Central Bus Station run regularly and take approximately 40 minutes. The port of Split is located just across from the Split Central Bus Station, within a 2-minute walk. From Split Port, you can take a ferry or a catamaran to Hvar.

Lastly, private transfers are available from Split Airport to Hvar by car or van if you prefer a more direct route. These transfers can be arranged through various companies and offer a more personalized experience with the added benefit of door-to-door service. The private transfer costs around 250€ for a 3-person vehicle, including ferry costs. The prices for a van transfer from Split Airport to Hvar for eight persons start at 300€. Hvar Airport

Hvar doesn’t have its own airport, so if you’re traveling from other parts of Croatia or Europe, you’ll need to fly to Split Airport. From there, you can easily reach Hvar using the various transportation methods mentioned earlier. While Brac Island, Zadar, and Dubrovnik airports are also available, they are further away from Split and offer fewer transportation options to reach Hvar.

However, Hvar does have an airstrip designed for small panoramic and sports planes. This modest airstrip, located just outside Stari Grad, is a field. Our friends flew to Hvar from Pula using a small Cessna aircraft, which was able to land on this modest airstrip.

Accommodation in Hvar

Hvar offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets and preferences. The island has numerous hotels, hostels, villas, and private apartments available for rent. Booking your accommodation in advance is recommended as Hvar is a popular tourist destination and tends to get fully booked quickly. However, if you’re traveling during the shoulder season (May and September), you may find more availability and better deals.

For a more authentic experience, consider staying in one of Hvar’s charming villages like Stari Grad or Jelsa. These smaller towns offer a quieter atmosphere and are perfect for those looking to escape the crowds. You can also opt for a private villa or apartment rental in these areas, which offer more privacy and space. If you prefer to be close to the action, staying in Hvar Town would be your best option. Here, you’ll find a mix of luxury and budget accommodations and proximity to all the main attractions and nightlife.

Where is Hvar and how to get there from Split?

Hvar is situated in the Adriatic Sea near the islands of Vis and Korcula. The only means of transportation to this fairly small island is by boat. Getting from Split to Hvar by ferry is easy , convenient and quick !

The Split - Hvar ferry route is active all year round with up to 20 daily connections during the high season, giving you lots of choices for your departure times. There are several ferry companies that operate routes between the two destinations: Kapetan Luka , Jadrolinija and TP Line .

In summer, the earliest ferry departs Split at 07:30 , arriving in Hvar at around 08:30, while the latest one leaving Hvar for Split is at 21:00 . 

Useful info : keep in mind that the ferries departing Split for Hvar are passenger-only catamarans . In case you want to travel with your car to Hvar, we recommend taking the Jadrolinija car ferry from Split to the port of Stari Grad (30 minutes by car from Hvar Town).

1. Explore Hvar Town

Before setting out on an adventure to explore the island, the first thing you should do in Hvar is to explore Hvar Town. This is the island’s hub and busiest destination, and where you will disembark the ferry. 

Spend the morning wandering and exploring Hvar’s charming traffic-free cobblestone streets . There are so many cafes, restaurants and shops to discover in each narrow alley. The main spots in the town that you should definitely visit are the Venetian Loggia and Clock Tower, as well as St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Square - the largest square in the Dalmatia region. Here, you can take a coffee break or grab a delicious bite.

2. Admire the view from Fortica Fortress

Once you finish wandering around the cute streets of Hvar Town, follow the stairs up the tree-shaded hillside and look for the signs that say “Fortica”. If you’re not up for a 20-30 minute walk , you can also drive to the very top of the historic Spanish Fortress or take a taxi.

For a small fee , you can climb all the way to the very top of the fort, admiring the magnificent views looking down over Hvar and the nearby Pakleni Islands. This is also a great spot to watch the sunset .

3. Drive to Hvar’s best beaches and party at its legendary beach bars

Hvar is home to several beautiful beaches . With a day trip though, you will want to stick to those that are relatively close to the town center , such as Dubovica and Malo Zarace .

Pokonji Dol is another wonderful beach with deep-blue waters and a pebbled shore, just a 15-minute drive away from Hvar Town (or a 30-minute walk). It is also dotted with a few restaurants, bars, and facilities, so after a refreshing dip you could sample a few of the island’s exceptional local flavors . Particular seafood specialties to look out for in Hvar include gragada (fish stew). In addition, considering Hvar's reputation as Croatia's premier party town , dancing on tables at the island’s legendary beach bars is a must!

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something more low-key and peaceful, the island's southern coast has some of Hvar’s most beautiful and isolated coves . It’s also worth knowing that the island has many nude-friendly beaches - these are usually signposted as FKK - free body culture.

Tip : one very popular and fun way to drive around Hvar is in a vintage beetle . This also makes for some awesome photo ops.

4. Visit the lavender fields in Hvar

Another characteristic that can be ascribed to Hvar is its wonderfully beautiful lavender . Most of the island’s lavender fields are located near the village of Velo Grablje, Brusje and along the road from Stari Grad to Hvar. 

The best time to visit the lavender fields in Hvar is in June and July when the lavender is in full bloom. At this time of year, the Adriatic air is filled with the enticing aroma of blooming lavender. In addition, the contrast between the vivid purple of the lavender and the turquoise sea will leave you in awe.

In case you want to get a lovely and unique souvenir from Hvar, the island’s town is home to a number of small lavender gardens and shops selling lavender-based products, including oils, sachets, soaps, cakes, and even ice cream.

Tip : usually, there is a Lavender Festival taking place every year at the end of June in the village of Grablje. It lasts 2 days and gives visitors a chance to learn more about this exceptional product.

Hvar to Vis costs 180 kuna. Hvar to Split via Vis costs 120 kuna. Bizarre pricing.

That is very odd...the same rates are showing on getbyferry site as well 🤔

So far I know, some of the catamaran lines are sponsored by the state (or even some catamaran ride), so for the same line at different times of the day you get different prices.

I emailed them and received a reply that this pricing is correct as the price to Split on their other line is 120HRK so they kept it the same. So strange. Yes I'm sure you could just pay the 120 and disembark at Vis.

Day 1: Trogir

Before embarking your luxury crewed catamaran in Trogir, be sure to soak up the atmosphere in this charming town and its picturesque winding streets. Trogir earned its status as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 1997 due to the many beautiful Romanesque and Renaissance buildings that remain standing to this day. Explore the medieval castle and wander down the seaside promenade, which is brimming with lively restaurants, bars and boutiques. After exploring, make sure you get settled into your luxury catamaran and get to know your crew, before setting sail to the island of Solta.

Day 2: Trogir to Solta

Day 3: Solta to Brac

Brac is the largest of the Dalmatian Islands and is characterized by its fascinating karst limestone landscape. A must-see spot on the island is the well-known Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn) Beach that is located just west of the charming coastal town of Bol. This beach is the epitome of Adriatic natural beauty – you can lie here for hours whiling away the afternoon, looking out onto the crystal clear waters and relaxing on the ivory sand. In the town of Bol, be sure to stop at Ranč, a wonderful traditional Croatian restaurant that serves fantastic roasted lamb and octopus.

Day 4: Brac to Stari Grad

On your arrival in Stari Grad, take in the magnificent and medieval grandeur of Petar Hektorović's Tvrdalj, the most famous building in the city. Maybe head to Škor Square or the UNESCO heritage site which occupies most of the island. Stari Grad is a great option for those who are looking for a quieter, more tranquil Croatian town than Hvar. It is a good port and easier to access than Hvar's main port, but there are plenty of restaurants and bars for you to relax in during the evening.

Day 5: Stari Grad to Hvar

If you are in search of something slightly more subdued, why not sail over to the south west of the island where you will find the ‘Pakleni Otoci’ (Resin Islands), a small cluster of islands and islets that are perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle of Hvar Town. Drop anchor in some of Croatia’s most beautiful and isolated coves and enjoy a fantastic traditional dinner made with some of the local olive oil, honey, rosemary and lavender.

Day 6: Hvar to Vis

On day six continue to cruise to the Island of Vis. This island is said to be the most mysterious of the Dalmatian Islands – it is the furthest from the coast and for years it was used as a military base and cut off from tourists, meaning it is considerably less developed than other Croatian islands. Vis’ lack of development has now recently attracted many tourists looking for an authentic, natural and tranquil holiday destination.

The romantic port town of Komiza is a lovely place to visit for the day and have a light lunch on the seafront. Cruise over to the smaller island of Biševo in the early afternoon and discover the fascinating Blue Cave for a truly magical experience! The Adriatic Sea has a Mediterranean climate . The real summer heat starts in May. From here, average temperatures above 20 degrees are typical. The water is only 19 degrees at this time; it can be cool for many to swim. Summer peaks in July and August, when the average temperature is higher than 30 degrees. You can already swim in the sea, which is around 24 degrees. The wind highly depends on the current season. For the routes described below, the mistral blowing from the northwest can make your job a little harder in the summer. In spring and autumn, the winds are varied: the north-northeast bora and the southern Jugo blow alternately. Check the sailing conditions and wind rose diagram of Dalmatia .

What costs do you have to count with?

The currency of Croatia is the kuna. We recommend that you change kuna at your local bank or non-airport currency exchange upon arrival, so the exchange rate is a bit more favourable. The price of the moorings does not change outside the high season, in which case they are only 5-10% cheaper. You will have to pay around 60-100 euros for each port you visit. If you are sailing a catamaran, calculate with 1.5 times the usual rate. Catamarans are subject to fifty per cent surcharge. Food and drinks are relatively expensive compared to other Adriatic countries.

What to see in Split?

Split Airport is located about 25 km northwest of the city. Many transfer companies are available, but you have to book a seat in advance. You can also take the bus that comes every 20 minutes. The trip to the city takes one hour. In the city centre you can find Inside you will find the ancient palace of Diocletian along with the Peristilium. Directly in front of them is the Cathedral of St. Domnius, whose tower offers a magnificent view. From here in good weather, you can see even to the island of Brac. If you love the fish, be sure to visit the city’s huge fish market as well. You will walk north from ACI Marina to the city centre. First, you will find yourself on the beautiful Riva promenade, which was completed a few years ago, where restaurants, cafes, pubs, and shops meet.

One-way or round trip?

Both routes are easy to do for beginners as well because the distances are shorter. Hvar has an elongated shape, you have to sail west and east quite a lot. Choose the one-way trip if you want the town of Hvar to be your destination. In summer, the mistral wind makes it a little more difficult to sail back to Split.

Port of Rogač

It has a favourable location, only 16 kilometres from Split. The main advantage of the port is that it is not too crowded. There are showers, free WiFi, a nearby gas station, a café and a pizzeria. Port of Stomorska

The port is located in a small natural bay, providing protection for boats. Only the Bora winds can cause bigger waves here. The port has 30 berths, 4 of them for boats over 50 metres in length. Port of Maslinica

The Marina Martinis Marchi is located on the west side of the island of Šolta. It is part of the Martinis Marchi Heritage Hotel Group. The port has 50 berths for yachts up to 35 metres in length. Larger megayachts can berth near the breakwater. The depth of the seabed is 2-11 metres. Every berth has drinking water and electricity, and there are WiFi and showers available. The restaurant and bar are open from May to October, but the port is open all year round. However, in July and August, yachts arriving late are often unable to find a berth. It is therefore advised to arrive early or reserve a berth.

The Agana Marina can accommodate 134 boats with a length of up to 25 metres. The depth of water at the entrance is 7 metres. Every mooring has running water and electricity. Port of Trogir

The SCT Marina Trogir has 256 berths for boats up to 90 metres in length. The depth of the seabed is 20 metres. There is drinking water, electricity, 24-hour security, free WiFi, laundry, refuelling station, and even ship maintenance is available. Yacht charter Trogir

Port of Supetar (Brač)

There is only a limited number of berths in the port. Supetar’s outer port is reserved for ferries and commercial vessels. In contrast, mostly smaller boats and yachts use the inner basin. Port of Podstrana

The luxurious Marina Lav belongs to the Le Meridien Lav hotel complex. It can accommodate 74 yachts with a maximum length of 40 m. The depth varies between 2-2.8 m. Marina Kaštel Gomilica

This is the only port in Croatia that can accommodate superyachts up to 140 m. Refuelling is among the quality services of the port. The recently built port is in the southwestern part of Kaštela Bay. It has 420 sea berths, and 200 land berths, all offering water and electricity. The depth of the seabed is between 2, 5 m and 8 m. There is a reception desk, a self-service laundry, a yacht club and a refuelling station. As for restaurants, you can choose BavAdria café, Nautic restaurant or Spinnaker restaurant. Port of Omiš

This small Central Dalmatian town lies at the mouth of the Cetina River. It is surrounded by massive gorges. The Bora wind, coming from every direction, and the southern winds cause strong waves in the area. The depth of the seabed is 4 m. Information about sailing in Omis , or rent a boat in Omis

Port of Hvar

The town of Hvar Island, which bears the same name, is the most popular docking place on the island. The port provides safety against northern winds; however, southern and northwestern winds can cause significant waves. Docking is expensive on the town’s pier, but you can do it on the other side of the port for a fair price. You can choose from several services including fuelling. Marina Sveti Klement (Hvar)

ACI Marina Palmižana is located on the northeastern part of Saint Klement Island, which belongs to the Pakleni archipelago. This is one of the safest harbours on the Adriatic Sea. It offers 180 berths for ships as long as 30 metres. The depth of the water is 3–8 metres. It is open seasonally, from the 1st of April until the 31st of October. They provide showers, Wi-Fi, cafés, and if you are hungry you can also find restaurants and grocery stores.

The port of Brusje (Hvar)

The little port called Stiniva Marina can accommodate up to 8 boats. The depth of the water is 2–4.5 metres. There is also a small restaurant in the bay.

Marina Stari Grad (Hvar)

Stari Grad is the oldest town in Hvar Island, and its port can accept a total of 150 boats. The depth of the water is 13 metres at the entrance and 4–5 metres at the town pier. At the port, you can find cafés, restaurants and an information office as well. Stari Grad sailing

The port of Vrboska (Hvar)

ACI Marina Vrboska is famous for its beautiful surroundings. Beautiful lavender fields, ancient olive trees and vineyards can be found nearby. It can accept a total of 119 boats with a length of up to 20 metres. The depth of the water is 5 metres. The port offers several good-quality services including a fuel station.

Port of Jelsa (Hvar)

The port has 54 berths for ships up to 40 metres. The depth of the water is 2.70–4 metres at the northern and 1.50–3.70 metres at the southern shores. They offer water, electricity and shower cabins.

The port of Sućuraj (Hvar)

Sućurajis a small port and tourist establishment. It is located in Sućuraj Bay, in the eastern part of Hvar Island. It offers 9 berths for yachts, which are located to the west from the ferry port. The depth of the water is 2-3 metres.

Port of Sveta Nedjelja

Marina Zlatan Otok is a small port run by a family. It is located in a small village called Sveta Nedjelja on the southern shore of Hvar Island, app. 12 kilometres from Hvar city. The port can accept ships up to 18 metres long – the depth of the water is 4 metres. Ships up to 40 metres long can also dock on the outer side of the mole; the depth of the water is 7 metres here. The port opens in May or June and closes in October. It is also unique because it is exposed to the Mistral, causing waves.

The port of Zavala (Hvar)

The little port of Zavala is located on the southern shore of Hvar Island, near Šćedro Island. Smaller yachts can dock at the mole, while larger ones can dock at the bay. The depth of the water is 6–16 metres at the bay, and 2–3 metres at the mole.

This marina can accommodate 70 boats up to 20 metres in length. The Bora and Jugo winds can make berthing difficult, thus when they are blowing stronger, it is better anchoring at the quay at the nearby town of Kut. Komiža Town Harbour

The harbour of Komiža is in a wide, deep bay. It has 30 berths for boats up to 20 metres in length. The seabed is 6 metres deep. The harbour offers excellent protection from northern and eastern winds, but the southern Jugo can cause some waves. Komiža sailing

Marina Bol (Brač)

The port of Bol is located on the southern coast of Brač Island, about halfway between Milna and Sumartin. It is small, so it can be hard to find a free berth during the main season. The depth of the water is 6–7 metres at the entrance and 2 metres at the pier. It provides drinking water, electricity and laundry, as well as cafés and restaurants. Day 1. Split – Supetar (Brac)

16, 12 km (10, 02 mi) The first stop on the island of Brac is Supetar. Sailing southeast of Split, you arrive at Supetar. Already on arrival at the port, the three-bayed baroque church with a 35-metre-high tower stands out. Known as the capital of Brac, Supetar offers plenty of enjoyment. If you arrive between June and September, you will drop into the long-running Supetar Summer Festival. If you are interested in the history of the town, visit the Sveti Nikola peninsula, located west of the marina. There are a lot of things to see here, like a mausoleum, ancient Christian sarcophagi and a historic cemetery.

Day 2. Supetar – Stari Grad

40, 46 km (25, 14 mi) Sailing west of Brac and then turning south, you approach the island of Hvar. You sail southeastward, into the bay of Stari Grad. To the north of the harbour, next to the white cross at the top of Glavica Hill, there are great views of the city and the western parts of the island. If you love bike tours, take a short visit to the Stari Grad Plain, a World Heritage Site! Day 3. Stari Grad – Vrboska – Jelsa

31, 42 km (19, 53 mi) You leave the bay of Stari Grad, heading east. As you sail along the coast, you arrive at Vrboska. You have to turn west in the bay of the village. You can find here the Church of St. Mary of Mercy, built-in 1580. The tower offers a wonderful view of the area. If you are interested in fishing, visit the fishing museum. You can see old fishing nets, tools and a reconstructed fisherman’s cottage.

Sailing southeast of Vrboska, you reach the town of Jelsa. The Church of St. John the Baptist is located on the main square, surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque houses. In the park, you can see the statue of Captain Niko Dubokovic. If you are interested in the nearby archaeological sites, there are two of them, located west of Jelsa. Tor has a great view of the marina. In Galesnik, you can see the remains of a medieval settlement.

Day 4. Jelsa – Sucuraj

42, 66 km (26, 51 mi) You sail east along the northern coast of the island. On the way, you can stop for a swim at some beautiful beaches. Finally, you arrive at the eastern tip of Hvar and turning south-southwest, you can drop anchor at Sucuraj. It is a quiet little fishing village with gorgeous coastlines on the east and south sides of the island. Compared to its size, it has many landmarks and historic monuments from different eras. The Franciscan monastery was built-in the 9th century, the Church of St. Anthony and the Fortica fortress in the 1600s, and the lighthouse in 1889.

Day 5. Sucuraj – Zavala

40, 45 km (25, 14 mi) Heading west from Sucuraj, you sail along the southern coast of Hvar. You arrive at Zavala. It is a peaceful town with a beautiful coastline. There are no hotels or loud bars. Zavala is not crowded like the other towns on the island. The town is mainly famous for wine production. We recommend trying the local speciality, bogdanjusa. If you love nature, you can go to the island of Scedro opposite Zavala by taxi boat or a rented boat. There are beautiful bays and beaches.

Day 6. Zavala – Vis

42, 32 km (26, 30 mi) We recommend spending a day at the island of Vis, southeast of Zavala. This Island is very popular with divers due to its many shipwrecks and rich aquatic life. Moor in the town of Vis, here you will find the archaeological museum in the old fortress. You should also check out the Rdošije Palace. Day 7. Vis – St. Klement-island- Hvar

27, 15 km (16, 87 mi) Sailing northeast of Vis, you arrive at Sveti Klement. You can find some beautiful pine and laurel forests here. The shallow water of Palmižana Bay is perfect for swimming. Heading northeast from the island, you will arrive at Hvar. It is the sunniest town in the Croatian region with more than 2700 hours of sunshine a year. From the marina, you can walk to the main street where you find the most important landmarks. The cathedral is located in the main square, said to be the largest in Dalmatia. We recommend visiting the Spanjola Fortress on a hill above the old town, offering gorgeous views over the area.

What to expect when visiting Split

Split is a coastal town in Central Croatia, on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea. This makes it a popular transport hub to and from the nearby islands of Brac, Hvar and Korcula. But Split is more than just a stopover, it is a destination on its own.

A beautiful mix of old and new, Split is a great place to explore Croatia’s colourful history while also enjoying modern luxuries. Get lost in the Old Town and Diocletian’s Palace and immerse yourself in the city’s relaxed way of life. You can also climb the Bell Tower of St. Domnius for the best views of Split !

Hvar to Split by High-Speed Ferry

Travelling by ferry is a cheap and easy way to get from Hvar to Split in just about an hour.

Kapetan Luka and Jadrolinija offer at least one trip daily all year round. More trips are available in the tourist season (May to September).

Book your ferry ticket in advance during high season (June-September)

Croatia has been rising in popularity for travellers, particularly Split and Zadar. This means ferries are often fully-booked and that’s why we highly recommend that you reserve your tickets online 3-5 days in advance .

If you buy your ticket through BookAway , you can still cancel your tickets free of charge up to 24 hours before departure.

Rather buy your tickets at the port? It’s best to get to the harbour at least an hour prior to your desired departure for a chance at getting a ticket , especially during the high season. We recommend lining up at the harbour in the morning so that you’ll have more chances of getting a ticket for a ferry departing on the same day.

Prefer to buy your ticket at the harbour? In that case, line up at the port at least one hour before departure when travelling in the high season (June-September). We recommend going to the ticket office in the early morning so that you can avoid waiting in the hot sun and increase your chances to get a ticket for your desired departure time.

If you can’t board your desired ferry, you’ll have to wait for the next ferry from Hvar to Split.

Hvar to Split high-speed ferry schedule (2022)

Departure and arrival station.

Both ferries depart from the Harbour of Hvar in Hvar Town. This town is on the western side of the island.

The ferries arrive at  Split Ferry Port , located just around 500m south of the Old Town. This port is just within walking distance from most hotels in the city centre.

High-speed ferry of Kapetan Luka

Our ferry of choice is the high-speed ferry operated by Kapetan Luka. The ferry can take you from Hvar to Split in just 50 minutes.

The Kapetan Luka ferry has six departures per day from Hvar to Split during peak season and at least one trip daily during the low season.

More importantly, if you book your ride online via BookAway, you can expect a seat on your desired date and time. No need to queue at the port for at least an hour. BookAway also offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure for this route.

Alternative: Jadrolinija ferry

Jadrolinija also offers ferry rides from Hvar to Split. It’s a bit cheaper with fares from €17.50 during peak season, but also not as luxurious or comfortable as those offered by Kapetan Luka.

The Jadrolinija catamaran has several trips from 06:35 to 18:00 during summer (June to September). Outside these months, the catamaran offers only one trip daily at 06:35.

Since schedules vary, you need to first check the Jadrolinija website for the scheduled departures on your desired date.

Note that Jadrolinija operates on a full=full rule . This means that even though you book your tickets online via their website, there’s still a chance you will not get a place on the boat.

When travelling with Jadrolinija, you need to queue at the port at least an hour before your trip. Better to schedule an early departure too! If you miss the boat you have booked, you can always take a later boat to Hvar Island.

We don’t think it’s worth the hassle to wait half a day for your boat just to save a few bucks, though. It’s much better to spend a few euros more on Kapetan Luka’s fast boat that guarantees a place on board.

Travelling in winter months?

The schedules above are for ferry schedules during the tourist season. There should be fewer ferries operating in the colder months (October-March), just one to two trips per day for both Kapetan Luka and Jadrolinija.

Also, note that ferries may not be allowed to sail during severe weather conditions. This is more common during the winter and less likely in summer.

You can expect blue skies and smooth seas from May through October. Just in case your ferry is not allowed to travel for some reason, you will have the option to take the next available ferry or receive a full refund.

Hvar to Split by Ferry via Stari Grad

If you’re travelling by car from Hvar to Split, your best option is to take a ferry from Stari Grad. This town is located 20 km northeast of Hvar town.

As the oldest town in Croatia, Stari Grad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although taking this route adds an hour to your travel time, this route gives you a chance to see the beauty of this ancient town.

Step 1: Hvar to Stari Grad by Car, Taxi or Bus

When travelling by car, you only need to drive around 30 minutes northeast to reach the Stari Grad Port .

However, if you’re travelling this route for other reasons – perhaps if the direct ferries are fully-booked – you can also take a 30-minute taxi or bus from Hvar to Stari Grad.

Taxis are really easy to find, and you can get a ride with rates from €5.60 ($6).

Buses are much cheaper with fares from €3.60 ($3.90). However, their departure times are far apart (2 to 3 hours in the afternoon), so you might have to wait a while.

Step 2: Stari Grad to Split by Ferry

From Stari Grad, Jadrolinija offers several ferry trips bound for Split. The ferry journey takes 2 hours.

Ticket prices start from [custom1_price3] per person. For vehicles, rates start from €35 ($37) per car.

Ferries dock at Split Ferry Port, from where the Old Town is just within walking distance.

Hvar to Split by Catamaran via Jelsa

If you’re a foot passenger looking for an alternative route, there is also an option to take a catamaran from Jelsa. Located 26 km west of Hvar Town, Jelsa is another one of the island’s charming towns.

We recommend that you take this route only if the abovementioned ferry routes are already fully booked. The taxi from Hvar town to Jelsa can be quite expensive.

Step 1: Hvar to Jelsa by Taxi

Your only option to get to Jelsa from Hvar town is a taxi ride. Rates start from €48 ($52) for the taxi ride that is 30 minutes long.

Step 2: Jelsa, Hvar to Split by Ferry

Jadrolinija operates one daily catamaran trip from Jelsa to Split. The catamaran departs at 07:00 on Saturdays and 13:00 on Sundays. For the rest of the week, the departure is at 06:00. A ticket costs €5.80 ($6.20).

The ferry ride takes 1 hour 30 minutes, as these ferries also make a short stop at Bol before heading to Split.

From Split Ferry Port , you can find the Old Town about 500m to the north.

Transport via car + ferry is a convenient option when travelling in a group from Hvar to Split.

Rates start from €315 ($340) for a 3-seater private transfer. Divide the cost and that’s just about €105 ($115) per person. Travel time is around 1h - 2h 30m.

Bonaca Tours, Segorent, and Absolut Charter offer private motorboats for groups of eight people. Rates start from €365 ($395) for four people and €420 ($450) for a speedboat that can accommodate eight passengers.

This option is definitely more expensive, but having your own motorboat is also an experience on its own.

Travel time is around an hour from Hvar to Split city centre.

The speedboats depart from Hvar Port in the town centre. They dock at Matejuska Port , just next to Split city centre.

Hvar to Split Airport with Private Transfer

A private transfer is especially convenient when travelling straight from Hvar to Split Airport. Rates are just the same as going to Split city centre.

The speedboats dock at Divulje Port , located about 1.5 km south of Split Airport. From the port, a car will pick you up to bring you or your group to the airport.

During our ten days in Croatia we decided to spend some time exploring the beautiful island of Hvar. If you love beautiful beaches, quaint old towns and dramatic coastlines, then you will love Hvar Island.

In this article I’ve outlined everything you need to know about doing a day trip to Hvar Island from Split. Whether you choose to go on a tour or alone, this guide has it all!

About Hvar Island

Not far from the Croatian coast, Hvar Island is a very popular summer destination, as well as a must on any Split itinerary .

With its incredible beaches, beautiful natural landscapes, cute historical town and awesome food, it’s easy to see why!

This island has become famous recently for its party reputation, however even if you’re not into big parties it’s still an incredible island to visit.

You can do a day trip to Hvar from Split and enjoy the natural and historical beauty of the island, without ever seeing the party side of it, or stay a few nights and live the nightlife.

How do I get from Split to Hvar?

Hvar is a fairly small island and the only way to get there is by boat. You can either take a ferry or go on a organised boat trip.

The ferry will be cheaper and give you more freedom to do as you please in Hvar, but you will then have to pay for all activities and extras.

Tours can be a bit pricier but will usually include everything, meaning you can just sit back, relax and enjoy your Hvar day trip.

There are a number of different ferry companies that run the route from Split to Hvar. In high season there are up to 18 journeys per day, giving you lots of choice for your departure times.

The price for a one way journey from Split harbour Hvar Island is 39 HKR per person.

How long is the ferry from Split to Hvar?

The ferry takes around one hour to get from Split to Hvar. Depending on the company and sea conditions it ranges from 50 to 70 minutes.

In summer the first ferry is at 7:40AM, and the last one leaving Hvar for Split is at 9:30PM (in winter there are less rides).

You can easily take these ferries and organise your own day tour around Hvar Island. Alternatively let’s look at the tour option in more detail.

There are lots of different day tour options running from Split to Hvar. You can do tours with a speedboat, a catamaran or sailing boat, and decide what aspect of Hvar to focus more on.

I’ve listed below some fun tour options.

Best things to do in Hvar Island in one day

So what is there to actually do on Hvar Island? Why does Hvar feature on every Croatia bucket list ? Whether you travel by ferry or do a day tour, what will you actually be exploring on this beautiful Croatian island?  

We decided to do our own thing and travel to Hvar with the ferry. There was five of us so we decided it would be cheaper and more fun to rent a car and drive around the island.

I’ve outlined below some of the best things that you can do on Hvar Island if you’re going there solo without a tour.

You can use this as a 1-day Hvar itinerary (assuming you get the first ferry to Hvar and the last one back to Split).

Explore the Hvar Old Town centre

Before you go adventure off to explore the island, the first thing you should do in Hvar Island is explore Hvar Town. This is where you will disembark with the ferry and one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

The old town centre is simply beautiful. The streets and houses are built with traditional stone and have that rustic and old feel to them.

You could wander around the streets all day long, and never get tired of them. The main spots in the town that you should definitely visit are St Stephen’s Cathedral and St Stephen’s Square, right in front of it.

Admire the view from the Spanish Fortress

As you’re wandering around the cute streets of Hvar Town, head up towards Fortica, also known as the Spanish Fortress. From up here you can enjoy an absolutely incredible view.

Entrance to the fortress is 25 HKR. The fort is very well preserved and you can easily spend about an hour exploring all the rooms and cellars of it, as well as the sweeping views over the harbour of Hvar.

Rent a vintage beetle car and drive around the island

We didn’t expect this to be a thing, but were pleasantly surprised to find lots of colourful vintage beetle cars parked on the outskirts of the main square.

If you’re looking to drive around the island with style, this is the way to do it!

We personally had a bad experience since our car rental ripped us off, but don’t let that deter you! Just make sure that what you sign makes sense, drive responsibly and you’ll have a great time.

Hvar has a beautiful coastline. Even driving without a specific end in mind can be very fun. Just enjoy the wind through your hair, the sunshine on your skin and the rolling drives with their epic views.

Explore the beaches of Hvar

Driving for the sake of driving can be fun, but driving with an aim in mind is even better. Once you have your car, it’s time to explore the beaches of Hvar!

Croatia is home to some beautiful beaches, and the same goes for Hvar. We just drove aimlessly for a bit until we eventually reached Malo Zarace Beach. We were the only ones in this little slice of paradise.

There were a lot of rocks and getting in the sea for a swim was a bit painful on the feet, but the crystal clear water and having the beach just for us made it worth it. It’s located about a half hour drive from Hvar Town.

Other popular beaches in Hvar that you can check out are Dubovica Beach, Pokonji Dol Beach, and Milna Beach. At all these beaches you will find a turquoise water and a pristine beach.

After exploring the quaint streets of Hvar Town, enjoying the view from the Spanish Fortress and swimming in the clear Croatian sea, you’re probably feeling pretty knackered! It makes for a pretty busy Hvar day trip itinerary.

But there’s one final thing you should do before getting the last ferry back to Split; head over to Hula Hula Beach Bar for a sunset drink!

Hula Hula Beach Bar is located in prime position on the beach, with epic sunset views over the sea.

Hvar is a bit of a party town so even if you visit only for a day, you should get a taste of its nightlife. Grab a drink, some snacks and relax as you watch the sun go into the sea. You could even dance a little if you want!

Where to stay for your day trip to Hvar

I’ve outlined below some accommodation options both in Split and Hvar.

You can easily visit Hvar Island on a day trip from Split, and that’s what this article is about, however I don’t blame you if you want to stay longer and immerse yourself in the island vibe!

I recommend staying in the Old Town of Split. That way you will be able to easily walk to all the main attractions in Split, as well as to the ferry terminal.

Budget: Youth Hostel Marija – Hvar is known for being a bit of a party island. If you’re going for the nightlife, you will have an awesome time in a hostel! This one has a fun reputation, great location, spacious dorms and even a pool.

What to pack for a Hvar day trip

You don’t really need anything special beyond your usual travel essentials and normal outfits. However I’ve listed below a couple items that will make your day trip to Hvar smoother.

Power bank – you don’t want your phone to run out of battery while you’re busy capturing the beautiful views and beaches!

Stainless steel water bottle – save money and reduce plastic consumption by bringing your own water bottle and refilling it.

Sunscreen – I was there in September, and the sun was still really hot! Don’t ruin your trip by getting sunburnt.

Hat – Same as above, the sun is strong, you’ll want some shade for your head during the day!

Waterproof bag – Even if I’m not planning any extreme activities, I like to use a waterproof backpack when I travel to beach and seaside destinations. I’d rather be safe than sorry and ensure all my stuff is dry!

There you have it, the ultimate guide to doing a Split to Hvar day trip! You could obviously spend longer in Hvar, however if you’re on a tight Croatia itinerary doing a day trip is the best option.

You can do lots of epic day trips from Split, such as going to the famous Krka waterfalls , discovering Dubrovnik or zip-lining in the Cetina Canyon , but if you’re looking for epic beaches, Hvar Island is the one.
