IFC is Insetta Boatwork's Internal Foiling System.

You can expect a significant increase in cruise speed; Improved handling and stability in rough conditions; Better acceleration; A boat that is less affected by increased payload; A 20-40% increase in fuel efficiency; and a 20-40% further cruise range! Additionally, the IFC technology will also provide a drier ride in choppy conditions and Provide for more responsiveness when turning at speed!

The system is a fixed setup, there is nothing to operate and there are zero moving parts.

The IFC Technology in effect smooths out rough seas by allowing the boat to run from wave crest to wave crest at a relatively smooth and stable attitude. The IFC System creates lift which help to in effect “Carry” the hull higher in the water. The system acts as a set of wings carrying the boat at speed, keeping the hull from having to follow each wave across its entire contour. In other words the surface of the waves have less effect on the hull as the IFC system is lifting the boat. Additionally, the aerodynamic lift created by the catamaran hulls creates even more lift at the bow of the boat, keeping the nose high and preventing the “slamming” or sneezing found in other catamaran hulls.

No, you don’t. The foils are flush mounted to the bottom of the keels of each sponson (as well as up in the tunnel.) At its centerline the main foil of the IFC system is only slightly lower than the keel line. The boat will easily load onto a standard catamaran trailer. There is no big contraption hanging way down under the boat.

Remember, the foils are INTERNAL to the tunnel. At its lowest point the main foil is only slightly lower than the hull and is higher than the props. Because of this the odds of striking the foils are extremely low. The boat is designed to be lifted by the foil. The structural integrity of the foil system is such that the weight of the boat could be supported many times over by the foil. As such, if you did somehow manage to strike the foil on something EXTREMELY SUBSTANTIAL, like a stone shoal, the likely outcome is that you may (in a very worst case scenario) bend or break a foil wing. If that were to happen, you could still operate the boat to port with the remaining foils. The IFC foils are made from a very high-grade stainless steel and designed to meet or exceed relevant guidelines for impact and strength.

As water travels through the tunnel and around the foil, a tremendous vortex is created. This force keeps most debris from being trapped in the tunnel or around the foil. Between the pressure of the air moving through the tunnel, and the vortex created in the water, the tunnel and foils will stay clean and clear.

The outboards of the 35 IFC are mounted on a slight outward angle to place the propellers properly to maximize the thrust and flow efficiency created as the water travels through the tunnel and around the foils. This mounting also helps the boat to lean into a corner, much like a monohull.

Firstly, we’d ask, “Why would you want to?” But the short answer is no. IFC is an integrated system that is integral to the design of the boat.

The short answer is that boats with technology similar to IFC have been in use for many years, but not in the recreational market. Commercial and Military applications are quite prevalent. The initial design of a hull and system like this is quite complex and can be cost prohibitive. We at Insetta feel the gains in efficiency, speed, range and ride quality far outweigh the initial design and build cost.

Upon deciding to build a foiling Cat, Insetta assembled a team of naval Architects and Marine Engineers to refine an existing and proven design. Using their own state of the art construction techniques, Insetta brought an application specific version to the fiberglass Center Console market.

Why did Insetta Boatworks decide to build a boat with IFC?

For decades, Hydrofoil power boats have proven to be the most efficient craft for a variety of offshore operations.

While pursuing a B.S. in physics in 1960, Victor Insetta was employed doing anti-submarine research that utilized high speed Deep-V patrol boats equipped with hydrofoils. Their ability to pursue submarines at high speed, operate safely offshore, and, being foil borne: allowed their hull to run clear of the water avoiding direct hits from torpedoes. Decades later, Vic and his family rode comfortably on hydrofoil ferries in Italy, flying over white capped waves in the bay of Naples.

In 2017, The Insetta 45 was chosen to be the official chase boat of the America’s cup! Four 45’ Insetta’s catamarans were shipped to Bermuda to assist at various cup events. Sailboats, competing from several countries, were catamarans with hydrofoils ! The Insetta 45’s ran parallel to these “foiling sail cats” to assist with TV coverage. The sailing cats were traveling at speeds approaching 50 mph, 2 ½ times the wind speed . Efficient … you bet . They could also turn on a dime at over 40 mph…

It became obvious: that a foiling cat would make a great offshore outboard power boat… Many foil power boat designs in the past, had wide foils that stuck out the sides, increasing their beam and draft. It made them difficult to dock, and they couldn’t operate in shallow waters. Joel Shine (chief operating officer) of Insetta Boatworks found a catamaran design that had hydrofoils mounted in the tunnel, (that location between the tunnel walls actually improves their efficiency), and does not add to its draft. Further improvements could be added by using our ultra-light high strength infused composite construction.

Joel, Vic and our technical staff reviewed the foiling cat’s initial specifications and performance data, and then sea trialed two foiling cats with internal hydrofoils. Our staff includes a second physicist and pilot… Glen Dobbs. We are all active boaters and we determined we would build our version of a foiling outboard powered cat. We contacted a Naval architect, who designed several successful foiling power cats . He is now a member of our technical staff.

Our 35 “foiling cat” design has set the standard for Foil-Assisted Sportfishing boats. The hull, foils, materials, and engines are synergistically combined, to provide: unrivaled high-speed cruising efficiency , and provide safe offshore handling, with unimpeded shallow water operation, including beaching, without foils or props contacting the bottom.

Inspiration becomes a Mission then a Partnership

It was on a kitesurfing outing in which Todd was using a hydrofoil that gave him the smooth ride he was seeking from within the boating world. Todd’s mission was now clear, develop and launch an unrivaled hydrofoil-assisted, power catamaran. Utilizing his tier-one experience and extensive network with the top naval architects and designers around the globe, he decided the right team for the project was Morrelli & Melvin Design and Engineering.

Starting with a 24 foot prototype, they honed the platform and are now setting the new standard in power catamarans starting with fully customizable 25’ and 33.5′ platforms.  Todd and his team are excited to bring this unique boating experience to the water. Using Hydrofoils to Improve Boat Performance

In my early days as a captain, few boats cruised faster than 30 mph. Back then, bigger engines and the fuel they burned added too much weight, netting little more speed. Today, even modest performers top 50 mph thanks to lighter engines and boat construction, where more ponies push fewer pounds.

Electric propulsion leaves boats yet again ­struggling in that extra-­pounds paradigm. ­Adding fuel—­ measured in kilowatt-­hours of lithium batteries—attenuates attempts to go faster and farther, at least until batteries become lighter. But there might be another way. I tested an electric-powered SunTracker Party Barge 22 DLX both before and after Hydrofin installed its hydrofoil system, which lifts a boat while moving through the water. This effectively overcame 800 pounds of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries—40 kilowatt-hours—that fueled twin Elco EP-50 electric outboards. In the end, flying on foils increased the boat’s speed by well more than a third and improved efficiency markedly. So, what are hydrofoils, and can they enhance performance aboard other boats too?

Performance Takes Flight

“We’re a long way from batteries that provide lightweight energy. Our hydrofoils create lift to overcome that additional weight,” says Jason Minor, Hydrofin’s founder. The patented system, engineered by noted catamaran and America’s Cup sailing foil-design firm ­Morrelli & Melvin of ­Newport Beach, ­California, utilizes powder-coated aluminum foils—essentially underwater wings. Mounting pads epoxied to hulls allow incremental adjustment of location and angle of attack, so Hydrofin foils lift nearly half a boat’s weight. “A typical bi-toon with a gas 150 runs around 30 mph. Adding Hydrofin foils can easily make it run 37 to 39 mph,” Minor says, adding that 30 percent better economy is common at cruising speeds. Riding higher on wings makes boats run smoother, dryer and quieter too. (See our Hydrofin test on a Misty Harbor 2528 pontoon with a Merc 150 hp gas outboard at boatingmag.com/hydrofin .)

Put to the Test

Hydrofin foils lifted so much battery weight that our Elco-powered test boat required larger propellers to see full improvement. Comparing performance from the final propellers, with foils removed, the boat reached 17.2 mph turning just 5,400 rpm and drawing an overloaded 67.2 kW. With ­Hydrofin foils installed, those same props turned 5,750 rpm to reach 24.9 mph at 58.56 kW. The original propellers, without hydrofoils, reached 6,000 rpm and 17.9 mph while consuming 49.06 kW, which we used to compute 39 percent increased speed and 16 percent improved efficiency with hydrofoils installed.

Worth the Weight

Minor says that about one-third of installations benefit from new props, which is expected when essentially lightening a boat by half. Those underwater wings alleviate passenger weight too, which often impacts gas-powered pontoon boatspeed. “A boat might lose 6 or 8 mph when full of people,” Minor says, versus carrying minimal crew. “That same boat would see just a 2 or 3 mph drop with our hydrofoils installed.”

Tri-toons, with lift from a third hull and planing strakes, tend to benefit a bit less. Minor says that gas tri-toons typically see 15 to 25 percent increase in speed or fuel economy. On a 25-foot Qwest Tri-toon powered with a prototype 350 hp equivalent Hyper Electric outboard and 1,150 pounds of batteries, Minor reported that the boat gained from 15 percent to 29 percent efficiency in the 20 to 35 mph cruising range. Hydrofin foils proved 7 percent more efficient at 43 mph, which was wide-open throttle without the foils, and they added 6 mph top speed, reaching 49 mph at the same 270 kW. Foil Downsides

While Minor was installing the Elco-powered test boat’s foils—about a half-day procedure—I kept an eye out for pitfalls. Foils increase draft by about 4 inches, but they’re ­mounted well aft of amidships, where they shouldn’t interfere at most beaches. Modifying the boat trailer’s inner bunk impacted aligning the boat back onto the trailer at the ramp, but this can be easily remedied with side guide pipes common on monohull trailers. In a hard grounding or collision, foils are engineered to break away, and Minor reports no damage to hulls or mounting pads, only foils themselves, in the few times it has occurred. Operating in very shallow water would surely be problematic, but Hydrofin’s optional electric-actuated system fully retracts well above a ­pontoon’s bottom.

Other Boats

Hydrofin’s system adapts to nearly all pontoon and tri-toon boats, and they’ll work on small power catamarans but not monohulls. “The foils need a gap away from the hull,” Minor explains, which comes when they’re mounted between two hulls. Hydrofin’s foils also won’t work past about 55 mph, when water flow causes foil cavitation.

Long-standing ­wisdom maintains that more ponies pushing fewer pounds increases speed. That’s still true, but Hydrofin shows that boats can also grow wings and fly.

How Hydrofin Foils Attach to the Hull

On twin-hull boats, Hydrofin hydrofoils mount to pads epoxied to hulls between pontoons, with braces extending upward to the deck. Foil location and angle of attack adjust fore-and-aft trim and total lift. Finlets mounted aft add more lift to further tweak the boat’s  ride and trim.

Oversize fins, chosen to carry battery weight, range from 343 to 1,822 pounds lift at 25 mph. 

Tri-toons utilize a modified mount and fins that ­create from 537 to 1,021 pounds of lift at 25 mph, where a 25-foot Qwest tri-toon with Hyper Electric ­Marine’s 350 hp electric outboard was 29 percent more efficient with Hydrofin foils installed, while top speed increased by 6 mph, according to Hydrofin.

Yacht Hampton charters and boat rentals operate 7 days a week seasonally, starting May 1st and until October 15th.

Charters generally operate during the below timeframes unless guests wish to book a 7-hour trip:

Due to high demand, captains must depart at these times in June, July, August, and on weekends. On weekdays, there is more flexibility with start times.

Full payment is due at booking. Dates/times can be changed when you notify us in writing of your request >30 days before the sailing date. This will allow us time to sell your original slot to someone else.

WEATHER/CANCELLATION POLICY

Florida weather is inconsistent, with many “passing showers” so for that reason we have a no persistent rain and small craft advisory policy so we do not set sail if it is consistently raining or a forecast constant rain >15 minutes is imminent in the forecast.

We also obviously care about your safety, so we will not set sail in unsafe weather and during any small craft advisory. We will generally make those decisions 2-hours before sailing time. If our captain decides not to set sail that day, due to rain or if a small craft advisory is in effect, you will have the option to receive a rain date for a period of 28 months. This allows you 3 seasons to reschedule. We will apply your payment and you will receive that credit to sail again within the next 28 months.

Once a client books a boat we notify all subsequent inquiries that “the boat is unavailable and taken”, so for this reason we do not offer any refund on cancellations. If you cancel a reservation greater than 30 days away we do allow a no-cost change of date. This new high speed ferry is an electric hydrofoil catamaran

Green city ferries of stockholm unveils zero emission ferry – high-speed electric hydrofoil catamaran powered by batteries and/or hydrogen fuel cells..

Green City (GCF) bills itself as a ‘system integrator’ and their new ferry, the Beluga24, demonstrates their capabilities perfectly in bringing together technologies from all over the world: Sweden, New Zealand, Italy, Japan and Canada.

Naval Architect Hans Thornell founded the company in 2013 to combine three things: his passion for the environment and commitment to reducing carbon emissions, his education as a Naval Architect at Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology, and his long experience as a management and supply chain consultant.

Electric hydrofoil catamaran designed for city transit

The all new Beluga24, with its foil-assisted catamaran design and battery/fuel cell propulsion, was designed from the outset to be a solution for the new and future challenges faced by water-situated cities around the world.

Officials in these places are eager to use the water for public transport and commuting, but the boats need to live up to citizen demands for a lot of things: short travel time, personal comfort, frequent departures, and an increasing urgency not just for cleaner air and less smog, but also visible and meaningful ways to address carbon emissions and their role in climate change.

By integrating design, technologies and experts from literally all over the world, the Beluga24 ticks off all the boxes for urban commuters and governments.

Rapid transit, quick charging, comfortable, convenient

For short travel time, the Beluga24 turned to Nic de Waal and Teknicraft of New Zealand, whose foiling technology has been proven on numerous boats and ships. A foil is placed midship that lifts the ferry halfway out of the water at high speed, reducing the water resistance and enabling more speed from less energy. “We expect a consumption of 30 kWh per nautical mile at 30 knots, which is almost half of what a conventional catamaran consumes,” says company CEO Fredrik Thornell.

There is also has room for 30 bicycles, which are becoming an important part of the transportation mix for cities working to combat climate change.

Frequent departures and zero emissions? The Beluga has it covered. The power supply comes from Japanese lithium titanite oxide (LTO) batteries – the same chemistry used for the fast charging of the Movitz. Hydrogen fuel cells are sourced from Canada, and depending on the customer’s preference the ferry can be built to run off batteries, fuel cells, or both.

Greater efficiency = lower costs

With their experience on the Movitz and other public transportation projects,  Green City knows there is another part of the equation that civic officials are looking for beyond passenger convenience and cleaner operation: costs.

For many PTAs (Public Transit Authorities) the most important service GCF provides is innovative financing that simplifies allocating or raising the funds needed, reduces costs, and cuts the time it takes to put new boats into service from years to months.

The final piece in the international expertise of the Beluga24 development is the headquarters of GCF itself: Sweden. The country has decades of experience building ships in carbon fibre and the first Beluga24s will initially be built in Sweden, going into the water for 2023. Green City Ferries has full exclusivity to build and sell this type of ship in carbon fibre globally.

CEO Thornell says “The Beluga24 is demonstrating a high-speed emission-free alternative to diesel ferries that also costs less to operate. It’s a solution highly attractive to transport administrations, shipping companies and most importantly for people!”

A future of fast, fossil-free ferries

GCF Marketing and Sales Manager Magnus Sörenson adds that “Interest in sustainable waterborne transport and demand for emission-free vessels is increasing exponentially. Analysts claim that the global market for emission-free vessels is expected to increase from USD 5.2 billion in 2019 to USD 15.6 billion by 2030, and passenger ferries are a large part of this.”

The proof of that interest is evident all around the world:

• Electric commuter ferries and riverboats are helping Bangkok control its dangerous smogs levels
• an all-electric high performance ferry is undergoing sea trials in New Zealand for launch in September
• India’s solar-powered commuter ferry Aditya has carried 1.35M passengers in the past 4 years
• the council of Trøndelag County in Norway sponsored a competition for high speed zero emission ferry concepts
• a consortium in Ireland led by Artemis Technologies has received a government innovation grant of £33 million (€36M, $US40M) to develop high speed ferries…

Alaskan Aluminum Power Catamarans specializes in the design and building of aluminum, hydrofoil assist, outboard powered catamarans; producing a welded aluminum boat specifically designed for operating in our rugged Alaskan environment. Each of our boats is influenced by a lifetime Alaskan resident who has spent most of his life both commercially fishing and sport fish guiding around Kodiak. They are designed by an accomplished naval architect specializing in hydrofoil assist catamarans, and each boat is built here in Alaska by a team well versed in fabricating within Alaska’s Commercial Fishing and Sport Boating industry.

The catamaran-style hull is well known for its stability, extra width, and fuel efficiency. However, the asymmetrical hulls on our boats recognize that the water inside a catamaran’s tunnel is different from the water displaced on the outboard sides of the boat when underway. This design helps to further improve on the catamaran idea; preparing for and mitigating chop entering the tunnel for a smoother ride at speed, as well as minimizing drag, increasing fuel efficiency, and range.

Our hydrofoil further improves that catamaran concept and acts like an airplane wing securely fixed between the hulls, providing several inches of lift to the entire boat on plane. Lifting the boat reduces the wetted surface, thereby reducing drag, increasing fuel efficiency, speed, and range. Lifting the boat also increases the distance between the water’s surface and tunnel, further softening and improving the ride in chop. Our hydrofoils are designed and placed to maximize lift at practical cruising speeds and anticipate a variety of load conditions.

2017 Lagoon 630 – Balance – Miami, Florida

2013 Horizon PC60 – Indigo – Tortola, BVI

“Being a catamaran, the PC60 has a wide beam (nearly 25 feet), and the builder takes advantage of every inch of volume. You can invite 20 friends for a party aboard, and there’s elbowroom to spare, even if you only use the main deck. There’s seating for everyone too. The PC60’s twin-hull design also means exceptional stability, which allows you to have loose chairs, even on the flybridge, without worrying. There’s no need for stabilizer fins or gyros; the hull form gives a solid ride, and it’s comfortable in a seaway,” Yachting previously reported.  

With a 24-foot, 6-inch beam and volume that rivals that of a 100-foot monohull motoryacht, Horizon Power Catamarans’ PC60 gives owners home-size living and entertainment spaces in a 60-foot platform. Indigo is a 2013 PC60 that was built by and is currently listed with The Powercat Co, a subsidiary of Horizon Power Catamarans, for $1.965 million. The power cat has a Bahamas-friendly sub-5-foot draft, three well-appointed staterooms and a 1,500-nautical-mile range.

2023 Aquila 54PC – Water Born – Pompano Beach, Florida

Looking for a power catamaran made for extended cruising and entertaining in stylish comfort? Water Born, a 2023 Aquila 54PC, could check off the boxes. The asking price is $2.795 million.

“The 54′s interior has square footage that’s roughly the same amount of space as a 68- to 70-foot monohull. It’s also a smartly designed space: The cockpit has a table for alfresco dining, as well as three stools at a bar that connects to the galley inside via an opening window and door. Thanks to the boat’s 25-foot beam, the main deck effectively turns into one vast social area. Add the salon’s seating, 360-degree banks of windows and 6-foot-9-inch headroom, and the area feels more like a waterfront condo than a boat,” Yachting previously reported .

HMY Yacht Sales stated, “This Aquila 54′ has just under 50 hours on her optional 550 Cummins motors. You won’t find another like her because she is the only Aquila 54 in North America with this engine option! Commissioned by an experienced owner operator, every option on this 54′ Aquila was carefully chosen to maximize the versatility of this already fantastic platform. Everything from the upgraded additional fuel tanks to the spare propellers and shafts and electric glendinning, the owner has spared no expense.”

2023 Leopard 53 PC – Princess Oxana – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Princess Oxana , a Leopard53 PC , is listed with Galati Yacht Sales at $1.8 million. The 2023 power catamaran has just 200 hours on its Yanmar diesels. The power cat also has a three-stateroom, three-head layout with accommodations to sleep six guests for extended cruising.

Designed for watersports fun, Princess Oxana has a hydraulic swim platform that doubles as the yacht’s tender stowage and lifts to deck height. Stepping into the 53-footer’s cockpit, there are two seating options with a bench seat with L-shaped backrest to starboard and an L-shaped sofa and fixed table to port. Adding a few loose chairs around the table creates alfresco dining six.

2021 Aquila 54 – Liquid – St. Petersburg, Florida

For cruisers looking for a power catamaran ready for voyaging adventures, there is Liquid, a 2021 Aquila 54. This power cat is capable of entertaining 30 guests and sleeping 10 (or more). Liquid has a reported top-end speed of 22 knots, a cruising speed of 15.5 knots and a range of almost 1,000 nautical miles at 7.8 knots. Liquid just came on the market and is asking just under $2.17 million.

2008 Leopard 47PC – Whensday – Stuart, Florida

Whensday , a 2008 Leopard 47 Powercat listed with HMY Yacht Sales for $465,000, is designed by naval architects Morrelli and Melvin and built by South African boatbuilders Robertson and Caine, a company known for its expertise in power-cat construction.

The Leopard 47 Powercat integrates an open-plan layout with exceptional interior volume, offering a comfortable cruising platform catamaran that combines spacious accommodations with admirable performance. Leopards are perennially popular vessels with private owners as well as charter enthusiasts.

Some of the yacht’s recent new-equipment upgrades include reconditioned Cummins diesels, an Onan generator, solar panels, a watermaker and new mechanical, electrical and navigation equipment. Run off the grid using solar power, watermaker and a 260-gallon freshwater tank, while cruising up to 900 nautical miles. Owners and guests will voyage those miles in substantial comfort too, thanks to the powercat’s four-stateroom layout, all with queen berths. There are also four heads.

Axcell Yachts 650 – Awol Shaka – West Palm Beach, Florida

AWOL SHAKA , an Axcell Yachts 650 power catamaran , is listed with Worth Avenue Yachts with a new asking price of $2.19 million, which represents about a $1 million reduction from the original asking price.

The 67-foot powercat’s hull was constructed in 2010, however, the yacht was only officially commissioned in 2020, and it underwent an extensive refit in 2022.

The refit included an interior update, outdoor furniture being reupholstered, decks resurfaced, a rebuilt head system, repainted engine and lazzarette bays, upgraded Garmin electronics, and updated tender garage–that accommodates 15-footer–and more.

• Amphfoil marries Air Props and Hydrofoils

A rendering of Shannon Boat Company’s Amphfoil 28′ (8.5m), a foil-borne commuter that uses a 400-hp (295-kw) hybrid-electric propulsion system with air propellers.

In the wake of the Miami International Boat Show in February, longtime builder of quality cruising sailboats Shannon Boat Company of Bristol, Rhode Island, announced the rollout of the Amphfoil Offshore Foil Boat, a foil-borne multihull available in a range of shapes and sizes, from 28 ‘  to 160 ‘  (8.5m to 18m). “Leveraging surface effect/ground effect lift, the vessel requires 75% less energy, resulting in unprecedented speed, range, and efficiency,” the press release claims. “The Amphfoil introduces tilting air propellers for dual-purpose propulsion and lift, complemented by custom-designed quad hydrofoils for enhanced maneuverability and comfort, thus combining catamaran stability, surface effect and hydrofoil lift, and electric tilting air propellers that are tasked with producing most of the lift and all propulsive power to create a totally new type of efficient offshore foil boat [that] eliminates the common sea travel nuisances like bouncing, fatigue, and seasickness.”

The press release touts speeds of 70 mph/60.8 kts/112.6 kmh and a range of 350 nm (648 km) for a boat powered by a hybrid-electric drivetrain. The company claims that this technology overcomes shortfalls of traditional hydrofoils, such as inadequate lift in waves and limited adaptability, and “represents a paradigm shift in maritime travel, seamlessly integrating hydrodynamic and aerodynamic technologies to redefine the hydrofoil experience.” The patented design supposedly “enhances maneuverability without complex electronics,” and protects marine life with retractable foils that prevent groundings in shallow water.

To learn more about the advances in the Amphfoil, we contacted Shannon president and cofounder Walt Schultz, a naval architect, engineer, boatbuilder, private pilot, and holder of several marine-related patents.

“Shannon Boat Company has been working on this project for almost 10 years, and now that the international patents have been awarded, we are ready to talk publicly about [it],” Schultz said. “Besides patents and COVID, we were delayed by the lack of suitable electric motors for the air propellers. We have been talking to e-Motion in Italy for a hybrid-electric system, and I think we are almost there with the propulsion package for the 28 ‘  [8.5m] Amphfoil prototype, which is an eight-passenger plus two-crew boat. There is no size limitation on our patents, but everything depends on the hybrid-electric propulsion systems. My hope is hydrogen-fuel-cell technology will be a game changer someday in the future for all marine craft.” In a later note, Schultz put that plan into perspective, calling “the electric-hybrid propulsion system…somewhat fluid. We still have a way to go to solidify our plans.” Therefore, he’ll build a 16 ‘  (5m) prototype for bollard testing and gathering dragline information, and data for energy requirements. He expects to exhibit that craft at the Fort Lauderdale boat show next fall.

Explaining the hydrofoils (which he calls “Seafoils”), he said they account for only 30% of total lift, with surface effect and the tilting air propellers of the propulsion system providing the rest. On the 28 ‘  model, two small, submerged propellers on [electric] 7.5-kW pods mounted on the rear foils will assist docking and in-port maneuvering.

Typical applications for these vessels, Schultz added, could be crew transfer boats for offshore wind farms; upscale ferries for places like the Hamptons and Nantucket; government agencies like the Coast Guard, DEA drug interdiction, and the U.S. Navy; and perhaps megayacht tenders and private vessels. Building these boats will require technicians who are conversant in carbon fiber (foils), and Kevlar (hulls and superstructures). “Shannon Boat Company will build the Amphfoil in the USA, and we are also talking to companies in Europe and Indonesia,” Schultz said. “All models are designed and engineered for ocean freight in standard-sized shipping containers and assembled at final delivery by low-skilled workers using hand tools.”

“We set out to envision the boat of the future, unbound by convention yet grounded in feasibility with cutting-edge technology for minimal environmental impact,” designer Fulvio De Simoni said in a statement.

Seawolf X is part of the Italian yard’s newly launched Blue series . Inspired by the way in which phytoplankton harnesses sunlight for energy, the hybrid-electric Blue cruisers use solar panels to capture clean energy and then stores it in advanced batteries to power the engines and hotel load.

Rossinavi says Seawolf X can cruise in full electric mode 100 percent of the time on one-day trips, 90 percent on multi-day jaunts, and 80 percent on transatlantic crossings. In addition, “Hibernation” mode reduces power consumption while the vessel is at anchor and any excess energy generated can be given to a quay or private property. In fact, Seawolf X supplies enough energy to charge up an entire villa, Rossinavi claims. The cat is also equipped with two diesel generators that can quickly recharge batteries. Alternatively, the batteries can be fully recharged with shore power in only five hours.

To top it off, Seawolf X is powered by an artificial intelligence system. Described as “a brain that can learn from observation and predict the needs of guests on board,” Rossinavi AI keeps the environmental impact of the yacht as low as possible by helping the crew to implement more eco-friendly operational changes and monitoring the battery pack to keep it in an ideal range of 20 to 80 percent.

“This yacht showcases remarkable technological innovations in both power management and propulsion technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in next-generation vessels,” adds Rossinavi COO Federico Rossi.

The US’s first hydrogen-fueled ship is officially ready to set sail

The  Sea Change , a hydrogen-powered catamaran ferry, just got Coast Guard clearance to operate commercially in the Bay Area.

Maritime vessel developer SWITCH Maritime received US Coast Guard approval on Friday to operate its flagship hydrogen ferry, the Sea Change, as a public ferry service.

 “We are immensely grateful for the support from the US Coast Guard and all our partners along the path to completion,” said Pace Ralli, CEO of SWITCH. “This is not the finish line, but just a starting point from which to build many more.”

The Sea Change is equipped with hydrogen fuel cells that power its all-electric motors. These cells allow the vessel to travel up to 300 nautical miles (345 miles) at speeds of up to 15 knots (17 mph) and don’t require shoreside charging infrastructure.

Built and launched at All American Marine shipyard in Bellingham, Washington, the  Sea Change  is a 75-passenger catamaran ferry featuring an integrated hydrogen power system from Zero Emission Industries that has 360 kW of fuel cells from Cummins and 600 kW of electric motor propulsion from BAE Systems.

Following a formal launch event in June, the Sea Change  will be operated in a six-month pilot service by the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA). It’s funded by a public-private sponsorship that includes the Golden State Warriors and a $3 million grant from the California Air Resources Board.

SWITCH Maritime will put the hydrogen ferry into a more permanent route when the pilot finishes. The company is also developing new designs for larger and faster ferries for San Francisco Bay and other major US and international ferry markets.
