Review of Dufour 25

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.28 - 1.38 meter (4.20 - 4.50 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.3 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Dufour 25 is about 121 kg/cm, alternatively 682 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 121 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 682 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 20m 2 (215 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

  • Add to quote

My husband and I bought a 25 foot Dufour sailboat last summer and have only been out puttering up the ICW around Georgetown, SC to Myrtle Beach. We have had the sails up maybe four times. Does anyone have knowlege of a 25 foot Dufour? We have found very limited information via the web. Thanks.

Choosing Your Ideal Dufour

With so many Dufour models to choose from, here are some key factors to consider when making your decision:

1. Intended Use:

  • Cruising:  If island hopping and leisurely exploration are your priorities, prioritize comfort and livability. Consider models with spacious cabins and well-equipped galleys, like the Dufour 41 or Dufour 430.
  • Racing:  For those seeking the thrill of competition, Dufour offers performance-oriented models like the Dufour 37, designed for speed and maneuverability.
  • Mixed Use:  Many Dufour models offer a great balance of performance and comfort, making them ideal for sailors who enjoy both racing and cruising.

2. Crew Size & Layout:

Consider how many people you’ll typically have on board. Dufour offers models with various cabin configurations, from two cabins on the Dufour 37 to four or more on larger models like the Dufour 470. Think about the amount of living space you desire and choose a layout that best suits your needs.

Dufour offers a range of models at different price points. Determine your budget upfront and explore models that fit comfortably within your range.

4. New vs. Used:

While a new Dufour offers the latest technology and a pristine warranty, a pre-owned Dufour can be a more affordable option. Carefully consider maintenance history and potential repair costs when exploring used options.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The Dufour 1800 was the successor to the Dufour 25, introduced in 1979. 200 1800’s were built in 3 years. A lifting keel version was also available. 1800 refers to the displacement of 1800 Kg.

The victims were identified as 50-year-old Colin Ocker and 25-year-old Jared Dale Hunt.

The U.S. Coast Guard Heartland announced through a news release published on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook social media accounts on Sunday morning that it had suspended an active search for a boater who had been missing in the vicinity of Aransas Pass since the crash happened early Saturday morning.

Coast Guard Sector Corpus Christi watch standers received a call around 5:28 a.m. on Saturday via VHF-FM channel 16 when a good Samaritan reported a collision between a recreational vehicle and a commercial tanker, the release stated.

Watch standers issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of an MH-65 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi and a 29-foot Response Boat from Coast Guard Station Port Aransas to begin searching, the release states.

Rescue crews from the Coast Guard and local partners searched by air and sea for about 44 combined hours since the initial report and covered more than 127 square miles.

The news release published Sunday morning stated that a good Samaritan and a pilot boat recovered three people in the water, one of whom was dead. Two of the riders were transferred to Emergency Medical Assistance.

Rescue crews involved in the search included the Coast Guard Corpus Christi, Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi, Coast Guard Station Port Aransas, Coast Guard Cutter Manta, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Aransas Pass Police Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Port of Corpus Christi Police Department.
