It was an excellent sailing trip. Great service , the organization was excellent. The boats were clean and perfectly equipped. We have missed nothing. The skippers are very professional and courteous. They were able to advise us perfectly and showed us the most beautiful bays. The communication on the boat and during the handling went smoothly. Many thanks for that. We are absolutely thrilled and would like to come back again.

I can't imagine! Never sailed with a sailboat or catamaran before, but this trip was fantastic. We spent an unforgettable time with friends on two boats. Since it was our first time on a boat, we decided to book two skippers. And these two guys are such nice and smart people. They showed us nice places for swimming and diving. Thank you so much that we could have a great time, guys.

thumb

Spent an amazing week with my friends on the sailing boat and the catamaran. Our two skippers were super nice. They showed us how to sail and brought us to the most beautiful spots to swim and snorkel and the wonderful harbors to spend the nights. The facilities of the boat are really good and clean. Definitely recommend it!

thumb

A week on the sailboat/ catamaran were fantastic. Very nice employees/ skippers, who make you feel safe and learn something! They also showed us many beautiful secret spots and had lots of fun... It's worth it!

thumb

Best experience of chartering a sailing yacht. We are not that experienced in sailing, hence we booked a skipper, too. He showed us the nicest coasts and bays around Rhodes. It was a breathtaking experience. Thanks again! 10/10

Guide to Rhodes Island

A heady mix of old and new with rugged natural beauty.

Known in Greece as the ‘Sun Island’, Rhodes basks in the suns rays for more than 300 days of the year. This is just one of the reasons it has long been a favourite with writers, painters and visitors who travel from far and wide to experience the island's beautiful coastline and rich cultural heritage.

For charterers who are looking for clear warm waters to swim in and pristine beaches to relax on by day and some lively nighttime revelry once the sun has gone down, Rhodes is the perfect superyacht destination for a Mediterranean Yacht Charter . It is the largest of the beautiful Dodecanese Island group and surrounded by the inviting waters of the Aegean Sea. While in recent years it has developed a party island reputation, its spectacular interior landscapes, fantastic atmosphere and significant local history ensures there is much to do and see.

Rhodes’ fascinating and turbulent history has left behind a scattering of stunning relics throughout the island and is famed for its magnificent Colossus of Rhodes which stood 30m high and is now considered one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. The medieval walled old town that lies at the heart of the capital, Rhodes Town, has been awarded a place on the coveted UNESCO World Heritage List with its minarets, palm trees and sandstone architecture. From Byzantine museums and the Mosque of Suleiman to the uplifting Valley of the Butterflies, there is an abundance of offerings ashore that will keep even the most restless of travellers occupied.

The interior of Rhodes comprises of hills and low mountains covered in lush green forests and blossoming flora. Traditional villages wind into the hills and it is here that you will find tavernas that offer the most delicious and authentic Greek cuisine while the old cellars are certain to some some vintage tipples ready for you to sample during an al fresco lunch. Particular delights are the traditional villages of Lindhos, with its own acropolis, and the forested towns of Monólithos and Kritinía.

Alternatively you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the views of Rhodes coastline and beyond from the decks of your luxury charter yacht . Between the luxury resorts and glittering beach bars are long stretches of untouched sands renowned for their unspoilt beauty. The clarity of the waters and thriving marine life are perfect for snorkelling, such as St Paul’s Bay which is flanked by steep cliffs and lapped by rock-peppered blue waters making it perfect for exploring with children.

If you are interested in a luxury crewed yachting vacation in the clear waters of the Aegean Islands, view all Greece Yacht Charters which are available for private rental.

Those with even a hint of interest in Greek history shouldn't miss the Lindos Acropolis and the Colossus that was said to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Founded as early as 1000 years BC this is worth a day trip in its own right. The Byzantine churches of Lindos are relics of another era of Greek history and equally worth spending time in and around. The Street of Knights is a relic of the Ottoman Empire, as are the odd medieval castle and fort you will find.

For those who appreciate nature, the mountainous interior of Rhodes is full of flora and fauna that will entice and excite. Head into one or two of the villages that remain almost untouched by the tourism economy, and are welcoming and relaxed to those who wander by.

Tourism has been a major industry for Rhodes for over 100 years since Italy took the islands from the declining Ottoman Empire. The beautiful beaches are a major draw, as are those that you may only be able to get to on a charter yacht.

You will find a sophisticated tourism industry that is one of the best in Greece. For those on a Rhodes yacht charter, you can mix excursions by day with excellent nightlife geared to different age groups from the younger crowd in Faliraki to the less high paced but equally fun in Rhodes Town's old town where you can enjoy mezze on a taverna tour.

Explore Rhodes By Renting A Yacht

As the largest island in the Dodecanese island chain, Rhodes Island is worth exploring for a couple of days in its own right, whether on a bareboat charter or crewed yacht charter. You never know what you may find on a Rhodes yacht charter - from ancient ruins to an occasional sandy beach only accessible by sea, to hidden anchorages that you could be just yours for the evening.

That said, the 12 main Dodecanese Islands are great for an island-hopping adventure on a boat rental on the Aegean Sea. Less popular (and crowded) than the nearby Cyclades, you will find that these have a different culture to their Cycladic neighbours.

The architecture has a more Ottoman influence as against that of the Cyclades that is more Greek. You will find mediaeval castles, ancient Greek ruins and of course, miles and miles of beautiful sandy beaches.

Visit Samos with its astounding inland scenery and sanctuary devoted to the Greek goddess Hera and mountain cave church where an icon of the Virgin Mary was allegedly found.

Nearby Kalymnos is a rock climbing destination, holding an annual international rock climbing festival, thanks to its severe terrain. If hanging off a cliff by your fingertips isn't quite your bag it can be fun to watch.

As a final example of the islands you can visit, Leros is an island known for its laid back village way of life. There are castles and palaces to be found in some of them - always worth nosing in to see what's about as you never know what you will find.

How To Get To Rhodes

Rhodes has a major international airport but can also be accessed by ferry from nearby Marmaris and from Athens.

Rhodes International Airport

During the summer months, Rhodes International Airport is served by a large number of European airlines. From there you can take a bus or taxi to your marina or hotel. There are a number of flights daily from Athens for those flying in from outside of Europe.

Athens is an 18-hour ferry ride away for those who wish to take a different way to Rhodes City or are flying from a country outside of Europe.

The Turkish resort of Marmaris and its Dalaman International Airport is far closer than Athens, with just a couple of hours on the ferry.

Marinas In Rhodes

There are several marinas on Rodos Island. The one in Rhodes Town including the very new Rhodes Marina is also known as Mandraki Marina. Charter yacht companies have charter yachts including catamaran , motor yacht , sailing yacht and gulet charter available on bareboat and crewed yacht charter terms.

Rhodes Marina (Mandraki Marina):

With its 120m luxury yachts capacity, this is capable of taking all but the largest of mega yachts on the Med.

Berth Characteristics:

Max Length 120m (393 Feet)

Max Draught 6.5m (21.3 Feet)

List of additional services: Shore power, water, WiFi, laundry, showers, toilets, bar, restaurant, supermarket, ship repair, taxi, ATM.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Rhodes

Introduction and then potential routes to travel on 7 day or 14 days charters

7 days - Dodecanese Islands: With the island of Kos as the mid-point, this trip is an uphill-downhill sailing holiday with the first couple of days beating and close reaching on the Aegean via Halki, Tilos and Nisyros to the island of Kos, before heading east to Symi close to the Turkish coast. Kos is another major tourist island like Rhodes but you will see other sides like the almost untouched Halki, which was uninhabited for many years due to persistent raids from pirates.

14 days - Dodecanese Islands: This is an opportunity to 'do the Dodecanese' with daily sails of up to 40NM heading north as far as Ikaria. You will miss some of the islands (there are more than 12 in the archipelago) but it will introduce you to the different subcultures within the chain. You will see volcanic islands, mountains and villages seemingly lost in time.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Rhodes

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath.

Sailing Weather In Rhodes

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degrees C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger north to both west Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Mandraki Marina is the main marina in Rhodes, though there are a number on the north and south coasts of the island where you might enjoy dinner or a night staying over as you wish.

With July and August the peak months, yet it being still warm and comfortable in September, if you can get out when the kids go back to school then you could be in for a treat. The Meltemi isn't so powerful then as well, allowing for an easier sail on your Rhodes yacht charter.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Yacht Charter Rhodes

Rhodes Yacht Charter

The largest of the Dodecanese islands in Greece, Rhodes is abundant in beaches, wooded valleys and ancient history. Through all its history, Rhodes has remained beautiful. Its beaches are among the cleanest in the Aegean Sea, and its interior is still home to unspoiled mountain villages, rich fertile plains and beautiful butterflies. Whether you seek the buzz of nightlife and beaches, diving in crystal-clear water or a culture-vulture journey through past civilisations, it’s all here.

Rhodes is capital of the Dodecanese and one of the biggest islands in the Aegean with a total area of 1.400.000 square kilometres and an estimated population of 116.000 inhabitants. The capital’s nucleus is a beautiful medieval city, legacy of the crusading Knights of St John, who used the island as their main base from 1309 until 1522.

Rodhes Town’s medieval atmospheric Old Town is a maze of cobbled streets spiriting you back to the days of the Byzantine Empire and beyond , the fact that made the Old Town very much the main event, followed by Lindos, with its ancient acropolis and atmospheric village. Further south is the picture-perfect town of Lindos, a weave-world of sugarcube houses spilling down to a turquoise bay.  On the southeastern side there are beaches, particularly around Afandou, Kalathos and Yennadi as well as isolated monuments of the partly forested interior, such as castles near Monolithos and Kritinia, and frescoed churches at Tharri, Asklipio and Saint George Vardas, are also worth pointing your eye. The far south cape, Prassonissi, is one of the best windsurfing spots in Europe.

The island is blessed by first rate sights and entertainment and for receiving on average more than 300 days of sunshine a year . What’s more, Rhodes is a destination for sun-worshippers from colder, darker, wetter lands around the globe.

Rhodes is located east of Tilos and northeast of Karpathos and the exact geographical coordinates  are 36°10’00.0″N 28°00’00.0″E in the Aegean Sea.

A yacht trip has long ceased to be an attribute of luxury. Now, it is one of the best ways to enjoy the nature of Rhodes. You will spend an unforgettable time staying on secluded beaches, exploring the beautiful bay of Ladiko and Anthony Queen, sunbathing on the warm sand, and splashing on the waves of the Mediterranean Sea.

When planning your trip to Greece , you should definitely think about a yacht charter in Rhodes and sailing trips to the neighboring islands.

Things to Do in Rhodes

With the assistance and services of the 12 Knots Yacht Club, you can explore the secluded beaches and bays of Rhodes. The company specializes in private bareboat and crewed yacht charters all over the world. If you rent a boat in Rhodes, you can set off to conquer the seas of the ancient environs of Rhodes on the most beautiful sailing yacht. Each route will reveal the natural beauty of the Greek island and its secluded corners inaccessible to most tourists. This type of vacation is very beneficial and safe in today’s pandemic conditions.

Boat rental in Rhodes is a great opportunity to admire the panorama of the Old Town from the sea. You will be able to visit the bay of Ladiko and Anthony Quinn surrounded by green hills with clear water, as well as a unique super spot — the area of Traganu beach with caves carved in rocks.

Lovers of active recreation will also find something to their liking. They can explore the underwater world in the coves of Rhodes. And fans of sea fishing can find many secluded places for a relaxing holiday and fishing and go hiking along the tourist routes. Tourists note that the seaside restaurants of the city offer some of the most delicious seafood dishes in the country.

Sailing Conditions in Rhodes

Rhodes is famous for its excellent weather conditions for sailing due to the mild Mediterranean climate. Navigation is simple on the Greek coast of Rhodes. The most favorable time for a yacht vacation in Greece is from May to October. But in other months, sea adventures are no less exciting and interesting.

Rhodes is “occupied” by Meltemi — a strong dry summer wind, which blows from mid-May to mid-September. Meltemi usually dies down in the evening, but it can blow for several days. The wind direction on the island is from north to northwest.

Under the current pandemic situation, yachting is a safe alternative to hotel vacations. On the yacht, you will have minimal contact with strangers, and if you wish, you can sail for the whole week in the company of close family members. The less you interact with other people, the safer your vacation is.

Best Time for Sailing Vacations in Rhodes

The active tourist season on the island of Rhodes starts at the beginning of May and ends on the last days of September. The peak season is June, July, and August. The climate on the island is as comfortable as possible for tourists. It is a Mediterranean climate, mild and humid in winter but hot and fresh in summer.

In June, it is not too hot. The air temperature reaches +26 °C – +28 °C, the water warms up to +22 °C. July and August are the hottest months; the air temperature reaches +30 °C, the water warms up to +26 °C. Usually, there are no rains during these months. The northeast cool and humid wind saves you from the heat.

In September, the temperature is only a couple of degrees lower than in August, an average of +24 °C (water and air). Out of season in Rhodes, almost all spots of rest, food, and entertainment are closed. Therefore, better not consider the island for a sailing trip on the New Year holidays.

Difficulty Level: Sailing Requirements

The sailing level of difficulty is medium; special training may be required. Dodecanese islands are suitable for more experienced yachtsmen, especially in July and August, when strong and sometimes unstable winds are present. Yachting in Rhodes is not recommended for the first solo trips.

With a southerly wind, some bays do not protect from waves and wind. So, it is necessary to follow the weather forecast and think about reserve parking.

12 Knots offers you the best yacht bases for a boat charter in the Dodecanese islands — Kos, Rhodes, and Patmos. Explore the Dodecanese Islands from Rhodes!

Rhodes is undoubtedly the most popular, cosmopolitan island of the Dodecanese. It features one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in Europe (a World Heritage Site in fact), a castle that is still pretty much the center of the main city of Rhodes. Once the base of operations of the Knights Order of Saint John, the Medieval Old Town is now packed with restaurants, bars and sun-baked, bougainvillea-filled verandas. Studded with monuments from the classical to the hellenistic to Byzantium to crusader and ottoman times, Rhodes is definitely a must for anyone even remotely interested in history.

Our yacht charter base on the island of Rhodes is perfect for exploring the Dodecanese Islands including the popular islands of Kos and Patmos, as well as the relaxed islands of Leros and Symi.

Rhodes is easily accessible by charter flights from many European countries and is a short connecting flight for those flying in to Athens.

Our Charter Fleet in Rhodes

Our boats in Rhodes are available for both skippered charters and bareboat hire and include a variety of our most popular sailing yachts and catamarans. Special charter arrangements are also available including private day trips and tours and rentals for special events including company excursions, weddings and honeymoon trips.

Meet the Istion Team at Rhodes Marina

Welcome to Rhodes Marina, where your unforgettable sailing holiday will begin! Led by our base manager, Manolis, and supported by a dedicated team, we strive to make every moment of your time in Greece exceptional. Together, our goal is to deliver an unforgettable sailing adventure, with a focus on exceptional service, support, and a carefree experience you'll treasure forever.

Sailing Itineraries from Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese, and, apart from a unique place sail around itself, a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding islands and enjoying probably the most crystal-clear waters you have ever sailed in. All of the 14 beautiful, unique islands in the Dodecanese are worth visiting and sailing around. One who wishes to see most, if not all, of the marvels we call the Dodecanese, should reserve sufficient time to do so, which is precisely our first and foremost recommendation!

One week charters from Rhodes will usually include heading north towards Kos with stops at the islands of Symi and its picturesque harbor of breathtaking beauty, the island of Nysiros and its still active volcano, and the laid-back, unassuming island beauties of Tilos and Halki. We also have a charter base on Kos , so keep an eye out for special one way offers from Rhodes to Kos if you have a flexible itinerary!

Two week charter plans can incorporate the islands of Kalymnos further north, with its rich tradition of sponge fishing, laid back Leros, and the beautiful island of Patmos with its famous 13th century Monastery of Saint John. Each of these islands can easily fill up days of your time! So feel free to plot any course you like, and in case you need advice or possible route suggestions, simply ask us!

During summer the prevailing wind in the area is the annual Meltemi that blows strong, usually at force 4-6, from the North West. During spring and autumn, the wind usually blows from the South East at about force 2-4. There are numerous bays and secure anchorages in the Dodecanese Islands where you can find shelter in case of rough winds.

The island of deer and hibiscus: lots of wind and possibilities for sailors and surfers.

With an area of 1400 km2, Rhodes is the fourth largest Greek island and the capital island of the Dodecanese Archipelago in the southeastern Aegean Sea . Also located near the Turkish coast, Rhodes was an incredibly important port in the ancient times of the region, and the presence of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes, presence here was a testament to the island’s illustrious history. The bronze statue of Helios, the Greek sun god, was more than 30 meters high and was erected in the third century BC. For almost 70 years, it stood proudly at the entrance of Port Mandraki in Rhodes capital city of the same name before being destroyed by a violent earthquake. Today, in the place where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood, lush fauna grows and supports the existence of the island’s many deer, which, because of their prevalence, are also the official emblem of the island. Hibiscus plants are also typical of the region, and add an extra touch of beauty to the island’s background. After the Ottoman occupation between the 14th and early 20th centuries and the turmoil of the Second World War, Rhodes has become the second most popular Greek vacation island after Crete. Rhodes has 117,000 inhabitants, 90% of whom live off the island’s tourism industry. Rhodes enjoys a solid 3000 hours of sunshine per year, meaning the 250 kilometers of coastline as well as the many bays can be enjoyed thoroughly. The neighboring islands Karpathos, Kos , Kalymnos, Leros, Astypalea, Kasos, Symi, Tilos, Nisyros, Patmos, Halki, Leipsoi, Megisti (also known as Kastellorizo), Agathonisi, along with Rhodes’ extensive coastline and the coast of Turkey just 20 kilometers away make Rhodes a multifaceted and exciting destination for sailors and skippers. Surfers especially appreciate the winds in the region: the typical summer Meltemi winds, which are fairly strong and can reach up to a six on the Beaufort scale. They are well known on the north and west sides of the island, especially in Ixia, a surfing paradise. The Prasonisi peninsula in the south also has a good reputation for windsurfing, and Fanes, Kremasti, Theologos and Trianda are known as good surf spots. Divers also appreciate Rhodes for its numerous beautiful underwater areas, the best known of which include those near the hot springs of Kallithea on the northeast coast, where there is also a diving school. There are guided dives offered from Kolymbia, Lindos, Pefkos, and Plimiri . The water park in Faliraki, with water slides, a wave pool, an aqua gym, a pirate ship and a man-made river, is also a fun way to enjoy the water. At Sabina’s Watersport Rhodos, where both English and German are spoken, you can also rent out water skis and wakeboards.

Fortresses and Ruins, Churches and Chapels, Forts and Cisterns of the Dodecanese

Throughout their long histories, Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese have been of great interest particularly in the areas of art and cultural history. These are two important aspects of the region for many holiday goers who visit Rhodes. The most famous sites the island has to offer are the ancient Minoan Ruins of Lalysos at Cape Zonari on the northeastern part of Rhodes, the remains of the old city Kameiros on the west coast, and the site of the nearby ruins of the Fortress of the Order of Saint John in Monolithos, which today is widely used as a viewpoint and an ideal place to take some photos. Other than the Acropolis in Greece’s capital, the Acropolis in Lindos in southern Rhodes is the most visited in the country. The center of the complex, which you can visit for a small fee, forms part of the reconstructed Temple of Athena, built in the 4th century BC. Also worth seeing is the Byzantine chapel Agios Nikolaos Foundoukli, close to Eloussa, which was built in the 15th century. There are many ancient wonders to see on the Dodecanese islands around Rhodes: the ruins of a castle of the Order of Saint John can be found on the small neighboring island Alimia, just seven kilometers to the west of Rhodes; Karpathos boasts the ancient Roman cistern in Lefkos; on Kos you will find the remains of the Andimachia Fortress; Astypalea will show you a view of the Venetian castle which overlooks Chora; the Brouzi fortress on Leros sits at the entrance to the Agia Marina; you can take a visit to the Panormitis monastery on Symi; have a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Agios Ioannis monastery on Patmos; and see the magnificent churches of different eras on Lipsi.

Discover Rhodes and the Dodecanese with a Sailboat from Yachtico

All the boats are built by internationally renowned manufacturers, and most were made between 2005 and 2012. In general, the boats cost between 500 and 9600 Euros per week, the 9600 Euro price being attached to a luxury catamaran with more than 11 beds in over seven cabins, best for a charter holiday with the whole family or for a bunch of couples. Despite that high price, there are other lovely, luxurious boats from around 900 Euros per week.

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Rhodes

There are tens of islands in the Dodecanese, of varying degrees of development: from thriving tourist spots like Kos and medieval towns like Rhodes, to secluded bays that you can only access by boat and which, if you didn't know better, you could imagine you are the first person ever to have visited. If you're only chartering for one week, then the natural itinerary from Rhodes are the islands immediately north of it, with Symi and Nisyros obvious destinations. If you had longer, or like longer days on a boat, it’s certainly possible to head out to Karpathos or Astipalea, or even right across to Crete.

Rhodes - 6 day sailing itinerary

That means you'll be sailing on average about 25 nM a day, and, with an average speed of at least five knots, should mean only four or five hours of making way (but shorter if you kick out more knots). The pace of your holiday should be quite leisurely, and you'll have time to get to know each of the places you visit, or spend time playing at sea, or throwing in extra stops, as the mood takes you – after all, this is your holiday. Enjoy.

Halki

Thankfully, we're not going to battle on this itinerary. After getting past Rhodes, we're heading South-west, following the northern coastline of Rhodes island (and past the airport) as we make our way to the small island of Halki. You'll likely be beating or close-hauled in the prevailing wind, so you should be seeing exactly what sort of crew you've assembled. But don't worry – you'll have a week to lick them into shape.

Halki is a tiny island with a population of fewer than 500 people at the last census, in one village. There used to be more people here, but the whole island was abandoned in the 1850s after people got so fed up of being ransacked by local pirates that they just left, with many emigrating to the USA. Of course, one of the things that made life difficult on the island is that there was no water source – until 2014, when they opened their first water desalination project, water had to be shipped in from nearby Rhodes. No, actually.

It's a sleepy island which is pretty much off the beaten track, and life moves at a different pace here. There are a number of tavernas or places to eat though, and you can be comfortable here. Outside of the village, there's still signs of derelict white-washed buildings ,and the beaches and nature are pretty much unspoilt.

Tilos

Tilos is about double the size of Halki, but given how small Halki is, that doesn't say too much! There are more facilities for tourists – including a hotel – but in general, this is a place which will feel a world away from all the passengers you shared an aeroplane with on the way to Greece.

This itinerary is honestly not just about abandoned former towns of Greece, but in Tilos there is the creepy ghost-town of Mikro Chorio, which was abandoned just after the second world war. The people left laden all their roofing tiles, but the stone walls are still standing and it’s a quirky place to wander around (and it’s only a short walk from the marina).

Tilos is also notable for being the first island in the world to run off green energy (wind and solar), and for the exceptional quality and privacy of its nudist beaches – so keep an eye out for those.

Kardamena

If you're getting good speed or would prefer a longer sail, then you could head to the historic old town of Kos instead of Kardamena (check out our destination guide for Kos if you want to find out more about it), but we didn’t want too many long legs on this itinerary, and the change of pace at Kardamena shows the other side of holidays in Greece - it might be just what your crew need before we head back out to remote islands. Plus it gets us in a good position for heading to the volcanic island of Nisyros tomorrow, and giving us plenty of time to explore there.

The prevailing wind beyond Tilos is likely to be North-westerly, which means you’ll likely be beating up the wind as you work your way to Kardamena. Close-hauled is actually the fastest of all sail trims, and it’s not impossible that you’ll be able to make the distance in a single tack if the wind is blowing from the right angle of the North-west. Enjoy the sunshine, the beach, and your evening of being a land-lubbing tourist.

Nisyros

The sail is pretty much due South, so you’ll likely be broad-reaching to run with the wind, but bonus points are available (and bonus street cred for the skipper) if you throw in a Goose-wing on your way down.

In Nisyros, you can choose to moor up in the picturesque village of Mandraki, which is the largest village on the island, and which has a brilliant monastery overlooking the village, or to berth at nearby Pali, which is even smaller, though there is still a bakery and a taverna there, and it’s only a few kilometres down the coast. If you opt for Mandraki, you might be surprised to find out it has its very own bar area – head to ‘Little Venice’ beneath the monastery, where you’ll find four or five lively bars. Oh, and you’ll need to buy a piece of local pumice for good luck when sailing away from the island.

Symi

The town has a good mix of shops (leather goods are the local product), and there’s plenty of tavernas and restaurants to sit and enjoy the evening with. You could also join the locals with a stroll along the promenade in the town. Aside from the beautiful town, Symi is a haven for wildlife, and everywhere on the island you’ll find tranquillity and unspoilt beauty. You can hike around the walking trails in the countryside and really feel like you are on another planet to your desk or computer.

Sailing-wise, you’re heading due East, so you should be reaching or broad reaching against the prevailing North-westerly wind, as you make your way below the Turkish coastline, and across to Symi. You’ll spot a few idyllic beaches on the Turkish coast - technically you’ll need to get the right paperwork in place before you’re allowed to visit – before nosing between Symi and the island of Nimos and heading South to the well-protected bay and Symi.

Rhodes

Heading further South (and in this direction, you should be running or broad reaching with the prevailing winds) the island on the nose of your boat will be Rhodes, so set your sails for the furthest land you can see on the port side, as Rhodes town is just around that headland. Arriving back to your marina in Rhodes, head to the fuel berth to fill up on diesel, before returning to the vague area you picked up the yacht or catamaran from. Someone will be along to inspect the boat tonight, but you'll still be able to sleep on her, before checking out in the morning.

Hopefully you've had a brilliant week of sailing, and have enjoyed island-hopping. The views are tremendous, the Greek weather makes it super-relaxing, and I'm sure everyone onboard has had a big smile on their face. If you haven't already got one, don't forget to get a team photo of the crew on deck! If you haven't had chance to visit Rhodes, then now is a great time to see what it is all about, and it should be lively in town tonight (particularly near the marina) as all the sailors return from a week at sea and exchange all their tales and blow off steam!

Sailing Conditions

Greece Sailing - Wind Conditions

The winds in the Dodecanese are the best and most reliable winds in Greece – if you're sailing in June to August you can expect Force 4 or 5 winds (11-22 knots) throughout the day, which is absolutely perfect sailing conditions - though be sure to check the weather forecasts as at the height of summer, winds have reached Force 8 before.

At night, the winds usually reduce considerably to a light breeze, but you'll want to keep your lines nice and tight as they can pick up again in the early hours, and there's nothing worse than a clanking rope to wake you up!

Rhodes - Average Temperature

We operate out of two marinas in Rhodes: Mandraki Marina , and the new Rhodes Marina . Both are superbly located for exploring Rhodes town, and about the same distance from the airport, and offer superb access to the other Dodecanese islands.

Typically, charters run from Saturday to Saturday, so if that doesn’t quite match the available flights from near where you live, you might need a place to stay for the night – we can recommend the following places in the area: Moschos Hotel , Congo Hotel or Bellevue Suites .

Mandraki Marina, Rhodes

The historic Mandraki Marina was once the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It's just a short walk from the old town of Rhodes, where there are a mix of castles, museums, shops, bars, restaurants, and ice-cream parlours. Ships have been sheltering in Mandraki for literally centuries.

Mandraki Marina, Rhodes

Rhodes Marina

Rhodes Marina is a tiny bit further down the coast from Mandraki Marina, and was only built in 2016 after things started to get a bit too busy in Mandraki marina. It is beautiful in its own right and boasts 600 berths and all the mod-cons, including free public wifi, multiple shops, bars and restaurants, and even a heliport!

Have a look at Opera - https://operaboatrhodes.com

We have privately chartered sailing yachts a few times over the years, most recently was 5 years ago with these guys - https://www.rhodessailingacademy.gr but our favourite charters were on "Vikings" - a very old wooden pirate ship built by the owner (sadly now passed but still operated by his family).

Yacht Charters in Greece Report Unusually High Number of Bookings

Summer 2024 is busier than usual in the Mediterranean, especially with the limited offer of crewed yacht charters. First-choice motor yachts report a 65% booking rate, while catamarans are up to 73% booked. The remaining dates are being snapped up fast.

United States - April 12, 2024 —

charter yachts rhodes

The team at MyGreekCharter is raising an alarm—if planning to wait until the last minute to book a charter, it might be too late.

“Unlike vacation rentals, the supply is virtually unlimited, and yachts are limited by available docking space in marinas. Having a yacht in a summer hotspot with docking space and charter rights is becoming increasingly more difficult,” says Daniel Asmus, owner of DMA Yachting.

For those yearning for a lavish summer getaway, the advice is to plan without delay, as the prime booking window is swiftly closing.

Key Market Trends for the 2024 Greek Yacht Charter Market

  • The development of new marinas is progressing slowly, restricting the overall yacht capacity.
  • Summer season kicks off almost 3 weeks earlier and ends 3 weeks later (April-October)
  • Luxury tourism has grown 87% since Covid.
  • The charter season is extending, starting in April this year, marking an earlier onset than in previous years.

Winter 2024/25 is filling up as well in the Caribbean

6 months earlier than in previous years, Caribbean charters are reporting 40% complete. The Caribbean, particularly the British Virgin Islands (BVI), is witnessing an uptrend similar to Greece. Mo Pristas from CharterGuru has reported unusually high bookings in the BVI, while Bahamas Motor Yachts reports a noticeably prolonged 2024 summer charter season.

The Average Value of Crewed Charters Has Been Growing

Motor yachts are at the forefront of this growth, with this yacht category experiencing a 30% increase in the average expenditure per charter since 2021. This increase reflects a robust demand and a shift in consumer preferences towards more luxurious and extended yacht charters.

An additional factor to the increase of the charter amount is simply the increased size and value of the available yachts, which have grown from a 70’ average to a 98’ average since 2021.

The Increasing Number of New Yachts Entering the Market Is Causing Concern About Industry Overload

The rate at which new yachts are being introduced into the market is accelerating. While older yachts aren’t being replaced but refurbished to extend service life, the overall number of yachts is rapidly increasing. This growth puts pressure on an already strained infrastructure, sparking debate among industry experts about the potential for overcrowding and its limits.

The available docking space nevertheless limits this increase in supply. Greece is reporting huge issues with marina availability as new developments are being delayed.

Charterers Are Looking for Less Crowded Charter Areas

The iconic Cyclades Islands continue attracting visitors for their historical and aesthetic appeal, but the hype has consequences, and tourists are looking to less crowded alternatives. Lesser-known destinations like Antiparos , Anafi , Ikaria , Kythira , and Nisiros are gaining traction as travelers seek quieter, more unique experiences away from mainstream tourist hotspots. Greece's diverse coastline, sailing conditions, and enormous charter fleet offer many charter options. A little research goes a long way, with an opportunity to explore more authentic and unspoiled destinations in Greece.

Nearly 750 small boat arrivals recorded at weekend ahead of Rwanda bill votes

Rishi Sunak braced for fresh round of wrangling over plan that is due to cost taxpayers £1.8m per deportee

The number of people travelling by small boat to seek asylum in the UK hit a new daily high for 2024 at the weekend, figures show, as Rishi Sunak braces for a fresh round of parliamentary wrangling over the Rwanda deportation bill.

Unions and charities are preparing to mount legal challenges if the bill, which is meant to “stop the boats”, passes into law this week.

Official Home Office data shows 534 people were detected making the Channel crossing by small boat on Sunday, after 214 travelled on Saturday. It means about 6,000 people have made the journey so far this year, with more than 75,000 arrivals recorded two years on from the Rwanda deal being signed.

The deal will cost UK taxpayers about £1.8m for each asylum seeker, according to Whitehall’s official auditor, although no one has so far been deported.

The safety of Rwanda (asylum and immigration) bill will be back in the Commons on Monday as the government seeks to overturn changes made in the Lords. It is expected to be sent back to the Lords on Tuesday and could then be returned to the Commons again.

Ministers will seek to strip out changes made by peers who want extra legal safeguards, including a provision to ensure “due regard” for domestic and international law.

Victoria Atkins, the health secretary, suggested on Sunday the Home Office would be “ready to go” in implementing the plan once the bill entered the statute books.

The legislation seeks to revive the government’s plan to send some asylum seekers on one-way flights to Kigali. The scheme has faced a series of setbacks since it was announced two years ago by the then prime minister, Boris Johnson. It declares the east African country safe after the policy was grounded by the supreme court ruling it unlawful .

Government insiders remain confident the bill will pass by the end of this week after another round of parliamentary ping pong between the Commons and Lords.

Labour has indicated it will not block the bill, with local elections looming and the government hoping for a confrontation over the scheme. However, a group of Labour and crossbench peers are expected to send the bill back to the Commons again.

The Labour peer Shami Chakrabarti told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme her amendment “restores the jurisdiction of domestic courts who are defenestrated by this bill” and detailed other amendments including exemptions for victims of modern slavery and human trafficking and for people who “put themselves in harm’s way overseas serving the British crown”.

The charity Care4Calais, which helped block flights to Rwanda last year, said it had recruited volunteers to identify people who were due to be removed to the east-central African country. It intends to offer legal support to asylum seekers to try to keep them in the UK.

Meanwhile, the Times reported on Monday that Britain had also approached countries including Costa Rica, Armenia, Ivory Coast and Botswana in an effort to replicate the scheme. Sources said the claims were accurate but referred to talks that took place last year.

Sunak gave the Home Office and Foreign Office a deadline of last autumn to secure two additional deals, according to the paper.

A government spokesperson said Britain was “continuing to work with a range of international partners to tackle global illegal migration challenges”. They said: “Our focus right now is passing the safety of Rwanda bill, which builds on the Illegal Migration Act, and putting plans in place to get flights off the ground as soon as possible.”
