REPORT: Odell Beckham Jr Rented Out Massive Yacht Known As “The Spirit of Baltimore” For Ravens Teammates Before Playoffs

the spirit of baltimore yacht

Odell Beckham Jr.’s Giants days are well behind him, but a single image has followed him for years that he cannot get away from.

In 2017, the Giants were gearing up for a wild-card round matchup with the Packers. Beckham, along with fellow Giants wideouts Sterling Shepard, Victor Cruz, and Roger Lewis Jr., decided to have a good time on a boat beforehand.

The Giants’ playoff hopes have sunk since the picture was taken.

The infamous Giants boat photo is back in the discussion this week as Odell is now playing for the Ravens.

A report surfaced this week that the veteran WR had scheduled a yacht trip after the team secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC following the Ravens taking the Dolphins to task in a devastating way to the tune of a 56-19 win.

In a tweet from Spencer Schultz: “Heard that OBJ has rented out massive yacht known as ‘The Spirit of Baltimore’ and will be taking the Ravens offensive players on it during some down time before the playoffs.”

However, the tweet is just for engagement and is completely fake.

In his first year with the Ravens, Beckham has 565 receiving yards with three touchdowns through 14 games this season.

Beckham suffered a knee injury in Super Bowl LVI and sat out the entire 2022 season. Multiple teams reportedly expressed interest in Beckham this past offseason, but the three-time Pro Bowler ultimately signed a one-year contract with the Ravens.

Baltimore enters the final week of the regular season with 13 wins and will host their division rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday.

They have nothing to play for so it remains unclear if NFL MVP candidate Lamar Jackson and other starters will suit up for Baltimore.

Come this spring, Baltimore's seafaring tourists and partiers can board a brand new Spirit of Baltimore to sail the Inner Harbor.

Chad Barth, general manager of Hornblower Cruises and Events in Baltimore, said Friday that the company's Spirit Cruises subsidiary is in the process of renovating a 192-foot ship it acquired to replace the current 145-foot Spirit of Baltimore.

The vessel isn't exactly brand new, having previously traversed the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., but it's currently undergoing a multimillion-dollar, "top to bottom" transformation at General Ship Repair near Domino Sugar's refinery. The new ship will have 30% more passenger capacity, Barth said. It will be unveiled sometime this spring.

'Report' Going Viral About Odell Beckham, Yacht Plan Is Fake

A "report" surfacing about Odell Beckham Jr. scheduling a yacht trip for the Ravens offense ahead of the playoffs has been going viral on Twitter.

But it's fake...

In a tweet from Spencer Schultz : "Heard that OBJ has rented out massive yacht known as 'The Spirit of Baltimore' and will be taking the Ravens offensive players on it during some down time before the playoffs."

This, of course, is a reference to Beckham's time on the Giants, when he and his wide receivers spent time on a yacht in Miami, prior to a playoff loss.

That didn't stop fans from falling for it on social media though.

"LAMARRRRRR!!! DONT GET ON THE BOAT!!!! LAMARRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!" a user said.

"Odell transferring the curse to the Ravens >>" another replied.

"This is an all time incredible troll job," a fan commented. "Well done."

"DO NOT GO ON THAT BOAT!!! DO WE NOT REMEMBER THE GIANTS?!" another fan asked.

"HAVE WE LEARNED NOTHING FROM THE BOAT CURSE," tweeted Stephie Smalls?

"He might want to rethink this."

"This might turn into the greatest post that this app has ever seen," said Kevin Oestreicher.

The Legend’s current voyage is scheduled to end on March 31 and will dock in Norfolk. Following the cruise’s return, passengers will be given free bus rides back to Baltimore, Carnival said in a news release. The ship can carry as many as 2,124 guests, according to Carnival’s website.

Carnival said they have informed their current and future guests about the change to the Legend’s port. On Tuesday evening, the Carnival website was not allowing tickets to be purchased for voyages out of Baltimore.

The bridge was struck by a 948-foot Singapore-flagged ship called the Dali, which lost power just before the collision, the Baltimore Sun reported. The Dali was traveling at about eight knots at the time.

As of Tuesday evening, six construction workers repairing potholes on the bridge were presumed dead, Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, told the Baltimore Sun.

The collapsed bridge, spanning the Patapsco River, has severely impacted the flow of ship traffic to the Port of Baltimore. Vessel traffic into and out of the port was suspended, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld said, and a Coast Guard report stated that the “Patapsco River channel is fully blocked.” The Port of Virginia will receive some of the diverted traffic, The Pilot reported .

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, adding that she’s grateful the President Joe Biden has pledged to reopen the Baltimore Harbor as soon as possible. “As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

What We Know About the Crew on the Ship That Hit the Baltimore Bridge

One crew member of the Dali received stitches, then returned to the ship. It’s not clear how long they’ll have to remain on board.

The crew members of the cargo ship that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge were still aboard Thursday, more than two days after the collision that collapsed the bridge and left six people dead.

Most of the crew — at least 20 people — were from India, according to Synergy Marine, the management company that operates the vessel, the Dali. Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said on Thursday that the crew was in good condition; one crew member was injured in the crash and received stitches at a nearby hospital before returning to the ship, he said.

The ship, owned by the Singapore-based Grace Ocean Private Ltd. , had just embarked on a 27-day voyage to Singapore when it struck the bridge early Tuesday morning. Darrell Wilson, a spokesman for Synergy Marine, said on Thursday he did not know when crew members would leave the ship.

Josh Messick, a chaplain and the executive director of the Baltimore International Seafarers’ Center, a religious nonprofit that seeks to protect the rights of mariners, said the crew did not have reliable internet access. His organization was working to deliver Wi-Fi access and SIM cards so they could reach family members back home, he said.

Large container ships like the Dali typically have about 20 crew members, a figure that has come down over the years as operators have sought to cut labor costs. Larger shipping companies may recruit workers from countries like India and the Philippines , where looser labor laws enable them to pay cheaper wages.

Crews’ time at sea can vary, but some voyages are now taking longer than usual: Attacks on ships by the Houthi rebel group in Yemen in the Red Sea have caused lengthy detours away from the Suez Canal, disrupting global shipping across the globe.

Typically, a container ship crew includes the captain, an officer in charge of securing the cargo, sailors assigned to the engines and handling the ship's myriad systems, and stewards who handle tasks like cooking and laundry.

John Konrad, a licensed container ship captain and the editor of gCaptain.com , a shipping industry news site, said every container ship is “unique and has its idiosyncrasies.” It’s normal for crew members to stay on damaged ships because the captain is still in command, and crew members must make sure the crashed vessel — and any potentially hazardous goods — does not pose a further danger.

“They’re making sure the ship doesn’t catch on fire,” Mr. Konrad said in an interview, adding that the crew must also remain to comply with the National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation.

On Wednesday, Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the N.T.S.B., said the ship’s cooks were working when she boarded the ship. “It smelled very good, and I was very hungry,” she said.

Crew aboard Dali all survived bridge crash ‘by God’s grace’

A director of a baltimore ministry was in touch with those aboard the dali after their ship crashed.

The director of a Baltimore ministry heard a loud boom in the wee hours of Tuesday and figured it was thunder. Then he woke up, turned on the radio and learned that the noise had been the sound of a catastrophe — the crash of a ship into a bridge that involved merchant sailors he had seen just hours earlier.

Andrew Middleton, director of the local Apostleship of the Sea, texted a seafarer aboard the 985-foot container ship Dali.

“Is everyone on board safe?” he asked at 6:03 a.m.

Five minutes later, the crew member replied.

“Yes. By God’s grace.”

Their exchange is the first publicly reported communication from a mariner aboard the vessel, which lost power and slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Middleton’s account also provides new insight into the path of the cargo ship before the crash, which destroyed the bridge — rising to 185 feet above the Patapsco River at its peak — and left at least six people missing and two injured.

“The words that ‘the Key Bridge is gone’ — it still shakes us,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said Tuesday morning.

Just before the disaster, crew members aboard the Dali alerted authorities that the vessel had lost power, which prompted a rushed effort by authorities to halt vehicle traffic and evacuate people from the bridge. That “mayday” warning is credited with saving numerous lives , Moore said, but it came too late to save workers who were repairing potholes on the span.

The Dali left the Panama Canal on March 13, arrived in New York on March 19, then traveled to Norfolk on Friday, according to the ship-tracking website VesselFinder.com. It arrived Saturday in Baltimore.

Although the Dali’s trip from Panama to the Chesapeake Bay appeared uneventful, records show the nine-year-old ship has had problems related to propulsion in the past.

In June, inspectors at the port of San Antonio, Chile, discovered a problem categorized as relating to “Propulsion and auxiliary machinery,” according to the Tokyo MOU, an intergovernmental shipping regulator in the Asia-Pacific region.

The issue was classified in the subcategory of “Gauges, thermometers, etc,” but no additional details of the deficiency were provided. The problem was not serious enough to warrant detaining the ship, according to the records , and the Dali was found to have no outstanding deficiencies after a follow-up inspection later that day.

Basil Karatzas, chief executive of Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co., said he suspected that the Baltimore disaster followed a halt in the supply of fuel to the Dali’s engine. “If there was any malfunction of gauges and thermometers looping back to the engine, [that] may have caused or contributed to the accident,” Karatzas said.

The ship — about 157 feet wide and longer than three football fields, according to MarineTraffic.com — stayed in Baltimore for three days.

On Monday, while the ship was docked, Middleton said, he drove its captain and a crew member to shop at a Walmart. In the car, Middleton said, the captain told him about the vessel’s upcoming journey to Sri Lanka — explaining that it would take about a month, because the ship would be traveling around the southern tip of Africa to avoid the Suez Canal and Red Sea, where Yemen’s Houthi rebels have been attacking ships.

“They were going out of their way to ensure their own safety,” said Middleton, whose ministry provides services for seafarers when they arrive at the port.

Employees of the ministry transport crew members to local establishments and provide counseling to those on board, who are often far from home and dealing with the strains of life at sea.

Before he left them Monday afternoon, Middleton prayed with the captain and crew member.

“God bless these gentlemen,” he prayed. “Have a safe voyage.”

The Dali left about 12:44 a.m. Tuesday and was expected to arrive at the Sri Lankan port city of Colombo on April 22, a journey of 27 days.

But then it lost power as it neared the Key Bridge. Thick black smoke began to appear from the ship’s port funnel, video showed. The lights turned off, then on, then off again. The vessel was traveling at eight knots, which Moore called “a very, very rapid speed.”

At 1:27 a.m., as the darkened ship was illuminated by city lights on either side of the harbor, members of the Maryland Transportation Authority police scrambled to respond to the ship’s “mayday.”

“Hold all traffic on the Key Bridge,” one voice said over the transportation authority police radio, according to records from Broadcastify, an open-source audio streaming service. “There’s a ship approaching that just lost their steering.”

Others on the radio announced they were on their way to the bridge or already holding traffic.

Then, one voice asked whether there were workers on the bridge.

“You might want to notify whoever the foreman is to see if we can get them off the bridge temporarily,” another voice said over the radio.

At 1:28 a.m. — less than a minute after the first warning — the Dali struck one of the bridge’s piers.

An officer replied that he would drive onto the bridge and notify the workers after another officer arrived to keep the traffic blocked. But the bridge had already been hit.

About 20 seconds later, a voice shouted over the radio, “The whole bridge just fell down!”

The Dali was traveling under the flag of Singapore. Singapore’s Maritime Port Authority said Tuesday that it was investigating the collision and providing “full cooperation” to the U.S. Coast Guard. The authority, which regulates marine services in Singapore, said there were 22 crew members on board at the time of the crash.

The registered owner of the ship is Singapore-based Grace Ocean Pte Ltd., and it is managed by Synergy Marine Group. Neither company immediately responded to a request for comment from The Washington Post. An official from Grace Ocean told the global shipping news website TradeWinds that the company is “working with the ship’s technical manager Synergy Marine to determine what happened.”

News accounts indicate that reported problems with the Dali date to 2016. That year, the Dali struck a stone wall at the Belgium port of Antwerp as it was unmooring and leaving the port. The ship sustained “hull damage impairing seaworthiness,” according to Equasis, a maritime data service created by European authorities. VesselFinder, a maritime monitoring service, reported that no one was injured and no cargo was spilled. The ship was detained in Antwerp for necessary repairs.

About three months after the Antwerp collision, the Dali was sold by its Greek owner, Oceanbulk Maritime, to Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based shipping company .

Synergy Marine Group has been involved in at least three incidents since 2018 that led to the deaths of crew members, according to investigation records from transportation safety agencies and government statements.

In 2018, a technician onboard a vessel managed by Synergy was killed when a personnel elevator malfunctioned, according to authorities in Australia, where the vessel was registered.

Required “safety barriers” were not put in place before the technician began his work, and “aspects of the supervision and communications throughout the task were ineffective,” said an investigation report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

In 2019, an officer on a Synergy-registered vessel was reported missing. An investigation by authorities in Singapore found that the officer had probably fallen overboard while working alone on a lifeboat and that it was “probable” he was not wearing a personal flotation device. And last year, a tanker partly managed by Synergy collided with a dredger off the coast of the Philippines, killing two seafarers: a Filipino national and a Chinese national, according to Philippine Coast Guard officials.

On Tuesday evening in Baltimore, the Dali was still sitting in the water, surrounded by remnants of the once 1.6-mile-long bridge. Dive teams cautiously searched for victims Tuesday afternoon, hampered by rough waters, piles of silt in the Patapsco River and the twisted wreckage of the submerged bridge.

Rebecca Tan, Sarah Cahlan, Tim Craig and Gregory S. Schneider contributed to this report.

A previous version of this article described Grace Ocean, the owner of the Dali, as a subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co., based on information from shipping data services. Mitsui says that Grace Ocean is not its subsidiary, though records reviewed by The Post show that the two firms have a longstanding business relationship. This article has been updated.

Baltimore bridge collapse

How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.

Local news | key bridge collapse live updates: temporary alternate channel, weather update, local news | a mile from key bridge collapse, a dundalk marina offers first responders a place to refuel and recharge.

Alex Del Sordo got the call early Tuesday.

Del Sordo, owner of the Anchor Bay East Marina in Dundalk, heard an employee’s voice on the other end of the line: “You’ve got to get down here.”

The worker, who lives on a houseboat at the marina, was awakened by a roar that sounded like a “rumbling train ripping through town.” It turned out to be the sound of the nearby Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsing into the Patapsco River, just seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship.

Del Sordo was at the marina by 5 a.m., and that’s where he would stay for the rest of the day, as Baltimore County firefighters, divers, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers and other first responders cycled in and out.

By water, Anchor Bay East is just about a mile from the collapsed bridge, now the site of extensive salvage and cleanup efforts . Normally a hub for pleasure boaters grabbing crabs or a crush at the on-site Hard Yacht Cafe, the 55-slip marina has in recent days become a headquarters of sorts for some of those spending hours on the water by the bridge, diving, scanning with sonar and planning for the massive undertaking to come.

Del Sordo, who took over the marina from founders Art and Tina Cox less than two weeks ago, adjusted services to meet the first responders’ needs. The marina’s fuel dock is now open and staffed with attendants 24/7, and the cafe is open for warmth and coffee from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with food service starting at 6:30 a.m. The marina’s bathrooms and showers are open to first responders, too.

A truckful of snacks, donated by the North Point-Edgemere Volunteer Fire Department, is on hand when divers, firefighters and others get hungry. The cafe also discounted meals by 50% for first responders, who have lately been able to eat for free thanks to the generosity of local businesses and customers, who donated money to the marina to cover the remaining cost of the food.

Del Sordo said he’s raised about $8,000 so far to support the emergency crews. With months of work ahead, he said he plans to offer extended hours, shelter and half-priced meals to first responders “indefinitely.”

Mar. 28, 2024: Alex Del Sordo, owner of Anchor Bay East Marina and Hard Yacht Cafe, talks about their efforts to support the first responders working at the site of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. The Key Bridge fell into the Patapsco River early Tuesday morning after a container ship struck a support column. The cafe already offered a 50% discount on meals to first responders. Community donations are paying for the other half. The marina's fuel dock is open 24 hours for two weeks. Showers, bathrooms and boat slips are also available, (Kim Hairston/Staff)

Wednesday afternoon, a Coast Guard cutter pulled up to refuel. Earlier that day, the marina’s mechanics raced to fix a Baltimore County fire boat with a broken propeller. The vessel was back on the water in less than three hours.

“It was like a NASCAR pit crew,” Del Sordo said.

His business is one of several in the Dundalk area that have rallied to help after Tuesday’s disaster, even as the impact of the bridge’s collapse on the communities directly surrounding it remains unclear.

Kimberly Scroggins, the president of the Greater Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, said the business group was in the process of reaching out to members to see how they’ve been affected. On Facebook, the organization encouraged followers to donate to the local fire department’s food drive.

Scroggins said she recently spoke with one business owner who had chosen to open in Dundalk because of its proximity to the Port of Baltimore.

“We have a lot of members who rely heavily on import and export,” she said. “The biggest inconvenience will be going around the Beltway.”

Businesses in Northern Anne Arundel County, on the other side of the bridge, face uncertainty, too.

Beth Nowell, CEO of the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, said the extent of the fallout is, for now, unclear.

“This is a devastating incident, especially due to the human extent and financial impact of this tragedy that is going to hit businesses and residents,” Nowell said. “I think this is the tip of the iceberg. We haven’t seen the immediate impact; the impact will come and it is coming.”

Shipping companies located in the county will undoubtedly be affected. So will bars and restaurants who drew traffic from both sides of the bridge.

“People who would have blown across the bridge for dinner might not go,” Nowell said.

Anne Arundel County-based customers of Key Brewing Co., a craft brewery located a short drive from the bridge that shared its name, will now have a much longer trip if they plan to pay a visit. But on Wednesday the brewery was focused on a fundraiser for longshoremen and other workers impacted by the bridge collapse and subsequent closure of Baltimore’s port, said Molly Korman, who along with her husband Nick Volk was helping to plan the benefit event.

Korman and Volk, who own Old Eastern Ink Shop, a Timonium-based screenprinting company, linked up with the brewery, which was looking for a way to help in the wake of the collapse. The couple, who have connections in the local music scene, are pulling together a concert Friday evening at the brewery, with a donation table and proceeds from a T-shirt with a Key Bridge design raising money for dock workers’ unions.

“It’s a silly little T-shirt, but the proceeds can help you do big things,” Korman said.

“When you feel helpless, you want to do something,” said Volk.

At the Anchor Bay East Marina, Del Sordo said he’s heartened by the opportunity to help.

“I could never do what they do,” he said of first responders. “But what we can do is fix stuff. What we can do is provide 24-hour fueling and a place to have a nice hot meal that for the most part they don’t have to pay for.”

“That’s a pretty cool way to support everyone around here.”

Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun says a deal to acquire Spirit AeroSystems is still on even though he's leaving

Spirit aerosystems supplies the fuselage behind the 737 max 9 planes.

Boeing 737 Max fuselages at Spirit Aersosystems headquarters in Wichita, Kansas

Dave Calhoun may not be the CEO of beleaguered plane manufacturer Boeing for much longer, but he may have one more task up his sleeve before his retirement at the end of the year — on top of stabilizing the ever-growing 737 Max mess.

In an interview with CNBC on Monday , Calhoun gave an update about reported merger negotiations between Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems, the fuselage supplier behind the troubled 737 Max 9 plane that had a door plug blowout during a January flight by Alaska Airlines. The network’s Phil LeBeau asked whether the deal was still likely to get done. “Yes, I hope it’s soon,” Calhoun said.

A family reunion

Spirit used to be a part of Boeing. The former parent company sold off its fuselage operations in 2005 to Canadian private equity firm Onex Corp. Spirit went public the next year . According to the latest Spirit annual report , Boeing still accounts for 70% of its business, though about a quarter of its revenues also come from Boeing rival Airbus.

In a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board during its investigation in the Alaska Airlines incident, the regulator found that four crucial bolts that were supposed to hold the door plug in place went missing sometime when a Spirit crew went in to fix some damaged rivets and when Boeing workers signed off on restoring the plane’s interior following the repair.

“It’s a critical supply for us, critical,” Calhoun said. “It’s our fuselage. When you go out in the factory, the first thing you’re going to see is our fuselage. It’s a Boeing fuselage. Our job is to make sure mechanics and engineers freely travel between the shop floor and the design effort, and that they can help one another every step of the way. Vertical integration is the only way to accomplish that.”
