Like any well-run hotel, restaurant, or other luxury service, a crewed yacht needs organized structure and good management. Whether you’re staffing your own luxury vessel or looking for an exciting career working and traveling the world, you need to know how this structure works, and what you can expect to pay or earn and do in the various roles on board.

Every yacht is a little different, and organization may reflect the style of the captain or the demands of the owner. But the same jobs need to be done on almost every boat. Organized with ranks, heads of each division report to the Captain. It’s not a military-style organization, but there are parallels with merchant marine grades and structures.

Smaller yachts need fewer crew, and staff may wear multiple hats that cross more traditional divisions and may combine some jobs with others. Large yachts have more distinct divisions or subdivisions, with more specialization to divide tasks and manage staffing. The core skills are the same, but finding staff with the right blends to do the jobs is key. Crew with broader skills are highly sought after.

As a yacht owner, you shouldn’t have to worry about day-to-day management decisions or organizing all this. That’s why you have a captain, and it’s better to leave staffing decisions entirely up to him or her. But it’s still important to know what it is people you’re hiring do, why they’re there, and how many you need. You don’t want too many crew, or to be short-handed. An understanding of what your yacht needs helps you talk to the captain to keep your yacht running how you want it.

For those looking to break into yacht crew work, consider your skills and strengths, and what jobs appeal to you. You’ll need training before you work, and you can direct your job path through the training you seek. Your goal is a suitable position on a well-run yacht, so make yourself the most attractive candidate possible.

Yacht Work Life

Working on a yacht is also living on the yacht. Crew must have a space to sleep, food, and all the basics that any employee needs. Large yachts have space reserved for crew, and owners looking for quality crew should provide good working and living conditions. Your crew takes care of you, and you should take care of them.

Depending on where a yacht operates or what flag she flies, a variety of labor laws or rules may be in effect. These requirements may be for work visas, contracts and written agreements, and compliance with merchant and ship crew treaties and laws. Be prepared to have work and non-disclosure agreements between yacht and crew, though a few yachts skip this.

Seasonal Jobs

Many yacht positions are seasonal. Year-round employment is more likely for senior crew like the captain and department heads, but not all yachts see year-round use. And some yachts may use different crew in different locales between seasonal moves.

Any job listing should give seasonal information, with geographic information, the length of the season, and the prospects for year-round positions and repeat employment.

Hours, Salaries, and Expectations

Yacht crew is a service job at its core, and every yacht owner is looking for service-oriented people who understand how to deliver a hotel-quality living and restaurant-quality fine dining. Work experience in luxury hotels and restaurants is a big plus for some jobs, and makes breaking into yacht work easier.

Yacht work can be very demanding, with periods of intense work when the owner and guests or a charter party is on board. Long days aren’t uncommon, but often balance with slack time when the boat is empty of passengers. There is always work to be done, but there’s usually a chance for time off.

Most salaries are monthly, since many positions are seasonal. Pay ranges are commensurate with experience, rank, and responsibility. Private vessels usually offer higher base pay, as charter crew can earn tips on top of their base salary. Because of the demands of the lifestyle, compensation is good and you have minimal living expenses on board.

Benefits and Time Off

Because so many jobs are seasonal and may occur in different countries and locations, benefits offered to yacht crew vary widely. But it is not uncommon for crew to be offered health and accident insurance and a flight to the vessel. Living on board, you’ll get food, rooming (usually shared), basic toiletries, uniforms, and laundry. Yachts with a longer view may offer additional training to long-term prospects.

Time off is usually linked to boat use, and may be sporadic in-season or when the boat has the owner and guests on board. There will always be some time off, but it may be between very intense work periods.

Most crew jobs have an employment contract that meets the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC). This should spell out the contract period and duration, as well as salary, leave and time off, probationary periods, repatriation policies, and any other crucial details to meet the minimum international standards of crew welfare.

This contract should also contain shipboard policies on confidentiality and non-disclosures, drug and alcohol use on board, personal hygiene expectations, interpersonal relationships, and dispute resolution. Job expectations and requirements can also be included, with specific language about roles, tasks, and cooperation between divisions.

Note that all crew agreements will explicitly prohibit drug use on board, most limit alcohol consumption and ban hard liquor on board, and many boats have policies prohibiting intimate personal crew relationships. Because the crew is living on board full time and in close quarters, rules to maintain decorum and crew harmony may be in writing.

Training & Certificates

Two key certifications are required for yacht crew. Employers look for the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers) and the ENG1 (Seafarer Medical Certificate). Insurers generally require crew to have these two certifications or the equivalent.

The ENG1 isn’t a class. It’s a medical exam to ensure that the crew is physically fit to serve at sea and has no underlying conditions that may arise far from help. It’s best for prospective crew to secure the ENG1 before investing more time and money training.

STCW is a week-long class on the basics of onboard safety. This includes hands-on modules covering personal survival, fire safety, first aid and CPR, accident prevention, and security awareness. It needs to be refreshed every five years.

Shared, Hybrid, and Crossover Jobs

Larger vessels will have more defined duties and specific areas of responsibility. But smaller yachts may want the crew to have different roles in different situations. For example, a hybrid job description may read “3rd Engineer/Steward” and describe a role in engineering when the boat is empty but on inside crew when passengers are on board.

When hiring or seeking jobs be prepared to look for creative crossover skill sets to meet the needs of the vessel.

Extra Skills and Duties

Any extra skills outside the regular duties makes crew more attractive. From stewards who can teach yoga, give massages or play cocktail piano to deck crew who know how to water ski, SCUBA dive, or fish, anything that crew can bring to enhance the passenger experience adds value to the employee.

If you’re looking for a position, list the skills you’d be comfortable using. If a vessel owner is looking for something specific, spell it out and figure out how that special duty fits into the employee work day.

The Four Main Divisions

Most yacht crews break into four primary divisions which group related tasks and responsibilities together. While the grouping sounds like it’s by section of the boat, they’re really more functional. For example, stewards (Interior) will definitely serve meals, whether they’re in the main dining room or out on deck. Deckhands (deck) are going to be involved in painting, sanding, and varnish jobs anywhere on the boat.

The deck crew handles most of the exterior operations of the yacht, and runs it. Deck hands and crew keep the boat looking clean and shiny, and handling most vessel operations. This includes driving and operating the yacht, navigation, running all launches and ship’s craft, handling lines, and all maintenance and painting, washing, and shining.

2-Interior (or Inside)

Inside crew are primarily the stewards and housekeepers. Larger vessels will have a dedicated housekeeping staff separate from the stewards, but smaller vessels may not.

Stewards keep the interior clean, do all housekeeping, laundry, food and beverage service, cabin preparation, and anything else needed for the comfort of the passengers.

3-Engineering

Below decks, the engineering department ensures the safe and smooth running of all the ship’s machinery and electronics. Engineers are engine and systems specialists, and there will usually be a dedicated electronics expert. Most engineer jobs require professional training and certification.

Fine dining is a hallmark of the yachting experience, and a full-time galley crew prepares all meals for passengers and crew. The head chef plans the menus and provisions the boat, while junior chefs assist the head chef with meal preparation and keeping the galley spotless.

Yacht Job and Department Details

Departments are all organized in a hierarchy, with a department head reporting to the Captain. The clear chain of command makes for smooth operations, with all communications going up and down ranks. Junior staff will occasionally take instructions from other divisions as all crew is expected to help as needed. A captain or department head may organize staff differently, so reporting structures listed are guidelines only.

All salary ranges are monthly figures and are ranges based on yacht size and crew experience. Senior jobs on larger yachts have more responsibility than the same job title on yachts with smaller crews. Experienced crew are very desirable and can expect more pay for their positions.

Listed responsibilities are not exhaustive, and different yachts may allocate some jobs to different positions.

The Captain

The captain of the vessel is the overall decision maker for the yacht in all situations, including the safety of the vessel. The owner should leave the Captain responsible for operational decisions about hiring and staff and operating the ship. To become a captain requires years of experience and training, and a broad set of skills including yacht operations, personnel management, budgeting and finance. The captain works directly with the owner and owner’s representative, if the captain is not also acting as the representative.

On an organization chart, the Captain is usually placed in the deck division, but the Captain is always the senior-most crew on the yacht and all division heads report to the Captain.

Responsibilities include:

• Responsible for all navigation and running the yacht.
• Senior decision maker on all crew hiring.
• Manage repairs, refits, and yard work.
• Manage budgets and accounting. On larger yachts, this task ends more on the Purser, but the captain is always responsible.
• Ensure all paperwork, clearances, and legal requirements are completed.
• Primary contact with the owner or charter parties.

Reports to: The yacht owner

Salary Range: $6,000 to $22,000

The deckhands handle all the outside responsibilities of the ship, including cleaning and maintenance of the yacht and all the ship’s vessels and toys on board. Deck crew will have significant contact with passengers in this role, operating launches and delivering guests to and from shore and handling the toys.

All deck crew have watch responsibilities on passage, and daily responsibilities keeping the yacht pristine and clean. They will also do line handling and secure the yacht.

Deck department : Chief Mate/First Officer

The Chief Mate or First Officer is the second in command of the vessel, and left in charge when the Captain is not on board. The first mate has the requisite skills to stand in for the captain and run the yacht if needed and usually acts as the division head of the deck team.

The seamanship skills needed are similar to the Captain’s position.

• Primary safety officer for the yacht and all passengers and crew.
• Supervise and manage all operations on deck.
• Bridge watches on passage.
• Passage planning and navigation.

There may be additional mates on larger vessels, these 2nd, 3rd, etc. mates have similar responsibilities on rotation. But the first mate is senior and always second in command.

Reports to: Captain

Salary Range: $4,000 to $9,500 (First mate)

Second and more junior mates may earn $2,000 to $4,000

Deck department : Bosun

The Bosun is the senior deckhand and manages the junior hands on board. This will usually be the most experienced hand on board.

• Organizing all operations on deck.
• Coordinating the use, storing and launching of the ship’s boats, toys, and equipment.
• Managing the passerelle, watching passenger safety.
• Contact point for guest service on boats, toys, and trips to shore.

Reports to: First mate

Salary Range: $3,000 to $5,000

Deck department : Deckhands

Deckhands are constantly busy with maintenance, cleaning, polishing, and assisting guests as needed. They will assist other departments as needed or given special duties.

• Daily cleaning of the yacht’s exterior.
• Painting, varnishing, polishing.
• Line handling.
• Launching and operating dinghies and tenders.
• Repairs and carpentry.
• Helping guests as needed – everything from handling baggage and gear to embarking and disembarking.

Reports to: Bosun

Salary range: $1,300 to $3,000

Though every position on a yacht is service-oriented, the interior or inside crew provides the primary customer service. They will interact the most with the passengers daily, and they’re directly responsible for the quality of their experience on board.

Interior department : the Purser

The purser is the chief financial officer of the yacht and handles all the financial operations on board. Accounting, purchasing, payroll and hiring, and all money matters end up with the Purser. This is a senior staff position, and may be the interior department head. Smaller yachts may eliminate the purser’s job and add it to the captain’s and other senior staff duties.

Responsibilities Include:

• Accounting and bookkeeping for all financial transactions.
• Human resources and payroll.
• Handling logistics for all departments related to purchasing.
• Managing contracts.
• Event coordination, including off yacht bookings and payments.
• Primary administration of the boat’s business paperwork.
• Inventory and supply management.

Salary Range: $4,000 to $8,000

Interior department : The Chief Steward/ess

The chief steward or stewardess has primary responsibility for all service roles inside. Food and drink service, cabin preparation, and anything to do with helping the passengers be more comfortable and enjoy their stay. The chief steward will be inside crew with several years of experience.

The chief steward manages the interior staff, setting and enforcing vessel service standards. The chief steward ensures the crew delivers a five-star hospitality experience.

Chief Steward Responsibilities:

• Scheduling and training junior crew for meal and drink service and cabin preparation.
• Primary contact with guests for meals and drinks.
• Sommelier and wine service.
• Coordinate with the galley for meals and presentation.
• Decorate the interior, from flower arrangement to table settings.
• Arrange onshore activities and outings.

Reports to: Captain or Purser, depending on the yacht

Salary Range: $4,000 to $8,500

Stewards/Stewardesses

The stewards and stewardesses are the primary guest service staff. They will work closely with guests and passengers, and have daily contact with them as they meet most of their needs while on board.

Steward Responsibilities:

• Food and drink service.
• Room preparation and turndown service.
• Cleaning, polishing, housekeeping, and inside maintenance.
• Cabin detailing.
• Laundry, pressing, and folding.
• Help with outings, trips, debarkations.

Reports to: Chief Steward

Salary Range: $1,500 to $4,500

Housekeeping

Larger yachts may have a dedicated housekeeping and laundry staff. This will be part of the inside crew, under either the purser or the head steward. There may be a senior housekeeper, if there are more than one housekeeping crew on board.

Responsibilities are the cleaning and laundry portions of the steward’s job, and a laundry steward may spend most of her time inside the ship’s laundry.

An experienced Head of Housekeeping may earn from $4,500 to $7,000, while a Laundry Steward typically earns from $2,500 to $3,500.

Food service requirements on any yacht are high. Whether it’s a privately owned vessel or a charter, the expectations are always for top tier food service, with a variety of meals planned for the requirements of every passenger. Chefs and cooks prepare all meals on board for passengers and crew, but sometimes other interior crew may help with prep work or cleanup.

Smaller yachts have smaller galley crews, but the largest vessels may have an executive chef and several sous chefs. All chef positions require formal culinary training and experience, but cook positions are often entry level. Promotion from cook to chef is unusual without additional training.

Galley department : the Head / Executive Chef

On larger yachts, an Executive Chef will run the entire galley with the help of sous chefs and cooks. With an Executive Chef, there’s an expectation that the food and menus will be on a level with Michelin star-rated restaurants.

The executive chef brings a thorough understanding of food preparation and presentation, and moves food preparation past creative up to artistic. Job responsibilities are similar to a chef, but the job demands and the required experience and education are much higher.

Salary range: $7,000 to $11,000

The chef has overall responsibility for all meals on the yacht, from provisioning in remote places to hygiene and good safety. If there’s only one chef, she’s the head of the galley crew. Finding the best provisions in far away locations and making the best of local food availability is a major part of the job.

• Planning a delicious and varied menu for passengers.
• Sourcing all food and arranging transport to the yacht.
• Maintaining and operating within the galley budget.
• Preparing passenger meals with professional presentation and style.
• Cleaning and maintaining galley and galley equipment.
• Deliver menus and meals on time, while running an organized and spotless galley.

Galley department : Sous Chef

The sous chefs assist the chef in all aspects of running the galley, and may have independent assignments to plan and guest and crew meals. While not primarily responsible for provisioning, the sous chef will help with food selection, menu preparation, and planning. A sous chef must have formal culinary training.

Reports to: Head chef

Salary Range: $3,500 – $6,000.

Galley department : The Cook

Cooks may be entry-level positions or experienced, but do not require formal gastronomy education. They will assist the chef and sous chefs, cooking meals and dishes for guests and crew, helping with provisioning, and keeping the galley neat.

• Assist with provisioning and buying high-quality food from local sources.
• Follow all food handling and safety guidelines.
• Assist the head chef as needed, taking direction and guidance.
• Prepare guest and crew meals as required.
• Staying on top of galley inventories and supplies.

Salary Range: $2,500 to $3,500

Engineering

The engineering department keeps the yacht and all its systems working. Whether it’s the engines, electronics, air conditioning, or the plumbing – it’s up to engineering to keep it running.

There is considerable overlap with commercial shipping in the engineering field, as many of the same skills apply. And there is a broader range of qualifications and grades based on the size and power of the vessel. Job ratings may be set by required experience based on tonnage of ship or power of engines, with corresponding levels of pay and responsibility.

Unlike commercial shipping, engineers may get involved in other aspects of running the yacht, like helping with docking and water sports with mechanical toys.

Engineering certifications, training, ratings, experience and licensing are critical to hiring competent engineers, and for engineering crew it’s an important facet of career advancement. This is important for Chief and 2nd Engineers, which are often broken out by MCA (U.K. Maritime and Coastguard Agency) rating or other international equivalent.

MCA ratings for engineers Commercial and Private Yachts over 24m are:

Y4: Less than 200 Gross Tons and less than 1,500 kW engine power Y3: Less than 500 GT and 3,000 kW Y2: Less than 3,000 GT and 3,000 kW Y1: Less than 3,000 GT and 9,000 kW

There is also an unlimited rating for merchant vessels larger than the Y1 category. For discussing salary and responsibilities, we will include all ratings in one position description, but pay scales with the size of the yacht and any required higher ratings.

Chief Engineer

The chief engineer manages all aspects of keeping the yacht and its systems running. The chief engineer manages all the engineering staff, and directs all maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting and upgrades. This is a management position, but requires extensive hands-on technical experience and knowledge. • Provisioning, shopping, and stocking.
• Preparing passenger and crew meals.
• Following instructions and cooking under the direction of others.
• Galley cleaning.
• Follow food safety and storage procedures.
• Food pre-preparation.

Salary Range: $6,000 to $15,000

2nd Engineer

The second engineer is also a highly skilled position requiring a rating or license and several years of experience. This senior level engineer also needs knowledge of how to troubleshoot and maintain all yacht systems.

• Maintain and manage all engineering operations.
• Hire, train and supervise all engineers.
• Project manage all upgrades and retrofits, including managing budgets, contracts, and suppliers.
• Coordinate maintenance schedule for the entire yacht around the usage and seasonal schedules.
• Maintain costs and accounting for engineering operations.
• Design and handle all safety operations.
• Set and maintain standards for operations and cleanliness in the engine room.

Reports to: Chief engineer

Salary Range: $5,500 – $10,000

OOW (Officer of the Watch) Engineer

The OOW is a junior engineering position, but still licensed. There are two categories of OOW – MEOL (Marine Engine Operator License) and the more junior AEC (Assistant Engine Course). The overall responsibilities are similar, working to support the senior engineers and handle independent assignments. The AEC rating is entry level for licensed crew, but has training and certification.

• Support the chief in all projects.
• Maintain a clean, safe engine room.
• Perform all maintenance, troubleshooting and repair tasks as needed.
• Support motorized water sports.
• Occasionally assist with other vessel operations, like line handling.

Reports to: Chief Engineer

Salary Range, MEOL: $4,500 to $6,000 Salary Range, AEC: $2,500 to $3,500

Electronics/Technology Officer (ETO)

The ETO takes responsibility for all audio-visual and information technology on board. Ensuring passengers have access to the internet, movies, television, and music is a primary responsibility. This position carries a fair amount of passenger interaction, and an ETO needs good troubleshooting skills to go with customer service skills.

• Ensure all audio/visual and entertainment systems are always available for passengers.
• Assist passengers with personal technology and ship systems as needed.
• Conduct regular maintenance and upgrades of the network, information, and A/V systems around passenger schedules.
• Assist other engineers as needed, especially with electronic systems.
• Contribute as needed with other departments for boat and passenger operations.

Salary Range: $4,000 to $9,000

Junior Engineer

This is a lower or entry level position for someone with engineering skills but without formal licensing or certification. The junior engineer will help with safety and cleanliness, and assist in any engineering tasks as needed. The ability to solve problems and fix things opens this spot for anyone capable and willing to do the job.

• Help with cleaning, maintenance, and safety functions.
• Help anywhere needed on the yacht.
• Assist senior engineers as needed, taking direction and following instructions exactly.

The Bosun on a yacht is the leader of the Deckhands. They will have worked on yachts for at least 2-3 years and are now in a position to be given more responsibilities onboard.

A Yacht Bosun works under the Chief officer onboard and is responsible for managing the Deckhands, among other duties.

Additionally, depending on the size of the yacht, there may be a 2 nd and 3 rd Officer above the Bosun. There could also be anywhere from 2 to 10 deckhands that the Bosun needs to manage.

A Bosun salary can range anywhere from $3500 to $6000 for more experienced Bosuns on larger superyachts.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Bosun on a Yacht

After a few years of experience in the industry, a Yacht Bosun should be able to coordinate daily maintenance and work duties onboard. They are also required to handle watersports during guest activities and liaise with the guests.

Superyacht Bosun job description

The Bosun, sometimes known as the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand, is likely to be an experienced Deckhand who is able to take on extra responsibilities. The Bosun is responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht immaculately and is in charge of the Deckhands. The Bosun undertakes the role of organising deck operations, which usually includes storage, use and maintenance of toys and tenders, equipment, deck maintenance and deck supplies. The Bosun often undertakes bridge watches when at sea.

The Bosun will probably be the main tender driver, and will normally oversee activity on the passerelle (gangway) and will serve in a security role, making sure that guests are embarking and disembarking safely, while ensuring that no one enters the yacht without proper authorisation. It is likely that the Bosun will spend a great deal of time with guests or owners when on board, and therefore a positive attitude and a keen eye for details and service are paramount.

Required Skills and Experience

In order to become a Bosun you would probably have a background in yachting and boating and would generally need experience as a Deckhand. You should have a good understanding of exterior and general deck duties on a luxury yacht and an ability to delegate duties and work assignments to deckhands. Previous experience of helming guest tenders is a distinct advantage. You should be happy working as part of a team and will be prepared to work long hours and be flexible with duties involved.

Required Certification

Officially there are no mandatory requirements for certification or qualifications for Bosuns, however the following would be beneficial:

• MCA Yacht Rating Certificate
• RYA Power Boat level 2 or IYT Tender Driver Licence
• GMDSS VHF/SRC Radio Operators Certificate
• RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or IYT Master of Yachts <200gt
• MCA STCW Master (Yachts) <200gt or STCW OOW (Yachts) Certification
• MCA STCW Basic Safety Certificates are considered essential by many Captains.

Salary Range

A Bosun could expect to earn between £2,500 and £3,500 per month, but with experience this figure could rise to around £4,000 per month on larger yachts.

Career Progression

Superyacht Crew A Bosun could expect to progress to the role of First or Second Officer, depending on the size of the yacht.

Marine Industry A Bosun’s skills are relevant for a range of positions in the wider maritime industry, for example in Port Operations or in the Workboat sector. Opportunities are also available in the Leisure Marine sector, such as working in a marina.

How to Get a Job as a Bosun

If you are an experienced deckhand looking to retire the chamois and make a move up the career ladder, then the role of a bosun is the next logical step. From driving tenders to directing docking procedures, here's everything you'll need to land a job as a bosun on a luxury yacht...

What is a Bosun?

The bosun is the most senior member of the deck department and is ultimately responsible for the upkeep of the exterior of a vessel. They will oversee all operations on deck, including docking and anchoring procedures, delegate daily tasks to junior members of crew, and manage the maintenance of toys, tenders, and other equipment. On yachts that sit below the 50-meter mark, the bosun might be known as the lead deckhand; on bigger superyachts the two roles are generally kept separate with the latter acting as a deputy. 

Bosuns tend to be natural leaders who enjoy the outdoors and don’t mind getting their hands dirty. “The role would suit someone looking to step up who has the practical experience and is willing to go above and beyond the duties of a normal deck crew member to motivate and inspire the team,” says Alwyn Engelbrecht, bosun on board 69-meter M/Y Spectre .

When a bosun position becomes available, the role is often handed to the most experienced and suitably qualified member of that deck department, which means they're not always the easiest to find. “Bosun roles are quite tricky to come by as often the most senior deckhand, who knows the boat best, will be promoted to the role,” explains Fiona Murray, recruitment consultant at YPI Crew. That said, there are still plenty of positions to be filled and it never hurts to have your CV ready to go.

What Does a Bosun Do?

Day to day responsibilities of a bosun will vary depending on the size of the deck team and whether there are guests on board. Bosuns on smaller yachts might be more hands on, while those on larger vessels might take on a more managerial role. 

When guests are on board, it is the duty of the bosun to direct the deck team and ensure the exterior is maintained to the highest possible standard. Duties will include overseeing the setup of the boat each morning, ensuring tenders are launched and toys are inflated before the guests leave their cabins, as well as supervising daily washdowns to ensure the windows are salt-free and the stainless steel is sparkling. "As the seniormost member of the deck team, the bosun is the first up and the last to finish," says Joshua Hayes, former bosun on board 61-meter M/Y Arience . For Hayes, each day starts with a whip-round of the decks, examining the work of the start-up team and “checking for the finer details."

During the day, the bosun will act as a guest liaison for those looking to take the toys for a spin, and, as the primary tender driver on board, is the first to be called upon when guests need taxiing to and from the mothership or when the chef requires a pick-up of last-minute provisions from shore.

When the owner or charter guests are on board, it is a much longer and higher-pressure day. “The usual is a 13-hour workday, a three-hour break at one point and a longer eight-hour break for your main rest, though this differs from yacht to yacht,” says Will Hollingshead, a first officer and former bosun.

When guests are not on board, the bosun will set to work on a list of maintenance tasks with the help of the deck crew. "In the shipyard or during periods of planned maintenance, the bosun will liaise with the officers and captain as to which jobs to prioritize according to time constraints, skills and capabilities of those carrying out the work,” explains Engelbrecht. 

While the captain is ultimately responsible for the safety of guests and crew , they only have one set of eyes. The bosun is therefore in charge of safety on deck and will be well versed in the yacht's safety procedures. “For me safety is at the top of the list as there are a lot of things on a vessel that can hurt or kill someone,” says Hayes. “You are on deck and the one person overseeing activities when the officers are in the bridge."

Who Does a Bosun Report To?

As head of the deck team, the bosun will usually report to first officer or to the captain directly, depending on the size of vessel and number of crew. They serve as a vital link between the deck department and the bridge to ensure the vessel runs as smoothly as possible. “They are the middleman between the officers and crew,” explains Hayes. As such, a bosun can learn a lot about the role of a captain and what it is like to take the helm.

What Qualifications Do I Need to Become a Bosun?

While there is no single document listing the mandatory qualification requirements for a bosun, most yachts will not consider a deckhand for a senior deck position without an STCW certificate , ENG1 medical certificate and PB2 or IYT Tender Driver Licence. A bosun is generally required to hold an RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or IYT Master of Yachts < 200GT (or higher) at the very minimum. “We also check if they have their EDH [Efficient Deckhand] and if they’ve started their OOW [Officer of the Watch] modules - navigation and radar in particular,” says Murray.

Any additional qualifications, such as certificates in water sports tuition or scuba diving, could prove advantageous when you are looking to stand out from the rest. “If you can boost your CV with more OOW modules, Jet Ski instructor’s course, or even an AEC [Approved Engine Course], that will be very valuable,” adds Murray.

What Experience Do I Need?

Prior experience as a deckhand is essential for those looking to step into the boots of a bosun. Generally speaking, the bigger the boat, the more experience you will need. Most yachts will require a minimum of two to three years of experience as a deckhand before considering your CV and recruiters will often favor those who have held a leadership role. For example, a senior deckhand on a 50-70-meter yacht would likely be ready to step up to the role of a bosun.

“To become a bosun on a 50-meter yacht, you would need at least three years of experience as a deckhand," says Murray. "But for bosun roles on 65m+ yachts, captains will normally require the candidate to have previously worked as a bosun on a mid-sized yacht."

What Skills Do I Need as a Bosun?

Yes, longevity on a CV looks good, but you will need to possess the practical skills to back it up. Can you fix a scratch in the varnish or repair a punctured paddleboard? Are you handy with a caulking gun? Do know the secret to removing red wine stains from a teak deck? It is important for a bosun to have knowledge of all sorts of maintenance tasks that may be required to keep a vessel shipshape. 

Good planning skills for preventive maintenance are essential, says Linda Turner at Crewfinders. "There are no repair shops 60 miles offshore. If it breaks at sea, it is your responsibility to fix it to get the vessel and all crew on board back to shore and safety." 

You don’t have to be a maintenance encyclopedia (after all, there is always Google) but the more knowledge you have, the more you can share with your fellow deckhands . The bosun is essentially the chief handyman on board and should also be able to share their knowledge and educate less experienced crewmembers. “As a bosun, you are in charge of keeping the deckhands working well and, most importantly, teaching and growing the skill level of the deck crew. You are only as strong as the weakest member of the team, so you bring them to your level and then take the workload off yourself,” says Hayes. “Not everyone walks on a boat knowing the job. You need to be able to teach and encourage the team to become the best they can and run to the highest ability," says Hayes. 

As well as organizational skills, being able to mediate and delegate, and an eye for detail, positivity, and maintaining a cool head under pressure are also a must for a bosun. “With positivity comes motivation," adds Hayes. "You work some long hard hours and not everyone loves cleaning a boat." Engelbrecht agrees: “You have to know how to motivate people both as a team and individually.” 

How Much Does a Bosun Earn?

The salary of a bosun, or any member of the crew for that matter, will depend on three things: experience, qualifications, and the size of the vessel.

The Dockwalk Salary Guide is the first port of call for any crewmember looking for up-to-date salary information from dozens of crew agencies around the world. A bosun working on a vessel upwards of 120 feet can expect to earn anywhere between $3,800 and $5,000 per month, according to the 2021 Dockwalk Salary Survey. On vessels upwards of 160 feet, a bosun’s monthly salary can earn between $4,000 and $7,000+, while yachts above 260 feet will see a bosun earn around $7,000 or more.

At the same time, it is important to bear in mind that crewmembers living expenses fall somewhere close to zero as most things are paid for when you live and work on a yacht. And those working on charter yachts will often rake in some rather lucrative tips on top of their salary .

Advice for Deckhands Looking to Land a Job as a Bosun

“Make sure you can walk the walk before you talk the talk,” says Engelbrecht. “If you are a lead deckhand or very experienced deckhand looking to take the next step make sure to actively seek knowledge and continue to learn and pass on what you have learned.” It is important that you are confident, but are not so confident that you are unwilling to learn and ask questions.

“You have a very knowledgeable team above you that are always willing to help you and help you progress and learn”, says Hayes. “Learn how to paint, learn how to varnish, ask the bosun to teach you, and question how and why you are doing something. You don’t learn If you don’t ask”!

Hayes also urges deckhands looking to climb the ranks to take their Efficient Deckhand certificate as soon as they can. “It brings in a great deal of safety knowledge and also gives you a different view on the way the deck is run,” he says.

Stew Head of Departments have come to realize the benefits of scheduled or rotational leave, a perk that was once reserved for Engineers or Officer/Captains Departments. Additionally, and in order to compete with the larger yachts, an important number of yachts under 70metres are now also considering increased leave packages to secure top crew. It's important to note that the salaries listed in the report are median range salaries and can vary based on factors such as job-specific skills, professional qualifications, and experience.

• The Superyacht crew hierarchy explained

When you first start looking for Superyacht crew jobs, you’ll most likely be considering becoming a Deckhand or Stewardess.

These are two of the most popular entry point roles into a Superyacht career, and – as we never tire of saying here at Flying Fish – promise an abundance of benefits and incredible experiences!

Of course, these are not the only Superyacht crew jobs on offer, and if you are about to or have completed your Deckhand or Stewardess training, you may be wondering what other kinds of crew members you’ll be working with.

What’s just as important to know however is the hierarchy of those crew members; not only so that you know who to report to in different situations, but so that, if you want to progress your career beyond the Deckhand or Stewardess role, you’ll have an idea of the best path to take!

To help you out, we’ve outlined the hierarchy of a Superyacht crew for you below…

Depending on the size of the Superyacht, the hierarchy of a Superyacht crew goes something like this:

Working under the owner of the Superyacht or the owner’s representatives, the Captain of a Superyacht is responsible for the safe and smooth running of the ship – so he or she is who you will ultimately need to answer to!

The duties of the Captain go beyond navigation and the sailing of the vessel to managing admin, health and safety, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, financial reporting and much more.

If you’re looking to become a Superyacht Captain yourself, you’ll need to have worked your way up from the majority of the other roles in this blog, as well as undertake a number of other qualifications and be able to demonstrate a variety of knowledge and skills, including seafaring, admin, IT, health and safety, and even accounting.

2. Officer of the Watch (OOW)

The OOW is second in command to the Captain and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the deck, as well as taking care of navigation and running watches when on passage.

They’ll also have a significant hand in the maintenance of the Superyacht, as well as being in charge of the deck equipment inventory.

If this is a role you’d like to progress to, there are several different paths you can take, all of which we’ve shared in our blog “ Becoming an Officer of the Watch (OOW) ”.

This is one of the lesser-known roles on a Superyacht (as their duties will usually fall to the Captain on smaller vessels), but is nevertheless important!

In brief, the Purser works under the captain, taking charge of financial matters on the Superyacht (e.g., accounting, purchasing food, drink and cleaning supplies etc.), as well as taking care of HR and recruitment.

In fact, they may well be one of the first people you meet when you begin applying for Superyacht crew jobs!

In order to become one, you’ll need to have sound knowledge and experience of the Superyacht industry, and have a range of financial and IT skills and qualifications under your belt on top of your STCW certificate and ENG1 Medical certificate.

4. Chief Engineer

A Superyacht is a vast and complex vehicle – so, as well as Deckhands taking care of its exterior, it also needs someone to manage it’s mechanical functioning – and that’s where the Chief Engineer comes in!

In a nutshell, the Chief Engineer (and the 2nd Engineer who works under him/her) are responsible for ensuring that every aspect of the Superyacht’s mechanics runs without a hitch.

If Chief or 2nd Engineer is a role you’d like to pursue, starting off with Deckhand training is a good choice, as it will provide you with a good introduction to Diesel Engine Maintenance and general maintenance and repairs.

5. Head Chef

A Superyacht holiday wouldn’t be complete without delicious meals for guests to enjoy. Every Superyacht therefore has an appointed Head Chef to take on the role of providing these to the highest possible standard throughout the day.

To become a Head Chef on board a Superyacht, you’ll need to have completed all the necessary culinary qualifications to become a chef and have comprehensive experience of working as a Head or Sous Chef in a hotel or restaurant. You’ll then also need to have your STCW Basic Safety Training certification on top!

Working as a Crew Chef (working under the Head Chef and making meals for all the members of the Superyacht crew) is a great entry point into this role.

“Bosun” is another term for “Senior Deckhand.” Their role is to take charge of daily cleaning and maintenance tasks, as well as drive the yachts tenders and (if on a larger boat requiring more crew) look after the Deckhands working under them.

After a few seasons of experience and proven hard work and dedication as a Deckhand, you’ll be in a great position to apply for a Bosun job!

7. Chief Stewardess

The Chief Stewardess is in charge of the Superyacht’s interior, including laundry and service. It is their duty to ensure that guests on board have a five-star experience around the clock! Like the Bosun, the Chief Stewardess will also be in charge of looking after a team of Stewardesses, depending on the size of the boat.

Again, as with a Deckhand, after a few seasons working as a committed and stand-out Stewardess, the Chief Stewardess role will be within easy reach.

8. Deckhand

The role of the Deckhand is to maintain and clean the exterior of the yacht to ensure that it is in perfect condition at all times.

The Deckhand is also involved in other deck operations , mooring, anchoring and sometimes security.

This, along with the Stewardess, is at the bottom of the Superyacht hierarchy, and is best pursued after the completion of a Superyacht Deckhand course .

9. Stewardess

As a Stewardess, you’ll be assisting the Chief Stewardess to ensure that guests on board the Superyacht enjoy only the best possible experience.

This involves working on the interior of the yacht, including service, cabin preparation and providing guests and owners with whatever they need.

Although you can work as a Stewardess without any prior experience (same as a Deckhand), it’s always a good idea to undertake a Superyacht Stewardess course first and gain a number of other skills to give you the upper hand when applying for roles!

How Much Does a Bosun Make?

The bosun salary on a yacht can vary depending on several factors, including the size and type of the yacht, the level of experience, and the geographical location. Generally, the salary range for a bosun falls between USD 3,000 and USD 6,000 per month. However, it’s important to note that these figures are approximate and can vary significantly.

In addition to the base salary, bosuns may receive additional benefits such as health insurance, paid vacation, and bonuses based on performance. It’s worth mentioning that the yachting industry is known for its tips culture, and a bosun can receive a share of the gratuities from the guests, which can significantly boost their overall earnings.

It’s important to keep in mind that salaries and benefits can differ depending on the yacht’s size, reputation, and the experience level of the bosun. As with any position in the yachting industry, the compensation for a bosun is highly competitive and can be influenced by the demand for qualified professionals.

The salaries of the Below Deck cast members have become one hot topic among fans. Most reality TV stars get paid to be on a show. It may not be a lot, but there is a stipend.

Below Deck is different, though, because the cast is also working as crew members on a boat. Each person involved has a job, besides being part of the reality TV show. Not only do cast members get paid by the network, but they also get a yacht salary and tips.

Salary breakdown

Working on a yacht can be extremely profitable. According to a report by RealityBlurb, during a regular charter season, which is months long, the chief stew makes $62,000 to $75,000. The second and third stew salaries run $35,000 to $50,000.

The chef banks between $70,000 and $95,00, while the captain is guaranteed $100,000 or more. A bosun like Ashton Pienaar can make up to $50,000 per charter season. Last but not least are the deckhands, who can pocket $40,000 and upward. All salaries are based on experience, so Captain Lee Rosbach and chief stew Kate Chastain are likely at the top of the salary pool.

It is important to remember these salaries are based on the months-long charter season. The Below Deck season is only six weeks long because it is condensed for television. Cast members would receive a fraction of those salaries since the season is so short.

Bravo does not reveal if or how much it pays the cast members to appear on Below Deck. One Reddit user claims to have inside information that the network pays a small sum to each person.

Tip breakdown

Kate recently spilled the breakdown of how yacht tipping works in the real world. The chief stew admitted that on a typical seven-day charter, each person on the boat should receive $5,000 for a job well done.

Below Deck charters are two days, so an excellent tip is $17,000 to $20,000, which breaks down to around $1,800 per person.

On the Season 7 finale of Below Deck, Captain Lee stated the group earned as a whole $150,000 in tips for the six-week charter season. Broken down, that means everyone walked away with $14,000 in tip money.

For example, on a yacht the size of the My Seanna from Below Deck , a second and third steward makes about $5,000 monthly, while a chief steward brings in around $5,500 to $6,000 monthly. The chef makes about $7,000-$10,000 a month, depending on experience and training. The deckhands usually make around $3,500-$4,500 a month, while a bosun would make a little more at approximately $5,000 monthly.

The Below Deck Crew Also Brings In Tips

The crew even receives tips from the guests on top of their salaries. On Below Deck , they usually bring in around $15,000 per person in tips for about six weeks of work. Plus, the team does not work a whole yacht season, so they likely make more as they move from boat to boat. The Captain usually makes between $150,000 to $210,000 a year working on a 185-foot superyacht , assuming the Captain is working full-time. Additionally, the Captain can make up to $100,000 on top of the salary they are getting if they charter their yacht for the entire year.

On top of the money they make on the yacht, the crew also gets a small fee for appearing on Below Deck . According to Page Six , the crew makes about $5,000-$6,000 per month. Ashley Marti from Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 3 confirmed this and believes the Bravo pay discrepancy with Below Deck is unfair. The Real Housewives makes upwards of $1 million per season, while the Southern Charm cast makes around $25,000 an episode.

Tips represent a significant financial incentive for the dedicated team on a superyacht. Operating on a charter yacht, in particular, provides crew members with an excellent chance to supplement their income. But just how much can they expect to earn in tips? Well, that varies widely, ranging from 5% to 20% of the charter cost, with around 10% being the common practice, distributed among all crew members.

While living on a private yacht might not offer the same level of tips, it does come with its own set of crew benefits. These include enhanced rest periods, extended vacations, bonuses, and even the possibility of unexpected contributions from the owner, as yacht owners are often known to provide tips.

This yachting salary is approximately 10 years out of date! Something needs to change. This includes yachting associations and pages to stop spreading these ridiculous salaries which have not changed in 10 years! Start sticking up for the people that actually need an increase too. Many of us are also paying expensive at home and providing for families. Your salary goes up on shore based jobs, increase of food and bills etc. something needs to start happening for us! Maybe start a tan page for seafarers to get together to fight against salaries never increasing. Also a stew earning the same or just slightly less than a bosun is out outrageous. Bosun puts in thousands of pounds for course etc and a stew gets that just because. Backwards. Not against stews but adjustment in a sense needs to happen. Don’t know how, but it needs to. Eg, yachts must pay for courses then – Industry standard.

How to Become a Yachtie

 To get started you will obviously need to apply for an entry level role, that is, either for the post of a yacht stew or a yacht deckhand.

There is a common misconception that managing to work on a luxury yacht is something that only the elite can aspire to, and many have no idea where to start.

However, if you have the right understanding of what the posts entail, the respective requirements and the certifications required, you can manage to work as a yachtie.

The following guidelines should help you to set out on the right track.

This is a must to work as a yachtie.

The ENG1 medical is basically an examination which is carried out by an approved MCA doctor.

The main aim is to ensure that the prospective yachtie is fit and able to work at sea.

This exam generally takes around 45 minutes and you'll undergo a number of basic tests and checkups so that the doctor can ascertain whether you are fit enough to work aboard a sea vessel.

This is important both for your own safety as well as for those who will be on board the yacht.

Any underlying health conditions will need to be investigated.

For instance if one is colour blind, working onboard a ship is not possible as he or she would not be able to identify signals and lights.

Therefore during an emergency at sea, this could be critical.

You can only get a job on a yacht provided that you have completed your STCW Basic Safety Training course.

STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping.

The aim of this course is to ensure that all seafarers have a good understanding and knowhow of how to act in case of an emergency.

This is very important at sea and there are a number of procedures which will need to be followed.

This training course will cover areas such as sea survival, first aid and fire fighting, among others.

There are various courses which you could attend in order to be better qualified.

Doing so will demonstrate that you have all the necessary skills to get your desired job on a yacht.

Examples are a Deckhand course or Stewardess course, or more specialised courses such as food related courses, flower arranging, maintenance and repairs etc.

The more qualifications you manage to gain, the better you will demonstrate that you're committed to embarking on such a job.

Besides formal qualifications, it's imperative to have the right attitude.

A yachtie needs to be a pleasant and approachable person, who is able to keep an eye on details and show enthusiasm.

You need to be willing to work long hours but still keep a smile on your face.

Stressful conditions are to be expected, but you need to be able to be patient and enthusiastic nonetheless.

Good social and communications skills are a must, as well as being a team player too.

Yachtie Job Positions

 As mentioned earlier, there's various different yachtie job positions.

A yacht captain is one of the top positions, where the salary is often quite high.

Such a role requires a bachelor's degree in maritime transportation, along with considerable deckhand experience.

A yacht captain is also required to undergo a security and background check, as well as take the Merchant Marine Credential exam.

The 1st officer, or the chief officer, is the second in command to the captain.

They will assist the captain in various duties and are responsible for the safety of the yacht and all passengers and crew members.

Some duties include navigation and bridge watches.

A 1st Officer will normally have started their career as a deckhand, and progressed from there.

Salaries are typically between $37,500 and $95,000 per annum, depending on the individual's experience, qualifications, and the size of the vessel.

The 2nd Officer acts as an aid to the 1st Officer.

They will be responsible for navigation monitoring, carry out bridge watches, and to keep charts and publications updated.

Salaries are generally around $42,000 per annum, although they may be higher for those who work on larger yachts.

A deckhand will launch as well as dock the yacht.

Boating experience is required, especially with regards to yacht maintenance and basic repairs.

Scuba experience is considered to be a major plus.

Deckhands are required to help guests with luggage, drive tenders as well as clean the decks.

Their role is to oversee the proper running of the mechanical aspects of the yacht, which also includes planned maintenance and repairs.

They will also be managing other engineers in case of larger vessels.

A chief engineer will likely be paid around $52,500 per annum on a small vessel, and can earn up to $24,000 per month on 100m+ vessels.

The chief stew will be responsible for the interior of the vessel, as well as the other stews.

This position pays between $58,000 to $70,000 per annum for smaller vessels, and $60,000 to $76,000 per annum on board larger yachts.

A chief stew will inevitably have considerable experience working as a stew.

Extensive knowledge of silver service, bartending, wine presentation and service is deemed necessary in most cases.

The second and third stewardess positions will support the Chief Stewardess.

As such, salary ranges are generally good too, often between $46,000 to $66,000 per annum.

These will vary depending on the size of the yacht one works on.

A yacht chef is generally required to have at least some maritime training, as well as the STCW95 Basic Safety Training.

One is also expected to have considerable experience in working in restaurants, particularly luxurious or prestigious establishments, as well as having graduated from a recognised culinary school.

When it comes to salary ranges, yacht chefs generally make between $64,000 to $94,000 each year.

Most yachties earn a good base salary.

If you're a new yachtie, you can expect to make around $2,500 per month.

Over time with more experience and more qualifications, your salary could rise in the range of $3,500 and $4,000 a month.

You'll also be pleased to learn that if you work on a yacht outside of UK waters for at least 183 days per tax year, you qualify for the Seafarers Earning Deduction .

This is a government scheme which enables you to keep 100% of your income, as you will not be required to pay tax on earnings.

However, a yachtie who works onboard a charter yacht will end up working with limited time off and for longer periods.

Hence often guests give liberal tips, although it depends on the individual.

The overall experience and attitude of the yachtie will have an impact on tips received.

Needless to say, if a guest has noted that a yachtie has gone over and above his or her work, it should lead to more generous tipping.

The Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association has recently issued a tipping policy guideline that states that the customary tipping range for yachties is between 5% and 15%.

The way in which crew tips are shared and distributed on board a superyacht will differ from what happens on other yachts.

In most cases, the charter guests are advised to give the tips directly to the captain so that he will be able to see that they are split in a fair way between all the crew members.

However, a guest may still tip an individual member of the crew privately of course.

Working as a yachtie is undeniably a fascinating job, especially if you have the right attitude and love the idea of life at sea.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."
