A 384-foot Explorer Superyacht?

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: October 29, 2018

Goliath Series Polar alexis

Alexis is a 384-foot, nine-deck Explorer Yacht Concept from Steve Kozloff, founder and designer of the Goliath Series of polar-class expedition yachts.

If an owner is traveling to northern latitudes, the designer says the full-displacement yacht will have an ice-class steel hull, aluminum superstructure as well heated handrails and doors to mitigate ice buildup.

Standard engines will be four 16-cylinder, Cummins QSK60-M diesel-electric powerplants for 8,000 total hp. For perspective, each engine weighs about 19,300 pounds. That’s big iron. The motors will be matched to four azipods.

Alexis is expected to cruise at 10 knots with a 14.2-knot top-end. The designer says the yacht will have globe-girdling range: 22,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. It’s a trip that requires some serious fuel and Alexis will reportedly hold 432,000 gallons or 1,728 tons of diesel.

For the owner that likes to fly, the yacht is designed with 3,000 square feet of hangar space, which the designer says should accommodate four small helicopters or three medium helicopters. Her garage can reportedly accommodate, not one, but two submarines, several tenders and other assorted water toys.

The superyacht’s design includes a master suite aft with a private pool. The pool will have a retractable cover. A second pool for guests, located on the foredeck, will also have a retractable cover.

Goliath Series Polar alexis

The builder says the explorer-style superyacht will have three master suites, plus seven twin guest staterooms with accommodations for 20 guests for extended voyaging.

Stay tuned for more on this yacht’s development.

EYOS announces strategic alliance with Nansen Polar Expeditions

Image for article EYOS announces strategic alliance with Nansen Polar Expeditions

EYOS Expeditions and Nansen Polar Expeditions have joined forces on a long-term strategic alliance coinciding with Nansen’s recent fleet expansion. Together, EYOS and Nansen will combine their collective experience to introduce a new expedition yacht experience in the polar regions.

Nansen Polar Expeditions has been operational since 2019 with their first vessel MV Villa , a rugged yet luxurious expedition ship, and recently-acquired MV Nansen Explorer , a 72m ICE 1A+ vessel that will accommodate 12 guests following an extensive refit. With more than a decade of experience operating private yacht expeditions to the polar regions, EYOS will take on the expedition management and charter sales for this exciting new addition to the fleet.

“One of the most exciting elements of our new alliance with Nansen Polar Expeditions is the ability to go beyond the boundaries of a typical expedition,” comments EYOS CEO Ben Lyons. “Given the high ice-class and helicopter capability of MV Nansen Explorer , we intend to reach destinations far removed from even where most expedition vessels are sailing, and certainly well out of reach of a conventional superyacht.”

Nansen Polar Expeditions CEO Audun Lie Dahl adds; “Working so closely with EYOS on this multi- faceted alliance opens up new markets and opportunities for both companies. There is a great personal connection and history between us, and we couldn’t have found a better partner as we continue to expand our fleet.”

Further details on the alliance and new itineraries starting in Q4 2021 will be announced in May.

This Insane Superyacht Concept Is 384 Feet of Exploration with a Helipad, Hangar, and a Submarine Garage

384-foot Alexis polar-explorer yacht from Goliath

Designer Steve Kozloff, creator of the Goliath polar-explorer series , recently unveiled its most impressive member yet. The Alexis design blends grace and bulk across six decks. The 384-foot behemoth looks like the ultimate expedition yacht, or even a sizable research vessel, designed to explore the ends of the earth .

The California-based Kozloff incorporated a lot of luxury into the polar-class hull, including features like a swimming pool on the bow and another for the owner’s private use on the stern. And Alexis not only has a certified helipad, but also a 3,000-square-foot hangar, with enough space for four small helicopters . Kozloff designed the landing pad so that the boat’s fleet of aircraft could take off and land in all conditions, and then be safely stored in the hangar out of the elements. Having different types of helicopters turns the yacht into a base for exploring remote, out-of-the-way land destinations that cannot be reached any other way.

Kozloff’s laser-focused attention to detail makes Alexis more than just the usual explorer concept. The two pools, for instance, have hard retractable covers so the pools do not have to be drained. That’s a detail that many superyacht crews, who have to drain thousands of gallons from superyacht pools before traveling, will appreciate.

Other features include heated handrails and doors to mitigate icing problems while visiting cold regions. The ice-class hull is even designed for breaking through moderate ice. Alexis also has an unusually large tender garage that holds two submarines , multiple tenders, and many other water toys. Plus, there are four “freefall” lifeboats that can be launched in all conditions.

Inside the intrepid, go-anywhere exterior are not one, but three master suites, and luxury accommodations for up to 20 guests. The exterior spaces forward are designed for guest use, featuring a handsome stair-step series of decks amidships that culminate in an outdoor sky bar on the top deck. The swim platform at the stern of the yacht is a special place for the owner to enjoy private and immediate access to the water.

If Alexis is ever built, it promises to be one of the most magnificent explorer yachts ever, a vessel that can travel anywhere without skimping on the luxuries that make yachting special.

SEAXPLORER SERIES

Whether you choose the 105m, 77m, or 60m version, or a full custom, SeaXplorer is the most capable and efficient luxury expedition yacht ever built.

EYOS EXPERTISE

polar expedition yacht

To help create the ideal globally-capable expedition yacht, EYOS Expeditions took over 150 design criteria to DAMEN shipyard. Working with DAMEN’s design team, EYOS advised on details from the hull form and bridge layout to the tender davits and Zodiac boarding arrangements.

SeaXplorer was the first yacht built to meet the new Polar Code Standards, which came into force in 2017. While her entire hull is ice-strengthened, in the most challenging ice conditions, SeaXplorer can go astern using a specially shaped icebreaking stern to break through boundaries that stop other yachts.

A fully certified, enclosed helicopter hangar keeps your aircraft safe no matter where you take your yacht.

Built with remote destinations in mind, SeaXplorer achieves an unprecedented 40 days of autonomy. Her guests will define their own limits; SeaXplorer offers true exclusivity far beyond the reach of others.

Despite her rugged capability,  SeaXplorer  is still very much a luxury yacht. Stunning spaces connect guests to the outside world and passing scenery. Thanks to the Damen/Amels synergy, the yacht meets the highest standards for which renowned Dutch yacht builders are known.

SeaXplorer is the pinnacle of expedition super yachting. She is the globally-capable, true luxury yacht we’ve been waiting for. EYOS is proud to have worked with Damen and Amels on this outstanding series of yachts.

This Antarctica Adventure Stands Alone

  • An Exclusive Itinerary— No One Else Offers This Particular Journey This expedition yacht-based itinerary is offered exclusively by Natural Habitat Adventures and WWF. While others cross the Drake Passage via cruise ship, we do it like the legendary explorers of old did—on a smaller expedition vessel! Except our modern motorsailer has an ice-strengthened steel hull and state-of-the-art navigation and safety equipment, ensuring that our thrilling voyage is also a much safer one than ardent explorers endured a century ago.
  • A Small-Group Wilderness Immersion for Just Seven Travelers We take a maximum of seven guests. Most Antarctica cruise ships carry from 50 to 150 passengers and sometimes many more. On such voyages, you’re in the most remote place on the planet, yet you never get a break from the presence of many traveling companions, nor the noise of the ship. Our small-scale journey ensures a profound sense of solitude and quiet, which are ironically rare commodities on most Antarctica journeys. You'll feel like you're on a private expedition.
  • More Time Ashore, Alone...and More Flexibility Most ship-based Antarctica voyages generally spend 4–6 days making shore excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula. On our sailing expedition, you'll have up to 10 days (depending on weather) to explore remote coves, beaches and icebound headlands, generally on our own and away from the crowds that are inevitable with larger ships. And, because our timing is more flexible, we have added freedom to craft the rhythm of our days as each group prefers.
  • Exclusive Camping Opportunities While some ships offer a chance for a single night’s camping on the ice, it happens in the company of up to 50 or 60 fellow travelers—not exactly the feel of a remote wilderness experience. Plus, these groups must arrive after dinner and be out by 5:30 am. It's really just a quick chance to sleep on the ice in the vicinity of many other people. We, however, hold special permits that allow us to spend up to three nights camping ashore (weather permitting), in locations far from other human presence. When we camp, it’s just us and the penguins and seals. While camping is optional (you're welcome to sleep aboard the boat instead), it’s usually a major highlight of our travelers’ experience.
  • Extended Hiking Ashore for a True Wilderness Encounter Most visitors who travel to Antarctica aboard larger ships go ashore and essentially stand on the beach, perhaps walking a short distance in large groups. While even this opportunity can be exciting, often among multitudes of penguins, it pales in comparison to the chance to really explore away from crowds. Our small group is able to hike farther, by ourselves, in the vast, pristine silence of the polar world. This is a genuine wilderness experience, and it isn't available on other itineraries.
  • Guided Small-Group Kayaking Excursions Optional opportunities for kayaking are included, and you are accompanied by our experienced Expedition Leader on exciting short excursions. We explore the shoreline in very small groups to ensure the quietest and most intimate wildlife encounters. (Kayak outings from larger ships often include groups of 20 or more.) Also, when you're kayaking with just a few individuals, you receive personalized attention from our Expedition Leader to help you improve your paddling skills quickly and efficiently.
  • Sail with World-Class Polar Mariners We've scoured the globe to find the premier vessels, captains and crew for this extraordinary expedition. You can rest assured that you'll be in the hands of preeminently qualified mariners with in-depth experience in polar waters as we cross the Drake Passage and navigate the crenellated coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. All have extensive training in offshore safety and sea survival in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic waters.
  • Highly Personalized Guiding   While most Antarctica ship operators travel with onboard experts from naturalists to polar historians, few guests have a chance to interact with them personally. Most are consigned to attending lectures in the ship's lounge, rather than traveling alongside the ship's staff, asking myriad questions and developing the kind of friendship that typically accompanies any genuine shared adventure. In contrast, our naturalist Expedition Leader provides a level of personalized service you won't find on other Antarctica trips. With tremendous depth of knowledge and experience in the polar realm, as well as training and resources from WWF’s renowned scientists, our guide embodies why we hold a global reputation for hiring the very best! See Expedition Leader bios with traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Top-Quality Expeditionary Equipment As part of our unwavering commitment to safety and comfort, we provide state-of-the-art equipment, including top-quality safety and survival gear, tents, kayaks and camping equipment. Our gear is meticulously maintained, reducing the chance for unexpected mishaps as we travel.
  • Our Quality–Value Guarantee Ensures Your Antarctica Expedition With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive quality and value guarantee, clearly stating that we will meet the lofty expectations we set in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. It’s for the ultimate seafaring sports fan — and history buff.

A lavish superyacht designed to resemble a centuries-old galleon — and featuring full-sized basketball, tennis and handball courts — is being pitched by a California ship designer.

Steve Kozloff’s The Galleon involves eight decks boasting hoards of extravagant goodies that can be custom-arranged for buyers — who are wealthy enough to foot its roughly $750 million price tag.

The striking nearly 525-foot luxury ship, complete with four massive sails, could hold up to 200 guests and 150 crewmembers, Kozloff said.

“I liked the style of the Old World galleons, especially the glass work at the stern,’’ the ship designer told The Post on Tuesday. “I wanted to imitate that feature.

“Plus, I want to encourage the cruise industry to be more green,’’ he said of the yacht, which would have a hybrid diesel-electric engine in addition to its sails.

The ship’s planned features include the sports facilities, plus a pair of swimming pools and two “lazy rivers.”

It also includes a helipad and 4,500-square-foot hanger for high-flying guests, not to mention room for six speedboats, four submarines and other smaller watercraft.

Additional onboard entertainment could be found at the ship’s cafe, bar and restaurant.

Kozloff said the price depends on how far buyers want to plunk down on the yacht’s interior furnishings, adding that it would take about $750 million for it to be “properly outfitted.” He said the masts alone cost around $140 million.

The Galleon is considered an “explorer’’ yacht, meaning it could cruise the world at more than 20 mph with a steel hull able to cut through ice floes.

Its length is 70 feet less than the world’s longest yacht, the Azzam, which is reportedly owned by royals from the United Arab Emirates.
