How much is an RC boat?

This will depend on the exact model and brand of your RC boat. The price should be reflected depending on the quality and ability you want from your RC electric boat.

What size brushless motor for RC boats?

When choosing the right brushless motor for your RC boat, you must ensure that the correct motor size is determined to fit the weight and size of your hull. Below are some basic starting points for a single-motor RC electric boat;

  • 28-29mm can power hulls up to 600mm
  • 36mm can power up to around 800mm
  • 40mm can power up to 1200mm as long as it's a light brushless motor or abs hull.
  • Anything over 40mm will require a 56-58mm motor.

Can RC boats go in salt water?

Essentially, you can use your RC electric boat in salt and fresh water when the proper maintenance and precautions are met. However, while RC model boats in Australia are operational in salt water, it's important to remember that salt water is extremely corrosive and can damage your RC model.

How do RC boats work?

Your remote-controlled model boat is powered by an electric motor at the front of the boat, which is connected to a shaft that runs to the back of your RC boat and out through the bottom of the hull. Your radio transmitter will send signals to your boat, which will then be interpreted and translated into directions for your boat.

We have an extensive collection of remote control boats. Ranging from sailing to electric and even military patrol boats, you will find the perfect product for your sailing pleasure and will be happy that you chose Metro Hobbies when you buy your very own RC boat.

5+ Best RC Sail Boats To Buy Online [Top Rated]

Best RC Sail Boat

Remote control boats are fun, and while some people like super fast brushless boats capable of speeds of up to 100km/h, others prefer slower RC sail boats, or yachts.

Today we're looking at the best RC sail boats in our opinion from brands such as Volantexrc, ZT, Joysway and Monsoon.

These realistic mini sailing boats look and feel just like the real thing, and move across the water intriguing anyone watching on from the river bank.

So are you ready to get your rc sail boat?

1. Volantexrc 791

The Volantex RC Compass V791-1 is a beginner-friendly product for those who are new to sail boat racing. This model is especially optimized for RG65 races.

This boat has an overall length of 650mm, making it a compact and small device, coming in at 1300g meaning that it can easily be packed and moved around to different pools, ponds and lakes.

The mast is almost 1 meter in height. ABS plastic was used in the construction of the Volantex hull, providing permanence and robustness at the same time. The ABS plastic also has waterproof properties that protects the electric components inside the boat from water damage.

Precise control is powered by a small servo and a 3kg winch servo. To control this sail boat, there is a 2.4GHz transmitter included with this product. This product comes partly pre-assembled with only the addition of AA batteries needed for the transmitter and boat. The batteries do not come included.

As this is a smaller sail boat model, it is recommended for use in small bodies of water such as pools. This model is not optimized for racing on any salt water regions. This product comes in a red, black and white colour scheme with a smooth sheen.

2. ZT Model AB03401 Voyager

The ZT Model AB03401 Voyager is a light sail boat with a scale size of 1:43 and height of over 440mm and light, ideal for novice racers. It is equipped with 2 servos, allowing smooth and seamless control.

The transmitter that can be used to manage the sailboat has a 2.4GHz system which prevents data interference as well as giving the option to control the boat from a far distance.

The whole of this product is structured out of ABS plastic which is waterproof and delivers a smooth surface that is compatible with racing on different bodies of water. The ABS plastic is also designed to protect the internal electric pieces from harm when the boat capsizes. This sailboat comes in a variety of different color options ranging from green, red and blue against a white backdrop.

A special feature is that 80 players can race together. The battery required is a 3.7V 150mAh LiPo which can provide up to an hour of playing time depending on the speed and distance travelled.

The battery comes included with a purchase of the boat. This fun-sized model is best suited to smaller regions of water such a pool.

3. Joysway DragonForce 65

The Joysway DragonForce 65 is a racing sailboat at 650mm and a weight of 1200g. This product is powered by a digital rudder servo in addition to a sail winch which delivers focused and powerful control over the twists and turns.

Additionally, the digital rudder servo has been upgraded to provide 10% more precision than the other version 6 editions. The hull is painted and made out of plastic while the mast is constructed out of carbon fibre.

The sails are Mylar film at a thin 50 microns in length. There is stability and durability provided by the aluminium keel at the bottom of the boat.

Rig fittings such as the Jib Boom and Compression Strut have been re-structured to ensure less hassle when putting the boat together. Speed and direction is enabled through a 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver which has 4 channels. The product is inclusive of a display stand for storage. This sailboat is compatible with AA batteries which do not come included with a purchase of this product. Playing times vary depending on the speed and distance.

This sailboat is available in a classic all-white design with a stripped mast. This should not be raced on salt water bodies.

4. Joysway 8812 Focus 2

The Joysway 8812 Focus 2 is a bigger sailboat with a total length of 995mm and solid weight of 3450g. Power is delivered through a 10kg metal geared winch servo coupled with a rudder servo.

The combination of these 2 features ensure focused movements and turns without power being sacrificed. Several different materials were used in the construction of this sail boat to provide both durability and smooth performance.

With a plastic hull and carbon fibre mast, this whole model is supported by a plastic keel, offering waterproof protection for the electric pieces

The mast is extremely large at a height of over 1500mm, which makes it easy to track the boat from a far interspace. Speed and other settings are delivered through the included 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver which also has 4 channels. A display stand comes included with a purchase of this racing sailboat. AA batteries are necessary to power both the boat and transmitter.

Running times can vary based on the battery used. This boat comes in a grey colour with bright orange accents like the stripes on the mast. This boat is not compatible with salt water.

5. Monsoon 900

The Monsoon 900 racing yacht is catered towards more experienced and serious sail boat racers. It is a bigger boat, with a length of 900mm and height of 1800mm. This boat requires a minimum 1kg filling for the ballast in order to function.

The hull of this product is made out of a composite fibre glass material, which prevents chemical corrosion and provides a lightweight yet sturdy construction. The hull is coated with enamel for extra protection.

The mast of this boat is structured out of aluminum alloy with an oxygenated exterior that enables play time on a salt water body without concerns of damage.

The rig is designed to withstand strong winds while high density Terylene cloth was used for the sail, preventing tears that can generate from extreme weather conditions. A rudder servo is embedded into this product to enable precise control, alongside a metal geared winch servo. Control is given through the included 2.4GHz remote which has 2 or more channels. This product comes partially pre-assembled and is compatible with batteries ranging from 4.8-6V which determines the running time.

This yacht comes in a white finish with orange and blue accents throughout.

Before purchasing a remote control boat, consider several factors like speed, handling power, and battery capacity. If you are an RC boat enthusiast and are planning to race against other boats, ensure that your radio controlled boat is the type that operates on multiple frequencies so you won’t have problems with the remote control signal.

Most remote control boats are designed to cruise on fresh water, so racing or cruising your radio controlled boat on the sea may not be that advisable. However, there are remote control boats that are developed for high-end use and racing purposes.

It is important to take note what and how are you going to use your RC boat for. Is it for playing, simple cruising, or for high-end racing? Whatever it is you’re after, Mr Toys is here to help you shop for the right remote control boat model. Browse through this page or visit a Mr Toys retail store near you!

RC Laser 2024 Nationals Wallaroo

With Christmas and the holiday season coming up we wanted to give you a timely reminder of what a great event the Wallaroo 2024 RC Laser Nationals are likely to be. Here is the link to the Notice of Race for the event showing the planned sailing schedule.

The event will be sailed using the SHRS scoring system under the direction of RO, Stewart Ross. This scoring system means that less experienced sailors get more time sailing with the top sailors and also get the opportunity to compete for a trophy in the silver fleet in the second half of the titles.

Peter Elverd (vice commodore Wallaroo SC) and Neville Hank and other WSC members will turn on a social program that you will enjoy in sailing club facilities that you will love. There will be a sit down meal at the club on Friday night and a barbecue again at the club on Saturday night.

There will be members of both Wallaroo SC and Mawson Lakes MYC present to ensure that the event runs smoothly. All this in an environment where the emphasis will be on fun and enjoyable sailing.

What more could a RC Laser sailor want for the new year?

Have a good Christmas and we hope to see a good number of you at Wallaroo from May 3-5, 2024. And by the way if you want to make a 3 week holiday of it RC Lasers are featured at the SA Masters Games at Wallaroo on April 11-12.

Please pass this message on to other RCL sailors who you think may be interested.

2023 RC Laser NSW Titles Report

Dobroyd Aquatic Club hosted the 2023 RC Laser NSW Titles over the weekend of 19020 August. 15 Sailors competed in a very successful event over 16 races.

There was a range of weather conditions which proved a fair test in all aspects of RC sailing. Both days had mostly clear skies and temps around the low 20’s.

Day 1 provided very strong winds, mostly from the West. The wind speeds averaged 17 with gusts to 41 Km/Hr, (9 up to 22 Knots). The Fleet chose “C” sails and they lasted for the day’s sailing.

The sailing was very competitive. Under the watchful eyes of Race Officer Paul Martin. A couple of General Recalls set the scene for some great racing.

An early leader, Graham Brown, stamped his prowess with a few wins. Graham showed no easing and continued to win every scoring race for the day. Second in contention was Peter Close who was the main challenger and won the remaining race. Peter scored many places and secured second place at the end of day 1. The only other sailor in contention was Noel McPherson. Noel took many places to position comfortably in third place. We completed 9 races in good time.

Day 2 presented very light winds which brought out our “A” sails. Our Club weather station recorded 4 to 14 Km/ Hr, (2 to 8 Knots) for most of the afternoon. A late wind change from the North had many instant sail changes, a mix of “B” and “C” sails came out with “C”’s proving a better choice for some. The wind peaked at 27 Km/Hr, (14 Knots).

Graham Brown was virtually untouchable as he continued his dominance on the water. Graham won all remaining races except for a second place in race 12. A tangle in race 11 had a potential DNF which was corrected with a redress, giving Graham 1.2 points. Graham totalled 14.2 points for 13 scoring races and a superb win for the gold medal.

Peter Close continued from Saturday with his high class sailing. Peter had another win and many places, to be unchallenged and to earn his second place and the silver medal. I (Brian Chapman), continued with my early success. After an overall placing of 5th after day 1, my aim was to hope for a fourth. Rob Lowndes, a very skilful sailor in any field was the challenge. Good fortune and staying out of trouble gave me a win in race 12. I was delighted to take third place by a count back and the bronze medal.

There were many good performances on both days. Bruce Hilliard and Martin Thearle won a race each. Noel McPherson looked to have locked in third place, but after an uncharacteristic off day, scored equal points for third. A count back gave Noel fourth place overall. Many sailors had some pleasing results. Rob Lowndes, Bruce Hilliard a win, Richard Thorpe, Martin Thearle a win, David Page our visitor from PRYC, Narelle Derwent and Geoff Lucas (unable to sail day 2), all had one or more places in a very strong field.

There were many who made this day possible, and a great success.

Our Race Officer, Paul Martin, who made a couple of trips down from the Blue Mountains to officiate. Thank you Paul. Jill Brown, our scorer provided another nicely legible sheet. Thank you Jill. Matt and Richard, our boat crew, provided the course settings and the many adjustments as required by the Race Officer. Thank you Matt and Richard. John Porter, our DAC sailor, volunteered to video our days on the water. Thank you John. These will be forwarded when completed. David Page travelled from Queensland to compete. Thank you David, a great effort. Along with Noel McPherson and Graham Brown, our format from previous events again worked well.

And to all entrants, you made this day with good competitive sailing, a great atmosphere and many helping hands, thank you.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Everything we know about the disaster

Rescue teams are searching for survivors after the 1.6-mile long Francis Scott Key Bridge crashed into the Patapsco River at around 1.30am local time (5.30am UK time) on Tuesday.

Tuesday 26 March 2024 23:01, UK

A major bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore after it was hit by a 289m-long cargo ship.

Six people remain missing after two others were rescued from the water following the disaster in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Here's everything we know about the incident so far.

What happened?

A large section of the 1.6 mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge fell into the water after it was struck by a container ship, known as the Dali, at around 1.30am local time (5.30am UK time).

The vessel struck one of the bridge's supports, causing the whole structure to collapse, sending the road surface and steel beams crashing into the water.

Baltimore bridge latest: Follow live updates

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into what happened, with its chair Jennifer Homendy saying at least six people are still missing.

Eight people were initially unaccounted for - with one described as being in a "very serious condition" in hospital. The other was not injured.

The six missing are believed to be part of a construction crew that was repairing potholes on the bridge, the Maryland Department of Transportation has said.

All 22 crew members on board the ship, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries.

Dramatic video shows the cargo vessel approaching the bridge before the structure collapses into the water.

Vehicles can be seen falling from the bridge.

An exact number has not been given, but Baltimore fire department's communications chief Kevin Cartwright said multiple vehicles were on the bridge when it was struck by the ship, one of which was the size of an HGV.

US president Joe Biden said in a news conference hours after the collapse that personnel on the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel.

Mr Biden added this "undoubtedly saved lives" at it meant local authorities were able to close the bridge before it was struck.

Bridge in Baltimore collapses after apparent impact with cargo ship

What happened in the moments before the crash?

CCTV and marine tracking data shows the container ship lost power for about 60 seconds about four minutes before it hit the bridge. It appeared to adjust its course and start smoking before impact.

According to the timings on the CCTV, the vessel hit the structure at 1.28:44am - with the bridge collapsing four seconds later.

The operators of the Dali cargo ship issued a mayday call that the vessel had lost power moments before the crash, but the ship still headed toward the bridge at "a very, very rapid speed", Maryland Governor Wes Moore said.

The ship was moving at eight knots, which is roughly 9mph, when it hit the structure, the governor said.

What do we know about the ship?

The Singapore-flagged container ship, known as Dali, was headed to Colombo in Sri Lanka at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine Group, the company which manages the ship, said it hit the bridge while under the control of two pilots.

The firm said the exact cause of the incident was yet to be determined.

The Dali was previously involved in a minor incident when it hit a quay at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2016, according to Vessel Finder and maritime accident site Shipwrecklog.

An inspection of the Dali last June at a port in Chile identified a problem with the ship's "propulsion and auxiliary machinery", according to Equasis, a shipping information system.

The deficiency involved gauges and thermometers, but the website's online records did not elaborate.

The most recent inspection listed for the Dali was conducted by the US Coast Guard in New York on 13 September 2023. The "standard examination" did not identify any deficiencies, according to the Equasis data.

What do we know about the bridge itself?

Last June, federal inspectors rated the 47-year-old bridge to be in fair condition. But the structure did not appear to have pier protection to withstand the crash, experts said.

"If a bridge pier without adequate protection is hit by a ship of this size, there is very little that the bridge could do," according to Virginia Tech engineering professor Roberto Leon.

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, it was named after the author of the American national anthem.

What impact could this collision have?

All ship traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore has been suspended until further notice, though the port remains open to trucks, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said.

Last year, the port handled a record 52.3m tons of foreign cargo worth $80bn (£63bn), according to the state. In addition to cargo, more than 444,000 passengers cruised out of the port in 2023.

The port is a major east coast hub for shipping. The bridge spans the Patapsco River, which massive cargo ships use to reach the Chesapeake Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic.

President Biden said that he plans to travel to Baltimore "as quickly as I can" and that he expects the federal government to pick up the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge.

Has this ever happened before?

From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses worldwide due to ship or barge collisions, with a total of 342 people killed, according to a 2018 report from the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.

Eighteen of those collapses happened in the United States.

Among them were a 2002 incident in which a barge struck the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River at Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, sending vehicles plunging into the water. Fourteen people died and 11 were injured.

In 2001, a tugboat and barge struck the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel, Texas, causing a section of the bridge to tumble 80 feet into the bay below. Eight people were killed.

In 1993, barges being pushed by a towboat in dense fog hit and displaced the Big Bayou Canot railroad bridge near Mobile, Alabama.

Minutes later, an Amtrak train with 220 people onboard reached the displaced bridge and derailed, killing 47 people and injuring 103 others.

Dugald River Solar Farm begins powering outback Queensland mining amid growing demand for green energy

The country's largest remote solar farm has officially launched in outback Queensland to power one of the richest mining regions in the world.

The 88-megawatt Dugald River Solar Farm, which generates enough power to support 90,000 homes, consists of 180,000 panels across 200 hectares in outback Queensland.

It will provide solar energy, firmed by gas from the APA Diamantina Power Station, to mining projects by MMG Limited, Mount Isa Mines, and New Century, which are all major resources companies in the North West Minerals Province.

The region is renowned globally for its high-quality critical mineral deposits such as copper, zinc, vanadium, and phosphate.

The solar farm's owner APA Group said green energy projects were the key to developing Australia's mining industry and supporting local companies to address global shortages of metals and minerals.

APA Group executive of operations Petrea Bradford said demand for renewable energy was surging in the mining industry as companies sought cheaper, reliable alternatives.

"The North West region has a huge renewable resource. Our strategy for being in the North West is to support our mining customers as they continue to look to decarbonise with renewable energy solutions," she said.

Unlocking Australia's green potential

The North West Minerals Province has an estimated worth of $500 billion, according to the Queensland government.

It holds some of the richest critical minerals deposits in the world including copper, zinc, silver, and vanadium — all metals crucial to the development of renewable technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, and batteries.

A map of mines in north-west Queensland

As established global mining deposits, such as the world's largest copper mine Codelco in Chile, began to decline, investors were looking to countries like Australia to fill the gaps, said industry analyst of 30 years Professor Rick Valenta.

"This is an enormous opportunity for Australia to supply the rest of the world with safe and environmentally responsible metals, like vanadium and copper, that we will all need for a transition to renewable energy.

"Not only that, as countries are having to build more to accommodate rising populations, demand for these metals will surge."

However, Resources Minister Scott Stewart said one of the biggest barriers to the development of Queensland's rural mining industry was cheap, reliable energy.

"When I go and visit mines out in that area, they talk about this as one of their biggest inhibitors to expansion," Mr Stewart said.

The issue prompted the Queensland government to purchase the CopperString 2.0 project in 2023.

A 1,100-kilometre overhead transmission line will connect the North West Minerals Province to the grid near Townsville with the aim of providing more reliable and efficient energy to the region's businesses and residents.

"This will actually unlock the potential for new mines to come on, to get things moving because our critical minerals that lie in that North West Minerals Province are absolutely what we need to develop our renewable energy plan," Mr Stewart said.

Construction was expected to begin in 2024 with CopperString 2.0 set to be completed in 2029, according to the Queensland government.

Ms Bradford said APA had invested in an entire commercial team responsible for investigating opportunities to supply renewable energy to mines in the region.

"More and more of our mining customers are looking for renewable energy infrastructure solutions which is an opportunity for us," she said.
