She was recently bought by Peter Thornton, a Key Largo, Fla. resident who has homes in Bay Harbor and Detroit, Mich. Among other racing accomplishments, he set the Elapsed Time Monohull Record (Cove Island Course) in the 2017 Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race with his Volvo 70 Il Mostro , which he has donated to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation. “A yacht like Whitehawk has never been on the Great Lakes,” said Thornton, shortly after closing his purchase in mid-May, “and my desire is to show her off in Chicago and Detroit for the Mackinac Races. She is a magnificent machine that should be viewed by as many people as possible.” Whitehawk left Newport on her own bottom and last week, after reaching the Erie Canal, was preparing to meet a truck delivering her rig in Oswego, N.Y. After her masts are stepped, she will head for Lake Ontario and up the Detroit River to Lake Huron where she will stop in Bay Harbor to provision before heading to Chicago for the Chicago Mackinac Race and then back to Port Huron for the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. First things first: his racing crew and family will have to get used to the yacht’s luxurious accommodations as compared to the stripped- down Il Mostro . Belowdecks features three oversized staterooms and magnificent appointments, including a ten-sided Mandala skylight, a fireplace, and a head with a teak bathtub. Boats starting to fill Black River — including Whitehawk, Earth VoyagerBoats are making their way into Port Huron for Saturday's Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race. Harbormaster Mike Davenport said by Wednesday afternoon, about 60 boats have made the city their temporary home, including the 60-foot trimaran Earth Voyager and the 105-foot custom ketch, Whitehawk. The Earth Voyager made it to the island is less than 15 hours in the 2008 race. The trimaran is docked in the Black River near the harbormaster's office. Further east, at Desmond Marina sits Whitehawk. Whitehawk was purchased this spring by Peter Thornton of Key Largo, Florida, who also owns homes in Bay Harbor and Detroit. Officials said it is the largest boat to ever take on the race. Thornton isn't new to the race to Mackinac Island. He's competed in the race at least 28 times and set the elapsed time monohull record in the 2017 Cove Island Court with his Il Monstro. He has since donated the boat to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Sailing Foundation. “A yacht like Whitehawk has never been on the Great Lakes,” Thornton said in a statement shortly after closing his purchase in mid-May, “and my desire is to show her off in Chicago and Detroit for the Mackinac Races. She is a magnificent machine that should be viewed by as many people as possible.” The ship is quite different from II Mostro. Below deck, Whitehawk has three over-sized staterooms, a 10-sided Mandala skylight, a fireplace and a teak bathtub. “Going from a complete carbon racing machine like Il Mostro to a wooden cruising yacht like Whitehawk will be quite a transition,” Thornton said in the statement. “We’ll be mixed in with boats like the TP52s, and they’ll be running away from us, but that’s okay.” Davenport said he expects another 100 boats to make their way into the city between Wednesday and Friday afternoon.

Trailing Eagle One for 288 nautical miles, it took until the final mile for Peter Thornton’s Whitehawk to overtake and clinch line honors of the 114th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. Eagle One , owned by Tim Lariviere of Grosse Pointe, Mich. and his crew of predominantly Bayview Yacht Club past commodores, credited Thornton for a well-sailed race and earned victory. This is Thornton’s second consecutive line honors with Whitehawk . The Race to Mackinac began Friday afternoon for the Cruising Division, and Saturday for the Racing Division. Saturday’s boats began in beautiful downwind conditions for the first half of the fleet, but as a rain squall approached, snowflake-sized raindrops pelted the faster race boats as they began the 289-nautical miles (333 statute miles) up to Mackinac. Sunday afternoon and evening, the two fleets continue to make their way up Lake Michigan, sailing in moderate conditions along the Michigan shoreline. The Windward Course was raced today by all classes and featured a glorious reaching start outside Falmouth Harbour to the deep water Woodstock mark followed by spectacular downwind surf to Old Road Bluff then a long beat to Cape Shirley. The fleet headed back out to sea reaching to the Woodstock mark in big seas before finishing on a tight reaching leg to Falmouth. The entire four-race series was blessed with spectacular conditions with 15-20 knots of easterly Trade Winds throughout the regatta. This evening, the Prize Giving Ceremony will be held on the lawn of the Copper and Lumber Store in the historic surroundings of Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour. The winner of the Panerai Trophy and the glittering array of prizes will be revealed tonight. Spirit of Tradition Class Rebecca, the spectacular 140′ Frers Ketch won today’s race, the third in a row for the regatta, giving Rebecca the class win. Starling Burgess/Dijkstra J Class, Rainbow, was second in class with third being the Joel White designed Dragonera, steered by Sean Lucey. Jerry Bardoe, better known as Chippy, was racing on board Rebecca for the regatta. ![]() “I think I have been to about 20 Antigua Classics, there is no other regatta like it.” smiled Chippy. “The courses are great for these boats with plenty of reaching, as classic yachts are not really made to go upwind. Even if you are a “momma and pappa boat” you can join in; classics suits so many different types of sailors and you don’t have to have a museum piece, the regatta is all about fun. A great memory for me from this edition was this morning. Rebecca was in the starting area and we passed Elena, exchanging pleasantries, then we passed Rainbow and did the same, where in the world are you going to do that, Antigua Classics, of course!” Vintage Class A The final race was one of the closest for many years in Vintage A Class. Four yachts were vying for victory for the last race. Griff Rhys Jones’ Argyll was the race winner by just over a minute, after time correction, from Robbie Fabre’s Vagabundo II. Trevor Fretter’s was third just 4 seconds behind Vagabundo II and Mat Barker’s The Blue Peter was fourth. Blackwatch won the class with Vagabundo II holding on to second place by literally 4 seconds from Argyll. Vintage Class B Mary Rose, skippered by Gerald Rainier, scored a perfect four races to win the class. Brazilian schooner, Atrevida was second, just ahead of Richard Oswald’s Coral of Cowes. Gerald Rainier spoke after finishing the regatta. “The rating system in our class worked very well. Yesterday, after time correction, we only beat Coral by 7 seconds and today; we were less than two minutes ahead of Atrevida. Mary Rose is a much smaller boat, which meant that we could get inshore for the lifts off the land but the big schooners had the advantage of waterline length, so the differences evened out. The Mary Rose crew is such fun to sail with. I said before the regatta, the three most important things were: Don’t get hurt, don’t hurt the boat and have fun, we pretty much stuck to that plan.” Vintage Class C Leo Goolden’s 25′ Folkboat Lorema was the winner of today’s race, giving the young skipper from Cornwall, a perfect score at his first ever Caribbean regatta. Roy Boughton’s Guiding Light was second with Alexander Drinkwater’s Samsara placing third. Classics Class A Ralph Isham’s Whitehawk took line honours in every race, also winning all four races after time correction. Brian Smullen’s Cuilaun was second with Saphaedra third. Whitehawk’s helmsman, James Houston spoke about the regatta. “Marvelous, just the right amount of wind and a good sea state, chamber of commerce perfect conditions, every day has been just great. We are all friends and we work on staying focused because, as the fastest boat, we are on our own for most of the race. I think that aspect of our performance got better every race. A big thank you to John Dockery, who owns Whitehawk and Eric Nittmann, the boat captain for bringing the boat down to Antigua, especially for this regatta. Both myself and co-skipper, Ralph Isham, are members of the International Yacht Restoration School and many of the crew are members of the Mill Reef Yacht Club in Antigua. We have had a great time and we have all contributed to raise money for a school in Rhode Island.” Classics Class B The majestic schooner, Elena was the winner of today’s race, sailing the complex course to perfection. Elena was an incredible sight; her extensive sail area was expertly handled by her compliment of nearly 30 crew. However, Robert’s Soros’ Juno had won the previous three races, and being second in today’s race, secured the class win. Bonnie Schmidt and Nigel Bower’s Heron was third. Classics Class C Sea-Mester’s magnificent schooner, Argos was beaten for the first time in the regatta, with the last race going to the Klaus Roder designed schooner, Kairos. However, Argos won the class with Kairos second and Ashley Kerr’s Windjammer in third. Traditional Class Andrew Robinson’s Summer Cloud won their second race of the regatta but it wasn’t enough to win the highly competitive fleet of six Carricou Sloops. Alexis Andrew’s Genesis finished second today, the Antiguan team’s consistency throughout, secured Genesis the class win, by just two points from Summer Cloud. Philippe Fabre’s Exodus was third in class but did not finish today’s race after a collision with Eli Fuller’s Zemi. Both crews are safely ashore with no injuries sustained. Classic GRP Class Don Ward’s Frolic won today’s race by just 24 seconds, after time correction, taking second in class for the regatta, on count back from Stuart Armstrong’s Desiderata. Paul Deeth’s Petrana was second today to win the class by three points. After tonight’s Prize Giving Ceremony, the traditional end to the social festivities for the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta will take place tomorrow with gig racing and cream teas at the Admiral’s Inn, Nelson’s Dockyard. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times. Judge gives ex-Detroit riverfront CFO William Smith access to cash amid $40M theft case![]() A federal judge Tuesday extended a freeze of the assets of former Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Chief Financial Officer William Smith — including a yacht, a $1.3 million home and almost two dozen properties — until late August while giving him some money for living expenses. U.S. District Judge Linda Parker continued the asset freeze until Aug. 29, according to an order that reveals federal prosecutors and Smith's lawyer have negotiated a short-term deal to allow for the controlled sale of certain assets for fair-market value. The deal also gives Smith access to $3,421 per month for living expenses — an amount almost equal to monthly income Smith had received from rental homes he owns across the region. "Smith’s belief is that $3,421 is insufficient to pay his family’s necessary and reasonable expenses, but he accepts this amount as the current monthly permitted funds amount the government will agree to unfreeze at this time," according to an order filed Tuesday in federal court. The judge's order is the latest legal development involving Smith, 51, who was arrested in early June and accused of stealing almost $40 million from a nonprofit overseen by some of the region's top finance and business professionals and bankrolled by southeast Michigan's leading philanthropies. The conservancy’s mission is to provide access to the Detroit international riverfront and redevelop a more than five-mile stretch from the Ambassador Bridge almost to Belle Isle. Smith is charged with federal bank and wire fraud, criminal charges that could send him to federal prison for 30 years. "We support any effort by the federal government to seize money stolen from the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy," conservancy spokesman Marc Pasco said Tuesday. He also owns Duo Restaurant & Lounge, a nightclub in Southfield that has been shuttered amid the scandal and was planning to build a cigar bar near the riverfront in Detroit. The lender in that $3.3 million project said Monday it may move to foreclose on the property after Smith failed to start construction. Despite its small footprint, Duo sold more liquor ($868,051) than almost every other bar, restaurant or concert venue in Michigan last year, except Little Caesars Arena ($1,186,551) and the Detroit sports bar Brass Rail ($880,894), according to Michigan Liquor Control Commission sales data. Duo's sales surpassed much larger venues, such as Ford Field, Comerica Park and the Topgolf driving range along Interstate 75 in Auburn Hills. The flow of liquor, however, has stopped. The Michigan Liquor Control Commission has suspended the nightclub's liquor license, a move triggered when a venue "fails to keep liquor liability insurance active," commission spokeswoman Abby Rubley told The Detroit News on Monday. Smith bought the three-bed, five-bath home for $665,000 four years ago and transferred the property to his YBE Investments LLC, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said the Atlanta home has been for sale since May 28, three days before the conservancy fired Smith and eight days before the FBI arrested him. Federal prosecutors also believe Smith controls a $385,000, two-bed, two-bath condo in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Details were unavailable, but it appears the condo was built in 2021 or later, prosecutors said. Investigators learned about that property after raiding his conservancy office and finding paperwork about the condo and a company named "Alter Ego Properties LLC," prosecutors revealed. State records also show Smith has recently tried to sell the "SS Duo," a 36-foot Cruisers 35 Express yacht he purchased in May 2021. The 127-metre Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, formerly Y721, was launched and reportedly delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2023. This three-masted schooner, meaning “new beginnings” in Maori, with an expected 33000 GT and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is the largest in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands at Oceanco. Knocking Lürssen's Eos , owned by Biller and Diane von Furstenburg, off the top spot, Koru harnesses design similarities with her black hull, white superstructure and classic lines.
