Montrose Harbor

Montrose Harbor is located on the northern edge of Lincoln Park, a short walk from Montrose Beach.  With a great neighborhood feel, Montrose offers outstanding northern views of the skyline, a strong dinghy fleet, and friendly boaters that call the harbor home.  Easy access to parks and beaches along with its location that straddles Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and Wrigleyville make it a favorite amongst families.  Home to the Corinthian Yacht Club, the harbor has 711 slips, mooring cans, and star docks that can accommodate boats from 25’-50’ in length.

Transient docking is available; please call the harbor directly for reservations any time after May 15.  Waste Pump-out equipment is provided on a no-charge basis.

Coordinates:

From Lake Shore Drive exit onto Montrose Dr. and head east.  The harbor office is on your right side by the Corinthian Yacht Club and harbor parking can be found in the lot to your left.  To access the south harbor follow Montrose Dr. to the right and the stop sign.

Montrose Harbor

The most northerly of Chicago’s harbors Montrose Harbor has 711 slips, mooring cans and star docks that can accommodate boats from 25 feet to 50 feet in length in length.

Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club

The Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club was founded in 1934 and has over 400 members. It is one of the oldest yacht clubs on the Great Lakes and hosts national regattas and weekend club racing. The harbor is well protected from weather and has an average depth of 18 feet.

Montrose Peninsula, Chicago, Illinois

The Montrose Peninsula itself was engineered by the city of Chicago in 1872 to provide more recreational space and a harbor for boats.  A system of cribs or revetments was constructed out into the lake, and the area behind them was then filled.  These original structures were built using wood pilings and rock-fill and covered with capstones.

Much of the land used in creating these land filled parks along the lakefront comes from the lake itself.  Engineers in the 1800’s could see that the long-shore currents carried the sand and other sediment to the south.  The majority of the sand is deposited at the south end of Lake Michigan in and immense sandbar called the Indiana Shoals. Specially designed ships dredged the Indiana Shoals in the late 1800’s to supply the sand needed for the proposed landfill shoreline. This expansion and improvement of Chicago’s parks began with the 1930s projects of the New Deal. The area along Lake Shore Drive in Chicago from Jackson Park to Montrose Harbor is actually a 15-mile chain of land entirely created by dredging, landfill and plantings which was accomplished with the labor of hundreds funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

Volunteers handle the bar! Bear's game on 2 TVs. They welcomed us and the prices can't be beat! Tips go to Junior Sailing!!! Love this place.

This place is totally ghetto and great! Went here for a friends' b'day on Saturday. If I had a boat, I'd dock it here. Very down to earth and friendly. HARD to find, though - when my cab pulled up, I thought it was a rest room building. Watch for the white anchor out front. Note: It is "Members Only" - just like the crazy jackets.

I came here with some friends after a long hot day because we wanted ice cream. The staff members were unwelcoming and made it feel as though we were in a hostile environment. We asked for a plastic spoon and the woman behind the counter visibly rolled her eyes at us. She then aggressively tossed the utensil on the counter. This was an awful first impression. I don't see myself ever going back again. Thank you for ruining my day! Btw your ice cream is trash

A small but well stocked bar and a very friendly crowd and bartender make this place a gem!

My girlfriend and I just became members and the place is great. The club is immaculate, the views are incredible and the other members are extremely friendly and welcoming. They have a great bar with the cheapest drink prices on earth and the food is surprisingly good with a much larger menu selection than you would expect. It is very easy to get there...we use the lakefront bike trail which is also pleasant. This is a private club but CCYC routinely allows visitors. Membership fees are reasonable, and you don't necessarily need to have a boat in the harbor; an affiliate membership is available but you can't game the system here. If you are a member then you can attend various year-round social events. If you don't want to join then go there as a visitor, be nice, and maybe they'll invite you to an event as a guest. If you want to learn how to sail, this is the best program on the North side. Can't say enough good things about CCYC!

The cheapest place to learn how to sail in Chicago, and believe me I looked. $140, which includes books, materials, all of the classes on a USB drive, gloves, and a pizza party for graduation. Plus they'll set you up with a skipper.

The approach to Montrose Harbor is clear. The harbor itself is tucked away on the south side of a point of land. Look for the Fl GREEN light on the Wilson Ave Breakwater which is visible approximately 7 nm offshore in good weather. South of the Fl GREEN light will be the Montrose Breakwater light - a Fl RED light. Follow the shoreline coming around the point to the harbor entrance which is right alongside the mainland. It is marked with a Fl GREEN and Fl RED light.

These exclusive yachting clubs with often outrageous initiation fees, provide luxurious clubhouses, and provide accommodations for yachties who want to get their land legs. Yacht Clubs have been recognized in the Platinum Clubs of America elections for more than 20 years. According to the Platinum Club, “Recognition in the following categories is important in the selection of Platinum status; Tradition, history, and heritage, a respected membership, excellence in amenities, exceptional service, adapting to changing times, and overall experience.

I spoke with the President of Club Leaders Forum, David V. Smith, about the selection, and he says, “we created an alphabetical selection this time as opposed to by rank because we felt that it was challenging to compare a yacht club in Ireland with a yacht club in Singapore, as amenities, location and facilities do vary quite a lot. The yachting and boating world is a different and unique culture, typically a little more relaxed and not as formal as country clubs and golf clubs. However, many of the world’s finest yacht clubs have wonderful history and traditions, with a great sense of camaraderie among their members. Certain yacht clubs were selected by the Panel not necessarily for their facilities and amenities but in their recognition of hosting world class sailing regattas and events.”

Annapolis Yacht Club

Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs.

Beach Point Club is a member-owned, family-oriented private club. The elegant and spacious clubhouse was built in the 1890s by an industrialist as a private home. In 1925 the property was purchased by the founding members with the purpose of establishing a club on the water. The club now has more than 600 members with a full service marina.

Chicago Yacht Club

Founded in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the world. The Club is home to more than 1,400 members, including a winning America’s Cup skipper, and Olympic medalists.

Larchmont Yacht Club

Located in Westchester County, New York, the Club has been in existence since 1880 when it was purchased by Benjamin A. Carver, a railroad magnate. The original Carver residence was much smaller than the present clubhouse – the east and west wings were added following the purchase. The Junior Clubhouse was the Carver stable: the basement was the cow barn, while the first floor housed the horses.

Lauderdale Yacht Club

Founded in 1938, Lauderdale Yacht Club is invitation only and host to 65 dock slips that wrap around the marina. The club is also home to one of the most elite junior sailing programs in the nation.

Naples Yacht Club

Founded in 1947 and situated on Naples Bay, the Club has the proud distinction of being the city’s first and oldest private club and its marina has 75 concrete floating docks. Membership has grown from three founding yachtsmen to over 530.

Newport Harbor Yacht Club

Established in 1916, the club is located on the Balboa peninsula in Southern California. A newly remodeled clubhouse was also created to replace the original building. Initiation fees range upwards of $20,000

With 190 wet slips and direct access to the Gulf of Mexico, the club can accommodate vessels up to 55 feet. Equity social membership is by invitation only with an initiation fee as high as $15,000, and annual dues at $5,500.

Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club

Founded in 1959, the club has been part of the Boca Raton landscape for over 50 years with membership by invitation only. The state-of-the-art Marina boasts a TimberTech floating dock system, accommodating vessels up to 130 feet. 

Sailfish Club of Florida

The Sailfish Club of Florida was built in the early 1900s. It is the oldest continuously operating private club in the town of Palm Beach.

San Diego Yacht Club

In June of 1886 a group of local boating enthusiasts joined together to found what has become this cornerstone yacht club. The racing history of SDYC is as significant as the history of its location. Several members were winning races all over the country in the early to mid-20th century, however, SDYC reached a turning point starting in the 1980s when Dennis Conner won the America’s Cup. In the early 1980s, Dennis Conner won the cup once and then lost it the next time to New York Yacht Club. In 1987, Dennis won again on behalf of San Diego Yacht Club. The America’s Cup was won a third time by SDYC in 1992 by Bill Koch on the yacht,  America .

With 600 wet slips and 100 dry slips, initiation fee is upwards of $24,000 plus $200 monthly dues.

San Francisco Yacht Club

In the summer of 1869, a group of active, local yachtsmen formed the San Francisco Yacht Club. The oldest yacht club on the Pacific Coast, it’s one of the most elegant and exclusive yacht clubs in the U.S. The harbor consists of 190 berths and 50 dry-storage spaces, as well as a large youth sailing dock. Membership is by sponsor referral only.

Sarasota Yacht Club was organized in the summer of 1907 and located on the north end of Siesta Key. Facilities include a 110-slip marina, fitness center, heated pool, two indoor bars, a pool bar, multiple meeting rooms, a grand dining room, waterside terrace, and lunch dock. Membership is by invitation only.

Savannah Yacht Club

The Savannah Yacht Club was originally organized on June 14, 1869. The private, members only club is by invitation only with only 1,000 members. Amenities include a figure 8 pool, an Olympic size swimming pool, as well as floating docks.

St. Francis Yacht Club

This club was founded in 1927 when the members of the San Francisco Yacht Club decided to move their clubhouse out of San Francisco to Belvedere, California. The 2,300 member club is considered to be the most prestigious yacht club in the western U.S. and has hosted over 40 regattas on San Francisco Bay. The Mediterranean Revival-style clubhouse is in close proximity to the Golden Gate Bridge and enjoys views from the Bridge to Alcatraz Island and beyond.

Founded in 1904 as a place to race sailboats, ride and show horses, the marina now holds 31 covered slips and 50 open slips. Membership is sponsored and by invitation only.

Sometime in the early 1600s, sailing for private pleasure started to to become popular in the Netherlands. Later that century, during the Cromwellian years, King Charles II of England was in exile in the Netherlands and while there he became aware of this new and exciting pastime. According to Royal Cork Yacht Club, “By 1720, interest in the sport had progressed so much that his great-grandson, the 26 year old William O’Brien, the 9th Lord Inchiquin, and five of his friends got together to formalize their activities and in so doing established ” The Water Club of the Harbour of Cork.”

This club is known today as the Royal Cork Yacht Club and it is the oldest yacht club in the world. It was originally located on Haulbowline Island before moving to the town of Cobh and finally establisged in it's current location in Crosshaven.

Founded by Prince Rainier III in 1953, the Yacht Club De Monaco is a prestigious club that holds a unique position on the international yachting scene with more than 1600 members drawn from 66 nationalities.

The reigning Club President since 1984 has been His Royal Highness, Prince Sovereign Albert II, and a suitably formal dress code for day and evening wear is enforced at all times. Membership is limited and very, very exclusive: prospective candidates must submit an application form to the club committee and be introduced by two sponsors, both of whom must be existing members. The successful applicant will be welcomed with an ice-breaking cocktail party and gala dinner in their honor.

The futuristic clubhouse was redesigned in 2013 and overlooks Port Hercules, it offers up very popular cocktail bar and Mediterranean restaurant.

Belmont Harbor is located in the heart of beautiful Lincoln Park and is one of the largest harbors in the Chicago Harbors system.  A favorite among families and long-time boaters, the harbor is surrounded by acres of park space and a beautiful skyline view to the south.  There are 818 slips, mooring cans, and star docks that can accommodate boats from 28’-80’+ in length.  Belmont Harbor is the home of several yacht clubs including Chicago Yacht Club’s Belmont Station and Belmont Yacht Club.

Transient docking is available; you can submit reservation requests through the Dockwa app or website beginning May 1st.  Belmont Harbor has a fuel dock facility, with gas and diesel fuels.  Additionally, there is a mast stepping/unstepping capability at the Harbor Building (reservations required).  Dry storage available.  Waste pump-out equipment is available on a no-charge basis. The harbor monitors channels 9 and 16 and the switch to/working channel is 69.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length.
