The Best Halloween Music for Kids: 36 Songs

Author image: purewow author

The spookiest time of year is almost upon us, and you’ve already got your kids' costumes ready, a selection of family-friendly Halloween movies queued up and all the candy hidden in the back of the pantry. The only thing that’s missing? A soundtrack to get you and your brood into the mood. Good news: Our roundup of Halloween music for kids—complete with classic rock hits, nostalgic '80s jams and kid-driven tunes that will put a spell on everyone (tantrum-prone toddler included).

The 3 9 Best (And Only a Little Spooky) Halloween Books for Kids

1. “Monster Mash” By Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett And The Crypt Kickers

The opening of this Frankenstein-inspired track features some appropriately spooky sound effects—and the rest will just make you want to do the mashed potato. Add this 60s era graveyard smash to your Halloween playlist for doo-wop dance party vibes that both parents and kids can get down with.

2. “Halloween Sharks” By Pinkfong

If ‘Baby Shark’ is already haunting you year-round, you might want to take a hard pass on this one. Still, there’s no denying that this Halloween twist on the original Pinkfong earworm will be a big hit with the wee ones. Ghastly, isn’t it?

3. “Ghostbusters” By Ray Parker Jr.

A sassy rocker of a theme song that’s sure to get kids of all ages bopping along—and sing-shouting, “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts!”—whilst the grown-ups in the room enjoy a refreshing dose of 80s nostalgia. Win win.

4. “Werewolves Of London” By Warren Zevon

Werewolves are mutilating people in London, but we promise your kid won’t care. Yep, it’s hard to find a song that does macabre-but-joyful better than this late 70s classic. All we can say is... Ah-oooo .

5. “Theme From ‘the Munsters’” By Jack Marshall

Equal parts spooky and jaunty, the theme song from the beloved 60s TV series The Munsters is a must-have on any kid-friendly Halloween mix. PSA for parents of tweens and teens: Both the music and the show have stood the test of time.

6. “Season Of The Witch” By Donovan

It’s hard not to groove along to Donovan’s psychedelic pop hit—and it might as well have been written about Halloween. (It’s all in the title, kids.)

7. “Shake Them Skeleton Bones” By The Kiboomers

The Kiboomers are 20 year veterans of the educational kids’ music scene, so it should come as no surprise they’ve got Halloween covered. OK, there’s nothing remotely spooky about this ditty, but it’s guaranteed to get toddlers and preschoolers on the dance floor.

8. “The Addams Family Theme” By Andrew Gold

Introduce your kid to the Addams family, especially the animated film and add the enduring theme song to your Halloween soundtrack, and get ready to hear a whole lot of snapping.

9. “Five Little Monsters Jumping On The Bed” By Super Simple Songs

Your toddler is obsessed with the OG version so, of course, this Halloween spin on the classic is guaranteed to be a hit. It’s silly, catchy and totally on-theme. (The accompanying music video is also quite adorable.)

10. “I Put A Spell On You” By Annie Lennox

This number has obvious Halloween playlist appeal, but some versions are better than others for little ones. Here, Annie Lennox’s vocals are on point (duh) and, most importantly, unlikely to scare your kid silly the way Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’s singing will.

11. “This Is Halloween” By Danny Elfman

Pleasantly spooky and 100 percent celebratory, Danny Elfman’s “This is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas is the goth-pop holiday anthem that every kid needs to hear.

12. “The Time Warp” From ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’

The movie is campy, weird, wonderful and best suited for teens and up; the soundtrack, on the other hand, is a whole lot of fun for all ages. Case in point: “The Time Warp,” a wild rocker of a tune with loads of theatrical flair and dance potential to boot.

13. “Five Little Pumpkins Sitting On A Gate” By The Kiboomers

A short but sweet nursery rhyme with a festive twist, this sing-songy number is best for the littlest monsters in your life.

14. “Purple People Eater” By Sheb Wooley

This late 50s classic from Sheb Wooley has a tongue-twisting chorus so catchy that every kid in the room will be chanting it by the end of the song (and possibly for days thereafter).

15. “Little Shop Of Horrors Intro” From ‘Little Shop Of Horrors’

Another cult classic musical spoof with a winning soundtrack, the intro song to Little Shop of Horrors is a 60s doo-wop number so good that kids will bop along without even noticing the ominous warning.

16. “Witch Doctor” By David Seville

Fun fact: The sped-up stylings used for the voice of the witch doctor in this upbeat track from the late 50s would later become the signature sound of Seville’s hit show, The Chipmunks. And really, who knew an unintelligible chorus could be so catchy?

17. “Magic Dance” By David Bowie

This rockin’ dance number from Jim Henson’s Labyrinth boasts a call and reply verse that kids can’t get enough of—and it’s every bit as cool as you’d expect from a song written and recorded by David Bowie.

18. “Ghost In My House” By Jumpin’ Jamie

Family-friendly lyrics with a solid dose of irony pair well with the rockin’ electric guitar here. If we didn’t know any better, we’d think Weezer started making kids’ music.

19. “Monster Boogie” By The Laurie Berkner Band

With its acoustic guitar and cheery vocals, this song delivers on its promise—namely, to have every pint-sized party-goer doing “the monster wiggle ‘round the room.” Yep, Laurie Berkner knows her audience.

20. “Down By The Spooky Bay” By Super Simple Songs

For the littles, this Halloween-themed take on the classic “Down by the Bay” will have them giggling with glee. (Bonus: The adorable cartoon video also makes for great toddler time entertainment.)

21. “I Want Candy” By Bow Wow Wow

Presenting, the rallying cry of every single kid on Halloween. (‘Trick-or-treat’ is great and all, but Bow Wow Wow sings it better...no?)

22. “Witchy Woman” By The Eagles

Good news: The kings of soft country rock have a Halloween crowd-pleaser in their repertoire that fits the theme without taking it too far for the young ones in your brood.

23. “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead” By Ella Fitzgerald

There’s nothing scary about this swinging tune which features Ella Fitzgerald’s inimitable voice and the jazzy instrumentation that typically accompanies it. Put this one on when the party is warming up (or winding down).

24. “Spooky Scary Skeletons” By Andrew Gold

A mildly spooky sound, kid-friendly lyrics and a fun black-and-white animated video—this 1929 classic from Andrew Gold and Disney is actually just really good .

25. “This Is The Night” By The Weird Sisters

British rocker Jarvis Cocker of Pulp lends his vocal talent and dance-y rock stylings to this undeniably eerie number from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . (Hint: It’s a shoo-in with young witches and wizards.)

26. “Under My Bed” By Recess Monkey

This kid-driven pop song about monsters and boogeymen under the bed has plenty of personality and zero scares—a perfect choice for the toddler and pre-k crowd.

27. “Superstition” By Stevie Wonder

This powerful rejection of superstition sort of flies in the face of Halloween festivities . Still, it doesn’t stray from the theme—and, frankly, Stevie Wonder’s classic soul sound is so good no one will say boo about it.

28. “Graveyard Rock” By Tarantula Ghoul And Her Gravediggers

The lively 50s sound here may pair better with blue suede shoes than, say, a black hat—but it has Halloween written all over it, nevertheless.

29. “Costume Party” By The Pop Ups

Highly relatable, this ode to the highs and lows of finding the perfect costume is one that kids of all ages will sing and sway along to.

30. “Pet Sematary” By The Ramones

Originally written for Stephen King’s film of the same name, this too-cool-for-school hit from the Ramones is Halloween gold that’ll give slightly older kids a leg up on good musical taste.

31. “Something’s Brewing” By Purple Fox And The Heebie Jeebies

Mystery, suspense, and dance beats that will get little monsters moving—this kid-driven ditty has all the makings of a Halloween playlist hit for the under-ten set.

32. “Little Red Riding Hood” By Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs

Thoroughly creepy and oh-so fun at Halloween, Sam the Sham’s hit from the summer of ‘66 might tell a familiar story, but it sure never gets old.

33. “People Are Strange” By The Doors

Attention young ghouls, goblins, witches and zombies: Jim Morrison has got your number this Halloween.

34. “Ain’t No Party Like Halloween” By Secret Agent 23 Skidoo

This Halloween-themed hip hop track from Grammy award winning artist Secret Agent 23 Skidoo has more street cred than you’ll find in any other kid’s song (and yes, we realize the absurdity of that statement).

35. “Bad Moon Rising” By Creedence Clearwater Revival

There’s nothing too scary about this classic American rock hit from good ol’ CCR, which boasts all-ages appeal and a foreboding mood that’s entirely on point.

36. “Calling All The Monsters" By China Anne McClain

You've had a Disney+ Halloween marathon with the kiddo, so it's only right to introduce to this classic hit. While monsters can feel terrifying, this tune welcomes all the goblins and ghouls to the dance floor.

11+ Ghost Experiments to do at Home

If you love ghosts and Halloween, you will have a lot of fun trying out these ghost experiments to do at home.

These ghost STEM activities can also be done in the classroom, after-school programs, or anywhere else you want to add an element of science to your Halloween.

Over 11 kid-friendly ghost experiments to do at home! At home or in the classroom, learn about the science behind spook and demystify ghosts!

Ghost Experiments with a STEM Twist

The experiments on this list all include elements of science, technology, engineering and math!

But before we get to the experiments, let’s learn about the science of ghosts!

The Science of Ghosts

There is still debate among scientists if ghosts are real. While most scientists consider the idea that there may be a dimension that we don’t understand, or some other reason for humans to see ghosts, scientists have also debunked many common ghost myths.

In fact, there are 6 causes for “seeing ghosts” that scientists have found a scientific explanation for. These ideas are discussed briefly below.

Low frequencies in sound

Ultrasonic sounds, like what dogs and bats can hear are too high pitched for humans. There are also sounds too low for us to hear. Anything under 20 hertz is impossible for humans to hear. This is called infrared sound.

When these low-frequency sounds are played, studies have found that it can make some people feel unsettled and scared. Living near a source of a low-frequency sound could make you feel like someone is watching you or that your house is haunted.

Carbon monoxide

If you breathe in too much carbon monoxide (what you typically breathe out), this can cause weird symptoms like hallucinations, a feeling of dread, and other issues. In one case, a family was convinced that their house was haunted because every family member saw and heard explained things. It was found later that their house had a carbon monoxide leak.

You can read about a bunch of debunked ghost stories here.

Toxic mold can have all sorts of weird problems for humans- including making you sick, causing breathing problems, and even causing brain issues like delirium, fear, and hallucinations. Many old houses have toxic mold, which could be one reason why old houses are considered haunted more than new ones.

Wind and Drafts

Sometimes a ghost might just be a draft! Cross breezes and drafts can cause things to shift on the walls, doors to suddenly close, and lights to flicker. Since humans want to give personalities to as many things as possible, we often attribute drafts to ghosts.

Stories from others

We want to believe the stories of people we care about. So if your friend swears they saw a ghost somewhere, you are more likely to believe in ghosts because you want them to be right.

Fear is fun

Even though we think being scared is not an enjoyable experience, research has found that it releases the same feel-good chemicals in the brain that laughing and having fun does. So, we might just be wanting to scare ourselves for the fun of it!

Brain chemistry

Studies show that individuals with chemical imbalances in the brain are more likely to believe in paranormal activity, possibly because they are also prone to hearing and seeing things that aren’t there.

spooky ghost sounds physics activity for kids halloween science

This Spooky Ghost Sounds STEM Halloween Activity is a fantastic way to incorporate a simple physics experiment with some Halloween fun!

We paired a book with a simple physics activity for kids to make a spooky ghost sounds STEM activity!

Fall, especially Halloween, is our favorite time of year! We raided our local library a few weeks ago and checked out a ton of fun Halloween books for kids and had a blast brainstorming some fun activities to pair with them!

how to scare a ghost by Jean Reagan

One of our favorite new books that we read this year is How to Scare a Ghost by Jean Reagan . In the story, the kids follow steps to attract a ghost, including making scary sounds.

We found that we could indeed make scary ghost sounds with a fun, simple physics activity! You probably have all of the supplies you need around the house too!

Spooky Ghost Sounds Supplies

  • A few balloons (just in case some pop during the activity!)
  • Marbles or other small objects ( optional )

How to Make Spooky Ghost Sounds

Squeeze the hex nut through the mouth of the balloon. Make sure that the hex nut falls into the balloon so that there is no danger of the hex nut being sucked out while you are blowing up the balloon.

Blow up the balloon. Make sure your balloon isn’t too full otherwise it will pop easily. Tie off the balloon and draw a spooky ghost face on your balloon!

  • Hold the balloon in your palm with your fingers and thumb going down the sides.

spooky ghost stem activity

Swirl the balloon in a circular motion. The hex nut will bounce around at first, but it will begin to roll along the inside of the balloon after a few tries.

Once you get the hex nut spinning around the inside of the balloon, use your other hand to hold the balloon still. The hex nut will continue to spin for about 10 seconds.

Check out this video to see the spooky ghost sounds that you’ll hear!

All of my kids (even my 3yr old!) and I tried this activity and it was super fun!

We popped two balloons during the activity because of the heat that builds up as the hex nut is spinning inside the balloon, but it’s always fun to see science in action!

The Science Behind this Spooky Ghost Sounds STEM Activity!

The hex nut follows a circle inside of the balloon. This is due to centripetal force, the inward, center-seeking force on a body that causes it to move in a circular path.

The different sides of a hex nut cause it to bounce and vibrate along its path inside the balloon. This is what makes the screaming ghost sound.

If you spin your balloon too much, the hex nut will create heat inside of the balloon (due to friction!) and your balloon will ultimately pop!

Clean up all of the pieces of your balloon and try the experiment again! You can also try blowing up different sized balloons to see if it makes a different sound or use small objects, like marbles, to see the effect that the different objects have on the sound produced!

You can experiment more with centripetal force by looping a string through the hex nut and spinning around.

Make sure to find a wide, open space to swing your string and tie your string ends tightly before you begin.

Once you start spinning, you’ll feel the force of tension on the rope that pulls the hex nut toward you in the center. How neat is that!?

The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian: “The Legend of Sleepy Marlowe”

In this standalone episode of the sci-fi serial , the kids aboard the Marlowe 280 Interplanetary Exploratory Space Station find themselves haunted by a headless robot. Engineer Elias tries to make new robot heads to appease the bot, but ends up making a few mistakes along the way. It’s an homage to the favorite Halloween-time tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, and an excuse to make a robot werewolf! Ages 5-10

A Teeny Tiny Halloween

In this audiobook , listeners will settle in for a Halloween-focused story that’s fun and not too frightening. Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers quietly yet firmly emphasizes the words “teeny tiny,” while gentle music and sound effects of rustling leaves evoke the autumn night. What will the teeny tiny woman find under the huge pile of leaves? Halloween surprises await! Ages 4-6

Los Gatos Black On Halloween

The spooky spirit of the Halloween season is evoked in a colorfully illustrated book and a fun audio rendition by Maria Conchita Alonso. Imaginations will be fired up by an evocative narration of the story, which is complemented by the images. Background sounds include yowling cats and groaning monsters, and a haunting array of Spanish words fills the story as well. Listeners are provided with the option to select a track with or without page-turning cues and a track with a glossary of the Spanish terms used in the story. Ages 4-6

When the Monroe family brings a bunny home one night , they have no idea what the effect will be. But when vegetables turn up drained of their juices and the bunny is observed to sleep all day and prowl outside his cage at night, Chester the cat becomes very suspicious. How he attempts to prove his suspicions are correct makes for uproariously funny stories. The humor exists on several levels, from slapstick to literary—making it equally enjoyable (and spooky) for both children and adults. Ages 8+

Ivy & Bean and the Ghost That Had to Go

The usually well-behaved second-grader, Ivy, sees a ghost in the girls’ bathroom . Soon the whole school knows, and while some kids are interested, others are frightened into using other bathrooms—annoying the teachers and prompting Ivy and Bean to come up with a plan. All humor and drama as the girls scheme to expel the ghost with their imaginative exorcism. Ages 6+

10 Ghost Stories for Kids and Teens that Won't Keep Them Up All Night

These funny, creepy tales are perfect for telling around a campfire.

Headshot of Jill Gleeson

These kid-friendly scary tales are best told around the campfire or with the lights out for full effect, and you can tell our short versions below or click on the links for longer ones.

Each of these 10 ghost stories for kids are sure to bring on some goosebumps but hopefully not keep anyone from sleeping. So read on for some some spooktacular stories to tell all season long, and perhaps get passed on in future years.

parents telling scary stories to kids at outdoor halloween party they are sitting cross legged on rugs on the grass, one parent is in a witch's hat

The Ghost of the Bloody Finger

A little gory, slightly spooky, this is a story about a bloody finger inching ever closer to a man spending the night alone in a haunted house. It ends with a joke, however, so all that tension is released with a good giggle. For extra fun, be sure to use a sinister voice for the ghost, making it louder and scarier the closer he gets—right up until the last line, when asks for a Band-Aid. Then, he can sound as congenial as Casper the Friendly Ghost.

The Big Toe

Also known as The Hairy Toe, this is a classic story about an old woman who finds a toe in the woods and, depending on the version, eats it (ewwww) or puts it in glass jar. The tale gets creepier as the toe's very large owner comes looking for it, but the fantasy/folklore feel of it helps keeps things light, as does the ending. Children of all ages should be able to enjoy this fable without getting too frightened.

The Ball Pit

More of a play on parental worries about ball pits than a story addressing any kids' concerns (come on, do you think they fret about those things being a bacteria factory the way we do?), "The Ball Pit" is really an urban legend instead of a proper ghost story. But while it may have kids pondering the potential hidden dangers in their favorite play space for a moment or two, the silly ending will get everyone laughing.

Most kids love a good play on words, and this uncanny story about a coffin chasing a man all the way from the cemetery to his bathroom ends with the king daddy of all puns. As you tell the tale, be sure to emphasize the scary BUMP BUMP BUMP sound the coffin makes as it clomps down the street following the poor fellow. You might even want to have a bottle of cough syrup ready to hold up, too, showing what the man throws to stop the coffin. ( They'll love it. Trust us.)

Yellow Ribbon

Spooky to be sure, this long-told-tale revolves around a married couple and the yellow ribbon the woman wears around her neck, which she refuses to remove. Various versions have him untying it while she's sleeping, or the wife allowing her husband to take it off, but it all ends the same way: with her losing her head—and we don't mean metaphorically.

a woman and two girls growling and holding their hands up like claws while lying down in a backyard

This rollicking ghost story has everything kids love: pirates, hidden treasure, and rowdy, glowing skeletons. The legend goes that on one dark night, the infamous buccaneer Captain Kidd and his crew showed up on the coast, burying their ill-gotten gains on a quiet stretch of sandy land. The treasure was never seen again—except on certain evenings, when the phantom pirates sail in to unearth it once more, celebrating by singing, dancing jigs and telling tales about their days sailing the high seas.

The Lady with the Emerald Ring

A parable about greed, this story set in the late 18th-century actually has a happy ending, well...for some of the characters. The story involves a woman, believed dead, a vicar who steals her emerald ring, and the bad end that comes to him. The only ghost in this story is the one the woman's husband believes her to be, but that's doesn't mean this story isn't spooky.

dad telling scary story for little girl covering her face with her hands and sitting under plaid blanket

If you're hosting a gathering of older kids, this is the urban legend for you. Like "The Lady with the Emerald Ring" and "Yellow Ribbon," you can have fun stretching the story out, building the suspense the longer it goes. The story of a couple who park in Lover's Lane, ignoring reports of an escaped killer from a local asylum, it ends with the kind of scare that will have kids jumping out of the their sleeping bags.

The Thing at the Foot of the Bed

Short and (not quite so) sweet, this is a cautionary tale for little ones about an old man who awakens in terror at the thing he sees lurking at the foot of his bed. He takes drastic action instead of investigating, much to his regret. Both spooky and amusing, this story could help kids understand that the scary things at night they think they see in their closet and under the bed are just figments of their imagination.

Fifty-Cent Piece

Not all ghosts are scary. Some just want to be helpful, like the spirits in this story, who host a husband and wife too tired to continue their travels. The pair leave a coin as thanks the next morning, but soon hear the truth about the old couple from neighboring villagers. Eerie rather than disturbing, this story can be told to all ages.

Ghost Rider

Fabulous shadow little witch of a pumpkin with a cat and a Ghost is the perfect backdrop for telling...

Tales designed to incite a wee fright, but not a full-on freak-out.

Lots of kids love a good, spooky story. Just nothing too spooky. And you might not want your young child exposed to anything super scary. Because super scary will lead to nightmares , which will result in little hands shaking you awake at 3 a.m. because they are certain t he man with the golden arm is in the hallway closet. Fortunately, there are lots of kid-friendly ghost stories out there; short little tales that deliver just the right jolt of excitement, but which contain zero mentions of murderous clowns lurking in sewers or fathers with axes chasing their children through garden mazes.

Choosing spooky stories to share with little kids can be tricky. Your child may claim they want a blood-curdling, terrifying tale, but they probably don’t. And personally, I think it’s best to err on the side of caution. Better to have your kid walk away thinking your anecdote of a haunted wind chime was lame, rather than tell them something that leaves them bug-eyed and afraid to go to the bathroom alone.

That said, it’s good to remember that just like us, kids enjoy the thrill of being a little frightened . The haunted tales below strike a nice balance between creepy and silly. Obviously, they don’t work for all ages. No doubt your 15-year-old would blink at you wordlessly if you tried to regale them with a story of a haunted pair of smelly sneakers. But your 6-year-old? They will likely be in your lap, white-knuckling your hand, loving/hating every minute of it.

Magic Castle

Abstract futuristic background with a ruined castle; magic castle is a spooky kid-friendly ghost sto...

Part scary, part fairytale, this fun spooky story will delight young kids but leave them laughing (instead of refusing to close their eyes). A young girl and her dog encounter a note in the woods that says: Do not go to the castle at midnight . So naturally they must go to the castle at midnight, but what they find inside a coffin at the castle is more sweet than scary.

This story makes onomotapoeia seem scary. Creak is basically a series of creepy sounds that will get your child feeling a tiny bit spooked, but will also remind them that these everyday noises aren’t too scary after all. Most of the time, it’s just the wind.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything is a story on YouTube about an old lady walking through the woods. As she walks, she encounters a pumpkin head and different articles of clothing floating through the air on their own. Each time she sees one in her path, she demands they move out of her way and says “I’m not afraid of you.” That night, they all show floating above her doorstep to scare her, but she’s not scared and they become worried that they’ve lost their scaring technique. The next day she turns them into a pumpkin-headed scarecrow so that they can scare without getting in anyone’s way.

The Ghostly Maid

This ghost story for little kids is eerie without being gory or graphic. A son and a father are starting over in a new house together after losing their mother and wife. They don’t believe in ghosts, even though the house is old and creepy (you can really amp up the description of the house). You can probably imagine what happens to the duo who don’t believe in ghosts or spirits, but fortunately the ending is surprising without being too scary, and you could turn it into a friendly ghost.

Child dresses up as a ghost wearing a white sheet, the haunted is a kid-friendly ghost story

If your kid likes the idea of ghost stories more than they actually like being scared, this sweet ghost story could be a hit. It tells the story of an abandoned house occupied by ghosts who like to bake bread and throw parties. When the house is bought by an unsuspecting owner, he finds that that ghosts go away when real parties and friendships form in the house.

Just judging by the name of this story alone, you know it’s gonna be a hit among a certain type of kids (aka those obsessed with all things potty humor). This not-so-spooky story is about a man who always wears two pairs of underpants, but when he dies he’s only buried in one. So naturally, he becomes a ghost until he gets his second pair. This one will make kids laugh and it’s short to read at the end of a long day.

Fifty-Cent Piece

You can’t go wrong with a story about benevolent ghosts . This tale follows two weary travelers who are offered a room in a house for the night by a friendly couple... except they later learn that the couple’s house burned down years ago. You can amp up the suspense by really drawing this one out, and while it’s not scary-scary, it has eerie elements that ultimately highlight the importance of generosity and gratitude.

The title of this one might initially give parents pause, as it already sounds like it’s probably too scary. But rest assured, this tale of a coffin chasing around a man is more goofball than gore, and even ends in some silly wordplay little ones are sure to find hilarious.

The Scarecrow

halloween pumpkin scarecrow on a wide field with the moon on a scary night, the scarecrow is a kid-f...

This is a really simple tale, but it’s different in that it’s fun to try and tell it in the first person, as if it’s something that really happened to you. It’s basically the story of someone who builds a scarecrow , and then during a thunderstorm become convinced they see the scarecrow running away. In the morning, the scarecrow is nowhere to be found, and the person is never quite sure if the scarecrow just blew away in the storm, or if they really saw it running...

The Pink Jellybean

Yes, I know, what could possibly be spooky about this sweet Easter treat? Other than the cavities one gets from consuming too many? Well, this story is all about anticipation, with a slow build up, and then a big silly reveal at the end. These types of stories tend to go over big with the very young and wide-eyed.

The Ghost of the Bloody Finger

The title alone may put young ones on the edge of their seats. This one is all about a man who is haunted by a disembodied bloody finger . Which yes, is scary. But in the end when this fearsome ghost makes it known he’s only on the hunt for a bandage, kids will laugh with relief. Sure to be a hit with the “I’ve got a boo boo” crowd.

The Hairy Toe

Here’s another one featuring a lost appendage. It’s similar in structure to the Bloody Finger, but in this one a woman is haunted after digging up a hairy toe in her garden. She puts it in a jar (or eats it, depending on how hardcore you want to go) and the owner of said toe comes a hauntin’, demanding to know where it is. It ends with the classic campfire jump scare of pointing to someone and shouting “You’ve got it!”

The Yellow Ribbon

Woman wearing a pink dress with a ribbon around her neck, a kid-friendly ghost story

I remember hearing this one as a kid and absolutely loving it. It’s a very old folk tail, about a man who meets and marries a woman who always has a mysterious ribbon tied around her neck . Throughout their life together he asks her again and again why she wears it, but it isn’t until she’s on her deathbed that she finally lets him untie it. Her head falls off of course.

Rap Rap Rap

Another goofy tale that ends in a pun, this is the story of a woman who inherits an old house, and is then disturbed by a ghostly rapping sound. She wanders around the house, trying to find the source of the noise - rap rap rap - and discovers... a roll of wrapping paper!

The Ball Pit

While parents tend to fear ball pits for being the germ farms that they are, kids of course adore them. Which makes this story perfectly geared to the younger set. This tale of a snake hidden in a ball pit comes with a surprise twist ending that will also bring some giggles.

Sure your kid says they want a scary story before bed, but you also want them to go to sleep. These spooky ghost stories for kids strike the perfect balance between eerie and fun, and no one will be up wide-eyed in the middle of the night — hopefully.

Kid-friendly ghost story from Arkansas about a haunted house whose ghosts have a serious knack for baking. Written by Harris Tobias.

In the town of Blakeslee, Arkansas, there was a house that everyone knew was haunted. It was an old neglected house on a side street in the oldest part of town. Sometimes, the most wonderful smells issued from the house and filled the street with the heavenly odor of fresh baked bread. Whenever that happened, people would say that the old house must have been a bakery or, at the very least, the former home of a fabulous baker.

Sometimes, the neighbors would hear the sound of music and laughter coming from the empty house as if there was a wonderful party in full swing. Whenever that happened, the neighbors would look at each other and say, “It sounds like a nice party, I wish I was invited.” Whatever ghosts haunted the old house, they were benign and friendly ghosts. But even the friendliest spirits are scary and no one ever actually went inside the house. With the possible exception of a young boy being dared by his playmates, no one ever even stepped foot on the front porch.

One day a man moved into town from a distant city. He saw the empty house and asked the neighbors, “who owned it?” He was told the owner was unknown and that the property could be bought for back taxes. No one told the stranger about the house’s curious history. The man went to City Hall and purchased the property. Soon after moving in, however, strange things began to happen– odd noises in the night, weird lights drifting from room to room, the smells of baking from a cold kitchen and, worst of all, the sound of a party when the new owners were trying to sleep.

After a few days, the man’s wife declared that she could no longer live in so haunted a place and moved out taking the children with her. Before long, the man gave up as well. He was forced to find another place to live but he was angry at the neighbors for not warning him about the house’s reputation. He was angry at the town board for not telling him that the house was occupied by ghosts. In fact he was angry at everyone in town for treating him so badly. So he went to the mayor to complain and see if he could get his money back. The mayor refused saying he never misrepresented the house as anything it was not. “Just because a house is haunted,” he said, “doesn’t mean you can’t live there. The trick is making friends with the ghosts, learning to get along with them.”

So the man went to the pastor of the local church and told him his problem. The pastor said, “You’ve been in town for a month and only now, when you’re having a problem, do you come and see me? Well, sit down and tell me what’s on your mind.”

So the man sat and told the pastor about the haunted house he’d bought. Now the pastor in this village was considered a wise man, set in his ways, conservative in his manner and beliefs. He wasn’t open to new ideas but, reluctantly, he agreed to visit the house and see exactly what the man was talking about.

Bread baking in old stone oven

The pastor accompanied the man to the house. As they approached the block the house was on, the pastor’s smelled a delicious smell. “What’s that wonderful smell?” he asked.

“It’s the ghosts baking bread,” the man replied.

When they got closer, the pastor stopped to listen. He turned to the man and inquired, “I hear music. Is someone having a party?”

“It’s the ghosts having a party,” replied the man.

They went inside and looked around the empty house. The pastor sat at a table while the man looked for something to serve his guest. He found an old bottle of whiskey and poured a glass for the pastor and one for himself. They toasted each others health and drank.

“So you moved from Little Rock to Blakeslee?” said the pastor. “My parents live in Little Rock, I know the town well.”

The man, it turned out, knew some of the pastor’s relatives. They talked and joked about those things they had in common and felt a friendship growing. They were having such a pleasant time that before they knew it, three hours had passed.

They were gone so long, the man’s wife began to get nervous. “He went to the pastor’s house hours ago,” she said to herself. “Maybe the ghosts got him.” So she picked herself up and went to the pastor’s house and introduced herself to the pastor’s wife. Together they pooled their misgivings about ghosts and their worries about their husbands and went to the haunted house together. They peeked in the windows and saw the two men sitting at a table drinking , laughing and having a good time. The wives joined their husbands and found that they had much to talk about.

The laughing and talking attracted the neighbors who stopped by and introduced themselves. Pretty soon the kitchen was filled with the smell of cooking. A neighbor brought his fiddle and another brought his guitar. And just like that, there was a party. The old house filled with real smells and real laughter. It was alive again and that, of course, was what it wanted all along.

From that day to this, the old house came alive again and its ghosts were laid to rest never to be seen or heard of again.

' src=

It was an excellent story with brilliant detail and a fabulous creepy ending. As soon as I saw the title I knew that it was be awesome and by that title it grasped my attention. I have some experience of writing stories like these myself but I have got to admit some of the phrases such as ‘with the heavenly oder of fresh baked bread’ were exceptionally and truly stunning,I am sure there were more phrases like that in the story but that one for me stood out from the crowd. I also picked up a do pho nominal word which was misrepresented. I also picked up another word that wasn’t as good as the first word but I thought it was quite out standing and it was the word accompanied. This is definitely the best (10/10) story I have read in a long time and I hope who ever wrote this is extremely proud. One word describes it all really, EPIC!!! Well done!!!
