RM Yachts is another quality shipyard in France that has doubled as the maker of many sailboats for other brands and created their own. They have focused on making their own for the last 20 years, with some custom accommodations along the way. They are known for their easy-to-handle boats that are not only comfortable but of high quality.

Back in 1989, they came up with their first design of the RM900. This was an epoxy-soaked plywood boat that had metal reinforcing the inside. Not too much has changed, other than having fiberglass sandwiched in between.

They continue to provide opportunities for sailors in La Rochelle that want to get on the water, as they produce roughly 50 yachts per year. RM Yachts can have either two keels or a lifting one, giving sailors customized options that best fit their needs.

Bali sailboats offer a little something for those that love catamarans. Not only are these some of the most beautiful catamarans on the market, they are also well built.

They have a partnership with Catana shipyard, located in France at Canet en Roussillon. This is one of the most famous shipyards out there, providing top-of-the-line yachts and catamarans.

France has a long history of boats due to its geographical location. Generations have developed models and tweaked designs to get it right.

Over time, it has grown into a large economic output with over 20 French sailboat brands or shipyards. These companies are responsible for employing over 20,000 people, so the economy of France depends on sailboats.

The oldest French sailboat brand is Beneteau, which dates back to 1884. At that time, Benjamin Beneteau started his boat building company with a focus to make sailboats and powerboats for French fishing fleets.

Throughout the years, demand for sailboats, racers, and cruisers all popped up with different French brands meeting those demands. Today, the marine industry is quite busy along the French coast.

Chantiers de l'Atlantique is one of the largest and most popular shipyards in the world. It is located in Saint-Nazaire, France, and they handle just about every boat you can think of.

What is it Like to Sail in France?

France is a unique location in the world that has a rich history. Sailing happens to be intertwined within that history, so naturally, you will see sailing as a common occurrence.

There is over 2,000 miles of coast to explore, meaning you have more than enough room to check things out. This alone makes it an interesting travel destination on the boat.

Sailing Options

France has four different bodies of water surrounding the country. These are the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, English Channel, and the Mediterranean Sea.

Since there are many locations to sail, you can have fun no matter where you are. Rivers and canals are perfect for smaller sailboats. The Atlantic side offers many opportunities for larger boats.

Depending on which one you choose can help you save time and money on select membership perks. Some will let you dock for free or offer other incentives if you a member.

Perfect Weather

The climate in France is nowhere near as consistent as sailing in Florida year-round, but it is another factor that allows sailors to enjoy their time on the water. France typically has cool winters and mild to moderate summers.

While the temperatures do show up around freezing, the summers are not that hot. If you can handle the temperature ranges then sailing in France will be a breeze.

What is the Market Like for French Sailboat Brands?

Since sailboats are a symbol of luxury in France, many are proud to own one that can afford it. The sailboats you will likely see are typically all made in Poland or France.

Depending on the brand and size, the prices can range between $14,000 all the way to $16 million, if not more. For mega yachts, these are well above $40 million.

The average selling price for French boats comes in around $240,000 according to Yacht World for used and new French sailboats. The most common brands that were researched were Beneteau, Jeanneau, and Sunseeker.

It is important to know how much a particular sailboat is worth before committing to buying it. Check the brand you have in mind and find out all price points based on age, condition, and location so that you can determine the best deal possible.

Why are French Sailboat Brands Popular?

The French had a passion to follow their dreams and design something that they loved. While this sounds like a familiar story for most successful brands, it is a little bit different in France.

Depending on where you are currently at, buying a French sailboat is going to be tricky. If you are in the United States, you will either need to find a dealer that can ship one to you there or buy a used one already in a marina.

Olympic flame reaches France for 2024 Paris Olympics aboard a 19th century sailing ship

Paris  — Crowds started gathering early Wednesday morning around Marseille's Old Port as a 19th century sailing ship carrying the Olympic flame appeared on the horizon. More than 1,000 boats accompanied the Belem, a three-mast schooner, as it approached the harbor of France's second-largest city in a slow maritime parade on calm seas under a clear blue sky.

The flame was brought ashore Wednesday evening by four-time French Olympic medalist, swimmer Florent Manaudou. He passed the torch to Paralympian Nantenin Keita, who then gave it to French rap star Jul, who is from Marseille. He took it and lit the Olympic cauldron at the Old Port in front of an expected crowd of 150,000 people.

City officials said a billion more people were expected to watch the event live on television around the world — a first spectacle for fans less than three months before the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics kick off on July 26.

Several sports stars were expected to take part in the parade, including former NBA star Tony Parker and Ivory Coast soccer great Didier Drogba, as well as charity and entertainment figures. French President Emmanuel Macron was among those in Marseille to watch the arrival. Fireworks and a free open-air concert were set to continue into the night.

The flame was transported from Greece aboard the Belem. During the 12-day voyage, the flame was very much a part of everyday life on the historic vessel. The crew even brought it to the table during meals and guarded it carefully as rough weather whipped up wild waves.

The festivities continue in Marseille on Thursday, when the flame will begin a 68-day, 7,500-mile journey through France, taking in both the mainland and France's overseas territories. Some 11,000 torchbearers will carry it through 65 French territories, stopping at more than 450 towns and cities along the way, as well as many iconic and historic sites.

From Marseille, it will be taken across southern France, including a crossing to the island of Corsica, before heading to southwest France, up the west coast to Normandy and then on to Brittany. From there, the flame will take to the seas again to visit Guadeloupe and Martinique. Another torch will be presented in the far-flung territories of French Guiana, Réunion and French Polynesia.

On the mainland, the Olympic flame will visit Lascaux in the southwest, where ancient paintings cover cave walls; the medieval fortress of Carcassonne; Versailles Palace; Mont Saint-Michel; and the castles of the Loire Valley. It will travel through vineyards and visit some of the Olympic sites.

Throughout the journey, the Olympic torch relay, which kicked off in Greece last month , will highlight some of the major figures who inspired and contributed to French culture, from Joan of Arc to Charles de Gaulle and singer Edith Piaf.

The relay will end in Paris on July 26 for the opening ceremony on the River Seine — the first-ever Olympic curtain-raiser held outside of a stadium.

"It's something we've been waiting for a very long time," chief organizer Tony Estanguet said Monday, referring to the 100 years since Paris last staged the Summer Games. "The Games are coming home."

France, which also hosted the 1900 Games, sees itself at the heart of the modern Olympic movement. It was a French aristocrat, Pierre de Coubertin, who revived the idea of the Games practiced by the Greeks until the 4th century B.C.

Wednesday's highly choreographed ceremony is a first test for the French organizing committee, which has been hit by criticism over the cost of tickets and disruption to venue towns, especially Paris, where transport and other public works have blighted the landscape for the past two years.

Security is also a concern, and the Marseille event provided a first test for that, too. France is on its highest terror alert following revelations that the same ISIS affiliate suspected of attacking a Moscow concert hall in March had plans to also attack France.

Around 6,000 law enforcement personnel were on duty in Marseille for the arrival of the flame.

"It's completely unprecedented for the national police to mobilize so many people on the same day at the same place," regional police coordinator Cedric Esson told reporters ahead of the event.

Around 200 members of France's security forces will accompany the flame throughout the relay. They will include an antiterrorism SWAT team and antidrone operatives.

The designers of the 2024 Olympic torch say it's all about symbolism. It's made of lightweight steel for purity, and it narrows at the top and bottom in a symmetry meant to reflect equality and parity.

The same torch will be used for the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the first time — reflecting efforts to build bridges between the two.

Barge hits a bridge in Texas, damaging the structure and causing an oil spill

Officials say a barge has hit a bridge in Galveston, Texas, spilling oil into surrounding waters and closing the only road connecting the city to Pelican Island

GALVESTON, Texas -- A barge slammed into a bridge pillar in Galveston, Texas, on Wednesday, spilling oil into waters near busy shipping channels and closing the only road to a small neighboring island. No injuries were reported.

The impact sent pieces of the bridge, which connects Galveston to Pelican Island, tumbling on top of the barge and shut down a stretch of waterway so crews could clean up the spill. The accident knocked one man off the vessel and into the water, but he was quickly recovered and was not injured, said Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Ray Nolen.

Ports along the Texas coast are hubs of international trade, but experts said the collision was unlikely to result in serious economic disruptions since it occurred in a lesser-used waterway. The island is on the opposite side of Galveston Island’s beaches that draw millions of tourists each year.

The accident happened shortly before 10 a.m. after a tugboat operator pushing two barges lost control of them, said David Flores, a bridge superintendent with the Galveston County Navigation District.

“The current was very bad, and the tide was high," Flores said. “He lost it.”

Pelican Island is only a few miles wide and is home to Texas A & M University at Galveston, a large shipyard and industrial facilities. Fewer than 200 people were on the campus when the collision happened, and all were eventually allowed to drive on the bridge to leave. The marine and maritime research institute said it plans to remain closed until at least Friday. Students who live on campus were allowed to remain there, but university officials warned those who live on campus and leave “should be prepared to remain off campus for an unknown period of time.”

The accident came weeks after a cargo ship crashed into a support column of the Francis Key Bridge in Baltimore on March 26, killing six construction workers.

The tugboat in Texas was pushing bunker barges, which are fuel barges for ships, Flores said. The barge, which is owned by Martin Petroleum, has a 30,000-gallon capacity, but it's not clear how much leaked into the bay, said Galveston County spokesperson Spencer Lewis. He said about 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers) of the waterway were shut down because of the spill.

The affected area is miles away from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which sees frequent barge traffic, and the Houston Ship Channel, a large shipping channel for ocean-going vessels. Aside from the environmental impact of the spill, the region is unlikely to see large economic disruption as a result of the accident, said Marcia Burns, a maritime transportation expert at the University of Houston

“Because Pelican Island is a smaller location, which is not in the heart of commercial events, then the impact is not as devastating," Burns said. “It’s a relatively smaller impact.”

At the bridge, a large piece of broken concrete and debris from the railroad hung over the side and on top of the barge that rammed into the passageway. Flores said the rail line only serves as protection for the structure and has never been used.

Opened in 1960, the Pelican Island Causeway Bridge was rated as “Poor” according to the Federal Highway Administration’s 2023 National Bridge Inventory released last June.

The overall rating of a bridge is based on whether the condition of any of its individual components — the deck, superstructure, substructure or culvert, if present — is rated poor or below.

In the case of the Pelican Island Causeway Bridge, inspectors rated the deck in “Satisfactory Condition,” the substructure in “Fair Condition” and the superstructure — or the component that absorbs the live traffic load — in “Poor Condition.”

The Texas Department of Transportation had been scheduled in the summer of 2025 to begin construction on a project to replace the bridge with a new one. The project was estimated to cost $194 million. In documents provided during a virtual public meeting last year, the department said the bridge has “reached the end of its design lifespan, and needs to be replaced.” The agency said it has spent over $12 million performing maintenance and repairs on the bridge in the past decade.

The bridge has one main steel span that measures 164 feet (50 meters), and federal data shows it was last inspected in December 2021. It’s unclear from the data if a state inspection took place after the Federal Highway Administration compiled the data.

The bridge had an average daily traffic figure of about 9,100 cars and trucks, according to a 2011 estimate.

Migrant people smugglers change tactics as crossings surge by 40 PER CENT in 'dangerous' new phase of crisis

T he number of Channel migrants has shot up by 40 per cent this year, as GB News can reveal an apparent switch in people smuggling tactics.

Sources say criminal gangs are now pushing out fewer boats but more often in a bid to avoid French beach patrols.

It has resulted in almost a fortnight of continued low level migrant activity, when boats were launched from the French coast every day over the past 12 days.

The biggest single day of arrivals was on May 4, when five small boats brought 244 people to UK waters.

Most other days saw just two or three boats make it across to the UK.

On May 8, a single boat arrived with 36 migrants on board.

Although the numbers arriving are far smaller than the busy days Border Force encounter in calmer seas, people smugglers are now launching boats in weather conditions that would normally be seen as unsuitable by them.

One maritime source told GB News: "This apparent switch in tactics marks a dangerous new phase in cross-Channel people smuggling.

"What we've mainly seen until now is most people smuggling gangs waiting until calm conditions and then conducting mass launches of up to a dozen small boats.

"This has overwhelmed French patrols and ensured the majority of small boats make it into the water."

However, the source said that any move towards pushing boats out in poor weather was "clearly very dangerous".

This year so far, 14 migrants have died in several different incidents in the Channel.

The smaller number of launches, which are taking place more frequently is still pushing up Channel migrant totals significantly.

Small boat launches every day since May 4, have resulted in a total of 1,272 people arriving in UK waters on 25 small boats.

That takes the number of Channel migrants who have crossed illegally to the UK so far this year to 9,550.

That figure is now a staggering 40 per cent higher than the 6,844 who arrived at the same point last year.

That number outstrips the 36 per cent reduction in small boat migrant numbers achieved across 2023.

The maritime source said the apparent shift in people smuggling tactics was "likely an effort to ensure more boats make it across, by targeting days when authorities are not expecting launches."

A Home Office spokesperson said: “The unacceptable number of people who continue to cross the Channel demonstrates exactly why we must get flights to Rwanda off the ground as soon as possible.

“We continue to work closely with French police who are facing increasing violence and disruption on their beaches as they work tirelessly to prevent these dangerous, illegal and unnecessary journeys.

"Last year they stopped 26,000 people from reaching our shores.

“We remain committed to building on the successes that saw arrivals drop by more than a third last year, including tougher legislation and agreements with international partners, in order to save lives and stop the boats.”

Graffiti-covered door from French revolutionary wars found in Kent

Markings include public executions and a sailing ship chiselled into door in 1790s by bored English soldiers

A scratched wooden door found by chance at the top of a medieval turret has been revealed to be an “astonishing” graffiti-covered relic from the French revolutionary wars, including a carving that could be a fantasy of Napoleon Bonaparte being hanged.

Over 50 individual graffiti carvings were chiselled into the door in the 1790s by bored English soldiers stationed at Dover Castle in Kent, when Britain was at war with France in the wake of the French Revolution.

They include a detailed carving of a sailing ship, an elaborate stylised cross and nine individual scenes of figures being hanged – one of whom is wearing a bicorn hat.

The simple plank door was first discovered several years ago at the top of St John’s tower , which for more than a century had been impossible to access without climbing a ladder to the base of a spiral staircase. At the time, however, it was covered in thick layers of paint that obscured many of its markings.

It was only when it was recently removed for conservation, requiring the paint to be carefully taken off, that the full details of the door’s carvings came to light.

“We had had glimpses of what might be on it, but when it was stripped back, the totality of it was quite amazing,” said Paul Pattison, senior properties historian at English Heritage, which manages the castle .

Describing the door as a “very significant” find, he said Dover at the time would have been “a hive of activity, with ships filling the harbour and coloured military uniforms a constant presence in the castle and town.

“What makes this door such an extraordinary object is that it is a rare and precious example of the ordinary person making their mark; whether that be simply for the purpose of killing time, or wanting to be remembered.”

The medieval room, at the top of one of the most exposed defences of the castle, had been repurposed during the 18th-century conflict as a watchtower.

Members of the militias stationed at the castle would have been posted there for hours on end, and turned to artistic efforts to pass the time.

The nine hangings are clearly by different hands, said Pattison, pointing to a preoccupation of the soldiers with public executions, which would have been common at the time. The detail of one, which shows the figure wearing a bicorn hat, has led to intriguing speculation that it could depict a fantasy of a defeated Napoleon being hanged. (In fact the emperor would die in exile in 1821, reportedly of stomach cancer.)

“It’s obviously a man in uniform – so this is a military man,” said Pattison, adding that only officers wore the distinctive hat.

While Pattison remains to be convinced beyond doubt that it is intended to be the French military leader, “it almost certainly depicts a particular individual being hung – and they obviously were an officer, which is quite unusual”.

Also depicted is a detailed, accurate carving of a single-masted sailing ship, most likely an eight-gun cutter used by the Royal Navy as well as by smugglers and privateers. Another symbol depicts a chalice and ornate cross, possibly to represent Christian holy communion.

The St John tower’s door will go on display at Dover Castle in July as part of Dover Under Siege , an exhibition about medieval and Georgian conflicts at the castle.

CANNES – Before Judith Godrèche kickstarted a #MeToo wave in the French industry , she was one of the first prominent actors to go on the record against Harvey Weinstein.

Godrèche was 24 and attending the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of her film “Ridicule.” Weinstein, who had just acquired the film, invited her to his Hotel du Cap suite to discuss a possible Oscar campaign. Weinstein, she recounted to The New York Times in 2017, forced himself on her and she fled.

That was 1996. Now, Godrèche is in Cannes at another pivotal juncture in the #MeToo movement. On Wednesday, months after she alleged two prominent filmmakers sexually abused her when she was a teen, Godrèche premiered her poignant short, “Moi Aussi” ("Me Too").

“It’s extremely meaningful for me to be there because that’s where Harvey tried to rape me,” Godrèche said in an interview. “But honestly, there are so many places in the world and so many movie sets and locations and moments in my actress life that were not OK. If I was to see the world only through this perspective anytime I’m going through something related to filmmaking, I think I’d just run away and stop.”

Instead, Godrèche has emerged as the leading figure in France’s #MeToo movement. In February, Godrèche filed official complaints against director Benoît Jacquot for “rape with constraint,” and against filmmaker Jacques Doillon for “rape with violence” during the making of 1989's “The 15 Year Old Girl.” Both men have denied the allegations.

In France, which had been resistant to the #MeToo movement, the allegations sent new shockwaves through the industry. French Culture Minister Rachida Dati criticized the country’s cinema for “collectively turning a blind eye for decades” to sexual violence. At the César Awards , France’s equivalent of the Oscars, Godrèche asked the audience: “Is it possible that we can look the truth in the eye?”

In the aftermath of Godrèche's strong statements, more women have come forward, and Cannes organizers are girding for more revelations during the festival.

“It’s a wonderful thing that women are now speaking out,” actor Léa Seydoux told reporters in Cannes on Wednesday. “Things are clearly changing and it was high time it did.”

Godrèche has found herself hailed as a hero by many and criticized as a “puritan” by others.

“For me, it’s quite a bizarre time,” Godrèche says. “There’s so much hate and weird fantasies projected at me. People are looking at me like I'm a radioactive thing.”

After Godrèche came forward with her allegations against Jacquot and Doillon, she created an email address as a repository for anyone who had experienced sexual abuse. Within 15 days, she received some 5,000 testimonies. On March 23, about a thousand of those who wrote assembled on a boulevard in Paris.

Godrèche, 52, turned that gathering into “Moi Aussi,” dedicated to “all those who one day finally have been able to tell their story” and “all those who still live in silence.” It was to premiere Wednesday evening in the opening ceremony of Cannes' Un Certain Regard sidebar .

Godrèche walked the festival's red carpet earlier in the day with the film's collaborators, ahead of the premiere of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” Together, they stood on the steps of the Palais des Festivals with hands covering their mouths.

Cannes has seen several dramatic demonstrations for women in film in recent years. In a 2018 Time’s Up event, 82 women — including Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart — stood on the Palais steps in protest. The following year, Thierry Frémaux, Cannes artistic director, signed a gender parity pledge at a rally.

But such moments have been outliers in France. In 2018, Catherine Deneuve was a signatory on open letter published in Le Monde that argued the #MeToo movement had gone too far. In 2020, when Roman Polanski won best director at the Césars, actor Adèle Haenel — who that year said she had been sexually harassed by the French director Christophe Ruggia between the ages 12 to 15 — walked out of the ceremony. Ruggia has denied the allegation. Last year, Haenel said she was quitting the French film industry altogether over its “complacency toward sexual aggressors.”

Polanski, who was charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in 1977 and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, is still wanted in the United States decades after he fled before his sentencing.

“We have a way of idealizing and protecting auteurs and putting them on such a pedestal that they become untouchable,” says Godrèche of French attitudes about cinema. “Defining a filmmaker as an author makes it possible for him to identify as a genius, and be above laws and norms.”

The French film industry has also been shaken by multiple sexual misconduct accusations against the internationally known Gérard Depardieu. The 75-year-old actor is to stand trial in October over the alleged sexual assaults in 2021 of two women on the set of a film. Depardieu has denied it.

Asked what needs to change, Godrèche struggles to define the scope of a problem she believes is stitched into the fabric of French filmmaking.

“In France, so much needs to happen," she says. “I’m not the first one and I hope I’m not the last one.”

While making “Moi Aussi,” Godrèche hoped to alter some of the dynamics she’s accustomed to on film sets.

“I didn’t want to be the person in the hierarchy of cinema,” she says. “It’s kind of like Cannes. When you’re on set, it’s extremely clear what the hierarchy is. It’s sort of aristocracy.”

“Moi Aussi” is a kind of choral expression of the multi-stage process of going public with an experience of sexual abuse. And in many ways, it charts Godrèche’s own experience.

“I’ve been trying to understand what happened to me. It’s a strange journey. I do believe that I’ve been in many ways for my entire life as an actress a muse. I’ve been reduced to silence in so many ways,” she says. “I never allowed myself to completely embrace that I was allowed to create my world, to write my own movies.”

Asked if she’s glad she came forward, Godrèche sighs, “Oh, so glad.”

“It doesn’t mean I’m relieved. It doesn’t mean I’m happy or not completely terrified some days and extremely overwhelmed by the power of the backlash,” Godrèche adds. “But I’m absolutely happy I did because I do believe there are millions of people who are wishing that their own child or the young woman that they were can find some sort of justice.”

A fire at a marina in Croatia destroys 22 boats, causes huge damage but no injuries

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — A fire early at a marina in northwestern Croatia early Wednesday destroyed 22 boats and caused huge damage but no injuries.

An investigation was underway to determine what caused the fire at the marina in Medulin, a small town on the Istrian peninsula that’s popular with tourists in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea.

Photos showed boats in the marina burning in a raging blaze. Local media said some owners jumped into the sea to escape as firefighters rushed to separate the boats still untouched by the fire.

The fire was brought under control. Authorities said they put up barriers in the sea in stop any environmental damage.

Croatia is a top European tourism destination and a favorite spot for sailing.
