The Ultimate 7 Day BVI Itinerary

The Ultimate BVI itinerary includes a stop at The Baths.

Planning a BVI Catamaran Charter?

Planning a trip to the British Virgin Islands? Hit all the highlights with this ultimate 7 day BVI itinerary for a trip unlike any other!

For this epic trip, we did a BVI Catamaran Charter onboard a PowerCat 443 from MarineMax Vacations . The PowerCat 443 has three bedrooms and three full bathrooms! This was a perfect size for three couples allowing us plenty of privacy and plenty of room to play at the same time.

Because of our boating experience, we were able to do a bareboat charter, meaning we captained our own catamaran. If you do not feel comfortable driving the boat yourself, a captain is available for an extra charge. Heck, you can even hire a private chef if you want to!

Below you will find all the details for our 7 Day BVI Itinerary which included the famous Willy T, Soggy Dollar Bar, Foxy’s, Scrub Island, The Baths, The Bitter End Yacht Club, and a special dinner at Saba Rock!

BVI Day 1: Travel Day

  • Flight to St Thomas
  • Lunch at the Ferry Terminal
  • Native Son Ferry to Tortola
  • Customs in Road Town Tortola, Taxi to Nanny Cay
  • Arrive at MarineMax at Nanny Cay
  • Dinner at Peg Legs at Nanny Cay (MarineMax Marina)
  • Sleep aboard at Nanny Cay

We ordered provisions ahead of time from Bobby’s Supermarket on Tortola. Our groceries were ready and waiting for us when we arrived! There is a small supermarket and two restaurants at the MarineMax marina which was super helpful for last minute items and meals. There are also showers and changing rooms available to charter guests if you need another option besides the boat bathrooms. MarineMax has rooms available for rent if you do not choose to do a sleep aboard your first night. While the sleep aboard option is more expensive, it was nice to only have to unpack once and to have that extra time to get familiar with the boat before leaving the marina.

How do you get around the BVI’s when you do a BVI sailing charter ? Once you have hooked up to a mooring ball in the harbor of your destination, most catamaran charters come with a dinghy! Then take your dinghy to shore or tie up to a nearby dinghy dock.

Pro Tip : Consider booking private round trip transportation to and from the British Virgin Islands. While it may seem extremely expensive, it actually comes out around the same amount of money and saves you a ton of time!

Willy T party boat in the BVIs.

BVI Day 2: Norman Island

  • MarineMax catamaran orientation
  • Leave from Nanny Cay (MarineMax)
  • Moored at Norman Island
  • Played at Willy T
  • Lunch at Willy T
  • Played and swam by the boat for the remainder of the afternoon
  • Dinner at Pirate’s Bight

What is the Willy T ? The Willy T is a pirate ship and bar off of Norman Island. Not only do they have a dingy dock but space for larger boats to tie up as well.

What do you do at the Willy T? Well…you eat, drink, and jump! Although there are signs posted stating “No Jumping Allowed”, it is what everyone does. Young, old, doesn’t matter. You go to the Willy T, you jump! So we did. LOL.

Should I take my kids to the Willy T ? Well…that depends. At one point during our time at the Willy T, I would say No, absolutely not. It was a wild crowd that I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking my kids to. But they only stayed about an hour and after they left, it was a much more chill crowd, with kids! So, if you plan to take your kids to the Willy T, just know ahead of time, you may to have a plan B or come back another time.

Pro Tip : Need a plan B? Norman Island is also the perfect spot for swimming, snorkeling, exploring caves, and hiking!

Crystal clear water and white sandy beach on jost van dyke.

BVI Day 3: Jost Van Dyke

  • Leave from Norman Island
  • Moored at Great Harbor off Jost Van Dyke
  • Lunch onboard the boat
  • Played at Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar Bar
  • Dinner at Foxy’s

Soggy Dollar Bar is one of the most famous beach bars in the world! Soggy Dollar Bar got it’s name because people could only get there from the water, therefore arriving with soggy dollars in their pockets. They’re famous for a drink called a painkiller which consists of rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, cream of coconut, with grated nutmeg on top! Soggy Dollar has to be included on any BVI itineray!

Pro Tip : There is no dinghy dock at Soggy Dollar Bar. You either have to ride the waves onto the beach OR you can take a taxi from Foxy’s across the island to Soggy Dollar Bar. Either way you’re sure to have a great time! Also, if you need lunch options, there is supposedly a fabulous pizza place near Soggy Dollar Bar. Hendo’s Hideout is another great option.

Infinity pool at Scrub Island

BVI Day 4: Scrub Island

  • Leave from Jost Van Dyke
  • Moored at Marina Cay
  • Played at Scrub Island
  • Lunch at Scrub Island
  • Moved on to overnight mooring in the Bitter End Yacht Club Mooring Field
  • Dinner at Bitter End Yacht Club

Pro Tip : Call ahead of time to make sure you are able to get a day pass for Scrub Island – they initially told us day passes were unavailable, however they made some available when we mentioned we were 20 year Marriott Bonvoy members.

(Our original plan for Day 4 on our BVI Itinerary was to go to Anegada Island- unfortunately due to high winds and rough seas we had to go with Plan B above- which turned out to be epic as well!)

Wellness Reminder: This 7 Day BVI itinerary is jam packed full of fun! Gentle reminder to hydrate, reapply that sunscreen, and take some time to slow down. Scrub Island is the perfect spot for a little rest and relaxation.

The Bath's in Virign Gorda in the British Virgin Islands

BVI Day 5: Virgin Gorda

  • Moored at Bitter End Yacht Club
  • Ferry from BEYC to Gun Creek
  • Taxi to The Baths with Tiger Taxi (Set up by the concierge at BEYC)
  • Lunch at The Baths
  • Played at The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda
  • Dinner at Saba Rock

I have to say Day 5 during our BVI catamaran charter was my favorite day. The Baths National Park are an absolute must for any BVI itinerary. We absolutely loved seeing a bit of Virgin Gorda by land in a fun open air taxi. And if we went back and wanted to stay at a resort, I would stay at The Bitter End Yacht Club in a heartbeat!

Pro Tip : There are options to anchor off of the Bath’s instead of taking a taxi across the island, however there is only the option to tie your dinghy up to a floating line and then swim the rest of the way into The Bath’s. If you are not a strong swimmer, I would not recommend this option as the current can be quite strong.

clear water and a catamaran at cooper island bvi

BVI Day 6: Cooper Island

  • Leave from BEYC/ Virgin Gorda
  • Moored at Nanny Cay/ Marine Max
  • Lunch on board the boat
  • Played at Cooper Island
  • Return to MarineMax at Nanny Cay
  • Dinner at Peg Legs

Our original plan was to stay overnight at Cooper Island. There is a fun rum bar, brewery, and restaurant on Cooper Island. However, when we went ashore around 1pm that day, they informed us they did not have any dinner reservations available and did not take walk ins. We then planned to go back to Norman Island to finish up our week with one more trip to the Willy T. Sadly, we had some mechanical issues on our way to Norman Island which ended with a MarineMax engineer coming out and bringing us back into the marina. All in all, it was fine, we were all safe and happy!

BVI Day 7: Travel Day

  • Private boat service ( Johnny’s Maritime Services ) from Nanny Cay to BVI Customs in Soper’s Hole to USVI customs in Cruz Bay in St John to St Thomas
  • Flight home

This was the perfect BVI itinerary for an adult/ couples vacation. You could also easily do this same BVI itinerary in reverse. There’s no reason one is better than the other. There are plenty of family friendly options and things to do with kids as well. This was pretty much the coolest vacation we’ve ever been on- I highly recommend adding it to your bucket list !

Be sure to grab my quick and easy adventure captions or vacation captions to share your BVI trip on Insta too!

BVI Quick Tips & Things to Know Before You Go:

  • Food is very expensive on the islands and service is slow- just prepare to be on “island time”.
  • We ate breakfast on the boat each day.
  • Make dinner reservations for each night or you may not get in! (We tried making reservations around lunchtime on Day 6 at Cooper Island and were turned away because they were full!)
  • Make sure to have some cash handy if you don’t end up getting a BoatyBall…someone will come by each day to collect a mooring fee. You will also likely have someone come by to collect trash for a small cash fee each day. ( BoatyBall is a service where you can reserve a mooring ball each morning- but trust us, balls go quick!)
  • Always have a Plan B in case your original plan doesn’t work out!
  • Something will likely go wrong- just go in knowing that!
  • Give yourself extra time on your travel days! (Apparently Saturdays are the busiest day for leaving the BVIs.)

7 Night Sample Sailing Itinerary in BVI

The British Virgin Islands are a collection of 60 unspoiled islands that make a great 7 day sailing vacation. Catamaran charter guests can visit a different island every day. Explore the natural beauty and first class sailing and charter a catamaran with The Catamaran company.

For those considering a trip, here is some inspiration to help you get it booked now! There are a great number of ways to spend 7 nights in the BVI and the good news is they are all fabulous. Here is one example when aboard a catamaran charter in British Virgin Islands.

Night 1 - Evening Start at the Dock

Nothing beats the anticipation of arriving to the base, finding your catamaran charter you booked and getting settled into your new home for the next week. Get everything stowed, enjoy some cocktails and settle into the speed of the islands.

Night 2 - Norman Island, The Bight

It seems that the Bight is likely the first night for about 90% of BVI cruisers and it is a rock solid way to start your week at sea. It's an easy sail from Tortola and stopping to snorkel at either The Indians or the Norman Island caves is an awesome first day activity. Grab a mooring ball and enjoy paddle boarding in the protected calm of The Bight, having sundowners and watching the sunset. When the sun goes down, head to Pirate's Bight restaurant to enjoy rum punch, pain killers and one of the best menus in the islands. Cap off the day with a trip to the incomparable Willie T's Floating Bar and Restaurant and enjoy the new and bigger Willie T open May 15, 2018.

Night 3 - Cooper Island, Manchioneel Bay

After your first breakfast at sea, stop for a snorkel at either the caves or The Indians before heading east to Cooper Island. Consider exploring Wreck of the Rhone or one of the other snorkel spots off Salt Island on your way to Cooper. Manchioneel Bay and Cooper Island Beach Club (opening April 1st!) are big time fan favorites and there is good snorkeling at both ends of the bay. Lots of barracuda, tarpon, turtles, conch and stingray make this a fun place to explore.

Night 4 - Virgin Gorda, Leverick Bay

Get an early start from Cooper and head to Fallen Jerusalem for a quick snorkel before you stop at The Baths. The Baths are a must do and a great spot to enjoy lunch while resting on a mooring ball. If you have time, stop at Great Dog for an amazing snorkel on the west side of the island; not an overnight spot but there are three national park mooring balls and it is beautiful. Continue on to North Sound and head to Leverick Bay Resort and Marina. They have a great restaurant, a pool, water at the dock (closes at 5pm) and a well-stocked market so you can re-provision. This is a great stop half way through your charter, allowing you to re-provision.

Night 5 - Anegada

This will be an absolute highlight of your trip. The sail to Anegada is one of the best of the trip and well worth the effort. Leaving North Sound by 8:30am or 9am will put you on a mooring ball at Anegada by lunchtime and ready for an afternoon exploring the island. Go ashore and take a taxi or rent a scooter and head to Cow Wreck Beach and see Ann at Cow Wreck Beach Bar. This place may actually be heaven! Dinner Tip - Figure out where you are eating before you go to the beach and place your order for dinner as they need it in advance.

Night 6 - Great Harbour, Jost van Dyke

Sailing from Anegada to Jost van Dyke will almost undoubtedly be the best sail of your trip. The wind is almost always perfect and the seas will be in your favor. If you have fishing gear and a license this is also a great opportunity to catch something you can actually eat like a tuna, wahoo or dorado. Leave on the early side so you can make stop along the way; possibilities include White Bay on Guana Island, Sandy Cay or The Bubbly Pool. Alternatively, head directly to White Bay on JVD and spend the afternoon at Soggy Dollar Bar, Hendo's Hideout, Coco Loco or Ivan's Stress free Bar before grabbing a mooring ball in Great Harbour for your visit to the legendary Foxy's.

Night 7 - Peter Island / Cooper Island / Norman Island

It's your last night at sea so pick your poison as each of these islands will enable you to get back to the base on time in the morning. It is about a 45 minute trip from either Cooper or Peter and about an hour and fifteen minutes from Norman.

There are countless other "favorite spots" and it's impossible to see them all in one visit - but that will keep you coming back each year for more!.

BVI Voyager

BVI Itinerary: How To Spend 7 Days

Many people dream of visiting the pristine blue waters and cloud-like white sands of the British Virgin Islands. It can be overwhelming trying to plan a perfect getaway, especially one that involves hundreds of different companies advertising how to get from one place to another.

We are here to share with you our 5-star advice on how to explore a week in the BVIs via land and boat, with recommendations on ferries, where to stay, restaurants, excursions, car rentals, and much more!

The British Virgin Islands has four main Islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada, and is surrounded by 30+ other smaller islands and cays to explore. All of these islands have their own unique beauty and atmosphere.

Let’s take a look at how to spend 5-7 days of pure fun and relaxation exploring the islands. Before we dive into the fun, here are a few pointers on getting to your BVI dream vacation.

Long Bay Beach

Travel and Packing

Traveling to the BVIs can be overwhelming to plan, but you can break it up into a few steps. First, choose your airline. American Airlines now flies direct out of Miami to Tortola, Beef Island. However, this might be expensive depending on the time of year. Our top choice for travel is to fly direct with Delta (or your choice airline) from your closest regional airport straight to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

From there, airport employees can direct you to the taxi stand, where they take you to Red Hook to catch a ferry to Tortola. This is a very easy process! You can always book a private taxi, but it’s more expensive. Everyone is friendly in the Virgin Islands, so you can’t go wrong either way!

Christy and Husband

Ferry links are listed below, so make sure to check the schedules. Some drop at West End, Tortola, and others go to Road Town, Tortola. We personally recommend buying one-way tickets in case your plans change on the way home!

  • Native Sons Ferry
  • Aquatic Rentals BVI

You can also find private water taxis, but we recommend you save the money for excursions and just get to your location the most cost-efficient way. We noticed several private water taxis having to wait at Customs when we were leaving because the public ferry always gets access to the docks faster!

And don’t let BVI customs scare you either. Just fill out your paperwork while on the ferry, and all you have to do is wait for entry, which does not take long. Once you arrive in Tortola, there are TONS of taxis waiting to take you wherever you need to go!

Jeep rental at BVI

CAR RENTALS: Denzil Clyne Jeep Rentals is our highest recommendation. A car rental will save you so much money on taxis and give you flexibility with your vacation, even if you plan to charter a boat or ferry to a different island! Make sure to check out Denzil Clyne’s car rental company. They are fabulous.

As far as packing goes when visiting the islands, less is better! For a week in the BVIs, you may need the following:

  • Swimsuits and one cover-up, enough to have a dry suit when you want it!
  • Sunscreen 3oz. or bigger if checking bags. Reef friendly is preferable. We found it difficult to find sunscreen on the islands, as surprising as that sounds! If we did find it, it wasn’t cheap.
  • A nice outfit for each night you plan to go out to dinner. Something beachy and fun, of course!
  • A couple of casual outfits for exploring.
  • Snorkeling gear if you don’t plan on renting. Most charters provide snorkel gear, but you can’t rent it at The Baths, so keep that in mind!
  • Waterproof pouch or bag for phone and things you want to keep dry.
  • Waterproof camera. The old disposable ones are great!
  • Flip-flops are the only shoes needed unless you plan to hike. Then bring tennis shoes.
  • Water is all bottled there, so you will have to buy it unless your resort has a water station. If so, bring a refillable water bottle so you don’t have to buy bottles.
  • Cash, cash, cash. The US Dollar is definitely accepted.

Now, on to your vacation of a lifetime!

Day 1: Getting Settled

Once you arrive at your destination, whether it be a luxury resort , quaint hotel, or vacation rental, take the day to just relax and enjoy your lodging. Figure out where things are located near you so you can come up with a game plan for the week.

Make sure to check the cruise schedule as you plan your day trips to The Baths and Jost Van Dyke’s Soggy Dollar and Foxy’s bars! You want to try and avoid visiting those locations when cruise ships are in port on Tortola. See port schedules here: https://bviports.org/cruise-schedule

Long Bay

Our pick for lodging, especially if traveling as a couple or small family, is Long Bay Beach Resort. This resort is located on a beautiful, mile-long stretch of soft sand and is just a short walk to the famous Smuggler’s Cove .

You’re greeted with welcoming smiles and a delicious Rum Punch! They also have fabulous non-alcoholic options as well. The rooms are beautiful, clean, and simply perfect. We recommend you book the beachfront rooms that are directly on the ocean. Bottom and top floor rooms are dreamy any time of day.

Make sure to utilize their paddle boards and explore the ocean even closer! We saw sea turtles while paddleboarding out from the resort! The beach cabanas are so relaxing for a morning or afternoon read with a delicious cocktail in hand! Relax and just enjoy Island Time!

Tropical Fusion Restaurant Meal

Dinner recommendations for your first night would have to be 1748 at Long Bay or Tropical Fusion, which is located right next to Long Bay.

Day 2: Exploring Virgin Gorda

The driving factor of visiting The Baths was avoiding crowds, if possible. On your second day, you can spend a day on Virgin Gorda without cruise traffic! Wake up early and get to the Road Town Ferry by 8:30.

From there, take the 9 am ferry to Virgin Gorda, where we recommend you rent a car for the day to really experience this beautiful island. Speedys is great and close to the ferry dock. The Speedys taxi can take you directly to your car.

Swimming at Baths

From Speedys, go straight to The Baths, where you can spend a couple of hours walking through the breathtakingly beautiful caves and snorkeling the pristine blue waters surrounding this national park.

Take a waterproof camera pouch and some money with you! There are fun spots to shop and grab some food and drinks in Virgin Gorda once you finish touring the caves.

Christy Husband at Baths

Once you’ve had a blast exploring The Baths, make sure to grab a cold drink to take to Spring Bay . It’s right down the street from The Baths and very worth the time to check out! Stay for a few minutes or a few hours! Crowds do not find this perfect bay nearly as much due to no beach bars. Just sand, water, boulders, and relaxation.

Spring Bay

Leaving Spring Bay, head across the island for lunch or just a drink at Hog Heaven and a chance to view a few of the smaller islands from above, including Saba Rock, Mosquito Island, Necker Island, and Bitter End.

This casual BBQ restaurant is a perfect spot to recharge. If you want to see the Virgin Gorda sign, look down the mountain to the left while standing on the Hog Heaven deck. You can drive there as well, of course!

Savannah Bay

When traveling back across the island toward the ferry, you need to stop at Savannah Bay . This breathtaking, sandy-bottom beach is absolutely perfect for an afternoon swim! There are no beach bars here either, but make sure to bring your snorkel and mask for great snorkeling! You can also see from one side of the island to the other while traveling to the bay. The waters are usually calm here too.

To end your day on Virgin Gorda, check out Coco Maya, a fabulous beachfront restaurant with delicious food and drinks. The atmosphere is like no other. Don’t forget to check your return ferry schedule before staying too long! There are late-night ferries back to Tortola on certain nights of the week.

Day 3: Beach Hopping and Shopping

Now it’s time to explore Tortola and the many beautiful beaches! Again, it’s worth renting a car, even if you only rent it for one day to tour this beautiful island. Start out on the West End at Sopers Hole Marina and have breakfast at the best coffee spot around, Omar’s Coffee House.

Shop around at the small shops and take a tour of one of the beautiful catamarans at the dock! Who knows, you may even decide to charter one for the day! Then, head out on the coastal road to Road Town and do a little shopping at the local tent vendors along the bay.

Flamingo at Josiah's Bay Salt Pond

Continue heading around the island to Josiah’s Bay, where you can see flamingos in the salt pond on the way to the bay! Ignore the smell of the salt pond, and once you walk out onto the beach of Josiah’s Bay, the smell will be completely gone! There is a great little beach restaurant here as well to have lunch! This is more of a surfer’s beach, so the waters may not be calm for swimming here.

Then, if you are adventurous and ready to walk some more, continue on to Mount Sage for a hike. On your way back toward the West End, stop at Cane Garden Bay . This is one of the best beaches for a sunset view! Indigo House is a great tapas and drink spot for doing this.

Cane Garden Bay

Make sure to make a reservation, though. If you haven’t tried Bananakeet yet, this is another great spot for sunset! Instead of being on the beach like Indigo House, Bananakeet is nestled on the cliff for an outstanding view!

End your evening with a cocktail at the Long Bay bar on the beach. Not a bad sunset here as well!

Day 4: Relaxing at Smuggler’s Cove

By this point, you are probably ready to relax and recharge. Turn your alarms off and take your time getting out the door. Once you’re ready, enjoy a sit-down breakfast at Long Bay with a fabulous cup of coffee or a mimosa.

Floating in water at Smugglers Cove

Then, head on over to Smuggler’s Cove for the day! This is the best beach to hang out for the entire day. Two wonderful beach bars and options for chairs make it easy to stay all day long! Once you are finished swimming, snorkeling, and reading your favorite book, visit the Sugar Mill for dinner!

Day 5: Boat Excursion

One of the best ways to see the islands is via boat or sailing. For your fifth day on the British Virgin Islands, you can choose to find a catamaran company to sail the seas more leisurely or one of the many speedboat options to travel in style and fast!

Speeedboat

The options are plentiful by boat, which is why many people choose to charter catamarans for their entire vacation. Read this guide on how to plan a sailing trip for the BVI . Here is what you can explore in just one day on a high-speed boat.

This specific tour pictured above was through a private charter captain named Antony Nelson with Maldiv Charters. This captain has been a captain for 25+ years in the islands and knows all the hot spots to stop! There are many other private, highly-rated charter companies as well, but there’s nothing like having a “local” take you around the islands.

Start by heading to Scrub Island and snorkeling at one of the most beautiful reefs. Then, head on over to Saba Rock for a fabulous cocktail and tour one of the most unique islands in the BVIs.

Bitter End Yacht Club

Next, hop on over to Bitter End for another cocktail or just a dip in the ocean at their quaint beach. After this amazing start to your day, you can then head to Norman Island, where the lunch is delicious, and swimming is fabulous!

You can also hop on Willy T’s for a cocktail and high jump into the crystal blue waters! After Norman, your captain can take you on over to Jost Van Dyke to enjoy the famous Soggy Dollar and Foxy’s bars, along with many other options for eating and drinking.

Sandy Spit

White Bay is a beautiful white sand beach with great swimming. If you are lucky and have time, you may also get to take a peek or swim at Sandy Spit and Sandy Cay, two of the smallest, most idyllic islands in the BVIs.

All of this is only doable in a speedboat, so please keep that in mind when choosing your vessel excursion. If you are a snorkeling fan, make sure to ask your captain to take you to The Indians and The Caves, which are some of the best snorkeling spots in the British Virgin Islands.

Sandy Cay

Once you’ve made your way back to the resort after a long day, try eating somewhere close to your lodging so you don’t feel rushed to make a reservation. Omar’s in Soper’s Hole is great, or relax at 1748 Restaurant at Long Bay Beach Resort.

Day 6: Visit Anegada

Cow Wreck Beach

If you’re on a sailing adventure, you can easily sail on over to Anegada or simply take a ferry from Tortola or Virgin Gorda to the Anegada harbor at Setting Point.

At Anegada, you can visit Cow Wreck Beach , an isolated beach on the west end of the island. If you want to give horseback riding a try, you can also visit the Francis Family Farm that’s quite close to it. End your beach trip with a stop at the Tipsy by Ann beach bar.

Day 7: Heading Home

Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend your last day visiting the other beaches or in St. Thomas before you board the plane. It may be worth finding accommodations in the USVI for a day to get to explore those beautiful islands too.

Usually, travelers wake up to catch a ferry back to St. Thomas with time to spare. We recommend you get to St. Thomas, USVI, 3+ hours before your flight if your ferry is going to Red Hook. This will give you time to taxi back to the Cyril E. King Airport.

Keep in mind you will most likely be stopping in St. John for Customs. If you get to St. Thomas and have extra time, we recommend you leave your luggage at the ferry desk and grab a taxi to see Magen’s Bay on St. Thomas!

Duffys Love Shack in USVI

Another great spot is Duffy’s Love Shack! It’s a walk from the Red Hook ferry station. You can also walk around the ferry port and shop for those last-minute souvenirs. Just keep in mind most of them will say St. Thomas, so try to get souvenirs while in the BVIs for a more personal touch.

All in all, your trip to the BVIs will be one for the books. No matter what you decide to do or where you decide to stay in the BVI, just remember to relax and soak in the views and vibes because these islands are one of a kind!

BVI Sample Itinerary

The best bvi luxury yacht charter destination in the caribbean.

The British Virgin Islands are hailed as the best sailing yacht destination in the Caribbean, and arguably the whole world. The consistent trade winds, year-round warm weather, and line of sight sailing make the islands ideal for your next BVI charter vacation. With dozens of unspoiled islands and cays, beautiful white sand beaches, bountiful marine life, and unique, relaxed island culture, make this the year you set sail in the British Virgin Islands.

Guests enjoy delicious island cuisine right next to their BVI luxury yacht charter.

Sample Itinerary for BVI Charter Guests

With their BVI boat charter anchored nearby, a mother and son snorkel in crystal-clear waters.

Sail to Norman Island for your first night aboard. Hook a mooring ball, lower the dinghy in the water, and begin the exploration of this hidden treasure of an island. Dinghy around the point to the Caves where there are three caves at water level at the base of a cliff. The afternoon light makes this an ideal snorkel stop. Next, make your way over to Pirates Bight, a family-oriented beach bar, for a late lunch and enjoy a frozen drink to cool you off. Afterward, head back to your charter boat and take advantage of all the water toys you have onboard your luxury yacht. Enjoy an evening of adventure and step aboard the infamous Willy T where you can enjoy a night of dancing, local island drinks, and tons of fun.

For the early birds, plan an early morning hike to see the pristine vistas as the sun rises, then head back to the boat for a leisurely breakfast. Afterword, make way for some stellar snorkeling at The Indians. The amazing rock formations rise and descend roughly the same fifty feet above and below the water surface, which form abundant coral gardens, a 15-foot tunnel, lots of fish and an underwater cavern. Follow up that dive with another incredible dive off the wreck of the Rhone located just off Salt Island. After your underwater experience, tack back up the Sir Francis Drake Channel and head to Cooper Island. Remember to grab your overnight mooring ball as the balls are somewhat limited. Swim over to Cistern Point for more spectacular snorkeling or simply relax on the beach by the bar at the Cooper Island Beach Club while your luxurious yacht charter awaits your next adventure. Don’t forget to reserve your overnight mooring with BoatyBall.

A most spectacular Caribbean sunset view from Cooper Island Beach Club in the BVI.

Get an early start and make your way over to the Baths. Grab a National Parks Mooring and dinghy into the beach. Note that you can no longer take your dinghy onto the beach as it is roped off. You will have to swim to the beach area from the dinghy line. Make sure to pack a dry bag to keep your camera and other items free from water as well as your National Parks Permit along with the admission fee. Plan to spend your full 90 minutes making your way through the tunnels, caves, and crystal-clear water pools through the maze of massive boulders. Make your way over to Devil’s Bay beach for a refreshing swim. Following that, hike up to the top of the Baths to savor a scenic lunch with the most amazing 360° views of the BVI. Hike back down to the beach and head back to your luxuriously appointed yacht. Pull up anchor and navigate your way over to Leverick Bay for the night. Secure a mooring ball or make reservations for a space on the dock. This marina has it all – fresh water, ice, fuel, showers, laundry facilities, spa, shopping, provisioning, garbage disposal, water sports, Wi-Fi, and food aplenty.

Days 4 & 5

Experience an exhilarating sail to the low-lying coral island of Anegada. Keep an eye out for friendly dolphins and whales along your journey. Once you arrive at port, be sure to make a dinner reservation and place your order no later than 4pm for a lobster dinner! Then, head off to one of the secluded beaches like Loblolly Bay or our favorite, Cow Wreck Beach. Spend an extra day here in Anegada and enjoy the beaches; rent a scooter, search for pink flamingos, grab your snorkel gear, or even try bonefishing, one of the most sought-after shallow water game fish in the world. Other options include taking a private water tour to explore Conch Islands while learning all about Anegada, visit the shark sanctuary, the reptile sanctuary, or go horseback riding on the beach!

Watch friendly schools of dolphins swim alongside while sailing your BVI sailing charter between BVI islands.

Enjoy a nice downwind sail toward Jost Van Dyke. This will most likely be your longest sail, so break it up with a late morning stop at The Dogs for amazing snorkeling amongst the blue tang, parrotfish, and butterflyfish. Or further on you can take a break at Monkey Point on Guana Island. The snorkeling is stunning here, with so many other types of fish to view: yellowtail snappers, grunts, jacks, turtles, and large tarpon. However, pelicans diving for their next meal remains the best show that Mother Nature has to offer. Enjoy a quick lunch and continue to Great Harbor on Jost Van Dyke, home to Foxy’s Tamarind Bar, unforgettable Corsairs, and famed Tipsy Shark, you’ll find their phone numbers and links in your boat folder aboard your vessel. You will also find the only floating spa, Ocean Spa, in the entire BVI at Great Harbor. Reserving an overnight mooring ball with BoatyBall is a must at this location as they are quite limited.

Enjoy a tasty breakfast aboard your boat, then, navigate your way by dingy over to the famous Soggy Dollar beach bar, in White Bay for a world-famous Painkiller. Enjoy the day at the beach and then head to Peter Island. Great Harbor at Peter Island is perfect for your last night as it is quiet, picturesque, and speaks volumes about a Caribbean charter experience. On the water’s edge of Great Harbor, you’ll find Oceans Seven bar and restaurant, offering guests delicious local delicacies for lunch and dinner.

A Waypoints’ yacht charter guest enjoys fresh-brewed coffee on the trampoline, overlooking Peter Island in the distance.

After breakfast, you will have time to squeeze in one more snorkel adventure, surrounding yourself with fascinating high-spirited marine life in the crystal-clear waters of Great Harbor. Taking a snorkel or one last stroll on the beach is the perfect way to end your trip before you set sail to return to the best marina in Nanny Cay, aboard your private yacht charter.

Akasha Crewed Catamaran BVI Charter

Relax into the BVI rhythm as you set sail to Norman Island, which is just over an hour away. Snorkel at “The Caves” and discover the wonders found below the turquoise BVI waters. You can anchor in the Bight for a long, beautiful hike in the afternoon followed by a spectacular sunset and delightful cuisine prepared by your chef. If you don’t want the day to end there, then head to Willy T’s floating bar – an old sailing boat – where you can dance until the early hours and enjoy some fabulous shooters!

Day 2: Norman Island, Peter Island & Cooper Island

BVI Crewed Catamaran Lagoon 560

Begin the day with a short sail to “The Indians”, a collection of rocks that resemble an Indian Headdress, for some superb scenery and some amazing snorkelling or diving. Sailing on to Peter Island, you will discover Deadman’s Bay, an ideal spot for a picnic on the long white sandy beaches or make a splash with the water toys while keeping an eye out for the sea turtles you’re sharing the azure waters with! After a day in the water, sail over to Haulover at Cooper Island to see a spectacular coastline, easily explored by kayak or paddleboard. Here, you can gaze out at another beautiful sunset whilst dining on local cuisine, and perhaps a few rum cocktails from the largest selection of Rum in the BVI!

Day 3: The Wreck of the Rhone, The Baths and Virgin Gorda

The Baths,Virgin Gorda - BVI Itinerary

After an exotic Caribbean breakfast, backtrack to the far end of Salt Island to the Wreck of the Rhone National Park where, below the waves, you will discover a huge sunken ship that makes an exciting diving and snorkeling site! Once you’ve had your fill of shipwrecks, you can sail for the famous “Baths” – a 40-foot rock formation at the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda where you can follow a path through the rocks and splash around in the rock pools.

After having a good soak, you can hike up to the Top of the Baths restaurant and bar for refreshing drinks. Hop back on board and cruise along the coastline of Virgin Gorda. You may wish to stop off at one of the stunning beaches before anchoring for the night in a well-protected harbor thanks to the surrounding reefs and islands including Richard Branson’s Necker Island.

Day 4: Virgin Gorda to Anegada

Anegada BVI Itinerary

The North Sound Virgin Gorda is a boater's paradise; you will find several beautiful anchorages and some of the finest resorts and restaurants in the region. It is the perfect place to make the most of your onboard water toys – so why not get out on the water and try some tubing or waterskiing?

On your one-tack sail up to Anegada , you will pass by Richard Branson's exclusive Necker Island, before heading ashore for an extraordinary lobster dinner. Quite different from the other BVI islands, Anegada is composed entirely of coral, and it is known for excellent snorkeling on its reefs and long, white beaches. Horseshoe Reef is a spectacular spot to snorkel or dive and take in the magnificent underwater sights that stretch for miles!

Day 5: Anegada to Little Jost Van Dyke

bvi yacht charter, bvi charter guide, bvi boat rental,British Virgin Islands

Loblolly Bay is a heavenly stretch of deserted beaches that will provide you with another level of relaxation. Here you can indulge in sunbathing and lounging on the white sandy beaches and explore the underwater sea life on the beautiful reef. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the famous pink flamingos on the north side of Anegada ! There are also often sightings of whales and dolphins on the way up to Little Jost Van Dyke, so be sure to take your camera with you! Once you arrive at Manchioneel Bay, make sure you lookout for the abandoned bar that is tended by a scarecrow - this is the ideal spot for a barbeque and some moonlit dancing in complete privacy!

Day 6: Little Jost Van Dyke to Sandy Spit and White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

bvi yacht charter

On the sixth day of your luxury yacht charter, you will find the Bubbling Pools, a natural bubbling Jacuzzi! You can also enjoy a spot of snorkelling at Sandy Spit, the beautiful deserted island, and later onward to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. In the evening you can head to Corsairs, one of the best restaurants in the BVI that serves a wide array of local fish and meats and is extremely popular with the locals! And lastly, of course, you won't be able to avoid spending a couple of hours dancing at the world-famous Foxy's Bar and meeting the locals.

Day 7: Soggy Dollar and Foxy's Bar, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke to the Bight, Norman Island

BVI Yacht Charter Lagoon 560

On your final day, you will wake up to the peace and beauty of one the world’s most beautiful beaches: White Bay. Here, it is a tradition to go snorkelling to search for the "soggy dollars" people have lost on the swim back to their boats! After this, you can walk to the end of the beach and climb the hill to get a magnificent view of the White Bay panorama. Lastly, try the requisite "Painkiller" drink at the renowned Soggy Dollar Bar as you watch boats cruising by. Alternatively, head to the lively Foxy's Bar for a couple of cocktails as you sit back and relax on the pure white sand. In the late afternoon, we recommend you start the sail back to the Bight, Norman Island in order to get to Road Town by noon the next day.

Day 8: Return to Road Town, Tortola

Back to the BVI

Why not make the most of your final moments in paradise and cruise around the point to Privateer Bay on your final morning? Here is the ideal spot for you to have one last crack at snorkeling, waterskiing, paddleboarding or any other water sports you have picked up over the week. Finally, you'll have a beautiful sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Road Town and then it is time to say your goodbyes! All good things come to an end, but it really will have been a holiday of a lifetime; you will want to come back year after year!

Let the Adventure Begin!

No matter where you begin your BVI journey, follow the island itinerary below clockwise and you will find your origin at Nanny Cay. Trust us, these are our tried and true recommendations to make your trip absolutely unforgettable.

BVI ITINERARIES Let the Adventure Begin!

After completing boat and chart briefings, check to make sure you have everything on board you need for your cruise.  Stock up on any last minute provisions…don’t forget the ice!

Take a mooring ball on the south side of the Bight where waters are the calmest which will be a perfect spot for your first night on charter.

Pick up a National Park buoy and enjoy the wonders of the coral reef and its colorful inhabitants (don’t forget to look for treasure!). The Bight, Norman Island is rumored to be the site of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous novel, ‘Treasure Island’.

Plan to dine and drink at the “Pirates Bight” Restaurant ashore, which serves great food in a contemporary beach setting. If it’s peace and quiet you crave instead, tonight would make a great dinner aboard your boat pending you provisioned ahead for the meal.

Norman Island makes for your first souvenir stop in the BVI at the Pirates Gift Shop, make sure you check the hours before you go as the shop is not open late.

Be sure to check the restaurant’s event schedule as they often have live music you won’t want to miss.

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072032/theindians.jpg

After enjoying morning coffee in the Bight as you watch your first sunrise from the flybridge of your charter yacht, head a short distance to the Indians where you can pick up a National Park Trust mooring buoy.

The spectacular Indian Islands are considered to be some of the best snorkeling in the British Virgin Islands, especially since the hurricanes of 2017. These tall rock formations, named for their resemblance to Indian headdresses, are home to an amazing marine life well worth the time to stop and snorkel. Get your underwater cameras ready…the Indians are brimming with beautiful coral and vibrant sea life.  You might even get lucky and see a meandering sea turtle or two.

Note: The seas here can sometimes be choppy which could be a challenge for some snorkelers. If that is the case, you might want to consider stopping at the Indians on Day 1 on the way to the Bight or the morning of Day 8 before heading back to Nanny Cay if the weather seems calm.

DAY TWO (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072030/peter-island-1.jpg

Moor along the southern shore of Great Harbour for the night.  Great Harbour is a deep, but well-protected bay with an easy, wide open approach.

Navigation Tip: If no moorings are available at Great Harbour, the eastern shore or the southeastern side of the harbor have the best anchoring.

Note: Peter Island is also home to the world-renowned Peter Island Beach Club and Spa. Unfortunately, the resort suffered major damage during hurricane Irma and no further announcements have been made as to a when they will reopen.

Great Harbour is the new home to the new and improved William Thornton Floating Bar and Restaurant… a must stop for most charter guests.  Just keep in mind that this is a new location for the ‘Willy T’ and there are a limited number of mooring balls in the harbor.  It is advisable to arrive by early afternoon if you plan on catching a mooring there for the night.  If you are looking for the biggest party spot in the BVI, the Willy T is it!

Note: It might be wise to avoid the Willy T on Sunday evenings.  The locals tend to inundate the ship and the party can get out of hand.

Dinghy to Little Harbour on Peter Island for a quiet afternoon of snorkeling and exploring.  Little Harbour is one of the most picturesque anchorages in the British Virgin Islands.

Note: It is also a protected night anchorage for those seeking a more private, quiet evening than that offered in Great Harbour.

Dock your dinghy and go ashore exploring.  There is an old abandoned customs house which is set in the brush just behind the beach area.  You should find a trail that leads from the beach up to the house if it’s not too overgrown.

Head back to Great Harbour for just a bit more snorkeling along the reef which attracts an abundance of marine life.  There is also good snorkeling around the dock in front of the Oceans Seven Beach Club.

For those looking for a more relaxed dining experience, Oceans Seven Beach Club, located on the west end of Great Harbour, is rumored to be reopening by late 2018.  Not only does it offer wonderful seaside dining, but it is also a great location for family style watersports.

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072029/rms-rhone.jpg

There are limited moorings available at Cooper Island so we’d recommend arriving early and using your RIB or dingy to explore. Once anchored, guests are free to roam for the day.  Here are some suggestions…

From Cooper Island your divers and snorkelers can dingy over to the Wreck of the Rhone and Salt Island, depending on the weather.

Note: We highly recommend upgrading to a RIB as this body of water can be choppy but it’s best to note the seas along the way. For more official dive accommodations, there is a Dive Shop on Cooper Island that can assist you.

Navigational Tip: We don’t recommend mooring your yacht at the Rhone on most days. It’s very choppy and those staying aboard the yacht could have a rough time while you wait for divers. For snorkelers trying to get a glimpse of the wreck from the surface, we’d highly recommend snorkeling in the afternoon on sunny days.  The sunlight helps snorkelers to see more of the Rhone from the surface.  There is a dingy line at the Rhone located at the shallower part of the wreck.

Salt Island just to the west is a deserted island but fun to explore.  Things to look for…check out the salt ponds and the memorial wall commemorating the sailors of the Rhone in the cemetery. It’s also a great place for a hike around the island for those itching to walk.

Note: We highly recommend having sneakers to go ashore here.  The terrain is a bit rough and there is quite a bit of sea glass.

After a full morning of exploring, relax on the sandy, white beach of the Cooper Island Beach Club where you’ll also find a newly expanded Rum Bar, Microbrewery, Boutique, and Gourmet Coffee Shop.

Be sure to make dinner reservations at the Beach Club’s exquisite restaurant for sunset….the most romantic time to enjoy their Caribbean cuisine.

Note: Reservations are recommended year round but are essential in peak season.

DAY FOUR (PART I)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530072028/baths-virgin-gorda-1.jpg

No anchoring is allowed at the baths so we’d recommend picking up a day-only mooring ball at the north side of the Devil’s Bay.

Note: The closer you can moor to the shore, the calmer the water will be.

Take your dinghy into shore to explore the magnificent boulders of The Baths.  There is a dingy line to secure your dingy offshore and a swim line for any of your guests that need help getting to shore.

Natural pools and cave-like formations with gleaming natural light that seem to go on for miles, welcome you and your guests ashore.  Make sure to take a camera as there are excellent photo opportunities for your group.

Have an early lunch at the Burger Shack on the beach before it gets too hot…and too crowded!

You’ll certainly want to buy souvenirs T-shirts here at the Baths, but make sure you have a wet bag as the only way back to the dingy is to swim.

Note: The T-shirt shop at the top of the Bath is the best in the BVI but it’s a long hike up the trail…you might want to come back later by car for that one.

While your guests are finishing up lunch and shopping, one or two of you can weave back through the trails to Devil’s Bay to grab the dinghy. Pick everyone else up at the end of the swim line at the Baths. It will save them having to make their way back through the entire trail.

DAY FOUR (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092043/leverick-bay-1.jpg

Leverick Bay Resort is a full-service marina with an option to anchor, moor or dock. We recommend docking so you can take full advantage of this provisioning opportunity. Services include ice, water, fuel, showers, electricity, trash disposal, and laundry.

Relax around Leverick Bay Marina’s 50′ freshwater pool while indulging in the fine foods and beverages available at the Jumbies Beach Bar. It’s a perfect way to meet friends!

Once ashore you can take advantage of all of the amenities that Leverick Bay has to offer,  but certainly, plan on a relaxing dinner at their upstairs restaurant overlooking the North Sound while you think about your next day’s activities.

Leverick Bay hosts a wonderful watersports recreation center where you can rent sunfish, small sailboats or kayaks, experience flyboarding, or catch a ride on a jet ski.  They even have towable rentals in case you forgot to provision them for your charter. Spend the day on the water!

Contact the BVI Snuba and set up an excursion for the whole family.  This amazing underwater adventure is a cross between scuba diving and snorkeling but requires no previous certification or experience.  Just a comfort in water with basic swimming skills is all that you need for a day of fun!

For the fishing enthusiasts aboard, Leverick Bay marina provides services that can arrange a fishing tour for the day. The North Sound lies just 15 miles south of the east Anegada drop, considered to be a prime fishing spot in the Caribbean.

And don’t worry. If you land that big tuna you have always wanted to catch, they even have facilities for cleaning your fish. Not only that but they will even cook it for you!

Pamper your guests with a day at the spa! Enjoy a variety of treatments ranging from massage and facials to nails and hair services. A great way to enjoy the luxurious side of the BVI!

Their professional therapists are even available for onboard services.   Contact the spa for reservations and availability.

Take the dinghy towards Oil Nut Bay on the northeast tip of Virgin Gorda and snorkel “The Guns” in the Eustatia Sound on the east side of Deep Bay. There you’ll find old cannons covered in coral reef just a few feet below the surface of the water.

Note: Statia is a private island so landing ashore is not encouraged.

Finish the afternoon with a casual lunch at Oil Nut Bay world-class beach club restaurant before heading back to Leverick Bay

From Leverick Bay venture west by dinghy and snorkel Anguilla Point just south of Mosquito Island or Mountain Point further to the west.

Contact Gumption prior to your arrive and reserve a spot on his’ Sea It Clear’ Tour of Necker Island.  Reservations are required well in advance.  It’s fun for the whole family that you won’t want to miss!  See more details in our Staff Pick of Tours. (Link to Tours)

Spend the day exploring the island of Virgin Gorda.

Gorda Peak reaches 1368 ft above sea level.  There you’ll find spectacular 360-degree views all of the BVI.

If you haven’t tired of snorkeling Virgin Gorda has many shallow water spots to explore coral and marine life on the back side of the island….Mahoe or Savanah Bay are two excellent choices.

Perched 900 feet above the North Sound, the view is breathtaking and the food is delicious.

If your charter plans bring you to Leverick Bay on a Friday evening, you and your guests are in for a special treat.  Leverick Bay hosts Friday night Jumbies parties complete with an all you can eat Beach BBQ and Moko Jumbie Dancers & Entertainment.  What fun!

Enjoy the “Michael Bean Pirate Show” every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening.  Clean and fun for all ages.  Bring the family and your best pirate costume!

If you choose to leave the Leverick Bay Resort for dinner, check out our Virgin Gorda Island page.  There you’ll find Staff Picks for a great dining experience. (Link to Staff Restaurant Picks)

DAY SIX (PART I)

Moor at the southwest corner of George Dog close to Kitchen Point. There aren’t many moorings there so hopefully, you won’t have to wait for one.

The snorkeling is excellent near Kitchen Point at the southwest corner of George Dog.  If the seas are not too choppy, you can also swim around the point to the east shore of the island where you’ll find beautiful coral formations.

There is also good snorkeling at The Chimney located at the north corner of the bay on the west side of Great Dog.  You’ll also find several National Park moorings at this location.

Navigational Tip: If there are no moorings available at the Dogs, on calm days the best anchorages are the bay to the west of Kitchen Point on George Dog as well as to the south side of Great Dog.

DAY SIX (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092101/marina-cay-1.jpg

Moor at Marina Cay.  There are plenty of mooring balls available for day or overnight accommodations.

After mooring, dinghy into the dock at Marina Cay.

The shallow waters and surrounding lagoon are a perfect setting to enjoy a peaceful afternoon on the beach.

After a morning of snorkeling, lunch at the award-winning Pussers on Marina Cay.  They have a new outdoor dining area with relaxing views of the lagoon.

For guests looking for a spot to enjoy snorkeling or diving in calm waters, this is the perfect spot.  The coral reef of the lagoon attracts colorful marine life that makes for excellent snorkeling.

DAY SIX (PART III)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092045/scrub-island.jpg

Treat yourself to a beautiful evening at Scrub Island. Stay on the docks overnight and you will get access to all the amenities – beautiful shower facilities, a HUGE two-tiered infinity edge swimming pool – complete with waterslide and swim-up bar, a hot tub and multiple wonderful restaurants. Be sure to walk the docks at night to see all the Tarpin in the blue lights of the boats.  Note: Scrub Island Marina charges $1.50 – $2.50 per linear foot plus 20% resort fee for overnight docking. Rates are higher during Christmas holiday season.

If you choose to stay overnight on your mooring at Marina Cay, dinghy to Scrub Island for an amazing 5-star dining experience at Caravela Restaurant.  Check out a sample of their menu .

Note: Most resort amenities are reserved for marina guests.  The restaurants and spa are open to everyone.

DAY SEVEN (PART I)

Cruise down the rugged and unspoiled North shore of Tortola and spend the morning exploring Sandy Spit and Green Cay just off the northeast point of Jost Van Dyke.

Note: Care must be taken if attempting to dinghy into shore at Sandy Spit if there is a strong north swell. Although this deserted island beach is an awesome place to relax, it can be quite difficult to attempt this if the weather is not cooperating.

These deserted little islets are a perfect spot to snorkel the underwater coral bridge in their shallow waters and just enjoy the peace and serenity of their natural Caribbean habitat.

DAY SEVEN (PART II)

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092048/great-harbour-jost-1.jpg

By midday, head over to Great Harbour and pick up a mooring for the night.

Dinghy west around the western tip of Great Harbour into White bay.

Note: There are day moorings at White Bay but we don’t recommend their use by our charter guests as the water is extremely shallow in many areas of the bay.

Dock your dinghy on the beach at the Soggy Dollar Bar and enjoy one of their perfect ‘painkillers’ originated and perfected there back in the 1970’s.

Note: Check the drink board when you arrive.  You might have a cocktail already waiting for you thanks to someone you know who knew you coming.

Catch lunch at Ivan’s, also in White Bay.  It’s not quite as crowded as Soggy Dollar Bar up the beach and the atmosphere is very laid back and relaxing.  It’s a good place to meet people from all over the world who come there to camp.

Bring your snorkel gear and snorkel off the beach at White Bay towards the western tip of the island.  This undersea coral formations here are home to stingrays, tarpon and even turtles making for an amazing snorkel experience.  This may be one of your last chances to snorkel and well worth it!

Note: Give yourself enough time to get back to Great Harbour while it’s still light. That’s a dinghy trip you wouldn’t want to make in the dark.

No charter would be complete without making a stop at the world famous Foxy’s Bar and Restaurant.  If you stay for dinner, Foxy often will make an appearance to entertain his guests…a memorable experience for sure!  For the partiers onboard, Foxy’s is also known for their late night parties and live music.  Their Halloween and New Year’s Eve celebrations draw people in from all over the world.

You won’t want to come back from this charter without a t-shirt or hat from Foxy’s.  That name is recognized all over the world.  For years to come, people will stop you when you are wearing that shirt to ask about your trip!

Corsairs in Great Harbour is another nice option for dinner or perhaps a nightcap.  If not, they are open for breakfast as well so plan on rising early before heading out the next day.

https://cdn.virgincharteryachts.com/wp-content/uploads/20200530092051/tortola.jpg

Pick up a mooring ball in Cane Garden Bay, your last stop before heading back to the dock at Nanny Cay.  There is plenty of moorings available here so you shouldn’t have any trouble catching one for a few hours.

Navigational Tip: There are two well-marked reefs as you enter Cane Garden Bay. Just stay between the buoys and you won’t have any issues.

There is a long dinghy dock onshore to the left as you look at the beach from your mooring.

Still need to find that special gift for family back home?  Spend the morning souvenir shopping at some of the great little boutiques in Cane Garden Bay. It is also home to Green VI Glass Studio where you can watch glass blowing artisans create hand-crafted pieces from the local recycled glass.

Completing Your Adventure!

Depart Cane Garden Bay with enough time to arrive at Virgin Charter Yachts no later than noon.  It's 10 nautical miles from Cane Garden Bay to Nanny Cay which will take you approximately 40 minutes at 15 knots. Make sure to give yourself ample time to refuel and complete the check-in procedure at our dock before rushing to catch your Ferry or Flight if you will be leaving Tortola that day.

Even if this was your first charter in the BVI, I'm sure you can now see why it's such an amazing destination for charter vacations.  After your first week in the BVI, you've only just scratched the surface of the things to do and places to experience here.  As you watch the sunset on your last day in the British Virgin Islands, make a promise to yourself to be back soon and charter again with Virgin Charter Yachts!

7 days, 1 catamaran and 3 kids on a BVI Charter : Itinerary & Trip Review

7 days, 1 catamaran and 3 kids on a BVI Charter : Itinerary & Trip Review

As a travel writer, I not only want to share our family’s travel experiences but also provide useful information such as a sample  7 day BVI catamaran charter itinerary .

Our first catamaran charter with our 3 kids was not near as successful as this one, because I was naive and uninformed. In fact, I wrote an article on how NOT to choose a catamaran charter boat after that trip. I strongly advise anyone who is chartering in the BVI for the first time, to read that article first! If you choose the wrong crew, your vacation will likely suck. There is no itinerary on the earth that is going to fix that!

This year, we were a lot wiser on how to choose a charter boat and crew.  After numerous email conversations, we decided to book our BVI catamaran charter on Miss Kirsty . If you want to see what a week in the BVI on Miss Kirsty looks like, take a few minutes to watch our video.

As you saw in the video, we had a blast on the Miss Kirsty Catamaran. Our days were filled with fabulous food, water sports, snorkeling, and a ton more!

Funny enough, the number one question I get about chartering a boat is “whether their kids would like it?”

Are you freaking kidding me? Let me strip this one down for those who wonder the same thing.

Your kids will spend a week with their bathing suits being the fanciest outfit they are required to wear. An indoor hot shower is always an option, but they will likely just wash down on the back of the boat at the end of the day because its quicker.

If you choose wisely, your captain will be your kids best friend as his will take them tubing as many times as their little hearts desire. Yup, it really is to good to be true for a kid. A week without having to beg Dad to take them just one more time!

If you choose the Miss Kirsty Catamaran, then captain Niall will even take the kids wake boarding in the rain! Try asking Dad to get pelted by rain drops so little Johnny can go for a spin on the board….not gonna happen!

Everything is so easy and simple on a catamaran trip. Let’s take snorkeling for example. There is nothing worse for a kid than waiting to do something, right? On a catamaran charter, if little Johnny wants to go snorkeling its as easy as grabbing your mask and jumping in 24/7 !

Unless your kid is addicted to video games and does not like to get wet, there is no freaking way they could dislike this trip.

I also like that the BVI catamaran charters are all-inclusive. Not the all-inclusive you experienced on your Spring Break Carnival cruise ship, but the kind where every meal is prepared with your personal preferences in mind.

The crew will send you a “preference sheet” prior to your arrival, which I imagine looks something like Taylor Swift’s rider for her concert tour. I  almost  felt guilty while filling out the preference sheet for Miss Kirsty.

From an outsider looking in, it paints a picture of a well to do family who is is very picky. “We don’t drink any Pepsi products, only Coke, and I really dislike Coke Lights.” If Niall ever mentions it to you, I stand firmly behind the fact that I can tell the difference between a Diet Coke and a Coke Light with a blind fold on 🙂

Kirsty is the chef on the aptly named Miss Kirsty catamaran, and she is a damn good one. I can honestly say that we were blown away by her talent as a chef. If you pick Miss Kirsty for one reason alone, it would be for the food!

One of my favorite meals of the day was not actually a meal, rather appetizer hour! Who wouldn’t love an appetizer with an amazing sunset ?

As you might have noticed, I have not mentioned any of the pitfalls we experienced in on our previous catamaran charter in the Grenadines . I’ve not mentioned them because they were not an issue. For example, we had air conditioning upstairs and downstairs all day and night. It simply was not an issue on this trip. We technically had air conditioning on the previous catamaran trip, however the captain would not turn it on. For $3,000 a night, you would think air conditioning would be included!

On our previous catamaran trip, the captain did not “take to Murray.” I would be a very wealthy woman if I had a nickel for every time he ran after him yelling in his Polish accent “Muuurrrayyy don’t do that!” To the contrary, Niall was kind to Murray and they went out of their way to make the kids feel at home.

I also noticed that captain Niall would often choose to motor instead of sail if there was not much wind or if it was more practical. On our previous trip, the captain sailed regardless of whether it would be more convenient for us to motor. He was not going to spend the extra money in fuel period. We spent countless mind numbing hours sailing at a seemingly snail pace on that trip.

I can’t stand a cheap ass, its a huge pet peeve of mine, so you can imagine how well I got along with that captain.

Speaking of going places, I will outline for you our BVI charter itinerary and things to do at each location.

We started in St Thomas because its a cheaper and easier airport for us to fly into. Many of the catamaran charters want to start in Tortola, and I understand the reasoning behind it. However, it costs us double to fly into Tortola and it takes double the time to get there. We were happy that Miss Kirsty would accommodate a St Thomas pick up! It did cost us an additional $600 each way, but it was well worth it.

FYI: There is a difference in being cheap and being practical.

Day 1 :  St Thomas and St. John

We boarded the catamaran charter and set sail for St. John where we spent our first evening. We woke up, and immediately took in the view of our home for the next week.

Day 2: Treasure Island and Norman Island

Treasure Island is home to the caves, where you definitely should stop for a snorkle. I always forget this, but a waterproof flash light would come in handy when you are at Treasure Island snorkeling the caves! It is quite dark in those caves.

The Treasure Island caves are always a hit with little boys. Murray could not get enough of exploring the caves at Treasure Island.

Day 3: Peter Island

Peter Island is a private island and resort. Luckily, Niall has developed a relationship with the owners of Peter Island which enabled us to go on land.

We played tennis at Peter Island, and I went for a run. The Peter Island running trail is not for sissies, and I was on the sissy side of running ability during this trip.

I am not exaggerating when I say that the incline shown in the picture below goes for 2 solid miles with no switch-back breaks.

Needless to say, I had to take a selfie when I made it to the top! This was my first and last time running on this vacation. I think I was delirious when I took this picture.

The view one the way back to the boat made up for it.

Day 4: Cooper Island

If I had to skip one of the ports, it would be Cooper Island.

Let me start off by telling you that Cooper Island is many sailors favorite place to moor. Cooper Island is a very friendly island that welcomes boaters to their restaurant, bar, beach and coffee shop.

The reason that I would skip it is that the water is not as clear at Cooper Island. Niall said its due to seaweed. I can see how looking at crystal blue water gets to be the same old thing if you live here, but it was far from getting old to me.

On the bright side, we had the most amazing sunset of the entire trip at Cooper Island.

The Baths are awesome, but Spring Bay is better.

The Baths are often crowded with tourists so definitely shoot for the afternoon instead of the morning.

While you are waiting for the crowds to disappear at the Baths, go to Spring Bay! Our kids favorite place in Virgin Gorda is Spring Bay where they jump off the rocks over and over and over again. I always forget this, but you should bring a cooler as there is nowhere to buy drinks or food.

We would have spent an extra night in Virgin Gorda if we were not already staying another week at Necker Island. I highly recommend mooring at the Bitter End, and visiting Saba Rock. Don’t miss happy hour at Saba Rock where you can hand feed the Tarpon!

Day 6: Anegada

A lot of people skip Anegada because it takes the most time to get to. However, I think Anegada is a “don’t miss” destination on a BVI catamaran charter.

Anegada is a completely flat island that is known for its lobster. It’s fun to rent scooters, and head to one of the many beach bars on Anegada for a Lobster lunch. I recommend visiting Cow Wreck Beach and Loblolly Beach.

In my humble opinion, the restaurant at Loblolly has the best lobster on Anegada. However, Cow Wreck has a better beach. The island is small so visit both!

Day 7: Guana Island

Guana Island is a private island, and one that we were technically not allowed to visit. It was our experience that they really don’t care if you hang out on their beach, so enjoy!

Diane Furstenberg and her billionaire husband also thought this was a nice place to moor for the night!

Guana Island offered a nice protective cove for water skiiing and wake boarding as well. Niall taught Claire how to slalom at Guana Island!

Day 8: Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke is home to Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar which are probably two of the most well known beach bars in the BVI. We swam into Soggy Dollar as that is the only way to get there! However, we swam back for another one of Kirsty’s delicious lunches.

One of the best things to do on Jost Van Dyke is hike to the bubbly pool. The bubbly pool is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the winter months. During our visit, the bubbly pool was definitely “bubbly!”

This is what it looks like just before you are crushed into the bubbly pool!

Only the brave or stupid, Im not sure which one it is, will welcome a beating from the Atlantic.

Day 9:  St Thomas

We were supposed to be flying home, but you know how we roll! We stayed for another week on Necker Island for the Necker Cup!

Check back soon for our post on Richard Branson’s Necker Island and the Necker Cup.

I hope that you found our BVI charter itinerary useful. If you decide to charter a catamaran in the BVI, we highly recommend Miss Kirsty catamaran.

Don’t forget that a bad charter crew can ruin your vacation , so choose wisely.

The fastest and easiest way to travel into Tortola is by flying into the island’s main airport,  Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) , better known as Beef Island Airport, located on the northeast corner of the island. From there, guests can walk about 100 yards directly from the airport to the pier, where the crew is waiting with the tender to whisk you to your waiting yacht—talk about convenience!

As another option, guests can also take a short taxi ride over to Road Town, which is one of the area’s largest marinas and best locations for dining, shopping, and entertainment. In Road Town, your charter can depart from one of the area’s popular marinas, such as the Inner Harbour or Port Purcell.
