Swanky sailor: reviewing the rolex oyster perpetual yacht-master.

yacht master sailor

In this feature from the WatchTime archives, we take a close look at the modern version of Rolex ’s Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master , with black Cerachrom bezel and Oysterflex bracelet. Original photos are by Nik Schölzel.

A water-resistant Oyster case, large hour markers and bold hands are essential elements of Rolex’s Submariner , introduced in 1953 and made for use underwater. In contrast, Rolex’s Yacht-Master, launched in 1992, is a luxury liner – equally at home on board a yacht on the high seas or on land at a ritzy yacht club. But to enjoy this luxury you’ll need to pay almost $25,000 for the 40-mm Everose gold and Cerachrom ceramic version shown here. Stainless-steel versions of the Yacht-Master are priced about $13,000 less.

The Yacht-Master was the first watch in Rolex’s Professional Oyster Collection to come in three different case sizes: 29, 35 and 40 mm. The model we tested, launched last year, is offered in two sizes: 37 and 40 mm. We chose the larger version, which we measured at precisely 40.19 mm in diameter and 11.49 mm in height (excluding the magnifying “Cyclops” lens for the date).

The well-known Cyclops date lens was patented by Rolex in 1953 and introduced in 1954 on the Datejust. This magnifying device is made of sapphire, like the watch’s crystal, and has nonreflective coating on both sides. The jumping date advances exactly at midnight.

The watch is powered by a seasoned caliber, the Rolex 3135, used in the very first Yacht-Master in 1992. The 3135 debuted in 1988 in the Submariner. The blue Parachrom balance spring was added to the movement in 2005, five years after it was first introduced in the Cosmograph Daytona. Its paramagnetic alloy resists changes caused by temperature variations and magnetic fields.

The Parachrom balance spring is thinner than a human hair and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks than a conventional balance spring. Provided with an overcoil, it is attached to a large balance wheel with a variable moment of inertia. Fine adjustments are made using four gold Microstella regulating screws. The balance wheel is supported by a height-adjustable bridge. The entire construction ensures rate results that bring the Yacht-Master (as well as the other watches in the Oyster collection) to the rank of “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified.” These words on the Yacht-Master’s dial mean that the watch has endured 15 days and nights of testing by COSC in addition to a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratory. Acceptable rate results for a Superlative Chronometer allow deviations of less than +/-2 seconds per day, while COSC’s test permits average deviations between -4 and +6 seconds per day. In addition, Rolex’s tests are carried out under conditions that correspond more closely to real-life situations than COSC’s tests and are conducted on fully assembled watches, while COSC tests just the movements.

We, too, tested the finished watch – fully wound and after running for 24 hours – first in five positions on the timing machine and then with a two-week wearing test on the wrist (or simulated on a winding machine). In our tests, the Yacht-Master remained within the standards specified by Rolex for a Superlative Chronometer. On the wrist it showed virtually no deviations over the two-week period. On the timing machine it showed a gain of about 1 second per day with minimal variations among the positions.

The tests performed by Rolex include a water-resistance check. Unlike the Submariner, the Yacht-Master’s water resistance is “only” 100 meters. This means that the Yacht-Master is not designed to be a professional dive watch , which requires water resistance of at least 200 meters.

The Yacht-Master’s bidirectional bezel also keeps it from being a dive watch. The bezel on a dive watch usually rotates in only one direction so it won’t show a shorter dive time if it’s repositioned inadvertently. But the Yacht-Master’s bezel is impressive: it has 120 ratchets and shows graduations in 5-minute increments using both Arabic numerals and line markers. The first quarter has well-defined minutes markers. Polished, raised graduations on the ceramic inlay stand in relief against a sandblasted, matte black background. The bezel is made of Cerachrom, Rolex’s ceramic material. The Ceramic inlay is set in a deeply grooved ring made of Everose gold, Rolex’s rose-gold alloy. A grooved caseback seals the case hermetically and can only be opened using a special tool. Three dots on the screw-down crown indicate that this watch has been sealed with the Triplock sealing system, a triple water- resistance system developed by Rolex.

The screw-down crown sits securely inside the case between two crown guards. Releasing the crown allows it to spring away from the midsection, which makes it easy to use for manual winding, rapid date change and setting the hands.

The dial has a characteristic Rolex look. The applied markers and elongated triangle at 12 o’clock are filled with Rolex’s luminous substance, Chromalight, and are displayed on a matte black background. The hour hand has a “Mercedes” circle filled with Chromalight and the seconds hand has a luminous Chromalight dot. The stark contrast of black and white ensures excellent legibility during the day; at night the Chromalight emits a blue glow for easy reading in the dark.

This watch is the first Rolex with an Oysterflex bracelet. (We use the term “bracelet” rather than “strap” because the Oysterflex, unlike standard rubber straps, has metal on the inside.) Combining a rubber strap with a gold case is nothing new, but at Rolex, known for its conservative approach to design, it’s a major innovation. The patented bracelet has a core made of nickel-titanium alloy blades, which provide excellent flexibility and are coated with a black elastomer, a synthetic type of rubber. When the material is subjected to tension and pressure, it returns to its original shape quickly. It resists environmental changes and is long lasting, waterproof and hypoallergenic – a good alternative to a metal bracelet. The bracelet’s black color goes well with the ceramic bezel and with the Everose gold case, presenting a modern, two-tone look.

Inside the bracelet is a patented cushioning system that increases wearing comfort. The bracelet accommodates changes in wrist size. The single-sided Oysterlock folding clasp made of Everose gold offers additional flexibility; it allows for three length adjustments. Screws attach the clasp securely to the bracelet. A safety bar makes opening the clasp more difficult but prevents it from opening accidentally.

gold on rubber = cool if one can afford it. I still prefer my S/S Y-M with PT dial & bezel = an understated goes everywhere quite comfortable piece. By the way… hardly mentioned BUT the curved lugs on all Yacht-Master models make for a wonderfully contoured fit + way better than straight lugs on most Rolex’

You’ll have to sell it to pay for the repairs for your yacht… but you’ll sure look good wearing it!

An interesting piece, shame about the poor out of focus photo’s !!!

May I request for an article or review regarding swiss made SELECTRON chronograph / computer watches made possibly during the 60s-70s?

That patent on the Cyclops would have expired over 40 years ago, meaning whatever it covered now can be freely-used by the public, I’m not sure it’s a bragging point (and, no, patents cannot be renewed).

This was a very nice watch. Is it automatic or manual? Do you know a good place to buy it?

Just aquired the YM 40 in Everose, stylish a touch sporty with a different look from my other Rolex’s.

Hey GW? Was wondering, since the article didn’t mention it, how is the rubber bracelet sized?

It actually comes with three different sizes, so you just pick the pair that works best for your wrist.

Sizing is a bit of a problem, I bought mine 2nd hand but never worn. AD will have various sizes in combination to make it fit. So if i were to sell it on that person may have a heck of a time getting it to fit.

Love the watch but I was told I had to wait a year to purchase the 40mm size in Canada. So, off I went and purchased a watch from a different manufacturerer!

Why make the consumer with cash in hand wait?

There are certainly other options available these days!

Old Caliber, a braclet which cannot be changed. What else can you expect from Rolex for a price about 24k Euro?

Yes, I agree. I don’t understand why they didn’t use the 3235 caliber.

Since spring 2019 they do use the 3235 movement.

Superb review of a superb Rolex. Thank you!

Hi, So does this mean that they have dumped the YM2 with its funny 10 second / minute countdown dial? I never liked the look of the YM2.

If they did it would explain why they are now available at Costco.

Truly lavishly stylish

Oh my goodness! Another lust object from Rolex (the origin of my watch, sorry chronometer, fetish). Faultless style and flash balanced with flawless functionality (OK, you can’t go all the way down). Opening my savings account now.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master is truly a fabulous watch and though it cost me a lot of money, I must say it is worth the money that I had to pay for it.

Over the years it has been quite accurate and did not cause me any difficulty till date.

Complication By Name: The Rolex Yachtmaster 2

yacht master sailor

Ask any Rolex collector or enthusiast what their favorite aspect of the brand is, and you can be sure that terms like ‘understated’ and ‘reserved’ will make up at least some of the conversation. The unobtrusive, almost minimalist design of models such as the Submariner or the Datejust have always been favored by people content with displaying only the most modest outward expression of their good taste.

Yacht-Master II 116680

The Rolex Yachtmaster 2 is not one of those designs. The Yacht-Master II is a huge, extrovert of a watch that’s outrageous in concept and screaming for attention.

It’s a massive departure for Rolex, the brand that, perhaps more than any other, exemplifies that discreetness for which the Swiss are so famous. The Yacht-Master II collection has a polarized opinion since its launch in 2007. There have been subtle upgrades that marked its 10 th birthday celebration, which have done nothing to quell the debate.

Let’s take a look at one of Rolex’s most controversial, technically impressive, and incredibly specific offerings.

A Complication Worthy of the Name

Despite its title, the Yacht-Master II is a completely new model rather than an update to the original Yacht-Master ref 16622. That previous namesake, released in 1992, had very little to justify its moniker other than the standard Oyster waterproofing. There were no explicit functions aimed at making life on the ocean waves any easier.

The Yacht-Master II on the other hand, was designed to solve that age-old problem we’ve all struggled with on so many occasions—timing the starting sequence of a sailing regatta!

Yacht-Master II 116680

Ok, so that’s a pretty niche problem, but it does exist and the solution Rolex manufactured is nothing short of spectacular. Even the Yacht-Master II’s detractors agree that its unique complication is simply remarkable.

With only a few exceptions, such as the Daytona’s chronograph movement and the annual calendar on the Sky-Dweller, Rolex has rarely included complications beyond a date feature into its catalogue. So the ultra-complex programmable countdown with mechanical memory on the Yacht-Master II is all the more fascinating.

How Does it Work?

The start of a regatta is a convoluted affair, generally involving several distinct phases, and having a way to precisely coordinate the timing of each stage is vital.

With the wind being what it is, yachts can’t just sit at the start line of a race waiting for the off. Skippers have to maneuver their boats back and forth without crossing the line for a specified length of time before the race begins, usually between five and 10 minutes. The perfect watch for yachting, especially if you partake in events such as the Rolex Fastnet .

The start of this countdown is signaled by a gunshot and is followed by two further preparatory signals at set intervals to allow crews to coordinate their approach. Cross the start line too early and they’ll incur a penalty, too late and they risk bringing up the rear for the rest of the proceedings.

This was the multifaceted problem facing Rolex. It wasn’t enough for the Rolex Yachtmaster 2 just to be able to measure intervals of time. Because of the nature of a regatta’s starting procedure and the split-second timing involved, skippers need to be able to synchronize their watches with the race’s official countdown timer ‘on-the-fly’.

Rolex Yachtmaster 2

To achieve all this while still keeping the watch manageable in both size and operation has taken some brilliant ingenuity. The key to this timepiece is the bezel, which is now directly connected to the movement and has become intrinsically linked to the functionality. Known as the Ring Command Bezel, rotating it through 90° unlocks the programming operations of the watch. Turning the crown sets the countdown duration, and returning the bezel to its start position locks and memorizes the setting.

The countdown is started by pressing the top pusher, with the elapsed seconds indicated by the sweep hand on the center dial and the minutes by the red arrow hand on the internal horseshoe-shaped gauge.

Should you need to adjust the watch’s countdown at any time, if you started it too early or late, for example, simply pressing the lower pusher causes the seconds hand to reset—to ‘fly back’ to its starting position. The red arrow hand also synchronizes to the nearest minute to compensate for any discrepancy.

The Rolex Caliber 4161

The power behind all this technical virtuosity is Rolex’s own, in-house self-winding movement, the Caliber 4161.

Based on the 4130 from the Daytona, the two share several important features, such as the blue Parachrom hairspring in the oscillator that offers up to 10 times more shock resistance than traditional movements, plus a 72-hour power reserve.

Yacht-Master II 116680

Even with the 4130 as a base, the Yacht-Master II’s movement still took Rolex around 35,000 hours to perfect and is built up of over 360 separate components. Accurate to within two seconds a day, like all Rolex Perpetual Movements, it surpasses the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests for precision and reliability and carries Rolex’s own Superlative Chronometer certification.

New for the 2017 Version of the Yacht-Master II 116680

Perhaps the only subtle thing about the Rolex Yachtmaster 2 is the facelift it enjoyed on its 10 th anniversary this year. All the delicate upgrades were confined to the dial, with the inner workings being left well alone.

The 12 and 6 markers were changed from the squares shared by the rest of the indices to a triangle and rectangle respectively. To further aid legibility, the hands were also updated—where the previous model had thin batons, the hour hand is now the iconic Mercedes figure, with a luminescent disk. The minute hand, while still baton shaped, now has a cutout section to avoid obscuring the regatta countdown.

Yacht-Master II 116680

The new dial is carried over onto all four of the Yacht-Master II’s models—the 904L steel, the Everose Rolesor, the yellow gold, and the white gold and platinum. Each finish carries the same reference number as the 2007 originals.

The Rolex Yachtmaster 2: A Big Watch For Big Personalities

Rolex launched multiple watches at Baselworld 2017 , but the Yacht-Master II certainly splits opinions like the Sea-Dweller. It won’t be found on the wrist of the shy and retiring. But is your average professional sailor or yacht owner someone who generally likes to blend into the background?

With its extravagant color scheme and imposing physical size—at 44mm, it’s the biggest reference in the Rolex lineup—there’s no danger of anyone mistaking it for anything else.

But whether it’s your thing or not, it remains a brilliant example of the watchmaker’s art.

The Sailor’s Chronograph: The Rolex Yacht Master II In Action

Find out how a Rolex Yach Master II is actually used to time a countdown in a regatta.

rolex yacht master ii

By Hayden Coplen

If you’re part of the rarified strata of people who can afford a Yacht-Master II, surely one could understand if you kept it on land during its lifespan, placed carefully in a safe like wearable art, with its striking blue bezel making an appearance on only the grandest of occasions. However, to really see the chronograph in it’s finest moments, living out it’s born purpose, you should race a sailboat with it.

I learned this firsthand at the Rolex TP52 World Championship in Cascais, Portugal this July, where dozens of the world’s best sailors, including numerous Olympians and America’s Cup winners, competed against each other on nine nearly identical 52-foot carbon fiber racing yachts (Rolex has been involved in the yachting world for over 60 years). Because the boats in this class are so similar, and the sailors so accomplished, the entire race is often decided by tiny adjustments and critical moments–the most notable of which is the starting sequence. In fact, a race really begins five minutes before the opening flag, with boats performing a delicate ballet for prime starting position, weaving and circling within feet of one another. The goal is to cross the starting line at maximum speed the moment the countdown hits zero, but not a second early.

Rolex-Yachtmaster-Racing-Gear-Patrol-Ambiacne

Here’s how it works: two boats, helmed by race officials, position themselves across a small span of ocean and drop anchors to mark themselves as the starting line. Once they are anchored in place, a voice arises through a crackling two-way radio, “5, 4, 3, 2, 1,” it says, counting down to a group of eager sailors ready to synchronize their clocks to the official race timing. Then, a horn sounds, a flag is raised, and the voice declares, “5 minutes.”

At this moment, the boats begin showing their strategy for the first time. Some are already far removed from the starting line, moving forward at a measured speed and finding their pace. Others, like the American-owned boat and eventual winner Quantum , broadcast a more unique strategy, crossing the starting line exactly at the 5-minute warning, before soon circling back and aggressively butting into a line of their competitors moments before the official start.

During the countdown, the navigator of a boat is interpreting a variety of factors, like true wind angle, current, boat speed, and GPS location to deliver updates to his team about its ideal path to the starting line, and he’s doing all this while watching the clock. “10 seconds early,” he may chime in – or, ideally, he will say nothing at all.

“The start of the race is where the cards are dealt,” five-time Olympic medalist and helmsman of the Onda , Robert Scheidt told me. “And a quiet boat is a fast boat.”

The Yachtmaster II was designed with this exacting sequence in mind. When set, the watch displays the countdown in a way that is easily legible. The running seconds appear on a central sub-dial, and the countdown minutes are indicated by a red-tipped hand that points to an inner minute scale. Because not all regattas have a five-minute starting sequence, Rolex engineers spent 35,000 hours devising a new movement, the calibre 4161, that allows the watch to adapt to countdowns of between 1 and 10 minutes in conjunction with the rotating bezel and the crown. The watch then mechanically “memorizes” the programmed countdown time and will return to the same duration after reset.

Rolex-Yachtmaster-Racing-Gear-Patrol-Ambiacne-1

Further, the Yachtmaster II features flyback/forward synchronization that allows for maximum accuracy; in addition to standard flyback operation, the Yachmaster has the ability to fly-forward the fourth hand to the nearest minute at the push of a button while the countdown continues (this is useful if, for instance, the race officials give notice via a pistol shot of a certain number of minutes remaining and the user has to synchronize the watch).

“The start of the race is where the cards are dealt,” five-time Olympic medalist and helmsman of the Onda, Robert Scheidt told me. “And a quiet boat is a fast boat.”

In the Atlantic Ocean, about one nautical mile offshore from Portugal, race officials have just issued the 1-minute countdown in the final race. The air is tense, and almost eerily silent near the starting line. The only noise is the creak of drum-tight carbon fiber sails as the boats zig and zag towards the starting line, approaching speeds of 25 knots. Quantum sneaks in next to another boat and takes a daring left turn to cut it off and claim its patch of ocean. Then, officials chime in, “3, 2, 1″ – at this moment, with mere feet separating the nine boats from one another, they cross the starting line, and the race is underway. Quantum has found open air, the ballet concludes, and the seconds glide by.

“The rich get richer,” is often said in sailing to describe the importance of a lead at the start, meaning that the leading boat will enjoy clean wind, open sea. and unobstructed turning angles. Even the smallest differences at this starting moment can feel like a foregone conclusion for the race – for example, after a disappointing 8th place-finish on the penultimate day of the regatta, Platoon owner Harm Muller Spreer gave a simple post-mortem. “We missed the start by 30 meters,” he said…

The key to victory, it would seem, is indeed in the countdown.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Daytona: Wristwatch Comparison

If you’re in the market for a high-end watch and you’ve settled on the Rolex Yacht-Master or the Rolex Daytona , the reality is that you can’t go wrong—both are backed by the trusted Rolex brand, after all. Nevertheless, each series of watches includes select options and unique features that might give you the edge you’re looking for. Today we are comparing the Rolex Yachtmaster vs Daytona.

From reviewing the specifications and highlights of each watch, on the whole, I prefer the Yacht-Master series—specifically the original Yacht-Master collection (we’ll get to that)—to the Daytona line, on account of its slim, sleek contour and (to-be-expected) reliability. That said, there is much to recommend the later Yacht-Master II and the Daytona, and if you are primarily looking to fill a technical, functional need with your watch purchase, then the original Yacht-Master, the simplest of the three, may not be the best choice.

First things first, choosing a watch from the Rolex line means several certainties: you know you’re getting a reliable and durable chronograph, you know you’re adding a stylish piece of apparel to your wardrobe, and you know that every time you put it on, you’ll have wandering eyes fixated in envy on your classic timepiece.

But this isn’t a decision to take lightly. It’s an expensive investment, and not all watches—even high-end ones—are made equally. In this case, it isn’t just a question of “Are you a sailor (Yacht-Master) or a racer (Daytona)?” The Daytona series has a design optimized for measuring high speeds, while the Yacht-Master provides additional timekeeping functions the likes of which you might find handy during a regatta . Let’s take a closer look at all they can do.

rolex yachtmaster vs daytona

The Yacht-Master

The yacht-master ii, the rolex cosmograph daytona: the ultimate chronograph, related posts, the rolex yacht-master: the watch of the open seas, official description.

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the spirit of the sailor. Inspired by the rich heritage that has bound Rolex to the world of sailing since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master blends function and style, while the Yacht-Master II brings together the finest in Rolex technology to create a regatta chronograph built for yachting competition.

As the description notes, choosing the Yacht-Master series means making another choice: the original Yacht-Master (debuted in 1992), or the Yacht-Master II (first released in 2007).

The headline model of the  Yacht-Master  series is the Yacht-Master 40 , though Rolex also released a slightly smaller option, the Yacht-Master 37 . For the purpose of this review, I will focus on the headline model, but both the 40mm and the 37mm options can be configured to the buyer’s preference in terms of material, color, and dial type.

The headline model, reference number 116655, is designed with an Everose gold trim, a black watch-face, and the Rolex patented rubber Oyster strap, the first rubber strap on any model of Rolex watch. The Oysterflex strap, branded as a sporty alternative to the typical metal strap , is also hypoallergenic, so allay any concerns you may have in that regard.

The design, though uncommon, is not unbecoming.  It matches the aesthetic of the chic watch face well, and in fact, the slim style of the rubber strap carries its own elegance that matches the rather svelte original Yacht-Master .  Practically, it has the advantage of the ease of use and even more ease in cleaning, should it get muddy or slimy while you bandy about the wet rigging of your sailboat, as the absence of metal links, eliminates a natural trap for dirt or otherwise.

rolex yachtmaster vs daytona

The primary unique feature of the watch– the bi-directional rotatable bezel for recording time (when sailing between two buoys, for example)–is a distinct advantage to those who intend to put their watch to the practical test beyond merely keeping time.  Whether you’re on the high seas or cooking steak in the backyard, any reason to leave your phone untouched (in this case, for the timer), and to put your new Yacht-Master to use, is a good reason.

The original Yacht-Master is an integral watch in the Rolex collection, and the headliner, Everose gold with black Oyster strap, will set you apart as a connoisseur in the timekeeping world.  Whether the occasion calls for formal business attire, or if you’re stretched out on the boat for the weekend, your Yacht-Master will strike the right tone .

rolex yachtmaster vs daytona

Don’t take the release of a second series of Yacht-Master watches as an indication that the first series didn’t make the grade.  That said, if you opt for the newer option, you will be rewarded with several new features.   Again, this review will focus on the headline watch, reference number 116680, a 44mm watch with a steel plate, but as always Rolex gives you the option to customize your selection.

  • Model Case: Oyster, 44mm, 904L steel
  • Bezel: Bidirectional rotatable Ring Command bezel. Blue Cerachrom insert in ceramic, engraved numerals and inscription
  • Crystal: Scratch-resistant sapphire
  • Water-Resistance: Waterproof to 100 metres / 330 feet
  • Movement: Perpetual, mechanical, self-winding, regatta chronograph
  • Calibre: 4161, Manufacture Rolex
  • Functions: Centre hour and minute hands, small seconds hand at 6 o’clock. Programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization. Stop-seconds for precise time setting
  • Power Reserve: Approximately 72 hours
  • Bracelet: Oysterflex, flat three-piece links of 904L steel
  • Clasp: Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Easylink 5mm comfort extension
  • Dial: White, with highly legible Chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminescence

Let’s start with two mechanical/functional differences from the original Yacht-Master, and we’ll consider the stylistic changes second.  Both watches offer a perpetual, self-winding movement, but this newer watch adds to that the regatta chronograph, a programmable counter for up to ten minutes, ideal for timing the starting sequence of a regatta .  Rolex touts this innovation as the product of nearly 35,000 hours of development, resulting in a complex mechanism that uses some 360 parts.

As a result, Rolex produced one of the first watches with a bezel synchronized to the movement of the watch itself.  The timer can be locked into place beforehand, and the wearer simply toggles the knob on the side of the watch to start, or synchronize the timer with the watch. The new Yacht-Master also has a battery life of approximately 72 hours, compared with the 48 hours of the original .

rolex yachtmaster vs daytona

As for the physical appearance of the Yacht-Master II, the most notable difference is its size, which is 44mm across the face rather than 40mm like the original .  This is a minor difference, but when the watch is clasped around your wrist–which, presumably, it will be–the difference is noticeable, as those additional few millimeters more or less cover the skin that otherwise remains exposed with the original watch.

The additional space also allows for a slightly more embellished watch-face on the Yacht-Master II, most notably the inclusion of a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock.  The additional features do give the impression of a bulkier watch, and really it will be a matter of taste if you prefer the larger or small dimensions.  For my taste, I prefer the slimmer cut .

Finally, the newer Yacht-Master is designed with a metal clasp, rather than the innovative rubber strap of the original.  The metal clasp can be extended by 5mm for comfort.  This is a more classic look for high-end watches, though the rubber strap is far from inelegant, and I have already given the reasons why it adds merit to the Yacht-Master , especially for anyone intending to put the watch to its semi-aquatic intended use.  That said, either watch can be adjusted and configured to your preference of a rubber or metal clasp, so neither watch takes advantage in this regard.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, introduced in 1963, was designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers. With its highly reliable chronograph and bezel with a tachymetric scale, it allows drivers to perfectly measure average speeds up to 400 kilometers or miles per hour, as they choose. An icon eternally joined in name and function to the high‑performance world of motorsport.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona  is one of the classic timepieces of the Rolex brand.  Its durability and lasting favor speak for themselves, as does the lifetime endorsement of Paul Newman, who supposedly wore his original Cosmograph Daytona every day from 1972 until his death in 2008 .  This review will look at the 116503 model, but, again, the watch components can be configured to the buyer’s demand.

  • Model Case: Oyster, 40mm, Yellow Rolesor – combination 904L steel and 18 ct yellow gold
  • Bezel: Fixed, with engraved tachymetric scale, in 18 ct yellow gold
  • Caliber: 4130, Manufacture Rolex
  • Functions: Centre hour, minute and seconds hands, small seconds hand at 6 o’clock. Chronograph (center hand) accurate to within 1/8 of a second, 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock. Stop-seconds for precise time setting
  • Bracelet: Oyster, flat three-piece links
  • Dial: Black, with snailed small counters

The feature most obvious when observing the Daytona watch is the presence of three small-timers inside the main watch face.  The Daytona is designed for the speedsters of the world, and that means it is precise to the ultimate degree.  The middle counter, positioned at 6 o’clock, is the second hand; the counter on the right records minutes lapsed, and the counter on the left records hours lapsed.  Seconds can be measured to 1/8th of a second .

On the circumference of the watch face, the dials used for the timing mechanisms are designed to screw down into the machine when not in use to ensure the timepiece remains waterproof.  When they are in use, they are designed to be perfectly waited to respond to the wearer’s instantaneous pressure, so as to maximize accuracy in recording matters of great precision, like lap times.

rolex yachtmaster vs daytona

Stylistically, the watch stands up to its reputation.  Despite all the counters and features readily and intuitively available at a glance, the watch face manages to maintain a clean countenance all within a 40mm width.  There are no excess tics or trivialities.  Everything about the watch is designed for maximum efficiency .  And in that delicate push-and-pull between efficiency and style, Rolex settled on the balance you see on the Daytona watch that has enabled it to survive over half a century as a symbol for quality and elegance.  There is little to dislike in this timepiece .

Conclusion – Rolex Yachtmaster vs Daytona

Any time you’re deciding between high-end watches, a large part of the decision will simply come down to personal preference .  Neither the Yacht-Master nor the Cosmographer Daytona will disappoint when it comes to performance, and they’re guaranteed to impress when it comes to style.  With that in mind, if you are looking for a watch that will fulfill a specific function beyond simple timekeeping –that is to say if you are a car enthusiast looking for a watch primed to measure and calculate speeds, or if you need a watch worthy of your own sea legs, or what have you– then your best value will be whichever watch is designed to most closely match your needs .

But sometimes you don’t need a watch suited for high-speed road racing or that can perfect your regatta race.  Sometimes you need a watch that will set you apart at the office and with your clients.  Sometimes you need a watch that will turn heads around town.  Sometimes you just need a watch.  And for my money, if you’ve narrowed your search down to the Yacht-Master and the Daytona: go with the original Yacht-Master .  It’s slim, it’s slick, it’s simple, and in simplicity there is beauty.  The more sober the statement, the bolder the claim .

Hands-On Rolex Made A Wearable Titanium Watch – How Are People Not Freaking Out?

Any other year, the titanium yacht-master 42 would steal the show for rolex. this year, the brand has so many crazy releases that the ym flies under the radar. here's why it still matters..

yacht master sailor

A year ago, the very idea of a titanium Rolex was relegated to wild dreams. A prototype had been seen on the wrist of British competitive sailor Sir Ben Ainslie, but the widely circulated online photo had gotten so old that some of us began to wonder if the watch would ever see the light of day.

yacht master sailor

The pic that launched our titanium dreams. Image by Ineos Britannia Team / C GREGORY

Now, in less than five months, we've gotten two watches from the Crown cased in RLX Titanium (a grade 5 titanium). The first was last year's 50mm Deep Sea Special , the mega dive watch that obliterated the water-resistance record. And now this week we have the Yacht-Master 42, which unlike the DSS is sized so that a normal human being could conceivably wear it.

Rolex Yacht-Master titanium watch

Here it is. The first practically sized titanium Rolex, the new Yacht-Master 42.

It's a big deal. But when seen next to Daytonas with display casebacks, Day-Dates with emojis, a solid-gold GMT-Master II, and an entirely new line of dress watches, a titanium Yacht-Master barely moves the needle of surprise and excitement. What a wild 48 hours this has been for the House of Wilsdorf.

In some ways, it feels like the appropriate response to not be that excited. After all, at this point every other watchmaker under the sun has made a titanium watch, from affordable Citizens in multiple colors of bezels and dials to Jean-Claude Biver's $500,000 minute repeater tourbillon announced Sunday.

Rolex Titanium Yacht-Master

And yet, as soon as the new titanium Yacht-Master ref. 226627 started to be passed around the room of Hodinkee editors during this week's Watches & Wonders trade show, the general reaction was just to laugh with surprise. This 42mm watch, which looks so sturdy, feels so unbelievably light. I mean, that's titanium for you. But still. You can't quite believe this watch is real, on a number of different levels.

Rolex Titanium Yacht-Master

For any of us who've ever tried on a steel Submariner (a.k.a. anyone with a passing interest in Rolex), it's kind of comical to find out how much your brain is preconditioned to see a 42mm steel Oyster case, round indices, and Mercedes hands and think about the luxurious heft that awaits you.

Rolex Titanium Yacht-Master

At around 100 grams, according to Rolex, the titanium Yacht-Master is so light it breaks your brain.

For a moment, let's compare the new YM to last year's titanium Pelagos from Rolex's sister brand Tudor. Rolex's choice to put the watch on a bracelet instead of a sportier Oysterflex makes the comparison obvious. I've now spent time with both pieces, and I prefer the Yacht-Master.

Lume shot of the Yacht-Master titanium

The YM, like the Pelagos, is distinctly a tool watch – something that would have been hard to say about Yacht-Masters in the past. But the finishing a world apart, which is saying something for such an understated metal as titanium.

Rolex Titanium Yacht-Master

Rolex's proprietary grade 5 "RLX Titanium" (stronger than the grade 2 of the Pelagos) has the curious property of being equally able to be brushed satin or polished, which means it has the nice sharp and shiny chamfers that you'd like to see contrasted against the dark grey and relatively matte metal. That combination also works well with the more matte and textured dial – and with the contrast of the raised black numerals against a matte ceramic bezel insert, which is is the main giveaway that this is still squarely a Yacht-Master.

Rolex Titanium Yacht-Master

My main critique (which I share into the void, knowing that Rolex designers will do whatever they think best) is that I wish they'd  stuck to the no-date design of Ainsilie's prototype. In the practical application of most sailing races, there's really no use for a date. If you're blue-water sailing and circumnavigating the globe, maybe its useful, though just like dive watches the practical application gives way to the reality of technology. So why not refine the design further and leave the date off altogether? And while we're at it, a better quick-adjustment option would be great.

Rolex Titanium Yacht-Master

The price is somewhat immaterial – CHF 13,400 – since the average collector won't be able to get it at retail anytime soon. But the new Yacht-Master 42 is more than a solid release. It's a more than a titanium proof of concept. It's a wearable piece that portends at least the possibility of future experiments with this fascinating material.

YACHTMASTER VS DAYTONA: A SAILOR AND A RACER

Rolex Yachtmaster vs Daytona

The battle featuring the Yachtmaster vs Daytona is a unique tussle of two iconic timepieces. To reach an informed decision eventually, we must first:

  • Consider the intricacies of the Yachtmaster wristwatch line (the original Yachtmaster wristwatch and the Yachtmaster II)
  • Examine the details of the Daytona wristwatch and its qualities
  • Sync these two wristwatches to settle this battle of the Rolex Yachtmaster vs Daytona.

Will it be the sailor or will it be the racer? Keep reading to find out!

The Yachtmaster Wristwatch Series: Introducing The Original Yachtmaster Wristwatch

Both Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II watches exemplify the true heart of a sailor. These timepieces take Inspiration from the robust and vibrant legacy Rolex parades. This legacy is responsible for Rolex’s relationship with the world of sailing since the 1950s.

Furthermore, the Yachtmaster wrist watch combines the best of aesthetics with excellent functionality. As for the Yacht-Master II, you get a blend of the best in Rolex technology. This blend produces what can be termed a regatta chronograph created for yachting events.

Summarizing the intricacies of the Yachtmaster watch series will throw more light to the Yachtmaster Vs Daytona battle.

Moreover, from the description, it is clear that selecting the Yacht-Master wristwatch series is a distinct choice in several ways. You might either choose the initial Yacht-Master that debuted in 1992, or the Yacht-Master II that first launched in 2007.

Note that the flagship model of the Yacht-Master wristwatch series remains the Yacht-Master (either the 40 or 37 version).

Meanwhile, in this review, our focus will be on the most important of these two version of the Yachtmaster wristwatch, the 40 version. However, note that both the 40mm and the 37mm editions can suit the buyer’s preference in different regards. Such as:

  • Dial varieties.

the rolex yachtmaster wristwatch

In-depth Review Of The Original Yachtmaster Wristwatch

To start with, the reference number 116655 of the 40mm model comes designed with an Everose gold trim. This wristwatch also provides a black watch face together with the Rolex trademarked rubber Oyster strap.

This strap will go on to be the first rubber strap on any model of Rolex watch. The strap comes in as a sporty option for the regular metal strap. More so, this strap is hypoallergenic. Therefore, rid yourself of any suspicions you may have in that aspect.

As for the design of this timepiece. First it is different. However, it is not inappropriate. The design still fits the aesthetic of the stylish watch face properly. In fact, the thin layout of the rubber strap conveys its own refinement that fits the somewhat svelte original Yachtmaster.

Moreover, when in use, you get that advantage of easy usage. Additionally, it delivers even more ease when it comes to cleaning.

So, when it gets muddy or slimy while you are at work on your sailboat, you do not have to bother too much. This is as the absence of metal links removes the trap dirt could get in through.

More so, the major distinctive feature of this Yachtmaster watch is the bi-directional rotatable bezel that helps with recording time. This is an unusual advantage to those who plan to use their watch all through the rigors. These are people that need the timepiece for more than just keeping the time.

Overall, the original Yachtmaster wristwatch is an essential part of the Rolex line of watches. In fact, the headliner that features a touch of ever rose gold on a black Oyster strap makes it better. This timepiece will make you different and proves your taste for good things in watches.

Regardless of what the occasion might be, the Rolex Yachtmaster still reflects that fitting classy look always.

Technical details.

  • Precision: -2/+2 sec/day, after casing

Introducing The Yachtmaster II Wristwatch

First off, you must not take the launch of a second series of another Yachtmaster wrist watch wrongly. This is no evidence to claim that the first series didn’t reach the desired standard.  Meanwhile, if you go for the newer version, you will get an improved timepiece. You get a new wristwatch with numerous fresh perks.

Once more, for this review, our focus will be on the headline watch. That is the one with the reference number 116680. It is a 44mm watch that features a steel plate. Plus, as always, Rolex provides you with the liberty to personalize your choice.

In-depth Review Of The Yachtmaster II Wristwatch

We begin with two technical or practical distinctions from the original Yacht-Master wristwatch. Thereafter, we will examine how the style changed over time.

These two watches deliver a perpetual, self-winding movement. However, this recent watch amplifies the features in the regatta chronograph. The wristwatch adds a programmable counter that lasts for as long as ten minutes.

This makes it a perfect timepiece for measuring the starting sequence of a regatta. The Rolex brand parades this creation as the result of almost 35,000 hours of work. The endless work produces what is now a sophisticated tool that employs about 360 different components..

Consequently, Rolex manufactured one of the first of its kind with a distinct bezel. The bezel came linked directly to the movement of the watch. Therefore, the timer can be locked into place before time. All the wearer needs is to toggle the knob on the flank of the timepiece to get it working again. That procedure also helps to incorporate the timer with the watch.

Furthermore, this latest Yachtmaster again comes with a battery life of nearly 72 hours. That’s an improvement on the previous 48 hours offered by the original.

Ultimately, this newer Yachtmaster presents a design that brings along with it numerous features in addition to the original. You have a metal clasp this time instead of the creative rubber strap featured in the original. More so, the metal clasp can extend further by 5mm to give you additional comfort.

In conclusion, either watch gives you freedom to adjust easily. Moreover, that helps them seamlessly fit every bit of your preference. This is thanks to the strap options. Whether you want it rubber or metal clasp, you can get it. Overall, these are two exceptional timepieces that deliver optimum performance and quality. This again throws the battle between the Rolex Yachtmaster Vs Daytona wide open.

  • Functions: Centre hour and minute hands, small seconds hand at 6 o’clock. Programmable countdown with mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization. Stop-seconds for precise time setting
  • Water-Resistance: Waterproof to 100 metres / 330 feet
  • Dial: White, with highly legible Chromalight display with long-lasting blue luminescence
  • Bezel: Bidirectional rotatable Ring Command bezel. Blue Cerachrom insert in ceramic, engraved numerals and inscription
  • Model Case: Oyster, 44mm, 904L steel
  • Winding Crown: Screw-down, Triplock triple waterproofness system
  • Bracelet: Oysterflex, flat three-piece links of 904L steel
  • Crystal: Scratch-resistant sapphire
  • Clasp: Folding Oysterlock safety clasp with Easylink 5mm comfort extension
  • Movement: Perpetual, mechanical, self-winding, regatta chronograph
  • Calibre: 4161, Manufacture Rolex
  • Power Reserve: Approximately 72 hours

Rolex Vs Daytona: Introducing The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Wristwatch

a classic Daytona wristwatch

In 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona hit the watch market space. The design of this watch equips it to satisfy the needs of professional racing drivers.

Thanks to its highly credible and durable chronograph and bezel that features a tachymetric scale, it is efficient. The Daytona wristwatch gives room for drivers to faultlessly assess average speeds. The watch is called the racer as it works up to an acceleration of 400 kilometers or miles per hour. This depends on what your choice is.

This timepiece is a hero forever celebrated in name and function by professionals in the high ‑ performance industry of motorsport.

Moreover, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona wristwatch is one of the distinctive timepieces made by the Rolex brand. Thanks to its strength and enduring efficiency, most wristwatch enthusiasts love this wristwatch.

Another boost in the credentials of this timepiece is the lifetime endorsement with Paul Newman. Paul apparently rocked his original Cosmograph Daytona wristwatch every day from 1972 until his demise in 2008.

For this review, we will review the 116503 version of the wristwatch. Just like the Yachtmaster wristwatch, each part of the watch fits the buyer’s needs with customization.

In-depth Review Of The Rolex Daytona Wristwatch

When you look deeply into the Daytona wristwatch, one feature is most distinct. When you look closely at the Daytona wristwatch, you notice the existence of three small-timers. These small timers stay fixed within the central watch face.

Similarly, the Daytona wrist watch has a design that works best for speedsters all over the world. By extension, that implies that it is accurate to the utmost level. In addition, the central counter, set at the 6 o’clock position, is the second hand. While the counter on the right side tells the total minutes lapsed. Plus, the counter on the left reports the hours lapsed and seconds, to as little as 1/8th of a second.

Meanwhile, on the surface of the watch, the dials employed for the timing tools come enabled to screw down. They screw down right into the machine when they are not in use. That way, they ensure the wristwatch stays waterproof.

How about when they are in use? They feature a type of design that allows them to respond swiftly to pressure from the wearer. With that, this Daytona wristwatch fully maximizes precision in recording matters of considerable accuracy. They are perfect tools for recording lap times.

When we consider the style of this timepiece, it fully measures up to its status. Regardless of all the counters and details readily available at a glance, this timepiece does well to stay arranged. All of these are enclosed within a 40mm width measurement. You will find no leftover tics or needless appearances.

  • Dial: Black, with snailed small counters
  • Model Case: Oyster, 40mm, Yellow Rolesor – combination 904L steel and 18 ct yellow gold
  • Bezel: Fixed, with engraved tachymetric scale, in 18 ct yellow gold
  • Bracelet: Oyster, flat three-piece links
  • Movement: Perpetual, mechanical, self-winding
  • Caliber: 4130, Manufacture Rolex

Conclusion: Rolex Yachtmaster Vs Daytona

Sometimes, what you need is not a watch made for high-speed road racing. It might not even be the type that can improve your regatta race. In fact, what you need might not be a watch with enviable sailing qualities. You might only need a watch that will make you stand out in your office. These watches even add to your image with your clients.

When you need a watch that will turn heads when you step out, decide between the Yachtmaster vs Daytona.

And, to settle this argument between the Yachtmaster Vs Daytona, here is our recommendation. Go for the original Yachtmaster wristwatch. It is a pleasantly slim, sleek, and simple timepiece that still delivers quality. The tenet is: “The subtler the statement, the bolder the claim!”

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.

24' Eastward Ho

ARCHIVED: This is a previously listed vessel and is no longer offered for sale If you would like assistance locating a similar vessel, Click Here to locate a similar boat

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Eastward HO 24

Eastward HO 24 is a 23 ′ 7 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Walter McInnis and built by C. E. Ryder starting in 1975.

Drawing of Eastward HO 24

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally designed for wood contruction. The hulls of the later, FG version were built by CE Ryder (USA) and finished by Portsmouth Yacht Co. Diesel power was available as an option.
