10 things to do on Mother's Day in Houston (that Mom will actually love)

M ay 12 is just around the corner, which means you have less than a month to come up with a Mother's Day gift Mom will love. This year, why not surprise her with tickets to a shared experience you can enjoy together? To help you make a plan before everything's all booked up, we found 10 genuinely fun things to do in and around Houston on Mother's Day weekend. We have activities for moms of all kinds, from beer lovers to Broadway fans, so even though Mom says she'll never pick a favorite child, these options will definitely help you climb the leaderboard.

1. Treat her to three days of bands, brisket and beer

The three-day Big As Texas Fest takes place on Mother’s Day weekend. The stacked lineup of this music and food festival packs in more than 30 acts, including country legends Dwight Yoakam and Tracy Byrd; hitmakers like Thomas Rhett, Dierks Bentley and Billy Strings; and rising stars like Alana Springsteen and Scotty Alexander. Add on barrel racing, chainsaw carving and all the barbecue she can stand, and it’ll be a Mother’s Day weekend of any country girl’s dreams. Snag a three-day pass to enjoy all weekend long, or pick up a single-day access ticket for Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Find it : Montgomery County Fairgrounds, 9333 Airport Road, Conroe

2. Get your giggles out at comedian Ralph Barbosa's show

Catching young comics on their way up is one of the most exciting ways to experience comedy. Dallas native Ralph Barbosa, fresh off his first Netflix special and "Tonight Show" debut, sold out all 14 of his upcoming Houston Improv shows — but tickets are still available on the resale market for  May 10 , May 11 and May 12 . Book now to snag Mom what are shaping up to be the hottest Mother's Day tickets in town.

Find it : The Houston Improv (located in the Marq-E Entertainment Center), 7620 Katy Freeway, Suite 455, Houston

3. Try indoor skydiving together

Make this the year your adventurous mom checks skydiving off her list. Well, indoor skydiving, that is. iFLY’s indoor skydiving setup gives flyers that adrenaline rush of skydiving, without planes, jumping, free-falling or parachutes. How does it work? Fans force air through a vertical wind tunnel at speeds high enough to lift you up and keep you floating — and give Mom bragging rights for years to come.

Find it : iFLY Houston Memorial, 9540 Katy Freeway, Houston

4. Enjoy "The Sound of Music" on the opera stage

Even decades after Julie Andrews twirled through alpine meadows and into our hearts, “The Sound of Music” is still one of America’s favorite things. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s timeless musical-turned-treasured classic plays the Houston Grand Opera stage at 2 p.m. on Mother’s Day , with a complimentary rose for every mother who attends.

Find it : Alice and George Brown Theater (located in the Wortham Theater Center), 500 Texas St., Houston

5. Break out of an escape room together

If your family's never done an escape room, you’re in for some serious fun, and if Mom’s got nieces, nephews or grands to round out your team, all the better. Some rooms at The Escape Game Houston cast you as secret agents tracking down looted artwork, Miner Forty-Niners sniffing for gold, or special ops racing to save the world. But our favorite room puts you behind bars, where Mom’s serving a life sentence for a crime she didn’t commit — or did she? Either way, you’ve got one hour to get her to freedom before you’re all discovered.

Find it : The Escape Game Houston CityCentre, 794 Sorella Court, Houston

6. See Aventura on their farewell tour

If Mom thought she’d never again get the chance to see Romeo Santos and Aventura together on one stage, she’s in luck: The Kings of Bachata are back together for one final tour, and they’re swinging through Houston on Mother’s Day weekend. The Cerrando Ciclos Tour stops at Toyota Center May 11 and May 12 . Treat mom to this special opportunity to hear hits like “Obsesión,” “Dile al Amor,” “Ella y Yo” and “Por un Segundo” before Romeo, Henry, Lenny and Max close the book on Aventura for good.

Find it : Toyota Center, 1510 Polk St., Houston

7. Sip a flight at Houston’s best breweries

To say that Houston is a beer town is a Texas-sized understatement. With more than 60 breweries, it’d be tough to try them all. But you can score a three-day Houston Brew Pass from Viator and show Mom one of the coolest sides of the city. She’ll get a free flight of craft beer at 14 craft breweries – including local favorites like B52, Equal Parts, Eureka Heights, Saint Arnold, True Anomaly and more – as she sips her way through Mother’s Day weekend.

Find it : Throughout the Greater Houston Area

8. Take her out on a luxury yacht

Give her a gift your siblings can never top: the ride of her life in a luxury yacht . This Catalina 425, called Adelaide, sails the smooth waters of Galveston Bay and Clear Lake. Book a spot with Captain Christopher Curran and choose your own adventure: help dock and steer from the cockpit, be a deckhand for the day, watch for dolphins, or just chill on deck and drink in the views.

Find it : Sailing Adelaide (located at Waterford Harbor Marina), 800 Mariners Drive, Kemah

9. Root, root, root for the home team

After all those travel-ball games she's chauffeured you to over the years, how about taking her to one? The Astros will be on the road all weekend, but you can snag seats at  Constellation Field to cheer on the Sugar Land Space Cowboys as they go head to head with the Oklahoma City Baseball Club. The teams face off in three games throughout the weekend: May 10 at 7:05 p.m. , May 11 at 6:05 p.m. and  May 12 at 2:05 p.m. As a bonus, the first 2,000 fans to arrive each game score free Space Cowboys swag.

Find it : Constellation Field, 1 Stadium Drive, Sugar Land

10. Head to Hogwarts with the whole family

With a flick of the wrist, conductor Keitaro Harada and Houston Symphony transports us all to Hogwarts — no flying car required — with the May 10-11 performances of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” In Concert. As the symphony journeys through John Williams’ lush score, Chris Columbus’ magical movie plays in high-definition, for three family-friendly shows on Mother’s Day weekend: May 10 at 7:30 p.m. , May 11 at 2:30 p.m. , and May 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Mass shooting in Chicago leaves girl dead, 10 other people injured in Back of the Yards

By Beth Lawrence , Shardaa Gray , Asal Rezaei

Updated on: April 15, 2024 / 12:52 PM CDT / CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One child was killed, and 10 other people, including three other children, were injured in a shooting in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood Saturday evening, police said.

The shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. near West 52nd Street and South Damen Avenue, Chicago police said. The victims were at a family gathering when the shooting happened.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert of 18 rounds fired and found multiple people shot on the block, police said. Officers then began providing life-saving care, including tourniquets and chest seals, according to Chicago Police Area One Deputy Chief Don Jerome.

A 9-year-old girl was shot in the head and died, according to police and her family, who identified her as Ariana Molina.

A 1-year-old boy and a 7-year-old boy were each shot multiple times and were in critical condition Saturday night. A 9-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to his left pinky finger and was in good condition. Officials said the ages of the adult victims ranged from 19 to 40.

"This was not a random act of violence. It was likely gang-related," Jerome said. "The offenders' actions, make no mistake, are horrific and unacceptable in our city."

A source said the children were playing outside when the shooting happened. Some adults were inside or on the porch at the time.

A small vigil with balloons and candles formed at the site of the shooting on Monday morning, as mourners stopped by to grieve.

Mayor Brandon Johnson said the city also planned to hold a mass canvassing event in the area on Monday to provide neighbors with access to behavioral teams, victim services, and case management. The city also will provide support to Ariana's family through its Emergency Supplemental Victim's Fund.

Ariana's father, Jose Molina, said all 11 people who were shot were family members and were celebrating his sister's confirmation. Ariana was in the front yard when she was shot in the head. Her mother was shot in the back. His two nephews, ages 1 and 7, were improving and stabilized by Monday morning, but might require further surgery.

Ariana's mother does not know she died.

"I know she's going to go crazy. She loves her," Jose said. "I don't even know what to tell her."

Jose's nephews were both shot twice in the stomach. Jose was shot in the foot.

"I got shot in my leg and my feet, but I'm ok. It just came in and out," he said. "I don't care about my leg. My daughter was too young for this."

Police said a witness saw a black sedan drive up during the gathering. Someone inside fired multiple shots before driving off.

ariana-molina.jpg

"When I saw my daughter on the floor, she had a bullet hole in her head. I try help her, but it was too late," Jose said.

Jose says they've lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and have never had any problems.

"She had nothing to with nothing of that. None of us are gang bangers. We don't gang bang. We've been here 30 years. We don't do none of that."

He said he is hoping for justice soon.

"Why would they do that s*** to little kids? They got a big life. Why would they do that to them?" he said.

Jose told CBS 2 they were in the process of moving out of the neighborhood because of recent shootings.

Street pastor Donovan Price said the impact on the family has been devastating.

"I think a part of Chicago has died. Part of Chicago, like the mothers when I first got here, the families when I first got here tonight, should be screaming, should be running, should be crying. We all should," he said.

Some witnesses described two shooters on foot, police said.

No one was in custody Sunday morning. Area One detectives were investigating.

Mayor Brandon Johnson released a statement on the incident Sunday afternoon, calling the shooting a "heinous and cowardly act of wanton violence":

Today, we mourn the loss of an 8-year-old girl whose life was tragically taken from her by gang violence. This heinous and cowardly act of wanton violence that leaves our city mourning children is beyond reprehensible and has no place in our communities. We are all allowed to be outraged today – a warm, spring day that I am sure this child would have been enjoying with family. I am praying for her loved ones and her community as they experience the unimaginable pain of losing a child.  I am also praying for the recovery of the three children and seven adults who were injured in this horrific shooting. Our Mayor's Office of Community Safety has been in contact with the Chicago Police Department, which is committed to identifying and apprehending the individuals responsible.  The Community Safety Coordination Center has developed an initial response plan, which, among other resources, will consist of:  A mass canvassing event at 52nd and Damen and surrounding blocks on Monday, April 15, at 2 p.m. with the purpose of providing the community access to behavioral teams, victim services and case management  Financial support for the family of the child who passed away via the Emergency Supplemental Victim's Fund program Emergency Services Assistance Center, starting today, April 14 Victim services to other victims and families  Increased 9th District CPD presence at impacted schools As the CPD and our partners work through their investigation, the Back of the Yards community has the full support of our administration as they process and heal from this trauma.

CONCORD — The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Hampshire entered into a settlement agreement with Robert Michael Waters, Jr. and Westville Remarketing, Inc, (Westville) to resolve allegations that Waters and Westville violated the False Claims Act by taking and misusing proceeds of an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) to purchase a yacht, U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young announces.

Waters and his Company, Westville, have agreed to pay the proceeds from an auction of the yacht and an additional $150K to the government. In the settlement, Waters agreed to the auction of the yacht and to cooperate in the transfer of title to whoever purchases it. The auction of the yacht will occur at a later date.

“Unfortunately, individuals like Mr. Waters attempted to inappropriately benefit from government programs aimed at aiding Americans and the economy during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young. “This Office and our law enforcement partners are working tirelessly to uncover this widespread fraud and recover these funds on behalf of American taxpayers. This settlement demonstrates that we will pursue both civil and criminal avenues to hold those who committed COVID-19 pandemic fraud accountable and divest them of their ill-gotten gains.”

The United States contends that Waters and his Company, Westville, falsely represented to the Small Business Administration (SBA) that Westville would apply the proceeds of the EIDL to its business to counteract the negative economic effects of COVID-19, and instead used $340,000 of the loan proceeds to purchase an Azimut yacht called the “Alisa.” On April 7, 2020, Robert Waters, a 50% owner of Westville, submitted an application for an EIDL for $40,000 on Westville’s behalf. On December 27, 2021, he applied for a modification of the original EIDL for an additional $343,800. On February 15, 2022, just over one month after receiving the EIDL proceeds from the SBA, Waters transferred $340,000 of the funds to another entity he wholly owned, and spent the funds and other money to purchase the yacht “Alisa.” This yacht had no legitimate business purpose.

Waters was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 2, 2023. The U.S. Attorney’s Office moved to dismiss the indictment following a revelation of additional information. The Court accepted the motion, and the criminal case was dismissed on March 29, 2024.

The Internal Revenue Service (CI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation. The United States Marshal Service assisted with the investigation and seizure of the vessel. Valuable assistance was provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Aaron Gingrande and Raphael Katz represented the government in this matter.

CI is the criminal investigative arm of the IRS, responsible for conducting financial crime investigations, including tax fraud, narcotics trafficking, money-laundering, public corruption, healthcare fraud, identity theft and more. CI special agents are the only federal law enforcement agents with investigative jurisdiction over violations of the Internal Revenue Code, obtaining a more than a 90 percent federal conviction rate. The agency has 20 field offices located across the U.S. and 12 attaché posts abroad.

Mika has announced the UK and Ireland leg of his “Apocalypse Calypso” Tour for Spring 2024.

The artist has lined up shows in Brighton, Wolverhampton, Manchester, Dublin and London, where he’ll headline the Eventim Apollo, between April 4 and 11. Tickets for all the shows go on general sale at 10am this Friday, September 29.

The run will follow an extensive, previously announced tour of mainland Europe, which begins in Bordeaux on March 1 and will wrap up on April 2 in Berlin. Tickets for those dates are already on sale.

Mika recently released the new single “C’est la Vie,” the first track to be shared from his new album, for which he sings exclusively in French. The follow-up to 2019’s My Name Is Michael Holbrook is due out on December 1 through Island Def Jam France.

Mika began his pop career in 2007 with the single “Grace Kelly,” which went on to sell over 3 million copies worldwide and was the second British single ever to top the chart on downloads alone. His second album The Boy Who Knew Too Much released in 2009 continued the trend, making it into the top ten in over 10 worldwide and included the hits “We Are Golden,” “Blame It On The Girls” and “Rain.”

In May 2022, after a triumphant return to Coachella, Mika had the honor of acting as an international host of that year’s Eurovision Song Contest . The singer dazzled the audience with a show-stopping medley at the finale with audience figures reaching 161 million viewers.

Honestly, I'm sad about it and I don't quite get it - people knew that the new album is in French and they were still selling out the tour dates so why is Mika scared to sing the new French songs outs

I was totally off, he wanted to include it in the setlist for the non-francophone countries anyway  I love the songs live, I prefer them over the studio version. (Actually, to be honest, I prefer all

He really replaced C'est la vie with Rain.  And no Vogue anymore either. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5HQIDGNZ0n/?igsh=cnQ3M3UxajU5OTc1  And an English version of Bougez... well, that gives ho

2 hours ago, krysady said:   He could have cut EMD or Banana, there's already a few songs with the same vibe, but 30 Secondes it is so so beautiful live!    And it was the only song from the new album that it's really worth being heard by the world, since he doesn't perform Passager, neither Je Sais Que Je T'Aime, wich is a sacrilege!    Now probably it's not such a big deal for someone who attends several gigs and there's a chance to hear different songs, but when you go to only one... or maybe he's focusing on people who don't follow him regularly, and only know him for Big Girl, GK, Relax, LT, Lollipop and WAG    Definitely! And ask him on social media as well    Edit: Maybe he's preparing a surprise and he'll perform the English version of 30 Secondes outside France

As for social media: "flooding", ( ;-) ) his twitter with: "Please INclude not EXclude (more) french songs"  ?  ; -)

As for the the surprise:  I thought he would do this with MAEP in Paris

I love the new album as well and it's a shame that some of the most beautiful songs are not on the setlist, indeed.

I actually just got a question in my head when I saw your message here showing that he would not sing the songs from his new album lol 😂 cause every time he has tour, I thought its mainly to promote his new album so it's so normal to sing more songs from the new album?

Sad

On 3/27/2024 at 5:29 PM, krysady said:   He could have cut EMD or Banana, there's already a few songs with the same vibe, but 30 Secondes it is so so beautiful live!

20 minutes ago, Prisca said: I'm afraid Mika is not including any new French songs in non speaking French countries this spring.   I don't know if he is going to play Sweetie Banana in Bruxelles (as many people speak French there) and just forgot about it but besides of that I have small hopes. Doesn't mean Mika is never again going to sing Sweetie Banana but for this spring I've low expectations. And sorry for spoilers for people who don't know the setlist: Mika didn't sing "Moi, Andy et Paris" in Geneva yesterday.

I've moved your discussions about the general tour setlist here, so we have them in one place.

As for Sweetie Banana, I suppose he'll play it again at the postponed gig in Brest? Would be strange if he did a different setlist there than he had originally planned. Besides, I'm not too sad about him throwing out that one. Moi, Andy et Paris, I like it, but if Andy didn't like it in the first place that Mika wanted to play it live then it's a nice gesture of Mika to Andy to skip that one and I totally accept that. I hope he keeps Jane Birkin, it's addictive - and I hope he keeps 30 Secondes - he can sing the English version if he wants to have less French songs, I'd love that. Also I don't think he can skip C'est La Vie, it's kind of a key moment of the show and was his key moment of the French album.

As for Elle me Dit, he rarely played it for international audiences, so he can easily replace that one with another song. I assume he'll play it in Brussels, but maybe not in the UK.

Confused

Haha MIKA is really a funny singer and never known what he is thinking lol 😆 😆 😆

And an English version of Bougez... well, that gives hope that he's doing the English version of 30 Secondes too. Did he really replace ALL of the French songs?!

I plan this for Berlin.Did not make sense today as i was on the back of the venus  Because when i do not know the size of the venue like in Berlin i can not wait for that long before the gig bc of walking probs.Could not ask Andy to tell Mika because he was talking to some other people next to me he knew.

When I heard the name of the tour, I immediately thought that Last Party it's the perfect song that would fit to the Apocalypse concept... I hope he will include it on the setlist, it could create a beautiful moment with some visual effects on that big screen.

Yeah, I guess we can try that. I'm glad he kept Bougez, even if from the short snippet I saw I'm not sure I like the English text much, but at least the song is still there, and I might like the text too when I get to hear more of it. And if he sings 30 Secondes in English (did he?!) it's only Jane Birkin that I really NEED back on the setlist. Well, I'd prefer the others too instead of all those old songs. Especially also missing C'est La Vie. I mean, come on, I learned the lyrics of CLV and JB and know them much better than those of EMD! I'll forget them again til my next French gig, if I don't get to practise! 😅

Yeah, I also thought LP would fit perfectly.

Honestly, I'm sad about it and I don't quite get it - people knew that the new album is in French and they were still selling out the tour dates so why is Mika scared to sing the new French songs outside France (if all of them are really out)? 😔 Are we gonna get a festival setlist with Apocalypso stage props? Mika, mais pourquoi? 😭

APOCALYPSE CALYPSO TOUR

Platinum-selling artist MIKA has announced the UK dates of his highly anticipated tour, Apocalypse Calypso. The pop sensation will hit the stage across the UK and Ireland in April 2024, stopping off at The Brighton Centre. With support from Emily Nash.

This announcement follows on from MIKA’s newest release ‘’C’est la vie’’ which is the first single from his first fully French album set for release on December 1st 2023.

Throughout his career, MIKA has crafted a world of gritty romance amidst the joy and playfulness of technicoloured alternative pop. He’s a renaissance artist of impeccable intention.

MIKA opened his pop career in 2007 with the defining single Grace Kelly, which went on to sell over 3 million copies worldwide and was the second British single ever to top the chart on downloads alone.

In May 2022, after a triumphant return to Coachella, MIKA had the honour of acting as an international host of that year’s Eurovision Song Contest. MIKA dazzled the audience with a show stopping medley at the finale with audience figures reaching 161 million viewers.

MIKA has been nominated for and won awards from the Brits, the Grammys, the Ivor Novellos, Capital Radio, Q magazine, The NRJs, The World Music Awards, BT and Vodaphone, Virgin Media and MTV’s Europe, Asia, Australia, and Japan, amongst others. MIKA has now sold over 15 million albums globally and has Gold or Platinum awards in 32 countries worldwide.

Maybe I'm just worrying too much and he'll only replace 1 or 2 of the French songs. I'm sure he'll keep the title track Apocalypse Calypso (tho imo it's not one of the greatest songs live, but without playing the title track, the title of the tour doesn't make much sense I guess) and I assume also Bougez, it's such a great show opener! .

Giant entour e+ 2.

  • Updated motor is very good
  • Full four-season city spec§
  • Pleasant ride with comfortable position
  • Fork is unneccessary
  • Reduced range won't suit everyone
  • Chainguard can be a bit rattly

The Giant Entour E+ 2 is a good quality mid motor city bike with a solid spec. It has plenty of power for the hills and enough range for most people’s city riding. It’s not without its niggles and won’t appeal if you’re looking for a longer-range bike, but it’s a good package for the £1,699 asking price.

The Entour E+ 2 is available in two frame designs, both made from Giant’s ALUXX-Grade Aluminum: tested the diamond frame version in for testing and there’s a step-through option too. The Entour E+ 1, at £100 more, gets a Shimano Nexus hub gear and full chain case in place of the 8-speed Shimano Tourney transmission.

Giant Entour E+ 2 Disc -15.jpg

The bike has a full city-friendly build, with full mudguards and a half chainguard. Spanninga Galeo front and Spanninga Solo rear lights get you seen about town and there’s a good quality kickstand too, mounted on the back of the chainstay so it’s out of the way of the pedals. The bike has a stem that’s adjustable for both height and angle, and the swept bars give a comfortable and upright position for good visibility.

Giant has specced Kenda Kwest 622x37 anti-puncture tyres on the Entour, and there’s a Suntour NEX suspension fork up front to further smooth out the bumps. The bike also sports Tektro hydraulic disc brakes for easy and composed stopping.

Performance: the updated motor is a leap forward

Giant Entour E+ 2 Disc -6.jpg

Giant’s SyncDrive Life motor system is based on Yamaha’s PW motor, but using their own firmware and battery and control hardware. It’s capable of 60Nm of torque, which isn’t far off Bosch’s Performance Line motor, and it’s certainly an eager unit. The assistance starts at 80% assistance, so if you’re putting 100W through the pedals then the bike will add 80W of its own. There’s often a 50% option on Yamaha systems but Giant don’t use that; they reckon it’s good for massaging range figures but not really much cop for actually helping you around. The RideControl LED bar-mounted remote gives you access to all the bike’s controls: it’s basic but it works very well and is easy to read.

Giant Entour E+ 2 Disc -3.jpg

Maximum assistance is 300%, and set to Sport mode the Entour makes mincemeat of Bath’s hills. The gearing is well-matched to the motor: the 8-speed derailleur doesn’t have the widest range, but it’s in exactly the right place. That means you don’t run out of gears on the climbs, and there’s plenty for flat cruising too. I’ve found that the motor assistance on Yamaha-equipped bikes tends to favour torque over cadence more than other systems, meaning that the bike rewards you more when you’re doing more work. That’s the case here too with Giant’s system, but maybe not as much. I still found that if I backed off the effort in high assistance mode then the bike would tend to slow more than you’d get with a Bosch or Shimano system, which in those circumstances give you pretty much full gas so long as you’re turning the pedals, especially Bosch.

Range: okay for most city riding

Giant Entour E+ 2 Disc -5.jpg

This bike is specced with a 300Wh battery. That’s small for a good quality bike, and it’s allowed Giant to hit quite a low price point and keep a good level of equipment. You might think that it’ll mean the bike is compromised on range, and that’s sort of true, although you need to weigh that up against what you’ll be doing. The bike will still give you plenty of range for most of the likely usage it’ll see.

My commute is down to the city centre and then back, up a big hill; my house is 130m above my office so the ride home is basically all uphill. The round trip is only about 9km, but most city bikes with a 400Wh battery will only be able to manage four goes at the hill (I don’t tend to hold back on the assistance) before it’s time to plug them in. The Giant managed three, with a little bit of judicious level choice on the last one. Some high-capacity bikes will do more, as you’d expect, but given the reduced capacity the Giant does about what you’d expect. I never really worried about the range of the Entour: if you’re using it for a commute of 10km or less then a day’s riding isn’t ever going to run it down, and I was plugging it in twice a week. If you’re looking for a bike for longer leisure rides then range might come into play, but it’s not really designed for that. The battery depletion is a little bit non-linear, with the last couple of bars of charge falling away pretty quickly if you’re in a high mode. I managed to run the bike flat on the climb once because of that; it’s a perfectly rideable bike without assistance, although obviously it’s heavy on the hills. There really isn’t much drag from the motor though.

The ride: composed, the fork is surplus to requirements

Giant Entour E+ 2 Disc -7.jpg

Generally speaking the spec is very sensible. The Tektro hydraulic brakes do a great job of stopping the bike even on steep descents, and the chain guard is a bit rattly but gets the job done; I’d prefer a static chainguard to the Chainglider one that Giant use here. I’m not a big fan of the Suntour NEX fork: on an upright bike such as this the need for a suspension fork is pretty minimal anyway, because your weight is over the back of the bike. The fork just feels a bit clunky, topping out over speed humps and generally not doing a brilliant job. The bike would be better without it.

Giant Entour E+ 2 Disc -13.jpg

For the most part though, the Entour is nice and easy to pilot. The swept bars and upright position give it a relaxed feel, and put you nice and high up for a good view of your surroundings. The Kenda tyres aren’t brilliant in terms of their feel but they offer plenty of grip, and they’re big enough to handle the intermittent tarmac that passes for city streets round here; they’re sturdy enough to handle graded trails such as towpaths and fire roads too, if your riding takes you off the beaten path a bit.

Overall: good performance and a sensible package

Under £2,000 you’re always going to get a few compromises if you want a quality mid motor. This bike has a few corners cut, and specs a lower-capacity battery than you’d normally find, but overall it works well as a package and the range won’t be an issue unless your commute is fairly epic. The ride position is good for urban use and it’s fully specced for all-weather, all-year commuting. The upated SyncDrive Life motor is very good, and a good fit for the bike. As an off-the-shelf solution for city riding, it’s a well-considered bike and pleasant to ride.

Hi Dave, I'd love to see a review of the Giant DAILYTOUR E+ 1 LOW STEP THROUGH ELECTRIC BIKE. Looks like a good mix between nice hardware and a relaxed riding position.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

giant daily tour e plus

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

giant daily tour e plus

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

giant daily tour e plus

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

giant daily tour e plus

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

giant daily tour e plus

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

giant daily tour e plus

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

giant daily tour e plus

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

giant daily tour e plus

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

giant daily tour e plus

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

giant daily tour e plus

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

giant daily tour e plus

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Are ‘Forever Chemicals’ a Forever Problem?

The environmental protection agency says “forever chemicals” must be removed from tap water. but they lurk in much more of what we eat, drink and use..

This transcript was created using speech recognition software. While it has been reviewed by human transcribers, it may contain errors. Please review the episode audio before quoting from this transcript and email [email protected] with any questions.

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise. And this is “The Daily.”

[THEME MUSIC]

This month for the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency began to regulate a class of synthetic chemicals, known as forever chemicals, in America’s drinking water. But the chemicals, which have been linked to liver disease and other serious health problems, are in far more than just our water supply. Today, my colleague Kim Tingley explains.

It’s Wednesday, April 17.

So Kim, any time the EPA announces a regulation, I think we all sort of take notice because implicit in it is this idea that we have been exposed to something — something bad, potentially, lead or asbestos. And recently, the EPA is regulating a type of chemical known as PFAS So for those who don’t know, what are PFAS chemicals

Yeah, so PFAS stands for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They’re often called forever chemicals just because they persist so long in the environment and they don’t easily break down. And for that reason, we also use them in a ton of consumer products. They’re in makeup. They’re in carpet. They’re in nonstick cookware. They’re in food packaging, all sorts of things.

Yeah, I feel like I’ve been hearing about these chemicals actually for a very long time. I mean, nonstick pans, Teflon — that’s the thing that’s in my mind when I think PFAS.

Absolutely. Yeah, this class of chemicals has been around for decades. And what’s really important about this is that the EPA has decided, for the first time, to regulate them in drinking water. And that’s a ruling that stands to affect tens of millions of people.

So, help me understand where these things came from and how it’s taken so long to get to the point where we’re actually regulating them.

So, they really actually came about a long time ago. In 1938, DuPont, the people who eventually got us to Teflon, they were actually looking for a more stable kind of refrigerant. And they came upon this kind of chemical, PFAS. The thing that all PFAS chemicals have is a really strong bond between carbon atoms and fluorine atoms. This particular pairing is super strong and super durable.

They have water repellent properties. They’re stain resistant. They’re grease resistant. And they found a lot of uses for them initially in World War II. They were using them as part of their uranium enrichment process to do all these kinds of things. And then —

Well, good thing it’s Teflon.

In the 1950s is when they really started to come out as commercial products.

Even burned food won’t stick to Teflon. So it’s always easy to clean.

So, DuPont started using it in Teflon pans.

Cookware never needs scouring if it has DuPont Teflon.

And then another company, 3M also started using a kind of PFAS —

Scotchgard fabric protector. It keeps ordinary spills from becoming extraordinary stains.

— in one of their big products, Scotchgard. So you probably remember spraying that on your shoes if you want to make your shoes waterproof.

Use Scotchgard fabric protector and let your cup runneth over.

Right — miracle product, Scotchgard, Teflon. But of course, we’re talking about these chemicals because they’ve been found to pose health threats. When does that risk start to surface?

Yeah, so it’s pretty early on that DuPont and 3M start finding effects in animals in studies that they’re running in house.

Around the mid ‘60s, they start seeing that PFAS has an effect on rats. It’s increasing the liver and kidney weights of the rats. And so that seems problematic. And they keep running tests over the next decade and a half. And they try different things with different animals.

In one study, they gave monkeys really, really high levels of PFAS. And those monkeys died. And so they have a pretty strong sense that these chemicals could be dangerous. And then in 1979, they start to see that the workers that are in the plants manufacturing, working with these chemicals, that they’re starting to have higher rates of abnormal liver function. And in a Teflon plant, they had some pregnant workers that were working with these chemicals. And one of those workers in 1981 gave birth to a child who had some pretty severe birth defects.

And then by the mid 1980s, DuPont figures out that it’s not just their workers who are being exposed to these chemicals, but communities that are living in areas surrounding their Teflon plant, particularly the one in Parkersburg, West Virginia, that those communities have PFAS in their tap water.

Wow, so based on its own studies, DuPont knows its chemicals are making animals sick. They seem to be making workers sick. And now they found out that the chemicals have made their way into the water supply. What do they do with that information?

As far as we know, they didn’t do much. They certainly didn’t tell the residents of Parkersburg who were drinking that water that there was anything that they needed to be worried about.

How is that possible? I mean, setting aside the fact that DuPont is the one actually studying the health effects of its own chemicals, presumably to make sure they’re safe, we’ve seen these big, regulating agencies like the EPA and the FDA that exist in order to watch out for something exactly like this, a company that is producing something that may be harming Americans. Why weren’t they keeping a closer watch?

Yeah, so it goes kind of back to the way that we regulate chemicals in the US. It goes through an act called the Toxic Substances Control Act that’s administered by the EPA. And basically, it gives companies a lot of room to regulate themselves, in a sense. Under this act they have a responsibility to report to the EPA if they find these kinds of potential issues with a chemical. They have a responsibility to do their due diligence when they’re putting a chemical out into the environment.

But there’s really not a ton of oversight. The enforcement mechanism is that the EPA can find them. But this kind of thing can happen pretty easily where DuPont keeps going with something that they think might really be a problem and then the fine, by the time it plays out, is just a tiny fraction of what DuPont has earned from producing these chemicals. And so really, the incentive is for them to take the punishment at the end, rather than pull it out early.

So it seems like it’s just self-reporting, which is basically self-regulation in a way.

Yeah, I think that is the way a lot of advocacy groups and experts have characterized it to me, is that chemical companies are essentially regulating themselves.

So how did this danger eventually come to light? I mean, if this is in some kind of DuPont vault, what happened?

Well, there’s a couple different things that started to happen in the late ‘90s.

The community around Parkersburg, West Virginia, people had reported seeing really strange symptoms in their animals. Cows were losing their hair. They had lesions. They were behaving strangely. Some of their calves were dying. And a lot of people in the community felt like they were having health problems that just didn’t really have a good answer, mysterious sicknesses, and some cases of cancers.

And so they initiate a class action lawsuit against DuPont. As part of that class action lawsuit, DuPont, at a certain point, is forced to turn over all of their internal documentation. And so what was in the files was all of that research that we mentioned all of the studies about — animals, and workers, the birth defects. It was really the first time that the public saw what DuPont and 3M had already seen, which is the potential health harms of these chemicals.

So that seems pretty damning. I mean, what happened to the company?

So, DuPont and 3M are still able to say these were just a few workers. And they were working with high levels of the chemicals, more than a person would get drinking it in the water. And so there’s still an opportunity for this to be kind of correlation, but not causation. There’s not really a way to use that data to prove for sure that it was PFAS that caused these health problems.

In other words, the company is arguing, look, yes, these two things exist at the same time. But it doesn’t mean that one caused the other.

Exactly. And so one of the things that this class action lawsuit demands in the settlement that they eventually reach with DuPont is they want DuPont to fund a formal independent health study of the communities that are affected by this PFAS in their drinking water. And so they want DuPont to pay to figure out for sure, using the best available science, how many of these health problems are potentially related to their chemicals.

And so they ask them to pay for it. And they get together an independent group of researchers to undertake this study. And it ends up being the first — and it still might be the biggest — epidemiological study of PFAS in a community. They’ve got about 69,000 participants in this study.

Wow, that’s big.

It’s big, yeah. And what they ended up deciding was that they could confidently say that there was what they ended up calling a probable link. And so they were really confident that the chemical exposure that the study participants had experienced was linked to high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, and pregnancy induced hypertension.

And so those were the conditions that they were able to say, with a good degree of certainty, were related to their chemical exposure. There were others that they just didn’t have the evidence to reach a strong conclusion.

So overall, pretty substantial health effects, and kind of vindicates the communities in West Virginia that were claiming that these chemicals were really affecting their health.

Absolutely. And as the years have gone on, that was sort of just the beginning of researchers starting to understand all the different kinds of health problems that these chemicals could potentially be causing. And so since the big DuPont class action study, there’s really just been like this building and building and building of different researchers coming out with these different pieces of evidence that have accumulated to a pretty alarming picture of what some of the potential health outcomes could be.

OK, so that really kind of brings us to the present moment, when, at last, it seems the EPA is saying enough is enough. We need to regulate these things.

Yeah, it seems like the EPA has been watching this preponderance of evidence accumulate. And they’re sort of deciding that it’s a real health problem, potentially, that they need to regulate.

So the EPA has identified six of these PFAS chemicals that it’s going to regulate. But the concern that I think a lot of experts have is that this particular regulation is not going to keep PFAS out of our bodies.

We’ll be right back.

So, Kim, you just said that these regulations probably won’t keep PFAS chemicals out of our bodies. What did you mean?

Well, the EPA is talking about regulating these six kinds of PFAS. But there are actually more than 10,000 different kinds of PFAS that are already being produced and out there in the environment.

And why those six, exactly? I mean, is it because those are the ones responsible for most of the harm?

Those are the ones that the EPA has seen enough evidence about that they are confident that they are probably causing harm. But it doesn’t mean that the other ones are not also doing something similar. It’s just sort of impossible for researchers to be able to test each individual chemical compound and try to link it to a health outcome.

I talked to a lot of researchers who were involved in this area and they said that they haven’t really seen a PFAS that doesn’t have a harm, but they just don’t have information on the vast majority of these compounds.

So in other words, we just haven’t studied the rest of them enough yet to even know how harmful they actually are, which is kind of alarming.

Yeah, that’s right. And there’s just new ones coming out all the time.

Right. OK, so of the six that the EPA is actually intending to regulate, though, are those new regulations strict enough to keep these chemicals out of our bodies?

So the regulations for those six chemicals really only cover getting them out of the drinking water. And drinking water only really accounts for about 20 percent of a person’s overall PFAS exposure.

So only a fifth of the total exposure.

Yeah. There are lots of other ways that you can come into contact with PFAS. We eat PFAS, we inhale PFAS. We rub it on our skin. It’s in so many different products. And sometimes those products are not ones that you would necessarily think of. They’re in carpets. They’re in furniture. They’re in dental floss, raincoats, vinyl flooring, artificial turf. All kinds of products that you want to be either waterproof or stain resistant or both have these chemicals in them.

So, the cities and towns are going to have to figure out how to test for and monitor for these six kinds of PFAS. And then they’re also going to have to figure out how to filter them out of the water supply. I think a lot of people are concerned that this is going to be just a really expensive endeavor, and it’s also not really going to take care of the entire problem.

Right. And if you step back and really look at the bigger problem, the companies are still making these things, right? I mean, we’re running around trying to regulate this stuff at the end stage. But these things are still being dumped into the environment.

Yeah. I think it’s a huge criticism of our regulatory policy. There’s a lot of onus put on the EPA to prove that a harm has happened once the chemicals are already out there and then to regulate the chemicals. And I think that there’s a criticism that we should do things the other way around, so tougher regulations on the front end before it goes out into the environment.

And that’s what the European Union has been doing. The European Chemicals Agency puts more of the burden on companies to prove that their products and their chemicals are safe. And the European Chemicals Agency is also, right now, considering just a ban on all PFAS products.

So is that a kind of model, perhaps, of what a tough regulation could look like in the US?

There’s two sides to that question. And the first side is that a lot of people feel like it would be better if these chemical companies had to meet a higher standard of proof in terms of demonstrating that their products or their chemicals are going to be safe once they’ve been put out in the environment.

The other side is that doing that kind of upfront research can be really expensive and could potentially limit companies who are trying to innovate in that space. In terms of PFAS, specifically, this is a really important chemical for us. And a lot of the things that we use it in, there’s not necessarily a great placement at the ready that we can just swap in. And so it’s used in all sorts of really important medical devices or renewable energy industries or firefighting foam.

And in some cases, there are alternatives that might be safer that companies can use. But in other cases, they just don’t have that yet. And so PFAS is still really important to our daily lives.

Right. And that kind of leaves us in a pickle because we know these things might be harming us. Yet, we’re kind of stuck with them, at least for now. So, let me just ask you this question, Kim, which I’ve been wanting to ask you since the beginning of this episode, which is, if you’re a person who is concerned about your exposure to PFAS, what do you do?

Yeah. So this is really tricky and I asked everybody this question who I talked to. And everybody has a little bit of a different answer based on their circumstance. For me what I ended up doing was getting rid of the things that I could sort of spot and get rid of. And so I got rid of some carpeting and I checked, when I was buying my son a raincoat, that it was made by a company that didn’t use PFAS.

It’s also expensive. And so if you can afford to get a raincoat from a place that doesn’t manufacture PFAS, it’s going to cost more than if you buy the budget raincoat. And so it’s kind of unfair to put the onus on consumers in that way. And it’s also just not necessarily clear where exactly your exposure is coming from.

So I talk to people who said, well, it’s in dust, so I vacuum a lot. Or it’s in my cleaning products, so I use natural cleaning products. And so I think it’s really sort of a scattershot approach that consumers can take. But I don’t think that there is a magic approach that gets you a PFAS-free life.

So Kim, this is pretty dark, I have to say. And I think what’s frustrating is that it feels like we have these government agencies that are supposed to be protecting our health. But when you drill down here, the guidance is really more like you’re on your own. I mean, it’s hard not to just throw up your hands and say, I give up.

Yeah. I think it’s really tricky to try to know what you do with all of this information as an individual. As much as you can, you can try to limit your individual exposure. But it seems to me as though it’s at a regulatory level that meaningful change would happen, and not so much throwing out your pots and pans and getting new ones.

One thing about PFAS is just that we’re in this stage still of trying to understand exactly what it’s doing inside of us. And so there’s a certain amount of research that has to happen in order to both convince people that there’s a real problem that needs to be solved, and clean up what we’ve put out there. And so I think that we’re sort of in the middle of that arc. And I think that that’s the point at which people start looking for solutions.

Kim, thank you.

Here’s what else you should know today. On Tuesday, in day two of jury selection for the historic hush money case against Donald Trump, lawyers succeeded in selecting 7 jurors out of the 12 that are required for the criminal trial after failing to pick a single juror on Monday.

Lawyers for Trump repeatedly sought to remove potential jurors whom they argued were biased against the president. Among the reasons they cited were social media posts expressing negative views of the former President and, in one case, a video posted by a potential juror of New Yorkers celebrating Trump’s loss in the 2020 election. Once a full jury is seated, which could come as early as Friday, the criminal trial is expected to last about six weeks.

The Environmental Protection Agency has begun for the first time to regulate a class of synthetic chemicals known as “forever chemicals” in America’s drinking water.

Kim Tingley, a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine, explains how these chemicals, which have been linked to liver disease and other serious health problems, came to be in the water supply — and in many more places.
